13 Tips to Help Children Manage Social Anxiety by Dr. Laura Markham Dr. Laura Markham is the author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and has worked as a parenting coach with countless parents across the English-speaking world, both in person and via phone. You can find Dr. Laura online at AhaParenting.com, the website of Aha! Moments for parents of kids from birth through the teen years, where she offers a free daily inspiration email to parents.

“Probably the worst thing to do is to say, ‘Don’t be shy. Don’t be quiet.' This is not about trying to change the child’s temperament. It’s about respecting and honoring temperament and variation, and helping children navigate the world with their own instruments." - Dr. K.R. Merikangas Parents often ask me how to help children who are "shy." But what does "shy" even mean? Some children who are considered "shy" are highly sensitive, meaning very aware of and strongly affected by their environment. Others are introverted, meaning that they need time away from other people to renew their energy. Some children are so absorbed in their own projects and ideas that they're simply less interested in social interaction. Some feel more anxious when their "attachment people" aren't there as backup. And the rest of us who think we're "shy" usually mean that we feel awkward

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE by Elizabeth Kang Safari West brings the African Serengeti to wine country, and it’s the next best thing to a real-life African safari. For over 25 years, guests have been visiting this 400-acre reserve, located in the rolling hills of Sonoma County in Santa Rosa, California, to get up-close and personal with over 90 species of exotic animals and birds, and spend the night under the stars in authentic safari-style canvas tents. The experience is unlike anything else in the area, and should not be missed. This wildlife haven was nearly burnt to the ground during the 2017 Tubbs fire that ravaged the area. While Safari West owners Peter and Nancy Lang lost their home in the fire, Peter managed to save Safari West from devastation by remaining behind after evacuations and protecting the animals and property with water hoses. Today, their love and dedication to the property and animals is illuminated in every detail, from the well-kept animal habitats to the meticulously decorated safari tents and delightful family style bbq dinners. Experience the Sonoma Serengeti The main attraction at Safari West is their 2.5-to-threehour interactive safari tour, with a large portion of the tour taking place on a rugged, open-air jeep, and partly on foot. While on the jeep, which holds about 12 people, riders get to see a variety of exotic animals such as zebra, giraffe, buffalo and antelope, sometimes coming as close as four feet away. The latter part of the guided tour leads guests on foot through exotic birds habitats, and small animal sanctuaries, where guests can see and learn about monkeys, fox’s, cheetahs, red pandas, and much more. After the tour, guests can stay for lunch or dinner, and shop in the expansive gift shop, where keepsakes such as rare stones, plush animals featured on the safari, and handmade, artisan crafts can be purchased. There are four safari times to choose from, with safaris departing at 9 am, 10 am, 1 pm or 2 pm. Dine on Backyard BBQ Lunch or dinner at Safari West is a fun experience where guests sit outdoors and get to know one-another over

a delicious family style BBQ. Before covid, this meal was served family style, but under current conditions — for safety and sanitary reasons — a server now brings out plated meals. Guests can still choose to eat as much as they want from the menu, which consists of delicious bbq chicken and/or ribs, along with mac n cheese, roasted potatoes and vegetables along with dessert. Guests who stay overnight are treated to a complimentary continental breakfast of pastries, porridge, yogurt, eggs, bagels, cereal, juice and coffee. Fall Asleep to Flamingo Lullabies While a day trip to Safari West is definitely fun and doable, a big part of the magic and experience is sleeping overnight in the delightful safari-themed canvas tents, which are fully outfitted for an ultra-comfortable stay. These stand-alone tents are plenty big for a family or couple, and feature double or single beds, bathrooms with showers, and a big front porch with seating for four. Enjoying a cup of coffee on the front porch to a symphony of exotic birds calls makes for a memorable morning, and it isn't hard to imagine you’re in Africa when you spy a giraffe walking by in the distance from your porch view. Guests are welcome to wander the main grounds during their stay, and observe the animals at their leisure. Insider Tips: *Kids must be at least four-years-old to ride on the safari and they must be about 45 inches or taller to ride on the very top seat of the safari jeep, where they're treated to a bird’s eye view of the wildlife. (In our experience, the top seat was definitely the way to go— so much fun!) *If you’re a light sleeper, try to request a tent farther away from the flamingo habitat. These, and other birds, are extremely chatty and can be noisy well after dark, and during the early morning. *During warmer months in the summer and early fall, be sure to book a morning safari for a more comfortable ride. 5 Science-Backed Reasons To Let Your Hair Down & Play by Emma Seppälä Ph.D. Submerged in the responsibilities of life, the seriousness of world affairs, and an ever-growing to-do list, we often forget to PLAY. Animals, on the other hand, continue to play throughout their adult lives! We may believe that play is somehow no longer appropriate or cast it aside as a frivolous waste of time. Research suggests, however, that play is essential to our well-being, creativity, and health. 1. It Boosts Our Creativity Mark Beeman, Ph.D., at Northwestern University found that people have an easier time solving a puzzle after watching a short comedy clip. Having fun, perhaps by easing tension, may be facilitating neuronal connections helpful for greater mental flexibility and creativity. In another brain imaging study, Dr. Beeman found that activation of pleasure centers in the brain predicted successful puzzle-solving. These findings suggesting that well-being helps us think more creatively and could potentially help us resolve challenging situations.

3. It Improves Our Health Laughter is a natural outcome of play. Preliminary studies suggest that, in addition to being enjoyable and relieving feelings of stress and tension, laughter can also improve physical health. It has been linked to decreased stress and inflammation in the body and may improve vascular health.

5. It Connects Us As I described in my previous post, social connectedness is a fundamental need for human beings. On January 1st 1915, during World War I, a soldier in the in the front line sent home a famous letter that was first published in the London Times. It described the events of the truce on Christmas Day: ‘The English brought a soccer ball from the trenches, and pretty soon a lively game ensued. How marvelously wonderful, yet how strange it was. The English officers felt the same way about it. Thus Christmas, the celebration of love, managed to bring mortal enemies together as friends for a time.’

Pumpkin Science Experiment Classics and More! by Stratford Schools It’s Fall and that means it’s pumpkin season! That time of year when we are surrounded by all things pumpkin. We eat them, drink them, carve them, and decorate with them. Many of us look forward to the abundance of pumpkin spiced options -- employing those lattes, cookies, breads, pie, and delicious smelling candles to help us get into that cozy feeling of the season. Yet there truly is more to a pumpkin than meets the pie. At Stratford our young students are immersed in engaging science experiments centered all around pumpkins because pumpkins just so happen to be the perfect vegetable to get children excited about the wonders of science and nature. So this year, go out and get your happiness-inducing pumpkins and whimsical looking gourds, and prepare to explore the fascinating science of a pumpkin with your child. Shopping for Pumpkins We all love to look for the “perfect” pumpkin whether that means round and robust, tall and cylindrical, or the one that has a personality all its own. Take your child with you to the pumpkin patch or the store to pick out their favorite pumpkins and gourds. If you have options, select a colorful variety of shapes and sizes. Get a big one, a little one, and liven it up with some gourds of varying colors and textures. Exploring Your Pumpkins Once you get your pumpkin haul home, lay out your pumpkins on a table and have your child get out their lab coat (an old t-shirt or apron will do), measuring tape, and magnifying glass. It’s time to start our science exploration. Starting with a standard looking pumpkin, let’s talk about the differences that we can see on the outside fi rst. • What does the pumpkin look and feel like? • How would your child describe the texture of the shell of their pumpkin? Is it bumpy or is it smooth? • Encourage your child to use their senses and write down all of the things they can see, hear, feel, and smell. • Shake up the pumpkin. Does it make a sound? 24 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | NOVEMBER 2021
