How To Make a Fight With Your Partner Into a Positive Learning Experience for Your Child by Dr. Laura Markham "Dr. Laura.... In your last post (How To Do Damage Control When You Fight In Front of Your Kids), you said that when parents fight in front of their children, it makes the children anxious. But I read that fighting is fine as long as you "make up" afterward and the kids see that."

Dr. Laura Markham is the author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and has worked as a parenting coach with countless parents across the English-speaking world, both in person and via phone. You can find Dr. Laura online at AhaParenting.com, the website of Aha! Moments for parents of kids from birth through the teen years, where she offers a free daily inspiration email to parents.

It sounds like you're referring to the research by Mark Cummings, reported in Po Bronson's book Nurture Shock. Bronson reports that as long as parents "made up" with each other afterwards, the children easily recovered from the incident. BUT as Cummings the researcher stressed, the parents were disagreeing, not yelling in these scripted encounters, so there were no raised voices, insults, or disrespect. By contrast, when parents' fights include yelling or disrespect, it does make children anxious, and in fact previous studies by Cummings have established that such fights, especially when repeated, are damaging to kids. In this more hopeful research, Cummings wanted to find out whether "plain old everyday confl ict" -- just ordinary non-yelling disagreement -- was also a problem. So he scripted encounters in which the parents had a difference of opinion but did not yell at each other. As it turned out, even these disagreements were very upsetting to the children who witnessed them. So yes, even non-yelling disagreements where parents are in confl ict are hard on kids.

Hopefully, this happens before there’s any yelling -- or you’ll be modeling yelling. And hopefully, you can close the interaction with a big, public, hug. If you're too mad, first take some space to calm down and then prioritize the hug in front of your child, with a family mantra like “It’s okay to get mad. You can be mad at someone and still love them at the same time . We always work things out.” This takes maturity, but it models self-regulation and repair. And it's crucial to restoring your child's sense of safety.

PLAY We-Ko-Pa Named after the surrounding mountains in the stunning Sonoran Desert, We-Ko-Pa translates to “the four peaks.” This highly acclaimed golf club is located northeast of Scottsdale, on a site developed by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, and boasts two award-winning, championship courses — Cholla and Saguaro. While both courses offer uniquely different layouts, they both boast sweeping views of mountains, and are surrounded by stunning native desert flora, and fauna such as coyote, rattlesnakes, and roadrunners. The courses boast perfectly maintained greens that are well protected by bunkers, washes and gullies. They are demanding, challenging, and a ton of fun to play. The Cholla course is a breathtaking 7200-yard course, built by noted golf course architect Scott Miller, offering scenery so idyllic that it may distract a player if they're not careful. Offering tees to suite every level of player, this beautifully maintained course ensures that every shot is a pleasure to hit, with fairways that allow for generous landing areas. The Saguaro course is also an award-winner, most notably recognized by Golf Digest, which gave it the 4th spot in its 2020-2021 list of the “Best in State Rankings: Arizona.” Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the Saguaro is an 18hole course less than 7,000 yards. Unlike the more traditional target-style Cholla course, this course was designed for walking, built with greens situated near to the next tee. We-Ko-Pa offers a first class club house with an excellent golf shop staffed by some of the nicest people we have met in golf. The We-Ko-Pa Grille not only offers excellent food and beverage, but also a stunning view of the Sonoran Desert. JUNE 2022 | ACTIVE FAMIL Y 9

Grayhawk Grayhawk Golf Club offers two championship 18-hole public courses, several delicious dining options, and a stylish pro golf shop. Set amongst the stunning Sonoran Desert, the two courses — Raptor and Talon — are two of the top daily fee courses in the Scottsdale area and have played host to the PGA, as well as being the current host of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships. The Tom Fazio-designed Raptor course boasts generous fairways and large greens with sweeping undulation. This par-72 course runs 7,151 yards from the back tees, with greens that are guarded by deep green side bunkers and grass collection areas, providing fun challenge to get up and down. The course is immaculately maintained

[ TRAVEL ] with smooth greens that prevent any wobble or hop. Our favorite hole on the Raptor course is hole 18, which may also be the prettiest hole. Number 18 is a par 5, requiring a carry over a large waste area onto a fairway that has a generous landing area but narrows as you approach the green. The Talon course, designed by U.S. Open and PGA Champion, David Graham, and golf course architect Gary Panks, is also beautiful and fun to play, but may be tighter off the tee than the Raptor course, requiring a player to place their shots. The 6,973-yard layout on this course has greens that are large and tiered, requiring some very challenging putts. The Talon course is also kinder to off line approaches than Raptor, with easier “ups and downs.” Hole number 17 is a memorable one, being a par 3 island green that’s completely surrounded by water, with little to no bail out area. Miss the green on this hole and you have a drowned ball. The tee shot on hole number 17 may be the most fun shot of the day. The golf shop at Grayhawk is a standout, and probably one of the best we have visited. It’s stocked with an impressive and stylish lineup of both men’s and lady’s fashion, the latter of which can be limited in typical golf shops. Grayhawk also boasts two popular and sought-after dining options. Phil’s Grill offers warm, friendly service with delicious, classic cuisine, ice-cold beer and a relaxed, yet upscale atmosphere. Isabella’s boasts a lively setting and a beautiful outdoor patio with a great happy hour. Isabella’s serves delicious salads, sandwiches, pizza, fish, steaks and fresh pastas. Whether you’re an avid golfer or more of a poolside lounger, Scottsdale is a terrific choice for your next getaway. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is a resort you’ll want to return to, again and again.

Our Kids’ Mental Health –the Covid Casualty We Need to Talk About by Dr. Meg Meeker May was Mental Health Awareness month. At Meeker Parenting, we always take this opportunity to seriously discuss the state of mental health and our kids because it’s such a critical part of their overall health and well-being. Sadly it seems that over the years, kids’, especially teens’, mental health has been on the decline. Making matters worse is two years of Covid-induced isolation. I have personally witnessed a rise in anxiety and depression among the Dr. Meeker is a pediatrician, who has practiced pediatric and adolescent medicine for 25 years. patients in my practice over the past two years. The scary part is that I’ve seen it appear in kids who had no problems prior to Covid. Why is Covid affecting our kids’ mental health? There are numerous ways that Covid has negatively affected our kids’ mental health but in my experience, these are the biggest culprits: Social Media During Covid, kids have spent more time on social media, where they see their friends posting happier lives, better friends, and more attractive figures. The longer they look at social media, the more they want to look at it—it’s addicting. And the longer they look at it, the more they feel they are falling short.

Dr. Meeker is co-host and physicianin-residence of Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk Radio. She is also Assistant Clinical Professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and currently teaches medical students and physicians in residency training. She is board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Meeker serves on the National Advisory Board of the Medical Institute. She has been married to her husband, Walter for 32 years. They have shared a medical practice for over 20 years. They have three grown daughters and a grown son. She lives in northern Michigan.

14 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | JUNE 2022

All kids, especially teens, want to feel like they fit in. Social media comparison makes them feel like they don’t, and that they’re not enough. These feelings can lead to anxiety and depression. The more time spent on social media, the more likely a child or teen is to experience depression. Lack of Meaningful Relationships Kids have learned a lot about relationships during Covid. Some good, some bad. They lived with their parents 24/7 for the first time. Most of those parents were adjusting to homeschooling their kids while trying to do their jobs. The stress in these relationships skyrocketed. Some families fought. Others grew to resent each other. And those who didn’t have good family relationships to begin with were reminded of that.

relationships: facial expressions, body language, touch. Without these, connections don’t feel complete. This lack of connection has led to depression in many of our kids. There are many other reasons Covid has caused a mental health crisis among our kids, but these are the most important. I know this because I also saw the other side. Kids who were already spending more time with parents and siblings and less time on screens thrived

Third, let your child know that the past two years have been rough. They have caused otherwise healthy kids to struggle. Then ask your child if she has struggled in any way. If so, ask her how. Then listen. Don’t interrupt or tell her she shouldn’t feel that way. That will make her stop talking.
