TEHACHAPI NEWS Lancaster’s Western Hotel Museum, once known as the Western Hotel, is the oldest structure in downtown Lancaster. The century-old historic structure recently underwent the first of a multiphase beautification process to restore the treasured facility to its original glory. Everything on the first level of the hotel, from the floors to the window trim, has been restored, and new additions to the museum's collection, relevant to the hotel and the region, have been incorporated in an exhibit space to highlight the hotel’s rich history. The facility was not always called the Western Hotel. The structure was constructed around 1888 on land owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad, however, when Louis Von Rockabrand, the first known owner of the hotel, took over ownership, it became known as the Antelope Valley Hotel. The hotel changed ownership a few of times in the following years and so did its name. Former names include the aforementioned Antelope Valley Hotel and the Gilwyn Hotel. It became the Western Hotel when George and Myrtie Webber took over ownership in 1885. Despite the changes in name, the Western Hotel, with its grand history, is one of the most visible links to Lancaster's heritage. Speculators, travelers, muleskinners and British lords are only a few examples of the various groups who used the hotel. In its early days, a stay at the hotel would set travelers back $1 per night. At the beginning of the 20th century, members of the Los Angeles-Owens River Aqueduct construction crew stayed at the hotel, making it a hub of social activity and commerce in the area. Some of Lancaster’s most historic residents spent time in the hotel including Maurice James Reynolds and his wife Jane Porter Reynolds, the namesake of the Lancaster's Jane Reynolds Park. The Western Hotel Museum was first constructed in 1888, and is a link to Lancaster's historic past. livan-Webber, continued to run the hotel until her death in 1978 at the age of 110. Webber Pool at Jane Reynolds Park was named in her honor. After Myrtie's death, the hotel fell into such disrepair that it was condemned, but was eventually rescued by the then newly-formed Western Hotel Historical Society, and reopened as a museum in 1988. The museum is now listed as a California Historic Landmark. Presently, the Western Hotel Museum highlights Lancaster’s historical past. Visitors can view the front parlor, dining room and a model hotel room on the first floor, as well as the backyard garden. Each room contains artifacts, pictures and signs with information about the hotel’s history. The current exhibit features two organs, a piano, original hotel artifacts, a map from the 1920s, a crank telephone, a stove and other items representative of the era. The model room on the first floor holds a bed, chest of drawers and a washstand including a chamber pot. In addition, there is a miniature scale model of the hotel in the dining room located just off the front parlor. The second floor, while currently closed, will be open to visitors as restoration efforts continue. The Western Hotel Museum, located at 557 West Lancaster Boulevard

Children’s acting class starts on Sept. 25 TEHACHAPI COMMUNITY THEATRE Tehachapi Community Theatre will hold a children’s acting class directed by Monica Nadon. Students will have a blast while learning the basics of acting for the theatre, which includes audition techniques, diaphragmatic breathing, stage fundamentals, theatre etiquette as well as fun improv games and more. The sixweek course will end with the students participating in a performance for family and friends. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, from 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at TCT’s Second Space located at 431 W. “J” St. (next to the Spirited Bead). The 2013-2014 second Friday Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series begins with “The Lives and Times of Billy Mitchell, an American Cowboy,” on Friday, September 13th, at 7:00pm The Mojave Desert, rich with cowboy and Indian legends, was settled by people who celebrated life, ranching, mining and cowboy ethics. Billy Mitchell, fourth generation of one of the founding families of Barstow, is a rancher, cowboy, father, grandfather, great grandfather and resident of Johnson Valley. He will relate his fascinating and compelling story about growing up in the Mojave Desert with his rancher grandfather and stories of his life as a rancher, rodeo rider
and cowboy. Hilary Sloane moved from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree in 2009. Having left a career as a photo stylist and film producer she picked up her camera and began to explore the Mojave desert. While photographing a calendar for Johnson Valley, she met Billy Mitchell and his family. A friendship has been established, and Billy and Hilary are now working together, with his stories and her photographs to bring awareness about the rich cowboy heritage in the High Desert. Q. How do I know when I need to re-pot my plants? A. Plants leave clues when it’s time to repot them or change out their potting soil. Watch for these common signs. You find yourself watering more and more and your plant is still in perpetual wilt. You see roots growing through the surface of the soil or out the bottom of the pot. When you ease the plant out of the pot there are large roots circling the outer circumference of the rootball. The plant is breaking its pot. The leaf edges are turning brown. The center of the plant is turning brown and/or dying. The plant is just too big for its pot (it’s losing its balance), or too big for the space in which you want to keep it. You can’t remember the last time you repotted. For most plants, the best time to repot is late winter/early spring when the days are starting to get longer, triggering new growth in your plant’s roots and leaves.
Q. What’s the difference between mulch and amendment? A. The biggest difference is how “the material� is used. An amendment is incorporated into the soil as a soil conditioner used to improve a soil’s texture, boost its nutrient content and make the soil more water retentive. An amendment is incorporated into the soil through digging or rototilling. Examples of amendments include compost, gypsum, lime, humus, etc. Mulching is the practice of applying organic or inorganic materials on the surface of the soil around the plants. Mulches help hold the moisture in the soil, and
they help insulate it from extreme or rapid changes of temperature. They help prevent weed seedlings from becoming established, help prevent erosion and water runoff, and make your garden beds look tidy. The garden bed should be weed free before applying mulches. Organic mulches can break down over time and enrich the soil. Examples of organic mulches include straw, shredded bark and leaves, compost, and pine needles. Inorganic mulches include stones, pot chards, and recycled rubber products. These do not break down over time nor do they improve the soil. Some materials can be amendments and mulches, such as compost. It just depends on how they are used.
A. Every garden needs pollinators, and without bees there would be limited flowers and even fewer vegetables. Bees are basically looking for two things when they visit your plants: nectar, which is the bee’s main source of energy, and pollen, which provides the balanced diet of proteins and fats. To help bees and other pollinator insects—like butterflies— you should provide a range of plants that will offer a succession of flowers, and thus pollen and nectar, through the whole growing season. Native plants are usually best for native bees, and can be used in both wild areas and gardens. There are also many garden plants—particularly

Ever notice how many people walk down the street completely engrossed in their smartphones and tablets? I fully expect to see one of them to walk into a light post one day. Although it's great having access to email, social networking and online shopping anywhere, anytime, such convenience comes with a certain amount of risk, according to Jennifer Fischer, Head of Americas Payment System Security, Visa Inc. "Unless you're hyper-vigilant about using secure networks and hack-proof passwords, someone sitting at the next table – or halfway around the world – could be watching your every move online and stealing valuable personal and financial information right off your device," says Fischer. "There are two primary potential dangers with Wi-Fi," notes Fischer. "The first is using an unsecured network – as many public hotspots are. With a little knowhow and the right tools, cybercriminals could easily eavesdrop on your online activity. "The second hazard is phony wireless networks that impersonate legitimate WiFi hot spots. You think you're logged onto a trusted network, but instead a cybercriminal has hijacked your session and can see all the private information you access or input." When using public Wi-Fi networks, always follow these safety precautions: • Change default settings on your laptop, smartphone or tablet to require that you must manually select a particular WiFi network, rather than automatically accepting the strongest available signal. • Avoid any network connections your device lists as "unsecured" (look for the "lock" icon). But if you must log on to a public network, avoid websites that require log-ins and passwords – e.g., bank accounts or email. • Ask for the exact name of the establishment's hot spot address – don't be fooled by lookalikes. • Only send personal data via Wi-Fi to encrypted websites (those whose addresses begin with "https" and display a lock icon). To be safe, you may want to avoid conducting financial transactions on public Wi-Fi altogether; instead, use your secure home network. • Consider using a third-party virtual private network (VPN) product to encrypt your Internet traffic.
• Regularly update virus and spyware protection software, make sure firewalls are on, and load operating system updates as soon as they become available, whether for your computer or smartphone. • Turn off Wi-Fi on your device when it's not in use. • Never leave a computer unattended while signed-in and always sign out completely at the end of a session. • Keep an eye out for "shoulder surfers" who watch as you type in your password. Finally, change passwords regularly and use different ones for each website you visit. Use a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols and avoid common words and phrases. Security experts recommend using at least 12 characters instead of the minimum eight characters commonly required. Cybercrime is a booming business. According to the 2012 Norton Cybercrime Report, its global price tag topped $388 billion last year, more than the global black market in marijuana, cocaine and heroin combined. It impacts individuals, small and large businesses and governments alike. On October 2, 2013, Visa Inc. is hosting its fifth Global Security Summit in Washington, D.C. "We're bringing together experts from the worlds of government, law enforcement, technology, finance, retail commerce and academia to explore how industry and government can collaborate to address cyber security," says Fischer. "Those interested in attending can register for free at visasecuritysummit.com." Being able to access the Internet anywhere anytime can be a great convenience and time-saver. Volunteer group Friends of Tehachapi Airport, the City of Tehachapi and Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District have partnered together to bring a day of fun to Tehachapi Municipal Airport. If you have lived in Tehachapi any time at all, you have occasionally heard or seen one of the wonderful World War II aircraft arriving or departing the airport. These aircraft have a distinctive sound and look that sets them apart. On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Tehachapi community will have the opportunity to get up close to approximately 10 such aircraft. The photos that accompany this article are examples of the type of aircraft that will be on display. The day begins with a 5K Run on the airport property and a 1-mile Kids Fun Run on the Tehachapi runway. You may contact TVRPD for registration information about the run. At 10 a.m., the aircraft will begin arriving. Following the arrival of all aircraft there will be the opportunity to walk around, take photos and ask questions of
the pilots for a couple of hours. Several of the aircraft will be doing flybys from 1 until 2 p.m. Along with the aircraft, there will be displays of various military vehicles and memorabilia from one of the pilots of the Doolittle Raiders. Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club will be selling food and Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District will have their beer garden available. With any event held, funds are an important part. Many of the aircraft will be flying some distance to take part in our fly-in; it is our desire to provide each aircraft with 100 gallons of fuel as a thank you. Our goal is to raise $7,500 to cover the cost of the fuel. We have received generous donations from businesses and individuals toward this goal and to date we have received approximately $4,000 in pledges. CERT announces a new class starting Sept. 16 Recent and current wildland fires in our area, along with the potential for earthquakes, remind us that we live in a potentially dangerous area year round. To survive disasters and recover we must always be prepared to react and recover correctly. The FEMA and Kern County Fire Department sponsored programs of Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) were established to help answer the need for immediate emergency help in disaster affected neighborhoods before professional first responders’ help can arrive. Our local CERT program has been a recognized part of the Tehachapi Valley since 2002. The highly experienced CERT instructors give basic training to citizen volunteers to help them and their families
first, and then come to help others after a disaster if professional first responder aid is delayed. The 20 hour training course over eight weeks covers personal and family disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, and emergency medical triage, among other items. This is truly a “neighbors helping neighbors” program that you and your family and friends should take part in. A new CERT training class is scheduled to start on Monday, Sept. 16 that 6:30 PM at the Bear Valley Springs Community Church. Don’t delay!
