By The Charlotte Invasion Tonya Phifer, hometown hoop star, brings the newest franchise of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League to Charlotte. Phifer was born, raised and educated in the Charlotte area. She still holds records at Charlotte Latin and UNC-Charlotte for most points scored by a female basketball player. Phifer has a long list of career achievements including first team AllConference USA, 2001 WNBA draft prospect – having been invited and participating in the 2001 WNBA combine, and Top 5 in scoring in UNCC history. After a stellar collegiate career, Phifer went on to start an impressive professional career as a private investigator. She moved back to Charlotte in 2013 and Charlotte Invasion was born shortly thereafter. This hometown team is sure to revive the women’s basketball fans that have felt displaced since the WNBA team, Charlotte Sting left in 2007. “Charlotte Invasion will serve as a home for those players transitioning from college, overseas, and former WNBA players alike. And their main goal is to bring a championship back to Charlotte,” says CEO/owner Tonya Phifer. Charlotte Invasion’s purpose is to provide ladies ages 20 and older in and around their community the opportunity to compete in basketball beyond amateur status. The goal of the organization is to influence the lives of young women by reflecting positive attitudes, discipline and teamwork.

Charlotte Invasion’s 2014 inaugural season was impressive. They ranked 4th place overall in the region – earning them a place in the regional playoffs, had two players in the top 10 in the region, and had a player, Lindsey Montgomery drafted to the Euro League and is now playing for Romania. Going into its second season in the WBCBL, Charlotte Invasion has even higher goals – to do something that has never been done in their region – to bring home a championship.

Tamilia Wright
She Is Running The Show By Terry L. Watson Photos by Tamia Wright
Tamia Wright says she is a maturing lion cub and the daughter of a lioness who has protected her cubs and provided for them thoroughly. The lioness has set the direction and given much of herself so that her cubs may follow their dreams and aspirations. Wright is a track star that runs with the best at Burlington Williams High School in Burlington, N.C. She not only excels on the track but also in the classroom. She was recently invited into the National Society of High School Scholars. Through all of her academic and personal achievements she is most grateful for what she has been able to do on the track field. “I love competing and showing that I have worked extra hard to get to the top. The top is where I want to stay,” she says. In addition to running with Williams, Wright was also a member of the The Durham Striders Youth Association, a Durham based community organization that provides training for children between the ages of 6 to 18 years. During her first year of running with the Durham Striders she was picked on and misplaced in events. “I decided that never again would I be left behind and since that moment I have always qualified for the regionals and even the nationals in Illinois, Michigan, California, Nebraska and Maryland,” Wright says. Wright says she has no choice but to succeed. She was raised by a single mother and along with her grandmother, they pushed her to never settle for less. After high school, she plans to attend college and pursue a degree in Nursing or an Athletic Training. Wright says she plans to participate in a track and field athletics program on the collegiate level as well.

Tanya
Bunch By Terry L. Watson Photos by Latin Diva
Latin Diva was the name given to Tanya Bunch by her mother. It means that she is a Diva who loves to dance and look great while doing it. As it turns out, this totally describes the type of person she has become. Bunch says she loves inspiring others to stay fit and have fun while doing it. Zumba is a Latin inspired fitness program that incorporates different type of dances. Bunch’s classes are unique, mainly becuase she has her own flair. “I mix it up with music from the 90s, salsa and squats. You never
know what you will dance to in my class but after its completion you will have burned well over 800 calories,” she says. She has been dancing all of her life. However she didn’tbegin teaching until four years ago. She was laid off from managing a weight loss center. She then taught one class every other week. Then all of a sudden the demand grew so fast and now here she is ― The Latin Diva. “I provide you with an amazing workout to get you moving. I have helped many women lose a lot of weight. I also sell a healthy supplement called THRIVE to assist in the weight loss.

The Triad Hornets incorporate community service activities into its program by collecting can food for the homeless and by conducting a toy drive for others who are less fortunate during the Christmas holiday season each year. Their program began two years ago under the direction and vision of Jason Keith. He wanted to inspire young boys to be the best they can be. Most importantly, he wanted to give back to the community and keep our young boys out of the streets. Their season runs from September to June and they play approximately 20 games within its duration. The kids on the team benefit by having a safe place to come and be led by strong male figures. They are also provided a free pair of shoes. The Triad Hornets pride themselves with being very involved with its players. They also do house calls and school visits and remain determined to do what it takes for their players to be productive citizens. This includes making sure the kids family lives are left at the door. When the kids are practicing the coaches want them to have at least one way to release the stresses from their day and enjoy a sport that they like.
Pictured with the team is Jason Keith (founder).
They once had a player on the team who was having issues at school. The Triad Hornets pulled together as a family and addressed those issues and now the player is doing much better. In the future they plan to expand their grade levels, win more games and develop successful young men.

By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company, LLC Jerry Garner is hard working, caring, and energetic. He loves the Lord and loves life. While growing up he focused on the strengths of both of his parents and credits their influences into making him into the person that he is today. He has made mistakes, and there were choices and decisions he made that caused him to be incarcerated for eight years, time that he realizes was valuable to his family. However, instead of allowing the incarceration to negatively affect him, it gave him strength and determination. During his incarceration he developed a strong relationship with God and began focusing on how he could impact the lives of others ― right where he was. He began studying and earned a certificate. He worked with other inmates and trained them. Through trial and error Garner began developing his passion to help others transform their physical bodies and mindset. The passing of his father heightened his awareness of the value of nutrition and understanding what you eat affects how you feel, how you look and your overall health. Silk is a character name Garner had as a model, and it stuck with him during his incarceration. The name represents his personal character of being smooth, calm, and laid back ― Body by Silk. We are a training facility that provides guidance, instruction and classes as it relates to physical fitness and nutrition. We specialize in meal planning, competition, physical therapy, weight loss, weight gain, exercise classes and mental fitness. He has all types of clients dealing with various issues including obesity, or those seeking to put on muscle. He also serves those who may be injured and need rehabilitation. Whether it be in packed gymnasiums or under the pressure of intense games, she confesses there is nothing equally satisfying to the feeling she gets while getting hype with her teammates. “My teammates, they push me, keep me level headed and open up more opportunities for me on offense by stepping up and playing their roles. My coach pushes me harder than I’ve ever been pushed before,” she says. “I have noticed my skills getting better. I think it is happening because of my hard work and dedication.” Williams says she is really inspired by her mother who she says has taught how to maintain her focus on the important things like her studies, being the best she can be and working for what I want and realizing that it’s not going to come easy.

Serena Williams won her 19th Grand Slam title and continued her unbeaten run in six Australian Open finals by extending her decade-long domination of Maria Sharapova. She struggled with a hacking cough, she was sick, and she twice celebrated too early, but she held her composure in a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory on January 31, 2015. On her third match point, she let her racket go before hearing a let call to what she thought was an ace.
Boxing Great Joe Frazier Dies Provided by CBS Sports
Joe Frazier, the hard-hitting boxing heavyweight who handed the legendary Muhammad Ali his first defeat, died last month, just a month after being diagnosed with liver cancer, his family said in a statement. The former heavyweight champion, who was 67, became a legend in his own right and personified the gritty working-class style of his hard-knuckled hometown, Philadelphia -- a fitting setting for the “Rocky” film series, starring Sylvester Stallone as hardscrabble boxer Rocky Balboa.
The Black History Made By Charlie Scott Provided by ESPN
Charlie Scott, a New York playground legend is possibly one of the greatest to ever come out of Rucker Park. Once credited by Tiny Archibald with ‘inventing the crossover’, Scott was a baller’s baller. In 1966, legendary head coach Dean Smith came calling with the intension of making him the first African-American scholarship player at the University of North Carolina. At that time it was unheard of in the south to be recruited by a predominantly white school, let alone one as prestigious as UNC-Chapel Hill. He refused to allow racist remarks from fans on the road to take away from his game and his team. From Phil Ford, to Michael Jordan, to Vince Carter, to Ty Lawson, the legacy all leads back to one Charlie Scott.
