How to Have a Stress-Free Family Holiday by Dr. Gail Gross When you greet one another this time of year, you say things like “Happy Holidays,” “Merry Christmas,” and “Happy Hanukkah.” Expectation has a lot to do with stress, and you are expected to be happy during the holidays. Yet for many families, the “happy” and “merry” expectations this time of year can cause great stress and anxiety – not just for you as an adult, but for your children, too. It is important to remember as you rush around trying to create the perfect holiday ambiance, buy the perfect holiday gifts for everyone, and create the perfect holiday meal- that your children are watching. And, if you turn the holidays into a stressful production, that is how your children will view the holidays as well. Children reflect, model, and take their cues from their parents. On the other hand this is the perfect opportunity for you as the parent to model for your children what this time is really about: bonding, togetherness, giving, and making memories. Remember: the holidays are one of the few times in the year that the whole world conspires to love. During this time, watch your children for typical signs of stress, which include: • Wetting the bed, and other forms of returning to regressive childhood • Changes in eating habits

8 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | DECEMBER 2016

[ PARENTING ] • Changes in grades and school behavior • Crankiness, because they’re too tired from rushing about from place to place A healthy way to move past feelings of stress, depression, and sadness is to use that energy in a positive and constructive manner. By focusing on others, you teach your children how to activate their altruistic sense of compassion and goodwill. Acting on these feelings through random acts of kindness, you and your children can reduce stress and replace it with the warm glow of satisfaction. My quick tips for making the holidays less stressful:

likes the seashore, draw her a picture of the seashore. • Talk with family elders about the way in which they celebrated the holidays in their youth. Life is just a collection of your memories, children love to hear the happy and fun experiences that make up the moments of their family history. The memories you make with your children are really what life is about, and your relationships with others are the key to those memories. By simplifying your life and managing expectations during this time of the year, you can focus on what is really important: family, community, compassion, and togetherness. The holidays don’t have

• Simplify your life: take a quite warm bath with candlelight and aromatherapy as a time out gift to yourself. • Take your children to volunteer at a shelter together as a family. • Gather old coats, blankets, food and donate them to families in need. • With your children, make gifts for friends and relatives with the recipients in mind. For example, if Aunt Sally

to be a time of great financial expenditure. Make gifts with your children that have meaning because they were created by them with thought and love for each particular family friend or family member. By taking the focus off of the hustle and bustle and the commercialism of the holidays, we help reduce the stress in our lives, and in turn, help our children learn to enjoy a stress-free holiday season that is full of meaning and memories.

“Is Santa Real, Mommy?” by Betsy Brown Braun One of the signs (sometimes laced with a bit of sadness) that your child is growing up is when the inevitable question comes, Is Santa real? While it seems so simple, it is one that puts many a parent into a tail spin. What should I say? Should I tell him the truth? Should I lie? Won’t he be so disappointed? What if he accuses me of having lied to him when he finds out the truth? Let me put your mind at ease. You have not been lying to your child if you have allowed Santa Claus to be part of your Christmas celebration. Santa is a cultural myth; he is part of our folklore. Almost all young children’s celebration of Christmas has included Santa Claus at some point. He is part of the magic of the holiday. And it is thrilling for children to believe that there is a guy with a white beard and a red suit, who flies through the sky in sleigh pulled by reindeer that carries enough toys for all the children in the whole world. He lands on your roof, finds the exact present Betsy Brown Braun, best selling author of Just Tell Me What to Say: Sensible Tips and Scripts for Perplexed Parents (HarperCollins) and You’re Not The Boss Of Me: Brat proofing Your Four To Twelve Year Old (HarperCollins), is a child development and behavior specialist, parent educator, multiple birth parenting consultant, and founder of Parenting Pathways®, Inc. Her parenting expertise has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, Real Simple, American Baby, Cookie, Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, In Style, Parenting, Parents, Pregnancy and Newborn, Twins, Woman’s Day, and, Working Mother, Colorado Parent Magazine, Ohio Valley Parent Magazine among other publications. you want, comes into your house via the chimney, leaves the gift, eats the cookies, gulps the milk, and climbs back up that same chimney, now off to the next house. You’d have to believe in magic to buy that one! How lucky are young children that they do. Oh to believe in magic and Santa again. our child will ask if Santa is real. It might come when he is 5 or even much older, at 8 or 9. The impossibility of the story might just dawn on him, or his buddy who has an older brother might burst his balloon. But when your child comes to you, what do you say? “Well, what do you believe?” Because he wants the magic, he’ll believe. But then that questioning, growing-up voice will persist. “But what do YOU believe?” I am not someone who wants to rain on a child’s parade, and I don’t think you are lying. I think you are doing what your mother did for you, and what her mother did for her. You are passing down the folklore, keeping up the tradition, and allowing your child to fully enjoy the magic while he can. “When I was a little girl, I believed in Santa Claus. Now that I am grown up, I have different ideas about him. Each person gets to decide for himself if he thinks Santa is real. What I can tell you for sure is that the story of Santa is part of celebrating Christmas, just like Frosty and Christmas trees and lights and wreaths.” And when your 10 year old is on the verge of spilling the beans, bring him into your inner circle. “When Grandma was a little girl, her mommy told her about Santa, and when I was little, Grandma told me about Santa, and when you were little, I told you about Santa. And now you get to help me keep the story going and let your little brother believe in Santa. One day, he will figure it out, just like you did. But he’s just a little boy, so help me to pass on the story to him.”

And it’s probably AOK. But even if it is not “ok” with the boss or your colleagues, what is the cost of bending yourself into a pretzel to hide the fact that you’ve got kids, a spouse and a life outside the office? Clearly, they know you have a family. There’s that picture on your desk of a chocolate covered 6-year old girl with a grin that accentuates the fact that she has been keeping the tooth fairy mighty busy lately. But maybe she’s your niece? And of course, you were pregnant approximately 6 years ago. Some of your

1. When you are asked what you did over the weekend, tell the truth. 6 back to back soccer games in 110 degree heat – and you loved every minute of it.

They secretly marveled that you were a kind of super woman; charging into the office with the stamina of a thoroughbred fueled by a commitment to work, lots of donuts (ah cravings) and an underlying fear that if you slowed down at all – you would become irrelevant and replaceable. Then came the baby – and like the champion you are,

2. If your phone starts buzzing because the school is calling, tell the truth. Be authentic. In the long run, people who matter will appreciate and value you. 3. If you have to stay home because your child is sick, tell the truth. Your colleagues will be amazed by what you can achieve in between taking temperatures. 4. If you feel that colleagues are judging you, realize

You drove across town to get her and bring her back to the office just in time for that all important meeting in the office conference room.

In fact, when you share yourself in a more integrated way, you may find that you have more room for creative ideas and professional momentum. Promotion anyone?

And as you strolled back into the office wishing you could tuck her adorableness into your giant briefcase, you wondered what people might think. If the boss walked by to see her sitting at your desk and doodling, would he question your loyalty and dedication? Maybe so – but maybe not. And how much stress and energy is it worth to be concerned? No one wants a parent regaling them with each and every moment of a child’s life, but how about sharing some key moments here and there that show you are a woman with a job, spouse, extended family, mortgage and yes, a child? What if you could be fully you, integrated you, work and home you, in the office? It’s true that some colleagues may not like it and might

6 Things All Happy Moms Do by Anastasia Gavalas I often get asked how I can be so happy (and sane) while raising five children in today’s world. The answer lies somewhere between surrendering my old ways of trying to over-manage everyone in my family and, the recognition that the only person who can make me happy is… me. This awareness integrates setting an intention to lessen stress in order to make my life easier and insisting on enjoying the adventures of parenthood. I have spent the majority of my life engaged in a curiosity of family dynamics and their outcomes. I am struck by mothers who seem to be happy regardless of the state of the world around them or stage of child rearing they are in. These observations have taught me essential ideas that, when implemented regularly, make raising children easier and this mama much happier. 1. Use intuition. Regardless of what’s happening in the outside world, blasted on the daily news, shared by grandparents and other parents, using your intuition

Children raised in trusting environments make better decisions for themselves and have healthier experiences. Naturally, dynamics within the family are less stressed and individuals are happier. 4. Children need space and time to explore their personal talents which organically helps them build better self-esteem and reach their individual potential. 5. Moms, Get the Big Stuff Right by Dr. Meg Meeker Every mom worries about failing her kids. We wonder what we will do if our kids turn against us, grow up to hate us or end up disliking their lives. These are natural worries, but these fears can drive us crazy. They can also drive us to focus on minor details, hoping that if we can control the small things, the big stuff will fall into place. But, posting the perfect “first day of school” picture on Instagram or making sure that our son gets the right football coach won’t improve our parenting. It will just give us a false sense of control. So, I have a suggestion. Why don’t we forget the multitude of small parenting details and start focusing on getting the big things right. I believe that when we do this, life goes a whole lot better for moms and their kids. Here’s where we can start. Be Kind. I’ve pulled the car over a few times in my life with a backseat full of fighting kids. I know firsthand how hard being nice can be. So I think that it’s important to train ourselves to be nice. Being patient with our kids is crucial to good parenting. Personally, I need some alone time in order to keep myself calm and less irritable. Some moms need to work a little, exercise, pray more or go out with friends periodically. These aren’t selfish things. They are important

Dollars and Sense: Raising Financially Fit Kids

by Kerrie McLoughlin When I was a kid I thought that just because there were checks in my parents’ checkbook, there was plenty of money in the bank. How many kids these days think whipping out a credit card is the way to pay for items – any items – no matter the cost? I don’t want my own kids to be financial freaks, fiscal failures, money misfits. As parents, we have a special opportunity to teach our kids about money … and how they can handle it responsibly so they stay out of debt down the line and know how to save for their future needs and wants. Saving money. The elementary-age crowd is eager to soak up information about money, as they are tiny consumers. Start with a simple piggy bank for very young kids and teach about saving money in the piggy bank until they have saved enough money to buy something special. Much banking is done online these days, but it’s still important to keep up with accounts, and your kids need to know that, also.
