Current community centres have very little youths going and Joo Chiat doesn’t have much youths as well.

Since a Community Centre is built to bring people together, I find that it is only bringing in the adults and elderly.

Unli Unlike the past where more youths go to Community Centres with their friends to have fun and enjoy themselves, now they would rather go to shopping centres to hangout. It is important to bring in youths as they have the most communication power.

Dynamism is introduced to attract the youth, the community centre stands out among the traditional shophouses of Joo Chiat.

PUBLIC PLAZA The image on the left is the public plaza that is also an urban corridor that connects the users entering from the main road to the residential areas behind Variegate. The public plaza is naturally ventilated except for the internal spaces, which is air conditioned. With the way the CC is shaped, the perspective lines of the building will guide users into the CC, as well as the huge openings that will incite their curiousity. The public plaza consists of a management office, gym, heritage gallery and two commercial units for cafes. There are 2 cafes on the first storey as many youths would go to cafes to study or talk for long hours. Hence, by placing these cafes on the first floor, it would give the impression that the CC is bustling with people.

FEATURE SPACE This is the floor where the most sports activities take place, I placed the courts with reference to the front of the site and hence the structure follows this floor as it is the most difficult to solve. The baskeball and badminton courts are naturally ventilated. There is a skylight above the basketball court as harsh natural lighting is from the west and east, I can bring in warm light on top.

An Eco-Lodge

Continuing the visual effect to create a sense of privacy in an “Open Building” Allowing connection of indoor and outdoor spaces while giving privacy for the users The site has many thin trees with paths between, but is unable to be seen until you walk very near as it’s hidden by trees.

An Apar tment

To give unobstructed views to the users. To retain the modules of shop houses and recreate them in the modern era. To allocate different views to units as the views of the shop houses are very minimal.

Nearby surrounding views: Shop houses with small park next to Malay Heritage Centre. Views further away: Concourse, high rise buildings.

A Bollard

Two-gather is a bollard that aims to tackle issues of water ponding which leads to mosquito breeding. What we proposed was to have a bollard that becomes a hump when it is collapsed so that vehicles entering the park will slow down.

The bollard is designed with minimal materials used, galvanized steel and rubber strip. Galvanized steel is used for its strong durability and resistance. Rubber is used as it is malleable. The edges of the bollard also has a reflective layer that allows road users to see them in the dark.

No water collection by allowing water to flow through to the ground

Key

Using the concept of a bicycle lock, every bollard has a lock installed on it and there are different keys to its lock for designated authorisation.

No bollard down

2 bollards (II, III) down

Another feature we proposed was to have selective accessibility for specific user groups. The access of these different groups of people will be determined by the width of access required and also the frequency of their usage. Each bollard comes with a customised lock. There are a total of 3 different types of lock for different authorities. Each party will be given a customised key so as to enter the premises without troubling NParks.
