Your Magic Wand for Less Drama, More Love Dr. Laura Markham is the author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and has worked as a parenting coach with countless parents across the English-speaking world, both in person and via phone. by Dr. Laura Markham “There's nothing tiny or insignificant. Everything is significant... Whether you are looking at world events or something that's happening in your kitchen, there's potential for connection or disconnection in either case. And it is really only the connection or the disconnection that is of any importance.” – Abraham Hicks How's your week going? Have you had a moment of connection with your child that made your heart melt? You need that kind of moment every day, to be happy as a parent. Why? Because parenting is hard, and those moments of love are what keep us going. That connection is what reminds us that our child is a young human doing the best she can, even when we wish she'd act differently. And since we have the privilege of seeing our kids at their worst, that connection renews

It would be like giving yourself a magic wand. There would be no more yelling in your home. Some heart-felt tears, maybe. Lots of hugging, smiling, laughing, fun.

RELAX & INDULGE *Spa Days — Sycamore Mineral Springs is known for it’s outstanding spa, and every treatment includes a soak in the property’s peaceful mineral springs. The award-winning spa offers an array of pampering massages and facials in a beautiful, tranquil setting. *Room Service & A Soak — Nothing feels like pampered luxury quite like room service, and staying in is exactly what you’ll feel like doing once you take a dip in your very own, private hot mineral springs outdoor tub. Each of the 72 guest rooms in the hotel features a private tub on the outdoor patio. For a luxurious evening in, order a bottle of wine and artisan cheese plate from the hotel’s delicious onsite restaurant, The Gardens of Avila Restaurant, and take a long soak under the stars. *Fine Dining — The San Luis Obispo area is a foodie’s haven, but for a truly memorable meal head to Novo Restaurant & Lounge, a gorgeous creekside restaurant serving eclectic, global fare with a focus on seasonal, local ingredients. Fresh diver scallops, Korean-style short ribs, and crabtopped filet mignon all compete for best entree at this ambiance-rich spot. *Farm Fun — Spend a relaxing afternoon browsing local goods at Avila Valley Barn, which us just a few minutes down the road from the hotel. This muststop family-owned farm boasts fresh, local fruit, produce, BBQ and baked goods, as well as a hay maze, goat feeding, and pony and tractor rides for the kids. *Wine Tasting — Filipponi Ranch is a wonderful winery tucked away among rolling hills, with a shaded tasting area and laid-back, casual service. If you're tasting with children-in-tow, ask if you can let them run around in the scenic outdoor wedding venue area. Here, a bocce ball court and oversized tree swing make for fun distractions while grownups relax and sip. 10 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | JUNE 2021

ADVENTURE & EXPLORE *Onsite Bike Rentals — Sycamore Mineral Springs offers convenient bike rentals and direct onsite access to the Bob Jones Trail, which runs all the way to the quaint beachside town of Avila Beach. It’s just a short bike ride to the beach from the resort, and there are also off-road cycling trails to enjoy if you're really feeling adventurous! Bike rentals include helmets, and locks. Bikes with baby trailers or tandem bikes are also available. *Horseback Riding — Both novice and skilled horseback riders will enjoy the sweeping views and fun adventure of Madonna Inn Trail Rides. Children and adults ages 7 and up are welcome to experience this one-hour horseback ride along stunning hillside paths behind the famous Madonna Inn. *Hiking — Take advantage of your close proximity to the Sycamore Crest Trail during your stay for a memorable 1-hour hike (1.75 Miles) through lush forested paths filled with ferns, moss and oaks. Despite the steady elevation, the trail offers generous shade, so it’s suitable even on a hot day. *Sightsee — Do some exploring and check out the area’s most famous landmarks and tourist spots, such as the historic Mission San Luis Obispo, founded in 1772, and the sticky hot spot Bubblegum Alley, where visitors add hundreds of pieces of gum a day to the 15-foothigh wall. *Scooter Rentals — Thrill seekers will love zipping along the Bob Jones Trail in a rental electric scooter or Ebike from BoltAbout Electric Bikes in Avila Beach. Electric Bikes and Electric Scooters are both available for rent by the hour or day, with kids trailers available for rent with Ebike rentals.

FAMILY WEEKEND GETAWAY: PASO ROBLES by Elizabeth Kang Nestled among vineyards and surrounded by rolling hills on the central California coast, Paso Robles is as fun to visit as it is to say. Known for its famous wineries, natural hot springs and abundant agriculture, Paso Robles is a popular weekend getaway for both southern and northern Californians. This wine-country destination isn’t just for adults, however, especially since it now plays host to one of the state’s newest attraction — Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio. This dazzling outdoor display of lights is sure to wow every member of the family, and makes for a unique, family friendly activity (and fun excuse for a short road trip down the coast.) Reserve your tickets online, pack up a weekender bag, and hit the road to experience a memorable weekend getaway with the family. What to See Bruce Munro: Light At Sensorio — Otherworldly is the word that comes to mind when you take in this one-ofa-kind art destination in the hills of Paso Robles. Like a scene straight out of Avatar, a 15-acre field of 58,800+ color-changing technicolor lights adorn the fields like glowing flowers set on another planet. It’s an aweinspiring effect that delighted my two young daughters, (as well as myself and my husband.) This immersive outdoor art exhibit will run through September 30, 2021, with opening times that change as the sunset hour changes with the seasons. With colorful, fiber-optic lights, the exhibit must be viewed in the evening, when the thousands of glowing spheres can be properly seen in all their alighted glory. Don’t miss the newest wing of the exhibit, the Light Towers, where artist Bruce Munro has arranged more than 17,000 wine bottles in dazzling color-morphing towers. Know before you go: Food and beverage trucks are onsite, as well as bathrooms. Be sure to bring a stroller and blanket if you come with young children, because this outdoor-only exhibit is walk-through and tiny legs

may get fatigued (and cold.) Where to Stay Allegretto Vineyard Resort —The area’s best hotel, by far, is located right off the freeway near downtown Paso Robles. Families love its upscale, Tuscan-inspired aesthetic, serene outdoor pool, and fun, daily activities. This serene refuge is not only stunning, with gorgeous fountains and Italian-inspired statues tucked away throughout the property, but also fun for both adults and children. Allegretto features a sparkling, outdoor pool with convenient poolside service, and cozy cabanas to rent. Kids can play in the spacious outdoor courtyard while parents indulge in a wine-tasting session, featuring the hotel’s very own wine (which is produced from vineyards surrounding the hotel and/or grown nearby.) There are also bocce ball courts, a ping pong table and a giant outdoor chess board to play games on. Know before you go: Be sure to make reservations for the onsite tasting room, restaurant or spa, as they all can book up quickly on weekends. If staying with children, try to request a room near the pool, where you can easily walk back and forth from your private patio. Lastly, browse the daily activity guide so you don’t miss out on fun activities such as olive oil tastings, yoga classes, live music, and vineyard tours. Where to Eat Paso Robles boasts quite an emerging foodie scene, finally catching up to its fantastic wines. The area is chock-full of family friendly eats, and it’s challenging to narrow down the options when you're staying for just a few nights. Cello Ristorante & Bar — Allegretto Vineyard Resort’s onsite restaurant offers a delicious brunch selection along with charming service in a beautiful, tranquil setting. Here, guests enjoy brunch favorites such as JUNE 2021 | ACTIVE FAMIL Y 13

Belgian Waffles, Eggs Benedict, breakfast burritos, and mimosas, of course. Red Scooter Deli — In addition to great, wallet-friendly eats, this cute little deli is located within walking distance to a fantastic children’s park, where kids can burn off steam before the drive home. Don’t miss their delicious made-to-order sandwiches on freshly baked bread, along with salads, soups and smoothies. The breakfast 14 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | JUNE 2021

sandwiches on brioche buns are also heavenly. Comfort American Kitchen — We ordered ahead and picked up dinner from this bustling hot spot, which was just a short drive from the hotel. On our hotel’s outdoor porch table, we enjoyed a sinfully crispy fried chicken entree, fresh-as-can-be roasted beet salad, and a generous helping of mac n cheese from the children’s menu.

Helping Kids Open Up:

7 Tips to Improve Communication by Amy McCready You’re greeting your child after her first day at a new school. Barely contained Parenting expert and “recovering yeller” Amy McCready is the Founder of Positive Parenting Solutions and the author of If I Have to Tell You One More Time… The Revolutionary Program That Gets Your Kids to Listen Without Nagging, Reminding or Yelling (Penguin, 2011.) excitement barrels out as you ask, “How was your first day, honey?!” “OK,” she says. “Oh, just OK? Well, do you like your new teacher,” you press on. “Sure,” she says. “Alright. Well, do you have anything else you can tell me about your first day?” “No,” she replies. Despite any further prodding, all questions lead to a dead end. After patiently awaiting all the juicy details from the first-day festivities, these reluctant one-word answers are anticlimactic and frustrating. (Especially when your friend’s daughter gave her an entire rundown of the day–including who has a crush on who, what Emma ate for lunch, and that Mrs. Spurgeon’s dog got sick last night–all in a total of five minutes.) Without explicit details, how can you gauge how the day really went? Did she say “OK” as in just fine? Or as in kinda bad? Was it just her abrupt way to dismiss your question and avoid talking about all the things that went wrong?

5. Focus on Quality Time Together The best relationships thrive on communication. The more you focus on your bond with your child, the more likely she’ll share things with you. It doesn’t matter whether or not she has become tightlipped or distant. Daily and uninterrupted one-on-one time (while doing something that she loves) is the best way to improve your emotional connection. When you prioritize this time, you might even be surprised what your shy kindergartener or sullen tween is willing to share with you. It’s easy to let our busy schedules push this extremely important tactic to the side, but whatever you do, fight against this tendency. Even if you find time to be one-on-one with your kids, it

A weightier subject opener could be, “How did it make you feel when your friend moved away yesterday?” In any of these cases, you could still be met with a passive “I don’t know.” Regardless, your method of questioning invites a more detailed conversation and may work in your favor. 7. Model Healthy Communication Our children are always learning from us–even when they’re older and we wonder if they’re listening. Try opening any voids in communication by talking about your day or mentioning something that’s on your mind. If you’re always willing to express your feelings, they should feel free to do so, too. Also, try to end your conversation by saying, “Thanks for listening. I feel better

#1

IT’S UH-MAZING POOL SCENE — The grand scale of the Fairmont Scottsdale is breathtaking, and with 65-acres, it’s no surprise that a resort this large would have an impressive selection of pools. There’s a pool for every mood, with six sparkling pools to choose from. Looking for action? Head to the Sonoran Splash Pool, where a DJ spins fun music, two 200-ft waterslides entertain kids and adults alike. Craving a quieter scene? There’s a serene adultsonly pool (Sonoran Landing Pool) where grownup libations are served pool-side. The stunning Princess Pool boasts the best hot tubs for star-gazing, and cozy cabanas offer a shaded respite. The 9,000-square-ft Sunset Beach Pool is the largest pool on the property and features a white-sand entryway and sunset pool parties.

#2

THE SPACIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS — The accommodations at this beautiful resort are spacious and comfortable, with a variety of rooms —750 total — ranging from 525 to 1500 square feet. #3

TO-DIE-FOR DINING — In our experience, it’s not often you find a five-star resort with dining that lives up to the accommodations, but the Fairmont Scottsdale is a happy exception. With four exceptional restaurants, a lively bar and delicious poolside cafes, the resort offers a sumptuous array of quality dining. Look no further than Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar for an unforgettable Girls’ Night Out. For an unforgettable fine dining experience, Bourbon Steak is a must. Celebrated chef Michael Mina created the menu at this classic American-Style steakhouse, and the steaks and seafood entrees here are perfectly prepared. Ironwood American Kitchen is a go-to for a

casual breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a delectable mimosa weekend brunch. La Hacienda offers guests a fun and lively atmosphere alongside classic Mexican fare.

#4

THE NIGHTLIFE — There’s always something fun to do after dark here, thanks to the resort’s lively bar scene and happening event schedule. Enjoy a hot summer night out at The Plaza Bar with the girls for an unforgettable night of craft cocktails, inviting fire pits and lots of laughter. Just outside of the resort, Top Golf — one of our favorite spots for a memorable night out — is located a short Uber ride from the resort. Here, your group of friends can sip, nosh and practice golf swings in a lively, casual atmosphere. The high-tech driving range is amazing, the service is friendly and the swanky lounge is the perfect spot to dance, laugh and mingle.

#5

OFF-SEASON DEALS — Although many people flock to Scottsdale in Winter, when the desert temps well exceed those back at home, we love to visit in Spring and Summer, when both the temperature and deals are hot. Visiting offseason can shave a significant amount of the room rate, and it can also mean way fewer crowds. And besides, when you spend most of the day in the pools, that hot, dry desert air feels pretty nice!

#6

THE SOOTHING SPA — A day spent at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess may be the closest we’ve come to heaven. It’s a luxurious and rejuvenating respite from the sun, and not to be missed. Here, you and your friends will be pampered like royalty, whether you opt for a massage, facial, pedicure, or all of the above. Plan on spending at least a few hours here, because you’ll want to take full advantage of all of the soothing amenities, such as the therapeutic whirlpool, fitness center, cold plunge pool, steam room, and sauna. A spa treatment also gets you access to the rooftop adults-only pool and grotto waterfall.

#7

THE LOCATION — Set against the mountains of the stunning

Sonoran Desert, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is a quick drive from the Phoenix Airport, and is located in the heart of the luxurious Scottsdale resort area. Here, there are exciting shopping plazas, delicious restaurants and lively bars all within a quick ride away.

#8

COMMITMENT TO SAFETY — The resort is deeply committed to its guests’ safety, and it shows. We appreciated their strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols during our stay, ensuring that the pools remained at a controlled capacity, rooms and shared surfaces were properly cleaned, and masks were enforced where appropriate.

#9

THE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES — There’s always a fun way to spend some fun the sun at the Fairmont Scottsdale, and with 333 days of sunshine, every day is guaranteed to be glorious. Whether it’s a morning on the greens playing golf on the lush, sweeping fairways, or taking in the views in the nearby Camelback Mountain hiking area, hitting your daily steps quota is an enjoyable feat in this desert oasis. When it gets too hot to handle the afternoon sun, check out Scottsdale Fashion Square or one of the many fabulous shopping centers in the area for some fantastic (airconditioned) retail therapy.

#10

IMPECCABLE SERVICE — A stay at this regal resort truly does make you feel like royalty. The service is flawless, and the highly trained staff are always welcoming and hospitable. It’s truly everything you’d expect from Arizona’s longest running AAA five-diamond hotel, and then some. 30 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | JUNE 2021
