To engage our youth, we have to compete with MTV, Reality TV, video games, Youtube and Facebook. As boring and stiff as Hebrew School seemed to our generation when we were growing up, much of today’s youth see it as outright ludicrous. Tzivos Hashem’s programs need to demonstrate that Judaism is at least as exciting and relevant as popular culture. They need to be well thought out, and well funded. Tzivos Hashem offers something unique that today’s youth severely lack

crave:

Meaningful, face-to-face time with mentors and peers, and a real sense of community.

The State of Jewish Education In the Greater Toronto Area, only 34% of Jewish children attend Jewish Day School. Another 33% receive some kind

Jewish education. That means that one third of Jewish children in the GTA receive no Jewish education whatsoever! And, unfortunately, that number is steadily growing.

Tzivos Hashem is at the forefront in creating exciting programs that really speak to our students. The positive feedback we get from students and teachers after their events indicates that it is an experience that meets the educational requirements of the teachers and the fun quotient of the students: Students came back raving about your program yesterday. Thank you so much for such a fine production. — Charlotte, Principal The event was a great success. Thanks so much for your contribution. Let’s try another one next year. — James, School Board Trustee Thank -you very much. All of our students had a great time. — Mike, Teacher That was awesome! When are we going to do something like this again. — Jonathan, Student

The fact that our youth are disaffected and rapidly assimilating is tragic. We have a long and glorious chain as a people going back 3,000 years — a heritage that so clearly needs to be preserved and strengthened, both for ourselves and for humanity as a whole. Several studies across the US and

Canada have shown that Jewish education is the only guaranteed way to positively impact Jewish identity. Something needs to be done, especially for the thousands of children at greater risk – the ones who receive no formal Jewish education. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, founded Tzivos Hashem in 1980 to help cultivate the potential and Jewish identity of Jewish children everywhere by providing programs and services to engage Jewish youth.

The Rebbe waves to children as they pass by during the annual Lag BaOmer Children’s Parade in Crown Heights.

As a spiritual master, the Rebbe appreciated the unique power of children. As a visionary leader, he recognized that children are critical for the future of the Jewish people, and its present. And the Rebbe lead by example, dedicating countless hours to address children’s issues and speak directly to children at massive rallies attended by thousands.

Our Mission

There are currently over 50,000 Jewish children in the GTA. Our ultimate goal is to reach out to every single one of them, regardless of affiliation, and imbue them with Jewish awareness, identity and pride. Our primary focus is on the 17,000 children who are not receiving any Jewish education. The most effective learning is done when children do not identify the experience as education per se. Our programs are informal, and therefore high impact. They are engaging, and encourage children to appreciate and understand their Jewish heritage hands on. For children who already receive a Jewish education, Tzivos Hashem’s programs enhance their experience by making it more exciting, accessible, and memorable. But our greatest strength is that our reach extends to public schools, malls, and other places where we touch the lives of Jewish children who would otherwise not receive any exposure to Jewish education or culture. Tzivos Hashem Canada is an affiliate of this international organization, and part of the Chabad Lubavitch movement.

Educational Programs

Education is a life-long journey, but the values and skills imparted to children in their formative years have the most profound, lasting impact. Our educational programs are carefully crafted to awaken the inner potential of each individual child, and give them the knowledge and tools they need to live a meaningful, Jewish life. •

Pre-School with a focus on drama, art and music, we lay the foundation for children’s future development as young adults and as Jews with a strong sense of Jewish identity.

Jewish Youth Clubs & Scouts give children the opportunity to meet other Jewish children in their age group, and to experience Jewish life through fun and engaging outdoor activities.

Publications & Media, including a seasonal children’s magazine, emails, newsletters, and our website, as well as informational literature, play an important role in keeping people connected in the information age.

NOTE: Torah 4 Teens, launched by Tzivos Hashem in 2004 is an accredited after school program, running for 3 hours a week in several locations throughout the GTA. Public school students learn about and experience their Jewishness and earn High School credits. In 2008 T4T took on a life of its own and now operates independently.

TZIVOS HASHEM CANADA

Tzivos Hashem is embarking on an ambitious project to build a centre for Jewish children — the first of its kind in Canada. The centre will house a Children’s Museum, modeled after a highly successful project in New York, as well as facilities for Tzivos Hashem’s programs and events. It will also provide us with the space we need to expand our programs, and offer a new array of exciting experiences for children and families.
