THE JAMES HARRISON COLLECTION James Maurice Harrison (1892-1971) was one of the last of the great bird collectors who gathered large numbers of specimens in order to study moult patterns, distribution, geographical and colour variation within and between species. This type of ornithological enquiry reached its heyday in the late 19th and early 20th century (Mearns & Mearns, 1998). Extensive private ornithological collections were the historical basis for many regional accounts of local bird faunas and illustrated bird books. Later they formed the bedrock upon which modern field guides were developed. From the early 20th century, the focus of ornithological research shifted towards behavioural and ecological studies. Large private bird collections became obsolete and were subsumed into the expanding reference collections held by public museums. Harrison's own study collection included about 19,000 bird skins, an important scientific resource that is being transferred to a major public museum. His collection of mounted birds, including those that he shot and mounted himself, remained at his home in Kent after his death, largely unknown to later ornithologists. Practical considerations now require their dispersal by sale. Many of the old collectors were obsessed with albinos and other colour variants and this collection includes a few, with a special focus on hybrids and variants among ducks, but his ornithological activities evolved with the times. Although he enjoyed the challenges posed by bird collecting and wildfowling, from the 1950s he became a leading pioneer in developing the principles, now widely adopted, of adapting disused gravel pits to become valuable nature reserves for wildfowl and countless other species (Sedgwick et al. 1970). James Harrison was educated at Malvern College, but instead of joining the family shipping business he trained as a medical student at St. Thomas's Hospital in London.
Harrison, seen here in 1950, was dedicated to his taxidermy and ornithological work, pursued with great enthusiasm and energy, despite a busy life with many other responsibilities.
At the outbreak of the First World War he joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon probationer serving on destroyers in the Dover Patrol.
Stacks of cased birds were displayed, along with a selection of Harrison publications. Some cases were even attached to the back of the door.

Harrison’s collections occupied most of the space upstairs at Bowerwood House, his family home and Doctor’s Surgery.

One room had cabinets made of steel and plate glass installed, running from floor to ceiling. They contained a wide selection of British birds, including some bequeathed to him by fellow medics such as Dr. Arnold Macmillan of Rye and Dr. Norman Ticehurst (author of ‘The Birds of Kent’, 1905). Others were gifted to him, bought at auction, or mounted by himself. Many are labelled, indicating their source or taxidermist, but others were extracted from larger displays and set up separately on branches or polyurethane blocks to save space. A few cases have been retained by the family.
A few foreign specimens were included such as Sand Grouse shot by his son David in Iraq.
The collection includes some cases, like the geese and pelican seen here, that were formerly part of the collection of Thomas Parkin, the Founder of Hastings Museum. They bear his special labels.
He returned to St. Thomas’s in order to qualify and re-joined the Navy as a surgeon lieutenant. He served mainly in the eastern Mediterranean and was the only officer to survive the sinking of his ship, HM Monitor 28, at the Battle of Imbros in 1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for attending to the wounded and for bravery in swimming for over a mile towing a marine whose leg had been blown off. After the war he married and settled in 1920 as a general practitioner in Sevenoaks, Kent. He served the community well and was remembered as a kindly and courteous man, devoted to his profession and to his family. He retired in 1969 (aged 78).
in the structure, pathology and parasitic infections of birds, a more profound approach than mere bird shooting. However, his enthusiasm for wildfowling continued, providing ample opportunity to study the ducks and geese of the Thames and Medway estuaries and they are heavily represented in his collection (including a natural Goldeneye x Smew hybrid about which he wrote at length). He particularly stressed the importance of preserving specimens of hybrids, intersexes or sterile individuals resulting from hormonal imbalance. His detailed studies added considerably to knowledge of regional European movements and variation in the Jay, Chaffinch, Robin and other species.
Harrison’s youth was spent around Hastings, where St. Helens Wood provided him with many of his early specimens (at least 20 species). His medical background encouraged a deep interest
His first published paper appeared in 1918, followed by about 330 other publications. His major work, The Birds of Kent (Harrison, 1953), in two volumes, included detailed observations 3

Fraud was therefore implied and the local taxidermist George Bristow was identified as the likely perpetrator. This was a devastating shock to Harrison and led to his book Bristow and the Hastings Rarities Affair (Harrison, 1968). Since childhood he had been a friend and customer of George Bristow, whose father's business had operated from St. Leonards near Hastings since about 1850. Harrison’s spirited defence of Bristow, and the rare bird records, was undermined by freely admitting he did not understand the statistical arguments upon which the denunciation was based. His book was widely ignored despite the many detailed observations it contained. Sadly, a more balanced approach to the Hastings Rarities (Morris, 2021) was not published until 50 years after Harrison's death. He travelled widely, particularly in Greece, Israel, North Africa and Lapland. He was elected Chairman of the British Ornithologists Club in 1946 and Vice President of the British Ornithologists Union in 1952. He was a Scientific Fellow of the Zoological Society of London and a Fellow of the Linnean Society, Vice President of the Wildfowlers Association of Great Britain and Ireland, and also Vice President of the Kent Naturalist Trust. He established the Harrison Zoological Museum Trust, further developed by his two sons Jeffery and David to become an influential catalyst in the development of wildlife-based education and conservation projects overseas. Somehow, he found time to paint watercolours of his birds to illustrate books (see Harrison, 1942); a few were made into postcards.

of the distribution and occurrence of even the rarest of species. The veracity of many of those rarity records was later challenged (Nicholson and Ferguson Lees, 1962; Nelder, 1962), causing major controversy among ornithologists and crass publicity in the popular Press. It was proposed that there were so many rarities recorded from around Hastings within a 30-year period they could not all be genuine.
He became a personal friend of King Boris of Bulgaria, and they went on shooting expeditions together in the King’s chauffeur-driven car.

As a teenager, Harrison learned the art of taxidermy and some of his specimens dating from around 1910 show that he attained a remarkable proficiency at an early age. He signed his collection label on many of the specimens he prepared himself, often adding ‘fecit’ (Latin for ‘he made it’). He later wrote a small instruction book Bird Taxidermy (Harrison, 1964), issued posthumously as a second edition in 1976. Both were dedicated to Ernst Flükiger of Interlaken, described as “a Past Master of the Art”, whose taxidermy features in Harrison’s collection. The book cautioned against the casual collection of birds by “the dilettante who will tire of the pastime”, and called for The Protection of Birds Act (1954) to be properly respected.
Two of the second-floor rooms were lined with cabinets of uncased specimens.

Harrison was a keen wildfowler, and his collection includes a strong representation of British ducks and geese, including hybrids and seasonal variations in plumage. Most of these specimens were mounted by himself. Ducklings were sometimes included, as well as juveniles and fully adult birds.

most of Harrison’s birds remain in remarkably fine condition. James Harrison considered himself to be a modern collector in the tradition of the old sportsman-naturalists of the 19th-century who contributed so much to understanding the world's wildlife by collecting substantial samples of specimens for study when wildlife was more abundant than now. He offered a spirited defence of the old collectors that preceded him, noting especially their generous contribution to the nation's collections, obtained at considerable expense and often personal risk, in foreign countries. Their activities may be frowned upon today, in an era of depleted biodiversity, but ornithology owes them much and their contribution deserves fair recognition, including that made by Harrison himself.

During the 1960s, many of Harrison’s birds were removed from separate glass cases and remounted on polyurethane foam ‘rocks’. This is why old taxidermy is seen on relatively new material. It enabled better use of space in the large wall-mounted cabinets installed in the second-floor rooms at Bowerwood House. The birds were arranged in taxonomic groups, protected from sunlight and insect attack. He emphasised the curatorial responsibility involved with collecting specimens, wildlife was not to be wantonly destroyed. He urged never to kill anything without exercising a proper sense of respect for the specimen, but thanks to taxidermy “no bird found freshly dead need ever be wasted”. He insisted upon doing the job properly, that a bird skin should be a thing of beauty and aesthetically satisfying as well as conforming with the requirements of research. “Badly mounted birds are of course intolerable caricatures of birds in life, another result of ignorance of the bird in the field and of its anatomy”. A collection that was allowed to become faded beyond recognition or ravaged by insects constituted “nothing more or less than an exhibition of what I regard as criminal folly and neglect”. It is to his credit that a century after many of his birds were collected, and 50 years after his own death,

216 Taxidermy: A Cased Late Victorian Passenger Pigeon (†Ectopistes migratorius), a full mount adult male with head turning slightly to the right, perched upon a centrally mounted branch, amidst a natural setting of ferns, grasses and moss, above pebble covered groundwork, set against a watercolour painted evening sky back drop, enclosed within a typical period ebonised three-glass display case, 38.5cm by 14.5cm by 44cm, originally supplied in person to James Harrison by George Bristow, Taxidermist and Gunmaker, 15 Silchester Road, St Leonards-On-Sea, January 10th 1938, George Bristow was accused of selling foreign birds as British, taking advantage of wealthy collectors by charging excessively (see Nicholson & Ferguson-Lees, 1962; Morris 2021). James Harrison (1968, eg page 93) disputed this, offering evidence that Bristow did not maximise his opportunities. His son Jeffery, in an unpublished memoir in the Harrison Archives, supports his father’s contention by making the following comment; “it is relevant....to detail the sum paid by my father in 1938 for another almost equally well-known extinct bird, namely a fine mounted example of a male Passenger Pigeon, for which he paid precisely £3!”, This information may have been anecdotal father-to-son comment, but almost certainly backed by the data from family bank statements or cheque stubs. Photo copy of original correspondence between George Bristow and James Harrison included, attached hand written catalogue label to verso of case. Passenger pigeons were hunted by Native Americans, but hunting intensified after the arrival of Europeans, particularly in the 19th century. Pigeon meat was commercialized as cheap food, resulting in hunting on a massive scale for many decades. There were several other factors contributing to the decline and subsequent extinction of the species, including shrinking of the large breeding populations necessary for preservation of the species and widespread deforestation, which destroyed its habitat. A slow decline between about 1800 and 1870 was followed by a rapid decline between 1870 and 1890. The last confirmed wild bird is thought to have been shot in 1901. The last captive birds were divided in three groups around the turn of the 20th century, some of which were photographed alive. Martha, thought to be the last passenger pigeon, died on September 1, 1914, at the Cincinnati Zoo. The eradication of the species is a notable example of anthropogenic extinction. £7,000-10,000
