Tehachapi Heritage League celebrates 40 years Forty years ago the newly-formed Tehachapi Heritage League was busy getting ready to open its first museum. This year the organization has a number of activities planned to help celebrate its 40th anniversary. The Tehachapi Museum opened on July 4, 1973, in a tiny building on Tehachapi Boulevard and moved to its present building — the former library building — on South Green Street in downtown Tehachapi in 1982. Across the street is the Errea House Museum, a restored home showing the rural lifestyle of Tehachapi, circa 1900 to 1930. Tehachapi Heritage League President Charles White said it has taken many people many years to create the opportunities for residents and visitors to have places to connect with local history. The current board recognizes that the work we've done was made possible by all the work in the past and we thank everyone who has helped build the organization and our museums over the years, he said. Both museums are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., and additionally on the first Friday of each month from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. as part of “First Friday Downtown” festivities. Additionally, special events at the
private residence near the museum for an evening of wine pairings with appetizers. It’s time once again for the Red House BBQ’s annual Beer Show. This year’s show will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 4 p.m. to “?� Guests at the 2012 event are pictured above. Tickets are available at Red House only. Patrons must be at least 21 years of age to attend.
Red House BBQ’s ‘Festival of Beer’ This Saturday, May 18, beer connoisseurs from near and far will once again have the opportunity to partake in Red House BBQ’s annual “Festival of Beer.� Reputed as a seriously discerning beer show, this event showcases beers produced and provided by members of the “Big Brew Theory,� a local home brew club. Featuring more than 15 different and custom beers, this show serves to share the talents of mainly local private brewmasters. According to Red House BBQ’s owner, Mano Lujan, “this event is
inviting to a different level of beer drinker,� ones who not only enjoy a palate pleasing beer, but who like to have serious discussions about the quality and characteristics of what they are consuming ...much like in the style of wine metaphor language.� Seating is limited to 150 persons maximum for this beer show. Tickets are available only at Red House BBQ, and are $40 for combination beer and food, and $20 for designated driver tickets (food only). Purchase of advance tickets is recommended. There will be
free beer glasses given to the first 100 patrons arriving. Doors open at 4 p.m. and this event will continue until “?,� Lujan said. (Must be 21 years or older to attend.) Whether it is Red House’s beer or the barbecue that serves to satiate, Lujan’s choice of cuisine for this occasion will again include meals and side dishes that will pair with the evening’s total fare. Art in Touch: A tactile experience The Arts Council of Kern has put together a traveling exhibition which will provide a high-quality art experience to you and to our blind and visually impaired community members. In addition, the Arts Council will provide resources for each hosting venue to develop programs in their own community during the exhibition that foster
arts-based blind/seeing discussions and experiences. The exhibition will travel for one year among the various communities of Kern County. Concert to showcase Young Artist Competition winner May 19 For 11 years, the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra has offered local young artists the chance to share their stage. This year, an award-winning high school cellist is the Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition winner. Bakersfield resident Anna McCoy is expected to bring melodic depth and agility to Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor. Consistently ranked by judges in the California Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Festival as “superior,” McCoy will be the centerpiece of the Sunday, May 19 concert at 4 p.m. inside Country Oaks Baptist Church, 20915 Schout Road. Directed by David Newby, the orchestra will also play Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major and partner with the Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus and director Kathy Kelly. Together, the chorus and orchestra will perform Verdi’s “Va, Pensiero,” and “Libiamo,” as well as Wagner’s “Pilgrims’ Chorus.” Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus will also combine with the Antelope Valley Master Chorale and Concert Choir to perform three opera choruses. After the intermission will be a drawing for the yearly fundraiser. Tickets may be purchased from any Tehachapi Symphony member, board member or Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus member. The grand prize is $1,000. A reception will follow the concert to allow community members to meet the Young Artist competition winner, as well as symphony and chorus directors and members. When skin patches lose all color BY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D. CONTRIBUTING WRITER
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have vitiligo, and it keeps spreading over my body. My father had it on his legs. I'm an older lady of brown complexion. This vitiligo is so embarrassing. I wear slacks every day, except to church. Do you know of any cover-ups for it? --C. ANSWER: Vitiligo is the loss of special skin cells called melanocytes, cells that produce the pigment melanin, which gives skin its color. The loss comes about because of an immune attack on those pigment cells. Genes are one of the ingredients that lead to vitiligo. Your father is an example of the genetic influence. The skin patches devoid of melanocytes and melanin become chalky white and are most noticeable on people with dark skin. The patches appear on the face, in circles around the mouth and eyes, on the neck, trunk, arms and legs. Stronger varieties of cortisone in creams, lotions and
gels often can coax melanocytes back into the depigmented skin. Many users have enjoyed success with skin applications of pimecrolimus (Elidel cream) or tacrolimus (Protopic ointment). Ultraviolet light, along with the oral psoralen drugs, is another way of repigmenting vitiliginous skin. Quite a few people with vitiligo find it more convenient to apply cosmetic agents to cover the white patches and make them blend with adjacent skin. Covermark (800524-1120), Dermablend (800662-8011) and Cover Fx (416-665-7444) are three popular products. I've included the phone numbers of the manufacturers in case you cannot find the products in your area. The National Vitiligo Foundation, Inc., will provide you with information on the many
ways that vitiligo is treated. The website is www.nvfi.org, and the phone number (not toll-free) is 513-541-3903. You'll find the foundation to be a friend that can help you cope with vitiligo. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Our friend, age 86, has Alzheimer's disease. She sees a neurologist every four months. Some days, she is lucid; other days, she's out in left field. She lives alone and drives a car. She recently got lost, but recovered and came home safely. Her children live out of town. We, her friends, think the time has come for our friend to give up independent living. What criteria are used to make this decision? -- C.F. ANSWER: Your friend's lapses fill the criteria that indicate a need for assisted living. Although 50 percent of people with a degree of dementia make this decision for themselves, that leaves 50 percent who do not. Giving up one's home and one's car has unpleasant ramifications for
that half who want to continue living independently. Close relatives can convince these people that they need help. A doctor can step in and strongly advise such moves. Just over 100 miles from downtown Tehachapi is a 150acre gem that highlights the beauty of nature through an internationally renowned botanical collection and a variety of seasonal horticultural displays. Once owned by newspaper magnate E. Manchester Boddy, Descanso Gardens in the La Canada neighborhood of Los Angeles County stands as a symbol of one man’s love for botanical plants. Wanting to preserve the site, Boddy donated his gardens to the county in 1953 and since then it has been magnificently maintained for thousands of visitors to experience each year. But the gardens just aren’t for botanists; ornithologists (bird watchers) also enjoy the serene surroundings. And just past the five-acre rose garden with its collection of the All-America Rose Selections winners since 1940, is the bird observation station and lake, which provides a shelter and nesting area for a wide variety of birds, waterfowl and other animals.
Like a natural playground for winged and legged critters alike, each section of Descanso Gardens is unique, especially to southern California. Like the dryraked garden, modeled after a Shen garden in Kyoto. The Shen garden brings the spirit of the Fareast to the foothills of Los Angeles, providing spectacular fall foliage changes, which cloak the beautiful blue tile roofing of the full moon teahouse nestled in the midst of flowering branches and vines. There is also a Shinto bridge and a Japanese farmhouse that sit beside a meandering path, which leads directly to the Boddy house — a 12,000square-foot, 22-room mansion that served as the family’s residence during their time of ownership. Tucked into a hillside, today the house offers a rare glimpse of glamour from a bygone era and is open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Other areas of the gardens include, nature’s table, an eightacre garden planted with fruit trees and seasonal vegetables
along with herbs and edible flowers, the harvest garden, lilac garden and the oak forest. While self-guided walks are the way most visitors enjoy the gardens, guided tram tours are available for a small fee. Another way to get a unique perspective is via the Enchanted Railroad, a 1/8 replica of a diesel train that travels a section of the gardens near the promenade. The railroad operates from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets for the railroad and the tram can be purchased at the visitor center where there is also a gift shop and the Descanso Café. Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Dr., La Canada Flintridge and is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General is $8, $6 for seniors, $3 for children 5 to 12 years and under 5 are free. Parking is also free. Because the gardens are an outside experience, all schedules are subject to weather and availability. It is advised to call ahead before visiting, 818-949-4200.

I have heard this size was determined to help prevent children from putting these small reptiles into their mouths. How to legally exchange bear skulls and claws? Question: Are there any regulations prohibiting someone from giving me a bear skull or claws if legally taken either in Cali-

Answer: No. If the skull or claws were taken from a bear in California, and as long as no money or goods were exchanged for the acquisition, you may legally receive and possess these bear parts. Sabiki rig Question: I frequently fish at the Point Arena pier but am not clear on a specific rule. I know you may only have two hooks on one fishing line, but is it legal to use a Sabiki rig with multiple small hooks to catch bait
fish? (Steve Lum) Answer: When fishing from Point Arena pier, you can use a fishing rod with multiple hooks as long as you don't have rockfish, cabezon, greenling or lingcod in your possession. If you happen to catch one of these species while using more than two hooks on your line, you must release the fish. You are limited to no more than one line and two hooks when fishing for rockfish, cabezon, greenling and lingcod, or if these species are in possession. On a public pier, you can use up to two fishing appliances (rod and reel, hoop net, crab trap, etc.) with no restrictions on the number of hooks (unless you are targeting the species mentioned above or have them in your possession).
Why early stop shooting times for turkeys? Question: I have been turkey hunting in California for several years and always wondered why the
shooting times are limited until only 4 pm. I have heard it protects them so they can return to roost in the evening, but this makes no sense since there is an over-abundance of turkeys in California, more than a lot of other states. Many other states allow turkey hunting until sundown, similar to big game. What’s the reason for this early shooting stop time? (Dave Johannes, Modesto) Answer: Shooting hours for the spring wild turkey season is always one-half hour before sunrise to 4 p.m. The reason for the early stop time in the spring (versus the stop time of sunset in the fall) is because the spring season occurs during turkey breeding season. Only the toms (and bearded hens) may be taken in the spring to allow the hens to nest successfully. The goal is to maximize the opportunities for hunters to take turkeys while protecting nesting hens. Setting this
early shooting stop time gives the birds a break from hunting pressure, allows the toms to return to the roost and the hens to get back to their nests. Historically, the stop time was 1 p.m., but as wild turkey numbers have flourished, the stop hunting time was moved to 4 p.m. Turkeys typically roost communally and may have only one or no more than a few trees where they roost at night. They become more vulnerable toward the end of the day as they return to their preferred roost. If the turkeys are disturbed along the way by gun shots, they may select unfamiliar roosting areas, thus making themselves more vulnerable to predation. Cherry Bread Pudding Pairs with Mirassou Sunset Red Servings: 8 to 10 Prep time: 20 minutes Stand time: 2 to 8 hours Cook time: 30 to 35 minutes • 3 1/3 cups half and half • 1 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1teaspoon almond extract • 4 eggs • 8 cups (1-inch cubes) Challah or other sweet, eggy bread, lightly toasted • 1 can (15 ounces) pitted sweet cherries, well drained • 3 to 4 tablespoons coarse sugar Whisk together half and half, sugar, extracts and eggs until well mixed. Place in a 13 x 9-inch baking dish and add bread cubes. Stir lightly and push cubes down to coat completely with mixture; cover and refrigerate for 2 to 8 hours. Preheat oven to 325F and lightly butter 8 to 10 small (about 1 cup) ramekins. Fold cherries into bread mixture and spoon into ramekins; sprinkle with coarse sugar. Trim your wedding costs

Weddings have always been big business, but I was shocked to see how expensive they've become in the 17 years since my wife and I got married. According to the annual Real Weddings Study, the average wedding in the U.S. now costs $28,427, and that doesn't even count the honeymoon. Wait, it gets worse. Among the more than 17,500 surveyed brides who got married in 2012, the average amount paid for a wedding dress was $1,211. On average they also spent $204 per wedding guest and dropped $12,905 for the reception venue. There are many ways to rein in wedding-related costs while still having a memorable event. Here are a few suggestions: • Create a budget. Unless you're a professional wedding planner, you'll probably be floored by how many expenses weddings can amass, including: wedding and engagement rings, invitations, postage, marriage license, clergy and location fees, flowers, bridal gown and groom's tuxedo, rehearsal dinner and reception, photography, catering, DJ or band, limousine, parking attendants, tips, gifts for wedding participants and honeymoon expenses. • Shop around. Bridal expos are a good way to meet a lot of vendors and gather ideas. Just don't get caught up in the excitement and commit to anything before you've done follow-up research. Some tips: Bring along someone from the wedding party as well as a trustworthy friend who isn't emotionally and financially connected to the wedding. You may feel pressured by vendors to sign contracts or put down deposits, but it's probably wiser to take their contact information and research them first. Create a separate email account for wedding vendor communications. Once you sign up for one offer or contest, believe me, your inbox will be swamped. After you've settled on vendors, get signed contracts that specify dates,
products, prices, deposit and payment terms, cancellation policies, liability insurance and whether tax and gratuities are included.
Here are a few suggestions for trimming costs: • Date flexibility. You'll get more bang for your buck offseason – a June wedding might cost 20 to 30 percent more than one in April or October. • Have your florist use in-season flowers. • Daytime weddings are often cheaper than evening events. • Instead of a hotel, consider lesscostly alternative reception venues like community centers, museums, city park clubhouses or other public facilities looking to earn extra income. Ask whether they have their own tables, chairs, sound and lighting systems; if not, add equipment rental costs into the equation. • A buffet dinner reception could save you $15 or more per guest compared to a plated dinner, because you're not paying for table service. Save even more by hosting an afternoon reception and serving lunch or hors d'oeuvres. • If you're hosting a large reception, have a smaller display cake for the cutting ceremony, with a sheet cake stored in the kitchen. • Serve wine, beer and one signature cocktail, instead of offering a full bar. • Consider renting or buying a second-hand wedding dress from a consignment shop, or an online specialty site. The same goes for grooms wear. • Hiring a disc jockey instead of a live band will save hundreds of dollars; plus you get a broader selection of music and a built-in emcee to move things along. One last budgeting tip: Limit the number of guests to ensure you can have a meaningful interaction with each. Remember, spending just one minute apiece with 300 guests would take five hours. It's Spring and now that the snow has melted (for most of us), many would-be dog owners are turning their attention to rescue lists, shelters and breeders. As I look at my own dog, a 10 year old Labrador Retriever named Lincoln curled up on the couch next to me, I cannot help but think about the time when she will no longer
be around. Who will come after her? I find myself vacillating back and forth between pup or older dog, pure bred or mixed breed. Though I may be unclear about which direction I would go in choosing a dog, I know for certain which skills that I would like to teach my new dog-any dog for that matter, be she young or old. five skills for dogs, I think it's important to understand some of the things that may influence how you teach a particular skill. Factors such as age, confidence, physical limitations, and motivation will each play a part in how you train. Let's address each one of these factors individually. Age: Puppies are blank slates and have had less time to rehearse and commit to unwanted behaviors. You can have real influence on a puppy by insuring that he or she has the continued opportunity to interact with other puppies and dogs after they leave their litter and by purposefully introducing them to as many sights, sounds and smells as you can (in a non threatening way) to help to create a confident, social animal. By managing their environment, you can keep unwanted behaviors from happening in the first place. But a puppy can be tough. They have limited concentration, they chew and eliminate indiscriminately and they require lots and lots of attention. If you choose to adopt an older dog, you may have to spend some time resolving and managing problem behaviors first. Your ability to socialize a dog beyond its "critical period" (to 12 weeks) is
limited, so while you may be able to influence somewhat your dog's confidence, pretty much what you see is what you get. But unlike puppies an older dog may already have progressed through their super destructive chew period and with proper supervision should have the capacity to be easily housetrained. Training an adolescent dog comes with its own set of challenges. Dogs hit adolescence around five months and adolescence can last until the
dog is two or three depending on the breed and individual animal. Adolescence is characterized by more independent thinking; dogs will become less interested in you and more interested in the environment. Dogs go through their final phase of teething during this time. There is also a fear period associated with this phase - confident dogs may suddenly turn shy and fearful. Acquiring an adolescent dog will require that you be consistent in your management and training. Doing so will insure that you both make it through this time happy and whole. Confidence or the lack thereof: Learning is stressful. Keep an eye on your dog while training and watch for signs of stress - yawning, bows, scratching in the middle of a training session, shake-offs (like the dog is trying to shake off water). These behaviors don't necessarily indicate that your dog is unduly traumatized by learning, in fact, there is a good type of stress (called eustress) that actually enhances learning. Distress, the bad kind of stress, is what you are trying to avoid. You can do that by keep-
ing your training sessions short (three to five minutes for newbies.) Raise your criteria gradually, for example, if you are working on a downstay with the dog alone in the kitchen and you are asking for a 30 second stay, if you bring the dog outdoors to work on a stay understand this context will be much more difficult for the dog to perform in. Perhaps you work on a five second stay to begin with. Don't make things so difficult for your dog that he gives up. Set your dog up to be successful. The mores successes your dog has under his doggy belt, the more confident he will become. You will see an animal that loves learning and will therefore be more inclined to work for you even in the most difficult kind of situations. Avoiding stress will keep your dog engaged in the training process. Physical limitations: A dog's capacity to perform certain tasks can be limited by physical impairments. Limitations such as deafness and blindness would be obvious impediments (but not insurmountable, by the way) but something like advanced age or lameness or injury See MOTIVATION • Page 18

Sport Sweet little Sport Sport is a sweet little year old or so white Doxie/Chihuahua mix. When he came to us he was very timid and would hide his face under your armpit. He is now much better, but still wanting assurance. He will be playing with the other dogs and will stop to run over to his foster mom to make sure she is still there and glad to see him then he runs back to play. He is all white when he’s clean. Very mild mannered, likes to ride in the car but wants to be in your lap. He does chase cats if they run from him, but if they don't run, there’s no chasing. He is shaped like a Doxie, but we’ve been told he probably has Chihuahua in the mix. He is neutered, current on shots and is

Noteworthy ‘Savor the Flavor,’ a celebration of food and drink on August 3 The Tehachapi Family Life Pregnancy Center presents “Savor the Flavor” on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Centennial Plaza in downtown Tehachapi. An evening of great food and drink, “Savor the Flavor” promises to blend local culinary specialties, great wine, and satisfying brews from California vinters and breweries, to create an event that is “uniquely Tehachapi, distinctively California.” Formerly “The Tehachapi Food and Wine Festival,” “Savor the Flavor” will be presented under the leadership of local non-profit organizations. The Tehachapi Life Pregnancy Center is the lead management agency and will be joined by Mainstreet Tehachapi, Tehachapi Kiwainis Club, Tehachapi
Valley Wrestling Club and Tehachapi Youth Football to bring the evening’s events together. All five non-profit organizations will benefit. “Savor the Flavor” will be re-designed and more exclusive than in previous years. “We want to give event-goers a more intimate experience. From the food to the music to the wine, “Savor the Flavor” will be relaxed and friendly charity event under the beautiful Tehachapi stars,” said Kim Nixon, Executive Director of the Pregnancy Center. Ticket sales will be limited to 600 and priced at $60 for regular admission. 50 V.I.P tickets will be sold at $100 each and available to the first 50 people wanting an extraordinary experience of food and drink. Centennial
Plaza will be filled with the sound of jazz; intimate seating areas will dot the landscape; distinctive appetizers, delicious desserts, execeptional wines and outstanding crafted beers will be served. A silent auction will feature another fun way to support the local non-profits. Tickets go on sale the first part of June and will be available online and at local ticket locations. “Savor the Flavor” 2013 promises to deliver an evening of great food, delicious wines, crafted beers, delectable desserts, and uncompromising fun.
