Pre-season Round Up HARINGEY BOROUGH (O)1, ROMFORD (1)2 BY MIKE WOODS Saturday 3rd July 2O2L ' Pre-Season

Friendly Pre-season friendlies are notoriously unreliable'

indicators of how the regular season will pan out, but this result -and more especially the

manner in which it was achieved, and against a - will put Romford in good heart. The first chance of note fell to the home side. Chiduban Onokwai - who made five appearances for Romford in 2Ol7-1a - planted a header straight at the Romford keeper, but Romford went straight up the other end and fashioned a chance that ended with L'Heureux Menga shooting over the bar.

Step 3 side at that

Christian Adu Gyamfi latched on to a superb ball from Malaki Toussaint but screwed his shot wide after 16 minutes and then Haringey really ought to have opened the scoring two minutes later when Aresti's shot cannoned off the angle

of

post and bar. Romford cleared at the of a corner, from which Haringey's

expense

Djamas headed wide.

On 27 minutes, Romford were ahead. lesse Olukolu picked up a superb throw from his keeper, outpaced his marker and squared the ball for Steve Carvell, whose shot found the net

via a deflection that took it out of the

home

keeper's reach.

Haringey created - and missed - some decent chances for an equaliser, but Romford's defence looked sound; in midfield they showed steel and determination to win the ball, and no shortage of invention; Jacopo Gatti in particular looked comfortable and effective on the ball, but sadly he was forced to miss the second period after picking up a knock before the break. Romford were quickly on the front foot in the second half with Olukolu having one effort well saved before he was found by a superb pass

from Carvell, cut inside and rolled a delicate

shot into the far corner. Christian Adu Gyamfi had a header well saved, and then Olukolu's cross was volleyed narrowly wide by one of Romford's second half substitutes. Haringey pulled a goal back from the penalty spot seven minutes before the end. A Haringey forward was tripped in the box and although Romford's substitute keeper Brandon Bullman went the right way, he could not keep out Aresti's spot kick. Romford's management team of Derek Duncan and Mark Holloway look to have put together a decent squad, even at this early stage of

Redwin.

Despite the scoreline, there was plenty in this hard fought game - which was good to watch to be encouraged about. Jacopo Gatti, who had looked good at Haringey last week, was absent through injury, and also away was Mark Holloway, who was on holiday.

Steve Carvell played the whole match and impressed in midfield, taking all the free kicks'

Christian Adu Gyamfi and L'Heureux Menga both played, but crucially, one in each half

whereas last week they looked a handful together. Jesse Olukolu was very dangerous down the right wing in the first half but was

substituted for the second. The first half was even, although Boro created the better chances. The much of the second half was much the same, but crucially Barking found the net three times, in the 62nd, 75th and 78th minutes. Barking's first goal was an excellent shot just

inside

the post that gave substitute keeper

Brandon Bullman no chance. The second came after Carvell's free kick shaved the post with the keeper well beaten, but almost immediately Barking went up the other end and scored. The third was a bit of a mess, as Bullman played a short pass out to a defender who tried to go long but it ricocheted off an attacker back past the keeper and into the net.

for offside. This came

after

Walthamstow had fashioned a couple of decent chances, but on both occasions the visitors could not get their shots on target, although

after twenty-seven minutes they also had goal ruled out for offside.

Olukolu shortly afterwards. The first of the evening's penalties went to the visitors after thirty-six minutes for a foul, but the Boro keeper plunged to his left to push the spot kick away. In the first minute of first half stoppage time, Menga was put through by a delightful pass, and he rolled his shot into the corner to put Boro ahead. The lead lasted just 60 seconds as Walthamstow levelled with a near identical goal. Four minutes into the second half and Christian

Adu Gyamfi was fouled

in the box and

L'Heureux Menga sent the keeper the wrong way from twelve yards. The third penalty of the evening also went Romford's way. Another trip in the box, and again Menga sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot - in the opposite corner this time.

Two minutes later and the fourth spot kick of the evening was given for what - from this correspondent's viewpoint - looked a decent challenge, although the referee was much better placed! The same Walthamstow forward stepped up to take the kick, and the outcome was the same as the Boro keeper dived to his left to save. Four minutes from the end Chaka Barnett went down under challenge in the box, but the referee decided that on this occasion, it wasn't worth a penalty, even though it looked as good a claim as any of the other four.

A good work out for Romford against decent opposition - Walthamstow will undoubtedly be there or thereabouts at the end of the Essex Senior League season - with much to admire about Boro's play.

SAWBRIDGEWORTH TOWN (O)1, RoMFORD (1)r BY MICHAEL WOODS Saturday 17th July aOZL - Pre-Season

This game was a tale of four penalties as Boro scored twice from the spot, while Walthamstow saw two of their own saved. Boro had the ball in the net in the thirteenth minute, but Christian Adu Gyamfi's effort was

Sawbridgeworth, it was a case of close shaves and good saves that restricted Boro to iust one goal. It was almost inevitable that having had

left. Romford were ahead after iust two minutes. A cross-field ball from Steve Carvell found Jesse Olukolu wide on the right, and not for the last time during the afternoon, he cruised past his marker and delivered a cross. L'Heureux Menga converted from close range with his chest. Sawbridgeworth's first chance of the afternoon

saw them capitalise on some hesitant

Boro

defending, but their effort hit the top of the bar.

Christian Adu Gyamfi hit a post and Jesse Olukolu had a good shot pushed away for a corner as Boro dominated early proceedings, but it really should have been two after thifty-

two minutes as Menga and Adu Gyamfi contrived to miss from close range after yet another good run and cross from Olukolu.

Olukolu rounded off the half by creating a good chance for himselt but his shot was narrowly off target. The second half was not dissimilar to the first. once more it was Olukolu creating a chance for himself, and his fierce shot was well saved by the home goalkeeper by his near post, Romford had the ball in the net for a second

time after fifty-seven minutes, but

Menga's close range strike was ruled out for offside. Sawbridgeworth served notice that they were not out of the game when they forced a good

save from Boro's keeper just after the hour mark when a home forward burst through, and after seventy-five minutes they snatched an equaliser from a similar move. CLAPTON (O)1, ROMFORD BY MICHAEL WOODS

luly - Pre-Season Friendly

Romford's good start to pre-season continued tonight with a 3-1 win over Clapton on the 4G surface at the Kingfisher Hall Primary Academy in Enfield. Christian Adu Gyamfi emulated L'Heureux Menga, who bagged three against Walthamstow last week, with a hat-trick of his own. A strong start from Boro saw Gyamfi converting a penalty after 6 minutes and getting another two minutes later after being played through. His strike partner, L'heureux Menga wasn't there tonight but Boro looked very good coming forward. Clapton got back into it later in the first half, and both teams hit the post shortly before the break, Boro hit the post again shortly after the restart but there were few further chances for each side before Gyamfi completed his hat-trick with an excellent shot over the keeper from the corner of the penalty area after 72 minutes. Clapton's consolation came two minutes from time. Thanks to Phil Redwin and Paul Adams for

the match information. ROMFORD 1, WOODFORD TOWN 2 BY MICHAEL WOODS
