A George III Silver Wine-Jug, by Thomas Heming, London, 1765 pear-shaped and on spiral-fluted conforming foot, the lower body with waved decoration below a band of chased fruiting grapevines, the upper-body spiral-fluted, with leaf-capped quilted handle and beak-form spout, engraved with initials 28cm high, 36oz 2dwt, 1,123gr

Provenance:

Probably Major General Henry Aylmer (1813-1904) and his wife Charlotte, daughter of John Gwatkin who he married in 1847, and by descent to his eldest son

Henry Lovell Aylmer (1848-1882) and his wife the Hon. Isabella Aylmer, daughter of Sir Udolphus Aylmer, 7th Lord Aylmer who he married in 1872 and by descent to their third son

Henry Adolphus Paget Aylmer (1876-1959) and his second wife Anne Munro Williams, who he married in 1922. Gifted by them to John and Peggy Pemberton on their wedding day 11 February 1936 and by descent.

The inscription reads ‘John and Peggy Pemberton from Paget and Anne Aylmer Feb. 11th 1936’

This fascinating jug is the pair to an example offered in these rooms on 22 May 2021 as lot 2202, presumably the pair were separated when one was given by Major General Henry Aylmer to each of his two sons. Like its pair, the form of the present jug most resembles a beer-jug, though the ornament used clearly shows that it could only have originally been intended for wine. As such it would seem to be an unusual survival of an identifiable wine-jug dating to the 18th century, and even more so as one of a pair. Michael Clayton notes that such jugs were nearly indistinguishable from ale-jugs during this period, though does illustrate a pair, also by Thomas Heming, which date to 1777 (M. Clayton, The Collector’s Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America, London, 1971, p. 63, pl. 331).

Unlike the present example that pair was decorated in the Neo-Classical style as would have been the fashion by the time they were made. Arthur Grimwade also illustrates a number of jugs in his book Rococo Silver, though as noted above their form is virtually unchanged from earlier examples. One however, made by Philips Garden and hallmarked for 1754, stands out (A. Grimwade, Rococo Silver, London, 1974, p. 38, pl. 17b). Like the present example it is exuberantly decorated, though Grimwade suggests it may have been intended for beer.

Most interestingly perhaps is the depiction on Thomas Heming’s trade card of a jug which, while of a somewhat more baluster form, shows the same use of ornament as on the present example with the suggestion of a quilted lower body and a spiral-fluted upper body and with fruiting grapevines between. An example of the trade card, believed to date to the 1760s-1770s, is in the collection of the British Museum (Heal,67.204), having been donated by Sir Ambrose Heal, Chairman of Heal’s furniture store along with a large collection of other trade cards in 1960.

As with the previous example, and noted when it appeared on the market in 2021, the early provenance of the present wine-jug remains something of a mystery The earliest definitively known provenance of the earlier offered example was Captain Edward Arthur Aylmer, D.S.C. and it was thought likely that it had entered the family through his mother, the daughter of Charles William Grenfell, M.P. (1823-1861). This seemed likely as he was known to be acquiring items at auction, for example at least three lots from the celebrated sale of the collection of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos at Stowe House. Other items have appeared at auction, from the collection of Captain Edward, for example, a pair of Helena Wolfsohn porcelain vases and covers, sold in these rooms 22 May 2021, lot 56.

The appearance of the present jug now pushes the provenance of the jug back to an earlier generation in the Aylmer family as the inscription shows this jug to have been in the possession of Henry Adolphus Paget Aylmer, the cousin of the owner of the other example. This suggests ownership by a common ancestor by the name of Major General Henry Aylmer (1813-1904). His will, the probate for which was granted on 26 April 1904, comprises some nine pages, including no fewer than four codicils, commands that ‘...all my furniture plate linen jewels ornaments pictures china wines liquors and other household effects of a like nature... be given to his wife Charlotte Louisa Aylmer’. While he suggests that his trustees take an inventory of the said chattels the will itself does not detail the items generally or the plate specifically. In any case it seems likely that the two jugs would have been given as gifts during his lifetime.

The jug was a wedding gift to John Sigerist Blanshard Pemberton and his wife Margaret Alexandra, nee Cleghorn. The reception following the wedding was held at 474 Mount Pleasant Avenue in Westmount, Montreal Canada, the family home of the Cleghorn family which had been built in 1892 for J. K. Ward, a lumber baron and mayor of Westmount between 1875 and 1883.

A Pair of George III Silver Dressing-Table Boxes, by William Stroud, London, 1802 each oblong and with reeded base, the hinged slightly domed cover later engraved with a lozenge-of-arms below a countess’ coronet, the interiors gilt

21cm wide, 74oz 11dwt, 2,318gr (2)

Provenance:

Bourgeault-Horan Auctioneers, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 17 May 2009, lot 101.

The arms are apparently those of Agar as borne by Ellis Agar, the daughter of James Agar and Mary Wemyss. She was to marry twice, first to Theobald Bourke, 7th Viscount Mayo and after his death to Francis Bermingham, 14th Baron Athenry. She was later granted the use of the title Countess of Brandon, however, this title was only created for use during her lifetime so the title became extinct on her death in 1789. The present boxes, in an earlier style, were perhaps created to add to a service that was extant during her lifetime and so engraved with her arms and motto to match the existing pieces.

A James I Parcel-Gilt Silver Apostle Spoon, by Daniel Cary, London, 1622 the silver-gilt finial cast as Saint Andrew, holding a Saltaire, with Saint Esprit nimbus, the back of the bowl prick engraved with initials ‘RH’ 18cm long, 2oz 1dwt, 64gr

The present spoon would have originally been part of a set of twelve, each depicting an Apostle and presumably a thirteenth, depicting the Master. Other spoons from this same set have appeared on the market, for example, one depicting Saint Matthias sold initially from the Britton Smith Collection, Bonhams, London, 21 November 2007 (£6,240) and subsequently Woolley and Wallis, Salisbury 28 October 2015. Another example, depicting Saint Simon Zelotes, was also sold by Woolley and Wallis, 25 April 2017 (£5,500). The latter example had been purchased from Tessiers on New Bond Street probably in the 1950s so the set had been broken up by then.

At least a further three, but very probably four examples, are now in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, from the bequest of John L. Severance (museum numbers 1942.803-806). These four depict Saint James the Greater with a pilgrim staff (1942.803); Saint Bartholomew with a knife (1942.804); Saint Paul with a sword (1942.805) and Saint Peter with a key (1942.806). Except for the example depicting Saint Peter, each of the above-listed spoons is prick engraved with the initials ‘RH’ as in the present example. The Saint Peter example from the Cleveland Museum of Art seems to match the other examples well and is most likely from the same set, though it has had the prick engraved initials erased, as well as having the bowl gilded, at some point after the set was broken up. A final example, now in the Holburne Museum, Bath, said to depict Saint James the Greater (museum number S206) is also probably from the same set, though it is also lacking the prick engraved initials. This example is also later gilded so it is likely that the original initials were removed and the spoon gilded at some point subsequent to the set being split up.

A Russian Silver Table-Lighter in the Form of an Indian Elephant, by Fabergé, With Imperial Warrant, St Petersburg, 1899-1908, Workmaster Julius Alexander Rappoport, With Scratched Inventory Number

realistically modelled and depicted standing with one rear leg raised as if walking, with an overall textured finish, the head hinged to reveal the compartment for fluid, the trunk hollow to accommodate a wick 11.5cm wide, 7cm high, 10oz 16dwt, 337gr

Provenance:

By family tradition purchased by Stanley Elliott (1892-1956) and by descent.

Stanley Elliott (1892-1956) was born into a life of comfort in Grange Moor, near Wakefield, in West Yorkshire. His father, Benjamin, carried on the business of Lockwood and Elliott which had been founded by his father (Stanley’s grandfather) George, in the middle of the 19th century. The company was involved in coal mining, most notably the Shuttle Eye colliery, which was opened around 1862 on the site of an older smaller operation. Shuttle Eye had two shafts, and at the peak of its operation under the ownership of Lockwood and Elliott, a staff of nearly

200 men. In the 20th century, by this time under the control of Benjamin’s sons Stanley, George and Ralph the firm became Elliott’s Collieries Ltd. and added other mines, such as Lepton Edge and Gregory Spring to its portfolio. Besides coal mining, the family had interests in businesses as varied as the manufacture of bricks and gravel works. Stanley and his brother George also owned between them some 123 houses.

Sadly few invoices for the works of art and chattels purchased by Stanley have been retained in the family archives. The family history however recalls him as a well-travelled man who enjoyed visiting salerooms to acquire items to fill Ingle Court, the house he had built for himself in Lepton near Huddersfield in 1932. Equally the presence of 20th century dealers’ inventory numbers, minutely engraved under one foot, suggests the possibility that he may have purchased the tablelighter directly from a dealer rather than at auction. One invoice that does exist, dated 2nd May 1935, from Old Russia Antiques and Jewellery Limited, 1177 St Catherine Street West, Montreal suggests the latter as a strong possibility and reveals Stanley as, at least a minor, Russophile. Either way, he was a lifelong smoker of a pipe and cigars, so he was likely attracted to the lighter both as a charming object and something that he could use. Another invoice records the purchase of a Triumph Dolomite Saloon car in ‘mistletoe green’ which was purchased on 25 November 1937 for £310 19s 3p, the equivalent of around seven months’ salary for a skilled tradesman at the time.

Fabergé produced a menagerie of zoomorphic table-lighters, often made by his workmaster Julius Alexander Rappoport, as with the present example. They obviously had a great appeal to the royal families of Europe as there are many examples with a royal provenance known, for example, one in the form of a chimpanzee which was sold from the collection of S.A.R. La Principessa Reale Maria Gabriella di Savoia (Christie’s, London, 27 June 2007, lot 19) and another in the form of a frog which was previously owned by Queen Anne of Romania (Christie’s, London, 4 June 2018, lot 235). While these table-lighters were made in the form of many different animals, including a rhinoceros, a lizard and a fish, the elephant was a theme that Fabergé was to return to time and again. They are depicted in many different poses, from seated with the wick emerging from the top of the head to seated, as if begging, with the wick contained in the trunk, as in the present example.

A Chinese Silver Rice-Wine Ewer, Probably Qianlong Period (1735-1796), With Marks for Cornelis Knuystingh, Rotterdam, 1783, Presumably as Importer lobed octagonal and on conforming spreading foot, each lobe chased with differing foliage and flowers, some heightened with birds and each on a matted ground, alternating panels further respectively decorated with rabbits, a crane, a rooster and a horse, with plain handle and spout, the detachable cover similarly decorated and with openwork quatrefoil finial

11cm high, 8oz 17dwt, 275gr

While very probably not made for export Chinese silver pots of a similar form to the present example, often called teapots, had arrived in Europe as early as the late 17th century. One example was given to Louis XIV in 1686 by Siamese envoys. That example, which was acquired by the Palace of Versailles in 2018 (V.2018.8), is of a similar tapering shape to the present example and with panels decorated with Chinoiserie motifs, though it is heightened with gilding. Another example which can be definitively dated is an example which is marked for London, 1682. While there has long been speculation about the origins of that example H. A. Crosby Forbes, John Devereux Kernan and Ruth S. Wilkins felt it was of Chinese manufacture and marked on import into London (H. A. Crosby Forbes, John Devereux Kernan and Ruth S. Wilkins, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1885, Milton, Massachusetts, 1975, pp. 51-52, fig. 22).

2174 (detail of marks)

Other examples include one in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated circa 1680 (M.69:1, 2-1955), another, dated to the Kangxi period, which is thought to have been from the collections of the Duke of Buccleuch which was on the market in 2008 (Christie’s, London, 23 October 2008, lot 233 and a third sold by Bonhams (17 May 2018, lot 266). While unusual to be marked with Dutch marks this would not be the only known example of Chinese silver being so marked. There is for example a ‘large octofoil [sic] basin, decorated with Chinese subjects in relief’ recorded as being marked for Amsterdam 1713, which was part of the silver belonging to the Duke of Portland (A. E. Jones, Catalogue of Plate Belonging to the Duke of Portland, K.G., G.C.V.O. at Welbeck Abbey, London, 1935, p. 42).

Audemars Piguet first introduced this reference 25572 to the market in 1983. It has the double calendar function for the date and day of the week. Due to the dial layout and with the sub dials positioned at a horizontal axis, these watches are now referred to by collectors as “The Owl”. The executions of reference 25572 comes in two form types. The first type 1 layout shows the hands and hour markers having a slender stick form. The type 2 version like the present lot shows the hour and minute hands and hour markers of a rounded baton shape. This is a highly desirable model and reference in today’s watch market.

Frequently working in association with museums, private collectors and educational establishments, highlights of the non-selling exhibition programme include curated displays of treasure from the Bowes Museum and fine art exhibitions including 350 Years of British Art and Light & Shadow, showcasing major loaned works from over twenty museums and numerous private collections. Northern Art is championed too, with frequent selling exhibitions. Recent highlights have included Norman Cornish: Bishop’s Close Street and Sally Arnup: Life in Bronze, both of which were staged in conjunction with the artists’ estates.

BUYERS’ INFORMATION

Buyer’s Premium

A Buyer’s Premium of 22% on the first £999,999 of the Hammer Price and 20% on the amount thereafter, plus VAT, is payable on each lot.

Condition Reports

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Caveat Emptor

The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale.

Additional Images

Requests for additional images of items in the sale can made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

Online Bidding

We offer an online bidding service via our own platformTennants Live Bidding at www.tennants.co.uk. Items purchased via this platform will be subject to an additional 1.5% commission charge plus VAT at the prevailing rate. We also offer online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com for prospective buyers who cannot attend the sale. Items bought via this platform will be subject to an additional 4.95% commission charge plus VAT. By completing registration on www.the-saleroom.com and providing your credit/bank card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with us, you;

(a) authorise Tennants, if they so wish, to charge the credit/bank card given in part of full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via www.the-saleroom.com; and

(b) confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit/bank details to Tennants through www.thesaleroom.com and agree that Tennants are entitled to permit the shipping of the goods to the card holder and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale. We do not accept any liability for any losses, however arising, as a result of a prospective buyer’s use of www.the-saleroom.com. Use of www.the-saleroom.com is subject to separate terms and conditions which do not form part of these conditions.

Telephone Bidding

Requests for telephone bidding must be registered at least one hour prior to the close of the View Day. We will not accept requests on the Day of Sale. Telephone Lines are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to a minimum lot value of £500 for Fine Art Sales and £200 for all other sales.

Absentee Bidding

Whilst reasonable endeavours will be made to execute absentee bidding up to the Day of Sale, Tennants will not be liable for any default or neglect in connection with this service. All such arrangements therefore are made entirely at the Prospective Buyer’s risk.

VAT

Value added tax or any equivalent tax chargeable in the UK or elsewhere.

Agency

We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us.

Jewellery

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.

Watches

All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.

Export/ CITES Regulations

CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.

It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.

CITES regulations are given on www.ukcites.gov.uk or may be obtained from:
