Victory bookended an incredible season for the European #1, who began the year by winning the coveted Les Petits As title, and ended with the Junior Masters, racking up two other singles and doubles titles, and establishing a 45-4 win/loss record along the way. Speaking after the match, Nardi said, “I’m very happy for this win. I played a very good match today. The crowd helped me a lot, every time I won a point they were cheering me and calling ‘Forza Luca’. It’s a perfect way to end the year, and now I will go away and train for two months in the winter and come back strong.” Silver medallist Pinnington Jones also has reason to be happy following a season in which he won three singles

The 2017 Tennis Europe Junior Masters took place in October, bringing the Tour’s season to an official climax with three days of high-level action in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Top seed Luca Nardi gave the home fans plenty to cheer about, becoming just the second ever Italian to claim the boys’ 14 & Under title. He grew in confidence throughout the weekend, eventually scoring his easiest win of the tournament in his final match, hitting peak form in a 6-2 6-1 win over Briton Jack Pinnington Jones.

and four doubles titles, including the European Junior Championships. The 14 & Under girls’ final was an all-Russian battle between Diana Shnaider and Maria Bondarenko. In a match characterised by punishingly long rallies, fourth seed Shnaider edged a tight first set before accelerating away in the second, eventually claiming a 6-4 6-1 victory.

The 16 & Under boys’ title went to Nini Dica of Romania after a hard-hitting battle with third seed Anthony Genov of Bulgaria. Genov took an early lead and served for the first set before being broken twice as the top seed got into the zone, winning nine of the final ten games to emerge with a 7-5 6-1 victory.

It was the first win for Shnaider over her compatriot in four matches, and she was pleased with her performance, saying “I am very happy because I felt a lot of pressure during the match. I wanted to win because this is the best tournament with the best players.”

The victory was her third singles title of the season, following on from wins in Riga and Trnava, and enables Shnaider to end the season ranked in the Top 5.

16 & Under champion Nini Dica (ROU).

The win adds a Junior Masters title to Dica’s European Junior Championships silver medal, and the Romanian said he is now looking forward to new challenges, explaining “Tomorrow I fly to Argentina to play some ITF events. I will also play in Uruguay and Peru and end up at the Orange Bowl, so this is a great start.” Top seed Carole Monnet overcame the challenge of European Junior Championship silver medallist Caijsa Hennemann of Sweden to claim the girls’ 16 & under title, scoring a third consecutive straight sets win of the weekend before lifting the trophy. Hennemann had also not lost a set on route to the final, but had no answer to Monnet’s consistency, losing 6-2 6-2. Monnet becomes the first ever French girl to win a Junior Masters title, and the first French player since Julien Jeanpierre in 1996, the inaugural year of the competition. She was understandably delighted with the win, having worked hard in recent weeks to get ready for the tournament, “I am very happy because I started the year with an injury, and then I made it made my objective to qualify for this tournament and I really wanted to win it,” she said. The bronze medal play-off matches saw Igor Kudriashov of Russia beat German Samofalov (UKR) 6-2 1-6 6-2 (Boys 14&U), Jana Kolodynska (BLR) beat Elena Karner (AUT) 6-2 6-1 (Girls 14&U), Lukas Neumayer (AUT) beat Matas Vasiliauskas (LTU) 6-0 3-6 6-2 (Boys 16&U), and Weronika Baszak (POL) beat Marketa Panackova (CZE) 6-2 7-6(2). There was consolation for Panackova in the form of a special ‘Fair Play’ award, given in appreciation of her outstanding sportsmanship throughout the weekend.

The tournament drew to a close with an elaborate ceremony at which members of the organising committee from the host club, ASD Circolo Tennis Rocco Polimeni, awarded prizes to all of the participants.

The Tennis Europe Junior Masters is a season-ending event for the elite players of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, with the top eight six of the 14 and 16 & Under age categories invited to compete alongside the European Junior Champion and runner-up. Former champions of the tournament include stars such as Alexander Zverev (2011), Rafael Nadal (2000) and Kim Clijsters (1997).

Tennis Europe announces departure of CEO Tennis Europe has announced that after more than 20 years of service with the organisation, Olli Mäenpää has departed from the role of Chief Executive Officer to pursue opportunities elsewhere. The search for a new CEO is already under way, with a three-person committee established by Tennis Europe’s Board of Management to oversee the recruitment process. In the interim period, the dayto-day activities are being executed by the Tennis Europe management in Basel in close cooperation with the Board. Member nations are encouraged to nominate potential candidates for the position. Further details about the role and information on how to apply can be found at the Tennis Europe website. The deadline for applications is Friday 15th December. Tennis Europe President Vladimir Dmitriev paid tribute to Mr. Mäenpää, saying “We would like to thank Olli for his many years of service to European tennis, during which time his contribution to the growth of our organisation has been immeasurable. On behalf of the Board

of Management, the staff and our constituent national associations, I would like to wish him every success in his future endeavours.” Mr. Dmitriev continued: “Tennis Europe has built a strong foundation for future growth in recent years, including strengthening our team, developing our sales and marketing and continuously improving our operations. The Board and I are committed to the implementation and execution of our new strategy and continuing to move Tennis Europe forward.” Mr. Mäenpää commented, “I am very proud of the achievements of Tennis Europe and my role as the CEO during the transformation from a small organisation to a highly recognised and respected international business and service unit. I would like to thank the organisation, global governing bodies, all 50 member nations and the broader tennis industry for their support and acknowledgements throughout the years. The timing of my departure is ideal with a new President and Board elected in the spring and I look forward to announcing my new business ventures in due course.”

Vitor Cabral appointed as new Development Officer for Europe Vitor Cabral has been named as the new Development Officer for Europe by the International Tennis Federation. The new ITF/Tennis Europe Development Officer has a strong background in both playing and coaching tennis. Cabral, who is from Porto, has worked with the Portuguese Tennis Federation for 25 years and is also a university teacher in tennis, training methodology, physiology, biomechanics and sports management. He has been an active contributor to (and organiser of) Tennis Europe’s coaching conferences for many years and is held in high regard by his colleagues at Tennis Europe. Tennis Europe President Vladimir Dmitriev said, “I would like to congratulate Vitor on his appointment and welcome him to the development team. We are already greatly looking forward to working together on the many projects planned for the new year. I would also like to thank outgoing Development Officer Hrvoje Zmajic for his many years of dedication and excellent performance in the position, and wish him every success for the future.”

New Development Officers have also been appointed for the regions of Pacific Oceania (Gary Purcell) and Southern Africa (Tapiwa Masunga), and all three met their counterparts from the other regions at the annual Development Officer’s meeting at the ITF headquarters in London in October. Mr. Cabral will commence his role at the beginning of 2018.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour & Pro Tennis Conference 64 delegates from 28 member nations attended the Tennis Europe Junior Tour & Pro Tennis Conference last week in Spain. The event, which was held from 28th – 30th November at La Manga Club, saw two days of presentations, discussions and working groups focusing on contemporary topics concerning administrators and organisers of junior and professional tennis tournaments. Moderated by Regional Officiating Officer Anders Wennberg, the opening day’s combined session gave prominence to International Tennis Federation matters, with the player pathway forming the basis for the afternoon’s break out group discussions. After a second combined session the next morning, day two saw the groups split for specialised key sessions. Following an introductory update on Tennis Europe’s junior activities, Junior Committee Chair Eva-Maria Schneider and Junior Tennis Manager Stephanie Kamberi led a key session focusing on best practices for tournament administrators. Meanwhile, Professional Tennis Committee Chair Allar Hint led his group through a series of presentations on topics relating to the ITF Pro Circuits and Beach Tennis. The conference also saw meetings of Tennis Europe’s Junior and Professional Tennis Committees. The official dinner, hosted at the Hotel Principe Felipe, saw Russia awarded the Nation’s Trophy for the best overall performance by a nation at the 2016 European Junior Championships, while outgoing ITF/Tennis Europe Development Officer Hrvoje Zmajic was recognised for his long and outstanding contribution to the organisation. 2017 marked the third occasion that both Junior and Pro Tennis meetings had been combined, a move met with enthusiasm by the participants, who found that they shared many common experiences, goals and challenges. During their stay, the delegates were also able to enjoy the award-winning facilities on offer at La Manga Club, Tennis Europe’s Official Resort Partner.

Tennis Europe Junior Educational Forum The 2017 Tennis Europe Junior Educational Forum was held at the recent Junior Masters event in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The annual Forum is intended to introduce elite players to some of the challenges that they will encounter during the next stages of their junior or professional careers, and was hosted by Tennis Europe’s Communications Manager, Jonathan Jobson with Faye Andrews of sports PR and communications firm The Emilia Group. This year’s edition experimented with a successful new format designed to engage the players, who actively participated to the program instead of listening to traditional presentations. After a brief introduction to the work of Tennis Europe, and some specially prepared video messages and advice from professional players including Nick

Players took part in ‘Brain Games’ - problem-solving tasks related to nutrition, sponsorship, tennis integrity and rules and regulations.

Kyrgios and Kevin Anderson, the players in attendance were split into small teams. Each group of four or five featured a mixture of boys and girls from both participating age groups (14 and 16 & under). The teams then underwent a series of challenges which tested their knowledge of topics related to media, governance and wellbeing. Tasks included problem-solving heats related to nutrition, hydration, sponsorship, tennis integrity and rules and regulations. At each stage, the players were encouraged to discuss and debate their reasoning for the answers they gave, and – if necessary - were given the correct the correct information. The players were given additional challenges throughout the weekend, and were keen to follow up on the media training tips that they had received from the pros in subsequent interview training sessions. Tennis Europe Junior Committee Chair Eva-Maria Schneider commented, “The new format of the Forum was a great success, and was ideal for a group of this size. By encouraging players to work together in small teams, taking decisions as a group, discussing hypothetical situations and drawing on their own experiences to compete for small prizes, we were happy to see everybody get involved with enthusiasm, regardless of their age or language abilities, which can be a challenge when presenting such topics to young juniors.”

The winners of the 2017 ‘Tennis Europe Junior Tour Players of the Year’ titles have been revealed. The award is presented to the four players that top the boys’ and girls’ 14 and 16 & Under rankings at the end of the season, plus a series of other winners selected for their achievements on the Tour throughout the year. In addition to the coveted ‘Player of the Year’ title, this year’s four year-end #1 ranked players will also receive a special prize of a one-week stay at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in southern France, to be taken during 2018.

The girls 14 & under title went to Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva. The dominant player of 2017, she spent most of the season ranked #1, compiling a 37-6 win/loss record in singles. Curiously she won just one 14 & Under title (the Category 1 event in Moscow), but she also claimed two Category 1 16 & Under titles in Italy, played on the Russian Winter Cups by HEAD team and won two medals at the European Junior Championships – gold in doubles and silver in singles.

Jack Pinnington-Jones becomes the first British player ever to end the season as 14 & Under #1, after a strong season in which he won three singles and four doubles titles, including gold at the European Junior Championships (alongside compatriot Joel Pierleoni), and was also runner-up at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters.

Pinnington-Jones thus goes one step further than Britain’s previous best performance by a 14 & Under boy, when Andy Murray ended the 2001 season in second position behind long-time rival Novak Djokovic. On hearing the news, Jack commented, “It feels great! I

Recent Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Nini Gabriel Dica of Romania claims the Boys 16 & under title. Prior to winning the Masters, he claimed the silver medal at the European Junior Championships, as well as four other singles and two doubles titles.

Another Junior Masters champion, Carole Monnet of France, is awarded the Girls’ 16 & Under Player of the Year title. Restricting her play to Category 1 events, Monnet was the dominant player on the 16 & Under circuit this year, losing just two of 24 matches and never losing before the final, claiming titles in Villneuve-les-Avignon and Barcelona on route to the finals in Reggio Calabria.

She has an inspiring story, telling Tennis Europe, “Performance has no limits. One year ago, I was in a wheelchair and today you announce that I am the Player of the Year: I am so happy! I’d like to thank all the clubs where I played, my partners, and Tennis Europe for this experience. It’s been a great season for me with the support of my coach Hervé Romain. Thanks everybody!”

Overseas Players of the Year

The undisputed doubles partnership of the year is Priska Madelyn Nughoho (IND) and her partner Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. The pair won five doubles titles (including an impressive four 14 & Under Category 1 events, and 1 16 & Under tournament) and went unbeaten in 21 matches throughout their entire summer tour of Europe.

For the first time, two teams share the award. Both teams won Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD and European Summer Cups titles, and both teams ended the season with 27-6 win/loss records. It’s worth mentioning that Daniel Rincon and Carlos Alcaraz Garfia competed at both events for Spain, while Lyubov Kostenko and Dasha Lopatetskaya formed the backbone of the Ukrainian team. They were joined by Marc Othman Ktiri and Kateryna Rublevska at the Winter Cups, and by Alejandro Correa Linares and Anastasiya Soboleva at the Summer Cups respectively.

Pedro Boscardin Dias of Brazil was the top performing overseas boy, ending the season ranked as the #16 14 & under player. His season included singles and doubles titles at the Category 1 event in Velp, and a singles final in Paris.

This title goes to the players from non-European nations that have made the biggest splash on the Tour throughout the year. Priska Madelyn Nugroho of Indonesia was the standout performer amongst the girls, ending the season in the 14 & under Top 10, and compiling an impressive 21-3 win/loss record in singles, winning Category 1 events in Hasselt and Velp. Her doubles performance was even more impressive, of which you can read more later...

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Awards

In addition to the Players of the Year, the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy is also extending one-week invitations to the winners of the recent Tennis Europe Junior Masters. In the case of 16 & Under champions Carole Monnet and Nini Dica, this means a two-week stay at the pioneering facilities, while 14 & Under champions Diana Shnaider of Russia and Luca Nardi of Italy will also have the chance to join them.

Certificates will be presented to representatives from the national associations of all the winning players at the Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting in Budapest in March.

Tennis Europe Coach Education Conference Almost 60 delegates from more than 30 member nations attended the 2017 Tennis Europe Coaches Conference in Sofia, where the event was hosted by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation from 9-10 October. This edition of the conference was built around the theme of ‘online tools for coach education’ and featured contributions from many of the leading names from Tennis Europe’s constituent national tennis federations, as well as specialists in the field. The event took place over two days and was comprised of a mixture of lecture sessions, interactive working groups and panel discussions. The conference was opened on Monday, 9th October by the Tennis Europe Development Committee Chairperson Christiane Jolissaint and the Bulgarian Tennis Federation CEO Katerina Guenova. The first day went on to focus on online coach education tools and their implementation, while Day 2 looked at application, integrating and motivating coaches to use online tools. The event closed with group discussions and online use of one of the tools led by Frank van Fraayenhoven. Following the Tennis Europe Coach Education Conference, the majority of the coaches took advantage of the opportunity to remain in Sofia in order to attend the ITF Worldwide Coaches Conference, which got underway on Tuesday evening at the same venue.

Amongst the key speakers of the Coach Education Conference were Patrice Gruet Director at the Trans-Faire, a French company specialized in coach and animators education in the field of sport. Kenneth Bastiaens from MultiSkilzz - together with Niklas Fjeldstad from the Swedish Tennis Federation - presented the current online possibilities of the unique development method implemented by MultiSkillz. Representatives from several Tennis Europe A and B nations also shared their experiences with online tools, with contributions from Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Austria and Finland. The delegates were also treated to an evening at one of the Marinela Hotel restaurants – Ambassador, where the official dinner was held. ITF/Tennis Europe Development Office Hrvoje Zmajic summed up the meeting, saying, “The conference was very well attended and we have been grateful to receive very positive feedback from the delegates. Online tools for coach education is a relatively new but increasingly important topic for this event, and it was satisfying to see so many speakers and federations eager to contribute. I’d like to thank Bulgarian Tennis Federation for the first-class organisation and the warm hospitality that we all received during our stay.”

2018 12 & Under Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD Preview Europe’s biggest indoor team tennis competition – the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD – is just weeks away. The events kick off with the 12 & Under category, which sees the qualifying rounds take place during the last week of January. 61 national teams are due to take part at six venues across the continent, with eight boys’ and eight girls’ teams advancing to the final rounds two weeks later. The Czech boys’ team will be aiming for an historic hattrick of titles as they kick off their campaign at home in Hradek nad Nisou, and would enjoy further home support if they advance to the final rounds in Veska. Defending girls’ champions Russia also open the competition by hosting a qualifying group in Khanty Mansiysk before possibly heading to the final rounds in Sunderland (GBR). For a full list of the dates, venues and repartition of nations for the 12 & under event, please see below. The composition of the qualifying groups for the 14 and 16 & Under age groups – which commence the weekend after the 12 & Under qualifying and see 132 more teams in action - will be announced on the Tennis Europe website in the coming days.

2018 marks the 40th edition of the Winter Cups, the event where the last three world #1s and former Davis Cup champions (Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal) all won their first international team titles.

European Individual and Club Championships in Mallorca The European Senior Championships for Individuals and Clubs took place recently in Mallorca, offering players up to three weeks of high-level competition under the late summer Mediterranean sun, staged in association with Patricio Travel. A total of 92 teams and 470 players took to the courts of Son Bessó to fight for the coveted European Club Championship titles, while 301 players from 30 countries faced off at the European Individual Championships. The first of the three weeks of competition saw the more senior age groups in action for the Club Championship event. Lagardere Paris Racing wasted no time in extending their dominance of the Women’s 65 competition, adding to a win streak in this age category that stretches back to 2011 with victory over Royal Leopold of Belgium.

In the Men’s 60 competition, Sergiev Posad of Russia defended the title won when the age category was last held two years ago, with a 3-1 win over Leicestershire of Great Britain.

Having finished as runners-up in both age categories last year, TC Blau Weiss Furstenzell were once again amongst the leading protagonists in the Mens 50 and 55 events, recapturing the 50 title last won in 2015, and repeating as silver medallists in the 55.

A piece of history was made by Ljan TK in the Men’s 70 event, as they became the first ever Norwegian club to win a European Club Championship title.

European Senior Championships

Following a one-week break during which the European Senior Individual Championships were played, the Club Championships returned with the younger age groups in action and new champions crowed in all age categories with several of last year’s winners having to settle for silver medals this time. The Women’s 40 event produced a home champion as Club Español de Tenis de Rocafort emerged from two distinct phases of round-robin competitions to beat Club Nomentano of Italy into second place. The Women’s 50 event saw Club de Campo de Villa de Madrid (ESP) just fail to defend the title they won at last

Sandwiched between the two weeks of the Club Championships was the sixth edition of the European Senior Championships. A Grade B1 event on the ITF Senior Circuit offering 240 points to the winners, this is the most prestigious of European tournaments. The event yielded champions from 11 different nations, including three from the host country; Rosa-Maria Andres Rodriguez (Women’s 40), Adelaida Torrens Vallhonrat (Women’s 75) and Jorge Camina Borda (Men’s 70), one of four ITF world #1s to be taking part. Several players defended the titles that they won last year in Sofia, with Alexander Windisch (GER, M45), Karl Pansy (AUT, M55), Peter Pokorny (AUT, M75) and Silvia Bauwens (GER, W70) all repeat winners. Harald Hellmonseder (AUT, M60) and Liselot Prechtel (NED, W55) each won for a second consecutive year, claiming a first title in a new age category. Amongst the players to claim their maiden European titles were former professional Gabriel Moraru of Romania, who claimed the Men’s 35 title, Kasper Warming of Denmark (Men’s 40) and Liina Suurvarik of Estonia. The event even saw action from a former ATP Tour Top 5 player, as Jiri Novak partnered his friend and Czech compatriot Roman Vik to the semi-finals of the Men’s 40 doubles competition.

The format change is in addition to a series of other previously-announced reforms, including a reduction of pre-tie commitments for players, finalists (also in Fed Cup) being given the choice of hosting their first round tie in the following year, and a reduction of practice court requirements. The Grand Slam Board has announced a series of planned changes to rules and regulations, due to take effect in time for the 2018 season. They include stricter enforcement of warm-up times, the possibility of fines for players retiring during first round matches, and a return to 16 seeds (scheduled for 2019).

Centenary Tennis Clubs Competitions 2017 The 2017 Centenary Tennis Clubs Association competition calendar concluded recently after a busy summer which saw teams from many of the world’s best known clubs taking part in senior and junior competitions. While friendly events have been held across four continents, the bulk of the Association’s competitive events took place in Europe. As always, the highlight of the CTC competitions was the Winners’ Group, which united the champions of the previous year’s senior events at one location to battle for the CTC’s most prestigious title. This year’s Winners’ Group took place at Athens LTC in Greece from September 22-24 and saw the host club battle it out with Club de Polo de Barcelona, Tennis Club de Genève and defending champions I. Cesky Lawn-Tennis Klub Praha. The latter two teams advanced to the final, where the Czechs successfully retained their crown, scoring a 4-2 win over their Swiss opponents. I.CLTK will try to win a hat trick of Winners’ Group titles in 2018 against strong competition from this year’s other group winners. HLTC Leimonias were home champions in the Hague, beating Fitzwilliam (IRL) to top the group that also included Rot-Weiss Berlin and CT Bologna. Kung LTK of Stockholm won a hard-fought competition at Wiener Park in Austria to emerge triumphant after a tight loss to the host team and a 9/0 win over Carrickmines (IRL). Finally Malahide LTCC edged past Le Tir of Paris when they hosted the team in Dublin following some unfortunate withdrawals. As usual, junior events were also a main focus of the CTC calendar. The Under 12 Carrickmines Cup in Dublin saw five visiting teams in action, with the hosts eventually retaining their title after tight matches against I.CLTK and Salk (SWE). I.CLTK in turn hosted five teams in Prague for the Under 14 I.CLTK Cup in September. The Czechs have dominat-

ed the event in recent years and this edition was no exception, as the hosts scored wins over Cumberland LTC (GBR) and Kung LTK to retain the title. The win marked a second Under 14 title for the Czech team, as one month earlier they had successfully defended the RCTB-1899 Cup at the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona, which was also attended by teams from Carrickmines, Roehampton (GBR) and RC Polo (ESP).

The CTC recently celebrated its 21st Annual General Meeting, where it admitted another five clubs to the Association, bringing its total membership to 71. The last of the junior competitions to be completed was the Under 16 event, which saw Edgbaston Priory Lawn Tennis Club (GBR) host RC Polo and Fitzwilliam LTC as the calendar crept into October. Looking ahead, 2018 looks set to be another year of growth, with member clubs including West Side Tennis Club (USA), Carrickmines, I.CLTK Prague, Royal Leopold (BEL), Roehampton, RCTB-1899 and Edgbaston Priory amongst those to have already committed to staging events. The CTC is an umbrella group of clubs that are more than 100 years old, including some of the prestigious and bestknown clubs in the sport. Initially founded by eight members as a pan-European association, the organisation now has an extensive and truly global membership and is affiliated to Tennis Europe and recognised by the sport’s governing body, the International Tennis Federation. The Association recently held its 21st Annual General Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, where it welcomed five new clubs into its fold; Montecarlo Country Club (Monaco), Northern Tennis Club Didsbury (Great Britain), Lawn Tennis Club Festina (Netherlands), America Tennis Club (Colombia), and Seattle Tennis Club (United States). This brings the total number of member clubs to a new record high of 71.
