Dear Friends, Envision a large banquet table laden with delicacies of all types of foods for all ages. The display includes all foodstuffs, from fine wine and caviar for adults to finger foods and french fries for the kids. Food is in abundance and the kitchen staff is prepared to serve even more. The people are coming and the word is out that all are welcome. The table stands secure on its legs. Now envision Chabad at Stony Brook. Its programs and services are available for the entire community. Educational classes for all ages include JLI – The Jewish Learning Institute for adults, Bar and Bat Mitzvah clubs, Hebrew School and Torah Tots for the little ones. The Holidays are brought alive through the exciting programs of the Living Legacy Department. Chabad creates community through the Woman’s Club, Men’s Club, C-Teens. Recreation at Chabad includes Camp Gan Israel summer and winter camps and the annual community-wide Jewish Festival on the beach. Children with special needs are attended to through the much acclaimed Friendship Circle and of course there’s the Synagogue with all affiliated Rabbinical services. All this and more is available at Chabad at Stony Brook, membership free but… Chabad too only stands secure when set on 3 strong legs. The first leg is the Rebbe whose blessings and directives are felt daily, still motivating the thrust to reach every Jew, whether affiliated or not and make Judaism both available and welcoming. The second leg is the wonderful highly qualified staff dispensing classes and programs which is distinctly caring and inspiring. The third leg which secures the solid footing of the organization is the finances. This leg is provided by the voluntary annual membership people choose to give, fees paid per program, and then there’s you. Your gift supports that which others cannot afford. Infrastructure, expansion and vision to do more are supported by your gifts and the gifts of equally generous donors. On behalf of the entire staff and community, thank you for your partnership. Within your gift lays the promise of Jewish continuity.

2014 HIGHLIGHTS
OUR MAN IN WASHINGTON
Lee Zeldin, sole Jewish Republican in the House, represents Suffolk County Over the years, Chabad at Stony Brook developed a close relationship with local politician Lee Zeldin, a strong advocate of Israel and Jewish values. Last year, Mr. Zeldin was elected as the only Jewish Republican in the US House of Representatives. Judaism is an important part of Mr. Zeldin’s life, and he continuously turned to his spiritual roots for comfort and support. Several times during his recent campaign he wrapped tefillin and prayed with Rabbi Motti Grossbaum. Rabbis Chaim and Motti Grossbaum traveled to Washington, D.C., where they
presented Mr. Zeldin with a leatherbound edition of the Torah (Bible) with the Rebbe’s commentaries. This same Bible was later used at Mr. Zeldin’s official swearing-in ceremony, which they attended, and after which they visited his
office to install mezuzas. The Stony Brook community wishes Lee Zeldin much strength and success in his important new position, which is a source of pride and inspiration for Jews around the country.
STONY BROOK LOVES ISRAEL
Rally by Chabad in support of Israel and the IDF a huge draw Last summer, at the height of the Gaza conflict, Chabad at Stony Brook organized a Pro-Israel Rally to support our people and the IDF troops. Hundreds of people from all walks of life came out to show their support and share a single message: “Israel has been fighting for its stability, its security and its country for a very long time, and this struggle continues today. We must stand with Israel.” Participants donated items and packed care packages which were happily received by IDF soldiers on the front line.

HOLOCAUST EVENT

Chabad hosts Anne Frank’s stepsister
Record-breaking event participation
As the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII approached, Chabad at Stony Brook cohosted (together with Chabad of Mid-Suffolk and the Chai Center in Dix Hills) an historic sold out lecture by Eva Schloss, the childhood friend and stepsister of Anne Frank. Schloss, 85, is the author of several holocaust-related books, including Eva’s Story and The Promise. She traveled from London for the occasion, and provided and stirring message in remembrance of Kristalnacht and Holocaust victims. Her message is that, no matter what, one shouldn’t lose hope, because only a life imbued with hope and trust and faith is a truly happy life.
Several of Chabad at Stony Brook’s signature community-wide events, including Living Legacy events, High Holiday Services, and the ever-popular Jewish Summer Festival, attracted record crowds this past year. “I think it was a combination of things,” relates Rabbi Chaim Grossbaum in explaining the dramatic rise in turnout. “On the one hand, people are seeking meaning and spirituality in their lives now more than ever, especially for ways to celebrate as a family. At the same time, there were some tension for our people in Israel around the world, which tends to being people together more.”
SOMETHING FOR YOU?
A TRUE LIVING LEGACY
Chabad launches three new clubs
Survivor lights Chanukah menorah
Three exciting new clubs were launched last year by Chabad at Stony Brook. The Kosher Culinary Club, the Chabad Men’s Club and CTeen Stony Brook, which is part of the fastest growing Jewish teen network in the world. “We’re always looking for ways to create diverse and engaging programs,” explains Mrs. Chaya Grossbaum, director of the Kosher Culinary Club. “One way to is create specialized groups that cater to specific demographics and interests.” We hope this news is a harbinger of more good things to come as Chabad prepares to break ground on its expansive new center in the coming months, which will facilitate an increased diversity of programs.
The annual “Adult Chanukah Social,” part of Chabad’s Living Legacy program, is always a special event. But this year the Chanukah social had a special poignancy and power, verifying the theme of Chanukah that “a little light pushes away great darkness.” Local resident and Auschwitz survivor Ruth Minsky Sender was honored with lighting the first candle of the menorah. For Ruth, and indeed for all those attending, this was a candle of hope, a candle of freedom, a candle for the future. When she shared her memories of lighting the menorah while hiding from the Nazis, everyone realized that not only were they in the presence of someone special, but also that the story of Chanukah - a story of self-sacrifice, of faith, of perseverance and survival - is still relevant today.
