EDITOR’S NOTE:
Hey there!
Thank you for picking up Building 22’s Edition 21 publication! Like previous Building 22 publications that have been designed by our student editorial team, this year’s publication has its own special and unique features!
This publication showcases works from the 2020-2021 academic year – the first ever year that was fully taught online. Despite the many challenges that we all faced as a school community, whether it be working from our @-home-studio (see next page for various @-homestudios), navigating through a crit on zoom, or meeting our classmates for the first time online, we finished and completed a wild school year, and the tremendous effort made is worth celebrating! Edition 21 captures and displays some of the many excellent works that were created by the students during the pandemic and showcases how the school spirit rose above the chaos.
We wish to give an immense shout-out to the students for all that they did; without your creativity, drive, and talent, Building 22 would not be possible. Thank you for sharing your works with Building 22 and for allowing us to showcase the endless creative talents that you hold. This one is for you!
As you flip through this collection of works, we hope you find these projects inspiring and nostalgic!
Enjoy :-)

ARCS 1005 CEILINGS AND DREAMS DARION DILLABAUGH
This project is based on the notion of ‘Labyrinth’ as a space that blurs the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, through the manipulation and the illusion of physical and imaginary lines.
A model establishes visual manipulations using 111 wooden lines of varying dimensions, geometries, and degrees of thickness and colour.
A conte illustration further explores the idea of illusions by blending the likenesses of the object’s forms and its shadows.

GALLIVANT - ing
INFORMAL : TO TRAVEL, ROAM, OR MOVE ABOUT FOR PLEASURE
This project, titled “GALLIVANT-ing,” is perhaps the closest I can get to a physical manifestation of my mindscape. Twisting and weaving amongst themselves, thoughts and whims combine to form my interpretation of a dreamhouse: a space for dreaming and exploration. Here, it is space to roam and wander, a museum of thought frozen in time. What is the mind if not a freeway junction of one’s inner workings? GALLIVANT-ing looks at the journey of an idea, and the space created by its footprints. It is a documentation of my own personal thought process, in all its jumbled, messy, non-linear glory.
One can notice moments of backtrack, overlap, and connection, all representative of the natural thought process. There is no beginning and end in this dreamhouse.
Rather, the paths disperse in the same way they came together, just as a thought comes and goes. Mapping the route of something that lacks physical quality proved to be a natural process for this project, with it almost creating itself with my body as its medium. Woven together using rattan from used wicker baskets, its materiality exhibits the same characteristics created by its form. It is not just a place, but a living, breathing, environment, ever-expanding in space and time.

INSTRUCTOR: ERIC ARCHAMBAULT + SUZANNE HARRIS-BRANDTS + CONNOR O’GRADY
Framed around two medium scale public building projects, students build upon an understanding of material and tectonic composition, spatial qualities, and the relationship between a building and its context. Questioning what we have in common in a time where everything seems isolated and fragmented, students are tasked to build meaningful spaces for the individual and the community. Similar to an exploration of how our perception can generate a network of relationships, architecture is utilized to cultivate relationships and allow users to “encounter” one another through public buildings where individuals come together

JOHANNESBURG CAPSULE CITIES
One District. Worlds Apart
ARIK ABRAHAM + DULAT SARGASKAYEV
...The year is 2222. Elon Musk has unlocked the key to human immortality.
Through his various start-ups he has colonized Mars for about 200 years. Now, he has returned to his native South Africa. In District 2 of Johannesburg, Musk has turned former gold and diamond mines into an underground city for the rich. Connected by hyperloops and his other sci-fi inventions, he has made the underground city (U.C.) attractive to the wealthy…
One upper and one underground topography illustrate the envisioned Johannesburg city. Different topographies showcase two completely different worlds, as the upper side is populated by the poor people, and the bottom side by the rich. One can notice densely packed dwelling and capsule housing living conditions of the poor, compared to the futuristic and advanced capsules of the rich. A comic book was made to tell the narrative and create the futuristic city of Johannesburg.

tempo Nightclub and Venue
Tim Schmidt
This project proposes a contemporary solution to rejuvenate the function of the Southminster Church: a night club. Located on Bank Street in Old Ottawa South, the church is in a neighborhood full of students and nightlife seekers who currently need to travel to the distant Byward Market for a night on the town. The club provides a local option that celebrates the existing architecture while reinventing the identity of the church into a new secular reality. A simple addition is proposed that relies on the minimal removal of heritage features. The massing is informed by existing spatial elements, instead expressing itself through its color, materiality, and organic shape. Two openings are added, a general entrance which faces Bank Street to retain the privacy of the residential context, and a large outlook that engages with the canal and the skyline of Lansdowne Avenue

BAUHAUS CAMPUS 2021
A Space For Sustainable Renaissance
BENNET HARVEY
The failure of modernism alongside the supersession of art and unity with that of art and commerce are directly related to many major issues seen on the world stage.
The current state of consumer culture is unsustainable, the depletion of natural resources and the pollution of the Earth exist as effects of this societal mindset
In a period of just 13 years, it is estimated that the number of people in the consumer class will increase by over 2 billion people. In this regard, it becomes important to educate the designers of the future in ways of sustainable design and living. Through the
implementation of a school, focused on sustainability and a move away from needless consumption, the overall question of how the state of consumer culture is beneficial or detrimental will be addressed.
The placement of the proposed Bauhaus Campus project in the south-west corner of the site allows for a landscape to be built in the remaining area and situate the project in a “park”, marking a disconnect between the city and the project. Furthermore, the implementation of a greenhouse to the given program allows for teachings into sustainable farming and for a community garden and farmers market to be hosted in the shared space between the classes and exhibitions. Select dorms are then inserted into the fabricated landscape for students or teachers in conversation with the greenhouse. The insertion of the project into this human-made landscape again reinstates the idea that nature is not human-centric and offers students a unique atmosphere for sustainable teaching.

STOIC EPHEMERAL BUILDING AS URBAN FOREST FOR A VIABLE CANADIAN NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION
DANIEL DICKSON
How can a greenhouse be maintained in a climate increasingly prone to cold snaps and heat waves, adjacent to a frantic urban street in a fragile riparian landscape?
The project sought an answer from the beginning that departs from economic development models (take-makeuse-throw away) to focus on a circular economy, repurposing, and suspending the construction investment in
a loop. An early decision was made to limit concrete and steel use, which is energy and carbon-intensive, directing construction instead to large quantities of mass timber, extensive sitework, and environmental improvements. These costs are then mitigated at the level of detailing, where resources chosen and spaces enclosed are ‘built for change’, with modularity, durability, and adaptability in mind. The initial costs are far outweighed by the prolonged building and material lifespan, and a highly specific design integration with the site. Furthermore, the building strives to be energy positive through heat generation and recirculation from the greenhouses, storage, and heat release via integral Trombe walls, and stackeffect natural ventilation. Additional passive principles are employed, like photovoltaics, a responsible glazing ratio and continuous airtight, highly insulated envelope.

THE ARCHITECTURAL CHUCK BOX
JOEL TREMBLAY
The thesis investigates the way we live and travel overland in rural Canada. It explores the typology of the ‘camp’ combined with the mobility of a trailer as a source for surveying temporary, outdoor dwelling, and the activities this mode of building supports. Recorded throughout the thesis is the design and construction of my own off-grid overland trailer titled the Chuck Box. The work was completed using various tools and techniques which has been documented and presented on YouTube. The study focuses on outdoor activities with an emphasis on self-resiliency, connection to nature, and light-touch-down architectures to be respectful in the Canadian wilderness.
The Chuck Box aims to bridge the valuable experiences of roughingit in the back country with some of the modern-day comforts people have grown accustomed to even when living outdoors.
The Chuck Box is an Off-Road Overland Cargo Camper Conversion, Mobile Office, Portable Ice Hut, Off Grid Hunt Camp, and much more!

EMBRACING THE AIR
THE SENSORY EXPERIENCE OF HEMP-LIME ARCHITECTURE
ROBIN PAPP
This research explores the multisensory properties of hemp-lime construction as an antidote to the overly visual experience of contemporary architecture.
The project begins design from the material and elaborates on the senses involved with the dynamics of hemp walls: the airy trio of humidity, thermal, and sound. By dissolving the complexity of a conventional wall, where the layers act separately, it is compared to a hemp-lime composition which acts in unison. Throughout, the research strives to be environmentally responsible with methods of construction that consider the life cycle of the material; from the conception of a carbon-negative product to the built experience, and to its afterlife of being recycled or fully decomposed. Alongside the historical significance of hemp and lime, the project works at crafting a space of reverence, located in the sacred site of St Raphael’s Cemetery (Ontario), that cleanses the occupant’s senses through materiality.
