H

elping individuals with hair loss or thinning hair is a passion for Gail Bernardo. She understands it to be part of her calling and she doesn’t take it lightly. Her company is a full service hair replacement provider. She services women, children and men who suffer hair loss due to various issues and circumstances ranging from Alopecia, chemotherapy, and chemical over processing to burn victims, Lupus, Thyroid deficiency and other lifechanging health issues. Bernardo says, “We provide services to the whole person with solutions that inspire self-confidence and self-esteem.” Her company remains dedicated to providing quality services at an affordable price while keeping its clients’ needs as its main objective. “Our goal is to pamper you and reveal your individuality and natural beauty,” she says. It all started when Bernardo decided, as a professional working in a courtroom, she needed a protective and attractive hair style while she was transitioning her hair back to its natural state. She began wearing lace front wigs and loved it so much she eventually began working within the industry. “While working for a hair replacement company I encountered individuals from all walks of life with hair loss issues. I began to see the importance of having beautiful hair and how it contributes to one’s positive self-image, particularly those who have lost their hair through chemotherapy,” she said. “My passion to help others look and feel good drove me to this business. Every day I go home knowing that I made a difference in someone’s life.” Bernardo often reassured her clients that she understood them and what they were experiencing. Certainly, she did sympathize with her clients and had true compassion towards them, but the fact of the matter was that she couldn’t truly empathize with them, because she had never been in their shoes or had to deal with their problems. In 2014, everything changed, including Bernardo’s status. After a series of misdiagnoses, and a severe health scare, she was informed she had Multiple Myeloma – a cancer of the body’s plasma. The diagnosis was devastating, but Bernardo was relieved to finally know what was wrong with her body. She ultimately had a very successful, stem-cell transplant, spending only three weeks recovering in the hospital. Although her surgery went very well, Bernardo was yet plagued with a feeling akin to what she could only describe as hypocrisy. “When I lost all my hair and I looked at myself in the mirror I felt like I owed my clients an apology,” she said. “I had a chance to really experience what my clients were

going through and it was really devastating because so many times I would share with them that I understood what it was like to not have any hair, but I really didn’t understand because it hadn’t happened to me.” “Even though my hair did come back, I felt God gave me an opportunity to experience what I do every day for others and rethink taking hair for granted. I had hair down my back, and then I was bald. I have a different kind of passion for men, women and children who lose their hair. I’m thankful I went through what I went through because it gave me a different type of passion for my clients.”

organ Brandon of Durham wears many hats. Among them are mother, sister, friend, and cousin. Yet, most of all she is a goal achiever.

Morgan was reared in a single parent household but had a dream to do great things with her life. The youngest of three siblings, and the only daughter to her parents, Morgan says she had words of prosperity spoken over her before she was born. It was said that she would be a business owner and become the CEO of her corporation. She would also conduct business meetings and her name would be etched into the minds of those in attendance as a strong black woman. “Words have power and I also know that persistence pays off,” she says. Her grandmother had a love and talent for cosmetology. She completed the course, Morgan says but never worked professionally. She was the neighborhood “kitchen cosmetologist” with a loyal following of friends and neighbors. She even taught Morgan how to use Marcel curlers and gave her a vintage pair. When she passed, Morgan honored her by styling her hair.

“ At age 12, she penned her dream of owning five salons as a licensed cosmetologist during a journal writing session in Language Arts class. “Every doll that I received for Christmas got their hair styled on Christmas night. I had heads in the sink getting shampooed and I started to do my own hair at age eight. I even had loyal and paying customers at age 12,” she says. She set out on life to accomplish her goals, but as life would have it, there were roadblocks and stepping stones along the way. Continued on the next page

She received a high school equivalency degree and eventually graduated from Carolina Beauty College in 2004. Morgan then worked at several commissioned based salons before renting a booth which allowed to learn more about the hair styling industry from a different perspective. “The best lesson I learned was understanding my self worth and that I am a professional with a whole lot to offer,” she says. In June 2016, Morgan took a step of faith to move out into a space of her own, Morgan’s Hair Studio. As a business owner, she benefits from several perks that come with it. “I love the fact that I get to work at my own pace and create relationships with my clients. I also understand the importance of being an example to others,” she says. Morgan’s Hair Studio offers a variety of services ranging from chemicals, cuts, braids, weaves, and extensions. Additionally she offers the very popular “chemical- free silk wrap’

which has a natural, scientific effect to the hair. More importantly, she strives to provide her clients with the best quality and highest level of customer service available. “I love the fact that this was a long-term dream and goal, and through faith, God has allowed me to achieve,” she says. Brandon offers sound advice to others who may follow in her footsteps. “Never give up on your dreams or goals and never think you’re too old to start. Always trust and believe in God,” she says. “When doors open for me and I see a dream realized, it strengthens and molds me into a mindset where I only want the best and more.” h

By Terry L. Watson - Photos by LFC onald Thompson, also known as PR, is a husband and father of many children. He is the Senior Pastor of Love and Forgiveness Church in Durham, N.C. Most who know him would describe him as a very selfless man who has an unquestionable love for God. While others might say he tries to live his life so that others might see God in him. A native of Richmond Virginia, Ronald also believes that all people can live a prosperous life with Christ, just as long as they give God a chance.

Ronald and Melissa, along with all the owners of LFC have built a church where anyone is welcome to be served and fed. He believes God has called them to impact generations to come of younger people. Therefore, Ronald’s personal plight is to see young men raised up to be mighty men of God. “I came from the streets and experienced the world in all kind of ways. Now that I have Christ, I see life for what it is and what it should be,” says Ronald. “I want other people that come from the ‘hood and streets’ to know there is more to life than a hustle and the block,” he says.

Melissa, also known as Pastor Meeme, brings her own brand of flavor to their ministry. She believes that music is one way to bridge the gap between the Kingdom and the world, which is why she often rewrites songs to perform for the youth. She loves family, literally and figuratively. Along with Ronald they are parents to nine kids who make everyday of their lives adventurous and meaningful. Melissa also enjoys being a friend to others and serving in anyway needed. Melissa was born and raised in the backwoods of Virginia. Her first dream growing up was to sing and act in Hollywood. Now, her dream is to see others lives changed for the better. Their testimony is very simple and mirrors most of the members of LFC. They have been shunned and talked about. They have made hundreds and thousands of mistakes and even committed the same sins over and over again, while expecting different results from God, but were not willing to sacrifice for spiritual gain. “We have and sometimes still choose the way of the world, and not the ways of God. But one thing that remains the same, Jesus still loves us. He died for us so because of Him, we are free from condemnation and been made clean,” says Melissa. LFC began in the Thompson’s home during the summer of 2012 with just their existing family members that totaled five. “We openly began to invite friends and neighbors in and our membership grew to living room capacity by the end of summer,” says Melissa. As God would have it, they grew tremendously, and they soon conducted services at North Carolina State University’s Arboretum in September of 2012. LFC offers a serving experience on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m., where everyone is welcomed to come in as they are and hear God’s Word. There is no dress code, no spirit code, and no religion code. “We encourage people to come and hear the word, plain,” says Ronald. “We believe in healthy relationships whether it be a young child, teen, single, married, or seasoned adult. We offer fellowship opportunities for the different groups to provide environments for healthy relationship development outside of the church walls”. LFC has a “No Judge Zone” from the parking lot to the very place where the word is rendered. According to Melissa, they are a group of young, imperfect people serving a perfect God. “We do not believe it is our job to change people through hell-bound Word, but through the Word and love of Christ because we love as Christ loves us. We are here in this city purposely reaching people that are near and far from God to teach them the love of Christ,” she says. Their vision is intertwined in 1 Peter 4:8 which says, “Love covers a multitude of sins”. Ronald says they are after the un-churched. They are not recruiting people that are in their set churches. “We are here for people who feel like they do not belong in a church because of how they look, because of their sexuality, because they once didn’t believe, because they’ve been hurt by someone in the church, because they drink, smoke, live unmarried, club, or whatever. These very people used to be all of us one point of time. These very people are still at LFC, being developed,” he says. Unfortunately, many will come and not return because they feel once the church finds out what they are doing outside the walls, they will not be loved or welcomed. This is far from the truth at LFC. “Consistency, is the key to growth and prosperity in the things of God and life,” says Ronald. They currently reside at Mercury Studios at 401 W. Geer Street in Durham, N.C., and are in a progression stage in which they are developing themselves and God’s people to build His Church, according to His plan. LFC is anticipating a re-launch in the near future and are embracing new partners to assist in pushing God’s vision. h

F

rederick Lee is a self described renaissance man. He’s a cook, an artist, a father, and a two-time NC A&T State University graduate who is known to push himself to the limits, and someone that would do anything for his friends and family. Frederick Lee is also the Chef and owner of Renaissance Cheesecakes.

What was once a hobby, Lee turned into a business. After taking his personal favorite White Chocolate Raspberry cheesecake to his family’s annual 4th of July cookout, one of the family members suggested that he should start selling them. That holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas, he sold 30 cheesecakes. That was the beginning of Renaissance Cheesecakes. After spending some time in the culinary program at the Art Institute of Raleigh/Durham to develop his cooking and baking skills, Lee began with just five flavors, which has now grown to more than thirty. The menu continues to grow as new ideas, suggestions, and inspirations pour in. In order to produce the freshest taste possible, each cheesecake is hand made to order with all sauces, crusts, and toppings made from scratch in house. Customers have described the cheesecakes to be “decadent, flavorful and delicious.” The cheesecakes come in multiple sizes; Small (5 inches), Medium (8 inches), and Large (10 inches). Customers also have the option of ordering the minis which come in quantities of 12 and can be ordered in a single flavor or assorted flavors. These are a great idea for party desserts or just to sample all of the flavors. Lee says he loves the feedback he receives from those who have tasted his cakes. “The fact that people enjoy something that I created with my mind and my hands, or sometimes being able to witness peoples reactions to tasting the cheesecakes for the first time is a very gratifying, humbling, and motivating thing to me,” he says. Owning his own bakery surely does come with a strict set of challenges. In addition to being a parent and working a fulltime job to ensure that all of his bills are paid, Lee still remains committed to Renaissance Cheesecakes. “I am everything to the business. I take the orders. I get the ingredients and the supplies, bake the cheesecakes and also deliver them. I’m my own street team. I have a little help here and there which I appreciate, but I am the 99% of everything that goes into my business,” he says.

The customers of Renaissance Cheesecakes have also became friends of the business. They have pushed the business as if they were employees. “Word of mouth has been my biggest asset. Almost every new order I receive has been due to someone referring him. It’s the biggest reason why I am where I am today. It’s an affirmation for Lee that he’s on the right path, and that it’s something that he should continue to do. Moving forward Lee hopes to find a store front location. He also hopes to grow his business to the next level by reaching out to new people who has never heard of Renaissance Cheesecakes. “I have a lot of friends who own and operate their own businesses as their full time job and they love it. It lets me know that it can be done,” says Lee. “This is ultimately a business I want leave my son one day”. h

A

ubree Dean of Huntersville, N.C. is a 10-year-old entrepreneur. While most kids her age should be totally dependent of the support of others, she has found a way to make her own cash. In the past, she has operated lemonade stands to raise awareness for the children in Cameroon and also to give toys and school supplies to a soup kitchen in her community. In third grade, she made and sold rainbow loom bands to raise nearly $800 for the people who were affected by a typhoon in the Philippines. During these experiences, she also learned a lot about herself and eventually started her very own business. Aubree’s Salads On The Go LLC started in February of 2016, and was incorporated in April. “I was just doing it as a fundraiser to raise money to attend The Junior National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. However, customers kept requesting the salads. So my mom filled out the corporation papers to make it a legitimate business,” she says. The response was so great that Aubree’s Salads On The Go LLC took off. Dean sells salads in a mason jar. She puts the dressing at the bottom, and then tops it off with fruits and vegetables, then the lettuce. “You must store the jar upright, or else the dressing will get on the lettuce and it will become soggy,” she says. She is inspired by healthy lifestyles. Since she swims every day, it only makes sense that she would want to eat healthy. Salads On The Go are convenient and provides her customers with healthy lunch and dinner options. Dean says that she had to learn a lot about running her business as she went along. When a local news station did a segment on her business, at the time she was making salads at her home. She did not know that she needed to be in compliant with her county health department. “We had to find a commercial kitchen in the area that would be willing to let us use their kitchen on a regular basis, and on set days. Her mom also had to shop around for commercial insurance for the business and went to the sales tax office so that she could accurately report and pay the sales tax on her business. The favorite part about Dean’s business she says is the extra time that she gets to spend with her mom and dad. Her business also offers her more flexibility to spend time with friends, but only if they are willing to help. In the future, Dean says she plans on marketing the salads to gyms, personal trainers, and other companies in her community. She will also begin to offer her product in plastic jars so that people can take salads and enjoy them at swimming pools (glass containers are not allowed in swimming pools). She is also in the process of working on a deal with a local aquatic and fitness center to use their kitchen on a long-term basis and offer salads as a membership perk to their clients. Her future looks bright and the world should expect to see a lot more from this young business professional. h

Summer Time Skin Care

S

ummer is a time filled with traveling, outdoor fun and typically an increase in physical activity. Sun exposure becomes a mainstay of these experiences and with this exposure one begins to consider sun related illnesses and ailments. For many more of us, we are concerned about ways to keep our skin healthy, hydrated and radiant. Besides staying covered and drinking plenty of water (cheat with Gatorade even) there are other essential habits to include that will have you and others loving the skin you are in. Sunscreen: Many of us know better to go to the beach without carrying sunscreen but where we are lacking is in our daily routine coverage. Over time sun exposure is not beneficial to your skin. Sun damage typically comes in the form of persistent hyperpigmentation, premature wrinkling of skin and age spots but for others malignant forms of skin cancer is a very real complication. Prevent harmful damage from the sun by using a sunscreen that provides a SPF 50 or more. Choose a sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide for best results. For the face choosing products with antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E gives an extra benefit. As far as body care, SPF 50 is still the goal but for easier application consider using a spray sunscreen. There is no indication that spray is better than lotion or vice versa. The mode of application is dependent on consumer preference. Remember however with any product chosen, re-applying is necessary if sweating or if sun exposure is consistently more than 1-2 hours.

Regular use of moisturizers is the most important part of the day-to-day routine for everyone. Avoid feeling like moisturizers are heavy on the skin by investing in a bath oil after you wash and/or using a shower oil. By using one of these as soon as you are done showering you are allowing products to fully penetrate your skin layers as your skin dries. If more moisture is needed, go for more moisturization with a light lotion application and build coverage as needed. Lastly, for intense moisturizing consider using a cream at night to lock in moisture as you sleep. Exfoliate: Exfoliating the skin is an important factor in any skin care regimen regardless of the season. Habitual exfoliation helps to get rid of dead skin cells which in turn speed up the skin renewal process. New healthy skin cells take the place of the dead cells and in turn your complexion goes from dull to bright, vibrant, and smooth. Additionally regular exfoliation will reduce fine lines and wrinkles and keeps your skin feeling much softer. Facial exfoliation can be accomplished by investing in a dermatological recommended Retinol (Vitamin A) for application at night. Care should be taken to not apply when there is known upcoming extended time in the sun. Secondly gentle facial scrubs are perfect for helping to remove dead skin cells. Check with a skin care provider to find out which product works best for your skin. Lastly, don’t forget your body. The easiest way to exfoliate your skin (body) is to use a loofah or body brush. Jason Griffith is a well rounded individual who has earned the respect and trust of his fellow sales team and community through hard work, honesty and consistency. His career began in 1992 at RPM Nissan, now Michael Jordan Nissan in Durham, N.C. Now at Capital, he holds the rank of E2 Level III Sales Consultant and Automobile Sales Consultant and Product Specialist. Griffith sales new and certified preowned Ford vehicles and a large selection of both foreign and domestic vehicles. Griffith was born in Norfolk Virginia, but raised in Raleigh, N.C. He was educated in the Wake County School system and attended Wake Technical Community College. There he studied HVAC and business. Griffith says God knew he would need help in life, and so He blessed him with Emma, and they celebrate 24 years of marriage together. Griffith considers himself to be a entrepreneur. He is currently an Independent Business Owner of Total Life Changes and recently

When Griffith isn’t working he can be found traveling, bowling, fishing, bike riding or watching the sport of martial arts. His previous years as an active Taekwondo Martial Artist taught Griffith patience, balance, flexibility, posture, speed, timing and power. These are qualities that he has been able to apply to his sales job. “Selling cars requires patience and balance. I must be capable of listening to the needs of my clients and finding the right balance between their likes and needs, while ensuring them that the time is right to buy,” he says. Griffith says he owes a lot of credit to his grandparents, Cecil and Sadie Griffith who raised him. “They both had successful careers that transformed lives and their community. My grandfather was a WWII Veteran and retired as a Lieutenant at Polk Youth Center in Raleigh. My grandmother was a Parks and Recreation Supervisor at Walnut Terrace Recreation Center in Raleigh. They were also long time active workers at Davie Street Presbyterian Church. Growing up watching them instilled strong work ethics and integrity in me,” he says. More than anything, Griffith says he enjoys helping and meeting new people. The car sales industry is a tough one and he has been able to survive only because he has remained tough. “With the changing economy, people’s buying power changes also due to layoffs and downsizing of companies. When no one has money to purchase a vehicle, I am unable to make money as well. These are the times when I have learned to truly appreciate those who support me when deciding to purchase a new car,” he says. h

He achieved this by being in the top 10% of the nation via the voice of the customer in new car sales, certified preowned sales, being level 3 certified and a product specialist.
