Concert to showcase Young Artist Competition winner May 19 For 11 years, the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra has offered local young artists the chance to share their stage. This year, an awardwinning high school cellist is the Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition winner. Bakersfield resident Anna McCoy is expected to bring melodic depth and agility to SaintSaëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor. Consistently ranked by judges in the California Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Festival as “superior,” McCoy will be the centerpiece of the Sunday, May 19 concert at 4 p.m. inside Country Oaks Baptist Church, 20915 Schout Road. A high school senior, Anna has been homeschooled her entire life. She has participated in many ensembles, but is currently a member of the Calvary Bible Church orchestra and the Bakersfield Youth Symphony. “I consider music one of God's most glorious creations,” McCoy said. “And I marvel that God has enabled me to serve and honor Him through it.” "[Anna is] a really good cellist," concertmaster Gayel Pitchford

Directed by David Newby, the orchestra will also play Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major and partner with the Tehachapi Sym-
phonic Chorus and director Kathy Kelly. Together, the chorus and orchestra will perform Verdi’s “Va, Pensiero,” and “Libiamo,” as well as Wagner’s “Pilgrims’ Chorus.” “The year 2013 commemorates the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s death and Wagner’s birth,” Kelly said. “In their honor, the Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus will combine with the Antelope Valley Master Chorale and Concert Choir to perform three opera choruses. After the intermission will be a drawing for the yearly fundraiser. Tickets may be purchased from any Tehachapi Symphony member, board member or Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus member. The grand prize is $1,000. A reception will follow the concert to allow community members to meet the Young Artist competition winner, as well as symphony and chorus directors and members. Singing cowgirl Juni Fisher will ride into town for her third performance at Fiddlers Crossing, Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. Fisher grew up horse crazy on a San Joaquin Valley citrus farm, achieving 4-H and FFA honors, listening to the music of Marty Robbins, Joan Baez and Burl Ives and learning Western songs from her father. She started playing guitar at age seven and wrote her first song at age eight. Five albums and many awards later -including the 2007 Western Music Association Song of the Year, 2006 WMA Female Vocalist of the Year, 2005 Academy of Western Artists Western Female Vocalist of the Year, and 2005 WMA Crescendo Award – Juni Fisher is one of the most popular singing cowgirls on the Cowboy Poetry and Folk Festival circuits.
As of this writing, the concert is well on its way to being sold out, with only a few of the $20 tickets still available at Mountain Music. THS play ‘The Beatles Slept Here’ a weekend attraction TEHACHAPI NEWS
Tehachapi High School Intermediate Drama class students continue their presentation of the mystery-comedy “The Beatles Slept Here” Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 11 at 2 and 7 p.m. Twelfth grade student director Nick Tanaka said he and the students have great fun working on the play. He also spoke highly of his male lead, Sgt. Paprika, played by 11thgrader Alexzander Chappell, describing him as “able to [portray] a large range of emotions.” The play follows Sgt. Paprika, the owner of the Penny Lane Hotel, who despises the Beatles and tries to keep
anyone from knowing that the Fab Four slept there. However, some pesky teenagers leak his secret and the next thing he knows, a fan club descends upon the hotel. When precious memorabilia are stolen, Johnny B. Goode arrives at the hotel to deduce who has made off with the valuables. Tickets cost $5 for general admission and $3 with an ASB card. All proceeds go to assist drama students with producing future performances. “The students have worked very hard on the play,” THS Theater Arts Instructor Lara Crowe said. “They are eager to demonstrate all they

Husband thrashes about during sleep BY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D. CONTRIBUTING WRITER
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 73-year-old husband has, in the past year, been jerking during his sleep. His movements are quite wild at times. He has fallen out of bed three times during his "fighting" dreams. He dreams he is in a fight at work, playing football or shooting things. Just last night, it was killing mice. He jerks with his arms and legs. I don't attempt to wake him, as one time he was on the verge of striking me. I did yell his name three times, and he finally woke up. He has had two sleep tests and was told he has "half sleep apnea." What does that mean? He takes no sleeping aids. I have never heard that such movements are a sign of sleep apnea. -- D.S. ANSWER: A good bet is that your husband has a condition called periodic limb movements of sleep. For many, such movements are bending of the big toe and ankle. For others, it's jerking of the legs and arms. Most often the person doesn't waken and has no recollection of what went on during the night. The bed partner and the condition of the blankets give testimony to what occurred during

sleep. If the person doesn't have daytime fatigue, then this disorder isn't considered a sleep problem for him or her. It is for the one who shares the bed. Sometimes periodic limb movements of sleep occur with another problem, restless leg syndrome. That's a creepycrawly sensation in the legs that comes on in the evening when sitting or in bed. The person is compelled to get up and move around to quell the feeling. A warm bath before going to bed might calm your husband's movements. Decreasing the amount of caffeine he drinks and doing the same for all forms of tobacco could bring nocturnal peace for you and him. If the situation doesn't clear, then Mirapex or Requip, two Parkinson's disease medicines, can put an end to the nighttime martial arts. Do tell his doctor about this. Periodic limb movements of sleep are, at times, associated with iron deficiency. I have no idea what "half sleep apnea" means. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Every now and then, my
eyelid twitches. I don't think it's due to me being tired, because it can happen when I am wide awake in the morning. And I don't think it's due to stress -- I love my work. Furthermore, I don't drink any caffeinated beverages. What do you think is the significance of this? -- H.R. ANSWER: Nearly everyone has had a twitchy eyelid at some time in life. It's not a sign of illness. It's not something that lasts for any length of time. Fatigue, stress and caffeinated beverages all have been implicated as causes. But most people with a twitchy lid are like you; they have and do none of these things. A washcloth soaked in warm water and placed on the involved, closed lid for a few minutes generally can stop the twitching. Or gentle massage of the involved, closed lid also can end it. If it continues and lasts for longer periods, then a doctor has to be consulted. DR. Integratron provides visitors a good vibe BY MATTHEW MARTZ TEHACHAPI NEWS
It’s not much too look at from the outside, but inside it is something out of this world. Constructed by NASA physicist George Van Tassel, who said aliens supplied him with instructions to build it, Integratron is the only all-wood, acoustically perfect sound chamber in the United States. Rising 38-feet from a powerful vortex in the middle of the Mojave Desert just outside the town of Joshua Tree and resembling a small observatory, the one-of-a-kind building is a blended design of Moses' Tabernacle and the science of Nikola Tesla. Fifty-five feet in diameter, the dome took 18 years to construct, and according to its creator sits atop an intersection of influential geomagnetic force that, when focused by the unique geometry of the building, concentrates and amplifies the energy required for the rejuvenation and healing of living cell tissues. Today, Intergratron still lives up to its architect’s claim, offering visitors the experience for physical and spiritual healing. For around $80, a person can take a sound bath — a 60-

years, ran a small restaurant and airport and held UFO conventions for two decades to raise money for his Integratron project. In 1959, nearly 11,000 people attended one of his spacecraft conventions and Van Tassel continued to work on the Integratron while writing a number of books on time travel and rejuvenation. The Giant Rock area, including a spot called Crystal Hill and Van Tassel's airstrip are about 10 minutes by car from the dome. However, because all roads are

Are remote-controlled aircraft allowed in California Reserves? Q&As from the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife BY CARRIE WILSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Question: I am a conservation advocate and an avid wildlife photographer. Over the last several years, I have been photographing birds and landscape views of Southern California's wildlife areas. I am interested in expanding this documentation with video, and in particular aerial video taken from a remote-controlled electric helicopter. While I am very aware of the need to not disturb or harass local wildlife, I am wondering if there are regulations that restrict or prohibit the use of RC-aircraft in or around the perimeter of ecological reserves and conservation areas? (Bill K.) Answer: There is no general prohibition
against using radio-controlled “vehicles” in wildlife areas (California Code of Regulations Title 14, section 550). However, in ecological reserves, prohibitions against: 1) disturbing any bird, mammal, etc.; 2) operating vehicles; and 3) operating any type of aircraft or hovercraft without permission may apply (CCR Title 14, sections 630(a)(1) & (a)(4) and (a)(17)). There is also a provision that prohibits the use of any motorized, hot-air, or unpowered aircraft or other device capable of flight or any earth orbiting imaging device to locate or assist in locating big game mammals beginning 48 hours before and continuing 48 hours after any big game
hunting season in the same area (CCR Title 14, section 251(a)). In addition, a permit could be required if there are concerns your aircraft will “ … herd or drive… or disrupt animal’s normal behavior patterns, which includes, but is not limited to breeding, feeding or sheltering …” Under federal regulations, this may be illegal if you are using the video for any commercial purpose. Under current federal aviation rules, using unmanned aircraft — what commonly are referred to as drones — for commercial purposes is prohibited in the United States. Serving abalone at a fundraiser Question: My husband and I are residents of both Humboldt and Sutter counties. We occasionally dive for abalone in Humboldt where we live. If we don't consume them right away, we freeze them whole in the shell as the local game warden advised us years ago. I also work for a nonprofit hospice in Sutter County and they are having a fundraiser in May at a private house, where many of our staff will prepare appetizers for 100 guests. I want to prepare abalone appetizers from three abalone that we already have tagged and frozen from last season. The event is being professionally catered for the meal and dessert and so they are selling tickets, but no one is paying for or making money from the abalone I want to cook.
The abalone is such a minuscule part of the meal. I just want to make sure I am allowed to bring it to an event like this and I was not able to find anything specific about that in the regulations. Please advise. Thank you. (Amy M., RN) Answer: Sport-taken abalone may not be bought, sold, bartered or traded (Fish and Game Code, section 7121.) If sport-taken abalone are used for a non-profit fundraising dinner, then the cost of attending the dinner must be advertised as a requested donation to the organization putting on the dinner. In your situation, if you are just providing a few abalone for an appetizer, and as long as the dinner is not advertised to contain abalone in order to sell more tickets to the fund-raising dinner, then I think that would be ok.
However, you should contact your local game warden where you will be having the dinner to confirm they are in agreement.

Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 2 hours, 50 minutes Serves: 16 • 1 box (1 lb. 2.4 oz.) Betty Crocker® Original Supreme Premium brownie mix • Water, vegetable oil and egg called for on brownie mix box • 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened • 1/3 cup sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries • 1 cup fresh blueberries • 1 cup fresh raspberries • 1/2 cup apple jelly Preheat oven to 350F (325F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease bottom only of 12-inch pizza pan with cooking spray or shortening. Make brownie batter as directed. Spread in pan. Bake 26 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour. In small bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Carefully spread mixture evenly over brownie base. Arrange berries over cream cheese mixture. Stir jelly until smooth; brush over berries. Refrigerate about 1 hour or until chilled. Cut into wedges. Store covered in refrigerator.

resources and then become a financial burden on others. If you can check all those boxes, consider these options: • Avoid the gift tax. You can give cash or property worth up to $14,000 per year, per individual, before you'll trigger the federal gift tax. (Married couples filing jointly can give $28,000 per recipient.) You'll probably never have to pay a gift tax, however, since you're allowed to bestow up to $5.25 million in gifts during your lifetime above and beyond the annual $14,000 excluded amounts before the gift tax kicks in – which for most of us means never. Read IRS Publication 950 (at www.irs.gov) for details.

Now that the long-debated estate tax rules have finally been settled, let's get real: Despite all the hoopla raised, most people probably would never be impacted whether the lifetime estate tax threshold had stayed at $5.12 million or reverted to $1 million. In the end, it actually went up a bit to $5.25 million for 2013. Even if your estate will only be a fraction of that amount, it still pays to have a plan for distributing your assets. If your finances are in good shape, there's no reason not to start sharing the wealth while you're still around to enjoy helping others. It also doesn't hurt that you can reap significant tax advantages by distributing a portion of your assets now. Before you start doling out cash, however, make sure you are on track to fund your own retirement, have adequate health insurance, can pay off your mortgage and are otherwise debt-free. You wouldn't want to deplete your
• Pay for education. If college is still far off for your children, grandchildren or others, consider funding a 529 State Qualified Tuition Plan for them. Any interest the account earns is not subject to federal (and in most cases, state) income tax; plus, many states offer tax deductions for contributions made to their own 529 Plans. And don't worry: If one child decides not
to attend college, you can always transfer the account balance to another without penalty. • Roth IRAs for kids. If your minor children or grandchildren earn income (allowances and gifts don't count), you may fund a Roth IRA on their behalf. You can contribute up to $5,500 or the amount of their taxable earnings for the year, whichever is less. Your contributions are made on an after-tax basis but the earnings grow, tax-free, until the account is tapped at retirement. • Fund someone's benefits. Many people cannot afford health or other insurance and so forego coverage, putting themselves just one serious
illness or accident away from financial disaster. Many also can't fund their 401(k) plan or IRA. Consider applying your tax-exempt gifts to help loved ones pay for these critical benefits. You'll not help protect them from catastrophe, but also greatly increase their long-term financial self-sufficiency. • Charitable contributions. If you're planning to leave money or property to charities in your will, consider beginning to share those assets now, if you can afford to. You'll be able to enjoy watching your contributions at work – and be able to deduct them from your income taxes. Read IRS Publication 526 for details. Noteworthy An evening with Native American Kawaiisu elder Harold Williams Harold Williams will talk about the taboos associated with Kawaiisu rock art and will entertain with stories about the Kawaiisu on the evening of May 11, to be facilitated by Jon Hammond. The Tehachapi Heritage League is sponsoring an evening with Harold Williams for
those curious about life among the Native Americans in the Tehachapi area. Emma Williams, well-known basket weaver, was Harold’s great grandmother and is featured on the Nuwa or Kawaiisu mural, “People of the Mountains,” on the side of the Hitching Post

Theater. Harold Williams is also pictured in the mural. It will be a unique opportunity to hear what it was like to grow up in a traditional Indian family. Hear details of their everyday life. The event will be held at Pacino’s Restaurant on May 11. Doors open at
