Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899) Born in North Shields, Northumberland, Birket Foster was educated in London and then apprenticed to wood engraver Ebenezer Landells. Although he trained as a wood engraver and designed many book and other publication illustrations in his early career, he is known primarily as a landscape watercolour painter. In 1860 he was elected an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, followed by full membership in 1862. From this, his success was both instant and great, as he wrote to his brother-in-law at that time “commissions for pictures pour in”. Birket Foster’s landscapes were often rustic and idealised, although this was not his sole aim; he sought to capture a traditional way of life that the encroachment of industry and the agricultural depression was threatening. His focus was both in the Home Counties as well as on the Continent, travelling all over Europe depicting with his gentle naturalism many of the scenes he encountered. He exhibited extensively and his later works included oils that were shown at the Royal Academy. In 1895, he was elected to be a member of the Berlin Academy. His works appear today in many public collections, including The Courtauld Gallery and the V&A, as well as Tyne & Wear Museums.

George Weatherill (1810-1890) The second son of a Yorkshire farmer, George Weatherill was born in the fishing village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast. As a child he spent much of his spare time watching the fishermen at work whilst drawing in the sand. During an apprenticeship with Garbutt, a Guisborough-based solicitor, he met George Haydock Dodgson, a local painter who helped him develop his artistic skills. Whilst working in Whitby with bankers Messrs Simpson and Chapman, Weatherill painted whenever possible, focussing on picturesque compositions of the local villages and towns. Promoted to Chief Cashier, he was able to visit the Tate and National Galleries when on trips to London, where the works of JMW Turner greatly inspired him. As a result, he taught himself Italian so that he could read the Italian works of the Florentine, Venetian and Roman Schools. Weatherill had a nervous breakdown in 1860, forcing him to resign from the bank. Retirement saw his talent for drawing flourish as he accurately observed details of Whitby and the surrounding countryside in his paintings. In these small-scale watercolours he captured subtle atmospheric effects of the light and a remarkable amount of detail. His four children were all taught to paint by their father, and the Weatherill family’s artworks are of great historical interest locally, regionally and also nationally.

John Nost Sartorious (1755-1828) From a family of artists, John Nost Sartorious was considered the best-known and most prolific of his kin. As a painter of sporting scenes, many of his pictures could be found in the country houses of his patrons who included the leading sportsmen of the day, such as the Prince of Wales and the Earl of Derby. Between 1781-1824, 74 of his pictures were shown at the Royal Academy. Some of Sartorious’ most famous paintings were portraits of racehorses. Gimcrack was one such; a small (less than 15hh), iron-grey colt born in 1760, by Cripple who himself was by Godolphin Arabian. Out of his 36 races, Gimcrack won 26 and was placed in nearly every other. During his racing career he had a total of five different owners including Lord Grosvenor - who’s colours are worn by this jockey, Sir Charles Banbury and Louis-Leon-Felicite de Brancas, the later Duc de Brancas. The latter took Gimcrack to France and received condemnation from the British press for running the colt in a 22½ mile race in less than one hour. Aged 11 Gimcrack was able to retire to the Grosvenor Stud after a career of successes, including winning his final race at Newmarket in 1771. There is no doubt that Gimcrack was universally admired, particularly “beloved of York” where Ye Ancient Fraternite of York Gimcracks (commonly known as The Gimcrack Club), was founded in 1770 in his honour, the tough little horse.

Algernon Cecil Newton (1880-1968) Born in Hampstead, Algernon Newton was the grandson of the artist and businessman Henry Charles Newton, founder of Windsor & Newton. He left Clare College Cambridge without completing his degree and studied at various art colleges in London in the subsequent years, including Frank Calderon’s School of Animal Painting, the Slade School of Art and the London School of Art. He began exhibiting as early as 1903, with The Arab ‘Rebab’ accepted at the Royal Academy. After frequent moves with his young family and a period serving in WW1, this primary success was later followed by regular exhibitions from 1924 onwards, before acceptance as an associate RA in 1936 and a full member in 1943. Earning the nickname “the Canaletto of the canals”, Newton would often find his subject matter whilst walking through the more run-down areas of London, depicting urban waterways in a sombre and naturalistic manner. Working from on-the-spot sketches, Newton also painted sweeping and atmospheric landscapes including of Cornwall and Yorkshire, the former being where his mother descended from and where he spent much of his time. Of these landscapes he said: “I tried to create something in every picture I painted, a mood, a mental atmosphere, a sentiment”.

Picture Descriptions The forename(s) (or asterisks where not known) and surname of the artist indicates, in our opinion, a work by the artist named. The initials of the forename(s) and the surname of the artist indicates in our opinion a work of the period of the artist which may be wholly or in part his work. The following terms apply in our determination of a picture description: (a) “Attributed to” - is in our opinion probably a work by the artist. (b) “Studio of” - is in our opinion a work from the studio of the artist which may or may not have been executed under his direction. (c) “Circle of” - is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist executed under his immediate influence. (d) “Follower of” - is in our opinion a work by a painter working in the artist’s style, contemporary or nearly contemporary, but not necessarily his pupil. (e) “Manner of” - is in our opinion a work in a style related to that of the artist, but of a later date. (f) “School accompanied by the name of a place or country and a date” - means that in our opinion the picture was executed at that time and in that location; e.g. Flemish School, 17th century. (g) “After” - an artist is in our opinion a copy of any date after a work by that artist. (h) “Signed and/or dated and/or inscribed means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription” - are from the hand of the artist. (i) “Bears signature and/or dated and or inscription means that in our opinion the artist’s name and/or date and/or inscription” - have been added by another hand. (j) All references to signature, inscriptions and dates refer to the present state of the work. (k) Dimensions are given height before width and do not include the frame (l) Pictures are framed unless otherwise stated.
