6 Ways to Reconnect With Family When You Disconnect from Technology by Dr. Gail Gross Time spent together as a family is critical, especially if you have younger children who are still developing socially, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Focused family time can even help boost a child’s health and IQ. So put down the cell phones and prepare to pick up some stronger family bonds. Here are some ways you can reconnect with the important people in your life while remaining disconnected from technological distractions. 1. Start the day with a morning ritual. Consider easing into the day together as a family by doing some sort of relaxing activity. For instance, you can download one of my audio meditations and meditate together for 20 minutes, and then enjoy a leisurely breakfast together. By starting the day together as a family with clarity and focus, you set the tone for a more positive day ahead. In fact, studies show that families who eat one meal together have children that perform better in school. 2. Visit a family friend or relative you haven’t seen in a while. Is there a family friend, brother, sister, aunt, or uncle that you only communicate with via Facebook and email, but they live less than an hour away? Use this day to reconnect in real life. Remember: children do what they see, and when they

ADVENTURE UP THE NORTHERN COAST Many East Bay locals are tempted to head south for an oceanside vacation, but for dramatic and spectacular views of surf and sand, try driving

north, instead, to a much cooler climate and far fewer crowds on the Sonoma coastline. There is plenty of adventure to be had for everyone,
including visiting historical parks, exploring beaches, and tasting local wines. But first, reserve lodging at a resort you may not want to leave at all.
[ TRAVEL ]
– STAY – Timber Cove Resort is nestled on a sweeping bluff in Jenner, Ca, and is the perfect lodging choice for a romantic, cozy getaway or adventurous family weekend, and everything in between. The resort is somewhat of an icon in the area, having been established in the 1960’s, and is known for its unbelievably breathtaking location on Timber Cove, with cliffside views of the sea. The property is a majestic blend of lush forest filled with redwoods and eucalyptus, and sandy cliffside with views of rocky beach and crashing waves. Although the resort was very recently renovated, the mid-century, 60’s charm still remains, and provides a hip juxtaposition with the modern, rustic finishes. The lobby stays loyal to
its roots, with midcentury lounge furniture and a huge, rustic rock fireplace. Inside the rooms, however, you’ll experience modern, luxurious amenities such as slate-floor bathrooms with separate, soaking tubs, vaulted ceilings with retractable sky-lights, and cozy, plush beds with stark white linens. Rooms are equipped with a working record player and oldschool Smeg refrigerator —playful nods to the resort’s birth decade. The view from most rooms are nothing short of spectacular, with either cliffside ocean views, views of the gorgeous Timber Cove, or forest views. Whether you book an ocean, cove or forest view, there’s truly no bad room in the resort. While Timber Cove Resort is an ideal couple’s getaway,
if you happen to be staying with children, the resort has created a fun scavenger hunt that serves as a great way to explore the gorgeous property, (and even without kids it’s a worthwhile adventure). The resort owner’s daughter, Sofia, created “Sofia’s Treasure Hunt,” where guests follow instructions on a selfguided stroll throughout the property to find clues and answer questions about the surroundings. At the end of the hunt, kids can return their completed scavenger hunt questionnaire to the front desk for a small toy “treasure.” It’s a fun and exciting way to explore the vast property, but can be precarious, as some of the trails are only a few feet away from dangerous cliff sides, so those with very small children will want to keep them close at hand.

HOW TO GET HERE From Fort Ross, head down the coast to explore the many beautiful beaches on the Sonoma Coastline. Schoolhouse Beach offers an easy walk from the car to a picturesque beach of tiny pebbles and some tide pools with hermit crabs, starfish, mussels and other sea creatures. Just a little south you’ll find Goat Rock Beach, named after the impressive, huge rock structure jetting out from the beach. Eighties film fans might be excited to know that the pirate ship scene from the hit movie “Goonies,” was filmed on Goat Rock State Beach. Further south you’ll find Portuguese Beach, which is not swim-friendly but a great beach to roam with your dog, or take a casual stroll and have a picnic. www.timbercoveresort.com

5 Relationship Killers and How to Avoid Them by Dr. Margaret Paul As a relationship counselor, I am constantly being asked why so many relationships fail. In the 48 years that I have worked with couples, I have discovered five major relationship killers: Controlling Behavior Most people enter a relationship with a deep fear of rejection, and this fear motivates various forms of controlling behavior. Controlling behavior falls into two major categories - overt control and covert control. Overt control includes many forms of attack, such as blaming anger, rage, violence, judgment, criticism and ridicule. Covert control includes compliance, enabling, withdrawal, defending, explaining, lying and denying. Often a person at the other end of attack will respond with some form of covert control in an attempt to have control over not being attacked. Controlling behavior always results in resentment and emotional distance,

- which is really an attempt to have control over not being controlled - the relationship becomes immobilized. Partners in this relationship system feel frustrated, stagnant and resentful. Neediness Many people enter a relationship believing that it is their partner’s job to fill their emptiness, take away their aloneness, and make them feel good about themselves. When people have not learned how to take responsibility for their own feelings and needs, and to define their own
The way out is through a devoted practice of Inner Bonding to develop a loving adult self who knows how to take full responsibility for your own feelings and needs. You will move beyond controlling, needy and addictive behavior only when you learn how to fill your self with love and define your own inner worth. When you are willing to take your eyes off your partner’s plate and turn your eyes fully on yourself, you can begin to do the inner work necessary to heal yourself and your relationship.

important news. Substance and Process Addictions Most people who feel empty inside turn to substance and process addictions in an attempt to fill their emptiness and take away the pain of their aloneness and loneliness. Alcohol and drug abuse, food, spending, gambling, busyness, Internet sex and pornography, affairs, work, TV, accumulating things, beautifying and so on, can all be used as ways to fill emptiness and avoid fears of failure, inadequacy, rejection and engulfment. And they are all ways of shutting out your partner. Eyes on Partner’s Plate Many people are acutely aware of what their partner

Youth Sports Nutrition Tips by Jill Castle As the fall sport season begins, many young athletes will train, work hard and expect to see the results of their efforts. From new equipment to top notch coaching techniques, young athletes will be looking to gain an upper hand on the competition. A lot goes into having a great season! One area that helps all young athletes improve their athletic performance is nutrition. Ask the Expert: Goal Setting & Attainment: A Recovery Plan for Injured Young Athletes by James Faison, PTA, ATC, CSCSCenter for Young Athletes Q: Why is goal setting important when a young athlete is injured? A: Discussing and developing a series of goals should always be the first step when working with someone who is injured. When working with young people who are injured it is important to emphasize goals throughout the rehabilitation process. Goals help motivate, focus and crystalize effort when times get tough. Revisiting goals periodically and celebrating the achievement of meeting each goal is a crucial component of injury rehabilitation, especially with children. Q: What kinds of things can young athletes and their families do to help in attaining their recovery goals? A: There are several concepts that help in attaining recovery goals: Concept #1: Write it down How can your child or teen make progress toward their goals if they don’t remember what they are? Write down their goals, post them somewhere that they can see them, and revisit them often. If a young athlete is getting frustrated by the lack of progress, break the goals up into smaller, more attainable chunks. Concept #2: Consistency is more important than Intensity A crucial concept with regards to goal attainment is to work at accomplishing goals every day. No days off. It’s the little things that the athlete does every day to get better that have a big impact in progress toward goal attainment. James D. Faison works at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital at the Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes in Walnut Creek. He has been providing injury rehabilitation for over 10 years to the children of the Bay Area as a Physical Therapist Assistant and Certified Athletic Trainer.
Concept #3: It isn’t good enough to just want it. A wise man once said that, “The will to win is easy; it’s the will to prepare to win that really counts.” To get better and make improvements, your child or teen will have to work. Hard work and determination in the face of adversity is often the solution to even the most complex problems. Concept #4: Remember to review goal progress Everyone has bad days and sometimes lack motivation. It is in these down times that it helps to look back at how far your child or teen has actually come. They should think about the progress they have made and reinvest in the process of improvement. Q: How can parents help motivate their athlete? A: In this new culture of oversharing and selfies, some people may confuse pride for boastfulness. I firmly believe that one of the most inspiring things that an adult can say to a child is “I believe in you” and once they have made good progress toward attaining their goals tell them “I’m proud of you.” There is nothing in life that is more rewarding than helping a child through a tough time in their life, and continually reflecting on their goals is a great way to keep them on track! [ MARRIAGE & RELATIONSHIPS ]
Why My Husband Infuriates Me by Christine Carter, Ph.D. The other night, I did something that I am not proud of. We have four teenagers, so dinnertime is never dull, but this particular evening it was full chaos. One of our kids had not eaten much. My husband, Mark, really wanted this kid to eat more, and so he offered a bribe/threat: You can’t go hang out with your friends until you finish everything on your plate. A power struggle unfolded, complete with sibling cheering sections. I tried to shut it all down using dramatic non-verbal cues. This was not what we agreed to do when a kid doesn’t eat well, I screamed silently with my supercharged glares. I was not successful. The picky eater ate what was required in order to go hang out in the neighborhood.
Christine Carter, Ph.D.*, is a sociologist and happiness expert at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. She is the author of “RAISING HAPPINESS: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents.” She teaches online happiness classes that help parents bring more joy into their own lives and the lives of their children, and she writes an award-winning blog for *Greater Good* (www.greatergoodparents.org).
Although I was obviously right (chuckle) in my frustration–because bribing kids can work in the short run, but research clearly demonstrates that it backfires in the long run–this post is actually about what I did next, and why I did it. The next night, I intended to calmly raise the issue so that we could prevent similar dinnertime spectacles in the future. I knew that I couldn’t make accusations or do anything that might make Mark defensive, because people don’t learn well when they are being criticized. Let the record show that I was not even remotely uncritical. I opened with something like “How could you have been so stupid?” And then I started to rant. “Haven’t we talked about that situation a million times? We have a freaking PLAN for this!! We’ve AGREED what we will do about picky eating!! Why can’t you follow through with the plan? Why can’t you understand how important it is to be consistent?” He responded calmly. I rolled my eyes with contempt and superiority. I was such. an. ass. I do not know of any parent, myself included, who has not at some point threatened, bribed, or otherwise manipulated a child into doing what they

[ PARENTING ]
The Importance of Healthy Family Home Rhythm by The Growing Room Is family bedtime a constant battle? Do transitional activities result in the digging in of heels, complaints, and tears? Is mealtime a battle of wills? Does your child experience anxiety surrounding new activities? The constant resistance to parental guidance and support can take its toll on well-meaning, over-worked parents. There is a solution and its simplicity may surprise you—rhythm. The creation of rhythm in our homes has a magical effect on children’s behavior. Rhythm strengthens parental authority as it creates channels for discipline that are more intrinsic than opposed. It provides security, safety, and predictability that contribute to a child’s sense of order and well-being. Rhythm creates connections and closeness. For a parent, it simplifies and adds quality to family life. And, while it may seem daunting to commit to activities that create a healthy family rhythm with regularity, the outcome will serve as motivation to continue the quest! Rhythm versus Routine While the two terms are often used interchangeably, rhythm reflects those daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal changes that make up the cadence of our lives. Conversely, the concept of routine can conjure up rigid timelines and inflexible schedules. Rhythm is distinct from routine in that it’s about the ebb and the flow—a fluid grace as opposed to stern schedules. When we are considering implementing a healthy home rhythm we must consider the individual needs of all family members: quiet and active times, the coming together or moving apart, downtime versus structured activities. It is about finding the point of balance in your family’s day—that sweet spot between rigidity and chaos. Rhythms are markers that not only provide the steady calm but also punctuate those special occasions. Rhythm values lie in the intention behind it. Rhythm Provides Security through Predictability For many of us these are uncertain times. Worries about the economic, social, or the political landscape are the cause of anxiety for many Americans. It is the concern of the unknown—those elements out of our control— that fuels anxieties, and so it is for our children. When the only predictable aspect of our family schedule is its unpredictability, it is time to revisit our priorities! Children thrive where there is a sense of order. Rhythms are markers of our days, weeks, and years that we either impose or bestow upon our children. They can bring a sense of security, safety, and peace to our homes or create patterns that are well beyond a child’s sensory world. It is within those chaotic family patterns where children exhibit behavioral problems. Rhythm Eases Child Anxiety and Resistance to Transitions A wonderful daily rhythm that easily accommodates most families schedule and 32 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | OCTOBER 2017

process takes the uncertainty— and for many children— the anxiousness, out of their day. As mentioned above, when establishing rhythm we must look at the intention behind it. The key is implementing this rhythm when you don’t have one foot out of the door or your cell phone under your chin. A successful rhythm lies in the quality of the process. It provides the opportunity to connect with your children in a meaningful, purposeful way. And, while your child doesn’t have autonomy to control their own days, they can feel safe and secure knowing that someone competent and caring is at the helm.
fight that they are sure to win. Well-meaning parents concerned about their children’s comfort (and feeling worn-down after a long day) will often give in to food preference demands. A healthy rhythm at dinner doesn’t start with the first bite. Involving children in food prep is a rhythm that will not only ease the transition to the dinner table but will create children who have a vested interest or stake in the meal. They are more likely to try something new if they have helped prepare it some way. Another helpful rhythm is a weekly menu that family members can look forward to and count

Your Physical Well Being by Hayes B. Gladstone, MD
October is a busy month. With school in full swing and after school activities taking wide swaths of time and the holidays on the horizon, it is sometimes easy to forget about taking care of yourself. Well being is comprehensive. It includes taking care of yourself physically, Hayes B. Gladstone, MD is the founder and President of the Gladstone Clinic in San Ramon. He is the former Director of the Division of Dermatologic Surgery and Associate Professor in the Departments of Dermatology and Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Stanford University
intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Each component of your well being reinforces the other in both positive and negative ways. Physically, it is important to both exercise on a regular basis and maintain excellent nutrition. Exercising means at least 5 days per week. It should vary so exercise doesn’t become stale, but also so you strengthen different muscle groups and create more muscle flexibility particularly in your core. Exercise should include both aerobic and anaerobic exercise since the most important muscle is your heart. Stressing it in a positive, gradual and consistent manner creates more stamina and energy. Given busy schedules, it is easy to push exercise to another day. Attending aerobic, or spin classes can create a more definitive commitment. Hiring a personal trainer who can optimize your exercise regimen as well as teach you proper techniques can be very rewarding. Healthy eating habits are also key to your physical well being. It is a truism that Americans eat portions that are much too large as well as too much processed “fast food” and GMO food. Many years ago, a famous study followed Japanese individuals and their incidence of heart disease when they lived in Japan, and

Eating a balanced diet with non-fried foods, fish and heavy in anti-oxidants such as berries provides a strong foundation for a healthy lifestyle. As we age, our metabolism slows. Genetics also plays a role. A healthy diet and regular exercise may not be enough to remove stubborn pockets of fat. In women, most commonly these are along the abdomen, flanks, back, bra area and thighs. In men, it is mostly the lower abdomen and flanks (“love handles”). Two cosmetic procedures known as Coolsculpting and Ultratone can play a role in helping you obtain the physical presence that you want. Coolsculpting also known as cryolipolysis is a brilliant method for fat reduction and contour improvement. It freezes fat without harming the skin. There is no downtime. Your fat dissolves and is excreted over 3-4 months. It is not for weight loss, but it does help clothes fit better. At the Gladstone Clinic, we provide a comfortable and relaxing environment. We have dual Coolsculpting machines which allows us to treat multiple sites. Coolsculpting provides one aspect of improving body contour. However, muscle toning and strengthening is also an important aspect of your physical well being. At the Gladstone Clinic, we have the Ultratone machine
