As a 2nd year design student in Taiwan, I'm looking forward to studying abroad and expending my horizons. I think, design, especially industrial design, is not only serious but also extremegly fun. I have four design principlesďźšsimple, function, humanity, and detail. Simple depends on the saying "Less is more."; Function is the basis of a product; Humanity helps my work suitable for people. And, detail makes a work perfect.

The Eight

Given the theme of "Time", I redefined its meaningďźš Only when something special happened in one's life, so that time counts. And the thing turns out memory.

After viewing some samples and classifying them, I decided to give people mildness through my work. And memories make time meaningful and warm.

In my opinion, pictures represent memories, when CDs collect and save them. What time is it now is, actually, not very important. After several sketches, one of them was chose.

With Ai, I drew the real size clock. The shape would be made by CNC. At that time, I got whole picture in my brain.

Making 1:1 paper prototype to help me exchange different textures so that I can evaluate them.

Concerning color, tactile impression, and the processing method, wood become the best choice. And the ABS is the subsidiary.

After collecting all elements, I rebuilt the CD-ROM drive, lacquered the wood and combined each instruments.

Use markers and different kinds of white papers as color lumps, it's much easier to judge which combination is more smooth and fit to the atmosphere which my work was going to show.

The Eight | CD-ROM reinstallation

I bought an old CD-ROM player from a computer store. Since it was too big, I disassembled and reinstalled it. Moreover, I went to some 3C stores buying euipment and asked the clerks how to make it work again. I found the CD player was so old that it was going to vanish.

The Eight | final work conception

There are relatively important things or memories, so that “Time� exists. How to make these elapsing memories concrete? And how to let a common time worth to collect? With an old CD, we recollect the best family reunion time eight o'clock everyday.

"Y" represents you, as a user, while "M" is me, as a designer. I considered all details for the user, such as the angles of the pentagonal base. It's the most human-friendly design I 've made.

This time , I defined light as something functional and sticked to human life. At the same time, I collected samples.

The point of a lamp is its flexibility. But since I am a student, collecting instruments is the biggest challenge due to the lack of quantity. For this reason, I tried to make my work simple instead of adding complicated mechanism.

I asked people's habits, and then taked notes when they used their lamps. Also, I searched for several information online and found the smoothest light for human eyes.

Since each angle of the basement and tube should be greatly combined and turn out to be ergonomical, the lenght, width, as well as weight must be carefully considered. With mechanics and mathematics, I found few angle suitable, and the most stable one was chose.

LAST MODIFICATION

To male sure of each angle, I used form core and paper as the basement and tube respectively to make 1:1 model.

Thanks to five engineers from different factories who helped me solve producing problems, I learned some skills of communication and technical limitation.

The last process is to combine each part, including the tube with the LED, magnets, lampshed and still others, and clear up the surface of the metal. The magnets should be put separatedly into the tube.

An electric engineer who helped me connect all electric circuits.

A manager of factory in our department who even bought a series of equitments after I asked him for help!

An engineer of factory in department of mechanical engineering who helped me cut the hole of the tube which was three times nearly out of shape.

A manager of hardware store who tought me about the relationship between magnets and electric.

An engineer of 百仕翔 metal processing factory who has discussed with me about my basement for times.

Watsons

Watsons is Asia and Europe's largest health and beauty retail chain store. However, the private brand doesn't seem to be reliable and popular, and that's what we tried to change.

01 DEFINE PROBLEM By mind mapping, we composed each situation of the private brand of watsons and the mentality of costomers. And then we conclude the potential problems: packaging, selling and advertising.

02 SURVEYS 1. Questionnaires toward potential customers. 2. Telephone interview with the director of marketing and e-commerce of the Taiwan headquarter. We found there is one big flawthe company didn't ask the same design company to design their CIS, so they look all different. 3. Personastarget costomers as young women, housewives, and people lived in countryside. 4. Think-aloud protocol with three types of consumers.

03 PACKAGING REDESIGNING Thinking that the packaging should be similar so the whole products would look like a series, we redesigned the packaging, and take shampoo for example:

04 MODELMAKING AND STORYBOARDING After the CIS design, we made them into real models, and made a vedio to evaluate differences between the old and the new packaging.

POSTER To recall the original wishes of our brand from the public, we hold an exhibition after several years from the establishment of the company. And it's called I, Heartz Watch Conception Exhibition. Moreover, the conception exhibition expresses that people should love and treasure themselves whoever they are. With photos and words, we try to help all visitors determine their own value and be more confident.

There are two types of posters. One is with a young black woman's face, and the other is with an old yellow man's face. By showing the different periods, races and appearance of human lives, people are able to know that each difference between them counts, even though we have flaws.

I.

To exclude the chaos in visitors' minds, there shouldn't be too many colors. Also , as the brand's original conception, red dot represents human's heart. And, obviously, "I" reflect the deepest spirits in ourselves.
