15 Ways To Keep Your Child From Developing An Eating Disorder by Dr. Laura Markham In this culture, unfortunately, many of us eat diets that aren't very healthy, and we don't get enough exercise. That's true for our kids, too. In fact, experts Dr. Laura Markham is the author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and has worked as a parenting coach with countless parents across the English-speaking world, both in person and via phone. You can find Dr. Laura online at AhaParenting.com, the website of Aha! Moments for parents of kids from birth through the teen years, where she offers a free daily inspiration email to parents.

suggest that this is the fi rst generation that's less healthy than their parents. Even worse, when you mix our cultural obsession with thinness with emotional immaturity and how disconnected we often are from our own bodies, it's a perfect storm for eating disorders. Guess how many kids growing up in the US today develop some kind of eating disorder? 12.5% of girls and 6% of boys. (See NEDA for stats.) So eating disorders are a serious risk factor for our children. Luckily, parents have a lot more power than they realize to prevent eating disorders, but our intervention works best when it starts early. Intervening in adolescence, when kids need to assert their right to control their own bodies, is more complicated and less effective. What can you do to prevent your child from developing an eating disorder? Help your child develop a healthy body, a healthy emotional life, a healthy attitude toward food and exercise, AND a healthy body image.

which leads to guilt and a whole cycle of disordered behavior around food. So instead of forbidding treats and junk food, teach your child that they can enjoy junk food and treats in moderation for special occasions. That means you don't need to keep junk food in the house, where it's hard to resist. Kids will eat what’s around, and sneak it if they have to. 8. Keep trying to get them to eat their veggies. No self respecting child tries a new food the first time she sees it. But eventually, she’s likely to. That’s why kids who are exposed to more foods are more sophisticated eaters. Studies show that the major predictor in children’s willingness to eat a food is familiarity. 9. Get your child involved in sports. Every child needs a regular physical activity. When girls get involved with sports, they have a healthier attitude toward their bodies for life. When kids find a sport they love when they’re younger, they’re much more likely to stay fit for life. Instead of communicating that we exercise to tame body fat, explain that exercise keeps

Reduce TV use. Children who watch two hours of television each day are much more likely to grow into overweight adults with high cholesterol. It may be that advertising has as much to do with this correlation as inactivity. US obesity specialist David Ludwig says recent research strengthens the case for a ban on food advertising aimed at children: "In an era when childhood obesity has reached crisis proportions, the commercial food industry has no business telling toddlers to consume fast food, soft drinks and high-calorie low-quality snacks -- all products linked to excessive weight gain."

HOTEL SPOTLIGHT: CordeValle –A Luxurious Sanctuary Less Than an Hour’s Drive

by Elizabeth Kang

Just a 20-minute drive outside the crowds and chaos of San Jose lies a hidden gem of luxury and exclusivity — a place where ordinary people transform into royalty, if only for a weekend. CordeValle is a breathtaking 5-star luxury golf resort, tucked just outside the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, in San Martin, California. This 1,700-acre sanctuary offers serenity, luxury and world-class hospitality, under an hour’s drive from the Bay Area.

SEAMLESS SERVICE Once you arrive at the gated entrance of CordeValle, it becomes immediately clear that you’re entering someplace special — the type of place where, upon first arrival, the security guard at the entrance already knows your name, and on your second night, your dinner server expertly remembers your child’s preference for extra cherries in their Shirley Temple. The gracious hospitality and seamless service is one of the standouts at CordeValle, and every encounter with staff is warm, professional and friendly.

FAMILY FRIENDLY That top-notch service extends to CordeValle’s warm welcoming of families with children, too, who are greeted on arrival with a fun scavenger hunt of the property’s various wildlife, including deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, and cow. Once children find all the animals on their list, they're rewarded at the front desk with a fun craft prize. Children’s amenities such as cribs, diaper pails, baby monitors, and in-room-baby-proofing services are available on request. Little ones get the royal treatment at mealtime too, with kid-friendly favorites such as pancakes for breakfast, and pasta, chicken tenders or gourmet hot dogs offered at lunch or dinner. After dinner, families may enjoy making s’mores around the property’s grand, wood-burning fireplace, armed with gourmet s’mores kits which include everything needed to make a delicious s’mores, and then some. There may be no giant waterslides or bouncy houses to be seen, but kids have plenty of diversions to choose from at CordeValle, from swimming in the heated saltwater pool, to tennis and golf lessons, archery, and family bocce ball. Kids can borrow pool toys and sunscreen from the spa before heading to the pool, and they’re also welcome to accompany their parents on CordeValle’s world-class golf course. DELIGHTFUL DINING You can also spot wildlife from both outdoor patios of the resort’s two excellent restaurants; One Iron Bar and Lion’s Peak Grill. Fun-in-the-Sun Safety by Sandra Aris Summertime means school is out and kids are home. Long days of swimming, trips to the park and playing outside with friends is exciting for kids, but the hot temperatures, risk of dehydration and other safety risks also means they have a higher potential to get hurt during their break from school. But instead of parents keeping kids holed up inside, they can take a few extra precautions to ensure they’re safe. KEEP THEM HYDRATED With smaller bodies, kids become dehydrated and overheat more quickly. When temperatures heat up and the sun is blazing, it’s important to always have water on hand – not just for yourself but also your kids. “TEE TIME” AT SILVERADO RESORT & SPA

by Elizabeth Kang and David Flowers

S

ilverado Resort and Spa is a longstanding favorite in Napa, known not only for its proximity to world-class wine, but also for its fabulous “tee,” too. We’re talking golfing, of course, and there’s no better course to tee-off on in the Napa Valley than at this beautiful “stay and play” resort. Here, wine and “tee” go perfectly together — golfers experience the best of both worlds: PGA championship golf, in close proximity to some of the world’s best wineries. With two championship courses, comfortable accommodations, delicious onsite dining, tennis, swimming and an award-winning spa, Silverado Resort is a definite hole-in-one. THE COURSES Silverado Resort offers two distinctive 18-hole, quality championship golf courses. A 7,166-yard North Course and a 6,612-yard South Course were both redesigned in 2010 by PGA Hall-of-Famer Johnny Miller. Both of these expertly maintained courses currently host or have hosted PGA tours and championships, with the North Course playing host every September to the PGA Tour Safeway Championship, and the South Course having hosted the PGA Champions Transamerica Tournament from 1989 through 2002. The Fortinet Championship PGA TOUR golf tournament is also slated to be hosted at Silverado in September of 2022. Head Golf Professional Dave Zorn proudly points out that Silverado Resort works diligently to ensure that their courses are ready to play at tournament level year-round, so whether you play in summer or winter, conditions are always top-notch. Golfers here enjoy use

of five different tee box options, so players of all skill levels can enjoy playing. There is also a full-length turf driving range, a large practice chipping green, a large practice putting green, and a private practice area. In addition to golf carts, push carts are available to those who wish to get their steps in. Since their 2010 redesign, both courses continue to benefit from expert maintenance, careful grooming and thoughtful consideration, including minimizing Kikuya grass to allow Rye and Kentucky grasses to thrive, allowing for better turf conditions, and reshaped, revamped bunkers benefitting with the addition of brilliant white sand. Elevation changes and water crossings add exciting challenges to the game, and Oak-lined fairways, as well as surrounding rolling hills add to the natural beauty of the courses. OUR FAVORITE HOLE Although every hole on the course is well-designed and memorable, Hole #9 on the south course is the signature hole and the most fun to play. It is a Par 5, 462-yard hole, and tees off from an elevated tee well above the landing area. Head Golf Professional Dave Zorn agrees that Hole #9 is a favorite among Silverado players. “A good tee shot in the fairway gives the player an option to lay up or to try and reach the guarded green in two,” he said. Zorn warns that although fun, the hole does present some exciting challenges. “Beware of the water left of the green and a bunker right with the green that runs towards the water. Two great shots leave the player with an eagle putt or a chipped a putt for a nice birdie.” MAY 2022 | ACTIVE FAMIL Y 21

[ TRAVEL ] Zorn says that a delicious reward awaits players upon completion of hole #9. “After a fun hole is the worldfamous Burger Dog Snack Shack.” (The Burgerdog is legendary in Napa Valley and beyond, featuring a hotdog-length hamburger served in a hot dog bun, with all the delicious trimmings.)

THE MOST CHALLENGING HOLES Although both south and north courses at Silverado are fun and playable for all skill levels, there are two holes that are considered very challenging to play, even by the most seasoned players. On the north course, the short par 4 8th hole is considered the most challenging hole, and on the south course, the par 4 6th hole is considered the most challenging to play, according to Zorn. He said of the 8th hole, “Any shot that ends up a short runs the risk of rolling all the way down the hill for a tough up-hill 30-40 yard wedge shot. A good shot on the green sets yourself up for a tough putt. Par is a great score on this hole.” Describing the challenges of the south course 6th hole, Zorn said, “What makes this hole challenging is the second shot downhill to an elevated green. All short shots will run all the down the hill next to a plethora of divots from previous victims to coming up short and having a tough pitch shot back up the hill 20-30 yards. Escaping with a par on this hole feels like a birdie.” DELECTABLE DINING In addition to pastries and coffee from The Silverado Market & Bakery, wood-fired pizza from Forno, and their famous Burgerdogs, golfers have the option for a more refined dining experience at The Grill. Offering farm-to-table, seasonal cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Grill offers diners a casual, yet upscale dining experience with both indoor and heated outdoor seating, and a variety of fresh, Californiainspired dishes to choose from. Choose from classic Eggs Benedict, avocado toast or smoked salmon potato waffle, among other delicious options, for breakfast. The lunch menu offerings include a crab louie salad, Rueben Sandwich and shrimp tacos, and dinner selections include a seasonal risotto, duck confit, and butterseared Petrale Sole. As expected in the heart of wine country, the restaurant features an excellent wine list, as well as craft cocktails and beer. The Grill also offers a Happy Hour menu, children's menus, and a decadent 22 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | MAY 2022

allows juniors to golf at no cost with a paying adult, after 3 pm. There are also spring and summer golf, tennis and swim camps that emphasize the fun of the sport, as well as developing the skills and discipline needed to excel in golf and other activities. Susan Stiffelman, Huffington Post Parent’s weekly advice columnist (“Parent Coach”), is an engaging speaker whose presentations leave audiences upbeat, entertained and fortified with practical strategies that will make an immediate and significant difference in their day to day lives. Susan is a licensed Marriage, Family and Child therapist, a credentialed teacher, and a highly regarded parenting coach. Instead of offering standard, scripted advice to parents about how to control their children, Susan focuses on helping them be what she calls the Captain of the ship their children need and naturally want to cooperate with, confide in, and respect. Those who attend Susan’s presentations routinely email her office with thanks, and a request to come back again!

Help! I Yell All Day Long! by Susan Stiffelman, MFT

I have 2 kids — 6 1/2 and 5 years old. My husband works long hours and I am alone with them most of the time. It seems like all I do is scream and yell, because my stress level is so high. Money is short and I’m tired all the time. When something breaks down — yesterday it was the dishwasher — I fall apart in front of my kids. Now my children are hitting and having lots of meltdowns. What should I do to get a handle on things?

One of the most challenging things about being a parent is the fact that our children are always watching us, taking their cues about how to handle life’s ups and downs from what they see us doing. Whether we’re gripping the steering wheel at a red light because we’re late for an appointment, or shouting at someone who took the parking space we had our eye on, their

enough. Aiming for constant perfection creates ongoing stress. If you’re too tired to clean your house before your relatives come for dinner, allow your best to be good enough.

• Get enough sleep. One of the best ways to boost your ability to cope with stress is to get more rest. The average person needs 7 to 8 hours a night to recharge. When we shortchange ourselves on sleep, we can experience problems with mood regulation, focus, memory, illness and (of course) stress. If you need to take an afternoon nap with your toddler instead of tackling the dirty dishes, take

• Get support. For most parents, the tasks involved with raising children are endless; they keep us running from morning to night. If you’re exhausted or need a break, ask for help. Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Newbery Award for Literary Excellence! by Jeanne Huybrechts, Stratford School Children’s book publishing is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise that brings several thousand new titles – from read-aloud picture books to young-adult literature – to market every year. Many of the annual offerings are good, some are better, but only a few are best. When it comes to children’s literature, annual “10 best” lists abound. The New York Times has one; so does Common Sense Media; and, of course, I have my own favorites. Honoring the 100th anniversary of the gold-standard award for children’s literature, the Newbery Medal, which the American Library Association (ALA) has presented to the authors of “the most distinguished contributions to American literature for children” since 1922. The Newbery and the Caldecott (honoring children’s picture books) prizes are widely considered the most prestigious awards for children’s literature in the United States. Selecting my favorites from among the many outstanding Newberys and Caldecotts was tough, yet I focused on having at least one selection for each age group and included those that I find truly inventive, transcendent, or utterly hilarious – the books I never tire of reading or reading aloud to children. PRESCHOOL Sam and Dave Dig a Hole Written by Mac Barnett, and Illustrated by Jon Klassen Sam and Dave is my desert island book - if I was stranded on a deserted island, and could only bring one picture book, it would be this one. After reading it aloud over 50 times, it still makes me laugh, and I will never tire of the joy it brings to students of all ages. Sam and Dave are young boys out in the backyard with their dog, a canteen, and a few shovels, looking for “something spectacular.” They find an adventure for themselves, and how they do that is magical. Perhaps the moral of this story is that a spectacular day for a couple of kids is all about digging in the dirt, getting muddy, and stopping to smell the tulips… or are they daisies? Read this masterpiece with your children and find out. Last Stop on Market Street written by Matt de la Pena, Illustrated by Christian Robinson The fi rst and only picture book to be awarded the Newbery Medal, this is a remarkable story of a young boy named CJ and his wise grandmother spending an afternoon together in a city. CJ asks the questions our own children ask all the time, and Nana's answers are ones that we should 28 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | MAY 2022
