Our growing global presence

Terberg Environmental were previously primarily focused on the European market. However, since 2016, we have broadened our focus, developing a strategy to establish a global presence. As part of this strategy, Terberg Environmental has established subsidiaries in new markets, which will enable us to be in closer proximity to our customers. For 2024 and beyond we have successfully established hubs in Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, and South-East Asia, allowing us to provide our services to a more diverse customer base. Our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction remains, and this expansion serves to continue that commitment.

These hubs go beyond existence as mere sales offices, underlining our dedication to both our strategy and our customers. Our subsidiary in Dubai, UAE, for instance, boasts a substantial site dedicated to the assembly of Olympus bodies, vehicle integration, and servicing. Similarly, Dennis Eagle Inc. in Summerville, South Carolina, USA, was established in 2020 and has already expanded its premises to accommodate the growing demand for the ProView chassis customized for the American market.

In our continued expansion efforts, we established Terberg Matec Latam in Bogotá to cater to the South American market. Although currently operations are modest, they will grow into a manufacturing facility within the year. Additionally, in December 2023 we have strengthened our presence in the Southeast Asian region by acquiring our distributor Zenith, which has operations in both Singapore and Malaysia. Terberg Zenith extends its services to customers across Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. Notably, our operations in Singapore have recently relocated to a new site equipped for assembly, body mounting, and servicing, while our counterparts in Malaysia operate from a spacious facility in Kuala Lumpur.

Digitalisation

Digitalisation continues to be a key component of our overarching strategy. This encompasses various initiatives, notably Terberg Connect, our telematics systems designed to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of refuse vehicle operations and servicing. Beyond the evident benefits of Terberg Connect, our digitalisation efforts extend to the adoption of a unified IT platform across all our subsidiaries. This unified platform will standardise our manufacturing and servicing operations, fostering greater uniformity and efficiency. Ultimately, this streamlined approach will empower us to deliver even better products and services to our customers, further solidifying our position as a leader in the industry.

Sustainability

Sustainability has long been a core value and a leading light in our strategy, evident in the longevity of our products, their ease of repair, and their fuel efficiency, all of which contribute significantly to sustainability efforts. Furthermore, the Royal Terberg Group is currently in the process of developing its inaugural sustainability report, aligning with the new European Sustainability Reporting Standards. This represents a significant undertaking that will furnish valuable insights into our sustainability performance. Moreover, it will enable us to elevate our standards further, fostering collaboration with both suppliers and customers to advance sustainability practices across the business.

Thank you

Many of the articles in this magazine highlight the substantial growth experienced by Terberg Environmental subsidiaries. This growth is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of our team members, as well as the trust our customers place in us and our products. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved for their contributions.

Reinforcing Terberg’s presence in South East Asia

In our previous issue, we published an interview with Jeremy Boanson-James introducing our new subsidiary in Dubai. However, Jeremy has since moved to Singapore and has more great news to share, “At the end of 2023, Terberg acquired Zenith Engineering, our reliable distributor in the region for close to 20 years, to strengthen our presence here.

Zenith not only supplies RCVs but also builds trailers, tankers and static compactors, all designed by our Engineering department. We plan to continue these product lines and we have invested in a new factory space of 11,000 m² and have already moved the operations there. The relocation took only three weeks thanks to the superb team in Singapore. Production and service are all under one roof, quite literally, we have no yard here, but this promotes cleanliness and production efficiency.

Selangor plant

Zenith has a manufacturing facility located in Selangor, Malaysia, which is currently undergoing modernization. We have a complete set of OEM jigs to assemble Olympus bodies for our customers in this region. We are currently

occupied with assembling Olympus bodies and bin lift kits there. These are required for a large order placed by a waste management company, Alam Flora. Terberg Tractors Malaysia facilitated the bid during the ongoing acquisition, a great example of synergy within the Royal Terberg Group.

Olympus for the world

Since working in Export for Terberg Environmental my narrative and endeavour have been that wherever in the world you buy an Olympus, it should have the same quality and support. Although the proven core superstructure remains, we customize control and mechanical systems to adhere to local legislation and regulations. Our global manufacturing and service subsidiaries, bolstered by the addition of Terberg Zenith and its team, are steadfast in ensuring consistent Olympus supply worldwide.

Health and Safety

We’re committed to improving health and safety in both locations to match our other subsidiaries’ standards. In the first week, we

6 AUTOMATION Development TERBERG ENVIRONMENTAL MAGAZINE 2024 Acquisitions ZENITH

provided all factory personnel with relevant PPE, including safety boots, a significant improvement from previously. We’ve also upgraded lighting, and fall protection systems, and are procuring modern welding equipment. Additionally, diesel forklifts have been replaced with electric units supporting our sustainability goals.

Service operations

We currently have 12 service vehicles for

RCVs and other equipment in Singapore. I aim to replace all of them with electric vehicles, we currently have four. We use a new digital dispatch system that helps to improve customer service and efficiency. In addition to servicing RCVs and tankers at the factory, we are on a campaign to encourage more proactive maintenance.

Finding the right people

When demand calls it’s challenging to

find skilled production and service staff. Therefore in Singapore, we are engaging with the ITE training institute that supports younger Singaporeans in finding vocational placements. We are also collaborating with TWI (The Welding Institute) in Malaysia to recruit newly graduated coded welders to support the manufacture of our pressure vessel tanks. The training they receive will ensure that we maintain high-quality welding standards when assembling Olympus bodies.

Terberg Zenith as a hub

Our organisation here will become a hub for the ASEAN region. That brings us closer to our distributors - it helps to be in the same time zone. Again, it’s about Terberg building closer relationships. We plan to expand our already strong presence in the RCV market as the demand for bin lifts and recycling bodies is expected to increase due to changing health and safety legislation – luckily both products are available within Terberg Environmental.

Dust screws

Zenith’s static compactor range, ‘dust screws’ as they are known in the region, are the leading brand in the market and are typically installed at the bottom of waste chutes in highrise buildings.

Electrification

With its tightly packed urban landscape and bustling streets, Singapore offers a prime opportunity for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. From service vans and refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) to electric sweepers, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly transportation options in the city-state. By embracing sustainable technology, Singapore is a leader in creating a cleaner, greener future for all.

Product range

Most of the RCVs in this region are rear loaders. However, we see an opportunity for Terberg Environmental Speedline SLM side loaders. As a result, we have recently brought one to this region to demonstrate its impressive single-man operation. Additionally, Terberg Zenith supplies and services Bucher sweepers. I am looking forward to growing Terberg’s presence in this region and building upon Zenith’s outstanding reputation and the great team of people.”

The company specializes in designing and manufacturing electronic control and telematics systems that are used in various Terberg Environmental products. As digitalization continues to gain popularity and is increasingly utilized in our product lines, the RTG Board made a strategic decision to acquire TA in June 2022, acknowledging that TA would be a valuable addition to the group.

The history of TA and Terberg Connect

Directors Sandra Bek and Marco Overbeek “We had many years’ experience in industrial control and generator systems with remote access. The remote access hardware seemed like a natural fit and a useful companion to the control systems we were already supplying to Terberg for

their bin lifts. Terberg Connect was launched in 2020 and its timely introduction certainly proved invaluable during the pandemic, the technology is now a standard feature on all bin lifts. It can also be connected to refuse bodies and vehicle chassis.

Terberg Connect provides real-time access to all relevant parameters. This allows our support team to identify and troubleshoot vehicle problems remotely. In some cases, issues like operator errors can be resolved remotely, but if a service van must be dispatched, we ensure that it carries the appropriate parts for a fix-first-time solution. Additionally, Connect features a secure function for remotely updating software. Vehicle owners can

use Connect standalone or integrate it with their fleet management system to optimize their operations and save time and fuel.

Worldwide application

Terberg Connect utilizes 3G, 4G, and 5G networks, depending on the region and we now have FCC approval along with the first units installed on the Dennis Eagle ProView chassis for the American market.

Our system is highly adaptable and can connect to a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus, making it compatible with other RTG company products. This highlights the strategic importance of Terberg Connect to the Royal Terberg Group. Terberg Techniek is already installing the system on their state-of-the-art electric Power Take-Offs (PTOs) and portable hydrogen (H2) power units.

Delivering advanced digitalisation

Terberg Connect is our telematics system which seamlessly communicates a wealth of data to and from the refuse body, bin lift, weighing and identification systems and vehicle chassis. It is at the heart of our digitalisation strategy to maximise vehicle uptime and sustainability.

Terberg Automotive is responsible for the hardware, and custom develops the software according to the product requirements of our manufacturing centres. Having the development fully in-house ensures that the system better meets the needs of both our customers and after-sales support.

Using data to reduce downtime, increase efficiency and cut emissions

Terberg Connect was initially developed for remote troubleshooting and support. It has evolved greatly since then, and now also provides our customers with detailed vehicle information such as position, speed, operational status, number of emptied bins, etc. This enables route optimisation, increased fleet utilisation, and minimises their environmental impact.

NRG Riverside - UK

NRG Riverside is the largest municipal and specialist fleet hire and management company in the UK with more than 2000 vehicles.

Chris Snelson, Fleet and Asset Director for NRG says “Our hire fleet currently includes 182 vehicles that are Terberg Connect enabled. In 2023 this connected service helped us reduce the number of service visits by 26% compared to 2022, with a corresponding decrease in service van mileage and CO2 emissions.

Additionally, the real-time vehicle warning information enables us to proactively address issues before they lead to faults. By minimising vehicle downtime, reducing service calls and cutting carbon emissions, we can deliver cost-effective and sustainable waste management services to our customers. Terberg Connect is a great tool to have at our disposal and we look forward to having more of our fleet connected in the future.”

We can remotely assist a customer’s fitter, reducing customer downtime and the environmental impact of our service van fleet.

Our after-sales team is now able to remotely assist with problem-solving, particularly with operator errors, thanks to Terberg Connect. Now when a service engineer travels to an RCV, in most cases, we already know the cause of the problem meaning that the engineer arrives equipped with the necessary parts to fix the fault on the first visit. Alternatively, we can remotely assist a customer’s fitter, reducing customer downtime and the environmental impact of our service van fleet.

Unlike most telematics systems, Terberg Connect is bidirectional and enables secure modifications to vehicle settings and software updates.

As we mentioned previously, Terberg Connect has undergone significant development since our last magazine. Product manager Robbert Verschuur, based in the Netherlands gave us an update. “We now have 13 in-house developers working on the software, and over 6000 Terberg Connect units have already been installed in vehicles worldwide.

We offer an API for integration with fleet management systems, toolbox pop-ups offering detailed information, and upgraded security features. With Terberg Connect’s user interface, you can keep track of important events such as low oil pressure, overweight bins, low

tyre pressure, and excess vehicle weight. The system also triggers emails and SMS text messages to keep you updated and optimize your fleet’s operations, saving fuel. The Daily Drop report shows how many bins were emptied, when and where - that is particularly useful for operators without a fleet management system. Data communicated from the chassis, for example, the axle weights, allows you to see how much more refuse you can collect before the end of a round.

API

Our Application Program Interface (API) enables customers to link Terberg Connect to their fleet management system and import any of the 3000 signals. Customers with larger fleets tend to use the API with Business Intelligence tools for data visualisation and dashboards whilst smaller operators use the standard Terberg Connect online interface.

High refresh frequency

Terberg Connect updates signals every second – this sounds excessive but is essential for remote diagnosis - if you ask an operator to do something on the vehicle you need to see the effect instantly. Fine-grained data for throttle and brake actuation is valuable for driver

behaviour analysis - some customers have achieved fuel savings of up to 20% as a result of that.

Security

Connectivity carries risks – such as a hacker setting a vehicle to low-speed mode on the motorway causing an accident. The UN regulations R155 & R156 address cybersecurity and software updates – to comply with these we perform a Threat Assessment Risk Analysis (TARA) and log our software development, testing and issues. The effort has been substantial, but we are now fully compliant, putting us ahead of other systems. We also meet GDPR requirements.

Testing

With Terberg Connect being rolled out worldwide, we need to ensure that the 3/4/5G communications system works everywhere, so we invested in special test equipment. We have also received FCC approval for the USA. Lastly, the Terberg Connect module has ingress protection to IP69K so it withstands pressure washing.

All in all, Terberg Connect fits in perfectly with our customer-support and sustainability strategies.”

Terberg Connect helps Munster Vehicle Sales provide efficient support - Ireland

MVS Cork is the agent for the Terberg/ Dennis Eagle products throughout Ireland.

Product manager Mark Cullen explained how Connect helps MVS and their customers “Terberg Connect makes troubleshooting much easier: remote diagnostics becomes easy, making firsttime fixes the norm. I can see what is happening in real-time, decide what parts are required and direct the engineer to the vehicle location, all from our main service centre in Cork. For us, Connect is a perfect fit, particularly in rural areas with long travel distances. I have used the system to fix a product on a collection round in Dublin whilst I was away visiting Dennis Eagle in the UK.

We recently arranged a presentation for our customers, together with the team from Terberg Machines. They were super positive about Connect, with several keen to have it on new orders. And personally, I think it’s simply brilliant.”

Terberg’s gateway to Latin America

In line with our international growth strategy, Terberg Environmental established Terberg Matec Latam (TML) in 2023 to better serve customers in Latin America and the Caribbean. TML aims to address the region’s increasing demand for more efficient and safer waste management solutions. Similar to our subsidiaries in Dubai and Southeast Asia, TML plans to establish local manufacturing operations to enhance service delivery and support economic development.

Managing Director Ana Alcerro shared insights into our latest venture “I joined Ros Roca in 2009 as a business development manager and have since led projects across Malaysia, Russia, South America, and beyond. Last year, I relocated to Bogotá, Colombia, to establish the TML office. Our workshop, scheduled to open around June, will feature a parts warehouse, maintenance and repair area, and a body mounting station. Looking ahead, we plan to introduce a body assembly area next year.

Rear loaders

Most Latam operators use rear loaders, therefore our factory will specialize in

assembling refuse bodies and mounting them onto chassis, with a particular focus on our renowned Olympus ART bodies. These bodies maintain identical dimensions, materials, steel thickness, and other key features as the standard Olympus body. However, they are configured with electronics and sensors to meet the specific requirements of our customers in the region, catering to their unique operational needs.

Additionally, we can offer push-button operated bin lift systems to the Latam market, revolutionizing bin collections. This ensures quicker and more efficient operations compared to other lifts available in the Latam

market, highlighting our commitment to advanced, more efficient, technology tailored to our customers’ needs.

Side loaders

In 2019, we supplied five Speedline SCOPE CWS side loaders to Bogotá for refuse collection on streets with unusually high curbs.

16 TERBERG ENVIRONMENTAL MAGAZINE 2024 TERBERG MATEC LATAM Growth markets

These CWS units continue to excel in daily service, and feature swappable refuse bodies that are transferred to standard trucks once full for onward disposal leaving the core Speedline SCOPE equipment to pick up an empty container and continue. This solution applies to other cities in the region, showcasing its versatility and effectiveness.

Marc Hauwert, Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands in Colombia

“We are excited about Terberg Environmental and their assembly operations in Colombia! The Netherlands and Colombia share a robust economic relationship: the Netherlands stands as the third-largest investor in Colombia, Holland House Colombia is the second-largest bilateral Chamber of Commerce and the Netherlands serves as the largest destination for Colombian products in Europe and the fifth-largest globally. This strong economic foundation bodes well for the success of Terberg Environmental’s endeavours in this market.”

We also introduced high-capacity bins, measuring 2.2 cubic meters in this project. This innovation encourages residents to dispose of their waste inside containers rather than leaving it in bags on the streets, promoting cleaner and more organized waste management practices.

After-sales

While our customers frequently handle maintenance in-house, their teams may lack familiarity with the electrical systems on compactors. Therefore, we provide this service for them. Additionally, we are securing more maintenance contracts, guaranteeing timely preventive maintenance and minimizing downtime for our customers.

“We are delighted to see that Terberg Environmental joins the group of Dutch companies choosing Colombia as the Hub for the Latin American region. We also think it is the right decision. Colombia is at the forefront of prioritizing the energy transition and environmental technology innovation in Latin America, which makes it a very attractive market for Terberg. Moreover, Colombia is strategically located, with access to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and being part of the Andean as well as the Caribbean cultural realm. It also has a young, educated workforce and of course a strong existing relationship with the Netherlands. This combination of factors means that there is no doubt in our minds that Terberg´s operations in Colombia will be a great success.”

Markets

We aim to expand our product distribution beyond Colombia to include Chile, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and other Latin American countries. Our diverse product portfolio includes Olympus rear loaders, Speedline SLM and HS side loaders, bin washers, and bins, catering to all our customers’ refuse collection needs. Our clientele includes municipalities, local operators, and large international operators, many of whom use Terberg Environmental equipment across various countries.

We collaborate with Scania Colombia to mount Olympus bodies on their chassis, serving their market needs. These units are available at short notice, catering to some specific customers. However, we also offer body mounting services on other chassis as needed.

Health and safety

Refuse collection equipment in this region often lacks essential safety features. Manual lifting of bins onto RCVs is common practice, which can be physically taxing, particularly due to the weight of organic material. Thankfully, there’s a shift in attitudes, and we’re prepared to provide our innovative bin lifts to enhance safety and efficiency for RCV loaders. Moreover, Colombia is implementing new safety regulations, mirroring European standards, to further improve workplace safety in the sector.

In cities such as Bogotá, where cycling to work is common, there’s a growing demand for detection systems that alert drivers to cyclists in their blind spots. Leveraging Terberg’s extensive international expertise, we’re wellequipped to fulfill these requirements and ensure road safety for all commuters.

Conclusion

I believe Terberg Environmental’s decision to expand into Latin America and the Caribbean is a superb strategic move. With our local presence, we can provide highquality products and the necessary after-sales support to meet the needs of our customers effectively.”

provided us with an update on the latest developments in Belgium and Luxembourg with Terberg Matec Belgium (TMBE) now in its third decade of trading.

“In both Belgium and Luxembourg, most major cities manage their refuse collection operations, while smaller municipalities typically enlist private contractors for waste collection services. TMBE caters to this growing demand by supplying a variety of RCVs to these contractors for household and commercial waste collection. Moreover, both public and private waste collection operations are increasingly turning to TMBE to outsource their servicing needs.

We see further opportunities for growth in supplying private companies and customers in the southern, French-speaking, regions of Belgium. There is also a strong market for RFID and weighing systems. Additionally, we supply and service a diverse range of Bucher Municipal compact diesel and electric road sweepers.

We support our customers with a fleet of service vans, our dedicated workshop, the Terberg Tractors Belgium workshop in Gent, and service partners. We’re continuously expanding our network, strategically positioning ourselves near our customers to assist them in running their operations efficiently.

Customers chose Terberg for the lower total cost of ownership, a result of efficient technology and design, leading to easier servicing and cleaning and better ergonomics for the loaders. Terberg Connect offers a significant advantage by streamlining support and providing fleet managers with clear, real-time information about their vehicles, ultimately leading to increased uptime.”

New facility construction, delivering enhanced offering

“In Genk, a new building is currently under construction to accommodate our expansion. Upon completion, it will be quite impressive, spanning 35 meters in width and 100 meters in

length. The building will incorporate numerous environmentally conscious features, including solar panels and heat pumps.

Currently, bodies and bin lifts for customers in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands are fitted to the chassis at the Terberg Environmental plants in Spain and the UK, where the bodies are built. However, starting early next year, this process will transition to our new facility. This change will help reduce our environmental impact as trucks will transport two or more RCV bodies from the manufacturing plants, rather than just one. Additionally, bin lifts only have to come from the Netherlands. Moreover, this shift will make it easier for our customers to travel for vehicle handovers. The assembly operations will be carried out by a specialized team in a dedicated part of the building, which we anticipate will significantly expand the TMBE workforce from the 25 people we have today.

The new building has safety features for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, and chargers for EV cars and RCVs. In short, a real improvement - a great place to receive our customers and a great working environment for our fantastic team.”

Celebrating 25 Years of Speedline Side Loaders

Developed 25 years ago by our German subsidiary, Terberg HS (THS), the Speedline was, and is, a solution to changing operational practices and increasing recycling demands. These units require only a single operator, the RCV driver, making them ideal for areas with low population density and longer distances between loading points.

The Speedline range includes a Twin variant, capable of loading two waste fractions without cross-contamination in one cycle. Its drivercentric design ensures operators remain in the cab, enhancing safety and reducing weather exposure. This also saves the time and physical effort associated with getting in and out of the cab.

Urban areas

Speedline is versatile, making it suitable for urban areas with bins close to the curb. The SCOPE model accommodates containers up to 3.2 m³, allowing householders to place their refuse bags in the spacious roadside container.

CWS efficiency

Waste management companies and municipalities often face long driving distances between refuse collection routes and disposal sites. To streamline logistics and reduce costs, the CWS Speedline features a swappable body system. Once full with materials the CWS body is transferred from the Speedline to a ‘standard’ truck with a hook lift for transport to the disposal site. Meanwhile, the specialized Speedline vehicle picks up an empty body to continue refuse collection operations seamlessly.

The Terberg HS team is excited to continue developing the system and expanding its presence into new markets.

Personal perspectives on the Speedline

We spoke with Ralf Woyczechowski, Head of Product Development, about the advantages of the Speedline.

“The driver enjoys an ergonomic workstation in the RCV cab, with controls and monitors easily within reach. They operate the side loader with a joystick, engage the lifter with the bin, and the emptying process is performed automatically from a preset pickup height. Safety systems protect the working area of the bin lift, ensuring bystander safety. We also offer independent electrohydraulic systems suitable for installation on electric vehicles. Additionally, digitalization plays a crucial role by recording system data and ensuring sustainable operation. I see side loading as a forward-thinking method for

recyclables collection, prioritizing employee health and safety over traditional rear loader systems.”

Product Manager Carsten Viermann offered us his perspective on the Speedline “Before joining THS, I worked at a refuse collection company, where I spearheaded the introduction of single-operator technology. Joining THS in 2015, I transitioned into product management and the development of side and front loaders.

We employ a modular system, allowing for customization by size and shape, offering options for low headroom or high volume –we tailor the bodies to our customer’s specific applications. The Speedline is compatible with diesel, electric, and CNG/LNG chassis, providing versatility in vehicle selection. While our earlier models focused on handling smaller, two-wheeled bins, our range has evolved to include the capability to lift fourwheel and static large volume containers. Lifts adaptations are available for a wide range of bin types and engagement designs to meet diverse customer needs.

Throughout the years, we’ve continuously optimized energy consumption and refined the compaction system to enhance efficiency and performance.

Drivers appreciate the autonomy of controlling their work from the cab. With a significant share of the side loader market in Germany and operations in various countries like France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Czechia, and Colombia, our Speedline range is capturing a strong presence globally. Looking ahead, I anticipate advancements like AI cameras for automated protection of the working area around the bin lift.”

24 TERBERG ENVIRONMENTAL MAGAZINE 2024 Development 25 YEARS SIDELOADER Product focus

Setting an ambitious strategy for Terberg HS

Ulrich Zschenderlein joined Terberg HS GmbH in July 2023 as Managing Director. Before that he worked for a crane manufacturer.

He has a clear vision for the direction of the company “I think that in my relatively short time with the company I have developed a good understanding of the company and its people, our products and the market, our customers. We are the market and technology leader in the field of single-man-operated systems, we want to maintain and strengthen that position. Our front and side loaders have a strong market position but there is always room for innovation. We recently delivered the 2000th side loader, a real milestone. Electrification is increasingly important to our customers and we want to support their efforts, weight reduction engineering of the body will help offset some of the unladen weight increase due to EV batteries.

Entering the rear loader market

Most of the refuse collection vehicles sold in Germany are rear loaders, our share of that segment is limited and we want to change that. Olympus bodies fitted with Terberg bin lifts are exceptional products and should appeal to customers looking for a quality alternative to the current leading suppliers in the market. Some operators may prefer our ROTOlympus, featuring a rotating body,

a widely used option for organic fractions. Finally, we now offer the ORUS, a super compact vehicle that can reach places inaccessible to larger vehicles.

We plan to fit Olympus bodies and bin lifts onto chassis in Germany starting 2025/2026 in a purpose-built assembly facility, mirroring our colleagues at Terberg Matec Polska, and the facility being built by Terberg Matec Belgium. We hope to inspire greater confidence in the market, demonstrating that we have full control of the product. We are eager to discuss our customers requirements with them, tailoring RCVs to their operations. After all, building strong, long-lasting relationships with customers is what makes Terberg who we are.

International ambitions

At the moment we mostly supply our front and side loaders to the German market. We are confident that these products offer a viable solution for customers in different countries as well. They are solely operated by the driver, making them highly efficient. Additionally, the driver remains in the cab while emptying a bin, eliminating exposure to adverse weather or traffic hazards. Moreover, they are located

Ulrich Zschenderlein

Our front and side loaders have a strong market position but there is always room for innovation.

away from any potential risk of entering the working area of the loading. Our Millennium XXL and Megaline front loaders are efficient solutions for handling larger bins. The popular Speedline side loaders handle a range of bin sizes and are used both in rural areas and city centres.

Some of our Speedline units have been operational in Bogotá, Colombia for a few years now, a major component of winning that contract was that the Speedline provided the perfect solution for the customer’s specific application. Those vehicles have removable CWS bodies which are transported when full to the disposal site by conventional trucks - that’s more efficient when driving a long distance and allows the Speedline to continue working with a new empty body. We also supplied the customer with over a thousand 2.2 cubic metre bins, manufactured by our colleagues in Spain. We are currently working on a tender for vehicles for a similar project in Brazil.

These plans align nicely with the international growth of Terberg Environmental and new market development. We have already welcomed a delegation from the Netherlands at our plant here in Emstek to discuss the circular economy. We have always focussed on the quality of our products and serving our customers in this region, now it’s time to be more ambitious and promote our products further afield.

Sustainable Synergy: Driving Forward with the Royal Terberg Group Roadmap

At the Royal Terberg Group, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword – it’s in our DNA. We’re dedicated to upholding our family business legacy while taking responsibility for both our people and the planet. Our bold sustainability ambitions and strategic roadmap outlined in the RTG Mission and Strategy 2023 - 2027 document reflect our unwavering commitment to making a positive impact for generations to come.

Terberg’s commitment to sustainability is evident across all 38 operating companies, ingrained in everything we do. From pioneering advancements in our e-drive product portfolio to embracing renewable energy through solar initiatives, and even revolutionizing waste reduction with innovative stillages, our commitment to sustainability knows no bounds.

But we’re not stopping there. As the world’s sustainability landscape evolves, driven by the demands of society, our valued customers, suppliers and stringent governmental regulations, Terberg is stepping up to the plate like never before. In the spring of 2023, we embarked on an ambitious journey to intensify collaboration across all our companies, rallying behind a shared vision for sustainability.

Led by the unwavering dedication of our senior management teams, we’re prioritizing sustainability across three critical domains: Environment, Social Aspects, and Governance. Because we understand that real change starts from within, and by uniting our efforts, we can create a lasting impact that extends far beyond our company walls.

Our sustainability commitments encapsulate our focus to driving positive change across every facet of our business:

Sustainability

• Enable our customers to transport goods safely and sustainably: We aim to ensure user health & safety through our vehicle design and construction and transform transportation solutions to zero-emission and a circular economy.

• People centered and sustainable operations: Our focus extends beyond profit margins to prioritize the development of our people, ensure their health & safety and ensure equal treatment and opportunity for all. We will reduce energy use, GHG emissions and reduce (natural) resource use and waste. We will ensure a clean environment, without pollution.

• Responsible Business Conduct: We will apply our Code of Conduct in our value chain and apply Sustainability Due Diligence in our supply chain to ensure responsible sourcing.

• Contribution to local communities: We will contribute to the communities and regions we operate in through dedicated social impact initiatives and partnerships.

Each commitment is backed by concrete targets, strategic choices, key performance indicators (KPIs), and actionable plans to ensure we stay true to our sustainability journey.

Our dedicated project team assesses our Greenhouse Gas footprint group-wide, covering scope 1 (our direct emissions), scope 2 (emissions from purchased energy), and scope 3 (other, indirect emissions). Comprised of members from all Terberg companies, our ‘Carbon Team’ underwent specialized training via webinars tailored specifically for Terberg. Our internal Sustainability SharePoint site serves as a valuable resource hub, offering insights into sustainability legislation and more. Furthermore, we started a Life Cycle Assessment project involving collaboration

with heads of engineering across our organization.

Terberg companies are continuously dedicated to local enhancements, including process optimization to boost energy efficiency, comprehensive training programs to foster the development of our workforce, robust implementation of the Terberg Code of Conduct, impactful community initiatives, attainment of ISO certifications such as ISO 45001 and 14001, and the pursuit of sustainability or ESG ratings.

A comprehensive summary of these endeavours will be unveiled in the inaugural group-wide sustainability report of the Royal Terberg Group, due for release in the Summer of 2024.

Terberg Matec Poland from 0 to 30% market share in 10 years

Back in 2013, Piotr Pawlowski established Terberg Matec Polska (TMPL) with only four other team members which consisted of a sales manager, a service manager, an admin staff, and a technician. He told us more about the development and growth of the company, “Since 2013, our company has experienced tremendous growth and now boasts nearly 40 staff members. Situated on an industrial estate in the northern part of Warsaw, our fully equipped workshop and offices serve as the hub for assembling vehicles and conducting servicing operations. Additionally, we maintain a fleet of mobile service technicians who operate across Poland.

TERBERG ENVIRONMENTAL MAGAZINE 2024 29 Subsidiary focus TMPL

We serve three primary customer categories: municipal authorities, local private sector refuse collection contractors, and subsidiaries of internationally active contractors. As customers increasingly prioritize the total cost of ownership over the initial cost of a Refuse Collection Vehicle (RCV), they have shown greater interest in our products. This shift has fueled our growth and development over the past decade, propelling us to become the second-largest RCV supplier in Poland with a market share of approximately 30%. Undoubtedly, the strength of our organization has played a pivotal role in our success.

While rear loaders dominate the Polish waste management market, constituting about 95% of usage, we’ve begun offering front loaders and side loaders for industrial bins.

Some customers have discovered front loaders to be an efficient and cost-effective solution for emptying large bins servicing residential buildings. This is particularly evident in scenarios where ample space allows for maneuvering these sizable vehicles.

Inspiring confidence

Our customers trust us because we manufacture the bodies and bin lifts of our vehicles in Warsaw. This shows that we are committed to providing quality products for the long haul. Once our customers begin working with us, our after-sales support ensures their satisfaction and encourages repeat business. While the demand for our products fluctuates annually, we typically sell around 140 new RCVs each year.

While rear loaders dominate the Polish waste management market, we’ve begun offering front loaders and side loaders for industrial bins.

Given Poland’s vast size, it often takes a significant amount of time for a service van to reach a customer. Consequently, many customers opt to handle servicing or repairs in-house. To support them, we provide guidance and ensure prompt delivery of spare parts. Terberg Connect proves invaluable for remote troubleshooting from Warsaw, facilitating efficient resolution of issues without the need for onsite assistance.

Sweepers

We’re proud to supply and service Bucher Municipal road sweepers, known for their durability and efficiency. Our skilled technicians expertly fit the Bucher truck-mounted units to vehicles in our workshop facility. Whether our customers need a compact sweeper or truck-mounted versions, we have

30 TERBERG ENVIRONMENTAL MAGAZINE 2024

the expertise and equipment to fulfil their requirements.

Terberg Connect

We’ve begun incorporating Terberg Connect as a standard feature in our products and are delighted with its performance. Acting as both a diagnostic tool for us and a valuable aid for our customers, its benefits are clear. In our expansive country, where distances can be considerable, remote diagnostics is proving to be particularly invaluable.

Looking towards the future

Electric vehicles are not widely used in Poland due to the high cost and lack of charging infrastructure. However, we hope to increase their usage in the future, particularly if the central government provides grants to

municipalities. On the other hand, compressed natural gas (CNG) refuse collection vehicles are popular as they emit lower levels of pollutants than diesel vehicles.

One of the primary challenges, as in other countries, is the scarcity of skilled fitters for these vehicles. Unfortunately, many individuals are not keen on pursuing careers as mechanics, often unaware that it can be a well-paid profession.

We see a lot of opportunities to increase RCV sales and broaden our product portfolio. For example, the side loaders commonly used in southern Europe could prove to be a suitable solution for some of our customers. Additionally, we see small satellite RCVs as an interesting product range. Furthermore,

Piotr Pawlowski
Since 2013, our company has experienced tremendous growth and now boasts nearly 40 staff members.

our plans involve expanding our Bucher activities by introducing winter equipment and specialized heavy-duty sweepers. With these diverse opportunities on the horizon, we anticipate continued growth in the years ahead.”

Expansion and synergy in Portugal

Resitul is based close to the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, but in the last three years has expanded its footprint north to Porto, and now, in 2024, to Algarve in the south. Under the leadership of Managing Director Sónia Santos, with the company for 19 years, Resitul has flourished in Portugal. They have increased equipment sales, diversified the product portfolio, opened new workshops, and expanded their team always with the same objective says Sónia, “To always represent the good name and the quality of Royal Terberg Group in Portugal with loyalty, sincerity and respect for all our customers and employees”.

Elevating After Sales Support

Resitul is prioritising the enhancement of after-sales and spare parts services says Sónia, “We offer quality and credibility in our equipment, the best in the Portuguese market.

Now we are helping our customers maintain equipment and repair operational damages. In 2024, we’re investing strategically in Porto and Algarve to achieve this goal.

In Porto, a larger, fully-equipped workshop will be operational by May 2024, catering to electric vehicles, metalwork and electrohydraulic repairs for clients in the north. Meanwhile, in Algarve, we’ve stationed an exclusive technician and will soon open a dedicated workshop, reducing travel costs and ensuring immediate assistance. Our efforts represent our commitment to delivering unmatched service and minimising downtime for clients.

Market

In Portugal, we lead the rear-loader market, although side-loading equipment is also used by some municipalities. In 2023, we supplied

the first two Speedline SLM units which have built trust due to their excellent performance. Recently we’ve seen a shift in the market towards specialised equipment, including cranes, refuse collectors with integrated washing systems, rotary bodies, compact equipment, and EV solutions. We are adapting to this by sourcing quality products from the Terberg Group and other external companies. We also represent Bucher Municipal sweepers, despite a previously low presence in the urban cleaning market, strategic investments in demo units and dedicated commercial efforts led to us becoming a market leader in sweepers in 2023, securing significant projects.”

Key EV project

In 2023, Resitul secured a landmark project in Portugal, winning a contract with the Municipality of Porto (EMAP) for 12 electric

sweepers, along with a five year maintenance contract. Porto stands as the pioneering municipality in Portugal, taking a significant step towards environmentally friendly urban cleaning practices by embracing 100% electric sweepers. This initiative aims to eliminate emissions, reduce noise pollution, and enhance air quality throughout the city. The sweepers, comprising 5 V20e and 7 VR50e models, feature cutting-edge technology tailored for EV sweepers and innovative solutions such as the ‘boomon-hopper’, eliminating the need for blowers which typically disperse harmful PM2.5 and PM10 particles into the air.

Porto’s investment represents a significant and commendable stride towards a greener future. Beyond improving air quality within the city, it is a shining example for municipalities worldwide, illustrating the pivotal role local authorities can play in safeguarding the environment and enhancing public health.

Resitul thanks MAP for entrusting them with this crucial project.

Terberg tractor servicing

Sónia finishes by telling us, “We also provide servicing for vehicles supplied by Terberg Tractores Iberia, showcasing synergy within the Royal Terberg Group. Terberg Tractores Iberia offers shunter tractors for ports, industries, and distribution centres in Portugal, they are building a strong reputation and market share. We support them by providing maintenance and repairs for their equipment. Our technicians are trained to handle these vehicles, and we maintain spare parts for prompt client assistance.

Steering our growth in the Portuguese market is a significant challenge, whilst maintaining trust and recognition of our quality, capacity, and loyalty. Leading such a skilled team at Resitul and representing the Royal Terberg Group is a privilege for me.”

Terberg Matec France: impressive growth, built on modesty

Before joining Terberg in 2009, director Benoit Boton worked for a refuse collection company. That means he knows how our customers use our products and understands the value of a Sales department which can give expert advice.

Benoit “In 2009 I was involved in the launch of the Olympus rear-loading compaction body and helped define product specifications for the French market. In 2014, as an After-Sales manager, I set up a new after-sales organisation with mobile technicians and a fleet of well-equipped vans. In 2019 I became responsible for sales and in 2021 I became general manager of Terberg Matec France. Throughout this evolution, I’m fortunate to have been supported by our super professional and committed team.

Expansion

Over the last four years, our turnover and headcount have tripled. This has led to expansion of our after-sales and servicing offering, which was always part of our strategy. In addition to our original two workshops, we opened another two in 2022, one last year and

another one is about to open in Lyon. So, we now have a total of six workshops covering needs around our large country, in addition to a fleet of service vans. Our customers approve of this strategy and the year-on-year increase in utilisation of these workshops confirms their appreciation.

Communication

To work effectively as a growing company you need solid communications. So we hold monthly Teams meetings - for everybody, in the office and the workshops. We start by discussing safety, then new products, recent sales and other news around Terberg Matec France and Royal Terberg Group.

Highlights

We recently delivered five Speedline SLM side loaders to a customer in Marseille, the first contract for these machines in France. The SLM impressively handles large containers, up to 3.2 m³ and 1200 kg. Olympus bodies with K Wash systems are becoming popular too, especially for organic waste collections. We also see an increase in demand for RCVs with a chute for crane loading. >

TERBERG ENVIRONMENTAL MAGAZINE 2024 35 Subsidiary focus TERBERG MATEC FRANCE

Three pillars

Our business is underpinned by three pillars: modesty, mutual support and technical skills. I think that despite our success we must stay modest. We must support each other within the company and not focus exclusively on our own work. Finally, we must have the technical skills, and be professional. For example, our salespeople know both our products and also the chassis so they can knowledgeably advise customers effectively.

Human resources will be the main challenge over the next few years. It’s very important to have a good atmosphere at work - that’s typical for Terberg. In 2022 we started a Corporate Social Responsibility programme and in 2023 we were certified as a Great Place to Work, demonstrating that we don’t just talk about being a good employer, we’re putting it into practice. Our staff, existing and new starters, all appreciate and let us know that the working atmosphere is very good.

The market

We can see from the increasing sales figures that our customers appreciate the products we offer as well as our after-sales support. Our market is divided almost equally between municipalities and private refuse collection operators. As we provide vehicles to rental companies, we have decided not to offer rentals ourselves.

Most of our vehicles are used for smaller bins for household waste, organic waste, and recyclable plastics. But sales of commercial refuse units fitted with EuroTRADE and EuroMAX bin lifts are on the rise. We also operate an increasing number of service contracts and expect that market to grow further. There has also been a significant demand for electric RCVs, around 200 in the past two years.

I am extremely excited about the future growth of our company and I am confident in our success going forward.

Terberg Control Systems: power management specialists

Based in IJsselstein, close to the Group headquarters, Terberg Control Systems is also really close to the Terberg Machines plant and Terberg Matec Nederland. Originally set up by another branch of the Terberg family, the company joined the Royal Terberg Group last year.

Robust hardware, smart software

Business Development Manager Tobias Noordhof told us more about their products and services “We build electrical panels, so power distribution, motor control centres and power management systems. Our specialty is developing control solutions for sites with less reliable public electricity supplies. Those help our customer switch between different sources of power to prevent supply interruptions. The sources include the grid, on-site generators, wind turbines, photovoltaic panels and batteries. Another benefit is that these systems can also minimise the cost of electricity by switching between the supplies.

Customers worldwide

We are one of the few suppliers which can

develop systems like that, built on 30 years experience. Those systems go to customers worldwide, in Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe - we are thoroughly familiar with local requirements for electrical installations. We build everything in-house and also develop the software here in IJsselstein - that gives us complete control over the quality of our solutions. After testing the units are shipped to site and installed by a local contractor.

When necessary one of our own engineers visits the site to commission and test the system. But in most cases we log in remotely with our Efficient Management Tool (EMT) and monitor and control the on-site systems using 2-way communication. We can troubleshoot, update and modify the software remotely, from

the Terberg Control Systems offices. To ensure security, our systems only go online when necessary.

Integrating EV charging with site power management

Of course we also deal with automotive charging systems. And that’s relevant to Terberg Environmental customers. Now that electric vehicles are used more widely sites have to balance charging EVs and feeding other electrical loads. Some customers also have on-site power generation, usually wind or PV and sometimes batteries. Our Energy Management Controller monitors all the electric loads and supplies and then balances them many times per second to ensure both uninterrupted supply and lowest costs. We have plenty of expertise with large power management systems so we can provide solutions for large fleet depots and municipal operations. We look forward to supporting TE’s customers with our smart power management solutionsa good example of synergy within RTG.”

Terberg Techniek: vehicle modification and sustainable solutions

Located not far from the Benschop plant, Terberg Techniek has long specialised in modifying heavy vehicles by installing additional axles, the X-track auxiliary front wheel drive system, container lifts and cranes. Techniek works closely with Volvo and Renault to modify trucks supplied through their dealer networks.

To meet the demand for container carriers, Techniek modifies used Terberg YT tractors by extending the chassis and installing a container lift system. The company also services, repairs and tests heavy vehicles at three sites in the Netherlands.

Renault payload upgrade

Techniek worked with Renault to develop the K 10x4 with a GVW of 74 t. The 8x4 chassis is fitted with an original Meritor tag axle to increase the payload from 38 t to 52 t. This axle has hydraulic suspension and steering and is lifted when the truck is empty. Terberg Techniek also undertakes similar upgrades of other makes and models of truck.

Battery-powered ePTO

In recent years Techniek has started developing products to support the transition to zero emissions operations. These fit in perfectly with the environmental objectives of the Royal Terberg Group. The ePTO is a battery-powered hydraulic powerpack used to drive concrete mixer bodies and heavy truckmounted cranes. This unit is particularly attractive for operations in built-up areas where the reduced noise level and elimination of exhaust emissions are clear advantages.

Hydrogen solutions

Many construction sites rely on noisy and dirty diesel generator sets. Terberg Techniek has developed a portable H2 power unit installed in a 10 foot container for easy transport. This unit incorporates fuel cells and a buffer battery and can be supplied with hydrogen from cylinders or a trailer. Another development is the conversion of excavators to use hydrogen. The company recently completed work on an impressive Liebherr 916. The conversion involved fitting electric motors to drive the hydraulic pumps, powered by fuel cells and a buffer battery.

Net zero

Arjen Barendse, Account Manager Sustainable Solutions “The construction industry wants to move towards zero emissions, and their customers and the government are also urging them to do that. Terberg Techniek’s new products, based on batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, give operators a number of options to reduce their carbon footprint. This equipment offers the same performance as traditional diesel-powered units with the added benefit of a lower noise level.”

Terberg Kinglifterspecialists in truck-mounted forklifts

Many distribution operations make deliveries to sites where there are no forklifts available for unloading the truck.

Terberg Kinglifter has a perfect solution for this: a forklift which mounts on the back of a truck. Once at the delivery site the forklift is lowered to the ground and can then unload the truck. Once finished, it only takes a few minutes to mount the Kinglifter on the truck again, ready to travel to the next drop-off point.

Versatile

Kinglifters are available in three models, from a compact unit for use in city centres

38 TERBERG ENVIRONMENTAL MAGAZINE 2024 Other Terberg Divisions

to a heavy-duty one for unloading building materials at construction sites. They are available with one or three driven wheels and there is a 4-way version for carrying long materials such as timber. One of the key features is that Kinglifters are highly robust, to withstand the elements and vibration when carried on the back of a truck. For this reason they incorporate many stainless steel components and panels, to ensure reliable operation and a good appearance after many years hard work. The patented scissor mast makes it possible to unload a truck from one side, for improved safety and efficiency.

Electric

The electric version has proven to be very popular with operators as it is more powerful and quieter than the diesel units. It is available in a range of configurations to cover all applications. Optionally the unit can be recharged while mounted on the truck, so there is no need to recharge it at the depot.

Factory expansion

Kinglifter builds the units at its plant in the Netherlands. Due to continuing growth the company will relocate to much larger premises in the area next year. The new production line is being designed with input from colleagues at Benschop.

Service

The forklifts are supplied and serviced by Terberg Kinglifter directly and by a dealer network and next day parts delivery throughout Europe. Director Bert Terberg “Customers only buy a second unit if the first one is supported by excellent service.”

Terberg Taylor Americas hosted the first North American Dealer Days in Benschop to join forces with an updated dealer network

Around June 2022, the Royal Terberg Group and The Taylor Group of Companies started the ‘Terberg Taylor Americas Group’ joint venture. Together they are setting up a new American manufacturing facility and a professional Dealer Network to support the North American customers. To introduce Terberg, several dealers were invited to join the North American Dealer Days on February 21-22 at the Terberg manufacturing location in Benschop.

Since the start of the Joint Venture, Terberg Taylor Americas Group is fully focused on the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Mississippi which is expected to produce terminal tractors around early 2024 and offers around 58 new jobs. In addition, a large distribution network for the sales, after-sales, and rental is being set up for which Terberg introduced the first North American Dealer Days. Many new and some existing dealers flew over to the Netherlands and were presented with a full program including several presentations and activities.

Chairman of the day, Ferdinand Terberg, vice-president of Terberg Taylor America

started the introduction. A team of Terberg employees, management and Board members were present to engage with the visitors. The invited dealers were given a variety of interactive presentations about Terberg and its history, the strategy, the ways of working with sales and after-sales and a factory update. As innovation is one of the core values of Terberg, upcoming engineering plans for the US market were also discussed. This topic needed input from local dealers regarding their specific knowledge of the US market to set the priorities for Terberg’s innovative power. That’s how Terberg moves forward together. The program also included activities like a tour around the factory of Terberg Benschop and a visit to the Terberg museum that shows the history of Terberg. The visitors were also given an extended teleoperation demo by a Terberg partner: Fernride, a leader in autonomous trucking.

The North American Dealer Days were a great success for all parties involved. Ideas and knowledge were shared to form a good connection between all companies. The US Terberg Taylor team will process all input and roll-out new ideas to the market. Terberg employees enjoyed the conversations and would like to thank all participants for their time, effort and input.

They are available with a capacity of 1.5 or 2.5 tonnes, end or side-loading and with single or three-wheel drive. Their low weight means they can operate in settings where conventional fork lift trucks cannot be used.

155 years of entrepreneurship

For 155 years, the Royal Terberg Group of companies have been driven to provide the best to the worlds specialist vehicle markets. With 38 operating companies in 15 countries, Terberg is a multinational independent supplier of (specialist) vehicles and vehicle systems. The Royal Terberg Group have been moving forward with an emphasis on invention, innovation, transformation and value creation.

Creating value in specialist vehicle markets

New developments are constantly taking place in the world of transport, waste management and logistics, from operational strategies to driveline technology. Companies and governments are constantly looking for opportunities to make their transport, distribution, warehousing or waste collections as optimal and profitable as possible.

Terberg wants to offer solutions to maximize the availability of vehicles and improve efficiency. This allows companies and governments to keep their transport and transport activities operational and up-to-date with optimal investments.

Focussed on sustainability

We consider the impact of our operations on people and the environment. We consider the following key issues in the running of our business:

• Reducing energy consumption.

• Workplace conditions.

• Creating a cleaner workplace and environment.

• Using natural resources sustainably.

• Developing sustainable technology

• Social policies and our relationship with the region.

Electric vehicles

We are taking the lead in this area, in all of our industry divisions. We now have valuable years of shared experience in the development and manufacture of electric vehicles. This shared experience benefits all Terberg businesses as we continue to develop an improved generation of EVs.

In addition to the electrification of our solutions, we are working with hydrogen technology to power our machines of the future.

Terberg Foundation

Every year the Royal Terberg Group makes a donation to the Terberg Foundation. The objectives of the Foundation are:

• To contribute to the independence of disadvantaged people, and so contribute to a better society.

• To contribute to good education, healthcare, and the care for young people and the elderly.

We strive to:

• Offer customers in specialist markets high-quality products with a low Total Cost of Ownership, rather than focussing on the lowest initial price.

• Supporting the entrepreneurial spirit of the operating companies and helping them to expand into new markets and products.

• Offering employees rewarding careers.

• Ensuring the continuity of Terberg as a family business.
