Gary Mazzola accomplishes childhood performing ‘star’ dream BY EMILY BRUNETT TEHACHAPI NEWS
Since his adolescence, Gary Mazzola wanted to be a musician. “I’ve always been into music,” he said. “I always wanted to be a ‘star.’ But I think that’s taken on a different meaning now that I’ve gotten older.” Now in his 60s, Mazzola’s career spans not just music performance and composition, but music video and short film production, theater acting and directing, and television production for KERO Bakersfield. Since moving to Tehachapi in 1990, Mazzola has made a name for himself in the local performing arts scene. His latest venture is a “reunion” concert, of sorts. Joining with fellow musicians those with whom he currently performs and others he has not shared a stage with in some time - the show, “Gary Mazzola and Friends: Night of the Crescent Moon” will be in the Beekay Theatre, 110 S. Green St., Friday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. Bandmates include Ken Leiboff on harmonica, Jerry Mulkins on lead guitar and Johnny Kamplain on bass, with special friends Greg Hahn on drums, Doug Jockinsen on keyboards and Gloria Yeager and (co-writer) Joy Gray on vocals. Mazzola said he, Mulkins and Gray are long-time friends who were together in a music group, Full Moon. “Joy and I have been singing together since we met in 1980,” Mazzola said, adding that he met Mulkins through a mutual acquaintance. “We moved to Tehachapi together and put Full Moon together and did an album.” Mazzola said he thinks Mulkins is the best guitar player in town, while Gray’s vocals and ability to harmonize is “remarkable.” He added that Gray together with Yeager makes for a “perfect blend” of voclas. Kamplain and Leiboff were partners with Mazzola in the group Planet, which also produced an album. Hahn is a relatively new addition to Mazzola’s “friends,” but worked with Mazzola on theater productions like “Guys ‘n Dolls.” Jockinsen also worked with Mazzola previously and

Through time, Mazzola said his music has morphed. Songs from his album “Planet” are very folky, he said, while the “Grateful am i” album is more pop and his more recent compositions are jazzier. “I’m not exactly sure where my music falls any more,” Mazzola said. “I’m just trying to do my music.” All of the music being performed on Sept. 6, will be original compositions, either by Mazzola or Gray, or both. Although performing comes naturally to Mazzola, perhaps his biggest obstacle now is his battle with Parkinson’s disease. But he said that while the disease presents challenges, he does not let them stand in his way. “It’s important to me that people know your life isn’t over just because you have a debilitaing disease,” Mazzola said. “I try not to let myself be limited. I do as much as I can as long as I’m physically able, and then I will
adapt.” Mazzola said that although he can no longer play piano with both his hands, he can use a sequencer when recording and editing so he can play the treble line with his right hand in one go, and the bass line with his right hand in the next go-round. He even credits the disease with making him a better songwriter. He cited research that indicates that brain diseases that attack motor skills causes the brain to compensate with its creative side. “I’ve never written better songs than right now,” he said. Jango.com, an international webbased radio station, plays Mazzola’s music and describes him as a “talented Tehachapi songwriter with an exceptional voice and a gift for writing lyrical, approachable songs about life and love.” “This is the best time of my life,” Mazzola said. “I’m doing everything I ever wanted to do. Maybe not on the same level I thought I would as a kid, but I’m happy.”

The Getty Center: A visit with the masters BY GREGORY D. COOK TEHACHAPI NEWS
American author and philosopher Henry David Thoreau wrote, “It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.” That sentence is the underlying philosophy behind the J. Paul Getty Museum and their ongoing efforts to inspire understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts. The Getty, as it is commonly called, is perched 900 feet above Interstate 405, in the Santa Monica Mountains, just north of the city of Santa Monica in the Greater Los Angeles area, but it is easily accessed by the Getty Center Drive exit off of the 405 leading into the center's massive underground parking structure. After that, visitors are ferried up to the museum's main grounds by a tram giving guests their first glimpses of the spectacular views of the surrounding area. The Getty opened in 1997, and the museum and its grounds are nearly as impressive as the art and artifacts they house. Designed by architect Richard Meier, the center is clad in Italian travertine, a beige stone that reflects nearly pure white in the morning sun, but takes on a honey-toned quality at sunset. The 1.2 million square feet of stone making up the walls and walkways of the Getty are also dotted with fossils of plants and shells and feathers. But within the impressive buildings reside the true treasures of the Getty.

The Getty Center's 134,000-square-foot garden features a hedge maze, waterfall and paths through a multitude of ever-changing flowers and trees. The center's permanent collection includes thousands of pre-20th Century European paintings, drawings, sculpture and illuminated manuscripts dating from the Middle Ages and from artists such as Renoir, Bernini and Van Gogh. The center's unique architecture allows for most of its collection to be viewed by natural lighting, giving guests the opportunity to see the art as it was meant to be viewed. In addition to the center's permanent collection, the Getty also hosts several exhibitions each year, covering subjects such as photography, contemporary art and other subjects, as well as concerts during the summer months. The museum's 44,000 works of Greek and Roman art are housed in the nearby Getty Villa in Malibu, which can be visit-

‘Red Velvet Cake War’ in rehearsal Laughter rebounds in the rehearsal hall as "Red Velvet Cake War," a southern-fried farce, prepares to open Sept. 20 at the Beekay Theatre, under the direction of Karl Schuck. The jokes center on three cousins trying to arrange the Verdeen family reunion and juggle their love lives all at the same time. Cousin Gaynell is trying to cancel out her ex and keep a shrink from declaring her a menace. Peaches is having her run-away husband declared dead and Jimmy Wyvette is stalking a new widower. The three are portrayed by Chris Morales, a Tehachapi community Theater newcomer with many credits at South Coast repertory; Annette Kirby, long-time TCT stalwart who has not chosen to appear during the past few years, and Shanon Harrell, also known as “Yoga Shanon,” a popular TCT director who is making her starring debut. Also on board is Nick Benedict, a retired soap star who was TV-married to Susan Lucci for many years. For all his many years on TV, Benedict, aka “Nick the Painter,” will be making his stage premiere playing the comic and cantankerous Great Uncle Aubrey. The Cake War part of the show also features Tehachapi favorite Debbie Whitlock, who taught drama at Tehachapi High School and has appeared in many productions. She is the domineering Aunt LeMerle who faces off Gaynell in the Red Velvet Cake cook-off. "It's a wonderful cast," noted Schuck and said, “such a delight to work with folks that have not appeared on our stage before, or have been missing in action for a long time. When the Pennsylvania steel mill where he had worked for nearly 30 years was bought out and then put into bankruptcy, Angelo not only lost his livelihood but his pension, as well. Fortunately, he had other talents, which will be on display in concert at Fiddlers Crossing, Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. Angelo M. (short for Melasecca) is a master fingerstyle and slide guitarist who was able to make the unlikely midlife transition from blue collar steel worker to award winning songwriter. He caught Nashville’s attention with his two successful self-released albums, and his 2012 label debut, “From Steel to Strings,” is now gaining worldwide airplay. There are those who like the bright lights of the city and the photo-ops that present themselves in such locations. Then there are those photographers who enjoy the challenges presented by nature’s unusual and unique forms and the treks taken to get that “perfect shot.” Gallery ‘n’ Gifts featured artist for September is Dennis Cowden, a photographer who revels in the forms nature provides for the lens of his camera. Cowden looks for unique and unusual subjects on off-beat back roads that often times present a challenge just getting there. “I guess I am inspired by the uncommon and by balance in my photography,” Cowden said. “I love the western states and the rock formations that can be found in Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Colorado. The ‘shot’ you see in a magazine or book is not the ‘shot’ for me. My first camera was the Kodak Brownie Hawkeye, which I still have and won my first photo contest
award at 11 years of age. It was a photo of a Christmas tree at a local five and dime store.” Cowden says he always has a camera with him, catching scenes of spectacular sunsets and dust swirling in the wind. “My camera was a technical tool until I moved to Tehachapi where I found sights and scenery that warrant thought and planning to capture the perfect shot,” he said. “That’s when the adventure began and of course the love affair with more and higher quality equipment. I constantly study books, articles on the internet and visit museums and other locations where I study and naturally, critique other photographers, deciding what I would do differently and in my opinion ‘better.’” In conjunction with his featured artist stature, Cowden will be hosting Coffee with the Artist at Gallery ‘n’ Gifts Saturday, Sept. 28. The California City Parks and Recreation Department and the California City Arts Commission have announced the dates for the 11th Annual Renaissance Festival. The event is scheduled to take place Oct. 19-20 in California City Central Park. The organizations also have announced that there will be a Royal Masked Ball in the new Arts & Community Center and a Queen’s High Tea by the lake. The Park and Rec department has chosen the setting to be 16th Century England with his Majesty Henry VIII and his Royal Court for all to see. The featured musical entertainment will follow suit with the local band Mayde in Ireland. California City Park and Rec Director Brenda Daverin predicts this year’s event will be its largest. “Not only have we contacted all of our previous vendors, entertainers and guilds, we have already secured new entertainment for our event,” Daverin said. “We will be having a double event. Apple Fries Peanut Butter Surprise Makes: 1 Sandwich
• 1 8-inch flour tortilla • 3 tablespoons Jif® Creamy Peanut Butter, divided • 1 tablespoon granola (small chunks) • 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips • 1 large apple 1. LAY tortilla flat on plate. Spread 2 tablespoons peanut butter in 4-inch circle in top center of tortilla (start about 2 inches down from top). 2. We all know that sinking feeling when you get pulled over for a traffic violation. If you're lucky, you might just get a “fix-it” ticket for a broken tail light. But what if it was a more serious offense, like speeding or reckless driving? Depending on your driving record, you could get slapped with a sizeable penalty or even a jail sentence – and your insurance rates will almost certainly go up. Let's say you absentmindedly ran through a stop sign or made an illegal left-hand turn. You'll prob-
ably know right away how much the ticket will cost, but it could take months before your insurance company receives notice of the infraction and adjusts your premium. If the suspense is killing you, Insurance.com has a handy tool called the “UhOh! Calculator” that estimates the average rate increases for the 14 most common traffic violations. And, if you enter your age, ZIP code, residence type, marital status, length of time with your insurance carrier and current premium, the calculator will generate a more customized estimate based on your personal data. Some of the average premium increases are pretty shocking: • Reckless driving: 22 percent • DUI first offense: 19 percent • Driving without a license or permit: 18 percent • Careless driving: 16 percent • Speeding 30 mph over the limit: 15 percent • Failure to stop: 15 percent • Improper turn: 14 percent • Improper passing: 14 percent • Following too close/tailgating: 13 percent • Speeding 15 to 29 mph over limit: 12 percent • Speeding 1 to 14 mph over limit: 11 percent • Failure to yield: 9 percent If you plug in your per-
sonal data, the calculator will tell you how many points will be added to your driving record per infraction, as well as information on the state's rules for when driving privileges can be suspended or revoked. Another company, DMV.org, features a “Ticket Fines and Penalties” tool that provides an even more detailed state-by-state analysis of what various infractions can cost, procedures for paying – or challenging – your ticket, how points are calculated, how long it takes to clear infractions from your record, links to local traffic schools and much more. So, assuming you're not going to challenge the ticket in court, the damage has been done and your insurance rates will likely climb – what can you do to lower your premium? Here are a few tips: • Investigate whether attending traffic school will erase the ticket from your record. • When your policy is up for renewal, get rate quotes
from at least three carriers. Talk to an insurance agent or use an online comparison site – just be aware that not every carrier participates in these sites and make sure you're comparing apples to apples, since companies often package coverage differently. • Another reason to comparison shop: Insurance companies calculate risk differently, so particular traffic infractions might trigger varying increases, depending on the carrier. • Increasing your deductibles from $250 to $1,000 might lower your premium by 15 to 30 percent. • Ask about discounts for things like low annual mileage, being over a certain age, good grades, vehicle safety features or buying your homeowners or renters insurance from the same company. The best way to avoid traffic violation-related rate increases is to not break the law in the first place. But if that horse has already left the barn, arm yourself with information about coverage costs and how you might be able to lower your rates. The fundamentals of compost tea are very simple: it’s merely compost suspended in a porous bag (like cheesecloth) and soaked in water. If the compost was of good quality, then the water typically takes on a dark black in color (appearing a lot like a strong black tea). However, compost tea quality depends on the quality of the parent compost, and compost can vary quite a bit in its makeup, depending upon what went into it and how it was processed. Many claims are made for compost tea, including uses as a fertilizer and as a disease suppressant. Some of these claims are realistic, others are fanciful. Since compost tea is basically a leached solution of compost, it often has many of
the beneficial characteristics of that compost, but not always. One of the benefits that compost tea imparts to the water is its nutrient content. Compost tea can work well as a liquid fertilizer, and in many instances some of the nutrients it contains can be taken up directly by the leaves of the plant, before the tea even reaches the ground. However, concerns about the other liquid fertilizers apply to compost tea as well. Only as much compost tea should be applied as plants can absorb. Any more that this is likely to result in those nutrients leaching into ground or surface waters. Any overapplication of nutrients constitutes environmental pollution, regardless of

Compost tea works quite well as a liquid fertilizer Continued from page 10 including its purported ability to cure plant diseases. In order to address this claim, we must differentiate between two compost tea types: Compost Aerated Tea (ACT) and Non-aerated Compost Tea (NCT). Non-aerated tea can simply be made in a bag, as described above. Aerated compost tea is typically made in a vat with an agitator to insure an even oxygen distribution as it is made. To date, there are no
peer-reviewed scientific studies that show that ACT reliably cures any disease, despite dozens of research projects aimed at investigating this over the last 25 years. Most of these studies were never published, presumably because they were viewed as failures by the investigators when ACT performed the same as water. In some instances, ACTs have actually been shown to increase disease severity on the plants they
were applied to. There are also many studies that appear to show compost tea as effective, but most have serious flaws in experimental design. These are typically published in non-peer-reviewed publications where there is less scrutiny of experimental procedures. Non-aerated compost teas have a research record that is only slightly better, resulting in mild but consistently measurable suppressant effects on a few
foliar plant diseases. Regardless of these claims, these compost teas are not registered as pesticides, so they cannot legally be applied to control insects or biotic diseases in a landscape setting by a commercial applicator. This is because in order to obtain registration in California, the product has to be shown to be consistently effective. Consistency can be hard to demonstrate for a biological product that may contain many
different strains of fungi and bacteria, even if the parent material is relatively consistent, since weather plays a role in how compost develops. This is not to say that compost teas don’t have a place in the landscaper’s toolbox; all current research to date shows compost tea to be a good natural delivery tool for a quick boost of nutrients. As such, applicators should take care to use compost teas in a judicious manner.
Plain old compost, not the tea, typically acts to release those same nutrients in a slower manner, plus it has the added benefits of cooling and cushioning the soil. So to really get the most out of your compost, perhaps it is best to apply it to the landscape, and let nature make the tea with rain or irrigation water, unless you have a specific need for a quick boost, and are sure you know how much to use.
