ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cheer up, Lamb. Your emotional impasse will lift once you allow your highly tuned sense of justice to guide you on what to do about an associate's questionable behavior.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Home and work issues vie for your attention through early next week. Rely on your Libran sense of balance to keep you from being overwhelmed by either side.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) News about a project you hoped to work on might need more clarification. Take nothing just on faith. Draw up a list of questions, and insist on each being fully answered.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creative projects might have to go on standby as you tackle other matters making demands on your time and energy. Things should ease by the middle of next week.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Giving your time to help others is fine. But don't lose sight of your own needs. Make plans for an energy-restoring getaway with that very special person in your life.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your energies are high, and so are your aspirations. But be careful not to let work dominate the week. It's also important to spend time with family and friends.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Congratulate yourself on getting that difficult job done to everyone's satisfaction. This could be the first of many such challenges you might be offered down the line.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It's a good time to set aside your pride and stop nursing those hurt feelings. Instead, consider restoring relationships you want to have back in your life.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) With your enthusiasm soaring again, you feel ready to tackle a tough new assignment. Good for you! And remember: Don't be too proud to accept help when it's offered.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might be miffed at not being shown more appreciation for your hard work. But don't brood over it. Recognition comes in its own time and in its own way.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Cupid rules the week for single Virgos eager to make a romantic connection. Meanwhile, Virgo couples experience renewed commitment in their relationships.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With your inner creative juices starting to boil and bubble, this is a good time to launch a new arts-related project, or go back and restart the one you had set aside.

Indian Point Ostrich Ranch is celebrating its 21st year on June 22, 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. with a special day at the ranch. Last year almost 1,000 people attended the festivities. Founder Joel Brust said they are doubling the number of giveaways because of the celebration’s popularity. No entrance fee is required and the first 200 kids will enjoy free ostrich egg shell painting, free bounce house admission, free popcorn and a drink. Boy Scouts of America Troop 3 of Tehachapi will sell hot dogs and drinks as a fundraiser at the celebration. The ranch owners consider this anniversary celebration a wonderful opportunity to thank their friends, neighbors, visitors and customers for 21 great years. In addition to Indian Point being a working ranch, it is also a thriving tourist destination. Each year thousands of tours are conducted for schools, groups, families and walk-in visitors. Guided tours of the ranch are offered daily and visitors can feed the birds. The ranch’s new virtual attraction, “Experience the Ostrich,” has been a big hit and visitors who wish to participate can take advantage of a better streamlined process to accommodate more riders. Indian Point Ostrich Ranch was established in 1992 and is one of the largest working ostrich ranches in the western United States. The operation is similar to cattle ranching with the production of a lean red meat for steaks and burgers and up-scale leather that is used primarily for boots. Unlike cattle, this abundant bird also provides wonderful eggs for cooking (just like a giant chicken egg), ostrich oils, lotions, empty egg shells for artistic use, egg shell jewelry, feather dusters and more.

By Emily Brunett Tehachapi News Joel Brust squinted in the bright light of the morning sunshine. His gaze and weathered hand drifted across the land before him; 80 acres, all his own, nestled in a little corner of the Cummings Valley west of Tehachapi. Twenty-one years ago, this was the patch Brust chose for his ranch, Indian Point. “I came here to change my life,” Joel said. After selling his small business and spending some time working with legislators in Washington, D.C., Joel decided he was ready for a new phase, starting with the acquisition of a former 1940s cattle ranch. Like his choice of location, Joel carefully considered his ranching options. He researched various kinds of cattle but finally settled on a less popular animal: ostrich. According to Joel, ostrich are one of the most ecological animals to raise. Because the birds’ maintenance is so low, the effort
saved translates into a more economically-produced end product. Imagining ostrich products may be hard to do, but Joel has established an extensive line of ostrich goods. From oils and lotions to feather dusters to lowfat cuts of meat, Brust said he has instituted a processing formula which creates consistent products. Without bragging, Joel said this system is something he brought to the ostrich ranch industry. “Everyone was buying ostrich birds and selling them to each other,” Joel said, reflecting. “They had the hope of [a streamlined production system] happening.” By strictly breeding and selling the best of the bunch to each other, ostrich ranchers drove up the price of the birds without turning a real profit, according to Brust. Many ranches went out of business, he said, but he was able to keep a narrower goal in mind. “We focus on our products,” Joel said, attributing
the mantra to the ranch’s success. But, he said, “Many people come to us because of our [good] reputation for breeding.” With his well-earned reputation, Joel began expanding the distribution of his line of ostrich products, dubbed Blue Feather. Cus-
tomers can not only find the in-demand merchandise at the Indian Point gift shop, but also at Tehachapi retailers like On the Blvd. Bistro and Albertson’s. True to his track record, Joel is staying focused on his products; instead of limiting Blue Feather to the Tehachapi area, he offers See OSTRICH • Page 19

Ask the Doctor
Pseudogout is Gout's distant relative BY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D. CONTRIBUTING WRITER
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have pseudogout. It's hard for me to explain to people, so I either tell them I have gout or I don't tell them anything. Will you do me a favor and explain it in the paper? I'll cut it out, carry it with me and give it to people who ask what I have. Thanks. — D.K. ANSWER: "Pseudo" is the Greek word for "false." Pseudogout is false gout, an illness that looks a lot like gout but really isn't related to it. With gout, blood uricacid level rises. Crystals of uric acid deposit in joints and give rise to gout pain. With pseudogout, the crystals that invade joints and the tissues around joints are calcium pyrophosphate. What causes the rise of these crystals isn't
known. It's not diet. The first attack of gout usually involves the base of the big toe. With pseudogout, it's the knee. The pain of pseudogout is not false; it's quite real. Both crystals target other joints as time passes. Even though these two are different processes, treatment is similar. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used for acute attacks of both, medicines like Indocin and Motrin. Colchicine, another gout medicine, is also used for an acute, painful attack of pseudogout. As in gout, cortisone injection of an inflamed joint reliably suppresses joint pain.
The standard treatment of inflamed joints — ice packs and immobilization -- are part of treatment for both illnesses. Unlike gout, pseudogout doesn't have as many medicines for the prevention of attacks. Colchicine can be taken on a daily basis to ward off attacks. However, should this illness develop into a chronic illness, medicines like methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine are often prescribed. The booklet on gout and pseudogout provides answers to other questions on these illnesses. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 302W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. disease is as close to being 100 percent curable as any illness can be. Freezing it, drying it with an electric current, radiating it, applying Ffluorouracil cream and surgically removing it (including Mohs sur-

Hunting licenses, big game drawing applications now available The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced hunters may now apply online for the Big Game drawing and purchase 2013-2014 hunting licenses. Transactions may be conducted at any CDFW license sales office, license agent or online. All hunt tags for premium deer, elk, antelope and bighorn sheep are awarded through CDFW’s Big Game drawing. To qualify, the sales transaction must be completed before midnight on June 2. When completed, the customer will receive a receipt to show their hunt choices have been entered in the drawing. Mail-in applications will not be accepted. Begin-
ning June 21, hunters may contact a CDFW license sales office or look online to check the results. The following resources are available to assist hunters: • To find a license agent near you or to purchase items online, visit www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing. • To learn more about the Big Game drawing application process, view the 2013 California Hunting Digest (2013 Big Game) at www.dfg.ca.gov/publications/digest/. • To purchase a license and submit drawing applications by telephone, contact the license sales line at (800) 565-1458.
Fundraising Drawing Opportunities CDFW’s random draw fund-raising program includes tags for deer, elk, pronghorn antelope and a bighorn sheep. The bighorn sheep drawing is open to anyone 16 years of age or older as of July 1, 2013. The cost to enter the drawings is $5.97 per entry, per hunt. Applicants do not need a valid hunting license to apply, and may apply for the drawings as many times as they wish by June 2, 2013. Winners will be
required to purchase an annual hunting license. However, the tag will be issued at no additional cost.

Journey
Santa Barbara wine country, more than pinot noir BY MATTHEW MARTZ TEHACHAPI NEWS
Only three hours by car from Tehachapi, Santa Barbara and the adjoining Santa Ynez Valley offer the ideal destination for Southern California wine enthusiasts. Situated amongst the unpopulated rolling blond hills about 20 miles beyond downtown Santa Barbara, are massive estates with sprawling vineyards where world-class wines ripen on the vine. There are 114 vineyards producing 27 different varietals in all. But wine is only one facet of Santa Barbara’s wine county, where vineyards are nestled among working ranches, historic landmarks and trendy local haunts. The entire area provides the perfect place for a host of outdoor activities where visitors can tour a lavender farm or a miniature horse ranch, an ostrich or alpaca farm, go horseback riding, soar over the valley in a glider, or just relax. No matter what the reason for visiting, Santa Barbara’s wine county has it all. And a good place to start any
journey to the area, is in the charming historic town of Los Olivos, an artist colony whose early 20th century downtown with its art galleries, boutiques, wine stores and historic stagecoach stop housing, provides visitors with a rewarding and relaxing weekend getaway or fun-filled day. Named for the Spanish words for "the olives", Los Olivos is also the gateway to the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which stretches north from downtown, winding its way through over two dozen beautiful wineries and vineyards, each with its own tasting room. Each June the town celebrates its namesake fruit with the Olive and Jazz Festival. Just to the south of Los Olivos is the tourist town of Solvang, which was settled by Danish immigrants who reconstructed an entire Danish town, full of tacky souvenir shops, cuckoo clock shops, windmills and a half dozen wine tasting rooms. There are also several mouthwatering bakeries and restaurants, all serving up old world dishes and delicacies. Just outside Solvang, is a 125-

What are regs for scuba diving and abalone? Q&A from the Calif. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife BY CARRIE WILSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Question: Is there any regulation prohibiting a photographer with scuba gear from also scouting out large abalone for a regulationcompliant abalone diver to take? Thanks in advance, and for all you do. (Dave C.) Answer: The photographer in scuba cannot assist the free diver in any way. The action you describe falls within the definition of “take” under the Fish and Game Code and its regulations (see Fish and Game Code, section 86 and California Code of Regulations Title 14, section 1.80). Both the abalone

Hunter Ed and felons Question: My fatherin-law is interested in big game hunting. Unfortunately for him, he has a non-violent felony conviction which bars him
from possessing a firearm. This will allow him to only hunt via archery methods. Does he still have to take the standard hunter safety course or is there a special class for archery only? I have a feeling he has to take the standard course even though all the firearms questions will have no bearing on his archery tackle pursuit. If he does take and pass the
course, may he still hunt during the general deer season using a crossbow with me? I pride myself on knowing CDFW law well, but this wrinkle throws me for a loop. He is a great guy who just made a bad choice more than 12 years ago. Now that I married his step-daughter and am such an avid hunter, he wants to get in on the fun, but only as the law allows. (Anonymous) Answer: He will still have to take Hunter Ed, but he will have to find a class that does not use real firearms or have a live-fire requirement in the class. While signing up for the class or else at the very beginning of the class, your father-in-law should notify the instructor immediately of any firearms restrictions he may have. Then the instructor can determine how best to accommodate him dur-
ing the class. For a list of available hunter education classes in his area, please go to http://www.dfg.ca.gov/li censing/hunting/. Hunter Ed isn’t just about firearms. It includes all forms of hunting, hunter safety, conservation, ethics, etc. In most cases convicted felons are not restricted from using archery equipment or air rifles but he should check with his parole officer or the court to make sure the conditions of his case do not preclude using these methods of take for hunting.
Practicing spearfishing in rivers? Question: I know it is not legal to spear fish in rivers. However, if I want to take my spear to the river to practice my technique with no intention of taking any fish, am I abiding by the law? (Zoe
D., Trinidad) Answer: Spearfishing is permitted in some rivers, such as those in the Colorado River District and the Valley District (as authorized under CCR Title 14, section 2.30) but primarily only for a few species of non-game fish. New this year, spearfishing for stripers is now legal in the Valley District. Even if just practicing your techniques, don’t forget your fishing license! Otherwise, the use and possession of a spear within 100 yards of any canal, river, stream, lake or reservoir is specifically prohibited (CCR Title 14, section 2.09). CARRIE WILSON is a marine environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. While she cannot personally answer everyone’s questions, she will select a few to answer each week in this column. Please contact her at Cal.Outdoors@wildlife.ca.gov.

Home & Garden (Family Features)
No picnic or potluck is complete without potato salad. Whether it's served warm, cold, creamy, cheesy or with a splash of vinegar, the dish is a true American cookout classic. Potato salads are easy to make and even easier to pack full of flavor. Craft your own potato salad by cutting a delicious, Idaho(r) potato into cubes with the skins still on. Boil in water for about 8 to 15 minutes, then check for doneness by piercing a cube with a fork or skewer. If the fork goes through the potato with little resistance, drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add your favorite dressing and ingredients while the potatoes are still warm. Warm potatoes more easily absorb the delicious dressing. These decadent dishes are best eaten the day after they're made to give the flavors time to meld. When you're ready to serve your potato salad, keep it cold by placing your serving dish in a larger bowl filled with ice. Family meals are always better with delicious, flavorful potatoes. Always look for the "Grown in Idaho" seal to be sure you're buying genuine Idaho potatoes. For more recipes for salads and other potato dishes, visit www.IdahoPotato.com.
Potato Picnic Salad Yield: 6 to 7 servings For the Salad Dressing • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1 clove of garlic, chopped • 2/3 cup olive oil For the Salad • 3 pounds Idaho potatoes, about 7 medium • 1/2 pound cooked green beans • 12 cherry tomatoes • 2 hard boiled eggs, peeled • 1 cup cooked corn kernels • 1/4 cup minced celery, about 1 stalk • 1/4 cup pitted black olives • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped For salad dressing, combine vinegar, mustard, salt, pepper and garlic in a large salad bowl. Whisk in olive oil and set aside. For the salad, bring 2 quarts of water to a boil in large saucepan. Cook unpeeled potatoes in water for about 15 minutes until just fork tender. Drain potatoes and cool immediately under cold running water. While potatoes are cooling, cut green beans into 1-

inch pieces; halve cherry tomatoes and quarter eggs. Combine beans, tomatoes and eggs with cooked corn and celery in bowl with the salad dressing. Peel cooled potatoes, then cut into 2-inch pieces and toss with the dressing. Sprinkle salad with olives and chopped parsley just before serving.
Old Fashioned Hot German Potato Salad Yield: 6 servings • 4 medium Idaho potatoes • 2 bacon strips • 1 diced Spanish onion • 1/2 cup diced celery • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • 1/3 cup cider vinegar • 1 cup water Boil potatoes in skins and peel while hot. Slice potatoes thinly. In large skillet, fry bacon until crisp and remove from skillet. In bacon drippings, brown onion and celery. Stir in salt, sugar and cornstarch. Add vinegar and water. Stir in sliced potatoes; as sauce thickens while adding potatoes, more water may be needed. Transfer to serving dish and serve hot.
Potato and Pesto Chicken Salad Yield: 8 servings 2 pounds Idaho potatoes, well scrubbed (peeled, if desired) • 1 pound fresh green beans, washed and trimmed • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch cubes • 3/4 cup prepared pesto sauce • 3 to 6 cups mixed salad greens (optional) Over high heat, in a large, heavy pot with tight-fitting cover, bring half a pot of water to boil. Meanwhile, cut potatoes in half lengthwise, then cut crosswise in 1/2-inch slices. Add potatoes to boiling water, cover and return to boiling; cook 3 minutes.
Potato Picnic Salad Add green beans to pot with potatoes and cook another 4 minutes; drain potatoes and beans and set aside. (Vegetables should be firm.) In same pot, heat olive oil over high heat and cook chicken, stirring 6 to 8 minutes or until meat is completely cooked through. Remove from heat; stir in pesto sauce, then gently stir in potatoes and green beans, taking care not to break up vegetables. Serve salad warm or at room temperature on a bed of salad greens, if desired.
Loaded Baked Potato Salad Yield: 2 quarts • 4 pounds Idaho potatoes, peeled • 1 pound bacon, crisply cooked, and chopped into 1/2-inch pieces (fat reserved, if desired) • 4 ounces unsalted butter, softened • 1/2 cup chopped green onions • 2 cups grated or shredded cheddar cheese • 1 1/2 cups sour cream (regular or low-fat) • 1 tablespoon black pepper • 1 teaspoon salt Cook whole potatoes in boiling, unsalted water until tender. Refrigerate until chilled, then chop into 1-inch pieces. Transfer potatoes to a large bowl along with the remaining ingredients and thoroughly combine. Add some of reserved bacon fat if desired. Chill at least 2 hours before serving. Adjust seasoning prior to serving. Note: Any condiments or toppings typically added to a loaded baked potato may be used for this recipe. Practical Money Matters
Credit access for stay-at-home spouses and partners expanded BY JASON ALDERMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER
One of the pitfalls of Congress passing complicated, sweeping legislation is that sometimes provisions designed to protect one group unexpectedly create hardships for others. That's what happened with 2009's Credit Card Accountability Responsibility Disclosure (CARD) Act, which was hailed as legislation that would protect consumers from misleading credit practices. Among other things, the CARD Act requires that people under 21 must have an adult co-signer in order to open a credit account unless they can prove their ability to repay their account balance. This provision was designed to prevent young adults from assuming more debt than they can afford and then being unable to pay it off, thereby ruining their credit standing. So far, so good. Then, in 2011 the Federal Reserve finalized rules around the CARD Act's "ability to pay" provision. It stated that credit card issuers generally could only consider an applicant's independent income or assets before issuing a new card or increasing a credit limit, not his or her access to the household's overall income. An unintended consequence soon
emerged: As a result of the ability-topay rule, many spouses or partners over age 21 who don't work outside the home suddenly found they were unable to open separate credit accounts in their own name, regardless of whether or not they had access to their working spouse/partner's income. Establishing one's own credit history is crucial to gaining favorable interest See BE CAREFUL • Page 17

Pet and Rescue life needs a little joy. I know Jackson can add it for you! Call Have a Heart Humane Society at 661750-2261.
Angie
Affectionate Angie My name is Angie. I’m seven months young and a mastiff/pit mix. I’m the runt of the litter so I don’t think I’m going to get really big. Right now I am about 55 to 60 pounds. I am shy, but very affectionate and playful. When you pet me, I love to fall to the ground for a tummy rub. I’m still learning how to walk on a leash, and I’m getting better at it. I use the doggy door and there are no accidents in the house. I am the only one left from my litter and I need a forever loving home. For information on Angie and other available animals contact the Tehachapi Humane Society at 661-823-0699 or visit www.tehachapihumane.org
Jackson Action Jackson We call this adorable little boy Action Jackson because he is very playful and energetic. He always wants to be part of the action. Jack has a joy for life that I wish I could harness a little of. And he is also sweet and affectionate, climbing up to your shoulder to share a purr and a cuddle. He has very soft, silky fur and a beautiful long, plume tail that waves like a flag when he plays and runs. He is an indoor-only kitty and needs a home with at least one other cat to play with. Our Miss Hemingway is his best buddy, if you would like to take them as a pair. I know they would both love it. Jackson also needs cat towers, plenty of toys and nbsp; and scratchers to let him outlet his energy. Give us a call if your

Be careful to manage all credit Continued from Page 16
rates and access to credit, especially when non-working spouses get divorced or their spouse dies unexpectedly. Thus many consumers (and their Congressional representatives) were upset. Their displeasure reached the ears of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Fast forward to October 2012, when the CFPB released a proposal that was expected to ease credit rules for stayat-home spouses or partners. After six months of public review, the CFPB issued a formal amendment to the ability-to-pay rule that essentially says credit card applicants who are at least 21 can factor in a third party's income or assets when applying for credit card accounts if there's a reasonable expectation they'll be able to access those funds to make payments. (This includes income of a spouse or partner, although the rule applies to all applicants, regardless of marital status.) Speaking of unintended consequences, however, remember that even though having at least one credit card or loan in your own name can help you build a strong credit history, it's important to carefully manage all cred-
it accounts on which you're named – whether as an individual, cosigner or authorized user – to prevent damage to your credit score. Having a poor credit score can cost a small fortune over a lifetime. You'll pay higher rates and have a harder time qualifying for mortgages, car loans and credit cards. To maintain – or improve – your credit score: • Always pay all bills on time. • Never exceed credit limits. • Try to keep your credit utilization ratio (the percentage of available credit you're using) below 30 percent. • Don't automatically close older, unused accounts; 15 percent of your score is based on credit history. • Each time you open a new account there's a slight impact on your score, so avoid doing so in the months before a major purchase like a home or car. Bottom line: Make sure you have credit in your own name, in case you ever need to open a new account based on your own credit history. Just make sure you don't overextend yourself or mismanage credit you currently have. JASON ALDERMAN directs Visa's financial education programs. Ostrich ranch attracts visitors throughout year Continued from Page 4
his recipes to ranchers across state borders in exchange for his label on the product. He calls these fellow producers the Blue Feather Growers Network. While Joel works to expand Blue Feather offerings, his nephew, David Brust, heads the ranch’s operations with Christine Kelsey, general manager. Both are very knowledgable about ostrich, Indian Point and ostrich products. Near an ostrich pen,
David bent down to break off a flat, dry piece of dirtlike matter. Then he sniffed it. “I don’t do this on the regular tour,” he said. “But smell this.” The crumbling scrap was from days-old ostrich waste and had no scent. David explained how ostrich are very efficient digesters, making their waste less of a cleanliness hazard. “Ostrich don’t require a lot of work, in relation to cattle,” he said.
David continued to pepper out ostrich tidbits, his enthusiasm for the birds and his family’s ranch becoming evident. Christine, who has worked on the ranch for many years, praised the organic nature of ostrich products. She said the ostrich do not receive medication or steroids, making their products more “pure.” “There’s never been a case of E. Coli or Salmonella in ostrich products ever in the United States,” Chris-
tine said. Respected and soughtafter products aside, tourism is a big draw to Indian Point. Joel used to handle the tours, but Christine has primarily taken over for him. “They used to call me ‘The Ostrich Guy,’” he said with a laugh. “Now I guess she’s ‘The Ostrich Girl.’” Schools from every corner of Kern County pack buses with students and truck down the highway to see Joel’s large birds. Over
the years, once-small elementary students will return to the ranch to visit. “I’ve had kids come up and say, ‘Remember me?’” Christine said, beaming. The trio emphasized the importance of keeping the money from Indian Point local. “We use local artists and independent contractors for our jewelry and painted eggs,” David said, referring to the gift shop. “Our focus has been to create as many jobs as possible in the
Tehachapi area. It’s important that the money be spent here.” Despite traveling to expand Blue Feather, Joel said his passion stays at home. “My real heart is in putting my arms around a bird and putting him in a truck and going somewhere,” he said with a twinkle. “I hope to see the ranch stay in the family for generations. It would be a wonderful legacy.”
Business and Services Directory “Laws regulating the licensing of contractors are important protections for you, the customer. These laws require that licensed contractors demonstrate a high degree of competence and observe high standards of financial and professional responsibility. Before you consider hiring a contractor, ask for the license number . When you deal with unlicensed contractors you give away many protections you may need.”
