Long-time residents of Tehachapi may remember when local apples were a more prevalent sight and commodity. David Brust does. “I thought we needed an event to remind people,” Brust said. So he organized the Tehachapi Apple Festival set for Oct. 12. “The genesis of the festival was [based on] an idea I came up with after visiting the Apple Shed and seeing the little apple orchards,” Brust said. Fruit packing sheds once lined Tehachapi Boulevard, shipping product around the world and attracting visitors. “Families from all over would come [to Tehachapi] to pick apples,” Brust said. Although the Apple Festival will not consist of picking apples from trees, it will be dominated by an apple theme. “It’s really an ode to what Tehachapi used to be,” Brust said. Unlike the Mountain Festival, which draws thousands of people, Brust said the Apple Festival will be more low-key. “Not that Mountain Festival isn’t a great event,” he said. “But we want
people to have a feel for small-town America [through this event]. We want it to have a small-town homey feeling.” Proceeds from the Apple Festival will benefit the Make A Wish Foundation, Lions Clubs International and Tehachapi Boy Scout Troop 3. Admission to the event is free, but Brust said funds from vendor booth rentals and beverage sales will go to the charities. Additionally, Make A Wish will sell apples donated to them by Murray Family Farms and the Boy Scouts will offer carnival games for a nominal fee. The Lions Club will hold an “apple drop” in which numbered rubber
balls will be dropped in a bunch from a crane onto a bulls eye on Robinson Street. The number from the “apple” closest to the bullseye will win its ticket-holder a prize. The Apple Festival will be in Railroad Park on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Fiddlers Crossing will be true to its name when it presents the guitar and fiddle duo of Tim and Myles Thompson at St. Jude’s Anglican Church on Friday, Oct. 18. Acclaimed in their home town of Nashville, and increasingly throughout the world, this fatherson band expands the boundaries of guitar and fiddle music, crossing improvisational jazz and traditional folk with country, rock and world music to create music that defies any one genre designation. Both are singers and songwriters, as well as masterful instrumentalists. Their concerts are a highoctane blend of instrumental and vocal duets, including improvised originals and classics that show the influences of such legends as Chet Atkins, Stephan Grappelli, Chick Corea and Jackson Browne. Tim Thompson is a champion finger style guitarist in his own right who has provided music for NPR and films. Just 19 years old, son Myles is already making

Fans of their live shows are frequently dazzled by the often other-worldly, synchronized unity of their music and voices. But,

BY LANCASTER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Considered one of the best “jukebox musicals” of our time, “Ring of Fire The Life and Music of Johnny Cash,” will take the stage at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3 and 8 p.m. A company of performers will lead you through the life of legendary country artist Johnny Cash, from the cotton fields of Arkansas to the Grand Ole Opry, with more than 35 of his greatest hits
including: “I Walk the Line,” “Jackson,” “If I Were a Carpenter,” “I’ve Been Everywhere,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “A Boy Named Sue,” his final hit, “Daddy Sang Bass,” and the title track “Ring of Fire.” Created by Richard Maltby, Jr., and conceived by William Meade, with orchestrations by Steven Bishop and Jeff Lisenby, “Ring of Fire - The Life and Music of Johnny Cash,” was originally produced on Broadway and performed
at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. In developing the creative vision for the show, Maltby and Meade felt that the audience experience should culminate in the feeling that they have spent the evening in the presence of an extraordinary and real man. Maltby states, “If, watching this show, you feel you are being drawn back to your roots, it’s not accidental. I hope, as we bring to life these wonderful songs, we will touch your heart, mind and soul as well, and

common culinary oils. Try this fresh, healthy update on 1930s Pineapple Upside Down Cake, originally invented to take advantage of canned pineapple, which is kept moist and gooey with canola oil. Take a journey back to the '40s with Chocolate War Cake, a chocolaty indulgence that's a cinch to make. Or dig into Frozen Grasshopper Pie, a '50s favorite once home freezers became common, which offers less saturated fat by using canola oil in the crust and reduced-fat ice cream or frozen yogurt in the filling. For the complete "Decades of Decadence" collection and more recipes from Krieger, visit www.CanolaInfo.org.
1930s Pineapple Upside Down Cake Yield: 8 servings Serving size: 1 slice
(Family Features) Each decade has its own distinct foods, including desserts. Yet some of these decadent treats - such as southern Lemon Chess Pie from the 1820s, Strawberry Shortcake from the 1850s, or New York's Black and White Cookies, first baked up in the Roaring 1920s - have stood the test of time. To celebrate these nostalgic sweets, CanolaInfo's "Decades of Decadence" recipe collection serves up a delicious trip down memory lane with modern influence by Ellie Krieger, M.S., R.D., host of the Cooking Channel's "Healthy Appetite." "History shaped these desserts and they have stuck around because they are inherently delicious," she says. "They were driven by the availability of ingredients in their day, advertising by food companies in women's magazines and advancements in food technology or appliances." To boost nutrition and keep saturated fat in check, the recipes are updated with heart-healthy ingredients, such as low-fat yogurt, whole-grain flour and canola oil, which has the least saturated fat and most omega-3 fat of all
• Canola oil cooking spray • 1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar • 4 to 5 pineapple rings (about 1/4 of whole pineapple) about 1/2 inch thick • 2 tablespoon chopped crystallized ginger • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour • 3/4 cup granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 cup low-fat buttermilk • 1/2 cup canola oil • 2 large eggs • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Preheat oven to 350°F. Generously spray bottom of 9-inch, nonstick layer cake pan with canola oil cooking spray. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar, then arrange pineapple rings on top in one layer. Sprinkle chopped ginger pieces in spaces around pineapple rings and in their centers. In medium bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, sugar, baking powder and baking soda. In another medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, canola oil, eggs and vanilla. Mix wet and dry ingredients until combined. Pour batter over pineapple-brown sugar mixture and bake until top is lightly browned and wooden skewer inserted into center of cake comes out clean, 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes, then run knife around cake edges and, using oven mitts, invert cake onto large serving plate. Note: Whole-wheat, all-purpose flour can be substituted for whole-wheat pastry flour. 1940s Chocolate War Cake Yield: 12 slices Serving size: 1 slice
• 3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 1 cup granulated sugar • 1/3 cup natural cocoa powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup cold water • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar • 1/3 cup canola oil • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon confectioners' sugar Preheat oven to 350∞F. In 9-inch round baking pan, whisk together whole-wheat pastry flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. In small bowl or measuring cup, combine water and vinegar. Make well in center of flour mixture in pan and pour canola oil and vanilla extract into well. Pour water-vinegar mixture over top of flour and then stir well to blend all ingredients. Bake until set and toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 30 to 35 minutes. Place cake on rack to cool in pan. Once cool, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. 1950s Frozen Grasshopper Pie Yield: 8 servings Serving size: 1 slice
• Canola oil cooking spray • 1 1/4 cups finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies or chocolate graham cracker crumbs • 3 tablespoons canola oil • 4 cups mint chip reduced-fat ice cream or frozen yogurt, softened 1/3 cup chocolate shavings Preheat oven to 350∞F. Spray 9-inch pie dish with canola oil cooking spray. In medium bowl, mix cookie crumbs and canola oil until combined, then press mixture into prepared pie dish. Bake until fragrant, 6 to 8 minutes. Allow to cool completely. In large bowl, place softened ice cream and mix well until uniform texture forms, similar to soft-serve ice cream. Fill cooled pie crust with ice cream, smoothing out top. Garnish with chocolate shavings, cover with plastic wrap and put back in freezer until solidly frozen, at least 4 hours. When ready to serve, heat knife under hot water and use it to cut pie into slices. Note: An ice cream or frozen yogurt without green food coloring is recommended. To make chocolate shavings, use a vegetable peeler to peel strips from a thick block of chocolate. If the chocolate crumbles as you make the shavings, put it in the microwave at 10-second intervals to soften it slightly. Practical Money Matters
Lower income? Don't pass up the Saver's Credit BY JASON ALDERMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER
In 2002, Congress passed legislation to create an income tax credit designed to encourage lower- and middle-income people to save money for retirement. The saver's credit, worth up to $1,000 a year for individuals ($2,000 for couples filing jointly), rewards people for contributing to an IRA or 401(k) plan. Regrettably, the people most likely to benefit from the saver's credit are also those who can usually least afford to set aside money for retirement. It doesn't help that only one-quarter of people earning less than $50,000 even know the credit exists. But if you can squeeze a few dollars out of your budget, the saver's credit is worth pursuing. Tax credits reduce the amount of income tax paid, dollar for dollar; so many low-income people can recoup the amount they contribute to retirement accounts by up to 50 percent through reduced taxes. And those whose employers match a portion of their 401(k) contributions reap even bigger rewards. Another good selling point: Parents or grandparents who want to jumpstart their low-income kids' retirement savings can fund their IRA or 401(k) contribution, thereby making them eligible for the saver's credit even if they can't afford to contribute on their own. Here's the nitty-gritty on the saver's credit: The saver's credit is a "nonrefundable"tax credit, which means it reduces income taxes owed, dollar for dollar – although it won't generate a tax refund if the credit is more than the taxes you owe. The saver's credit helps offset part of the amount you voluntarily contribute to an IRA or 401(k) plan. Your credit amount is based on your tax filing status, adjusted gross income and the amount you contribute to qualifying retirement programs. It can be claimed by: • Married couples filing jointly with adjusted gross income (AGI) of no more than $59,000. • Heads of households with AGI up to $44,250. • Singles (or married fil-
ing separately) with AGI up to $29,500. The credit rate is 10 percent, 20 percent or 50 percent of the first $2,000 you contribute ($4,000 for married couples filing jointly), depending on your AGI; the lower your AGI the higher the percentage. For example: • Single filers with an AGI up to $17,500 receive a 50 percent credit on the first $2,000 they contribute (i.e., up to a $1,000 credit); 20 percent on AGI up to $19,250 ($200 credit); and 10 percent on AGI up to $29,500 ($100 credit). Anything over $29,500, you don't qualify. • For joint filers the credit amount limits are: 50 percent on up to $35,500 AGI (50% X $4,000 = $2,000); 20 percent on up to $38,500 ($800); and 10 percent on up to $59,000 ($400).
Other eligibility rules: • You must be at least age 18. • You can't be claimed as a dependent on someone
else's return. • You can't have been a full-time student during any part of five calendar months in 2013. • You must contribute to a 401(k) by December 31, 2013, or to an IRA by April 15, 2014. Important Note: You cannot claim the credit using IRS Form 1040 EZ, the form many lowerincome people file. To claim it, you must submit IRS Form 8880 with Form 1040, 1040A or 1040NR. It's a little extra bookkeeping, but could be worth the effort. Saving money for the future is never easy, especially when you're struggling to pay daily bills. But if you can somehow manage to take advantage of the saver's credit now, you'll thank yourself at retirement. Jason Alderman directs Visa's financial education programs. Protect your Winter Landscape from Hungry Wildlife BY
MELINDA MYERS
GARDENING EXPERT
There’s no doubt that managing critters in the landscape can be a challenge especially as food supplies start to dwindle. If you are battling with rabbits, deer, groundhogs or other wildlife, don't let down your guard as the growing season begins to wind down. Be proactive. Start before they get into the habit of dining on your landscape. It is easier to keep them away than break the dining habit. Fence them out. Fencing is the best defense against most wildlife. A four feet tall fence around a small garden will keep out rabbits. Secure the bottom tight to the ground or bury it several inches to prevent rabbits and voles from crawling underneath. Or fold the bottom of the fence outward, making sure it’s tight to the ground. Animals tend not to

It’s apple picking time
Fencing out the furry friends Continued from page 14 secure. Many hungry animals have found their way into the garden through openings around and under the gate. A five foot fence around small garden areas can help safeguard your plantings against hungry deer. Some gardeners report success surrounding their garden with fishing line mounted on posts at one and three foot heights. Break out the repellents. Homemade and commercial repellents can be used. Apply before the animals start feeding and reapply as directed. Consider using a natural product like Messina’s Animal Stopper (www.Messinas.com). It is made of herbs, safe to use and smells good. Scare ‘em away. Blow up owls, clanging pans, rubber snakes, slivers of deodorant soap, handfuls of human hair and noise makers are scare tactics that have been used by gardeners for years. Consider your environment when selecting a tactic. Urban animals are used to the sound and smell of people. Alternate scare tactics for more effective control. The animals won't be afraid of a snake that hasn't moved in weeks.
Combine tactics. Use a mix of fencing, scare tactics and repellents. Keep monitoring for damage. If there are enough animals and they are hungry, they will eat just about anything. Don’t forget about nature. Welcome hawks and fox into your landscape. Using less pesticides and tolerating some critters, their food source, will encourage them to visit your yard. These natural pest controllers help keep the garden-munching critters under control. And most importantly, don't give up. A bit of persistence, variety and adaptability is the key to success. Investing some time now will not only deter existing critters from dining in your landscape, but will also reduce the risk of animals moving in next season. Gardening expert, TV/radio host, author & columnist Melinda Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Can’t Miss Small Space Gardening. She hosts The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything” DVD series and the nationally syndicated Melinda’s Garden Moment segments. Myers is also a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine. Myers’ web site, melindamyers.com, offers gardening videos, podcasts, and garden tips.
