PRCA rodeo during Mountain Festival celebrates 50 years of local rodeo BY DONNETTE HADDAD CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The Benz "Bad Bulls" Bull Riding Tour, held July 4, at the Tehachapi Event Center and Rodeo Grounds, was a smashing success. Rough and tough cowboys came from all over the state to ride the some "bad bulls." These bulls could only be described as live locomotives on hooves, with horns, fury and major attitude. But the cowboys hopped on, and made those eight-second rides a memorable experience for rodeo fans. Coming up Aug. 16 and 17 is the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Rodeo. This year the Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo Association celebrates 50 years of rodeo. The Friday rodeo starts at 7 p.m. and the Saturday night rodeo starts at 6. Ride ‘em, cowgirl Gracing the Grand Opening of the Mountain Festival Rodeo will be the Dust N’ Diamonds Equestrian Drill Team, a competitive and exhibition equestrian drill team. The Tehachapi Rodeo Arena and Event Center will be full of action on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16 and 17. Equestrian Drill Team was founded in 1992 and is composed of ladies here in the Tehachapi area. They hold the honor of being the 2005 Mixed Division Champions in the Western State Equestrian Drill Team Association. The team continues to excite and entertain rodeo fans dressed in their trademark turquoise and silver sequins with matching leather chaps and tack. The members create an almost dance-like effect on

horseback as they perform intricate, choreographed precision drill maneuvers to music. The 12-member team trains for many hours to hone the intricate riding patterns they use to dazzle the crowds under the leadership of Drill Master Shawna Stillman, practicing once a week at McCarthy's in Bealville. When bull-riding competitions began to use illtempered Brahma bulls in the 1920s, the need for a person to distract the bull from fallen riders fell to the rodeo clown. The use of a barrel for protection began during

the 1930s when a rodeo clown named Jasbo Fulkerson began to use a wooden barrel with a solid bottom. It is the barrel man who generally provides comic relief in today’s rodeos. For that reason, some rodeo fans still think of a barrel man as the rodeo clown. Our barrel man, Nate Reed is a crowd favorite. Nate has been involved in rodeo for 17 years, first as a

bull rider and then a bullfighter before a 2009 leg injury changed things and he became a PRCA barrel man. In the arena with the barrel man are the bullfighters. The primary job of the bullfighter is to protect a fallen rider from the bull by distracting the bull, and providing an alternative target for the bull to attack. These individuals expose themselves to great danger in order to protect the cowboy. They wear bright, loose-fitting clothes that are designed to tear away, with protective gear fitted underneath. The bullfighters enter the rodeo arena on foot before the bull is released from the bucking chute, and stand

This year’s bullfighters are Bud Bently of Sandy Valley, Nev., and Rick Mofatt of Oakdale. These bullfighters require speed, agility, and the ability to anticipate a bull's next move. Working closely with very large, very powerful animals, bullfighters are often injured seriously. ‘Homesick Elephant’ at Fiddlers Aug. 23

The Summit Singers have announced the selection of Scott Walter as director for the 2013-2014 Season. Walter has a strong background in music, and will bring expertise and energy to the group. He has a degree in Elementary Education and Music from Concordia University in Nebraska. Walter began singing in a boy’s choir at the age of eight and has sung in local, state and national honors choruses in both high school and college. He studied voice under Roger Quadhamer of El Camino College, Jeffrey Foote from University of Michigan and William Galen of University of Southern California. Walter also trained in choral conducting under Jane Hardister of El Camino College, David Thorsen at California State University, Fullerton, and David Held at Concordia University. He has had the privilege of performing under some of the most respected choral conductors in the United States, including Paul Sala-

munovich, director emeritus of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Since graduating from the university in 1983, Walter has served as director of music, choirs and handbells for a host of Lutheran congregations in California and Minnesota, among them Grace Lutheran Church of Lancaster, First Lutheran Church of Palmdale and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Tehachapi, where he currently serves as Chancel Choir Director. He has taught elementary school in Lancaster and has lived in the High Desert region since 1988. He currently resides in Bear Valley Springs. Walter is a current member of the Summit Singers and follows in the footsteps of founding director Chick Gamble and more recent directors Ken Williams and Lon Salzman. In a story published online in 2006, a homesick elephant named Ruby was about to “pack her trunk and move to Los Angeles.” At the same time, Sara and Kevin Kelly had just moved from Philadelphia to LA where Kevin had a new job teaching composition in the music department of Los Angeles City College. When they saw the headline for Ruby’s story, they knew that “Homesick Elephant” was the perfect name for their vocal act. Although accompanied mostly by a single guitar, the music of this husband and wife duo is not your usual folk fare. The original songs are quirky and whimsical, yet crafted with the skill of an accomplished composer and poet. (What to rhyme with Connecticut? Why, etiquette, of course!) Imagine Frank Zappa and the Beatles together on an Irish vaudeville stage! Homesick Elephant will bring that kind of slightly off-kilter magic to the Fiddlers Crossing stage on Friday, Aug. 23.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have herpes. I am a 28year-old woman who never previously had a venereal disease. I am shocked to have one now. I have always been careful about choosing my male partners. I can't believe this has happened to me. Will this affect my chances of having children? What do I do about having sexual relations? — M.N. ANSWER: You have to put herpes infection in perspective. Many people are infected. It's estimated that 50 million Americans have the virus. All of them are free to marry and have children. As for sexual relations, be honest with your partners about having been infected. You should not have relations when you have a recurrent outbreak. Recurrences lessen in frequency with the passage of time. It still is possible to transmit the virus without a visible outbreak, but condom use then lessens the

probability of passing the virus to others. The herpes virus comes in two varieties: herpes simplex virus type 1, HSV-1; and herpes simplex virus type 2, HSV-2. HSV-1 is responsible for cold sores (fever blisters). HSV-2 is the cause of genital infections. However, either virus can lead to genital infections (and cold sores). HSV-1 is becoming a more frequent cause of genital infections. Skin-to-skin contact is the method of transmission. A first outbreak of genital herpes may cause fever, headache, muscle pain, pain on urination and enlargement of groin lymph nodes. In men, an outbreak of small blisters appears on the penis. In women, the same happens in the vagina and on the external genitals. The blisters turn into sores. The sores heal in one to two weeks. Some infected people never have any visible manifestations of infection, but they are able to transmit the virus. About onethird of people never expe-

rience a recurrence. Another third have less than three outbreaks a year. The final third have more than three yearly outbreaks. People can spread the virus even when there are no obvious signs of infection. Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir) and valacyclovir (Valtrex) shorten an outbreak. If recurrences are frequent, these medicines can be used on a daily basis to suppress them. The booklet on herpes clarifies its mysteries. Lunch How to make healthy school lunches for kids METRO Confrontations focusing on diet between children and parents have been around seemingly since the beginning of time. Many children start off as cooperative eaters, anxious to try different types of foods. As they get older, the number of foods they're apt to eat diminishes, which can make choosing healthy items for lunches and dinners more difficult. It also can make packing lunches for school more challenging. Many initiatives have attempted to improve the quality of school lunches provided by school cafeterias. Government regulations to reduce the amount of fat and sodium in these lunches, and to introduce more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are one such initiative. Parents of students who prefer to bring their own lunches from home may be left wondering how they can create healthy lunches their kids will eat. Considering school lunches must compete with far less healthy yet widely available alternatives, parents will need to be creative in their creation of homemade lunches. Here are some ideas to get you started. • Purchase a new lunch container. There are many different new and innovative lunch containers that can make separating school lunches easy. Few kids want to dig into a brown paper sack and pull out something that has been so squashed it's unrecognizable. Partitioned lunch boxes enable you to pack different items together where they can be stored separately. The divisions also help you remember to include foods from the basic food groups, such as a fruit, vegetable, protein, starch and dairy item. • Have your child make a list of his or her favorite foods. Once

the list has been made, see how you can make the foods healthier. For example, if chicken nuggets make the list, prepare your own nuggets with white meat chunks that are baked, not fried. If there are a number of bread items, see if you can substitute whole grain breads instead of white, bleached varieties. • Get creative. Children may not be inclined to eat loose pieces of fruit. But if the fruit is stuck on skewers or served with a low-fat dipping sauce or caramel, it may look more appealing. Look to "mini" foods, which tend to be more fun as well. Little sandwiches and little burgers may present an optical illusion, where kids think they're eating only a small amount, but actually it's a full serving. • Hide healthy foods within others. There are entire recipe books that teach you how to mix fruits and vegetables into desserts to increase nutritive value. Everything from spinach to tofu to beets have been included in items like cake, cookies and brownies. So if kids are reticent to dig into their greens, try a clever hiding method. • Cut foods into fun shapes. Kids may be more inclined to eat a turkey and cheese sandwich if it's cut into star shapes or their favorite cartoon characters. When budgeting for back-to-school expenses, parents generally include routine fare like clothes, school supplies and maybe a new backpack. But if your kids participate in extracurricular activities, whether it's sports, music lessons or art classes, you could be on the hook for hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars in additional expenses throughout the year if you're not careful. As parents, we hesitate to stifle our children's athletic and creative urges, especially when it can be so difficult to drag them away from their iPods and Xboxes. But sometimes you've just got to step back, weigh the different options available and decide what you can afford without upsetting your other financial goals and responsibilities.

Children’s sports and other interests can be expensive. Here are some ideas for keeping them financially manageable. You'll face tough questions like, "Is it better for my child's future to spend $500 on a soccer day camp he'll really enjoy or to invest the money in a 529 College Savings Plan?" Common Purslane (Portulaca olearacea), also known as Duckweed, Fatweed, Pigweed, Little Hogweed, or Pursley is an annual succulent herb of the Portulacaceae family. It has a cluster of oblong, green leaves and a smooth stem that trails along the ground. The flowers tucked between the branches, are yellow, less than a quarterinch wide, with five petals, blooming mid summer to fall. The seed capsule is filled with tiny, round, black seeds. Young plants are usually green and as the plant matures it takes on a reddish tint. Both the stem and the leaves are thick and juicy. Purslane germinates when soil temperatures reach about 60 degrees F. The plant has a taproot with fibrous secondary roots and is able to tolerate poor, hard soils and is drought tolerant. The edible succulent is considered a weed to some gardeners, but to others it is a tasty herb that is actually good for you. It’s high in vitamin E and essential omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Purslane provides six times

Purslane is seen by many as a weed, but it is also a tasty and nutritious herb. more vitamin E than spinach and seven times more beta carotene than carrots. It’s also rich in magnesium, riboflavin, potassium and phosphorus. One cup of cooked purslane has 25 milligrams of vitamin C. Harvest this delightful edible herbal “weed” in the morning or evening when they are juiciest. The lemon peppery flavored herb can be used raw in salads or sautéed alone or mixed in vegetable dishes. It can also be lightly steamed or stir-fried. Purslane’s high level of pectin thickens soups and stews.

If you wish to eradicate purslane you can, of course, hand pull it. Hand pulling is easiest when the soil is wet. You can also use a pre-emergent herbicide, but do so before the plant set seeds. Purslane-Potato Salad 6 medium potatoes, sliced and cooked 2 cups purslane, chopped 4 scallions, sliced 1 celery stalk, sliced 1 cup mayonnaise Mix together all ingredients. Serve chilled.
