Competitor Ashley Bishop, 14, takes a commanding march during her rendition of Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know-It-All" in the Tehachapi Idol contest at Pacino's, 1100 W. Tehachapi Blvd. Bishop advanced to the finals. They should be on stage." The event has consistently brought in at least 100 patrons. Coowner and emcee of the Idol concerts Chris Schatz registered surprise at the packed room on Sunday, June 30, at the semi-finals. “Wow, it’s really crowded in here tonight,” he said, raising his eyebrows. Admission to the finals is $20. Schatz strongly encouraged the audience to make advance reservations. This can be done by calling the restaurant at 822-9400. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the music starts at 4 p.m.

The five remaining Tehachapi Idol contestants will vie for the $4,000 grand prize at the final concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 14 inside Pacino's, 1100 W. Tehachapi Blvd. Tim Lomba, 43, Olivia Simko, 29, Michelle Fulton, 27, Johnathan Cartier, 41, and Ashley Bishop, 14, will sing two songs each during the last concert of the competition: one chosen by the judges and another of their own choice. Among the judges’ selections are “Mercy,” “Wagon Wheel” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Each of the five judges are Tehachapi locals with backgrounds in music. Charisse Rudolph writes lyrics and currently has some songs floating around the Nashville music scene. Shyenne, who prefers being known by her stage name, has been a singer for more than 20 years. Kaleigh Meister and Adonae Mierop are previous Tehachapi Idol winners, while Debbie Irizarry is a former contestant. Unlike the previous weeks, the singers will be accompanied by a live band — Fleetwood Mock. And instead of votes being cast in the form of dollars, the judges will decide the winner. Each contestant has a unique style: Lomba traditionally performs slow songs, Simko broke out her guitar on at least one occasion, Fulton uses broadway-esque theatrics to punctuate her songs, Cartier is called “country boy” by the judges and Bishop is consistently praised for her ability at such a young age. Tge Tehachapi Idol competition was founded by the restaurant’s original owner Frank Spaccarelli. New co-owner Diane Anderson continued it and said she thinks it could not be going any better. "The entertainment is phenomenal," she said. "These people that come up and audition are amazing.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don't be Sheepish about asking questions and demanding answers. You not only gain needed information, but also respect for your steadfast search for the truth. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A money problem that shows up early in the week is expeditiously resolved by savvy Bovines who know how to turn a momentary financial lapse into a monetary gain. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It's a good time to shed negative energy-draining forces and develop a positive approach to handling current, as well as upcoming, personal and/or pro-
fessional situations. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your urge to do your best on a current task is commendable. But don't let it become all-consuming. Spend some spiritually restorative time with those who love you. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) This could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas to take your bows for your recent achievements and then go off to enjoy some fun times with your prides and joys. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) A negative response to a well-intentioned suggestion could communicate a sense of distrust you might later find hard to refute.
Getting "Footloose" is Tim Lomba, 43, finalist in the Tehachapi Idol competition that was held at Pacino's on June 30.
Think carefully before reacting. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Your loving attention comforts a family member who is feeling a bit out of sorts. But be careful to prioritize your time so you don't neglect your work duties. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Your curiosity might be resented by some. But those who know you will support your penchant for never settling for less than the truth. So stay with it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A pesky situation from the past recurs, albeit in an altered form. Deal with it promptly before it can go from merely irksome to decidedly troublesome. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Don't wait too long to submit your proposals after giving them a last
look-over. If necessary, you should be able to defend any portion called into question. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A bid to use your workplace dispute-settling skills in another situation is tempting. But be careful: You might not have all the facts you'll need if you agree to do it. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) That sense of selfdoubt is so untypical of you, you should have no qualms in shaking it off. Remind yourself of all you've done and can do, and then do it again. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to charm others without sacrificing sincerity is what makes people want to follow your leadership. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc., provided as entertainment.

Journey
Critters, water and nature; the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve has it all BY MATTHEW MARTZ TEHACHAPI NEWS
Hidden along the east side of Pacific Coast Highway across from Orange County’s Bolsa Chica State Beach, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve includes more than 1,200 acres of undeveloped wetlands, lowlands and lower mesa operated by the California Department of Fish and Game. It is one of the last remaining wetlands in southern California. For several thousand years, Native Americans inhabited the wetlands and surrounding bluffs, but for the past century the area was used for a hunting ground, for gun emplacements by the United States military during World War II and as an extensive oil production field. More recently however, the reserve has been the home to an abundance of coastal wildlife and is open to the public to explore daily from sunrise

Journey: Bolsa Chica admission is free Continued from page 7 ture at the reserve’s interpretive center, located in the parking lot at PCH and Warner Avenue. Maps can be obtained to help identify all the possible things visitors might see during their visit.
Leaving the center, visitors will cross the Los Patos Bridge on their way to the main trail that loops 1.5 miles around the pristine coastal water inlet. In spring, wildflowers often line the path from the parking lot to the upper mesa.
Just a short walk from the bridge are the reserve’s main marshlands, where all types of marine activity hums in the shallow waters below a long wooden pedestrian bridge, including sting rays, fish and native undersea plant life.

Visitors may also be able to catch a glimpse of feisty diving terns or pelicans as they look for tasty meal. Every year, especially during the migration seasons, almost 200 different species of bird can be seen here, including huge flocks of loons, grebes or scoters. None of the trails on the reserve are too strenuous, providing a unique environment that is perfect for families with small kids and seniors. Sunsets are the best time to visit, as the views
are prime. With 95 percent of the state's coastal wetlands destroyed, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is one place you don’t want to miss visiting sometime soon, as the exploding population is always threatening to encroach upon this pristine natural treasure. The reserve is approximately 149 miles from downtown Tehachapi, at 3842 Warner Ave., Huntington Beach. There are two parking
lots, one located on Warner Avenue near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and the other is located on Pacific Coast Highway almost directly across the Bolsa Chica State Beach entrance. There is no charge for parking. As always it is best to call ahead before embarking on any journey to verify operating hours. The Bolsa Chica Reserve can be reached at 714-8461114.

Relay is July 13-14 at Coy Burnett Field BY DUANA PERA CONTRIBUTING WRITER
This year we will “Celebrate 10 Years of Relay” for our local American Cancer Society Relay for Life. On July 13 and 14 more than 65 teams, 700 participants and 200 survivors will take the field and walk for 24 hours in the fight against cancer. The general public is invited to come join in the festivities and support our teams. The teams each decorate their booths in themes and most will be selling wonderful items to help
fundraise for cancer research. Opening ceremonies start at 8:30 a.m., the Mini-Concert starts at 5 p.m. and the memorable Luminaria Ceremony starts at 8:30 p.m. Closing ceremonies start on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone to come to the track and be part of the largest fundraiser in Tehachapi. The Relay teams are so excited this year and have come up with some pretty inventive ways to raise funds. For example, RST Cranes will

have their smallest crane at the field and for only $10 anyone can learn how to operate the crane and compete in the first Relay “Crane Rodeo.” Just drop the ball in three different buckets in the shortest amount of time to win. “I’ll do that,” said Lisa Taylor, Luminaria Committee co-chair and member of Team Light Your Way. “I would pay $10 in a heartbeat to be able to operate a crane!” The Entertainment Committee has also put together a day loaded with something for everyone. There will be theme laps every half hour for observers to guess the theme lap, or call for a schedule and just come join in the fun. This year, teams were offered the chance to sponsor a lap, and many have done just that. Team Terra-Gen Thunderbolts Strike Cancer are handing out pinwheels and everyone will carry the pinwheels as they walk the laps. And this year Relay is offering a free mini-concert for everyone starting at 5 p.m. with local musician and singer Mike Heckathorn. At 6 p.m. another local musician, Adam Wojack, will join with his fellow band mates and take to the stage as Heralds of the Sword, or HOTS. This is a combination of fantasy and rock in full medieval costumes. Last on stage will be a Christian rock group from Rosa-
Luminaria bags on the track at dusk “in memory of” and “in honor of.” mond called “Strings and a Prayer.” We plan to celebrate all day long. Part of that celebration is theme laps, games in center field and lots of dancing and music. We are also doing flash mobs and everyone interested in being part of our mobs can come join us; no dancing skills required! But at 8:30 p.m., the Luminaria Committee will once again present a memorable presentation on why we Relay. For one incredible hour we come together at dusk to remember all those we have lost to cancer and light the Luminaria bags around the track. As the glow sticks are lit, we walk in the dark and read the names of those
“in memory of” and those “in honor of who have won or are winning the fight against cancer.” Kids Camp this year is going to be outstanding. Bring your young kids and for a small donation, they will be entertained by Nita Duhart and her playful team. Then walk the track and help make a difference in the fight against cancer by supporting our teams. For more information on the 2013 Tehachapi Relay for Life, go to relayforlife.org/tehachapica, or call Duana Pera at 972-7595, Barb Villasenor at 332-4975 or Tracy Lankin at 805-5210. Health & Fitness Ask the Doctor
DASH — a simple approach to lower blood pressure BY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D. CONTRIBUTING WRITER
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I was very interested in your column on the DASH diet. Is there a diet sheet listing all the items pertaining to this diet? How can I get one? I think it's a doable diet. — I.P. ANSWER: DASH, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is a doable, simple and good-tasting diet. People are disappointed to find out that the diet is contained on one page with straightforward directives. The sheet lists the number of servings of a particular food group, what constitutes a serving and examples of the foods in each group. That's
all there is. You can expect a drop of 8 to 14 points in blood pressure if you're faithful to it. One of the most important diet changes is limiting sodium (salt) consumption to 1,500 grams. Here's the diet:
GRAINS: Six to eight servings a day; whole-grain breads like wheat, cereals (both dry and cooked), brown rice and pastas are grains. A serving is one slice of bread, one cup of dry cereal and half a cup of cooked cereal.
FRUITS: Four to six daily servings, with a serving being a moderately sized whole fruit, a half-cup of frozen or canned fruit or a halfcup of fruit juice.
VEGETABLES: Four to five servings a day, with a serving being one cup of leafy green veggie, 1/2 cup cut up, raw or cooked vegetables or 1/2 cup vegetable juice.
DAIRY: Two to three servings a day of low-fat dairy products, with a serving being a cup of skim or low-fat milk, a cup of yogurt or one and a half ounces of cheese.
LEAN MEATS, POULTRY, FISH: Six or fewer servings
a day. A serving is one ounce of cooked meat, skinless chicken or fish. One egg is also a serving.
NUTS, SEEDS, DRY BEANS: Four to five servings a week. One serving is a third cup of nuts, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, a half a cup of dry beans.
FATS AND OILS: Two to three servings a day, with a serving being equal to 1 tablespoon of low-fat mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon of margarine, 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons of salad dressing.
SWEETS: Five or less a week. A serving is a tablespoon of sugar or a teaspoon
of jam or jelly. The booklet on high blood pressure explains what it is and how it's treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have osteoporosis. I was put on Actonel (risedronate) by my former doctor. My new doctor had me switch to Fosamax (alendronate) when it came out as a generic. This doctor says you must take vitamin D
and calcium also. Are they necessary? — B.G. ANSWER: They are necessary. They work hand in hand with osteoporosis medicines. Calcium is the mineral needed for strong bones. Vitamin D enhances the absorption of calcium from the digestive tract into the blood. Not having a supply of these two is like trying to build a sandcastle without sand. DR. DONOHUE regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. © 2013 North America Synd., Inc., all rights reserved.

Home & Garden (Family Features) Few things better capture the feel of summer than the three S's: sun, sand and, of course, seafood. Welcome the warm weather and embrace the fresh flavors of the sea with simple, yet delicious, coastalinspired dishes. Always a family favorite due to its versatility, seafood takes on a plethora of flavors - from spicy to buttery and beyond. These Crispy Crab Cakes with Spicy Remoulade will make your mouth water with every savory crunch, while smooth, Creamy Risotto with Asparagus and Shrimp will richly impress even the pickiest of palates.
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 cup cracker crumbs • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Combine all ingredients for Spicy Remoulade Sauce into large bowl. Set aside. In large bowl, combine crabmeat, red bell pepper, egg, horseradish, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Fold in 1/4 cup of cracker crumbs. Form crab mixture into 2-inch cakes, about 1/2 inch thick. Dredge cakes in remaining cracker crumbs. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook crab cakes until golden, about 2 minutes per side. Serve with Spicy Remoulade Sauce.
A Perfect Pairing Any sea-inspired fare pairs perfectly with a crisp, dry white wine, such as the flavorful Albarioo from Martin Cudax. With origins spanning back to 12th century Spain, the flavorful Albarioo possesses tropical fruit aromas and bright citrus flavors. Also known as the "Wine of the Sea," this wine is the perfect accompaniment to any seafood dish. Consider serving this winning combination at your next outdoor gathering or dinner party and you're sure to receive countless compliments. Whether you're looking for small bites or a heartier entree, eat sea-to-table this season and take advantage of what summer has to offer. For more information, please visit www.martincodax.com. Suggestions for serving seafood With so many seafood choices it can be difficult to know how to pick the freshest catch. Here are some tips to ensure you're choosing the best at your next visit to the market or fish counter: • Milk Does a Salmon Good — Milk tenderizes salmon and removes any frostbite or fishy taste, so try defrosting salmon in a container of milk for a fresher flavor. • Float On, Mussels — Mussels love to float. If a mussel sinks to the bottom of a container filled with water, throw it away — it's a sign of a bad mollusk. • "R" for Really Fresh — Oysters taste best when they are harvested during colder weather. For a good rule of thumb, enjoy them during months with an "R" in the name, for example, September through April. • In the Red — Quality tuna should be deep red with no "rainbow" coloring, which is a sign of old fish.
• 2 tablespoons finely chopped scallions • 2 teaspoons lemon juice Salmon:
• 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 4 salmon fillets, each about 6 ounces Combine all ingredients for Hazelnut Butter in bowl; set aside. Sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of salmon. In a preheated grill pan, grill salmon, skin side up, for four minutes. Flip salmon, topping each fillet with 1 tablespoon of Hazelnut Butter. Cook for 4 minutes until salmon flakes easily with fork. Serve with sauteed green beans.
Grilled Salmon with Hazelnut Butter
Creamy Risotto with Asparagus and Shrimp
Yield: 4 servings
Yield: 4 servings
Hazelnut Butter:
• 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined • 4 cups vegetable broth • 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces • 1 large shallot, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 cup Arborio rice • 1/2 cup Martin Cudax Albarioo or other dry white wine • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil • Salt and pepper
• 3 tablespoons butter, softened • 2 tablespoons finely chopped hazelnuts, toasted
Crispy Crab Cakes with Spicy Remoulade Yield: About 16 crab cakes Spicy Remoulade Sauce:
• 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 2 teaspoons capers, chopped • 1 teaspoon coarse-ground mustard • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce Crab Cakes:
• 8 ounces lump crabmeat, drained and flaked • 1 cup finely chopped red bell pepper • 1 large egg • 1 tablespoon grated horseradish
Heat oil in 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat and cook shrimp, stirring occasionally. Remove shrimp once they are almost fully cooked. Bring vegetable broth to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer. Add cut asparagus to broth and cook for 2 minutes. With slotted spoon, remove asparagus and set aside with shrimp. In a 3-quart saucepan over medium-high heat, cook shallots in butter until translucent. Stir in rice to coat the grains and cook for approximately 1 minute. Add in the wine and stir until absorbed by rice. Once absorbed, stir in vegetable broth 1/2 cup at a time. Note: each 1/2 cup must be absorbed completely before the next one is added. Continue to stir the risotto to keep it from sticking and repeat with remaining broth until all has been added. Stir in shrimp and asparagus and heat through. Add Parmesan cheese and drizzle with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately. Source: Martin Cudax

When caller ID first arrived on the scene it seemed like a godsend to many people: Now you could easily identify who was on the line and ignore unwanted calls, whether from telemarketers, an ex-boyfriend or an unfriendly collection agency. But as often happens, unscrupulous individuals soon began manipulating the technology to defraud people by pretending to be someone else. Their scheme is called "caller ID spoofing" and disturbingly, it's perfectly legal in many cases. Here's how caller ID spoofing works and what precautions you should take to avoid being victimized: For a very low cost, businesses and individuals can use widely available caller ID spoofing software to generate calls that alter the telephone number and/or name which appear on the recipient's caller ID screen. Police, private investigators and collection agencies have used legal spoofing services for many years. Others who might have a legitimate reason to hide their identity when making a call include domestic violence victims and doctors returning patient calls who don't wish to release their private telephone numbers. Beyond that, the lines of legality begin to blur. The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009 prohibits anyone from transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller ID information with the intent to defraud, cause harm or
wrongfully obtain anything of value. Violators can be penalized up to $10,000 for each infraction. Unfortunately, such penalties haven't dissuaded many scammers. One common scam involves spoofers pretending to represent a bank, government agency, insurer, credit card company or other organization with which you do business. They count on you being reassured after recognizing the company's name on your screen. Under the pretext of warning about an urgent situation (breached account, late payment, pending insurance claim, missed jury duty summons, etc.), the spoofer will try to coax you into revealing personal or account information, supposedly to verify their records. Often these are robocalls, where a recorded voice asks you to stay on the line to speak to a representative or call another number for more information. Do not. If you suspect the call might possibly be genuine, contact the company yourself at the toll-free number found on your card, account statement or the company's website. You should never
reveal your full Social Security number, mother's maiden name, credit card number, passwords or other private information over the phone unless you initiated the call yourself. Someone possessing such information could use it to gain access to your existing accounts to withdraw or transfer money, raise credit limits or snoop around your recent activity, among other intrusions. ID thieves also can use your personal information to open new credit accounts (e.g., credit cards, mortgage or car loan), create a new identity or even obtain a job fraudulently. Often, you won't even realize something's wrong until a collection agency — or the IRS — starts hounding you for unpaid bills or taxes. Another common caller ID spoof involves hacking into someone's voice mail account. Many cellphone users never bother to set up passwords on their voice mailboxes. And, since many voicemail systems grant access to callers phoning from their own number, a hacker could easily spoof your number and gain access to your messages. Bottom line: You wouldn't give your personal information to a stranger on the street. Take the same level of precaution with strangers on the phone – or online. Container gardening offers many options to solve problems or just let you enjoy your garden more.
Gardening Time
Five creative ways to use containers in your landscape BY MELINDA MYERS CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Container gardens have long been used to add a spot of color by a front entrance or expand planting space in city lots, balconies and decks. Don’t let past experience and tradition limit your vision. Try one or more of these attractive, fun and functional ways to include containers in your landscape, large or small.
Vertical interest Add vertical interest to any garden or garden space. Select a large attractive container filled with tall plants like papyrus and canna. Or elevate a small pot on steppers or an overturned pot for added height. Create height with smaller pots and plants by strategically stacking and planting them into a creative planting. Try setting any of these planters right in the garden to create a dramatic focal point.
Screening Create a privacy screen or mask a bad view. Use an arbor or other support for hanging baskets and then place a few containers below for an attractive screen. Or create a garden of containers to provide seasonal interest using a variety of plants. Use trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses for height. Save money by purchasing smaller plants. Elevate these on overturned pots for added height and impact. Mask the mechanics by wrapping the pots in burlap. Then add a few colorful selfwatering pots in the foreground for added color and beauty. Fill these with annuals or perennials for additional seasonal interest.
Easy does it! Bring the garden right to your back door for ease of harvest and added entertainment. A self-watering patio planter, windowbox, or rail planter reduces maintenance and makes harvesting herbs as easy as reaching out the window or backdoor. Plus, guests will have fun harvesting their
own fresh mint for mojitos or greens for their salads.
Define space Define outdoor living spaces within your landscape. Use containers as walls and dividers to separate entertaining and play areas from quiet reflective spaces. And consider using pots with built in casters or set them on moveable saucers to make moving these pots easier. This way you can expand and shrink individual spaces as needed simply by moving the pots.
Transformation Create your own vacation paradise. Use planters filled with cannas, bananas, palms and New Zealand flax for a more tropical flare. Add some wicker furniture to complete the scene. Or fill vertical gardens, an old child’s wagon, metal colander or wooden and concrete planters with cacti and succulents. Add some old branches and large stones. You’ll feel as though you’ve hiked into the desert. All you need is a bit of space and creativity to find fun new ways to put containers to work for you in the garden this season. MELINDA MYERS is a gardening expert, TV/radio host, author and columnist who has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written more than 20 gardening books, including Can’t Miss Small Space Gardening. Tips to help choose a small pet for your family (Family Features) It's fun for parents to surprise children with new small pets, like guinea pigs and hamsters. Plus, these small animals are a great first pet for kids and can teach children responsibility. But before adding to the family, it's important to make sure you are bringing home the right pet for your family. "Small pets are great, playful new pals. And the best way for families to choose a pet and
sories to keep your pet happy and healthy. For example, guinea pigs are easy to tame, affectionate and expressive, and need plenty of floor space to play. Hamsters, which are known for being playful and active, need a multilevel habitat large enough to include an exercise wheel and tunnels. Understand the pet's habits: Some small pets are nocturnal and are most likely to be active at night — which means you
make them part of your home is to consider how the pet is going to fit into your lives," says Dr. Kemba Marshall, veterinarian and pet care expert at PetSmart. Take some time to learn how to best care for your small pet before you bring it home. Make sure you: Choose the right habitat: Small pet habitats have varying requirements, and there are must-have supplies and acces-
might not get as much daytime play time as you like. Ask about special care needs for your small pet, too. Chinchillas, which are known for their especially soft fur, need dust baths to clean themselves, and Syrian hamsters require grooming products like brushes and wipes help them look and smell good. Provide proper nutrition: Each animal has its own nutritional needs. Guinea pigs and
chinchillas are herbivores so they need diets that include at least 75 percent high-fiber hay. Guinea pigs also need vitamin C supplements. Many rodents' teeth never stop growing, so providing wood chews or edible houses offers not only a yummy surprise but also helps keep teeth trimmed. For additional information on choosing and caring for small pets, visit www.petsmart.com.
