So much of the music young people listen to, write and perform today is dark and even nihilistic. Then along comes a gleam of light in the form of Shelby & Tieg, a singing, songwriting folk-pop duo from Los Angeles, of all places. This is the kind of music your mother would love to have you love if you were 13. It’s also music that is so fresh and beautiful that your mother – and father, for that matter - will be enchanted with it, as well. Shelby & Tieg will be in concert at Fiddlers Crossing, 206 E. “F” St., on Tuesday, July 30, at 7 p.m. Armed with gorgeous voices and only an acoustic guitar, they have created a unique sound in their choice of harmonies. They are both trained musicians. Shelby is a studio singer and Tieg a guitar teacher. In their concerts, they perform original songs as well as covers, including “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” and a few Disney classics like you've never heard

Dear Bret, It is nigh impossible to comprehend the fact that it has been nearly a year and a half to the day that you’ve been in Heaven, and we now have two grandsons, whom you’ve never met. It still seems to me that you will be coming home from work for dinner soon, or that you’ve taken a very long vacation; sometimes my heart even skips a beat when I hear the phone, and I just know it is you. Anyway, I used to get frustrated with you about procrastinating, and now, look at me! Nearly two months after Caius Ray Ash was born, I am just finishing up this article for his birth announcement. I just don’t function on all pistons without you! So this week in the T-Town newspaper, I am once and for all making it official! So here goes. Caius Ray Ash was born to Kevin and Deanna Ash on May 8, 2013, at 15:53 P.M., after a solid day and a half of waiting inside San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield, California (I still think I should get to blame his dawdling on you!) . He was a very big boy, weighing in at 8.97 pounds and measuring 20 inches long. I think God finally gave me my blue-eyed baby, but I have to admit that he looks just like Kevin, only with your eyes! As far as his size goes, he may also be getting his height from you, since he isn’t even fitting into newborn or infant clothes anymore. On that day, our Savior gave me two precious gifts that I have to tell you about, Babe. They had to be the most amazing and poignant moments that I have encountered, since before you left me behind on this
earth. The first was when Ashley brought Evin to visit just a couple of hours before his cousin was born. As soon as she set foot into the hospital room, and Evin made eye contact with me, he threw his arms out towards me to hold him. The second was another, “Be still my heart,” as I breathlessly watched the unqualified miracle of our daughter giving birth to our second beautiful grandson. To behold the divergence on her face of horrific pain, and then minutes later, utter joy, as the doctor handed Caius to her and Kevin, it was reminiscent of God’s unconditional love towards us, that in our absolute hurt and despair, He can turn it completely around into something so grandly, overwhelmingly beautiful that it takes our breath away and places us in awe of His unconditional love and salvation. I used to worry that you would not get to be a part of these significant moments in our lives until your son so wisely imparted a Troneism (What has now become known as Trone’s wisdom.) at me. He said something like, “Mommy, even if Fasha cannot see us still here on earth, do you think that Jesus isn’t standing there beside him describing to him the unfolding events in our lives? And don’t you think that Jesus’ story about us would far surpass in wonder and detail what he himself would be seeing if Daddy could look down upon us? Hot summer days often deter participation in outdoor activities. That’s why the California Living Museum started its Twilight program, according to Zoo Manager Lana Fain. “It's a ‘cool’ way to visit the zoo,” Fain said. “Our animals are much more active in the evening.” CALM, located at 10500 Alfred Harrell Highway in Bakersfield, boasts about 14 park-like acres, home to more than 80 species of unreleasable animals, according to the museum’s website. Natural exhibits include an open black bear exhibit, birds of prey and a mammal round that houses bobcats. Plant life is also abundant along the path through the zoo. The butterfly and hummingbird garden attracts those sought-after creatures, while the “Trees of California” section provides some education about native plant life. Fain said she has many favorite animals and exhibits at the zoo, but trying to pick one is “like asking a mom who her favorite child is.” “I would have to say our Mountain Lion and the Cats of California Exhibit [is my favorite],” Fain said. “I helped raise Sage — our mountain lion — and the completion of that exhibit was a long-time dream that became a reality. I also have a special bond with Clyde the coyote — he is quite a character.” Although the Twilight program has been a regular summer event for CALM through the past nine years, Fain said it was revived and revised from a night tour with flashlights to an evening stroll with an option for a picnic. With sunset still hanging around 8 p.m., the Twilight hours of 5 until 8 p.m. still provide adequate daylight for visitors to see the animals.

One of the challenges of the Twilight program, Fain said, is making the public aware of the evening hours. “[Turnout] has increased, but in those increases we have seen dips in attendance and that is to be expected,” Fain said. “That being said, attendance numbers are not as high as I would like them to be.” Of course, that means the zoo is not crowded for visitors, either. “My goal, hopes and dreams for CALM is expansion of the facility, acquisition of new animals and increased attendance,” Fain said, “to become a zoo that rivals larger zoos to the north and south of us. My goal for our guests is to have an unforgettable zoo experience and to take away an increased respect and knowledge about wildlife.” Admission to Twilight is $1 less than regular admission; $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for children

An annual event is coming to Tehachapi. The 13th annual Chalk on the Walk, sponsored by Tehachapi Valley Arts Association, will bring the sidewalks of Downtown Tehachapi to life with glorious color and artistic talent, Saturday, Aug. 10. Street painting, with chalk as a temporary medium, is an Italian art form tradition, dating back to the 16th Century. Painters known as “Madonnari” would travel from village to village, telling their stories with chalk in the village squares. A phenomenal group of artists will converge on the downtown sidewalks to display their interpretations of this historical art form. Artists of all ages and skill levels draw for pleasure, prizes and ribbons along Tehachapi Boulevard and Green Street.

Health & Fitness Smoke from wildfires hazardous to health NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH Wildfires are unplanned, destructive fires that rapidly spread out of control, especially in wilderness or rural areas. Wildfires can be a threat to human and animal life, natural resources, and property. Smoke from wildfires can be a threat to human health. Wildfire smoke is made up of a complex mixture of gases and fine particles from burning trees and other plant materials. The biggest threat to human health from wildfire smoke comes from the smoke’s fine particles, which are a category of particulate matter. Gases found in wildfire smoke include aldehydes, carbon monoxide, dioxin, nitrogen oxides, ozone, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals such as mercury. Smoke also contains acrolein, formaldehyde, and benzene, but at much lower concentrations than fine particles and carbon monoxide. Some volatile organic compounds are known or reasonably anticipated to be carcinogens. When forests burn from wildfires, the carbon they store can be released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Exposure to wildfire smoke can cause reduced lung function, bronchitis, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, chest pain, scratchy throat, runny nose, irritated sinuses, headaches, and stinging eyes, nose, and throat. Older adults, children, and people with heart or lung disease are more likely to be affected by wildfire smoke.

Smoking isn’t only cause of emphysema BY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D. CONTRIBUTING WRITER
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I work with a woman who claims she has emphysema. She smokes regularly and finds herself out of breath when coming up the stairs. She is 60. She says when she was 9, a local gas station near her home moved and, in the process, pulled up the gas tanks that provide gas to the pumps. The fumes from the move caused her emphysema. She doesn't know anyone else with the problem, and there are no class-action lawsuits I can find that cite gas fumes from moving gas tanks as causing emphysema. Will you clarify and talk about emphysema? — E.E. ANSWER: Emphysema is destruction of the millions of air sacs that fill the lungs. It's through these sacs that oxygen reaches the blood. One of the chief signs of emphysema is shortness of breath when active, as in climbing stairs. Emphysema is one-half of chronic obstructive pulmonary dis-
ease, COPD. The other half is chronic bronchitis, an inflammation and narrowing of the breathing tubes, filled with pus. The inflamed tubes obstruct airflow into the lungs. The chief sign of chronic bronchitis is a never-ending cough. Smoking is the greatest cause of COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, but not the only cause. In past days, workers in mines inhaling the dust were subject to emphysema, as were people who worked in cotton mills. Those who made a living in grain-processing plants also were subject to COPD. Now stringent regulations protect these workers. An inherited condition, called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, also leads to emphysema. Alpha-1 antitrypsin tells cells that scrub the interior of air sacs to
stop scrubbing when the air sacs are clean. Without its signal, scrubbing goes on, and the air sacs are destroyed. I have never heard of emphysema arising in a situation like your fellow worker describes. She must be happy explaining her condition the way she does. Let her be happy. It's her way of coping with the illness. She also must be smart enough to know that smoking is harming her greatly, regardless of her emphysema cause. ANSWER: I imagine the procedure was instituted so the nurse can change your dose of Coumadin right away if the blood tests indicate that your blood is too thin or too thick. Coumadin is an anticoagulant that stops clots from forming; it really does thin blood. The medicine is prescribed when a person has a condition where clots form and might cause a stroke. Atrial fibrillation is such a condition. You can ask your doctor if you're a candidate for the new anticoagulant Pradaxa. With it, you don't need to have the same blood checks. DR. Keeping Hearts Healthy According to research from the University of Connecticut, funded by the California Table Grape Commission, eating grapes may help protect heart health in men with metabolic syndrome. In the study, men with metabolic syndrome who consumed grapes lowered their key risk
factors for heart disease. Bulgur Salad with Grapes and Kale Servings: 6
• 2 cups water • 1 cup bulgur Kosher salt • 1 cup pecan halves, toasted and roughly chopped • 2 cups seedless California grapes, halved • 2 cups packed kale or Swiss chard leaves, finely slivered • 1/2 cup Italian parsley, chopped • 1/4 cup scallions, thinly sliced • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 2 teaspoons lemon zest, finely grated • Pinch cayenne • Black pepper Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Stir in bulgur and 1/2 teaspoon salt and remove from heat. Cover and let stand 20 minutes or until most of water is absorbed. Drain well and press to extract any excess water. Let cool and stir in the remaining ingredients. Season well with salt and black pepper. Serve room temperature or chilled. Spicy Grape and Chicken Lettuce Cups Servings: 4 as an entrÈe or 8 as an appetizer
Grilled Antipasto Skewers Yield: 12 skewers
• 24 shrimp (31-40 size), peeled and deveined • 3/4 pound red or black California seedless grapes • 1 8-ounce jar cocktail onions • 3 ounces prosciutto, each piece sliced into long ribbons
Marinade: • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped • 1/4 teaspoon salt • Black pepper, freshly ground • 4 tablespoons olive oil Soak long bamboo skewers in water for at least 5 minutes. Thread skewers with 2 shrimp, 6 grapes and 2 onions, with a ribbon of prosciutto winding throughout. Place the finished skewers in shallow dish or plate. To make marinade, whisk together garlic, vinegar, rosemary, salt and pepper and gradually add the oil. Evenly dab on half of marinade with a brush. Let marinate in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes and then brush with remaining marinade. Grill on a hot fire for 2 minutes per side. Serve immediately. • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 1 tablespoon water • 3/4 cup low sodium chicken broth • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • 3 to 5 teaspoons Asian chili paste with garlic • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce • 1 tablespoon peanut or vegetable oil • 6 cloves garlic, minced • 3 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced • 1 1/2 pounds ground chicken breast • 1 1/2 cups halved green California seedless grapes • 3/4 cup green onions, thinly sliced • 1 head iceberg lettuce, cut in half and separated into leaves • 1/4 cup cilantro, coarsely chopped • 1 1/2 cups julienne cucumber In small bowl, combine cornstarch and water. Add chicken broth, sugar, vinegar, chili paste and soy sauce. Set aside. Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add garlic and ginger; sautÈ for 30 seconds. Add chicken and cook until no longer pink, about 5 to 8 minutes. Add grapes and green onions; sautÈ for 30 seconds. Restir the sauce mixture and pour into skillet. Stir until thickened, about 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Place chicken mixture in lettuce leaves; garnish with cilantro and cucumber. Serve open or roll up if desired. ‘Walking Onions’ are tasty and fun to grow spicy, stronger onion taste than the larger underground onions. They are delicious pickled and the young, green stalks without the bulbils are wonderful for soups and salads or used as chives. Some varieties will also form scallion-like bulbs at the base of the plant that can be eaten as well. Top-set onions will last several months in storage. Walking Onions are produce bulbils during the heat of summer and can be harvested near the end of August when they are about one-half to one inch in diameter. Pinch off just the top-sets and let the plant produce scallions at the base that can be harvested in the fall. If you leave the bulbils on and they haven’t fallen over, they will start to grow another green stalk and produce more bulbils creating a chain of green stocks and bulbils clusters. Their unusual growth is fun to watch as they twist

Top-set onions, Egyptian onions, tree onions, or walking onions are various names used to describe Allium cepa L., a family of very hardy perennial topsetting onions. Instead of producing bulbs in the ground they produce small bulbs called bulbils on the end of their stalks where a normal onion would have flowers. As the bulbils grow and the weight increases, the stalks with the bulbils attached, fall to the ground. If the ground is moist the bulbs will start putting down roots and because of this characteristic they are sometimes referred to as a walking onion. The stalks grow twisted and look like branches which are why they are also referred to as a tree onion. Walking Onions can spread throughout your garden. If you leave at least one top-set bulbils to “walk,” the plant will continue to multiply and keep you supplied with onions for a lifetime. They can produce 50 or more bulbils a year. The bulbils have a

They have a strong, spicy taste. and turn and sometimes will entangle with each other, then fall to the ground and start “walking.” Walking Onions are hardy in all zones of the United States and will grow in almost any well-drained soil however; the bulb and scallions will be larger if grown in a rich sandy loam. The plant grows to
approximately two feet high in and is winter hardy. It’s not necessary to dig them up like underground onions. PICKLED ONIONS 1 1/2 lb. pearl onions, peeled 2 tbsp. pickling salt 1 1/2 c. white vinegar 1/3 c. sugar 1 tsp. pickling spices Drop onions in boiling

water to cover. Boil 3 minutes; drain. Place in cold water. Combine 2 cups water and pickling salt; pour over onions. Let stand 12 hours. Drain; rinse thoroughly. Combine vinegar, sugar and pickling spice; bring to boiling. Pack onions in hot jars, leaving 1/2 inch head space. Cover with pickling

Have you ever been turned down for a credit card and wondered why? Or gotten approved for a car loan or mortgage but suddenly the interest rate and fees are much higher than in the initial quote? There are many legitimate reasons why people are denied credit — insufficient income or a poor track record on past loan repayments, for example. But sometimes people are denied credit because of discriminatory lending practices — which are not always easy to spot. Fortunately numerous federal and state laws prohibit lenders from discriminating in any part of a credit transaction on the basis of many personal characteristics. What's more, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and other governmental agencies provide avenues for filing complaints if you feel you've been discriminated against. And, offending lenders face lawsuits and stiff penalties if found to be discriminatory. Under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) it's illegal for creditors to discriminate against credit applicants based on their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status or age, because they receive income from a public assistance program, or because they have in good faith exercised any right under the Consumer Credit Protection Act. Based on those criteria, lenders cannot: • Refuse you credit if you qualify for it; • Discourage you from applying for credit; • Offer you credit on terms that are less favorable than those offered to someone with similar qualifications; or • Close your account. Another federal law, the Fair Housing Act (FHA), prohibits discrimination by direct providers of housing, such as landlords, real estate companies, municipalities, banks or other lending institutions and homeowner's insurance companies. Warning signs. Red flags that may indicate credit discrimination include: • You are treated differently in person than on the phone. • You are discouraged from applying for credit. • You hear the lender make negative comments about race, national origin, sex, or other protected groups. • You are refused credit even though you qualify for it. • You are offered credit with a higher rate than what you applied for, even though you qualify for the lower rate.

It’s important to know protections against discrimination when applying for credit. • You are denied credit, but not given a reason why or told how to find out why. • Your deal sounds too good to be true. • You feel pushed or pressured to sign. If you believe a lender has discriminated against you for any reason, you can submit a complaint to the CFPB (consumerfinance.gov/complaint), which will review and route your complaint to the lender and work on your behalf to get a response. Once your complaint is logged, you will receive email updates and can log in to monitor the status of your complaint. To better protect yourself against credit discrimination — or from pursuing credit products that aren't right for you: • Learn about the various features and downsides of the credit product you want. Research current interest rates and compare products from several lenders. • Creditors make decisions based on your credit history, so make sure there are no mistakes or missing items in your credit reports. • Be sure you understand the rates and fees you'll pay over the long run and ask whether they could change in the future. If a creditor doesn't want to answer your questions, this could be a bad sign. • Don't let lenders make you feel rushed or unnecessarily delay action on your application. On Saturday, July 27, the Tehachapi Museum, 310 S. Green St., will hold its annual “Step Back in Time to Old Tehachapi.� Activities include demonstrations of old fashioned crafts like butter churning, corn shucking, spinning, tatting, crocheting, woodcarving and other crafts that are becoming a lost art. In the Museum you can see well-worn household items actually used in the 1800s. This will be the first year that Ernie Fong, longtime Tehachapi Heritage League member who passed away last year, will not be there to show children how to make a jumping frog from paper. Chila Caldera will teach this craft to visitors and will be demonstrating other origami projects. Del Troy will be demonstrating quilting. Jon Hammond will be setting up a portable forge to demonstrate blacksmithing, which was a crucial skill for a rural area such as Tehachapi. A special feature will be the appearance of a camel from Windswept Ranch. There was a prehistoric breed of camels in the Tehachapi area and you can see a fossil of that breed’s footprint in the Museum, as well as a bone from a prehistoric Wooly Mammoth found in Tehachapi. The Errea House will be open, showcasing a 1900 to 1939 rural lifestyle. At the Museum a photo exhibit of vintage photos continues. The Kawaiisu Exhibit in the Milano Gallery gives an insight into the local Native American tribe that originally inhabited the area. Stroll around Downtown Tehachapi and look at the interesting old homes and visit the Tehachapi Depot and Railroad Museum to get a complete picture of Tehachapi’s past. There is no charge for admission to the museums and all the craft demonstrations are free. The event is from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Call the museum at 822-8152 for more information.

First and foremost, The Cat House is a research facility devoted to furthering the breeding and repopulating of endangered species of large cats, but the facility also operates as a zoo, allowing visitors face-to face access with some of the rarest animals on the planet. Guests can spend the day visiting over 70 tigers, jaguars, ocelots, and Amur leopards, housed in large, natural habitats. As a special treat, The Cat House also hosts special twilight
events in spring, summer and fall, offering guests the opportunity to view the cats during their more active hours. These events begin at 5 p.m., and run until dark, with the next one scheduled for Sept. 21. The price for the twilight events is $20. The Cat House is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. except for Wednesdays when it is closed to the public. Regular admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for children 3-12. 7-toed Max has – yes - 7 toes on his front paws, which makes his paws HUGE like Mittens. He’s approximately 8 months old and is shy at first, then warms up and is very sweet. He’s a beautiful Tuxedo but his paws make him extra special—he’ll be the talk of the neighborhood. A trip to the vet revealed that Max has TMJ just like humans. This causes him some discomfort from time to time but there isn’t anything that can be done for it. Because of this Max needs good quality wet foot as kibble, unless it is softened, can be difficult for him to eat. His eating habits need to be monitored.
