Is your hearing loss just earwax? Believe it or not, many times hearing loss is simply a symptom of too much earwax. Let the experts at WALL’S Hearing Aid Center assess the cause of your hearing loss with a free video otoscope screening.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An apparent act of injustice might turn out to be either an error in judgment or just plain stupidity. So calm down and cool off, and let the explanations roll out.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch your budget so that you don't overspend now and have less to invest when the time is right later on. Arrange to share your weekend with someone special.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It's upsetting when someone you trusted might have failed you. But with new opportunities ahead, you'll soon be too busy to feel even a wee bit sorry for yourself.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The temptation to involve yourself in a friend's or family member's personal problems is laudable. But get the facts before you make a firm commitment.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sense of uncertainty could be a good reason to change your position on an important matter. Someone close might try to talk you out of it, but it's your decision to make.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to keep the faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Being too zealous in pursuing your goal could create some resistance. Try to be more mindful of what you ask people to do, and they'll be more likely to do it.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You've reached an important point in your ongoing pursuit of your goals. You might now want to consider letting someone you trust join you on your journey.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Things change as you go from being ignored to being Lionized once again. This is a good time to reintroduce those previously rejected ideas to a more receptive audience.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You've been going through a spate of uncertainty involving people you care for. But it might be time to take a stand on a position you feel sure you can defend.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone new in your life creates both anticipation as well as anxiety. Avoid the potential for misunderstandings by watching what you say and how you say it.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Treading water keeps you busy, but it won't get you where you need to go. Time to stop making excuses and to start moving ahead toward your goals.

“The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd” arrives on the BeeKay Theatre stage beginning June 14 Musicals are a favorite among Tehachapi theater-goers and one opening at the Beekay Theatre in Tehachapi on June 14 will not disappoint. “The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd” is an allegorical story, set in 1960s England, about the constant conflict between upper and lower classes. Although the classic was originally written in 1964, the class-war storyline remains tangible to even today’s audiences. The musical follows arrogant Sir, played by Dick Best, who is forever changing the rules of the “game of life” so that downtrodden young Cocky, played by Thaer Irvin, always gets the short end of the stick. Assisting Sir is his eager disciple, Kid, played by Ali Whitlach, who is anxious to pick up bits of wisdom while helping keep Cocky in his place. Well-known songs in the show such as “Feeling Good,” recently made popular by Micheal Bublé and Jennifer Hudson, and “Who Can I Turn To?” which has been covered by legends Van Morrison and Harry Connick, Jr.,

Health & Fitness Ask the Doctor
Pleural effusion is fluid around lungs BY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D. CONTRIBUTING WRITER

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had a little trouble breathing, so I saw my doctor, who ordered a chest X-ray. It showed fluid on the right lung. The doctor said he would have to do more tests to find out why the fluid appeared. Could you guess for me what those tests might be? What brought this on? -- R.H. ANSWER: A doubleply covering, called the pleura, encases each lung. A small space between the two leaves of pleura allows the lung to inflate and deflate effortlessly. The fluid you have is in the pleural space. The condition is a pleural effusion. The fluid is not actually in lung tissue. Infections, illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, heart failure, blood clots in the lungs, liver cirrhosis and chest trauma are some of the causes of pleural effusions. Cancer is another cause. Shortness of breath, chest discomfort and
cough are some of the things that a pleural effusion engenders. Some people with an effusion have no symptoms at all. The fluid is discovered when a person has a chest Xray, as was the case with you. The doctor is most probably planning to obtain a specimen of the fluid from the pleura. It's not a difficult procedure. Analysis of the fluid provides information that determines what caused it. That information also allows the doctor to determine a treatment plan and provide you with a prognosis of what to expect. I'd like to speculate further for you, but I can't. I need more information too. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I was given Avodart to treat an enlarged prostate gland. During the six months of taking
it, I went from a fully functioning man with a strong libido to 99 percent impotence and no interest in physical intimacy. My physician does not seem to care. What kind of treatment should I seek? -- H.L ANSWER: Avodart (dutasteride) is a medicine that can shrink an enlarged prostate gland. Achieving that allows free passage of urine. Impotence and decreased desire for sex are its side effects for a small number of users. Other drugs, without these side effects, exist. Furthermore, a number of office procedures can open the drainage canal of the bladder. You return home after the procedure. You should see a urologist immediately. Prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are discussed in the booklet on those topics. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two weeks ago, I contracted a cold. It's gone, except for a troublesome cough, which is worse at night. I read in an issue of AARP Bulletin that a spoonful of honey at bedtime often gives better results than cough medicines. I tried it. The results were nothing less than miraculous. What do you say about this remedy? -- F.B. ANSWER: I say stick with it. Honey has been used for many years to suppress coughing. It's even given to babies older than one year. DR. DONOHUE regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. © 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

What you probably won't hear them mention are the many uses of a product most of us already have in our homes. Powder can be found in a variety of summertime sports and recreational activities. For many, it is a thing of ritual: the puff of powdered rosin that helps an AllStar pitcher gain the ideal grip on a baseball. The pre-game chalk toss
in basketball, made even more popular by the sport's greatest player, LeBron James. It's even useful for billiards players and bowlers. Powder-based products also are helpful for exercising and other common seasonal activities. Powder helps joggers avoid chafing, helps homeowners handling yard work keep their hands dry inside work gloves, and helps weekend warriors out there counteract foot and shoe odors and treat athlete's foot. According to Pharma Tech Industries — the
largest pharmaceutical contract manufacturer and packager of powder products in the world — powder products have a long list of other benefits during the warm weather season, including: • Airplane-friendly: Most powders are exempt from the airplane carry-on "3-ounce rule" limitations on liquids and gels. • Easily brush off sand: Savvy sun soakers keep powder in the same beach bag as their sunscreen for easy sand removal. • Natural ant repellent: Scatter powder around
house foundations and common points of insect entry, such as doors and windows. The same trick is useful for the edges of picnic tables and blankets. • Stop floorboards from squeaking: For a quick fix, sprinkle powder between the boards that squeak. • Get rid of greasy carpet stains: Cover unsightly stains with powder, wait six hours, then simply vacuum the stain away. • Pet care: Dry shampoo your dog after a day of fun in the sun.

Journey
Highland Springs Resort; over 100 years of rustic charm BY MATTHEW MARTZ TEHACHAPI NEWS
Whether you're going on a day trip, embarking on a weekend journey or planning an extended stay vacation that's close to home, Highland Springs Resort in the city of Cherry Valley is a relaxing departure far-removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. Established in the early 1800s to serve as a stage coach stop, it wasn't until the 1920s and ’30s that the resort, with its three-story Victorianstyle hotel, gained popularity and notoriety as a revolutionary health getaway frequented by celebrities including Bob Hope and Albert Einstein. Surrounded by sprawling olive groves, fields of fragrant lavender and a 1,100-year-old towering Coastal Live Oak tree, today the economy resort offers guests cottage-style rooms and suites with the same rustic charm and historic character of its yesteryears, while providing a modern venue for weddings, conven-
tions and other group activities. Bordered by the rolling hills of the San Gorgonio Pass to the south and the San Bernardino mountains to the north, part of the resort's preservation efforts bedsides maintaining its historic buildings, is to sustain a peaceful coexist with all the wildlife on the property. Families of white tailed mule deer, jackrabbits, coyotes and many types of rare Californian birds are often spotted by visitors as they roam many of the area's pristine hiking trails, which range from an easy 40minute walk to a moderate four-hour hike. However, not all of the animals on the property are wild, as the resort also has a variety of domesticated farm animals including sheep, chickens, pot bellied pigs and dairy cows on its 20-acre organic farm, which serves as a summer science camp for kids. The resort also sponsors an annual Lavender Festival in June, a Sausage and Beer Festival in August and an Olive and
Wine Faire in October featuring olive oil pressed from its own trees. Just a short two-hour drive from downtown Tehachapi, the Highland Springs Resort has not lost the charms nor its idyllic landscape that have made it a popular destination for over a 100 years. The natural beauty of its 2,400 acres of virtually untouched land is still being shared with the today's visitors. For those that plan to stay more than a day, the resort has 88 guest rooms ranging in price from $89 to $129. There is also a steakhouse on the property that serves dinners to the public using some of the farm's 100 percent organic crop production, Wednesday through Saturday. Visitors do not have to be a guest of the hotel to enjoy the areas hiking trails, but must register in lobby and obtain a pass in order to walk the grounds. There is no charge for going on the trails and maps are available at the resort's

What happens to fish or game seized by wardens? Q&A for the Dept. of Fish & Wildlife BY CARRIE WILSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Question: What do the wardens do with the seized abalone, crab, cod, salmon, etc.? You can’t tell me that it gets thrown away! (Austin) Answer: When unlawfully taken fish or game is seized, it is kept as evidence until the case is settled or until the judge orders it returned. In most cases though, if at all possible and in good condition, seized fish and game is given to the homeless shelters or soup kitchens that allow donations of wild fish and game. Because of inspection requirements, some facilities may not be able to accept these donations. If a suitable facility cannot be found, the evidence is thrown away or destroyed. In some commercial cases involving
commercial size loads, the Fish and Game Code allows for this evidence to be sold and the proceeds may be used by the Department.
Shrimp fishing Question: I would like to do some shrimp fishing but when I read the regulations, they say shrimp traps can’t have an opening larger than a half-inch in diameter in waters south of Point Conception. This makes it impossible to catch any of decent size. Are there different regs for spot prawns which are quite large and could never fit through this size hole? (Jesse Link) Answer: Your reading of the regulations is correct on the size of the trap opening, and you are also right about the opening size making it impossible to catch large spot prawn. According to California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) senior marine invertebrate specialist Kristine Barsky, when that regulation was developed, there was no

CDFW game wardens, working from an anonymous tip back in 2007, apprehended three poachers fishing in Clear Lake and seized 151 crappie (76 over the limit). The trio plead no contest and paid stiff fines in excess of $7,200. The seized catch is pictured here. interest in catching spot prawn recreationally. The reason was because they are found so deep (80 to 100 fathoms) and it is time-consuming to raise and lower traps to that depth when the daily bag limit is only 35 shrimp. In more northern states spot prawns are found in shallower water, but off Southern California they stay deep. The opening was kept small to prevent take of short lobster in this area. As always, you are free to develop suggestions for regulation changes that you may present to the Fish and Game Commission.
Fishing during closed season Question: In the freshwater regulation hand book under Section 1.38 it states: “CLOSED SEASON. That period during which the taking of fish, amphibians, reptiles, mollusks or crustaceans is prohibited.” Can a person still fish during a closed season as long they release all the fish they catch? In other words, I would practice catch and release and use barbless hooks to protect the fish from further harm. The regulation restricts the taking of fish, but no fish will be
taken. I am very confused. Can you help clarify?. (Robin O.) Answer: Fishing during a closed season is prohibited, period. Even though you don’t intend to take any fish away with you, the definition of take is to “Hunt, pursue, catch, capture or kill fish, amphibians, reptiles, mollusks, crustaceans or invertebrates or attempting to do so” (CCR Title 14, section 1.80). Therefore, despite your best methods, even the attempt to fish is prohibited. There are few exceptions, but the take of crayfish other than with hook and line is authorized under 5.35 (e) when a stream is otherwise closed to fishing.
Max rounds in hunting rifle? Question: What is the maximum number of rounds you can have in your hunting rifle? I have heard it is five rounds but other people have said the California limit is 10 rounds. What’s the correct answer? (Nick Holly)
Answer: Most rifles hold three to five rounds, but the California penal code allows for up to 10 rounds. There are no California Fish and Game Code sections that address limits on the number of rounds a rifle may hold. Remember the Penal Code prohibits the purchase or sale of ten round rifles. There are many rifles out there that were purchased long before these laws went into effect that are perfectly legal. Many people own .22 caliber rifles with tube magazine and high capacities. These are not outlawed and can be used for hunting small game. Many people have carbines and other rifles bought long ago and they too are still legal even with a 30 round magazine. Practical Money Matters
Leasing a car on the cheap BY JASON ALDERMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER
My trusty Volvo wagon served our family well for 13 years, but after 106,000 miles it finally gave up the ghost. My wife just completed graduate school so we weren't ready to commit to a new car payment. I rented a car at first, but at $500 a month, that soon got old. Then I came across a concept new me: assuming someone else's car lease. Initially I was skeptical, but after considerable research I took the plunge. It took many emails and phone calls and a month-long wait for the paperwork to clear, but I now have a one-year lease on a quality car whose monthly cost is about a third less than the stripped-down model I was renting. With the caveat that car lease assumption is not right for everyone, here's how the process works: People need to get out of their car leases for a variety of reasons but it's notoriously difficult to do so — you usually must pay the outstanding balance plus an early termination fee.
One way around this, if your finance company allows it, is to transfer the lease to another party for the remainder of its term. Many people use online lease assumption services like Swapalease.com and LeaseTrader.com. I went with Swapalease.com. These companies match people wanting to unload their lease (think of them as "sellers") with so-called "buyers" interested taking over the remainder of someone's lease. Among the potential advantages for buyers: No down payment. You can secure a shorter-term lease. Sellers will generally offer or agree to financial incentives to unload their lease. Newer cars are usually still under warranty. However, be aware of the many fees involved on both sides of the transaction: Sellers are charged a fee to advertise their vehicle on the websites (generally $50 to $150), and a transaction fee if a lease transfer is initiated ($100 to $150). Buyers pay a registration fee to obtain contact information for sellers

(around $40 to $80). Some sites charge buyers a transaction fee as well. Buyers must file a credit application with the lender which can cost up to several hundred dollars; the fee typically isn't refundable if the credit check deems you aren't creditworthy. The leasing company itself will typically charge the buyer a lease transfer fee (typically $50 to $600). A few additional suggestions and precautions: Inspect the car and note any damage. You may also want to have a mechanic inspect it. Ask whether the lender will remove the seller's name from the lease – some won't. During negotiations, ask the seller to pay the application and lease transfer
fees. It doesn't hurt to ask and you're still saving them a ton of money. Don't expect a lot of customer service from the swapping website. Make sure there's enough mileage left on the lease to suit your needs. You'll have to pay DMV registration fees and sales tax may apply. Your insurance company will need to provide the leasing company with evidence that you have adequate coverage. Know that it can take several weeks or more for the transaction to fully close. For me, that meant an extra month's rental. All in all, if you're flexible about what kind of car you're willing to drive and not in a big hurry, assuming someone else's lease can be a viable option. Just make sure to do your due diligence.
How to get approved for a mortgage METRO — Real estate professionals say the market is rebounding, and many would-be home buyers are eagerly awaiting their opportunities to purchase their own homes. Fresh data indicates that the inventory of properties is quickly drying up and soon the market is poised to point in the sellers' favor. However, no matter how many affordable homes are available, if a buyer cannot get approved for a mortgage, then his or her chances of owning a home are slim. In the wake of a tumultuous economy, many lenders tightened restrictions on mortgage lending. And even though the economy has rebounded, many lenders have continued to follow strict guidelines before lending money. In order to secure a mortgage with a good interest rate, buyers must take control of their financial situations and fix problems that could lead to loan rejection. Many things can impact a mortgage application. Here are the ways
to overcome liabilities and improve your standing with prospective lenders. • Know your credit rating. Your credit rating is a score that lenders rely on when deciding whether or not to approve your mortgage application. The higher the credit rating, the more attractive you look to prospective lenders. But the lower your score is, the more difficulty you will have getting a loan. Should you get a loan with a low score, you may have to pay a higher interest rate than someone with better credit. Prior to making any big financial decisions, such as applying for a mortgage, it is vital to find out your credit score. You can request a free copy of your credit report, which includes your credit score, once a year from the three major credit reporting agencies in the United States and Canada: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. You also can pay for your credit report. • Address any issues on your report. Once you know your score, you can
take steps to address any issues on the report. Pay down revolving consumer debts, such as credit card balances and auto loans. Report any errors on your credit report so they can be adjusted. Pay bills on time and address any notices of collections before they make it onto your permanent record. If you will be applying for a loan soon, avoid opening any other credit accounts for the time being. • Save, save, save. Having more money in the bank lowers your loan-tovalue ratio, or LTV. This will make you appear less risky to lenders. Individuals who have saved for a considerable down payment on a home are also seen in a better light. • Make sure you have a credit history. Some people are too cautious with their credit and think closing accounts or avoiding credit entirely will make them more attractive to lenders. But this can backfire. Lenders will want to see a strong credit history that indicates your ability to pay your debts on time.

Gardening Time
Some ideas about how to 'deer-proof' your garden METRO – Creating a beautiful and bountiful garden is a popular pastime for people all across the country. It is important to keep in mind that aesthetically appealing plants may be appetizing to area wildlife, including deer. Those who do not want their gardens to turn into all-you-can-eat buffets for deer, rabbits and other wild animals can take a more proactive approach to gardening. Deer are opportunists who will no doubt see your garden as a salad bar ripe with all of their favorite foods. As housing developments continue to encroach on the natural habitats of deer and other animals, these animals are becoming more visible. Deer may
not be able to forage for food effectively in their smaller, natural surroundings, or they may become accustomed to the "easy pickings" they find in neighborhood yards. Either way, you may encounter a deer in or around your area. Keeping deer at bay involves some work and maintenance on the part of a homeowner. There are safe and humane methods to repelling deer, or at least blocking access to the plants worth protecting. Here are the main ways to deer-proof a garden.
Fence It Fences are one way to deter deer from entering a yard and dining on your garden. Keep in mind that deer can jump fences that are quite tall, but they have to be espe-
cially motivated to jump an eight-foot-tall fence. Still, they tend to be weary about scaling a fence when they cannot see what is on the other side. Therefore, if you are fencing out deer, choose a fence that camouflages the garden well and completely encloses the area to be protected. If you do not want the fence to be solid, consider putting stakes or thorny plants within the garden so that the deer will hesitate to jump into the garden.
Scare Them Deer are naturally skittish around people, but over time they can become quite complacent around human beings. Once a deer decides that something will not present a threat, the deer can adapt to its
presence. Motion-activated devices may not work, nor the presence of pets. Predator urine is typically an effective way at keeping deer at bay. Bottled coyote urine can be quite effective, although human urine may work as well. Reapplying the product weekly around the plants is a good idea.
Repel the Deer There are many organic or chemically-based products on the market that deer may find offensive to the taste or smell. Hot pepper, sulfur and eggs or even the use of soapy water have been successful in certain instances. The use of blood meal or even human hair around the garden may repel the deer and keep them on a different foraging path.
However, remember that any deer that is very hungry may ignore unpleasant tastes or smells for a quick bite.
Change Plants If other food sources are available, there are some species of plants and trees that deer will avoid. Filling your garden with these plants can help you maintain a beautiful, albeit untasty, environment for deer. When planting annuals, select among: • Alyssum • Begonias • Calendula • Celosia • Dianthus • Foxglove • Geraniums • Parsley • Poppy • Snapdragons In terms of perennials, plant these items once,
and deer could stay away: • Ageratum • Anemone • Astibe • Bearded iris • Catmint • Honeysuckle • Lantana • Monkshood • Rock rose • Rosemary • Soapwort • Wisteria Plant these herbs alongside flowers for even more protection: • Chives • Eucalyptus • Garlic • Mint • Thyme • Wintergreen Gardeners who use a combination of methods to keep deer out of their yards and gardens may have a higher success rate at deterring these animals.
How to manage your difficult yard situations METRO – Many homeowners aim for a picture perfect lawn complete with rolling acres of soft, green grass. But Mother Nature may have other things in mind, providing homeowners with less-thanstellar growing conditions for their lawns, plants and other foliage. Frustration can mount when a yard is muddy, is especially shady or has soil that doesn't seem to grow a thing. In such instances, homeowners may have to go the extra mile to get the yard they desire.
erty may need to be regraded to make a difference.
Sandy soil Grass and other plants may not grow well with sandy or clay soil. Again, amending the soil is one way to remedy the problem. Although it will take some work at the outset, amending the soil can improve conditions and reduce how much maintenance the lawn needs. Digging down several inches and adding nutrient-rich filler soil will help create conditions that are better for growing. Those who are interested in planting vegetables could opt for raised garden beds above the challenging soil.
Irrigation issues Improper drainage or low-lying areas in a yard may contribute to a muddy mess. Soil that is inhospitable for grass also may end up causing muddy patches because the grass simply does not grow. In some cases, remedying a muddy yard is easy and inexpensive. Some homeowners find that tilling the soil and amending it with a fiber mulch helps to absorb extra water and make the conditions better for

spend some more money to fix irrigation issues. Installing a draining system or having the property sloped to draw water away can sometimes be done by a homeowner but is often best left to a professional. You may need to dig trenches, and the prop-
Sometimes a yard is problematic because of the amount of sunshine it receives. Too much sunshine can scald certain grasses, while inadequate sunshine may result in bare patches where grass won't grow. If cost is no object, removing or planting trees to establish better growing conditions could be an option. How-
ever, today there are many grass blends that are tailored toward specific sunlight scenarios. Homeowners may find that low-light blends will grow better in shady areas. For those who are finding no luck with grass blends, it may just be necessary to think creatively. Plant shadeloving plants, such as ferns or ground cover, where the grass won't

There are different options for managing various situations in the yard that can make growing lawn or other plants challenging. If projects are difficult, it could be smart to call in a professional.
Did you know? METRO — Landscape fabrics are used to prevent weed growth while still allowing air, oxygen and water to flow to and from the soil. Landscape fabrics are a chemical-free way to prevent weed growth, endearing them to ecofriendly homeowners. Landscape fabrics, once laid, also are a far less labor-intensive method to prevent weed growth, as they can be effective for several years, during which homeowners can expect to perform little or no maintenance. In addition, many homeowners prefer landscape fabrics because they can help the soil effectively maintain moisture during dry periods, when gardens might otherwise be highly susceptible to drought. Once put down, landscape fabric can be covered with mulch to add aesthetic appeal.

Too hot to fly: Summer airline pet embargoes BY KIM SALERNO CONTRIBUTING WRITER
If you're traveling with your pet this summer and plan to fly to your destination, make sure you familiarize yourself with the airline's pet embargo policy before you book your flight. During the summer, many airlines don't allow pets
aboard flights-as checked baggage or as cargo-when temperatures are high. Airline pet embargoes are in the best interest of your pet and play a vital role in ensuring his safety. Not only is air travel stressful for your pet, but it can also pose serious health risks. Being confined
in his carrier for long periods of time during the hottest months of the year is potentially dangerous for your pet and may lead to dehydration and heatstroke. In addition, certain breeds, such as brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs and cats, are susceptible to pulmonary distress when temperatures are extreme. According to the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA), embargoes protect pets from exposure to extreme heat while they're in the holding areas and terminal facilities, while moving them between terminals and aircraft, or while they're on an aircraft awaiting departure. Since airlines impose embargoes to ensure your pet's safety, there are no exceptions. However, if an embargo is in effect on the day of your flight, the airline will work with you to re-route your flight, if possible, or schedule your flight for another day. Although each airline establishes its own policies for pet embargoes, the following are a few commercial airlines and some of their regulations. Alaska Airlines Although Alaska Airlines doesn't have any embargoes scheduled this summer, if temperatures are too high for pets to travel safely, they may place an
embargo. However, your pet may travel with you in the cabin if he fits in an approved carrier that can be placed under your seat. American Airlines - To ensure your pet isn't exposed to extreme heat, American Airlines imposes an embargo any time the current or forecasted temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary. However, if your pet fits in an approved carrier that can be placed under your seat, he can travel with you in the cabin. Delta Air Lines - To ensure the safety of your pet, Delta places an embargo on pets as checked baggage from May 15 through September 15. If at any point-origin, transit, destination-the temperature is forecast to be above 85 degrees Fahrenheit-or 75 degrees Fahrenheit for brachycephalic pets-your
pet can't travel. However, your pet may be able to fly as cargo via the Summer Live Animal Program. (Restrictions apply, particularly for brachycephalic pets.) Launched in 2011, the program, which is in effect from May 15 through October 15, lifts temperature restrictions and provides safe transportation of your pet in select cities. Delta Cargo uses climatecontrolled vans to pick up and deliver your pet to or from the plane, holding areas, and cargo facilities. Your pet is also loaded or unloaded according to specific time frames. In addition, your pet may travel with you in the cabin if he fits in an approved carrier that can be placed under your seat. Southwest Airlines Since Southwest Airlines doesn't allow pets to travel as checked baggage or in the cargo hold, they don't
impose pet embargoes. Your small cat or dog can travel with you in the cabin in an approved carrier that is small enough to fit under your seat. Since each airline has a different summer pet embargo policy, visit TripsWithPets.com and review our Airline Pet Policies. And don't forget to review our Pet Travel Tips for Flying and check out the airlineapproved carriers at the TWP Store. TripsWithPets.com is the #1 online resource for pet travel. International Chili Society-sanctioned Chili Cook-off will feature competitors from all over California. Vying for the ICS title, our own local chili "warriors" will be battling it out to win

Classics. To round out a day shared with dad will be live music provided by local favorite Denim. Vendors galore will sell everything from jewelry, Scentsy and natural beauty products. Food vendors will provide a bounty of choices such as Tri-tip sandwiches,
shaved ice, hot dogs and more. Bounce houses, children's games including ping-pong toss, Wheel of Prizes and face painting will be offered for children. To participate in the Chili competition, call the Main Street Tehachapi office at 822-6519.
