“We normally train about 5-6 times a week. However, our careers as coaches can be extremely demanding and the opportunity to train sometimes decrease to 4-5 times a week. We make it our duty to involve ourselves in physical activity whether it’s running outside or playing volleyball.”

Darlene (Assitant Coach at NCCU) and Arlene (Assitant Coach at NC A&T)

“Our approach on fitness is not only to help athletes or individuals who work out regularly but those who want to lose weight, gain weight, get stronger or simply maintain their health. Making the first step is always the hardest step but all it takes is the first! Fitness is love!” Photographs provided by James Williams

Introducing The Mitchell Twins

Arlene & Darlene perspective.

s if they really need an introduction. If you have recently attended a volleyball game at North Carolina A&T State University or North Carolina Central University, you possibly have noticed them pacing the sidelines, enthusicaticly and passionately leading thier teams from a coaches

They are young energetic women with a passion for health and fitness. Their life of sports began at age eight with track and field. “We remained extremely active throughout elementary where we ran summer track (Henderson Vance Striders) picked up basketball, and became a three sport athlete once we reached high school. We got a late start in the volleyball world, only starting the sport as freshmen in high school,” they explain. Picking up the bases at a rapid pace, with the help of their high school coach and attending UNC‘s volleyball camps every summer, it led them to a state championship in their senior year, sharing that accomplishment with s state championship in track and field as well. After high school, they made the decision to accept an offer to attend North Carolina A&T State University, taking on a bachelor’s degree in Sports Science/Fitness Management. Their journey continued onto volleyball at the the collegiate level. Shortly after graduating, they briefly engaged in personal training at a respected gym (The Rush Fitness) before obtaining career positions at NC A&T. Arlene started her college coaching career and Darlene took the position as the Assistant Sports Information Director. In 2011, Darlene was offered the volleyball assistant coaching position at North Carolina Central University and she proudly accepted. S

Even in the beginning stages of the company, the husband and wife duo have faced challenges like most business owners and struggled in the area of gaining support from local businesses and the community. However, with great persistence and believing in the growth and impact of the business, the program has grown from starting out with 50 youth to now 200 athletes. By Desere Cross Photos by Greg Hill hen athletes come to the Top Tier Basketball Academy, they will be told to leave their egos at the door and their 100 percent on the floor. Top Tier Basketball Academy is a monthly skills-based boys basketball camp for grades 6th - 12th. This four hour academy focuses on skill development, cultivates selfdiscipline and consists of four main components: fitness, basketball IQ, skill and 5 on 5 scrimmages. Top Tier Basketball Academy was created by Justin Burton, in collaboration with Greg Hill of Cultural Change United, for young men aspiring to play college basketball. Burton and Hill, both 25 years-old, played high school basketball together at Riverside High School in Durham, N.C. Burton went on to play division 1 basketball at Winthrop University, where he played starting point guard and led his team to the NCAA Tournament. Upon graduating, he embarked on his career as a certified basketball trainer. Hill attended N.C. A&T State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in economics. He is now a full time youth motivational speaker, author and CEO of Cultural Change United. Currently, he handles the business side of Top Tier and serves as its director of operations. Burton handles the sports side and serves as Top Tier’s drill and workout coordinator.

For Hill, starting Top Tier Basketball Academy was important for one reason; he wanted to sow back into his community. “I want to provide a blue print for the younger generation for what entrepreneurship looks like. I want to show them how to build partnerships with friends and create something valuable in the community,” said Hill, referring to his partnership with Burton. Although Top Tier is in its beginning stages, it has high hopes for the future. With the help of the community and sponsorship from local businesses, Top Tier aims to become the top basketball academy in North Carolina and eventually in the U.S. However, in order to reach this goal; Top Tier has acknowledged it will need a steady flow of volunteers and sponsorship for t-shirts and sports equipment. For more information about Top Tier Basketball Academy, donating or volunteering, please email S Greg Hill at gregoryehill1@gmail.com

The mission of Top Tier is to equip kids aspiring to play college basketball with the skills they will need to be successful not only on the court, but off the court as well. In addition to focusing on fitness, basketball IQ, skill, and scrimmaging, the academy also incorporates workshops focusing on communication, college finance and leadership development. “We want to prepare our athletes with the skills they’ll need to answer post-game interview questions, manage their money once they get to college, and to handle the responsibility that comes with being a college athlete,” said Greg Hill. www.Spunq-Sports.com

N.C.

onique McCullough is a leader in her community and she has taken on the dynamic task as president of the Carolina Cowboys Athletic Association located in Greensboro,

She established the organization in 2012, and she set out to serve the community by developing scholar athletes and community leaders. With this mission, her goal is to be another positive avenue for the overall development of the youth and families that connect with her group. She firmly believes that sports build character and she hopes that the lessons of teamwork, integrity, dedication and accountability that the youth learn will carry over into their school and home life. The end result of their mission is to see all of the children on their teams become successful adults whether they continue in sports beyond their experience with them or not. The organization is a not-forprofit member organization of the national Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and has also participated in USSSA athletic events. One of the main reasons the Carolina Cowboys Athletic Association was started was due to the encouragement and tremendous support from Vice President, Michael Wyman. He noticed McCullough administrative and leadership skills and they began strategizing on an organization that could benefit children interested in sports. He, like other parents in the community, wanted a good, fair, travel sports organization that is a positive impact for youth. In the beginning, the organization had several people who turned them down thinking that it wouldn’t work because there were similar programs in the community. However, they found a few like-minded Continued on next page www.Spunq-Sports.com

individuals who were willing to do the work to make this organization happen. The organization is supported by the following staff members: Michael Wyman, vice president; Maurice Withers, athletic director; Natachia Smith, secretary; Angela Galloway, cheer; Ralph Gordon, basketball; Jay Anderson, director of football and a host of volunteer coaches and parents.

November 2014

The Carolina Cowboys Athletic Association serves children ages five to high school in several different sports. The football players and cheerleaders are ages five to 15, and for basketball, the age group is middle school and high school students. In the upcoming basketball season, they are working on putting together a younger team for third and fourth graders. In addition, they are planning to launch a baseball program.

Monique McCollough (President) and Micheal Wyman (Vice President) together founded the Carolina Cowboys organization.

In the fall of 2012, the Carolina Cowboys hosted their first football and cheer season with three football teams and two cheer squads. In 2013, they launched basketball with two teams (7th and 8th graders). In addition, the group is considered more of a travel club because they participate in games and tournaments outside of the local area in places like Virginia, New Jersey, and the Maryland and DC area. Furthermore, the membership fees for the Carolina Cowboys Athletic Association vary depending on the requirements of each sports program. The group is always recruiting youth for their sports teams and most people have become involved because they want to be active in their children’s activities. The organization is very family friendly and encourage parents to volunteer.

alik Stimpson of Grimsley High School describes himself as a son of God who is also intelligent. He strives for the best in all that he does and as the starting quarterback for his varsity football team, he often plays at his very best. As quarterback Stimpson acknowledges that he is a leader and also a role model to some. The game has offered him many rewards and he hopes it will open many doors in his future. “Basically, its a way for me to escape from everything negative and just do something I love. Most of all football can develop you into a man and prepare your future. Playing quarterback helps me do to do just that,” he says.

“My father’s death at a young age is tremendously impacted my life. However it gave me the motivation to become the young man I am today. My big brother Shaquon Stimpson and big cousin Antonio Stimpson situations impacted me because knowing we were supposed to make it in football but being at the wrong place at the wrong time has ruined their chances and made me think twice before I make decisions now.

“My most memorable moment would be last year against Smith because throughout the game we had major game changing turnovers but with the great team I have, no one put me down and we fought and got the win. We made the playoffs which hasn’t been done in many years. That was also my best game, not because of statistics, but because it was a huge character boost for myself. Remember that you can be whatever you want to be. You just have to be willing to sacrifice at times and always give 110% in all that you do. REACH FOR THE STARS!

BRIANA

HAITH Track & Field Star

“My

biggest academic achievement is yet to come.“ reensboro native Briana Haith has a lot yo be thankful for. She’s smart, athletically and academically gifted and understands that nothing comes easy in life. Everything requires hard work, and that she is very consistent with. She says her biggest academic achievement is yet to come as she is currently working on it now to receive her bachelors degree at the University of South Carolina where she is also a member of the Track and Field team. After completing that fete she plans to attend graduate school and be an Olympian.

This year has been very special for Briana. She captured her first All-American title in the 4x4 as a freshman with her team for Indoor. They finished 7th at the NCAA nationals and 3rd at SEC. She ran a 53.21 in the 400 for a personal best out doors. She also ran a 51.43 split on the anchor leg for the 4x4. She says she hopes to turn that into a 400m time.

Briana says she has a great support system from my coaches and her parents, Thomas and Halima Paylor. “They are always behind me and encouraging me to stay focus. They come to almost every meet. It’s a good feeling to be able to look up and see them,” she says. Her achievement as an athlete happened when she became a Gamecock. Briana had been competing since she was seven years old with the Greensboro Champions, under coach Roy Thompson. In 2010, she was selected to the National Scholastic Sports Foundation to compete in the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Puerto Rico to represent the USA. Later that summer she won the 200 meters at the USATF Junior Olympics which was a good accomplishment for her. “This was my first gold medal at the junior Olympics,” she says. “One day I will make the USA team and compete in the Olympic Games”. Briana says Track and Field has impacted her life by making her more competitive and aware of the responsibility of being a role model to younger people. She has met Olympic Gold Medalist Sandra Richardson Ross ,Francena McCorory who competes for the USA, Melisa Barber and her twin sister Mikele Barber who also were Gamecocks. One days she hopes to be a physical therapist for athletes. She also would like to help our youth in someway by giving back. I love the team I am on and have been fortunate to still run with some outstanding athletes from North Carolina who compete with me on a S high level.

SPUNQ SPORTS November 2014

CHRISTOPHER GATTIS

hristopher Tyrick Gattis just recently graduated from Graham High School in June of 2014; he is currently a student at Central Carolina Community College enrolled in the University transfer program and is a player on the basketball team at Central Carolina. Since recreation ball, playing college basketball has been a dream for Tyrick that has come true. Coming out of high school as an athlete that plays a very competitive sport called basketball, there are always the desires to be able to follow your dream and play college basketball. Only issue is, where to play, what level to play on and of course becoming a college athlete on anybody’s team is not an easy process. These were the main concerns that Tyrick had as his senior year came to a close and his options were not as what he had thought they would be on the basketball recruitment process. Tyrick finished at Graham High with over a 3.0 GPA, so grades was not a concern for him, but where to follow his college basketball

“It is not where you start, but it is what you do once you get there to make it to the next level.” dream was what troubled him the most. Tyrick wanted to pick a good school that he could earn a degree in as well as fit in. As an athlete you make sure you attend the right events, you make sure you play on the right AAU team, you work out with trainers on a weekly basis, you go that extra mile just to be able to compete and be seen by college coaches. For most serious athletes, this starts around the age of 9 or 10 years old, the dedication and commitment to making your dream of playing college ball come true. Tyrick www.Spunq-Sports.com

started working on his dream by training with BJ Timmons, owner of Carpentry 101 Athletic Training, at the age of 10 years old. At that time, Tyrick was not the best player, but had the heart and knew basketball was what he wanted to do. Tyrick trained with BJ 3 times a week from age 10 up to his senior of high school, right before he left for college. Training with BJ is what helped him become the player he is today. Right now, Tyrick continues to train with BJ whenever he is home from school because working on your game never stops. Even with the training and the hard work, what happens when the dream doesn’t always come in the package that you expected, do you give up on what you have worked so hard for or do you take the route that God has put in place for you and you run with it to the highest level? It is not where you start, but what you do when you get there to make it to the next level is what Tyrick keeps in the back of his head. Tyrick chose to take the opportunity that God had in place for him and signed to play basketball with Central Carolina Community College located in Sanford NC. With the help of Rod Cousin in the recruitment process, the director of Mid-State Magic, Tyrick had

several college offers from Greensboro to Tennessee, but none of the schools offered a full ride. The schools were offering over $30k in academic scholarship funds for Tyrick, but tuition was $45k, that would leave $15k more per year for his mother Jeanette Florence to come up with for Tyrick to attend. Putting that type of debt on his mom was not an option for Tyrick even though he knew she would do whatever to make it happen. After talking with Rod Cousin and weighing out his options, Tyrick decided to attend a junior college with hopes of receiving a full scholarship from a University after his first year. Tyrick currently is enrolled in the University transfer program, Tyrick plans to major in Business at his next college. Tyrick already has interest from other schools and plans to continue to pursue his college dreams. S www.Spunq-Sports.com

Travelling, Stage suits and tanning plus so much more in getting prepared for 1-4 competition a year is costly resulting in out of pocket cost as a non- sponsored athlete and has been for a long time.

SPUNQ SPORTS News 11 Year Old Banned From Scoring Touchdowns

Girl Calls Out Dick’s Sporting Goods Provided by CBS Online

Demias Jimerson is so good he’s no longer allowed to score. The 11-year-old Arkansas football prodigy has been slapped with a little-known rule inspired by former Arkansas Razorbacks star Madre Hill, who ran all over teams while playing at the same Wilson Intermediate School years ago. According to Yahoo’s Rivals Blog, the “Madre Hill Rule” limits Jimerson from scoring if he has already scored three touchdowns and his team is ahead by at least 14 points. While schools typically don’t hold back young stars like this, the rule is intended to keep the game fun for everyone. As Sports Grid explains, the rule helps give other players a shot at carrying the ball. “The other players on both teams... Twenty-one are just left out, sort of. It’s all Demias,” WIFL commissioner Terri Bryant told Fox 16. In his extremely well-spoken television interview (which you can see below), Jimerson detailed his priorities: “I’m gonna run hard and bring our team to victory,” said Jimerson. He added, “But God always comes first, before anything, and grades second.”

A 12-year-old girl from Arizona has called out Dick’s Sporting Goods for failing to include female athletes in its 2014 basketball catalog -- and she’s getting plenty of backup on the Web. McKenna Peterson’s letter to the company, which her father later tweeted, drew attention to the lack of gender equality in the ads. “I think that girls should be treated as equally as boys are treated,” she wrote. “I, myself, enjoying playing and watching basketball, WOMENS basketball.” The self-proclaimed “Fabulous Basketball Player” has been praised on Twitter for bringing attention to the issue. Although the basketball catalog does include women, they are portrayed in passive or supportive roles: “sitting in the stands” or “mentioned once in the catalog on page 5 for some shoes” or as “cheerleaders on some coupons,” McKenna wrote. “It’s hard enough for girls to break through in this sport as it is, without you guys excluding us from your catalog,” she added. The Petersons say they may take their business elsewhere unless Dick’s resolves to include more women in its advertising; McKenna even named several of her favorite professional women’s basketball players who would fit the bill in the letter.

We pray that they will gain strength and comfort during this most difficult time and in the days ahead.” According to 247Sports.com, Jones is listed at 6-5, 235 pounds and ranked the No. 17 player in the state.

he thing that Derrick Partee loves most about coaching are the relationships that are formed. The chance to hopefully have a positive impact in someone’s life and also seeing a former player and hearing their stories of how he helped them become a better player or more importantly, a better person. “My players and my children inspire me because I want them to try to be the best in what ever they do. That inspires me because I have to be part of that inspiration for them. I have to lead by example and have the drive to be the best also,” he says. “I tell my players that no

He also credits his parents for being the biggest impact on his life. The love, support, assistance they have given to both him and his brother he says can’t be matched by anyone else.

He played high school basketball at the great James Benson Dudley High School. While there he won a state championship his senior year in 1996. “I had some really good teammates, coaches and managers on that team that have all made me a better coach,” he says. He also played at the collegiate level at NC A&T State University from 1996-1999. As a coach, his high school coach David Price helped to pave the way to where he is now, as the Head Coach at Ben L. Smith High School. Partee recognizes that no one can be successful by themselves. He has a long list of individuals to thank including Everette James, Joe Godette, Ken Thompson, Phylis Martin, Russell Woodward, Christine Price and his high school teammates and friends.“ What’s most memorable for Partee are his players in general. Where they went and what they are doing after high school basketball. . Partee began coaching in 1998. While in college a couple of his high school teammates helped him coach an AAU team. That was when the bug bit him. He spent 14 years as JV coach and assistant varsity coach at Dudley under Coach Price. He has coached AAU basketball in a few different organizations such as the Greensboro Warriors, Greensboro Aggies, and Team Felton. He has worked camps all over the country and attended clinics all over the country. This year while leading the Golden Eagles, Partee says he hopes to make an even bigger impression in the basketball community. His over all record as head coach is (30-24). “In our first two years as a staff we have made the state playoffs both years. We have also played in the conference championship game both years,” he says. S
