planned at Beekay Theatre

BY TEHACHAPI NEWS The Beekay Theatre, 110 S. Green St., will deck out in Halloween decor Saturday, Oct. 26, and roll out the carpet for a Bakersfield-based puppet theatre Sunday, Oct. 27. The Beekay Theatre will again be transformed into the Bookay Theatre. The Tehachapi Pops Orchestra, together with the Tehachapi Community Theatre, will offer musical tricks and treats in two hour-long performances, at 4 and 7 p.m. Guests and performers will don costumes to add to the festive atmosphere. Musical selections include highlights from “Wicked,” “Phantom of the Opera” and “Harry Potter,” as well as TV themes from “Alfred

Hitchcock,” “The Munsters” and other spooky favorites. The orchestra will be conducted by Daniel Musquez. The Bookay is a fundraiser for both TPOPS and TCT. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, and are available from Mountain Music, 206 E. “F” St., Tehachapi Treasure Trove, 116 E. Tehachapi Blvd., any member of the orchestra, or TCTonstage.com. The spine-chilling weekend continues on Sunday with Omnipresent Puppet Theatre’s performance of “Frankenstein’s Baby.” In “Frankenstein’s Baby,” Dr. Frankenstein is called away to a medical conference and leaves the Monster to babysit his child for the weekend. The Monster, not confident that

he can handle it alone, enlists the help of the Wolfman, and they take the baby on a midnight picnic at the local cemetery. Their plans are threatened by the evil vampire, Drusilla, who is out to kidnap the baby to force Dr. Frankenstein into helping her take over the world with her dreaded Cauldron of Doom. There are many hijinks, shape changes and movie monsters. The show is intended not to be scary and is appropriate for children pre-school age and older. Show times are 1 and 4 p.m., and each lasts about 40 minutes. Tickets cost $6 and can be purchased online at TCTonstage.com, or at the Beekay’s box office.

Main Street’s Trunk or Treat is on Halloween, Oct. 31 BY CHARLES WHITE CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Trunk or Treat, held on Halloween in Downtown Tehachapi, has become an annual event for families in the Tehachapi area looking for a safe environment to show off their costumes. On Thursday, Oct. 31, 5 until 7 p.m., the family event for the Tehachapi Community will be held along Robinson Street and in the parking lot next to City Hall. New this year is an oldfashioned Halloween Carnival will be held in Centennial Plaza. Hot dogs and other treats, as well as fun carnival games, will be available for tickets that will be sold

at the carnival. There will be hot dogs and other treats as well as games with prizes for kids. Everything — games and food — will be priced at $1 or less each to make the family event affordable for all. Every year there are some outstanding costumes; those wearing unique, creative and cute costumes will be given prizes by a group of “undercover” judges roaming throughout the crowd. There will be a car-decorating contest for those giving out candy from their trunks. To register your vehicle and get details on how to participate, go to the Main Street website, MainStreetTehachapi.org

and click on the “Events” button. Many families participate each year and it takes a lot of candy to satisfy the monsters, zombies, super heroes, and princesses of Tehachapi. Candy donations (bags of individually wrapped treats, please) can be dropped off at several locations around town, including Hungry Howie’s, 675 Tucker Road, Downtown Yogurt Junction, 117 E. “F” St., Canine Creek, 538 E. Tehachapi Blvd., Dollar Tree, 844 Tucker Road, Savemart, 841 Tucker Road, and Albertsons, 775 Tucker Road. Or, call 8223117 to schedule a pick-up for large donations of candy. All donations would

be greatly appreciated. Sponsors giving financial support include the Lehigh Southwest Cement Company, 13573 E. Tehachapi Blvd., Benz Sanitation, 1401 Goodrick Drive, Wood Family Funeral Home, 321 W. “F” St., and Tehachapi Flower Shop, 119 E. “F” St. Logistical assistance is being given by Tehachapi Police Department and the City of Tehachapi. You can reach Main Street Tehachapi at 8226519 with questions or to send a donation. Make checks payable to Main Street Tehachapi and mail to P.O. 830, Tehachapi, CA 93581.

Official Blues Brothers Revue performing at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center BY LANCASTER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Put on your sunglasses, ties, and fedoras for a night of comedy and blues as The Official Blues Brothers Revue, produced by Judy Belushi-Pisano and Dan Aykroyd with musical director Paul Shaffer, is set to entertain audiences at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. Paying homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, gospel and soul music, actors Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty, along with the eight-piece Intercontinental Rhythm & Blues Revue Band, will perform classic hits such as “Soul Man,” “Rubber Biscuit,” “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Rawhide,” and “Gimme Some Lovin’” with all the passion of the original Blues Brothers. The characters of Joliet Jake and Elwood Blues were originated by Dan Aykroyd and

the late John Belushi based on their shared love of blues and soul music. Their characters, a pair of white soul men in their now trademark ensemble, started as a warm-up act prior to telecasts of Saturday Night Live, eventually making their debut as featured musical guests. In 1980, Belushi and Aykroyd starred with Ray Charles, James Brown and Aretha Franklin in John Landis’ movie “The Blues Brothers.” Currently touring in The Official Blues Brothers™ Revue, Catania and Lafferty are the only duo to be sanctioned by Dan Aykroyd and Judy Belushi-Pisano to don the official hat and sunglasses and walk in the legendary footsteps of Jake and Elwood Blues. Collaborating with Judy Belushi-Pisano and Anne Beatts (Saturday Night Live, Square Pegs), Lafferty and Catania have just finished co-writing the

(Family Features) This Halloween, throw a wickedly wonderful fete for family and friends. With help from the Wilton entertaining experts, you'll have all the tricks to treat your guests to a spooky celebration that will leave them howling with delight. Halloween's not just for the kids anymore, so before you put on your costume, grab your baking and decorating supplies and get ready to let the creepy crawlers loose. "Halloween is the one time of the year that you can take your decorating skills to the dark side," said Nancy Siler, vice president of consumer affairs at Wilton. "From finishing pumpkin cookies with ghastly grins to creating creepy cakes decorated like graveyard skulls, it's the perfect holiday to have some fun in the kitchen."

TEHACHAPI NEWS If you’re looking for an outing to the Central Coast before you settle in for the season then a visit to Cambria during the Scarecrow Festival might be just the ticket. There are more than 400 scarecrows up this year in downtown Cambria, along Moonstone Beach Drive and in San Simeon. They're to be on display through Oct. 31. Judges awarded Best of Show honors to a replica of "William Randolph Hearst and Helen" at the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort in San Simeon and "The Dark Knight, by student Carlos Plummer, in front of the shop Love Me 2 Times on Main Street in Cambria. Helen, by the way, was the miniature Dachshund much-loved by the newspaper publisher whose former home is now

Hearst Castle. Other categories in the scarecrow contest were most lifelike, most unique or creative, best animation and most likely to scare people (and crows). Looking at the scarecrows it’s apparent that there are many artists in Cambria and in keeping with the season's spirit, about 50 costumed dancers (some outfitted as scarecrows — no surprise there!) launched a series of "flash mob" dances (to Michael Jackson's "Thriller") at the several public events and may reappear. Cambria is located along Highway 1 north of Morro Bay — a little more than a three hour drive from Tehachapi. If you miss the event this year, plan on it for next year; the scarecrows are on display throughout the month of October.

Practical Money Matters

Reevaluate your benefits needs during open enrollment BY JASON ALDERMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

If you're among the 170 million Americans who receive health insurance through an employer-provided plan, you'll probably receive your 2014 open enrollment materials shortly. Although it's a pain to wade through all that information, simply opting for your current coverage could be a costly mistake. Here's why: Health insurance has undergone major changes since the 2010 Affordable Care Act was passed, including the elimination of annual and lifetime coverage limits and preexisting conditions exclusions, expanded free preventive care and allowing children up to age 26 to remain on parents' plans.

In response, many employers have altered their benefit plans. Plus, if your family or income situations have changed since last year, your current plans may no longer be the best match. And, if your employer offers flexible spending accounts and you're not participating, you're leaving a valuable tax break on the table. Here's what to look for when reviewing your benefit options: Carefully compare all costs and features of the different plans offered and note how your existing coverage may be changing next year. Common changes include: • Dropped or replaced medical plans. • Increased monthly premiums, deductibles and

copayment amounts. • Revised drug formularies. • Favored doctors or hospitals withdrawing from a plan's preferred provider network. • Changes to the number of allowed visits for specialty care (acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, etc.) If offered, healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts (FSAs) can significantly offset the financial impact of medical and dependent care by letting you pay for eligible outof-pocket expenses on a pretax basis; that is, before federal, state and Social Security taxes are deducted from your paycheck. This reduces your taxable income and therefore, your taxes. You can use a healthcare FSA to pay for IRS-allowed

medical expenses not covered by your medical, dental or vision plans. Check IRS Publication 502 for allowable expenses. Dependent care FSAs let you use pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible expenses related to care for your child, spouse, parent or other dependent incapable of self-care. Here's how FSAs work: Say you earn $42,000 a year. If you contribute $1,000 to a health care FSA and $3,000 for dependent care, your taxable income would be reduced to $38,000. Your resulting net income, after taxes, would be roughly $1,600 more than if you had paid for those expenses on an after-tax basis. Remember these FSA restrictions:

• Employee contributions are limited to $2,500 a year for health care FSAs and $5,000 for dependent care. • Health care and dependent care contributions are not interchangeable. • Estimate planned expenses carefully because you must forfeit unused account balances. Some employers offer a grace period of up to 2 ½ months after the end of the plan year to incur expenses, but that's not mandatory, so check your company's policy. • Outside of open enrollment, you can only make mid-year FSA changes after a major life or family status change (marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, birth or adoption, etc.) If one occurs mid-year, re-jigger your FSAs

accordingly for maximum savings. • You must re-enroll in FSAs each year – amounts don't carry over from year to year. Compare your employer's plans alongside those offered by your spouse's employer, particularly when deciding where to insure your children. Also remember that if you marry, divorce, or gain or lose dependents, it could impact the type – and cost – of your coverage options. It's worth spending a few minutes to review your benefit coverage options for next year, especially when you consider the potential financial consequences.
