ART FOR AFRICA CHRISTMAS AUCTION

ART FOR AFRICA •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Art for Africa is annual art auction held in Bristol in aid of Temwa. This year we are also doing an online Art for Africa: Christmas Auction. Temwa is a Bristol based charity working in northern Malawi where 40% of the population live on less than £1 a day, 16% are HIV-positive and one in three people struggle to feed themselves each day. Artwork is contributed to Art for Africa by some of the UK’s finest urban and contemporary artists, alongside budding African artists from Malawi. Our first art auction was held at the Tobacco Factory in August 2003, and since then the event has gone from strength to strength. Our art auctions raise essential funds to sustain our mission: to develop self-sufficient communities by supporting projects in education, health, agriculture and forestry, and microfinance. We are continuing our annual live art events but wanted to do something special this winter and give you the opportunity to buy the artwork online and in time for Christmas Day. We are so grateful for the generous support of the incredibly talented artists, who have donated their time, talent and skill to this online auction. Thank you.
BUY A CHRISTMAS PRESENT THAT WILL LAST. JOIN OUR ONLINE AUCTION, BIDDING HAS NEVER BEEN SO SIMPLE...

TEMWA •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Temwa works in the remote Nkhata Bay North area of Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. The communities face regular food shortages and floods, high rates of HIV and AIDs, limited education or employment opportunities, and poor healthcare. Temwa works in partnership with local people to run interlinked projects in Sustainable Forestry, Agriculture, Health and Education. Our work gives households the resources and skills they need to support themselves long-term. We’ve been working with isolated communities in Malawi since 2004. In that time… • 1 million trees have been planted, reducing soil erosion, flooding & displacement. • 25,000 people have been tested for HIV with Mobile Counselling and Testing, helping local people reduce the disease’s spread. • 5,000 local farmers have been trained to grow resilient vegetable crops reducing hunger and malnutrition. • Literacy rates have improved through primary education, use of our community library, and school bursaries. • Over 1,100 entrepreneurs have thriving businesses enabled by our start-up loans - boosting income and the local economy.
RUTH’S STORY
Many children in Nkhata Bay North grow up orphaned, due to the heartbreaking reality of HIV and AIDS. Incredible, caring women in the community have stepped up. Ruth joined Temwa’s agricultural programme to provide for her own four children, her elderly mother and two orphans. Ruth worked hard in the training and was chosen to grow produce for other families too. She is making great sales from her vegetables and continues to support orphans, pay for her children’s schooling and has built a holiday home business.

Her work focusses on the cosmic and mythical, created through carefully planned photographic images using long exposure and time-lapse techniques. One of the first UK artists to use a logo in place of a tag, Sickboy's iconic red and yellow temple and ‘Save The Youth’ slogan appear on walls and wheelie bins worldwide. The multi-disciplinary artist has built one of the largest bodies of street art works to date, being tipped by the leading financial press as one of the movement's most bankable artists. Formally trained at art school, the artist's current practice includes interactive installation, abstract narrative painting, film and light sculpture, audience participation and public intervention, with appearances in Banksy's Oscar-nominated ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ and 2008's ‘Stay Free’ public installation staged outside the Tate Modern earning him undisputed global recognition.

Lee is an expressive artist not afraid to tackle the tortured expression and dramatic scenes sinking into the depths of the human psyche. His art is portrayed with distortion, with emotion and passion, and has been exhibited widely across the UK.
LOT NUMBER: 7 Artist: Hemper Title: If you worry, you die. If you don't worry, you die. So don't worry. Dimensions: 50.5cm x 40.5cm Medium: Spraypaint on Canvas Estimated value: £100 Hemper began writing graffiti in London, in the early nineties. While currently based in Bristol, Hemper’s work has been exhibited and is visible in cities throughout Europe and the USA. Largely self-taught, he is most widely recognised for painting letters on walls. However, his work on canvas reveals a different side to his creativity; including characters and abstraction. "I’ve written graffiti for 25 years but on my 40th birthday I decided to stop. I’ve donated all my remaining paintings to Temwa because I think it’s a great cause. Maybe I will start painting landscapes or something in the future, who knows.’
LOT NUMBER: 8 Artist: Paul McGowan Title: Colossus Dimensions: 85cm x 85cm Medium: Screenprint Estimated value: £3000-£4000 Paul McGowan’s work has often created controversy and has been regularly featured in the press all around the world, such as The Guardian, The Times, The Evening Standard, Creative Review, Arena Magazine, the BBC and Sky News. He established himself as a fashion designer at a young age; when he was 20 he became the youngest designer to ever sell a collection to fashion house Browns, and went on to work for a variety of well-known fashion industry names, including Gianni Versace. During his formative years at Art School, he had his first exhibition in St Ives, and won the Tate Magazine Award. Since this time he has continued to develop a strong career for his distinctive and often political - artworks, recognised locally in 2008 when he was appointed as artist in residence at the Eden Project. His work is collected across the world and he is a serial collaborator, often producing works released under different identities.

He first studied Graphic Design, and following a short course at St Ives School of Art he applied to the University of West of England (UWE) to study Fine Art. It was here he was awarded the “Innes Wilken Art in Architecture” prize. Since gaining his BA, Giles has continued to develop his innovative techniques and shrewd use of colours within his work. Painting and drawing have been integral to Giles’ life. Heavily influenced by the early 80s, Giles has long had an interest in comics and graphic novels and has been painting and doodling his entire life. As an artist, he currently produces 2D abstract work. His art is a means of self-expression and therapy, yet the resulting angst-ridden canvases are bright and lively in nature. The techniques are varied and now adopt an illustrative style in favour of the linear markings of his early works. The rough brush strokes, dribbles and smears are achieved with the use of acrylics, pens and spray cans.

Whilst money remains tight, complete autonomy is maintained without funding. All workers are volunteers and all money from the sale of china goes towards running, among other things, a well equipped painters’ yard which facilitates much of the extraordinary street art unique to the area.

Paris regularly participates in British music events. His work can easily be identified, with its unique combination of atmospheric colours, detailed and highly stylised line work and space age effects, especially cracks and shines.
LOT NUMBER: 20 Artist: Inkie Title: Firefly Dimensions: 59.4cm x 42cm Medium: High definition indigo art print on tinteretto textured paper Estimated value: £125 Inkie is one of the most prolific graffiti writers to emerge from the 80’s Bristol scene. LOT NUMBER: 21 Artist: Lokey Title: Roller Dimensions: 50.5cm x 40cm Medium: Spray paint, acrylic and paint pen on canvas Estimated value: £215 Lokey was born and raised in Bristol. His passion for Graffiti started in the mid 1980’s through a chance meeting in a local park, with some kids breakdancing who had returned from their holiday in America with hip-hop mix tapes and photographs of Graffiti. They told him he had to have a street name, a tag, and from that point on he was hooked. After playing about with a few other tags he became Lokey. He is the youngest veteran of the Bristol Graffiti Phenomenon, with over 20 years of experience in the once underground scene, which is now very much a part of the day to day lives of Bristolian people. His writing style has progressed over the years, from simple Bubble letters in the early days, through to Wildstyle and now the 3D lettering, that he is most well known for.
