ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of possibilities begin to open up by midweek. Some seem more appealing than others. But wait for more facts to emerge later on before you consider which to choose.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect to hear good news about a loved one. Also, be prepared for some changes in several family relationships that could develop from this lucky turn of events.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bravo to the determined Bovine. While others might give up, you continue to search for answers. Expect your Taurean tenacity to begin paying off by week's end.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprises are expected to accompany a number of changes that will continue through part of next week. At least one could involve a romantic situation.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to consider stepping back from the task at hand for a while. This could help you get a better perspective on what you've done and what still needs to be done.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to have faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your keen Cancerian insight should help you determine whether a new offer is solid or just more fluff 'n' stuff. The clues are all there waiting for you to find them.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace goal that suddenly seems out of reach is no problem for the surefooted Goat, who moves steadily forward despite any obstacles placed in his or her way.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being ignored is difficult for any proud Leo or Leona. But pushing yourself back into the spotlight might be unwise. Instead, let things work themselves out at their own pace.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Uncertainty about who is right and who isn't might keep you from making a clear-cut decision. Wait until you know more about what you're being asked to decide.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to uncover a colleague's secret under the pretext of showing concern is ill-advised. Control your curiosity to avoid raising resentment in the workplace.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful to keep your emotions in check when dealing with a demanding personal situation. You need to set an example of strength for others to follow.

Sesame Street Live taking over Rabobank stage June 4, 5 Generations of children have watched Big Bird and his friends on the PBS hit show “Sesame Street.” On June 4 and 5, children and families can see the characters come alive on stage as the Rabobank Theater presents Sesame Street Live “Can’t Stop Singing.” When Elmo gets his furry fingers on Abby Cadabby’s magic wand, there’s something in the air - and Sesame Street becomes a nonstop, allsinging, all-dancing musical montage. June 8: Chicken Run Chicken Run is a comedy escape drama with a touch of passion set on a sinister Yorkshire chicken farm in 1950's England. Tehachapi Heritage League hosts historical mystery walk June 15 The Tehachapi Heritage League invites community members to take a walk around downtown Tehachapi to learn about the history and residents of the 1920s era. The eight-block walk visits the exterior of five different buildings as well as the Errea House Museum, providing a great way to learn about the early residents and the history of Tehachapi. Each home will have a docent dressed in period costumes like those that would have been seen in Tehachapi during the 1920’s. The night will also include a scavenger hunt with prizes, additional costumed characters, children in
costume, antique cars and many other surprises. The tour will end at the Errea House for refreshments and a question and answer session with local historians. Reservations are suggested as the tour is limited and may sell out. The cost is $20 per person, no children under 12. Call the Tehachapi Museum at 661-822-8152 for reservations or come by the museum at 310 S. Green St. to register on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays from noon until 4 p.m. The tour begins with sign-in at 7 p.m. at the Errea House, 311 S. Laurence Juber plays at Fiddlers Crossing June 9 BY DEBORAH HAND-CUTLER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Two-time Grammywinning guitarist Laurence Juber will make his third appearance in Tehachapi on June 9, for a Sunday matinee concert at Fiddlers Crossing. Juber is a world-renowned guitar virtuoso, composer and arranger, who won his first Grammy as lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings. Since then, he has become particularly noted for his finger style interpretations of Beatles songs, including two CDs from the Beatle songbook. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My doctor gave me some very unsettling news. He says I have cataracts in both eyes. I haven't been able to sleep since he told me. My aunt was blind later in life. I don't know the cause, but I do know that life was very tough for her. I haven't contacted the ophthalmologist my doctor referred me to. I'm too scared. How are cataracts treated? How long is recuperation? -S.M. ANSWER: If a doctor examined the eyes of most people over 60, the doctor would tell them they have the beginning of a cataract. Do you know what a cataract is? Right behind the pupil is the eye's lens, a small, oval-shaped, perfectly clear structure. The lens focuses light on the retina in the back of the eye, so we get a clear picture of what we see. A cataract is a smudge in the lens. Proteins in the lens have stuck to
each other to produce a stain in the lens like a thumbprint on the lens of glasses. Your cataract must not be large. You have no complaints of it interfering with your vision. Most cataracts result from aging. Smoking, alcohol excess, constant exposure to sunlight and long-term use of high doses of cortisone drugs also contribute to cataract formation. The evolution of your cataract to one that blurs vision is unpredictable. The process is painless. Difficulty seeing at night and difficulty reading fine print are early symptoms of cataracts affecting vision. Treatment is close to miraculous. When the lens smudge greatly affects vision, the eye doctor removes the lens and replaces it with a
lens made of plastic or silicone. Cataract removal is done as an outpatient. You can be up and about by the evening of surgery or the following day. You'll be astounded at the minimum inconvenience of the procedure and with the vision that results from it. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What's the best time to take a multivitamin? I take one in the morning. That way I don't forget to take it. -- L.M. ANSWER: I believe this is the most frequently asked question I get. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble vitamins. They're better absorbed if they're taken after a meal that has some fat or oils in it. Vitamins B and C are water-soluble and can be taken at any time. I'm not convinced that the timing of vitamintaking is all that important. Take your multivitamin when it's most convenient.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I lift weights seven days a week. I see that I am making progress. My arms are much bigger than they were. I've been told I'm overdoing it by lifting every day. Am I? -R.S. ANSWER: It's not a good idea to perform the same weightlifting exercises on consecutive days. Muscles need a full 48 hours to recover, rebuild and grow after an intense exercise session. A day of lifting and then a day of rest is a good schedule. You can lift weights daily if you want to. Just don't work the same muscles on consecutive days. DR. DONOHUE regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Dye Natatorium closed for repairs Tehachapi swimmers received some bad news at last week’s meeting of the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks board of directors. Several members from the audience groaned with disapproval, as District Manager Matt Young announced that the Dye Natatorium, which houses Tehachapi's only public swimming pool, would remained closed for the entire summer after being shut down earlier this month. “My daily swim is very important,” said Mary Moreno who has been lap swimming six days a week at the pool everyday for a year. “I cannot afford to swim in Bakersfield and I don’t live in Bear Valley or Stallion Springs, so swimming is just going to be out of the question.” Closed since May 8, after mold was discovered in two areas, the 55-year-old facility will undergo a major makeover, which began this past weekend with the installation of a new, more modern roof. After the completion of the roof, which is expected to be finished in one to three weeks, phase II will begin, first removing the mold and then demolish-
ing, reconstructing and improving most of the facility's interior, including ceilings, some electrical and restroom amenities. The second stage of the project is expected to take at least a month. Young said the decision to close the pool during the busiest time of the year was a difficult one. And although the mold condition does not necessarily pose a significant health risk, the danger of falling plaster from the ceiling helped Young make the decision to shut off the pool to public access until repairs can be made. "I realize this is a major impact to programs and the community," he said. "But I cannot keep it (the pool) open at the expense of public health and safety." While the closure of the pool is a big inconvenience to swimmers, the financial consequence is a wash for the district, as the revenue from the pool’s summer programs is offset by the cost of operating the facility. “What we’re more concerned with is how the closure impacts the district’s ability to provide the highest level of service to our community,” Young said.

Ask the Wildlife Officer
What are rules about stowing fishing gear? Q&A from the Calif. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife BY CARRIE WILSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Question: I would like a definition of “stowed” in regard to fishing gear while transiting a state marine reserve. The reason I ask is that a sport fisherman reported he was stopped by a patrol boat at the Channel Islands and told he could have been cited for having his rods in the rod holders. He was told he should have had them in his small cuddy. It does not seem reasonable to require my buddies and I “stow” all our rods and reels in my cabin every time we need to make a move across a state marine reserve. Or when we are at an island, we should not be required to drive
six miles out, then whatever distance across, and then back in another six miles — at $4 or more a gallon. All of this would be quite a hardship for those of us fishing from private sport boats just to stow our fishing gear when maneuvering around state marine reserves. (Fred H., Anaheim) Answer: There is no requirement for equipment to be stowed under the Marine Life Protection Act laws covered in section 632 of the California Code of Regulations Title 14. CCR Title 14, section 632(8) covers the law you are referring to as follows: Transit or Drifting. Vessels shall be allowed to transit through marine protected areas and marine managed areas with catch onboard. Fishing gear shall not be deployed in
PHOTO COURTESY OF CALIF. DEPT. OF FISH & WILDLIFE
There are rules for moving your boat through special marine protection areas, but you don’t have to put your fishing gear completely away. the water while transiting through a state marine reserve. Fishing gear, except legal fishing gear used to take species identified as allowed for take in subsection 632(b), shall not be deployed in the water while transiting through a state marine recreational management area, state marine park or state marine conser-
vation area.
Don’t eat those mussels! Question: Yesterday we collected a few mussels at low tide at Chicken Ranch Beach with the kids (past the Inverness Yacht Club). They are of a decent size, about 3 to 4 inches, and all black. Are they safe to eat? (Ben)
Answer: Don’t eat those mussels! There is currently an advisory out against consuming sport-taken shellfish in Marin County. The California Department of Public Health shellfish biotoxin information line is (510) 412-4643 or tollfree at (800) 553-4133 – you can check with them at any time to see whether there are advisories in effect for your area.
How to catch an octopus? Question: My Italian grandmother asked my brother and me to bring home some fresh octopus so that she can make her favorite pasta dish. The only problem is we don’t know how to catch them. Can you help us out? (Joe K.) Answer: You will have to be creative on this one. Fortunately, there
are no size limits on octopus and the bag limit for each of you is 35 (CCR Title 14, section 29.05(a)). California sport fishing regulations allow you to catch them only by hook and line or with the hands (CCR Title 14, section 29.10(a)). You cannot catch them with traps or spears. The most common way to successfully catch them in California is by hand while diving with snorkel or scuba equipment. It’s also unlawful to use any chemicals, such as bleach, to attempt to disturb octopi from their hiding locations. CARRIE WILSON is a marine environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. While she cannot personally answer everyone’s questions, she will select a few to answer each week in this column. Please contact her at Cal.Outdoors@wildlife.ca.gov.

Home & Garden
(Family Features) Nothing brings people together quite like a neighborhood picnic or family celebration. So, gather up neighbors, friends and family for a celebration of great food and fun. Keep the food simple. Ask everyone to bring a favorite side dish so you only need to grill up the hamburgers and hot dogs. Of course, you'll also want to whip up a few special treats. What could be better than a popcorn bar? Popcorn is both good and good for you. It's a whole grain food that is not only low in calories but also makes a great addition to many recipes. Because, sometimes, a sweet indulgence is just what you need. Set out large bowls of popcorn along with shakers of garlic salt, cumin, lemon pepper, dry taco seasoning mix and Parmesan cheese for extra flavor. Add dried fruit, nuts, pretzel sticks, grated cheese and chocolate chips for a make-your-own trail mix option. Complete the popcorn bar with a few sweet surprises like delicious desserts made with freshly popped corn. For more creative recipes, visit www.popcorn.org.

Bring to a boil over low heat, stirring constantly; boil 2 to 3 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat. Spray 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray; press popcorn mixture into pan and cool completely. Cut into squares and serve. (Family Features) In the warmer months, we find ourselves outside more often, enjoying nature while playing with the kids and maintaining our lawns. But this additional time spent outside means more home and garden tools and more opportunity for a mess. Here are some simple tips to keep your outdoor spaces cleaner and more organized: Storage Bench - Use a storage bench to keep your gardening gloves, tools and children's outdoor toys. Available in a wide variety of sizes and styles, you can find the bench that fits your dÈcor. Plus, they offer an extra seating area when you have company. Bundle Cords - No one likes the unsightly appearance or hazard of cords. Before your gatherings, bundle together stereo and electronic chords that are exposed, as well as any cords that run across the lawn. Helpful products, such as Velcro One-Wrap ties, keep your items bound tight and out of sight. Paver Pots - Use old pavers to create plant con-
tainers. Simply stack the pavers together making a square shape. The heavy weight of the pavers keeps the dirt and plant contained together. Deck Space - Use the space under your deck for additional, out-of-sight storage. Tuck plastic lidded storage containers underneath for easy access to children's sporting goods and toys. Mesh Bags - Pool toys, rafts and inner tubes need a space to dry off. Use mesh bags so these summer toys properly are properly dried, preventing mildew or molding. Proper Plant Care - Stock up on essentials for a healthy garden, including the tools to make plant seedlings thrive, such as Velcro Peel Away seed pots. These pots make it easy to remove the pots without disturbing the roots, making transitions from pot to flower bed flawless. Repurpose Furniture Turn old furniture pieces, such as old filing cabinets, into instant garage storage solutions. Take out the
drawers of the cabinet and turn it on its side. Each empty drawer area provides a spot for large items like brooms, shovels and rakes. Fence Storage - Turn old coffee or paint cans into storage bins for smaller gardening tools like hand shovels and pruning shears. For easy access while in the garden, cut holes and use rope to hang around a closeby fence post. Tires - Stack old tires on top of each other for an outdoor toy container that kids can easily access. Paint the outside to match the color of your house or whatever color you fancy. End of Season Storage Keep your garage area tidy by organizing similar tools together. Use One-Wrap ties to keep gardening tools grouped together, or to keep hoses tightly coiled and out of the way. This product also comes in a variety of colors and sizes so that you can keep everything neat and organized. For more helpful home dÈcor, DIY and organization solutions, visit www.velcro.com.

The last few years have been tough economically for many people. Unemployment fears combined with plunging home, stock and retirement account values caused many to forgo big vacations – even though stressful times are when we most need to recharge our batteries. But with the economy turning around, many families are cautiously dipping their toes in the travel pool once again. Hotel occupancy rates have risen in many areas and airports are as crowded as ever. Airlines and hotels are notorious for tacking extra charges onto their bills. Here are a few to watch out for: A few airlines allow one free checked bag (Southwest still allows two), but most
charge up to $25 for the first checked bag each way, and even more for additional pieces. Plus, most now tack on hefty fees for overweight and over-sized checked and carry-on luggage, so measure and weigh your luggage carefully. Expect to pay extra for things like changing flights, extra leg room, priority boarding, unaccompanied minors, pets, Wi-Fi access and food. Some airlines even charge extra to speak to a live person or to buy your ticket at the airport counter or by phone. Airfarewatchdog.c om, Travelnerd.com and Kayak offer great
fee comparison charts for various airlines; but always double-check the airline's own posted rules before booking your flight. Some hotels charge extra if you check in before a certain time. Ask whether they'll store your luggage for free until check-in so you can begin sightseeing unencumbered. Many hotels charge a hefty penalty if you don't cancel a reservation 24 to 72 hours beforehand and some also charge an earlydeparture fee – sometimes the equivalent of one night's lodging. cancellation policy before booking, especially if you're looking at a discounted, non-refundable rate. Minibars often have electronic sensors that trigger a charge if you simply move the contents. Also, water or snacks sitting on the dresser may appear to
be complimentary, but double-check before consuming. Hotel parking in major cities can cost up to $50 a day, and many have mandatory valet parking, which means adding a tip on top of that. Research nearby municipal parking lots beforehand, or check the city's tourism bureau for
Dogs can be trained to avoid snakes : Each year approximately 150,000 dogs die from venomous snake bites in the United States. Although dogs do not naturally recognize and avoid snakes, they can be trained to do so. A leader in snake aversion training, Natural Solutions will provide rattlesnake aversion training on Saturday, June 8, at Thunder Paws Dog Training in Tehachapi. The training takes about fifteen minutes per dog. Natural Solutions’ handlers take the dog through sight, scent and sound recognition stations with live rattlesnakes to familiarize the dog with the snakes. The final station is designed to test what the dog has learned during the session. The cost is $75.00 for the first dog. For multi-dog households, the fee is reduced to $65.00 for each additional dog. To schedule your appointment for the training, contact Rosemary Evans at either 661-8672295 or rosemary@thunderpawsdogtraining.com. The training will take place at 20609 Santa Lucia, Unit C. Refreshments for dogs and their owners will be available.
hotels offering parking promotions. Sometimes using public transportation and taxis is cheaper overall than paying for parking. Some hotels and resorts automatically add housekeeping or spa gratuities to your bill, so ask first before leaving your own tip – unless of course the service was
terrific. Most hotels charge exorbitant amounts for local and long-distance calls made from room phones, so use your cellphone. Resorts often charge extra for services they offer – such as gym access or daily newspaper delivery – even if you don't use them. Find out the policy ahead of time and scrutinize your bill for unused services.
Ask to see your bill the night before you check out, so you can review it carefully for overcharges. If you're traveling abroad, be aware that using your cellphone can be mighty expensive. Research your carrier's international calling plan and ask whether your phone is compatible with foreign networks. You may need to rent an international cellphone,
or buy or rent an unlocked phone and international SIM card. If your budget's in good shape and you're getting wanderlust, maybe it's time to venture out into the world again. Just be cautious about how hidden expenses can add up. JASON ALDERMAN directs Visa's financial education programs. To Follow Jason Alderman on Twitter: www.twitter.com/PracticalMoney

Skippy
Super Skippy My name is Skippy, I’m a 2 ½ year young, 11 pound male Border Terrier mix Save Tehachapi’s Orphaned Pets (STOP) rescued from high-kill shelter. I’m a kind, gentle old soul, not a barker, play well with others, like car rides, leash-trained and I am housetrained (via doggie door). If you want to be the special one to welcome super Skippy in to your heart and home, please call Marsha at 661823-7868. Why not adopt this mellow fellow, your new best friend, the one who will never disappoint you, ever?
L'oreal
L’oreal girl Loreal is a six month old spayed female gray tabby kitty who was abandoned by a callous owner when they moved and decided that Loreal and her sisters could fend for themselves. She has beautiful white "eyeliner" around her eyes, and is the sweetest of all possible sweet cats in the world. She lives to be with her person, loves to talk in her unusual half-meow voice, and is probably the
most affectionate kitty we have ever had in our foster. She has never been outside and is adoptable as an indoor kitty only. She faithfully uses the kitty box and scratch tower, but she does like to get up on the kitchen counter, a habit quickly remedied by the use of a water squirt bottle. She is ready to be a forever kitty for someone special! Call Have a Heart Humane Society at 661750-2261 for more info.

As soon as he gains a few ounces, we will have him neutered and microchipped. This little guy is bright, alert, and curious about everything. He loves to play with the other dogs and thinks he is very big. He met some cats and didn't growl

Noteworthy Wildlife officials remind residents to be rattlesnake safe As warm weather returns, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is reminding the public to be rattlesnake safe. All of California is snake country. Much like bats, rattlesnakes are often misunderstood. They play an important role in the ecosystem by keeping rodent populations under control. California has six venomous snakes, all of which are various species of rattlesnake. They are heavy-bodied, blunttailed with triangularshaped heads. A rattle
may not always be present, as they are often lost through breakage and not developed on the young. Additional species information can be found here: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/n ews/issues/snake.html. Rattlesnakes are generally not aggressive and usually strike when threatened or provoked. Given room, they will retreat and want to be left alone. They are not confined to rural areas and have been found in urban environments, lakeside parks and golf courses. The best protection against unwelcome rat-
tlesnakes in the yard is to have a “rattlesnakeproof” fence. The fence should either be solid or with mesh no larger than one-quarter inch. It should be at least 3 feet high with the bottom buried a few inches in the ground. Keep the fence clear of vegetation and debris. Encourage and protect kingsnakes, which prey on rattlesnakes, and other natural competitors like gopher snakes and racers. On rare occasions, rattlesnakes can cause serious injury to humans. Most bites occur between
the months of April and October when humans are most active outdoors. CDFW recommends the following outdoor safety precautions: • Wear hiking boots and loose-fitting long pants. • Never go barefoot or wear sandals when walking through wild areas. • When hiking, stick to well-used trails. • Avoid tall grass, weeds and heavy underbrush where snakes may hide during the day. • Do not step or put your hands where you cannot see, and avoid wandering around in the dark.
WORSHIP
• Step ON logs and rocks, never over them, and be especially careful when climbing rocks or gathering firewood. • Remember, rattlesnakes can swim so never grab “sticks” or “branches” while swimming in lakes and rivers. • Teach children to respect snakes and to leave them alone. What to do in the event of a snake bite: • Stay calm and wash the bite area gently with soap and water. • Remove watches, rings, etc, which may constrict swelling.
• Immobilize the affected area and go to the nearest medical facility. What you should NOT do after a rattlesnake bite: • DON’T apply a tourniquet. • DON’T pack the bite area in ice. • DON’T cut the wound with a knife or razor. • DON’T use your mouth to suck out the venom. • DON’T let the victim drink alcohol. For more general information on rattlesnakes, visit: http://tinyurl.com/7pc 9e7w

Kern Schools credit union receives Visa award Kern Schools Federal Credit Union was recently awarded with a Visa Service Quality Performance Award, as a top performer for “Highest Chargeback Effective-
ness,” according to a news release from the company. Established in 1992, the Visa Service Quality Awards recognize exceptional card operations
performance by issuers, acquirers, and processors. These awards reinforce Visa’s commitment to best-in-class operations, acknowledging consistent, superior
performance as well as continued service quality improvement in key areas that directly affect Visa cardholders and merchants. From hundreds of peer
financial institutions, Kern Schools was one of only three to receive this award. The “Highest Chargeback Effectiveness” reflects an organization’s strong efficiency when evaluating and processing potential chargebacks in accordance with Visa dispute
policies and regulations. Kern Schools would like to applaud the services and hard work of its Central Operations – Visa Department in achieving this distinction. For more information, visit www.ksfcu.org.
