DEALER/HOARDER’S ESTATE The following seven lots represent a three-quarter tonne late entry from a life-long dealer/collector and definite hoarder. We have done our best in the time available to loosely group some distinct sections and have sifted out the paperwork, empty glassines and stockcards. We expected the usual tired remainder material, however this turned out to be very much alive, with interesting items and postal history at every turn. There is still substantial chaos here and all of these lots will benefit enormously from further work.

146 Russian Asia. The monumental remains of this collector’s work on his favourite philatelic area, particularly his exhibition subject: Transcaspia and Turkestan, as well as many other ex-Soviet areas and POs abroad, with whole volumes largely intact (mostly kept together in their inner covers, the binders jettisoned), along with collections bought from dealers and auctions internationally. At least three feet of album pages filling two large containers, with thousands of stamps and hundreds of postal history items written-up in detail, including excellent Post Offices in China and the Levant, impressive pages of Wrangel overprints on Tridents of Ukraine, sections for ship mail, lots of postmark studies, for example ‘Romanov portraits used in Harbin’. An extraordinary holding that really must be viewed to be fully appreciated. £2,000-2,500 www.tennants.co.uk

Thousands of mint and used stamps in albums, on album pages and stockcards, much postal history as well, an enormously engaging viewing with much value, many of the sections being good lots bought in auction over the decades and left largely intact, some highlights being a specialised collection of 150+ Albanian shooting star overprints (some signatures), further Albania better items on cards in a small box incl. errors, Hungary from first issues in a series of old loose-leaf albums, lots of 1919 Occupation of Hungary overprints to 10kr, Italian POs abroad and Occupations, good Bosnia, Latvia and Lithuania written-up on pages, etc, the postal history particularly interesting including groups of Egypt and Palestine. Better items discovered in this fascinating morass are Gold Coast 1935 extra flagstaff 1d mint vertical pair with normal (SG.113a, cat. £140), Portugal 1949 portraits souvenir sheet used (SG.MS1028a, cat. £120), scarce West Ukraine ovpt on Bosnia/Herzegovina postage due 5sh used, pulled corner perf, with 2008 RPS certificate (SG.53, cat. £4,250), which goes to show absolutely anything could be here. Needless to say a close inspection is vital. Huge potential for reward once organised. £2,500-3,000

156 British Commonwealth: KGVI and QEII Generally mint collection of at least 4000 stamps by country from Aden to Zanzibar in four ‘Utile’ albums. The later sets, about from UPU onwards, have been mounted with an unfortunate kind of hinge affecting some stamps more than others with stains (none of which are included in our estimate, though some appear perfect from front - see for example the final online photo). The earlier issues however are very high quality, virtually everything in complete sets with much mounted on selvage only including high values. Cleanly hinged highlights include first George VI sets of Antigua (top five values MNH), Ascension to 10/- incl. 1½d Davit flaw (SG.40ba cat. £200), Bahamas to £1, Basutoland (top value MNH), Bermuda perf 14 to £1 (less 12/6d) with 2/- and 2/6d MNH, British Honduras (top two values MNH), Cyprus to £1, Cyrenaica 1950 set, Falklands to £1, Fiji (top two values MNH), Gibraltar to £1, Hong Kong to $10, Malaysian States Sultans to $5, Malta sets to 10/-, Sarawak 1950 set MNH, Swaziland (top two values MNH), etc, etc. Lots more here to see, a recommended viewing. £750-1,000

161 British Commonwealth: Two-Volume New Imperial A lovely collection in two well-filled green New Imperial albums, with over 7,000 mint stamps and a further 1000+ used, with condition generally exemplary, the colours bright and hardly any faults even in the 19th century issues, the earliest classics generally being avoided by this collector. This is intact as received and stated to catalogue £72,000 (2006), which does not account for the never hinged here which includes frequent high values only mounted on selvage, a good range of Newfoundland, Falklands Centenary issue to 1/-, etc. Besides which we have noted better varieties not counted in the owner’s cataloguing: Brunei 1929 5cts orange-yellow showing U-L value tablet retouch with distinctive thin ‘c’ (SG.66a, cat. £325), Malta 1922 2/- showing ‘break in lines below left scroll’ (SG.103e, cat. £400), elusive ‘broken frame and crown’ varieties on the 1905 25cts and 50cts of Straits Settlements (SG.133a, cat. £750; SG.135a cat. £750), as well as British East Africa 1897 2½d surcharge missing fraction bar unlisted in SG. Another extra-catalogue item is a charming and most probably unique 1922 Barbados 1/- with designer Mrs. G. W. Goodman’s initials in lower selvage and petulant inscription ‘this is my design spoilt’ (De La Rue had reduced the naturalism of her original essay, in particular declining to include the flying fish - see photo online). This collection is a delight to view and there will no doubt be more for the keen-eyed to discover. £6,500-8,500
