Europa Cup, defeating Serbia who, like the Turkish boys, were playing in their maiden Summer Cups final in this age group

14&U Summer Cups glory for France & Romania SUMMER

France had stood on the winners’ podium on twelve previous occasions and proved too strong for the Turks in the end, taking the tie 2-0 Meanwhile Romania, in just their second final since their first in 2003, halted the mighty Serbians, who had earlier taken out favourites Great Britain and hosts Italy . The Romanians outlasted their neighbours, taking the final 2-1

BOYS: COPA DEL SOL

France’s road to the title:

Qualifying:

def. Latvia 3-0, def. Serbia 2-1, lost to Türkiye 1-2

Final Rounds:

def. Poland 3-0, def. Great Britain 3-0, def. Türkiye 2-0

The Turkish team had the best average player ranking (5) of all teams With three top-ten players (Filiz #2, Kosaner #4, Ege Sik #9), they were a force to be reckoned with and this was demonstrated from the event’s outset, beating Switzerland, Montenegro and France in qualifying before seeing off hosts Spain as well as Czech Republic in the final rounds

They had taken it to the French earlier in the event, upstaging the Gallics in the final of their Zone D qualifying group There, Mustafa Ege Sik defeated Jules Nicolas Rimbaud 6-1 6-2, while Kaan Isik Kosaner fell to Daniel Jade 2-6 4-6 with the two Turks combining to defeat the two French boys 6-4 6-0 in the doubles to send Türkiye through as group winners from Denizli on home soil

But in the final in Valencia (ESP), it was the French who exacted revenge and turned the tables on final debutantes Türkiye Rimbaud, ranked number 52, took out the favoured Kosaner 7-5 1-6 6-4, before #12 ranked Jade got the better of Samim Filiz 6-1 6-2

The Turkish team can still be extremely proud of their achievements in this year’s team events Back in February they posted a top-3 finish, coming in third place at the Winter Cups For the French, it was title number thirteen, with their most recent victory having come in 2018 .

GIRLS: EUROPA CUP

Romania’s road to the title:

Qualifying:

def Sweden 3-0, def Greece 3-0, lost to Serbia 1-2

Final Rounds:

def . Germany 2-1, def Slovakia 3-0, def . Serbia 2-1

It was a story of firsts for both nations, with each looking to score their first ever 14&U Summer Cups victory

14&U Summer Cups glory for France & Romania

Romania had previously made the final back in 2003, while the Serbians were playing in their first ever final .

Just like the French boys, the Romanian girls faced their finals opponents for the second time at this year’s event The Serbians got the better of the Romanians on their home turf in qualifying Zone D in Timisoara (ROU), coming out as group winners The seemingly unflappable second-ranked Giulia Popa lost her rubber to #45 Luna Vujovic in a surprisingly one-way contest

Upsets

The ever-dominant Czech Republic girls’ team were upset on home soil in the semis of Zone A qualifying by neighbours Slovakia. Veronika Sekerkova (Race #4) fell to Kali Supova (a 2022 Junior Masters qualifier) while Sara Oliveriusova (Race #1) notched a three-set win over Nikola Farkasova, but the four players returned to court for the doubles which went the way of the Slovaks.

Another upset-of-sorts was the 0-3 capitulation of Great Britain to old foes France in the semifinals of the final rounds. Recent Roehampton Category 1 champ Rhys Lawlor could not keep Jules Nicolas Rimbaud at bay, while Race leader Mark Ceban fell to Lebanese-French player Daniel Jade in three sets.

The third-seeded Romanian boys’ team also fell at the same hurdle to an auspicious Polish team in the qualifying rounds.

SUMMER CUPS

However, playing in a final Popa was always going to be a formidable prospect . Possessing a win-loss record of 25-3 for the year coming into the event, and winner of three 16&U events as well as runner-up at Les Petits As, Popa stepped up when it was most needed

After Vujovic beat Maia Ilinca Burcescu 6-3 7-6(7) to take the Serbs up 1-0 in the final, Popa put the Romanians back in contention with a 6-2 6-3 shut-out of Dusica Popovski When the four players returned to court it was the Romanians who, after a tight first set in the winnertakes-all doubles, ran away with the match, posting a 7-5 6-2 win

FINAL STANDINGS AND ITF FINALS QUALIFICATION

The Summer Cups tournament also serves as European qualifying for the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov (CZE) later in the year . Hosts Czech Republic are joined by the top 5 teams (in bold) in qualifyng for the event

Junior School launches ‘Diversity & Inclusion’ clip, Roadshow continues

Tennis Europe has released the latest in its pioneering series of educational ‘Junior School’ videos The new clip is hosted by wheelchair tennis player Samanta Bullock and explores the topics of equity, diversity and inclusion in the tennis world She explains how tennis players are global citizens and describes the ways in which discrimination and bias can affect a player

The video clip is one of many produced for the Tennis Europe Junior School, and is available for all junior players, coaches, and parents free-of-charge The School is the only player education program to be approved by the International Tennis Federation and the two professional tours, ATP and WTA

Tennis Europe CEO Thomas Hammerl said, “We are pleased to add this important topic to the School’s growing library of videos We fully support the ITF’s ‘Advantage All’ campaign, which aims to ensure that tennis is an equal opportunity sport and a role model for all Olympic and Paralympic sports With this clip we want to ensure that our young players understand the importance of gender balance, diversity and inclusion, and show how by paying close attention to these areas we can make tennis better for everyone ”

The Junior School is devised to assist young players on their journey to becoming professional athletes, and this year it’s set to visit more events than ever before A special invitational event took place in April in Athens, Greece, where many of the world’s best 12 & Under players gathered to compete at the IMG Future Stars Invitational

Aside from the top-class tournament, the players in action at the prestigious Tatoï Club were treated to a full schedule of off-court social and cultural activities and an

exhibition match between Top 20 players Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe

The event also had a strong educational aspect, with workshops for players, parents & coaches held throughout the week Tennis Europe was invited to join the proceedings as an Educational Partner and took the opportunity to provide the young players with a introductory Tennis Europe Junior School class, hosted by CEO Thomas Hammerl . Amongst the subjects covered were ‘The Tennis Family’, ‘Warm-Up and Recovery’, and ‘Nutrition and Hydration’.

Later in June, Tennis Europe staff hosted two on-site sessions of the Junior School at major events Junior Tennis Manager Stephanie Kamberi was joined at the 14&U Lexus Roehampton Junior International in London by representatives of the ITF and the International Tennis Integrity Agency to present the topics of Safeguarding, Integrity, and Nutrition/Hydration to the players

And at the Super Category 16&U Torneo Avvenire in Milan, Bianca Anda Caloian and Yannis Blackburn from the Communications Department debuted the diversity topic alongside a look at the role of the media in tennis The players then took part in an interactive quiz with Dunlop goodies for the winner

The School Roadshow will continue until the end of the year, with confirmed dates in:

• Paris, France – July 9

• Klosters, Switzerland – July 17

• Most, Czech Republic – July 17

• Krems, Austria – July 31

• Larnaca, Cyprus – October 31

THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR IS QUICKLY APPROACHING!

In the Spotlight… Mustafa Ege Sik

Mustafa Ege Sik is one of the players from Türkiye making waves on the Junior Tour’s 14 & Under circuit this year Kick-starting his 2023 with a runner-up berth and a doubles title at the Development Championships on home soil, he has notched up a string of notable results He’s currently ranked in the Race to Monte-Carlo Top Ten, and last week was part of a team that broke new ground for Türkiye, reaching the final of the Summer Cups for the first time

Amongst his other results are a run to the finals at the Soul Cup (Istanbul, Cat 2) and a quarterfinal showing at the Super Category KKDP in Stockholm He was also a doubles champ in Portugal at the Super Category event in Maia We caught up with Ege Sik and got some interesting insights into life on the tour for a junior player from a developing tennis country

TE: When did you first hear about the Tennis Europe Junior Tour?

MES: I don’t remember exactly. I remember I played a national tournament and then when I was there, I saw Tenis Europe written everywhere on posters and banners…and that was my first time seeing anything about the tour.

What is this a 12 & Under tournament? Yes, it was.

Oh great, so two years ago! So tell me, what are your impressions of the Junior Tour?

Well, it’s definitely very different to a national tournament. You meet people from other countries, you play much harder matches and you also get a lot of experience.

Having travelled so much now and played with a lot of people, whether that be in difficult singles matches or in doubles, what have you learnt?

First, I learnt English! (Laughs)

So, English is important?

So much! I have also been to so many countries in Europe. I remember Paris and going to the … tower.

The Eiffel Tower?

Yes (laughs)

So you have had the opportunity to visit so many amazing places? Yes!

And with your English, did you go to a special English school to learn, or did you just pick it up as you went along? I just picked it up. At first maybe I went to a school for a couple of months to learn, but I had no time to go to school.

Speaking of education in that case, just in general, how do you combine learning, going to school, with all your tennis training and tournaments?

I take online lessons, mainly just in English, Maths and Science.

What do you enjoy the most?

Well, Maths is better… I don’t like Science, it’s so hard!

So when you travel to tournaments, is it normally with your coach?

No, my coaches can’t always come to tournaments with me. Other players from Türkiye have a coach, so we can travel together, but sometimes I will go without mine and travel with theirs (as a group).

14 TENNIS EUROPE NEWS
With the Turkish team that finished third in the Winter Cups earlier this year.

to see me! And I also went to Irpin in Ukraine without them.

That all must’ve been difficult. You were 12, right? The first time was difficult, yes.

Do you think it’s good to be able to travel alone sometimes? Maybe sometimes it is, but other times you need your parents or your coach.

Understandable. Have there ever been any moments where you’ve thought “I’m really glad my parents are not here”?

No, not really. I’m (a) good (boy).

Who are your best friends on the tour?

I would say Kaan Isik Kosaner.

What are your favourite tournaments on the #TEJT?

Les Petits As. And hopefully Monte-Carlo if I am able to go there (smiles). I made it to the quarterfinals in Stockholm, and that was so good for me, for Monte-Carlo.

So that’s your objective for now. Looking ahead, even as a professional one day, is there a country that you have never been to that you would like to visit? The United Kingdom. And also, the USA. I hope to go to Indian Wells!

What things do you think could be improved on the #TEJT?

I don’t know. I think everything is good. Nothing comes to mind.

So, you said one of your main goals for this year is to try to qualify for Monte-Carlo. What about beyond that? I want to be in the ITF top 100 until I’m 16 and play some Junior grand slams.

And let’s get to know a bit more about you as a sport sperson. What are some of your strengths?

I think I have a good drop shot and serve.

And is there a particular surface you prefer to play on? Clay!

So apart from basketball and tennis do you play any other sports?

Well actually, after basketball I played football, then I started tennis!

I guess you do your tennis training, but do you do any other sports/activities to complement that?

For three or four months I tried Muay Thai (combat boxing) but I lost interest.

Who are you a tennis idols, men and women?

Now it’s Alcaraz, because he’s playing right now, but I would have to say Federer! I just loved his mentality and his body language on the court.

And what about when it comes to the women?

I think Iga Swiatek.

What is the city where you’ve played that you really loved?

I think Stockholm (KKDP). The atmosphere is so good it’s like you are playing on the ATP! I love the club. The centre court is nice, the other courts are very close.

There have been a lot of players from Türkiye doing well on the Junior Tour. As a developing tennis nation, how do you see the future of tennis in Türkiye?

Yes. Some Turkish players born in 2010 and 2011 have been playing very well. And we had some players do well at the Development Championships.

Yes! You were the runner up!

I lost to my friend, Kaan Isik Kosaner in the week 1 final.

Roehampton event offers Junior Tour stars a chance of Wimbledon glory

Some of the Tour’s best 14 & Under players competed in a high stakes event in London recently, where the winners would seal their places at the Wimbledon 14 & Under Invitational tournament Held in Roehampton at the same venue as the Wimbledon qualifying competition, the 32 boys and 32 girls in action were not short of motivation as they took to the courts, many of them playing their first ever competitive matches on grass courts

This was the second edition of the competition, after a resounding success in 2022 One of last year’s finalists was Andreea Soare (ROU), who also went on to reach the final of 14&U Wimbledon event, where she faced her doubles partner and compatriot Alexia Ioana Tatu . Reflecting on her experience, Soare said “it’s a feeling like no other, playing on those courts…I felt very lucky to be there ”

This year, the girls’ event saw Jana Kovackova score her second Cat 1 tournament win in just over a month, and in commanding style The Czech conceded just 17 games in five matches, with some blistering wins over promising opposition . She ended Hollie Smart’s 12-match Junior Tour win streak in the semi-finals 6-2 6-2 before denying another Brit, Edie Griffiths, a second singles title of the season with a 6-0 6-3 win in the final

Kovackova, the fast-rising sister of current Junior Tour 14/16&U Player of the Year Alena, went on to add the doubles title alongside Sofia Barhacova (SVK)

There was a home winner in the boys’ event as Rhys Lawlor edged past Romania’s Matei Victor Chelemen 7-6(5) 7-6(6) to claim his first ever Tennis Europe Junior Tour singles title Impressively, Lawlor raced to the title without dropping a set, including successive wins over the seventh, first and sixth seeds

Like Kovackova, Lawlor also added the doubles title, teaming up with Maksymilian Kwiatkowski for a second doubles title on home soil so far this season .

Many top players never win an international grass court title, so Kovackova and Lawlor can be proud of their achievements But the dream of a Wimbledon title is still alive for all four finalists: as Lawlor and Griffiths had already qualified at another event, an invitation was also extended to Chelemen Having secured their spots at the Championships, the four will join top 14 & Under players from around the world for the 16-player round robin event from 13-16 July, and will enjoy an authentic Wimbledon experience, sharing the facilities with the brightest stars of the professional game

In the Spotlight… Ksenia Efremova

Ksenia Efremova’s first Tennis Europe experience came on the 12 & Under Tour Last year she exploded onto the 14 & Under circuit and has since evolved into a new tennis phenom Her results, as well as her social media following, have been going from strength to strength Under the guidance of the coaches at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy, Efremova is starting to make waves on the 16 & Under and ITF Junior circuits at just 14 years of age Recently, we took some time to chat to the current #1 on our 14 & Under rankings .

TE: When did you first start playing, or when did you at least think “maybe I’d like to play tennis”?

KE: I don’t remember exactly, but my mother told me that one day I just took a racket and a basket, and just started to feed the balls by myself and started to get them in. So, then she was like, “OK let’s start!”

And when was it that you realized, “you know what: I’m pretty good!”?

I don’t really know, it’s difficult to say because maybe the time hasn’t come yet. I really want to win Grand Slams. So maybe at that point, I’ll say that I’m really good!

At what age did you start playing small tournaments and was this in Russia?

Yes, it was. I started to play, I would say, at eight years old. I had a great streak at the tournaments in Russia. So, from the first one, I didn’t lose in 15 tournaments in a row! I know at that point my parents said, “OK we have to make her lose, at least”, so they brought me to play in a Tennis Europe tournament. I think it was at a 12 and Under event in Belarus. The girls were three years older than me so my parents thought “OK she will lose for the first time.” But I made it to the final … and I was still a little bit upset!

Meaning they thought that for your development it would be good for you to perhaps lose some matches and learn how to deal with that?

Of course, they believed that I could achieve something, but because the girls were three years older, they said to me it’s OK if you lose.

A lot of players participate in other sports, maybe for fun or to develop other skills. Do you?

Yes, yes. My mother signed me up for a lot of sports. First of all, I did artistic gymnastics, and I took it seriously but for her it was mainly for stretching, which is good for tennis players. So, I did that from the age of five till about 11 or 12, really seriously.

And now do you have any other hobbies or sports that you participate in?

Yeah, of course I love to try all sports. I really like ice skating… do you know it?

Yes, I tried it for the first time last winter. It’s really difficult, and I kept falling down!

(Laughs) Yeah, it’s hard and quite scary. Of course, I’ve also done swimming, which is very important for tennis, maybe twice a week. After I did dance, especially hip-hop. After I did football.

So just tennis and swimming right now, right! Looking at the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, what are your impressions? What do you like? What could be improved?

(Laughs) I don’t know what could be improved because everything is amazing! All the tournaments are really, really amazing. The tournaments, the organization, everything is super, super great.

Don’t worry, you can be critical if you need to!

(Laughs) not really, I don’t have anything bad to say!

Tell us what you think about the Tennis Europe Junior School. I think it’s very nice. I don’t know why, but I’ve only had the chance to go to one of the classes, because sometimes I’ll turn up and the session has finished or something like that. Anyway, I think it’s very nice and teaches the kids a lot.

What are some of the difficult things for you personally coming into, especially, a big tournament? You have a prominent profile on social media. Everybody knows who you are. How do you deal with being well-known? Well, these things are taken care of by my mother and my agent, not me. I don’t care how many followers I have. I didn’t look at this, I don’t care. But yes, I really like it - I mean having fans is very nice, you know.

Have you met any top players or coaches or had the opportunity to practice with any of them there at the academy?

Yes, the top players for sure. Daniil Medvedev, I saw him. For two or three days Djokovic came … and, well, a lot of players actually!

Keeping in mind some of the top players, do you have any tennis idols?

Yes, I do. Mine is Novak Djokovic but there have always been the big three Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. The three greatest.

Do you like all of them?

Yes.

And among the women?

I can’t say anybody, because I want to be there so, you know…

So, it’s nice being recognized. Do people ask you for autographs and things?

Yeah, so many. So, of course it’s very nice and all that stuff but as far as social media, my mum takes care of that.

Please tell us more about your collaboration with the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy. How long you’ve been there and how it’s all going.

Yeah, I’ve been there for four years, and I really like the Academy. It’s in the south of France and it really is one of the best academies.

How did it all come about?

I was playing a tournament in Croatia and the winner was given one week training for free at the MTA as a prize. I won this tournament, and I went for one week to the Mouratoglou Academy. After, Patrick saw me and he made me ‘Champ Seed’, which comes from the Champ Seed Foundation he started, I think in 2014, to help the players.

Then you met Patrick and he liked the way you were as a player?

He asked me if I wanted to be a Champ Seed and of course I said yes and that’s how it all started.

OK, no problem. Moving on, let’s talk about some of your goals for 2023.

For this year, to continue playing 14 & Under, to win tournaments, of course, to stay number one and to play some ITFs to improve my ranking for next year. Hopefully I can play maybe some big tournaments next year - my ranking now is around 300 but next week I’m going to Morocco, and we’ll see how it goes, hopefully it’s going to be good.

Note: this interview was conducted just before Efremova’s trip to 2 events in Morocco after having won the Super Category event in Maia. She made the quarterfinal of the J100 in Mohammedia, losing to Iva Lakic (MNE) who in turn lost the final to the then Race to Monte Carlo leader Anna Pushkareva. Ksenia then made it to the semifinal in singles of the J100 in Rabat and won the doubles there with Pushkareva. Below pic; winning the 2022 14&U Junior Masters in Monte-Carlo).

Looking back at the #TEJT, you won the Junior Masters last year, which was obviously a fantastic achievement. Now you’ve just won Maia after a lot of good results for your first ever victory at a Super Category event. How does that make you feel?

Yeah, super happy. I was twice in the super category finals, but I didn’t quite make it. And now it feels great to win. It gives me a lot of confidence, of course.

When you play, sometimes maybe the ball’s not going in or your level has dropped a little bit, but you seem to stay calm you never get angry or throw your racquet... Yeah, because I like to follow the example of some of the best players like Alcaraz or Federer. When you see them on TV, it seems like they never panic. But for the moment I am panicking! (laughs) I never throw the racquet. I think it’s useless and it’s not really good. You make the mistake, not your racquet so you need to control your emotions. So, my goal is to be like Federer. Calm like that. I’m not perfect yet, but I can control my emotions and not get angry… so that I can control.

Even when you’re winning, you don’t seem to get too excited. Or some people when they’re ahead they relax, but you have this intensity and when you’re winning you seem to maintain that focus.

Yeah, I try to think of the mental side. Because, like, in the Maia

final I was 4-1 up, and I don’t know, I had a loose game or made some mistakes, I started to think negatively. And once I think negatively, the girl can take the set from me 6-1. But I’ve been working on that since last year.

So, to finish on a high note: How would you describe yourself using just three words?

Fighter, friendly and hard-working.
