Beers, brats and bands: Oktoberfest comes to Stallion, Kohnen’s

BY TECHACHAPI NEWS Beer-lovers looking for information about Oktoberfest in Tehachapi, here's what you've been waiting for: Main Street Tehachapi will not be sponsoring the September Oktoberfest of recent years. Instead, Kohnen's Country Bakery and Stallion Springs Recreation Department have events planned.

Kohnen's Oktoberfest Kohnen's Country Bakery is resuming its own celebration with Kohnen’s 10th Annual Oktoberfest Brews & Brats, to be held the first two Saturdays in October.

Enjoy bratwurst, German-brewed beer, and live German polka music from 2 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 12, in Kohnen's dining room.

Last year, owners Thomas and Colleen Kohnen celebrated at the Stallion Springs Oktoberfest with a group of friends.

“It was so nice to go to another local Okotberfest and not have to work it,” Colleen said.

Next year, she added, she plans to hold Kohnen’s celebration the last three weekends of October instead of overlapping with Stallion’s day.

“The first weekend will always be for Stallion,” she said.

The co-owner said this year’s event will be a little different from previous

years.

“This is a transition year for us as we take it from the street and move it indoors,” Colleen said.

“That’s why we are splitting it into two weekends.”

Stallion Springs Oktoberfest Local craft beer-makers are getting ready to show off their talent during the Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 5, from noon until 6 p.m. at the Stallion Springs Community Center, 27800 Stallion Springs Dr. Several delicious varieties of beer will be available: craft brewed or handselected by Stallion’s own brew master Steve Olson.

Two wine selections, an apple cider concoction and homemade root beer, cherry coke and crème soda, are offered for those who shy away from an ice-cold pint.

The Stallion Springs event is open to area residents and visitors. Guests can choose from a variety kid-friendly activities like a

jump house and petting zoo, food, beer, wine, live music and more. Although

admission is free, some activities and commodities require purchasing.

There will also be kids crafts, refreshments, displays of fire fighting equipment, and at 6:30 p.m., the Kern County Fire Department will visit with a fire engine.

“Ghoulies” will also make an appearance, with artist Christi Friesen demonstrating how to make the glow-in-the-dark ghoules. A long-time Tehachapi resident, Christi Friesen teaches polymer clay art around the world and has written a number of books on the subject.

Fingerstyle guitar virtuoso Chris Proctor will be in concert at Fiddlers Crossing on Oct. 6 Chris Proctor will return to Tehachapi for a matinee performance in Fiddlers Crossing on Sunday, Oct. 6. at 3 p.m., doors open at 2:30 p.m.

Proctor is a national champion in fingerstyle guitar, blending elements of jazz, Celtic, old-time, pop, and classical music with a dash of blues thrown in for good measure.

In his concerts, he ranges from his own compositions to traditional tunes and covers of such pop standards as “Knights in White Satin” and “Paint it Black.” He somehow makes his single six- or 12string guitar sound like a full orchestra.

The Tehachapi Performing Arts Center Foundation invites members of the community and supporters of the arts to attend its first TPAC fundraiser.

This event will help to raise much needed funds

in order for TPAC to continue its mission of building a state-of-the-art performing arts center and museum facility in the greater Tehachapi area. It will help us continue our mission of providing awareness for the need of a performing arts center and completing the

tasks required to obtain proper permitting in preparation for the building of the center.

The event, which will take place on Friday, Oct. 11, from 5:30 until 9 p.m. at Jennifer’s Terrace, 413 S. Curry St., will include a catered dinner, artistic

performances by local groups and a silent auction featuring art and crafted items.

• 1 package (16 ounces) Johnsonville Ground Italian Sausage (Mild, Sweet or Hot) • 1 pound ground beef • 1 medium onion, chopped • 3 celery ribs, chopped • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 3 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes with green peppers and onions • 2 cans (16 ounces each) kidney beans, rinsed and drained • 1 can (14.5 ounces) beef broth • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 tablespoons chili powder

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1/2 crushed red pepper flakes • Cheddar cheese, shredded (optional) In large saucepan, cook sausage and ground beef over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add onion, celery and garlic. Cook and stir for 5 minutes or until tender. Stir in tomatoes, beans, broth, tomato paste, brown sugar, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, cumin and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

Sprinkle with cheese if you like and serve immediately.

Easy sausage pizza Yield: 6 servings

• 8 ounces Johnsonville Ground Italian Sausage (Mild, Sweet or Hot) or 8 ounces Johnsonville Italian Sausage Links • 1 cup pizza sauce • 1 pre-baked packaged pizza crust (12-inch) • 1 1/4 shredded mozzarella cheese, divided • 1/2 cup green pepper, chopped • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, optional

If using ground sausage, pinch sausage into dime-size pieces. If using links, remove casings and also pinch into dimesize pieces. Spread sauce over crust; sprinkle with 1 cup cheese. Add Italian Sausage pieces and green pepper. Top with remaining cheese. Bake according to crust package directions or until sausage is no longer pink (160∞F) and cheese is melted.

For finishing touch, drizzle with olive oil before cutting, if desired.

Italian meatballs Yield: 6 servings

1 egg, lightly beaten • 1/3 cup dry bread crumbs • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1/4 cup milk • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped • 1 package (16 ounces) Johnsonville Mild Ground Italian Sausage or 1 package (19 ounces) Johnsonville Italian Sausage Links Preheat oven to 350∞F. In a large bowl, combine the egg, bread crumbs, cheese, milk and onion.

If using sausage links, remove from casings.

Add sausage to bread crumb mixture and mix well. Shape into 20 meatballs; arrange on shallow baking pan.

Bake for 20 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through (160∞F).

Serve with favorite sauce and spaghetti.

Italian sausage rigatoni Yield: 6 servings

Easy Sausage Pizza

for chilly evenings

•1 package (19 ounces) Johnsonville Mild Italian Sausage Links,

Italian Sausage Rigatoni grilled • 1 pound rigatoni pasta • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 large sweet red pepper, chopped • 1 jar (26 ounces) pasta sauce of your preference • 2 tablespoons Italian parsley, chopped Cook sausage links according to package directions. Meanwhile, cook rigatoni according to package directions; drain and set aside. In a large skillet, heat olive oil until hot. Add garlic; sautÈ for 30 seconds or until golden. Add red peppers; sautÈ for 2 minutes or until crisp-tender. Cut sausage into 1/4-inch coin slices; add to skillet. Stir in pasta sauce; heat through.

Add pasta; toss to combine. Sprinkle with parsley. Serve immediately.

Italian all natural groundsausage lasagna Yield: 12 servings

• 12 lasagna noodles, uncooked • 1 package (16 ounces) Johnsonville Italian All Natural Ground Sausage • 1 medium onion, chopped • 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped

• 1 large container chunky pasta sauce • 1 container (15 ounces) ricotta cheese • 1 egg • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated • 3 cups fresh spinach, chopped and packed • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded Prepare noodles according to package directions; drain and set aside. SautÈ Italian sausage, onion and garlic in a skillet until sausage is browned; drain. Add pasta sauce to the sausage mixture and set aside. In a medium bowl, blend ricotta cheese, egg and 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese and set aside. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray and spread 1 cup of the sauce mixture on the bottom. Top with 3 lasagna noodles.

Spread 1/4 cup of the ricotta cheese mixture on the noodles and layer on 1 cup of the sauce mixture. Sprinkle 1 cup of spinach and 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese.

Repeat this whole process 3 more times starting with the noodles; top with 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese to finish. Bake uncovered in 350∞F oven for 45 minutes until hot and bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.

AVRCD new conservation garden is open The Antelope Valley Resource Conservation District (AVRCD) would like to announce that the design for the new conservation garden is complete and work has started at the AVRCD site. Fall! It's time to plant

Yippeee! Fall is finally here! It was so hot this summer that gardening was hardly any fun at all.

If you’ve been waiting to install a new landscape or spruce up your old one now is the time to get it done. Make a list, head to the nursery, shop until you drop, and then return home to turn your yard into a paradise.

October is a great month to plant.

Many kinds of bulbs, flowers, herbs, shrubs, trees, vegetables and lawns perform better when planted in the fall rather than the spring.

Why is fall planting better than spring?

Well it is not that it is better, but it is easier to get plants to establish in a landscape. Less work and less water are needed and the success is more visibly rewarding. Because days are becoming shorter and average temperatures are dropping the plant does not need to spend all of its energy trying to cool off. Instead the energy goes to promote growth, especially root growth. Planting in fall allows plants to develop a stronger root system and become well-established in the ground over the winter months. They will be ready to grow next spring and they will perform better through the

summer heat. And if you're lucky, the winter rains will provide most of the watering for you!

season annuals like impatiens, marigolds, vinca (Madagascar periwinkle), and zinnia, etc., since their flowering season is drawing to a close.

Herbaceous Perennials – These plants flower once or twice a year and live for several years. Some die back in winter and push new growth in spring. Be careful with spacing perennials, many people make the mistake of crowding them together.

They will be with you for years and sometimes do not reach their full size in the first year. The selection of perennials is overwhelming.

Autumn planting helps to make gardening easier

Continued from page 12 There are oodles of sizes, shapes, textures, and flower colors to choose from. Nurseries are brimming with the “tried and true” and showcasing new varieties all the time.

CA Native Plants – Many people think that drought tolerant natives are hard to grow because they plant them in spring and then over water them in summer.

Native plants are acclimated to our dry summers and often times their roots rot when watered too heavily in summer. By planting in the fall your success rate with drought tolerant natives is guaranteed to rise. There are many asters, ceanothus, columbines, coral bells, penstemons, salvias, and ornamental grasses that will thrive in our landscapes.

Shrubs and Trees – Most landscape trees and shrubs are best planted in fall. If you want to plant deciduous landscape trees with fall color, then shop for them, while their leaves are turning, so that you pick a good specimen. Be sure to dig the hole at least twice as wide as the rootball and only as deep. Plant a little high to make sure that water drains away from the trunk. Fruit trees can be planted bare root in the dead of winter.

Lawns – Now is a good time sod or seed new fescue lawns and patch existing ones.

Vegetables and Herbs – It is time to plant cool season vegetables, like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, onions, beets, rutabaga, spinach, and turnips.

Many herbs are perennials like chives, lavender, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage and thyme and benefit from a fall planting. Now is not the time to seed or transplant basil, but you can seed cilantro and parsley for a late fall crop. You can even seed wild flowers and poppies right where you want them to grow.

Calico Ghost Town: Stroll down the streets of an actual 'Boom Town'

Whether taking a break on the way to Las Vegas, or simply traipsing around in the eastern Mojave Desert, a visit to Calico Ghost Town can provide hours of entertainment and education for the whole family.

Located about an hour and a half east of Tehachapi, just north of Yermo off Interstate 15, Calico was once an actual California boom town. Established at the height of the California silver rush in 1881, the town served miners working the more than 500 area mines of California's largest silver strike. But by the turn of the 20th Century, declining silver prices and playedout mines saw the population dwindle, and like so many boom towns, Calico went bust.

In 1951, Knott's Berry Farm founder Walter Knott and his wife Cordelia purchased the abandoned town and began restoring the dilapidated buildings to their 1880s condition. Referencing period photos and the memories of former residents, the Knotts rebuilt the ghost town and in 1966, they donated it to San Bernardino County, making the town a county regional park.

Today, Calico Ghost Town is a state historical landmark and offers a variety of activities for visitors. As guests stroll down Calico's stereotypically-western Main Street, they can shop for souvenirs in the General Store, have a vintage portrait taken at the town photo studio or enjoy a cool drink at Lil's Saloon, one of the original 1880s build-

ings. There is also a museum, a mystery shack where the usual laws of gravity get twisted in entertaining ways, a schoolhouse, and a house constructed from empty bottles. While building materials could sometimes be hard to come by, mining boom towns such as Calico seemed to have almost endless supplies of empty bottles coming from the many saloons, which the occasional enterprising settler might put to good use.

The stores and restaurants are all decorated in period style, and costumed workers and entertainers also add to the ambiance, and "gunfights" regularly breakout in the street, harkening back to the wild days of the town's past.

Calico owed its early existence to mining, and there are still a number of mining-related actives in which today's visitors can take part. The Maggie Mine

was one of the area's original working mines, and guests can take a self-guided tours of the old mine and learn about the process of silver mining.

There is also a recreation of an assayer's office, with exhibits showing how the silver was extracted form the ore.

Intrepid, would-be miners can even try their hand at panning for "fool's gold," and the Calico-Odessa Railway gives guests the opportunity to take in the scenery from the type of train that was used to cart silver ore out of the mines.

Calico Ghost Town is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., except for Christmas Day, and general admission to the town is $8 for adults and $5 for children 6-15.

Minimal additional fees are applied to some of the town's attractions. Camping and cabin/bunkhouse rentals are available, as well, and certain buildings in the park are available for special events.

Important safety advice in advance of the Oct. 17 ‘Great ShakeOut’ The ability to survive and recover from a major earthquake will depend on the amount of planning each Californian does in advance— would you know how to contact a loved one after the next quake strikes?

Plan to be safe (Step Two of the “Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety”) by communicating with your family and neighbors now about what to do during and immediately following an earthquake. “The Great ShakeOut,” scheduled for October 17 at 10:17 a.m. provides an opportunity to review essential plans and preparations, which should be a part of everyone’s life in earthquake country.

The Great ShakeOut is four weeks away and 8.3 million Californians and have already registered atwww.ShakeOut.org to practice the annual “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill.

Plan to be safe by creating a disaster plan and deciding how you will communicate in an emergency. FEMA and the American Red Cross offer great suggestions for planning for disasters. Here are aspects to consider when planning for earthquakes: • Identify safe spots in

every room, such as under sturdy desks or tables, or on the ground next to an interior wall away from windows and things that may fall.

• Earthquakes can start fires, so store a fire extinguisher where it can be easily accessed, and learn how to use it (P.A.S.S. - Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).

• People often cut their feet during or after earthquakes when they get out of bed and walk barefoot on broken glass or other fallen objects. To keep shoes and a flashlight within reach, put them in a bag and tie it to your bed frame or headboard.

• Access to making long distance phone calls is usually restored first.

Choose someone who lives out of the area for everyone in your family to report their status, then learn how to Text First, Talk Second from ShakeOut partner Safe America Foundation.

• If you are a person with a disability or need extra help, include your personal support network in your plan and visit EarthquakeCountry.org/disability for a variety of resources.

• Find out if you live, work or play in a tsunami zone and make sure everyone knows how to get to higher ground if necessary.

Seniors: be on high alert for scams

I look forward to the day when we no longer need to warn senior citizens about scams designed to separate them from their hardearned money. I'm not holding my breath, however.

According to the FBI, senior citizens make attractive targets for con artists for a variety of reasons: • They're more likely to have a nest egg, own their home and have good credit.

• Seniors are less likely to report fraud because they don't know where to report it, don't realize they've been scammed, or are too ashamed at having been duped – possibly fearing they won't be trusted to manage their own finances

going forward.

• When elderly victims do report crimes, they often make poor witnesses because of faulty memory.

• Seniors are more susceptible to products promising increased wealth, cognitive function, virility, physical conditioning, anti-cancer properties and so on.

Here's a roundup of common telemarketing scams targeting seniors and how you can avoid them: Be wary, even if callers appear legitimate. Caller ID "spoofers" pretending to represent your bank, credit card company or government agencies may try to trick you into revealing personal information under the pretext of fixing a security breach. When in doubt,

hang up and contact the organization yourself.

Other common telemarketing scams include: • You've supposedly won a free prize but are asked to pay for handling, postage or taxes. By law, you never have to pay for any legitimate prize.

• Get-rich-quick schemes, like those involving Nigerian princes trying to smuggle funds out of their country using your bank account in exchange for a cut of the amount.

• The "Grandparent Scam," where someone pretending to be your grandchild calls in a panic, claiming to have been arrested or injured (often abroad) and asking you to wire them money – and not tell their

parents because they're embarrassed.

• Soliciting funds for fake charities, especially after natural disasters.

• Companies offering seniors free medical equipment or services. After you provide your Medicare number, they forge a doctor's signature and bill Medicare for unneeded goods or services you never actually receive.

• Some particularly brazen thieves will even offer to help you recover money you've lost to other scammers (who are often part of the same operation).

Although direct telephone contact is common, scammers also use mailers, email, texts and advertisements to lure potential victims into contacting them for further

information. A few tip-offs these offers – whatever the channel – might be bogus: • The offer sounds too good to be true.

• High-pressure sales tactics – they won't take no for an answer have sensiblesounding answers for your every question or hesitation.

• You must make a decision "right now" because the offer will expire soon.

• Claims that you are one of just a few people eligible for the offer.

• Your credit card number is requested for verification.

Never provide credit card or other personal information by phone, letter or email unless you made the initial contact.

• You are urged to provide money quickly and not given

time to consider the offer.

• There is no risk. All investments have some risk, except for U.S. Government obligations.

• They refuse to provide detailed written information.

• You are asked to trust the telemarketer. Like your mother always said, "Don't trust strangers."

The Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov) has a Scam Alert Blog that exposes the latest scams, as well as a site where you can file a complaint if a business doesn't make good on its promises or cheats you out of your money.
