Royal Benefits Being a Mom • • • •

Royal Privileges (Esther 4-vs-1–14) Additional Scripture Readings: (Proverbs 18-vs-10; 1 Peter 5:7) When you’re in a bad spot, there’s nothing like calling for help from the king. Especially when you’re related. When we trust Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we’re adopted into his royal family. We can call on the protection of the King’s power. • The Bible spells out the royal privilege of the King’s protection all through its pages. Joseph was promoted to a high place in Pharaoh’s courts. The Israelites were miraculously delivered from slavery in Egypt. Daniel saw God close the mouths of lions. Esther persuaded the ruler of her day and saved her people. • While we’re never promised that we’ll be untouched by the evil of our world, we are given the security that God will stand with us through it. God sits by our hospital bed and suffers as we suffer. He stands by us in our doubts without rejecting us. Even in the moments we don’t feel the protection of the King, it is there for us. No matter what circumstances we face, it’s good to know we’re related to the King.

Hannah Autobiography

• •

Hannah Her name means: "Graciousness" or "Favor" Her character: Provoked by another woman's malice, she refused to respond in kind. Instead, she poured out her hurt and sorrow to God, allowing him to vindicate her. Her sorrow: To be taunted and misunderstood. Her joy: To proclaim God's power and goodness, his habit of raising the lowly and humbling the proud. Key Scriptures: 1 Samuel 1:1-2:11; 2:19-21 Her Story It was only fifteen miles, but every year the journey from Ramah, to worship at the tabernacle in Shiloh, seemed longer. At home, Hannah found ways to avoid her husband's second wife, but once in Shiloh there was no escaping her taunts. Hannah felt like a leaky tent in a driving rain, unable to defend herself against the harsh weather of the other woman's heart. Even Elkanah's arm around her provided no shelter. "Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don't you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don't I mean more to you than ten sons? Yes, she has given me children, but it's you I love. Ignore her taunts." How could Hannah make him understand that even the best of men could not erase a woman's longing for children? His attempt to comfort her only sharpened the pain, heightening her sense of isolation. Once inside the tabernacle Hannah stood for a long time, weeping and praying. Her lips moved without making a sound as her heart poured out its grief to God: "O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.“ The priest Eli was used to people coming to Shiloh to celebrate the feasts, eating and drinking more than they should. Watching Hannah from his chair by the doorpost of the temple, he wondered why her shoulders were shaking, her lips moving without making a sound. She must be drunk, he concluded. So he interrupted her silent prayer with a rebuke: "How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine."

• •

"Not so, my lord," Hannah defended herself. "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief." Satisfied by her explanation, Eli blessed her, saying, "May the God of Israel grant your request." Early the next morning, Hannah and Elkanah returned to their home in Ramah, where Hannah at last conceived. Soon she held against her shoulder the tiny child she had yearned for, the son she had dedicated to God. After Samuel was weaned, she took him to Eli at Shiloh. Like Jochebed placing the child Moses into the waters of the Nile as though into God's own hands, she surrendered her child to the priest's care. Eventually Hannah's boy became a prophet and Israel's last judge. His hands anointed both Saul and David as Israel's first kings. Like Sarah and Rachel, Hannah grieved over the children she couldn't have. But unlike them, she took her anguish directly to God. Misunderstood by both her husband and her priest, she could easily have turned her sorrow on herself or others, becoming bitter, hopeless, or vindictive. But instead of merely pitying herself or responding in kind, she poured out her soul to God. And God graciously answered her prayer. Each year Hannah went up to Shiloh and presented Samuel with a little robe she had sewn. And each year, the priest Eli blessed her husband, Elkanah, saying, "May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the Lord." And so Hannah became the mother of three more sons and two daughters. Hannah's great prayer, echoed more than a thousand years later by Mary, the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:46-55), expresses her praise: "My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance…. The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap" (1 Samuel 2:1, 7-8). Her Promise when God met Hannah at the temple in Shiloh, he not only answered her prayer for a child, he answered her prayer for comfort in her misery. He gave her consolation in her disappointment and strength to face her situation. Scripture does not say that she went away sure she would bear a child, but it does make it clear that she went away comforted: "Her face was no longer downcast" (1 Samuel 1:18). What even the love and care of her husband Elkanah could not provide, God could provide.

God is willing to meet us just as he met Hannah. Whatever our distress, whatever hard situations we face, he is willing—more than that, he is eager—to meet our needs and give us his grace and comfort. No other person—not our husband, not our closest friends, not our parents, not our children—can render the relief, support, and encouragement that our God has waiting for us.

Smith, founder, chairman and chief executive of Vista Equity Partners (No. 1 on the BE 100s Private Equity list with $14 billion in capital under management), just landed on the Forbes 400—the magazine’s annual list of the 400 richest Americans. Smith amassed a $2.5 billion fortune mostly through business software and technology companies. He is the second-wealthiest African American to make the list after Oprah Winfrey (who is worth $3 billion), and also tops Michael Jordan’s placement on the list. Smith places at the 268th spot. Heralded as a private equity titan and Wall Street wiz, Smith started his early life out as a computer geek and even interned at Bell Labs. Although he worked in the STEM field for some time after earning a degree in chemical engineering from Cornell, the financial world beckoned. He attended Columbia Business School and ended up at Goldman Sachs. He served as the co-chief of the investment banking division. After Goldman Sachs’ IPO, Smith founded Vista Equity Partners in 2000, investing in technology companies. In 2013, Black Enterprise named the firm BE100s Financial Services Company of the Year, and Smith one of the Most Powerful Blacks on Wall Street. Smith made a shrewd move in acquiring Sun quest Information Systems Inc. for a relative bargain price of $327 million—$200 million in equity and $127 million in debt. Sun quest was experiencing some financial difficulty prior to the acquisition. Vista managed to increase Sun quest's revenue shares in just two years. Smith has attributed his firm’s success to proprietary operating principles rather than “guessing” or “stock picking.” Vista’s portfolio includes not only tech companies but those in the property and casualty insurance and advertising industries. Vista Equity Partners is valued at $4.3 billion and has $14 billion in cumulative capital commitments. The company recently announced its plans to acquire Solera Holdings Inc. for $6.5 billion. Vista has presence nationwide with offices in San Francisco, Austin, and Chicago.

Artist of the Month Tedashii!

10

“I wanted to do college ministry…being a part of Christian Hip Hop was never the plan,” he reveals. While Tedashii’s robust stature and delivery on the mic catch the attention of most, his gentle spirit hints at an even deeper story behind the man and the music. Born in East Texas, Tedashii “TDot” Anderson was raised to be very familyoriented, respectful and appreciative, but embracing the latter was often difficult in light of the economic conditions his family faced. Television became an escape for him as he admits to wanting a different life, “I really wanted to get away,” Tedashii recalls. He envied the Huxtable lifestyle and eloquence and desired the urbanized southern version, topped off with a candy-painted car on 26's. His ambitions would soon mirror those he stayed up watching on television and read about in books. In high school, he joined the band to play jazz, studied black history, reveled in poetry, endeavored to become a renaissance man, and even idolized Ted Kopple. Tedashii remembers being different than his peers in his vast interests, but as expected for a Texas boy, Samoan at that, he also played football. By most standards, he was a well-rounded, good person--most, but not all. Tedashii was given a wake-up call in college after being confronted by a student who overheard him using profanity. “He told me that I was a sinner and basically shared the Gospel with me that day.” Some time later, after going to a Christian event on campus and seeing hundreds of urban students authentically worship God, he received Jesus and found new life in Christ instead of Hollywood. His newfound family in Christ encouraged him to use his rapping skills, honed since being challenged to freestyle in high school, to glorify God. And while his first attempt to do so wasn’t well-received, he was recognized as “different” by his peers again, but now it was because of his faith. After being introduced to Lecrae, rooming with both him and Sho Baraka and later being featured on several tracks from Real Talk and the 116 Clique Compilation, Tedashii was exhorted to commit to ministry through music. “I wanted to do college ministry…being a part of Christian Hip Hop was never the plan,” he reveals. But with encouragement from his peers, along with releasing his debut album Kingdom People and recognizing his ability to reach people with his raw, southern style, he has since needed no motivation to continue spitting the Gospel.

How to succeed in your Business People ask me all the time what is the one piece of advice I have for starting a business. My answer is that there is no one answer to that question as there are many things that make a business successful. Looking back on my career, here are five that I have found to be the most valuable and have helped me gain the most traction. Do Your Homework One thing I stress everywhere I go is the absolute necessity to understand your market. That means studying your competitors, the condition of your market, where the market is going, the average lifetime value of your product, EVERYTHING. The ironic thing is, the moment you think you know everything you realize how much there still is to learn. The greatest entrepreneurs are those who continue learning no matter how great a level of success they have achieved. This concept I call “doing your homework”, and it is something that has helped me to adapt when FUBU was hitting the valley of its seven year cycle. It was from this studying and doing my homework that gave me the foresight to make the move into acquiring other brands like Willie Esco and Coogi so we could keep the wheel turning and maintain our revenue stream. Stay Singular in Your Focus Regardless of what your particular niche may be, you need to stay singular in your focus. You need to understand that just because you are successful in one market does not be you will be successful in another. I learned that in a rather abrupt lesson from Phil Knight when I called him up one day asking him if he was getting into the hip-hop market. He very clearly stated to me that the sports market was his focus and that he had just hit the tip of the iceberg… then he hung up on me.

• • •

• • • •

• •

That is the kind of focus you need to have and why Nike has achieved such a high level of success. Your Competition Is There and You Don’t Even Know It One piece of advice I give to entrepreneurs all the time is that someone else is always working to take their place. They also need to know that however hot their brand may be at a given time, there will always be a new brand to come in from a different angle to take their place. I think this is very important as it keeps an entrepreneur on his or her toes. It sure keeps me on my toes! Understanding Your Distribution Model I always say distribution is key. No matter what you create, if you have no eyeballs on it and nobody is purchasing it, what do you have? You need to know your lane, whatever that lane may be, and take advantage of the full level of distribution within that niche. You need to be narrow and deep, never wide and shallow. Find your customer base and get respect from them. If they believe in you, they will continue to buy from you. If you try to be everything to everyone you will spread yourself too thin and you will have no loyal customer base. Your Weakness Is Your Greatest our Strength In Disguise Lastly, and most importantly, I have been telling entrepreneurs for a very long time that their greatest strengths lie in not what they have but what they don’t have. It is all a matter of perception as what you may think is your biggest weakness can actually be the spark to the fire that fuels your success. This is the entire principle behind my upcoming book The Power Of Broke. By Daymond John(Self-Made Millionaire)

The Prophet Elisha Autobiography

15

Elisha a Man of the Double Portion ANOINTING! • • •

• •

• •

Elisha His name means: "My God Saves" His work: Elisha was Elijah's successor. A prophet and miracle worker active in the northern kingdom from 850-800 BC, his ministry involved rebuking Israel's unfaithful kings, inaugurating a new royal line, and helping to sustain the faith of all those in Israel who believed in God. His character: Elisha renounced the life he could have had as the son of a wealthy man to live as a prophet. His single-hearted devotion to the Lord made him a spiritual leader whose integrity, vision, and courage helped sustain the people's faith in God. His sorrow: He wept when given a vision of how much Israel would suffer at the hands of the king of Syria. His triumph: Elisha asked to inherit a double portion of Elijah's spirit, the portion reserved for the eldest son, and received it. Key Scriptures: 1 Kings 19:19-21; 2 Kings 2:1-14; 4:1-7; 6:8-23; 13:21 A Look at the Man Elisha was a man who was never deceived by appearances. Perhaps this is what it means to be a prophet—to have a vision that extends beyond what is merely apparent, to be able to penetrate a set of circumstances to perceive what is really going on. Because of his relationship with God, Elisha was able to live with a keen ” of life. He understood that what happens in heaven awareness of both the natural and supernatural aspects affects life on earth and that what we do on earth has ramifications in heaven. When Elisha learned that his city was surrounded, he showed no sign of terror as an ordinary man might have. Instead, he looked up and saw the hills covered with horses and chariots of fire; the army of heaven stood ready to protect him. In the midst of what looked like certain defeat, his ability to perceive reality enabled him to remain calm and confident. Rather than cowering or despairing, he was able to encourage his servant with the truth, saying, "Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." Elisha's enemies, on the other hand, were at a keen disadvantage. Blinded by an act of God, they became fools—prisoners of the man they had meant to take captive. The truth about their ridiculous predicament only became apparent once Elisha asked God to open their eyes again. Seeing and not seeing—believing and not believing—these are the connections that determine our understanding of the world around us. As we wait for understanding concerning our own difficulties or for the grace to endure without fully understanding them, we can recall Elisha's words: "Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." Reflect On: 2 Kings 2:5–15 Praise God: For speaking to us through his prophets. Offer Thanks: For the ways God has challenged you through others. Confess: Any failure to respond to God’s corrective word. Ask God: For a greater sense of what it means to live every day for his kingdom.

On the Giving Side! By Apostle Trina Davis(Cont) •

How wonderful to receive a gift from a friend. It always stirs a warm feeling within; And as happy as we are with the gift, It’s the thought behind it that gives us the lift, Making us so very keenly aware There still are those who truly care. But a more wonderful thing, I must confide, Is when we are on the giving side. Nothing compares with what comes our way, As we reach out a hand to others each day. "Give and it shall be given unto you"... This verse in God’s word is surely true. He blesses us richly as we reach out; Teaching us what giving is all about, And we find it’s not hard at all to believe, "It’s better to give than it is to receive. " Lord, as we live each day and in you abide, Keep us, I pray, on the giving side. "Freely ye have received, freely give" (Matt. 10:8)

Prayer For Our Children Freedom By Apostle Teyshana Wiley •

I Cast out all brujeria witchcraft, sorcery, demonic forces, phantom, anarchy, doom, destruction, demonic relics, and unscriptural prayers in the name of Jesus. All yokes, oxen, shackle, cord, habits, addiction, chains, and cycles are destroyed now in the name of Jesus. I cast imprisonment, suicide, murder, depression, fighting, gossip, anger, rejection, abandonment, disappointments, neglect, fatherless, motherless, hurt, pain, abuse of all kinds and format, rage, wrath, tyranny, lusts of the mind, and flesh in the name of Jesus. I send it all to the dry places in the name of Jesus. No weapon form against our children shall prosper in the name of Jesus.

The Lord alone is our children refuge, and place of safety in him we trust in the name of Jesus. I plead the blood of Jesus over our children from the crown of their heads, to the soul of their feet. I Command, Decree, and Prophesy over our youth and children to be ignited for revival in their spirits in the name of Jesus. Lord, come to their rooms on tonight, and call them by name like you did the Prophet Samuel. Give them the revelations, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding like you did with the Prophet Daniel. Arise up leaders just like you did with King Josiah. Allow them to be warriors and conquerors in the spirit just like King David. Allow them to worship you in spirit and truth. Allow them to inherit the land just like Joshua, and Caleb. I Command every Angelic Angel to watch over our children, and keep them as the apple of your eye Oh God. We know you are visiting some of them in their sleep now, like you did King Solomon. Not one word will fall to the ground, and we shall suddenly see a quick change in our children in Jesus name. The Apostolic Anointing is releasing a Ripple Effect in the Earth now. It is DONE, Amen. Now WATCH what God is about to do for your children, my God. Whoooh Jesus Hallelujah!!!

Devotion for Married Couples Straight Talk!

“Whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.” (Mark 4-vs-22) Straight talk is important in marriage. It is easy to distort the truth when we are doing the “dating dance” and wooing one another. We parade partial truths in hopes that some of our deeper secrets will stay hidden. The tipping point comes when we enter into the deeper relational stage we call “engagement.” An older term for that was betrothal, which literally means giving our troth, an earlier variation on the word truth. In other words, dating is playing games, but engagement, or betrothal, means we are now committing to truth. We are choosing to reveal more of ourselves so we can see each other wholly and love each other in wholesome ways.

29

• The outcome of a good engagement is marriage, when, as Adam and Eve discovered, we find ways to be “naked and not ashamed” before each other. This is more than just undressing; it is the psychological honesty that allows us to meet one another in truth, peering into each other’s souls without embarrassment or threat of one of us walking away. • There may be times when too much honesty harms a good relationship, but it is hard to know how secrets can be part of a healthy relationship. God does not turn away from us when the secrets of our hearts are brought into the healing light of divine grace. Nor should we turn from those who trust us with the intimacy of private faults, disappointments, needs and dreams. As Jesus reminds us in this brief parable about a lamp, “Whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.” Especially in marriage. • Let’s Talk • How well do we know each other? How much can we entrust to one another? How are knowing and trusting related? • What do we know about each other that no one else knows? How have we used that secret information in healthy and nurturing ways? How have we abused it? • Are there secrets we keep from one another? Do we need to become more open with one another? How might we do that? • By Wayne Brouwer
