President Ivo Kaderka: “I dream of a united family of tennis nations.” With Mr. Kaderka and the current Tennis Europe Board of Management into the final months of their electoral term, we took this opportunity to ask him to reflect on the past three years… As we reach the end of your mandate, how successful do you think you have been in achieving your goals? I am happy with all the things that we have achieved. We have managed to secure more sponsors than ever before, we have more tournaments than ever, we’ve undertaken a complete review of our governance, and we have a unified, productive Board of Management. When I was elected as President, Tennis Europe had some divisions and my priority was to ensure the unity of the European tennis family, and to restore the spirit of cooperation, which had got a bit lost. I feel that we are much more united now, working hard and looking to the future together. Not only is the Board of Management unified, but I feel that the nations too are working increasingly closely together. Ultimately, Tennis Europe is a community, a family, and this was my goal – to ensure a strong, united family. What would you say have been the major successes? Through the COVID relief fund and our President’s Fund, we’ve been able to provide rapid relief to nations that were struggling. But we have also brought a lot of new ideas to the table in this term. At the last AGM, the nations voted to implement our new, modern constitution and Code of Ethics. This is a great step forward for Tennis Europe, and I must acknowledge the role of Jordi Tamayo De Winne, plus the support of the ITF and legal experts from our member nations. We’ve introduced a Gender Equality Committee and implemented a gender quota to the Board of Management. There are now also fixed seats for smaller nations on the Board.
to be taken, more cancellations and venue changes, such as shifting the European Junior Championships first to Prerov, in Czech Republic, and then to its new home in Parma, Italy. With this Board, you introduced a new approach, assigning specific roles and responsibilities to each Board member. Why? Well, I think that division of labour is very important. The current Board is very diverse in terms of experience and knowledge. They are leaders in their fields, so I think it was a very good decision, I would like to continue with that. Shortly after the last election, we consulted with member nations to enquire about their needs and their expectations and this ongoing dialogue has informed all subsequent decisions. With each committee Chair responsible for a group of experts from member nations, I believe we have achieved an intersection of the highest possible democracy and the highest possible professionalism. We have done our best to ensure that as many nations as possible are represented and involved.
On a business level, we’ve managed to secure several new sponsors and to renew our agreements with existing ones, despite the challenging financial times. We established the Tennis Europe Academy in Prostejov which has been a great support for developing nations. We’ve created high profile events, like the 12 & Under Festival at the Rafa Nadal Academy and have given a new lease of life to others, such as the Junior Masters in Monte-Carlo, which goes from strength to strength. We’ve invested heavily in digitalisation and have produced a world class app with live scoring and live streaming from the Junior Tour.
Our Stakeholder Engagement Task Force, which is led by Roger Davids, is a perfect example of how we have been listening closely to our members, with a series of interactive workshops that have been appreciated by all. The Gender Equality Committee, led by Florence Alix-Gravellier, has been groundbreaking for Tennis Europe and long overdue. Cem Tinaz, the Development Committee Chair, has taken the lead on preparing guidelines for member nations on topics including Sustainability and Diversity and Inclusion. These are just a few examples - all the Board members have had their own tasks and responsibilities, and all have delivered, I am very proud of their contributions.
What were some of the challenges? Early on, we faced some unprecedented times. Nobody could have predicted something like the COVID pandemic, it changed everything – the way we work and interact. Like all organisations, we had to adapt quickly, and I think we managed. Then came the terrible war in Ukraine. There were many decisions
You mentioned the President’s Fund, which was established to enable Tennis Europe to provide grants to member nations in need for specific projects. What has been the reaction to this Fund? We’ve had very strong, appreciative feedback. I have many telephone calls and messages from federations, particu-

I promised in my first speech as president that one of my priorities would be to find extra income to support this, and I am happy to say that we managed. In the past couple of months, we’ve been able to provide grants to 22 of the 32 eligible member nations to assist with all kinds of projects [see Page 4].
I wake up in the morning thinking about tennis, and I go to sleep at night thinking about tennis. It’s my life...and I want to help everybody as much as I can. You’ve been the President of Czech Tennis for 26 years and are now completing a first term as Tennis Europe President. What motivates you to continue? I can only explain it like this: I wake up in the morning thinking about tennis, and I go to sleep at night thinking about tennis.
It’s my life. I feel that I have a lot of energy, and I want to help everybody in European tennis as much as I can. As President, I have been able to make a difference, and to help many European nations in their daily work. It’s true that I have had very good results in the Czech Republic: we are a small country with a small economy, but a very strong federation and I think that this experience allows me to bring a lot to Tennis Europe, which also must be strong. What is your vision for the future of Tennis Europe? We have a clear strategy, and I set out to achieve reasonable things: more help to small nations, to work closely with the ITF, to continue the development of the sport, to keep strengthening junior tennis with new competitions and innovations. And of course, the most important part – to generate more income for the organisation. I’m a positive thinker with a lot of positive energy and blessed to have perfect colleagues and friends. Thanks to their support we are a very strong team and I’d like to continue to work to ensure that a united Europe is the strongest region in the tennis world.

Monte-Carlo Hosts Spectacular Edition of the Junior Masters

The 2023 Tennis Europe Junior Masters returned to the Monte-Carlo Country Club for a third consecutive year from 2-5 November. Not even the rain could take away from what was a phenomenal, action-packed event on and off the courts. From the impressive displays of tennis to the myriad side-events, the Masters has gone from strength to strength in Monaco, and this year’s tournament was one of the most exciting yet. With an extra day of play, this year’s event also brought a change of format: round robin group stages from which the two group winners advanced to the final. This certainly livened up proceedings and meant that after day 1 every player was still in with a chance of winning a coveted gold medal. In the end, there could only be four winners and as it turned out each deserving champion came with their own special back stories to make their wins even more poignant.
Boys 16 champion Kolos Kincses (HUN).
BOYS 16 Hungary’s Kolos Kincses picked up his biggest title to date with a convincing win over rival Linus Lagerbohm in the final. It was a coming-of-age story for Kincses, who became the third Hungarian boy to win the 16 & Under title. Having been at the top end of the Race to Monte-Carlo for most of the year he had, by his own admission, had some tough losses in early rounds of big tournaments to some dangerous floaters. Now it was his time. With his hopes of victory scuppered at the Super Category event in Milan and the European Junior Championships, he was laser-focused on his mission to bag the title in Monte-Carlo. Kincses won all his group stage matches in straight sets and after an understandably nervous start, he lifted his game and came back in the final. Kincses hit his stride late in the first set and rode out the wave to score a straight sets 7-6(6) 6-1 win over European silver-medallist Linus Lagerbohm, avenging his loss in Parma to the Finn. “It was a perfect way to end my Tennis Europe career,” he said.
GIRLS 16 Jeline Vandromme was the surprise package in Parma, coming out of relative obscurity to clinch the European Junior title and to qualify directly for the Junior Masters. Her spectacularly big, precise, and clean hitting saw her cruise to the final, again without the loss of a set. Despite a second-set lapse of concentration in the final, she managed to keep a clean sheet for the entire event by simply outplaying Gala Ivanovic (SRB) 6-0 7-5 to win the Junior Masters title. With this win, she became the first girl in over a decade to win Tennis Europe’s two most prestigious 16 & Under

titles in the same year (Sara Sorribes last achieved the feat in 2012). She also became the first Belgian girl to win since former world #1 Kim Clijsters took the title in 1997. While Ivanovic may have been disappointed, she can be proud of a season in which she earned three titles from five finals, and was one of four players from Serbia to qualify for the elite event.
BOYS 14 Daniel Jade’s story started in Lebanon where he was born and had been training from a young age, but a move to France has seen the promising youngster hone his tennis skills. The European Junior Championships silver medalist came through two tough three-setters in the group stage to qualify for the final. He peaked when it mattered most and was simply too strong in the final against Kaan Isik

Kosaner (TUR). From the outset he was hitting winners from all corners of the court and breaking the rhythm with his self-described “Alcaraz-inspired” drop shots, including on match point. The 6-1 6-1 win capped a stunning season for the French #1. Having started the year as runner-up at Les Petits As, he went on to win the Category 1 tournament in Paris before finishing as runner-up in Most. Plenty of well-known faces, talent scouts and agents were spotted around the club during the tournament, keen to get a look at the next crop of tennis stars. Super coach Darren Cahill was one such spectator. Visiting the event for the first time, he told us he was impressed by the level of play and the event itself: “It’s fascinating to see some of the best 14 and 16 & Unders in the world playing for something so special … these kids are shooting all year for a chance to play at this venue against the best, so it’s a wonderful concept.” About the talent, he added, “The players are great. It’s amazing how much every generation improves. They’re sliding all over the place, hitting slice backhands, coming to the net, serving kick serves and moving incredibly well. The level is fantastic.” Tennis Europe’s Junior Committee also met at the event to plan the 2024 season. After the meeting, led by Chair Razvan Itu, the members were able to see the players in action.

first set, blasting a series of forehand winners to take the ninth game before serving out for the set. The second set was a breeze as the Czech player had all the answers to anything Kostecka could throw at her, sealing a 6-4 6-1 win in 90 minutes to claim her fourth title of the year. The Pole was one of the surprises of the tournament. Having entered the line-up at the last minute after a withdrawal, the #13 impressed throughout the week, winning all three round-robin matches in straight sets to reach her first final of the season on the biggest of stages.
OFF-COURT There was plenty for players to do off-court while taking in the beauty of one of the world’s most iconic tennis venues. The eve of the tournament saw a special session of the Tenis Europe Junior School, where players received a special welcome message from WTA star Paula Badosa, before learning about topics including ‘the Tennis Family’, ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ and ‘Media’. A mobile Athlete Performance Centre was on site for players to use. Four Masters players, Sofie Hettlerova (CZE),
The event was broadcast live on the Tennis Channel in several key markets and was also streamed live on the Tennis Europe website and on the Junior Tour app, where over 15,000 people tuned into the action during the week. This year’s Masters also served as a pilot event for Tennis Europe’s Sustainability Initiative. Amongst the measures taken to reduce the carbon footprint of the tournament were the use of bamboo materials in hospitality areas and banning of single-use plastics. Players, coaches and staff were encouraged to recycle more, with various recycling points made available around the venue. Sponsors Dunlop pledged to re-use all balls from the tournament, and Waterdrop generously gifted the players, coaches and staff with an elegant new water bottle which could be re-filled at courtside water fountains. The Mouratoglou Academy once again supported the event by offering each champion a one-week stay at Europe’s leading academy, to be taken in 2024. Tennis Europe thanks the Monte-Carlo Country Club, the Fédération Monégasque de Tennis and President Melanie-Antoinette De Massey for the continued cooperation, and is already looking forward the next edition. Baranes and Vukovic celebrate 12&U Festival wins Daniel Baranes and Mario Vukovic are the winners of the third 12 & Under Festival, a unique season-ending invitational event for Europe’s top performing players of the age group. Held at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar in Manacor, Mallorca, the Festival provides its players with an elite competition combined with a week of entertaining off court activities designed to celebrate their achievements throughout the year. Baranes won an entertaining 2-hour battle with Britain’s Megan Knight in the girls’ final. The Israeli looked to be in the driving seat when she broke in the 11th game of the first set and went on a four-game run to establish a lead of a set and a break. Knight – who won their only previous encounter in Auray earlier this year for the loss of just two games – fought back to level the match with a tie break in the second. The title was decided by marathon 22-point champions’ tie-break, which Baranes eventually secured on her fourth match point. Knight made it all the way to the final without the loss of a set, conceding just four games in six matches before her semi-final against Grace Bernstein. The Swede – playing at the 12 & Under Festival for a second time – pushed her hard in the second set of a 2-6 6-7 defeat. Baranes reached the finals of two Cat.1 12 & Under events in 2023 and claimed her first 14 & Under Tour title (in doubles, at Limassol). Having appeared on the victorious Israeli Summer Cups winning team, arguably her most notable achievement until now was a high-quality semi-final win over tournament favourite Darina Matvejeva. Incredibly, the Latvian had gone unbeaten throughout the entire season in singles, establishing a 46-0 win/loss record, includ-

ing two comfortable wins over Baranes. On this occasion though the Israeli fought hard, keeping the match close and hitting some brave winners during both tie breaks of a 7-6 7-6 win. The boys’ final between Mario Vukovic and Max Lorincik was the first meeting between the two players, though both had been on the national teams during the Summer Cups final, in which France defeated Slovakia back in August. Vukovic struck first, breaking in the tenth game to take the first set 6-4. Lorincik then reeled off three games in a row to start the second set and seemed to have the set under control. Using some clever changes of pace, the French boy struck back, embarking on a six game run of his own, clinching the title on his first match point, 6-4 6-3. Vukovic was in control from the very start of the tournament, registering five consecutive straight sets wins to reach the final, including a 6-3 6-0 dismissal of Francisco Sardinha (POR) in their semi-final on Friday. Lorincik could have been forgiven for being tired, having survived an epic semi-final on Friday evening when he edged past Vencel Fazekas (HUN) 7-5 2-6 10-6. Apart from that hiccup his run to the final was also smooth, topping his round-robin group after three comfortable wins. The win marks Vukovic’s first singles tournament victory since Passagespoirs early in the season.

Following the singles finals, the players in action were greeted by their host and hero, the former world #1 Rafa Nadal, who congratulated them on their performances, expressed his hopes that they had enjoyed their time at the facilities, and encouraged them to keep working hard in the future. The doubles events finished on Friday night, with both matches highlighting the versatility of the singles finalists. The girls’ final saw Megan Knight team with the player she beat in the singles semi-finals earlier that day, Grace Bernstein of Sweden. There were no hard feelings between the pair though, as they combined effortlessly for a routine 6-2 6-3 win over Daniel Baranes and her partner Lou Sciacaluga (FRA). Prior to his singles final, Vukovic had already tasted gold with victory in the doubles event. Teaming with compatriot Thomas Grévoul, the pair fought back from the loss of the first set to beat Francisco Sardinha and his partner Mikael Lehtinen (FIN) 3-6 6-2 12-10 after a nail-biting finish under the lights.

Mr. Hammerl commented, “In just three years, this tournament has become Europe’s event of reference for players aged 12 & Under, who make it their goal to qualify for an invitation to play in Mallorca from the beginning of the season. We’d like to thank everybody here at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar for working so hard to ensure that the players have a memorable experience; this is truly a week that they will never forget. We’ve seen tennis of an exceptionally high level here this week without losing the emphasis on fun, and we’re already looking forward to the next edition.
While the players made the most of on-court luxuries such as ball kids, line judges and umpires throughout the event, there were also plenty of off-court attractions provided by the hosts to ensure the ‘Festival’ atmosphere.

Vandromme and Engel claim European 16 & Under titles

Jeline Vandromme and Justin Engel are the new European 16 & Under champions after both players put in impressive performances on the finals’ day to secure the biggest titles of their young careers. The girls’ final was a battle between the 12th and 13th seeds, both of whom had scored a succession of upsets to reach the final. In the semi-finals, Vandromme had shocked the tournament’s top seed Teodora Kostovic (SRB) for the loss of just two games, while her opponent Mia Pohankova had earlier ended the hopes of second seed Charo Esquiva Bañuls (ESP) and third seed Rositsa Dencheva (BUL). In the final, the two players were inseparable early on until Vandromme broke to seal the set in the tenth game. The second set saw Pohankova – still 14 and one of the youngest players in the draw – begin to make more unforced errors, with the Belgian in the driving seat throughout as she served out for a 6-4 6-3 win.
Jeline Vandromme (BEL) during the girls singles final.
Incredibly, this was Vandromme’s first appearance at a Tennis Europe Junior Tour individual event. Earlier this year, she competed for her country twice in team events – at the Winter and Summer Cups, and coincidentally ran into Pohankova in both competitions. The Slovak won their first match in three sets in February while Vandromme levelled the head-to-head with a 6-3 7-6 win at the Summer Cups in August. The Antwerp resident becomes the first ever Belgian girl to win a European 16 & Under title, and follows in the footsteps of former world #1 Justine Henin, the 14 & Under champion in 1996. “It feels great, I’m really happy to win this title,”, she said. “It was the first time playing a tournament like this for me, and to play the final and win the title is amazing.” Pohankova meanwhile has the consolation of a second silver medal, adding to last year’s 14 & Under runner-up spot.
Doubles finalists.
The boys’ final saw Justin Engel emerge triumphant from a hard fought 7-5 7-6(4) battle with Linus Lagerbohm of Finland. A seesaw hour-long first set saw the fourth seeded German lead 4-2 before losing three games in a row. Under pressure, he recovered to thread together three games of his own. Despite having treatment for an abdominal injury in the second set, Engel was able to maintain the upper hand with a dominant performance on serve, scoring 9 aces to his opponent’s 1 and winning 73% of his first serve points. “I played better in the most important moments, maybe that was the difference”, Engel told us. “It’s a great feeling to win this and gives me a lot of confidence. I hope to move on and play like this every week.”

Israel & France dominate to win 12&U Summer Cups titles The 2023 12 & Under European Summer Cups by Dunlop Finals have been won by Israel (girls) and France (boys). Writing their names into the history books, the Israeli girls took home the first ever European team title for their nation - in either Summer or Winter Cups. The French boys on the other hand add to a plethora of titles already won in the other team competitions. In this particular event, it is the third title for the team. The final rounds of both events were held in France with the collaboration of the Fédération Française de Tennis. The girls played in the Corsican capital of Ajaccio, while the boys played in Dijon, in the Burgundy region.

Podium.
After the first two days of play, team Israel was the only nation to have secured two wins, with every other team, having a win-loss of 1-1. Slovakia notched their second win, but Israel’s 3-0 victory over Italy sent them through to the final as undefeated group winners.
Girls - Group B (Czechia, France, Great Britain, Spain) It was the same case for Great Britain, being the only team with two wins after two days. Their 2-1 win over Czechia secured their undefeated path to the final.
Boys - Group A (Czechia, France, Germany, Hungary) On home soil, and in hot form, the French boys were clear winners of this group. Undefeated and unrelenting in three straight rounds, they were inspired, making a statement and winning all three of their ties 3-0.
Boys champions France.
Boys - Group B (Belgium, Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain) The first match turned out to be the decider: Slovakia were made to fight against their Belgian opponents in the first tie, with a 2-1 victory coming in the decisive doubles. This proved to be a key victory as both teams won their next two ties 3-0 and 2-1, meaning that the vital win on day 1 was what had secured Slovakia their spot in the final.

The doubles match between Baranes & Daniel Blustein against Knight & Zingg was not played, with young team already celebrating the well-earned honour of taking home the first European junior team trophy for Israel. The girls from Czechia and the Italian boys have won this year’s edition of the European Summer Cups. It’s the fifth trophy for the Italian boys, while the girls claimed the seventh title for Czechia (plus four previous wins as Czechoslovakia).
BOROTRA CUP: BOYS’ FINAL CZECHIA vs ITALY - Le Touquet, France After claiming the silver medal last year, Italy is taking home the gold this time. The first match of the day between Andrea de Marchi (ITA) and Jan Kumstat (CZE) started in favor of the Czech player, yet the Italian managed to turn the game around to his advantage, ultimately winning with a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. As for his compatriot Federico Cina, who had faced Czech Maxim Mrva five times before, he secured victory in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. While the Czechs claimed the title two years ago, Italy hadn’t won it since 2012.

Upsets & Highlights Boys: Second seeded Greece was upset by an unseeded French team in the first round of Zone C qualifying. Andreas Messis, holder of two TEJT titles and number 3 in the Race earlier in the season, and Stefanos Pournaropoulous lost their singles before France won the doubles to seal the deal 3-0. Boys: Portugal, although unseeded, did not pick Race frontrunner Joao Morgado to play in the singles matches against Spain and lost both singles rubbers in round 2 of Zone D qualifying. Morgado was slated to play the doubles, but the dead rubber was forfeited by Spain, as they advanced 2-1 winners. Girls: France was upset early on in the girls’ event. Katarina Kujovic (273) fell to Eleejah Inisan (83) then Jeline Vandromme (33) took out Daphnee Mpetshi Perricard (24) to even it up for the Belgians. The four returned to the court and it was the Belgians who outplayed their neighbours in the deciding doubles rubber of the opening round of Zone B qualifying.

ers might have had reason to fear the Czech squad – and for good reason. They advanced to the final with only one lost match during the qualifying rounds. Laura Samsonova strengthened her team’s advantage by swiftly defeating Hannah Klugman (GBR) with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Samsonova then handed over the reins to Kovackova, who delivered a strong performance and secured a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Mingge Xu. Belgium and Bulgaria claim 18&U Summer Cups titles
MER CU
The Belgian boys and the girls from Bulgaria have won this year’s edition of the 18&U European Summer Cups. It’s the first title for Belgium, while for the Bulgarian girls this is their second consecutive trophy. In more historic news, the Summer Cups in Granville (girls) coincides with the centenary celebrations of the host club, which has been the venue of the Summer Cups finals for over 50 years, and has seen participation from some of the greats of the game.
VALERIO/GALEA CUP: BOYS’ FINAL FRANCE vs BELGIUM - Rome, Italy Last year, Belgium reached the final but fell to France. However, this year the Belgian boys redeemed themselves and demonstrated that they wouldn’t leave Rome without the gold. Alexander Blockx defeated Gabriel Debru 6-3, 6-4. Although the score might not suggest it, they engaged in an intense match that lasted for 1 hour and 46 minutes. Similarly, Gilles Arnaud Bailly didn’t allow his opponent to win a set and secured the victory 7-5, 6-1.
Valerio/Galea Cup champions Belgium.

Upsets & Highlights Girls: Seeded first and fourth respectively, the Slovakia-Spain match in the semis of the final rounds was always going to be a mouth-watering prospect. Winner of the ITF J300 in Roehampton and Junior Wimbledon semi-finalist Renata Jamrichova was first up against recent European Junior Championship gold medalist Ariana Geerlings. The match went all the way, with the Slovak taking the third set 6-4. Nina Vargova had an easier time, dispatching last year’s 16&U EJC silver medalist Marta Soriano in straight sets. Boys: More sad news for Spain as their boys’ team was upset at the first hurdle in the Final rounds. The unseeded and unheralded Italians played with a home-court advantage: Federico Bondioli was too strong for Alejandro Melero, winning their three-set tussle. Fabio de Michele then took care of business against 16&U EJC silver medalist (2022) Martin Landaluce in straight sets. The luck of the locals ran out in the following round as top seeds France dashed any hope of a home final for the Italians.
Soisbault/Reina Cup champions Bulgaria.

At their second consecutive final, the Bulgarian girls knew what it takes to claim the Summer Cups trophy. First on the court was Rositsa Dencheva, who won against European Junior Championships finalist Nina Vargova 6-3, 6-3. With a boost of confidence given by her compatriot, Iva Ivanova faced Renata Jamrichova and won 7-5, 6-3. Thus, they didn’t have to play doubles to determine the verdict: the Bulgarians - this year’s gold medallists.

Cyprus hosts European Officiating Conference The 2023 European Officiating Conference was held in Larnaca, Cyprus from 5 to 6 December. Officiating managers from 22 Tennis Europe member nations were joined by representatives from the ITF, Tennis Europe and the International Tennis Integrity Agency at the two-day event. The meeting consisted of group discussions, sharing of the latest knowledge and best practices and presentations from renowned names from the field of officiating. The Cyprus Tennis Federation hosted the event for the first time, becoming the first ‘small state’ to do so, and President Demetris Leontis explained, “It was a great pleasure for us to stage this event. We place a great emphasis on the continual improvement of our referees and officiating in general, and this has been an ideal opportunity to work closely with Tennis Europe and the ITF and to assist other member nations.”
George Vassiliades, Thomas Hammerl, Demetris Leontis, Zarko Popovic.
During the official dinner, a special award was presented to George Vassiliades in recognition of the Cypriot officiating pioneer’s lifetime achievements. Cyprus’ first ever certified referee, he has worked with the federation for over 20 years, mentoring generations of officials and working at Grand Slam events and the Olympic Games.
Conference delegates
ITF Head of Officiating Iain Smith said, “ITF Officiating is happy to support new initiatives such as the Small States project. One of the collective goals with the Regional Officer for Europe and Tennis Europe was to host the European Conference in one of the small states along with the White Badge Referee School. Thank you to all the del-
egates for attending and contributing during the various round table sessions. Congratulations to the Cyprus Tennis Federation, in particular Zarko Popovic (Cyprus Officiating Manager) for his vision, hard work and commitment, and to Tennis Europe for making this possible. We look forward to the conference in 2024.”

Record participation at European Senior Club Championships Over 500 players representing a record 105 clubs took part in the region’s premier senior team tennis competition, the European Senior Club Championships. Held at the Megasaray Club Belek in Antalya, Türkiye, the event has gone from strength to strength in recent years and saw some high drama as the teams – who travelled from a total of 16 countries - battled to win their clubs a prestigious European title. Launched in 1983, the format of the competition features ‘best of three’ women’s ties (two singles and one doubles match) and ‘best of five’ men’s (three singles and two doubles - except in the Over 70s categories).
M40 winners - San Vendemiano (ITA).
Week 1 saw age groups 30+ to 50+ in action, and there were some notable participants on court as the club players relished the opportunity to take to the court against some experienced former top professionals. Having reached the 45s final in 2018 and 2019, TC St. Valentin of Austria sent their big guns to the competition post-pandemic and successfully claimed the title last year. They were back again in force in 2023, defending the title with a 3-2 win over CT Barcino of Spain in the final. The team included several former ATP stars, including Top 20 players Stefan Koubek and Bohdan Ulihrach, and former Top 15 doubles player Frantisek Cermak, all of whom said that they were pleased to have taken part in the event and enjoyed being able to compete in the warm November sun. Team captain Anton Lausegger explained to us the importance of this event for his club and why the strong squad was eager to participate. Elsewhere, TC Roehampton (GBR) picked up a first European title since 2010, claiming first place in their round-robin 30s competition over local team ATIK. The 35s crown went to Switzerland’s TC Bonmouth, who fielded a strong team featuring former pros Georges Bastl and Stephane Robert.
W55 winners - Zekeriyaköy Spor Külübü (TUR).
The Men’s 40s podium saw a reversal of last year’s result, as defending champions Mete Tenis Kulübü were pipped to the top spot by Italy’s TC San Vandemiano. The Men’s 50s event saw new champions as last year’s winners Argayon TC of Belgium were deposed in the final 3-2 by home team Aydınlar Tenis Spor Kulübü.
WOMEN The women’s competitions were every bit as competitive as the men’s, with brand new champions crowned in all age categories. Teams from the host nation did exceptionally well in the first week. There was an all-Turkish final in the 30s event, where local favourites Antalya Tenis Ihtisas ve Spor Kulubu beat the team from Sealra. The defending 50s champions had to be content with a silver medal on this occasion as home team Zekeriyaköy Spor Külübü (TUR) edged Byfleet LTC (GBR) for the title.
W45 winner - Campo Villa de Madrid (ESP).
The 35s event saw an upset in the final, where France’s ASM Tennis ended RCT Barcelona-1899’s hopes of defending their title with a 2-1 win. In the Over 40s, 2022 champions Hazelwood LTC (GBR) were beaten 3-0 in a rematch of last year’s final, ceding their crown to ASD Borgotrebbia (ITA). TENNIS EUROPE NEWS

Record participation at European Senior Club Championships The Ladies from Club Campo Villa de Madrid in Spain kept alive their feat of reaching a final every year since 2013, wrapping up a fourth title overall, and first in the Over 45s category, with a 2-1 win over Reuil Athletic Tennis Club of France.
WEEK 2 Continuing with the ladies’ events, there was further success for home players as Zekeriyaköy Spor Kulübü became the first Turkish team to win a Womens 55 title, adding to their 50s title earned just days before. Their final match against CC Villa de Madrid left both clubs with the rare opportunity to win multiple European titles in the same year and it was the Turks who claimed the honours. Byfleet LTC (GBR) made it home victorious for the third time in the last four editions of the ESCC, claiming the Womens 65+ event for the first time. There was further success for Great Britain in the Womens 70+ tournament, where The 45 Seniors Club beat Rivoli 2000 of Italy.
M45 winners - St. Valentin (AUT).
MEN The second week saw double joy for Italian teams: ASD Country Time Club of Palermo beat Argayon of Belgium in the Men’s 55s final, while the Men’s 60s final was a repeat of last year’s decider, and produced the same result: Natisone ASD (ITA) defended their title with a win over TC Warmbach-Villach (AUT). Stade Français Paris picked up its first ever European title in the Mens 65s, beating St. George’s Hill of Great Britain in the final.
FINAL STANDINGS
Belgium’s TC Longchamps successfully defended the M70 crown, beating Levent Tenis Kulübü Derneği (TUR) into second place in their round-robin group.
M65 winners - Stade Français Paris (FRA).
The hosting Turkish Tennis Federation can be satisfied with the best-ever performance of clubs from the nation, as Türkiye secured four European titles and a further five runner-up spots. Italy also won four titles, with Great Britain in third place overall with three.

World #1s defend titles at European Beach Tennis Championships The European Beach Tennis Championships returned to the shores of Crete this year. Hosted by the Hellenic Tennis Federation, the event featured 20 Tennis Europe member nations, creating an exciting atmosphere for players and spectators alike. Every year there’s an element of surprise, and this year’s curiosity was that teams from France, Italy and Spain managed to secure both the silver and gold medals in the men’s women’s and mixed competitions respectively after the semifinal rounds. The tournament has also established a tradition of welcoming high-ranking players on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour, and this year was no exception. The current men’s world #1 Nicolas Gianotti (FRA) and women’s #1 Giulia Gasparri (ITA) both returned to Crete and managed to defend their titles from 2022.
MEN’S DOUBLES Nicolas Gianotti and Mathieu Guegano were the top seeds in the men’s doubles draw and maintained their top position throughout the tournament. In the final, they faced their compatriots Paul Gotarda and Theo Irigaray. While Gianotti and Irigaray aimed to defend their gold from the previous year, this time they found themselves on opposite sides of the net. However, Gianotti and Guegano proved to be the stronger team in the final and secured victory with a score of 6-1, 7-6(2). “I’m very happy to win again!”, said Gianotti after the match. “It feels incredible to with another partner as well, with Guegano. Greece is a great place for me, I enjoy playing here!” Gold: Nicolas Gianotti/Mathieu Guegano (FRA) d.
Paul Gotarda/Theo Irigaray (FRA) 6-1 7-6(2). Bronze: Doriano Beccaccioli/Tommaso Giovannini (ITA) d. Pol Filella/Gerard Torres Palos (ESP) 6-4 6-2.
Women’s Champions.
WOMEN’S DOUBLES The second title defence of the day was achieved by Giulia Gasparri, paired with Elena Francesconi. In the all-Italian final against Nicole Nobile and Flaminia Daina, they displayed dominance and were declared champions after a 6-2, 6-3 match. Gasparri adds this medal to her collection of four golds and three silvers claimed in previous women’s competitions, while for the 17-year-old Francesconi, this marks the first medal of her career. Commenting on the win, Gasparri said, “First of all I would like to congratulate the Hellenic Federation for the hospitality and Tennis Europe for organizing this event. What can I say, this place is lucky for me, I’m happy to have won this gold medal with a young under 18 player and I congratulate her for the tournament and for the season that she played. Personally, I gained another personal satisfaction and I’m proud of it” Gold: Giulia Gasparri/Elena Francesconi (ITA) d. Nicole Nobile/Flaminia Daina (ITA) 6-2 6-3. Bronze: Ariadna Costa Graell/Eva Fernandez Palos (ESP) d. Sabrina Lopez Garcia/Omaira Farias (ESP) 6-1 6-1.

Men’s Champions.
The mixed doubles final was the most intense match of the day, culminating in a match tiebreak. Spaniards Eva Fernandez Palos and Antonio Miguel Ramos Viera were determined not to let their compatriots, Ariadna Costa Graell and Gerard Rodriguez Querol, take home the gold, battling fiercely until the last point. With a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 10-6, Fernandez Palos and Ramos Viera emerged as the victors. This marks their second gold

In the Spotlight… Kolos Kincses Kolos Kincses has been one of the leading names on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour since 2019, when he made his first appearance on the 12 & Under circuit. Since then, the #1 Hungarian has reached a current high of #5 on the rankings thanks in no small part to his achievements this year. His list of accomplishments on the Tour is impressive and the numbers speak for themselves: 5 years on tour, 28 finals, 10 singles titles and 10 doubles titles. TE: First and foremost, congratulations on your win here in Monte-Carlo! On the same court you won the Kinder Trophy 4 years ago! How does this feel? KK: Thank you very much! Well, I played tennis tournaments at the beginning of the year. I won two of them and we also qualified for the finals with the Hungarian national team at the Winter Cups, so I booked my place for the Masters. I think it’s the best way to end my Tennis Europe career: here and with a win!
Biography Age:16 (born February 2007) Place of Birth: Budapest, Hungary Residence: Budapest, Hungary Plays: Right-handed; double-handed backhand Height: 189cm Weight: 71kg TE Singles Career Win/Loss: 116/44 (72.5%) TE 2023 Singles Win/Loss: 28/5 (84.8%)
That’s pretty good! We’re going to be sad to see you go! Just to go back to when you started, how did you first hear about the TEJT? I think I started really early. I was 10 or 11 years old when I first played Tennis Europe and then I went by year by year, country by country. I had some good results. My highest 14&U Tennis Europe ranking was Top 10 and then under 16 top 10 as well. Yes, you’ve always been near the top. Your name has always been up there. Well, I didn’t have great European Junior Championships results. I’ve always had unlucky draws like Max Schoenhaus in the first round or Jan Kumstat in the first round or Linus in the first round… but the other tournaments were good. In general, how has your experience been on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour? I’ve been to a lot of prestigious tournaments like Les Petits As and I played Avvenire this year. I just love the big organization,
the crowd and that there is some hype around the tournament and the matches. I think that these events are very well organized. Is there anything you’re going to miss? I made a lot of friends on the Tour and maybe I’ll meet them later on the ITF Tour as well. I saw that Alexander Zverev said the same, that when we’re younger, we hang out a lot and socialize a lot. Maybe I’ll miss that when we grow up, you know everyone will be more professional and just focusing on themselves. Anything you won’t miss? (laughs) Maybe … (thinking really hard)... I can’t think of anything

OK, that’s good to know! Well, you mentioned your friends and we can see on social media and just from this tournament that you’re good friends with (Portuguese #1) Joao Morgado Yes! TENNIS EUROPE NEWS

In the Spotlight… Kolos Kincses And with your English, did you go to a special English school to learn, or did you just pick it up as you went along? Yeah, this year I spent a lot of time with Joao, but I have a good relationship with all of the guys. You know, the first time you meet them maybe you’re not friends, but seeing each other at all the different tournaments, we end up talking a lot and we ask each other about where we’re playing or if they want to warm up together. And then after that, we get to know each other better. Let’s talk about some of your ambitions for the near future... In the second half of this year, I’ve played a lot of ITFs so my ITF ranking is also pretty good now, it’s almost at #250. So next year, maybe not the Australian Open, but I will try to make it to the junior Grand Slams and also play a lot of ITFs, the higher-level ones let’s say. I just want to be better and the best that I can.. How do you combine schooling and education with tennis, training and traveling and so forth? Thankfully, my school is very cooperative. So, they allow me to go to training in the morning and in the afternoon as well, but I do normal school. In the morning I go to practice and then I go to school and then I go back to practice. So you must make sure you’re at school on time? Yes (laughs) and If I get good grades, then I don’t have to do exams! So, you must study really hard. Are you a good student Yeah, pretty good … I get “A”s.
I don’t know if you emulate him, but you also seem kind of cool, calm and collected on the court like him. That’s nice to see. Yes, that’s impressive to see, especially for how young they are. Do you have any hobbies or anything that you like to do to relax or disconnect from tennis? Well, I love to do other sports. It doesn’t matter what kind of sport it is. I like to play basketball and football. I go swimming sometimes, or even skiing but it doesn’t matter as long as it is sport. And I also really love listening to music or just hanging out with my dog. Before we go, do you have any advice for young kids who maybe want to start playing tournaments? What would you suggest they do? I think it’s totally worth playing Tennis Europe. You won’t lose anything by playing these tournaments. You’ll see and if you like it, you can keep on playing. If you achieve something positive, it just gives you joy. What is harder is getting used to losing, but just go to tournaments to get the experience and enjoy yourself. Maybe sometimes you don’t enjoy it too much when you’re losing, but you do have to go through these things. So, what are your long-term goals or dreams? My dream is to play all the grand slams and be a top 100 player for a long time and just to maximize my potential. Great! Thanks for your time and congratulations again on your Junior Masters win.
TEJT CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Well, that’s good. What kind of subjects do you like or dislike? I am more into history and languages, and I learn Italian. Can you say anything in Italian? Are you fluent? (Laughs) No, no, no … I’ve only been studying for a year and a half. And what I don’t like, well we don’t have chemistry and physics now, but when I had that … well, it’s not for me!. You’re from a tennis family. Your brother was in Milan as your coach/hitting partner, and plays college tennis in the US - is that something you want to do, or would you like to try a different avenue? For now, I want to be a professional. Of course, I will try to achieve that as best I can. Maybe we’ll see and if it doesn’t work then I’ll try the college route. But my main goal is to try and be on the ATP tour.
