All-aboard fashion you can afford

i

f you have Vogue taste on an InStyle budget, then have I got shopping options for you. I hesitate to call these shops budget-friendly — you will want everything in sight, negating any savings you may accrue. Still, the price point is lovely, if you can restrain yourself. Blush is one of those stores where both high society ladies and seriously-on-abudget young women shop. The store stocks amazing dresses, tops, denim and shoes — all on trend and at prices that will have you drooling. I stopped by before the CMA Awards last year and half of the Music Row publicists were shopping for the red carpet. Stock rotates often, so go as often as you dare. Apricot Lane is girly, edgy, funky. I love their dresses, many less than $60, and the fact that they offer accessories, handbags and shoes makes this a one-stop-shopping venue. Muse is another great wallet-friendly store that has a great mix of dresses and tops with a smattering of denim and skirts. Feminine and flirty goods are offered along with strong customer service. They love to help style clients and are remarkable at it. Think of them as your own personal shoppers. Comfortable shoes

t

here are shoes that exist for after 6 p.m. Those of the cocktail, black-tie iteration. Those shoes are lovely, but I call them two-hour shoes. Frankly, after two hours you are incapable of walking and have to be carried home. Then there are shoes that work for day and play. Such shoes are your friends and should be shopped for with care and love. If you choose from the stores below, your feet will thank you.

Marmi I love this store for many reasons. It carries an amazingly deep stock so that every size under the sun is available. The selection of beautiful shoes is (almost) overwhelming, and the staff is helpful to a fault. And then there is the hidden reason I love the store: Somehow, all of the shoes are comfortable. Yes, even the heels, are comfy. But so are the hundreds of pairs of career and casual shoes.

Merrell If we all stayed inside and blogged, posted on Facebook and Twitter all day, we would be a miserable bunch. Happily, the folks at Merrell make walking, hiking and other moveyour-body options comfortable and cool. The styles are amazing, so even if you are not the least bit athletic, you will still want a pair of comfy-casual-cute shoes for those Saturdays spent antiquing. Stop the social media obsession and go to Merrell.

Cute & Comfy Shoes Nothing is worse than wearing shoes that scream orthopedic. You don’t have to scream anything but hallelujah if you shop at Cute & Comfy. They stock footwear that actually works for even the most defeated feet. And still have tons of styles that are, well, cute.

Cook & Love The shoe store to visit if you wear a size that is difficult to find. Not only do they carry sizes 4 to 13 with widths SS to WW, but also, the store has been around since 1925 and the staff understands local customer service like no one else.

ay dresses, cocktail dresses and flirty casual frocks. Dresses that go from desk to dinner and dresses that are meant to be worn on a hot date. All are equally important. (They get so jealous of each other, you understand.) And the boutiques that offer them are important, too.

Stacey Rhodes Boutique You know those fabulous boutiques that carry clothing that works for dressy cocktail parties to a fun girls night out? The one

that is not at all intimidating to a shopper? Where the staff is helpful beyond belief, and it always feels like a party is in progress? This is that store. Not only is owner Stacey Rhodes amazingly chic, but she also shares her style love with every customer. Dresses? Yes, she has that covered. But she also stocks fun items like Toms and luxury leather goods. And did I mention the jewelry? Some of my favorite pieces, oneof-a-kind artisan things, come from this store. Love, love, love. If you like rocker chic and Southern sweet, this is your store.

Levy’s With the feel of a wellstocked department store, Levy’s carries a deep selection of menswear, ladieswear and accessories. Somehow, the store manages to offer oldschool customer service that is beyond belief. A good thing because the store has so many amazing options that you may feel overwhelmed. Don’t. Just grab one of the charming salespeople and start trying on goodies from Hugo Boss, Armani and more. This store, which opened in 1855, is so entrenched as a Nashville icon that I often wonder how it manages to stay so utterly current.

Levy's

Kendal Boutique This relative newcomer to Nashville has nailed the fashion mix. Almost everything in the store works for both the college-age daughter and her still-rocking-it mom. I love the edgy-meetsfeminine vibe evident lines like Ali Ro, Kay Unger New York and Hunter Dixon.

Denim darlings

s

hopping for a great pair of jeans is like searching for the Holy Grail. All women are desperate to find a pair that makes them look amazing and somehow 10 pounds lighter. Easier said than done, unless you shop at one of the stores that specialize in denim the way McDonald’s specializes in French fries. Of course, fewer French fries might make denim shopping easier. But that is another story. With offerings like 7 For All Mankind and J Brand and Joe’s Jeans, eAllen Boutique is a serious denim haven. Skinnies, bootcut, colored and patterned, this boutique stocks them all. Along with great accessories, dresses, shoes and belts, the store is really a well-curated fashionista’s dream. Especially if she is dreaming of great denim. Paige Premium Denim, J Brand, Hudson and AG are just a few of the upscale blue-jean babies that are stocked at Boutique Bella. The store, a favorite for Vandy girls, career women and ladies who lunch, is a cupcake with extra icing. So sweet, satisfying and utterly irresistible.

Luxury jewel love

i

f you are a magpie and love all things shiny then a visit to all of these stellar stores will make you giddy. If you don’t love beautiful jewelry, top-of-the-line watches, and all things elegant, then, by all means, don’t bother stopping in. Beautiful is mandatory at these shops, and I wouldn’t want to waste your time. Ward Potts should be on every groomand bride-to-be’s list. Beautiful loose diamonds that you can then design into a dream engagement ring are just one of the options this elegant store will offer. Expect other beautiful jewelry lines, Marco Bicego and James Breski are both sold here, along with amazing customer service. Anatra Jewel is home to baubles that are cutting-edge and classic at once. A channel-set diamond band by designer Barbara Heinrich Studio nestles happily beside local designer Robin Haley’s gold lace cross in the showcase. Prices range from (I-need-a-treat) less than $100 to (Iam-amazing and so worth it) several thousand dollars. Still, the staff is so helpful, even if you are just starting out on your heirloom jewelry collection. And that’s what every piece you purchase from Anatra Jewel will be. Heirloom. Jerry Lindsey is an artist who happens to create with gold, silver, gemstones and diamonds. His store, Jerry Lindsey Custom Jewelry, offers not only carefully curated items, but also the opportunity for you to design a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. A sketch, an idea or even a conversation with Lindsey can start the creative process that will lead you to an heirloom-in-the-making. And I love the idea of taking an existing piece of jewlery that you never wear (exwedding ring, anyone?) and making it into something fresh and modern. Lindsey specializes in those sorts of re-creations.

Accessories for a fraction

From Julio Design at Festivity, Seda Coral Bracelet, $40.

b

aubles, happies, bling. Whatever you name them, accessories are the icing on the cake. Can you really have chocolate cake without butter cream icing? I think not. Shop all three of the stores below for lots of sugary goodness. Statement necklace, oversized hoop earrings, beaded headband and more goodies than you can imagine fill the trendy boutique, Jondie. Think leather wrap bracelets, fedoras and charming vintage handmade necklaces. Prices are moderate, $20 to $50, with a few hand-made higher pieces scattered in. Youthful and hip, the store is a perfect option for a little pick-me-up or gift. Festivity is that rare bird in retail. They manage to satisfy every budget and style with their offerings of accessories and still feel well-edited. Yes, they offer apparel and gifts as well, but the jewelry is the star of the shop. The goods, unique pieces that scream big bucks, are amazingly well priced. Think $50 for a piece that is from a design collection — aka not mass-produced. I am especially enamored of the bracelet selection from Julio Design, but the stores have collaborated with several designers whose work is fresh and modern. Gilchrist & Gilchrist is ethereal, calming and somehow magical. Owner Genia Gilchrist loves white, and her style is charming vintage and utterly covetable. Chunky antique-esque charm bracelets, vintage-style necklaces and other feminine delights fill the store. They offer gifts and home decor items, too, but I always seem to walk away with an accessory from this lovely store.

love gifts. Getting them and buying them. And there is such an art to gifting that I am obsessed with amassing a directory of great gift-buying venues so that all of my gifts will be stellar. Luckily, there are so many great options, I am never at a loss for gift greatness. Hot Pink covers every gift-giving category. Baby gifts, wedding gifts and birthday gifts fill the store. And not just a few options, I am talking jewelry, candles, monogrammable items, stationery. I could go on and on, but rather than waste your time, I advise you to stop reading and just go. For wedding and hostess gifts and home decor accessories Color rules. No, I don’t mean shades of blue, red and green. I mean Color, the amazingly well-stocked store that offers lines like Juliska. Imagine elegant stemwear, cool mercury glass candlesticks, unusual vases and whimsical linens, and you get the idea. The store offers a bridal registry, and every time I visit I wish I could get married again. Just so I could register for all the love they sell. Ibiza Fine Gifts is a jewel of a store that you’ll find yourself going to for every gift-giving occasion. And you’ll also slip in a few times for your own retail therapy fix. Think acrylic stemware to luxury Waterford. They cover all the bases from casual to black tie with lines like Beatriz Ball, Lladro, Raynaud and Allison Craft jewelry, plus linens, fine china and, of course, they offer a wedding registry.

Amazing spa services, facials, peels and spray tans, yes and yes. But what I really love about this makeup, skin care and all-things-pampering mecca? The staffers are so wonderfully well-trained, courteous and all-around lovely. They will take you by the hand and walk you through a quick makeup how-to or help you choose the perfect gift. I come here for makeup tips and have had my makeup done for many red-carpet events by the amazing makeup artists who call Private Edition home.
