BEFORE THE BIG DAY REAL ADVICE What advice would you give to brides who have just gotten engaged?
“
Michelle Kooima | Terrace View Bride
PHOTO: Studio W Photography
You’ve recently gotten engaged (congrats by the way) and the craziness is about to start. Many decisions are headed your way which might seem pretty overwhelming right now. Just remember when you’re looking back on your wedding 10, 20, or even 30 years from now, what do you want to remember the most? Stay true to yourself and what you like, you won’t be disappointed in the end!
”
Make your day special. This seems like obvious advice but most women spend their lives imagining their wedding day. Make sure everything you plan is special to you in one way or another. Don’t settle on something that “just looks nice” or you think everyone else will like. Your wedding day is about you and your husband and your entire wedding should reflect that. The best parts of our wedding were the ones that were meaningful to us. They are also the memories we will remember the most as we grow old together

Remember to check your contract! Some vendors will include an optional gratuity or simply add a tip to your bill. If you are paying a tip in your contract, do not feel as though you need to additionally tip unless you desire to. Plan your tipping ahead of time. Compile envelopes labeled for each individual vendor and allot a tipping amount before the wedding day begins. Put these envelopes in the care of either your event planner or the best man and they can distribute the envelopes to the proper vendor. This leaves the tipping taken care of and out of the minds of the couple! Remember: a grateful spirit and a genuine thank you note go a long way, too! SOURCRES: Theknot.com, GonnaGetWed.com

Planning a wedding can be both stressful and expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! Here is a list of who traditionally pays for what in a wedding. This is a great place to start when opening the budget for conversation! “Don’t let the stress of planning take away from your excitement or create tension about the expenses. Keep dialogue open between all parties involved in the process to avoid confusion and unnecessary ‘budget fights.’ Finally, and most importantly, remember the big picture - you are getting married! BEAUTY, HEALTH, & RECREATION Just how important is your wedding hairstyle? Your wedding hairdo can make or break a stunning bridal look, and it is important to have the right advice when choosing a bridal hairstyle. Here are 5 tips for selecting your wedding look with advice from the stylists at The Hair Clinic!
if you are getting married in an outdoor location, it may not be ideal to wear your hair down or expect it to hold curl depending on the day’s forecast. Bring a few styles you like to your next hair appointment and get your stylist’s advice on the best hairstyle for your day.
1. CHOOSE YOUR DRESS FIRST: Your dress and its neckline are the deciding factor for everything else around it: the hair, the accessories, the flowers, everything. Don’t try to determine your wedding hairstyle based on your favorite magazine updo or something you found on Pinterest. First find a dress that makes you feel like a princess; then let your stylist tailor a style to compliment the dress.
4. BOOK A TRIAL: It’s a good idea to choose a stylist who is a wedding specialist, but they still can’t read your mind and know which bridal hairstyles you will like. One of the most difficult challenges for a stylist can be when you don’t love your look but don’t have the confidence to tell the stylist. You will not hurt their feelings, in fact most stylists love blunt honesty. That is how they can make sure their guests are happy and confident with their look. By the end of your trial, your stylist should understand the look you want for your wedding day.
2. ACCESSORIZE: Your hair accessories can dramatically change your hairstyle. Factor in your headpiece or other accessories before deciding your bridal hairstyle. Adding any headpiece to a hairstyle can dramatically change what your stylist envisions when doing your hair. Coordinating your hairstyle and accessories will transform your wedding look from ordinary to extraordinary. 3. BE REALISTIC: You may have a vision of your wedding day hair that would require your stylist to be Superwoman. Accept that there may be limitations with the texture or length of your hair that limits your hairstyle options. Similarly,
5. BE YOU: Don’t force an over-the-top style that no one has seen before just because you saw it in a magazine or on Pinterest. Your guests came to celebrate YOU. When your hair is styled in a way that enhances your natural beauty, you will feel more confident and enjoy looking back on your day.

Every bride wants to look her best the day of her wedding! Whether you plan a high or low-maintenance beauty routine, let this timeline be your guide to scheduling and making final beauty decisions. 6+ months before – Start your exercise routine and make desired diet changes. Begin taking vitamins for healthy skin, nails and hair. Schedule your wedding date with you hair stylist and makeup artist. 4 months before – Begin searching for your ideal wedding hair and makeup style. Start hair and make-up trial runs. Test skin care products you plan on using for the wedding. 1-2 months before –Begin testing tanning options. Start teeth whitening regimen. Buy necessary beauty items for the big day.
5 days – Wax any unwanted hair; pack your wedding beauty kit. 2-3 day before – Condition your hair. Enjoy a relaxing massage. Receive a manicure and pedicure. Go in for a spray tan. 1 day – Get enough beauty rest and stay hydrated. The most important beauty tip: Smile and enjoy the day! Remember to savor all the good things that happen during the day, because before you know it you will blink and it will be over! MICHAELA DENLINGER, TERRACE VIEW EVENT CENTER

FORMAL WEAR Finding your bridal gown can be one of the most exciting events during the wedding planning process. It is often filled with smiles and lasting memories. However, for some brides the task can be overwhelming or a bit confusing. Whether you plan on this being the best day of your life or a stressful occasion, we have some surefire ideas to help you prepare for your first appointment and make the day a success! Determine your price range and consider the cost of accessories. This includes the veil, jewelry, shoes and proper undergarments. It is wise to only try on dresses within your price range. Falling in love with a dress that is not in the budget can be devastating for some brides. Determine the style of your wedding. For example, if it is an elegant affair you may choose a formal ball gown style or if it is a beach wedding you may want something lighter and more free-flowing.
Become familiar with the different shades of white. There are multiple options of white and ivory when it comes to dresses. If you think you will have a preference on shade, it is a good idea to do your research beforehand so you can have a precise opinion to share with the sales attendant. Decide your entourage. It is good to keep it small, as too many opinions can be overwhelming. Pick people who will give you sound advice and whose opinions you trust, and when it comes down to it trust your instincts in choosing the dress you love the most. Plan on starting the search right away. We recommend going 8-10 months before the wedding date if possible. Some dresses may take over 6 months to order. You will be glad to give yourself time to decide.
FORMAL WEAR | PAGE 25
Once you have taken these steps there are a few things you will need to do to actually find the dress of your dreams. Call the bridal boutique to book an appointment time. We recommend not going during the weekend as it can be the busiest time for bridal stores. It may be worth it to choose a weekday where you may receive more personalized service and attention. Before the appointment, make sure you are ready to try on dresses by wearing the appropriate undergarments and taking along any accessories you plan to wear on your big day. Keep an open mind. All too often brides become disappointed when a dress they saw in a photo doesn’t look the same when they try it on as what the model in the photo looked like. By allowing yourself to try on dresses you would never have imagined you would like, you become open to finding a
PAGE 26 | FORMAL WEAR
style that looks even better than you could have dreamed. Trust your consultant. A professional bridal consultant will have a keen eye for what shape and style you might like best all while keeping you within your budget. While ultimately the decision of what to wear falls on you, don’t let yourself dismiss dresses they offer purely because they aren’t what you had in your mind. You may be missing out on the dress of your dreams. Most importantly, remember to relax and have fun! It is your time to shine and when the big day comes you and your dress will be stunning! ELLI + IAN “It is really hard for me to pick a ‘favorite’ moment from my wedding day- all of them were my favorite! If I had to pin-point it down to a couple things I would say the first look with my dad and Ian are both something I will never forget. With my dad, it was caught on film by my videographer. I am such a ‘daddy’s girl’ so sharing that special moment with him is a memory I will never forget. With Ian, we had a private first look, so no cameras. It was very personal just between him and I- something I definitely recommend! Another favorite moment from the day would be getting ready at the salon with my bridesmaids, personal attendants, my mom, mother-inlaw, cousins, aunts, and grandmas! We had a little ‘party’ all together at the salon, it was a blast! If I could recommend one word of advice it would be to not wish away your engagement! Enjoy every minute of it because it comes and goes so incredibly fast, and on the day of, soak in every minute because it truly is the best day ever!” -Elli Taylor, Terrace View Bride
“My experience with Terrace View was great! They were very helpful and were willing to accommodate to the visions I had set for my wedding day. When the day came I had no worries because the Terrace View staff was so on top of everything throughout the planning process, I knew they would be ready to go the day of- and they were!” -Elli

“JE Photography was awesome! Your wedding day is one of the best days of your life so it is important that the pictures really capture not only the moments, but also the emotions that come with it, and Jordan exceeded my expectations when it came to that! She truly has a gift with what she does and I could not of been more happy with how every picture turned out! Not only does she do a great job, she is an absolute blast to work with! She has an upbeat, personable, kind, and patient personality so it was very easy (and a ton of fun) to work with her! -Elli

GOOD EATS & BEVERAGES When friends and family look back on a wedding day, certain things come back to their minds. Maybe there was an embarrassing speech by the Bride’s uncle, or a famous choreographed first dance. If executed well, the food is surely not to be forgotten. Make sure your menu is something your guests will rave about for years to come with a few of these helpful hints: Don’t Leave Your Guests Hungry - Each of your guests will be spending about half of their day with you, if not more. Never leave guests without food for more than three hours (maximum). For the best response feed them as soon as you arrive at the reception. This is also the key to avoid dreaded drunkenness amongst your wedding guests. Vary courses - For example, if you are having seafood as a starter, avoid it as a main course. Not only will this satisfy the pickiest of eaters, but it can distinguish your appetizers from your meal, and so on. Keep your wedding day schedule in mind - If you and your wedding guests are planning on dancing into the early hours at your wedding reception, then it is always a good idea to bring out extra food towards the end of the evening. Or if you are having an evening ceremony, keep in mind that eating a three course meal late at night might not be suitable. Aim for continuity - Try to reflect the mood of your day in your choice of food to give a sense of continuity. If you are planning a relaxed barn wedding, then a build-a-burger bar followed by an assortment of delicious pies would go over wonderfully. Sushi might not tie in so nicely.
Consider the season - Your guests’ appetites may be drastically different from the warm summer months to the bitter cold winter months. For example, in colder months, salads and fish dishes may not be what your guests crave, whilst a roast dinner or casserole in sunny weather won’t go down well either. In addition, guests are more likely to eat larger amounts in colder weather than they would in warmer months. Think about quantity - An intimate wedding may allow you to opt for dishes which are more expensive, such as individual fillet steaks. On the other hand, a large wedding might require food that is easily prepared on a large scale, such as chilli or pasta dishes. This is where your budget becomes a real factor. Consider not only what you can afford but what is practical, then allow you caterer to customize a menu to not only your tastes but your budget as well. Reflect yourselves in the food - Your wedding day should be all about the happy couple – from the choice of bridesmaids’ dresses to the location, everything should make your wedding guests think of you. This is no different for your menu choice. Granted, not everyone shares the same taste, but try to incorporate your favorite flavors or foods into your day. A great menu will leave your guests satisfied and reminiscing your wedding day for years to come. WRITTEN BY: Ashley Van Roekel - Terrace View Event Center

SWEET TREATS The latest trend in wedding desserts? Hint: it doesn’t have to include only wedding cake! When thinking about a sweet ending to your special day, try thinking outside the box: s’more bars, candy bars, dessert bars, cupcake bars, pie bars, ice cream bars, and the list goes on! You still want to stick with the traditional 3-tiered wedding cake? Why not have both? Keep the cake for you and your new hubby and let your guests indulge with an unlimited dessert bar! Here are some tips you may find helpful in preparation for your big day: Have a Taste: Even if you booked the best baker in town, make sure to find time in your schedule to go taste! Explore a little bit, test out different options, and of course, have some fun with your fiancé while you are at it! Price It Out: Wedding cake often is priced by the slice -- the cost varies, but generally the more complicated the cake the higher the price tag. If you decide to go with a dessert bar, figure out exactly what you want, how much you will need, whether or not there will be any extra add-ons you will need (for example an ice cream bar will need toppings: hot fudge, caramel, cherries, etc.).
Find Ways to Save: If you choose to have cake at your wedding, consider having all tiers fake, besides the one you cut into. Provide sheet cake for the rest of your guests that can be brought out separately. Consider the Weather: This is one I bet you’ve never thought of, am I right? If you’re having an outdoor reception in a hot climate, stay away from whipped cream, meringue, and butter-cream: They melt! Ask your baker about summer icing options; you might want to go for a fondant-covered cake or dessert. A fresh baked apple or strawberry rhubarb pie could also be a good alternative! The Grooms Cake: Don’t forget about your Groom! The Grooms cake is a tradition that has been around for quite some time, but has really made an appearance in the last few years! Ask your groom what he would like- cake or his favorite dessert? If his favorites are fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, find a way to incorporate them somehow! Use them as the thank-you placed at each person’s seat. Then, you get a little bit of everything, cake and dessert (plus you will have a happy man!). MUSIC & DANCING Music plays a key role in the ambiance of a wedding. The options are endless when it comes to deciding music but some ideas include: a string quartet, pianists, guitarists, a DJ, or a live band. Another big part of the planning is deciding when you want music to be played during your big day! At the wedding ceremony you can think about including a prelude as guests enter, the processional songs for when the wedding party and the bride enters, songs to be played during the ceremony or lighting of the unity candle, the recessional as the newlyweds and wedding party exit and then the postlude as guests exit. For the reception it is a good to think about style and/or specific songs for the social hour and dinner music, bridal party and newlywed entrance songs, first dances, cake cutting, bouquet and garter toss and some songs for the whole crowd to dance to. Whether you choose traditional music or take a unique approach, remember this is your day to shine as a couple, so choose songs that you both enjoy! The only time we suggest including fan favorites is during the dance. More people will be willing to dance if they are familiar with the songs being played. It is best to have a variety of songs
and if you have a DJ, they will be a good judge in knowing the crowd and finding songs that will keep the dance floor moving. Need some inspiration? Here is a list of songs that will be sure to get the ideas rolling: “Can’t Help Falling in Love” – Elvis Presley “Lucky” – Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat “A Thousand Years” – Christina Perry “Unforgettable” – Nat King Cole “Happy” – Pharrell Williams “Marry Me” – Train “Uptown Funk” – Bruno Mars “Sugar” – Maroon 5 “I’m Yours” – Jason Mraz “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” – Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole “Better Together” – Jack Johnson “Wonderful Tonight” – Eric Clapton “How Long Will I Love You” – Ellie Goulding “Hallelujah” – Jeff Buckley “When You Say Nothing at All” – Allison Krauss “The Way You Look Tonight” – Tony Bennett “Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran WRITTEN BY: Michaela Denlinger - Terrace View Event Center

PHOTOGRAPHY
So your wedding day has come and gone and you have the most vivid memories of how perfect, wonderful, and fun your wedding was. Eventually you’ll forget some of your favorite moments like how cute your nephew looked when he had cake all over his face, or how perfect your hair looked. That is, unless you have photographs of it! To preserve these once in a lifetime moments, you could rely on your family and friends, or you could treat these wedding pictures as an investment to guarantee you can remember all the details of the most important day of your life. To get started with choosing a photographer, shop around at bridal fairs and look up local photographers online. There are three things that you should keep in mind while shopping for a photographer: Previous work, Personality, and Price. PREVIOUS WORK shows you the quality level you can expect. A lot of thought goes into each composition-the style, the surroundings, how each person interacts with the other. A professional and creative photographer brings each of these elements into your photographs in a way that someone just taking pictures cannot.
photographer makes you feel comfortable and works well with you! PRICE Many people say that their final decision comes down to price. Being price conscious to stay within your budget is commendable, but also keep in mind that if you expect amazing quality photography you need to be willing to pay quality prices. Remember, you are capturing memories you can’t get back. If you don’t get it right, there are no do overs. The ultimate decision for photography is in your hands, but remember to consider previous work, personality, and price as you shop around. KATE + BRENNEN This is going to either be the best, or most stressful day for you and all of the people around you. Make it fun, carefree and full of love! - Kate, C-Starr Photography Bride
Brennen and I, plus our family and wedding party can’t say enough positive things about C-Starr. Chelsi makes everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. She’s up for anything new, creative, fun, and exciting. She will feel like a natural part of your wedding day, while helping keep everyone organized and on time. She is exactly what you need to make your wedding day run smoothly. -Kate

My favorite part from our wedding day, Brennen is very shy around crowds, we were actually worried he would faint during the ceremony. During our first dance Brennen and I forgot about everyone around us and belted out our first dance song to each other. I’ve never had a time where I was more in love and proud of him. - Kate

TRANSPORTATION, HOTELS & HONEYMOON Once the wedding planning has begun one of the most exciting things to plan is the honeymoon! Planning a honeymoon can be a fairly stress-free process, especially with the help of the following advice!
Take online reviews with a grain of salt - If you find consistent reviews that say the same bad things about a particular hotel that is one thing, but if there are only a handful of bad reviews that are not consistent do not fret.
Decide if you want plan your honeymoon through a travel agent – They are very helpful in finding your dream vacation and making sure every last detail is taken care of to keep you traveling smoothly.
Plan the date you leave for your honeymoon wisely - If you know most flights will be early and you want a good night’s rest to recover from all the wedding excitement, it may be best to leave for your honeymoon a couple days after the wedding.
Make a budget – One of the first things to decide is your price range. This will help you narrow down your search of possible locations and it will also be one of the first questions your travel agent will ask you. Look into your top locations seasonal weather - Be sure to check what the weather will be like during the time of year you travel. You do not want to plan a Caribbean vacation at the peak of hurricane season! If you plan on traveling right after your wedding, plan to keep your maiden name when booking your flight and accommodations - This will save any confusion as your flight ticket, passport and I.D. all need to have the same name.
Make sure to pack the necessary items when traveling out of the country - This includes current passports, any necessary vaccinations, and important phone numbers such as your bank and the nearest embassy. Tell everyone that it is your honeymoon Many resorts and hotels have great perks for honeymooners. It is definitely worth looking into before and during your trip. HAPPILY EVER AFTER CHANGING YOUR NAME If you decide to take your new husband’s name, you must make it official. Contrary to popular belief, obtaining a marriage license that uses your new last name does not mean you’ve changed it. Start with your Social Security Card and Driver’s License so that the rest are easy to change. Here’s a list to get you started making your name change official. GET PROOF: Get your Certified Marriage License. Call the office where your license was filed to get copies if they are not automatically mailed. SOCIAL SECURITY CARD: Contact the Social Security Administration by phone or you can fill out an application online. DRIVER’S LICENSE: Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles; you will need your new Social Security Card or your Certified Marriage License.
FILL IN THE BLANKS: Employers Auto registration Credit cards Bank accounts Utilities Medical organizations Legal documents (will, power of attorney, etc…) Billed services (phone, insurance, etc…) Post office Schools and alumni associations Voter registration Passport Mortgage or lease ... and the list goes on. Many of these organizations can change your name over the phone. Others may want to see a copy of your Marriage Certificate and your Driver’s License before they will change your name on the account.
