Couture + Compassion

A

very Gathercole event is when fashion and compassion walk the runway together. And this is what fashion mavericks are looking forward to in Rocky Gathercole’s avant-garde event this July. ‘Rock The Runway’ is a passion project of Rocky Gathercole, a Filipino-American AvantGardiste and Hollywood couturier known for dressing big names in the music industry. His list of clientele includes Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, Gwen Stefani, to name a few. In the recent Cannes Festival, his deviant yet modish piece for Paris Hilton landed her in the gala’s Best-Dressed list. More than being linked to these A-list artists, Rocky is shaking the fashion sphere with his outlandishness, creative vision, and vigor to be divergent. What others perceive as bizarre, Rocky sees as unorthodox. After all, being different is innate to him. “People who review most of my fashion shows say that my pieces are show stoppers,” Rocky shared. And indeed, they are! Each couture piece exhibits surreal brilliance. Using ‘non-fabric’ materials such as PVCs, wires, office supplies, and whatnots, Rocky’s imagination opens wide and his hands turn into magic wands that transform the ordinary to extraordinary.

However, opulence and success did not come to Rocky at the drop of a hat. But every bit of step he took pushed him to become a distinct Avant-Garde Fashion Designer to date. “When I got into this business, I loved it, and I made sure that I’m doing the best I can to stay in the business,” Rocky said when asked if he struggled to get into the fashion industry. His passion and dedication paid off a hundredfold when people started to recognize his inimitable style. As Rocky would say, ‘It’s very Gathercole!’ Amidst the fame and success, Rocky adds that it is his humble beginnings that ground him. His fashion sense was not honed by prestigious fashion institutions but by the school of hard knocks. Living in the streets at a very young age had taught him to survive on his own; to dream, and take risks. “When I left my dad at 14, I tried to find my luck in the streets. I sold, tapsilog on a rolling store. I enjoyed my life. I had no regrets being there.” With a grateful heart, Rocky wants to show that he is not only a designer but a fashion rebel with a cause. ‘Rock The Runway’ is happening on July 28, 2016 at Avalon Hollywood and all net proceeds from the show will go to Bantay Bata, a child-watch program in the Philippines. “Each of us should give back somehow. Whether, it’s for Bantay Bata or for anyone. I’m just

lucky enough to do this for Bantay Bata but I’m sure everybody wants to do it as well,” said Rocky. From being a battered child, a hopeful dreamer, to an eminent Avant-Gardiste, Rocky believes that it’s important to pay it forward; thus, he extends this benevolent opportunity to everyone in North America to help young kids fulfill their dreams through an unconventional fashion affair that best reflects his life and aesthetics. ‘Rock The Runway’ will be a chance for fashion enthusiasts to witness Rocky’s story and fashion philosophy unfold. What’s more, when Rocky says, ‘surprises after surprises’, attendees can expect to have an out-of-the box fashion show experience. The event will also showcase style stations that offer Nail-Art and Flash Tattoos, so everyone can look bold and beautiful on-cam. If passion and fashion are what great designers are made of, it is the marriage of couture and compassion that makes Rocky Gathercole a cut above the rest. t almost seems coincidental, but a new loveteam may just have been born inside the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) house, when Ylona Garciarevealed her feelings to fellow housemate James Bacalla by uttering three simple words: “I like Bailey”. After that, fans began christening Bailey Mayand Ylona by their love team name, “BaiLona”. While they weren’t initially close, the two eventually grew more comfortable around each other during their remaining days inside the house, especially after they recorded the song “Magmahal Muli” and wrapped it up with an adorable high five. Their tandem drew even more interest and potential when Bailey and Ylona starred together in the short film Trending Love. Bailey and Ylona’s innocent ‘puppy love’ proved to be refreshing for TV viewers. The two grew so fond of each other during their stay inside the house that Bailey couldn’t stop gushing over how much joy Ylona brings him. “I like Ylona because I’ve known her longer. I also appreciate how she treats other people and how she treats me. She’s a very nice person. She is really fantastic to be with. We also have a lot in common.” Even Bailey’s dad Matthew May attests to this, sharing that her bubbly personality does indeed make his son happy. “She’s a very good girl,” Matthew adds with a smile. Bailey’s manager Ming Tiñana feels BaiLona will prove to become majorly successful one day. “I believe the BaiLona tandem has the potential to be as big as KathNiel, LizQuen and JaDine one day. Click sila dahil sa chemistry nila. They’re young, they are cute, they are talented at talagang bagay sila. Mestizo si Bailey, tapos morena ’yung isa so nagko-complement sila sa isa’t-isa.” Since exiting the Big Brother House, Bailey and Ylona have been enjoying a stream of projects and endorsements. They have performed on It’s Showtime, and also on the ASAP stage. Bailey and Ylona also had their first official acting break when they joined the cast of the recently-concluded hit teleserye On the Wings of Love, where they played Clark’s cousin Harry Fausto (Bailey) and Leah’s second cousin Audrey Olivar (Ylona), respectively.

The two added more kilig to the show— even James Reid couldn’t resist the BaiLona effect which clearly showed through his reaction that was recorded in the candid video when Ylona put her head on Bailey’s shoulder. “Their connection is real,” Matthew interjects when asked why the BaiLona tandem works. “They are really good friends and they get along really well. Maybe there’s probably more into that but let’s just wait since they’re still young kids.” But in addition to the kilig they give off, both young artists are incredibly talented as well. Aside from their potential in acting, they also fare well in singing and dancing. That’s why when 2016 rolled around, it wasn’t surprising that more projects came in for the pair. For one, Coca-Cola announced BaiLona as one of the three on-screen tandems for its “Taste the Feeling” campaign. Then in February, they were cast in Star Cinema’s upcoming horror thriller film Bloody Crayons. Directed by Quark Henares, this is their first movie, and they will appear in it alongside Jane Oineza, Julia Barretto, Inigo Pascual and Diego Loyzaga. Finally, the two were tapped to interpret a song entry in this year’s Himig Handog songwriting competition. But on top of all this, Bailey and Ylona are also enjoying tremendous support from their fans. Of course, Bailey’s father can’t be more thankful about that. “We see that they have a huge following,” Matthew says. “The public has a great interest in them. I believe they have a good future as a loveteam and individually. I’ve met some of their fans through BaiLona fan parties—I’ve been joining some. I got to know their fans. They are all very hyped and excited. We just thank them because these kids wouldn’t reach the heights that they have so far right now.” At such a young age, Bailey and Ylona truly have the world as their oyster—and it seems that there is no stopping their rise. With both of them being blessed with incredible talent and a strong fan base to boot, it is only a matter of time before they reach the peak of success in the industry.

BAILEY MAY

The

y o B Brit

BY MICHELLE ANGELA OROSA CARAG

A

s if his fate had always been written in the stars, you can say that Bailey May’s journey to stardom can be traced back to that fateful day when his parents met in 1992. Bailey’s British father Matthew and Filipina mother Vanessa met and fell in love aboard the Star Cruises where they both used to perform. Matthew sang in cabaret-type production shows; Vanessa had her own band. After their contracts expired, Matthew followed Vanessa to Cebu, and settled there with her and her family. About a year later, Vanessa got pregnant, and Matthew decided to go abroad again for work. Finally,on August 6, 2002, Vanessa gave birth to Bailey. Matthew and Vanessa tied the knot after Bailey turned two. Right after, Vanessa gave birth to Bailey’s younger sister Maya. After that, Bailey’s parents decided to move to England to have a better life. However, the move proved to be challenging, especially for Bailey, who initially struggled with the language barrier, as he could only speak Cebuano that time. On top of that, the other neighborhood kids

14

wouldn’t play with him either. He was bullied and called “Browny” because he was half-Filipino. What helped Bailey adjust was his love for football, a sport he loved since he was three. He earned a scholarship and played for his school’s football team. He also gained friends. While Bailey had to grow up in a very English setting, Vanessa made sure to keep Filipino traditions and values alive. Matthew and Vanessa also vacationed in the Philippines every three years, so their children would learn to appreciate their Filipino roots. Despite having parents who used to work in entertainment, Bailey originally identified as an athlete more than anything else. Matthew spent years convincing his son to explore his potential as a singer, and one day, the teenager indulged his father by recording a video of him singing Sean Kingston’s hit song, “Beautiful Girls” for their family in the Philippines to see. It didn’t take long before Bailey’s current manager Ming Tiñana took notice of him after watching all of his videos, and encouraged him to try and audition online for Pinoy Big Brother 737. Bailey had made it through the auditions, and his experience inside the Big Brother House proved

to be quite a journey. Bailey has been doing well, career-wise, in the Philippines, but his parents decided they still needed something to fall back on in the future. Vanessa flew back to England to start her business, and took Maya with her so she could go back to school. Meanwhile, Matthew stayed behind in Manila so he could keep an eye on Bailey as he pursues his career in showbiz. Daddy Matt also pursued opportunities of his own, such as joining I Love OPM, a singing search looking for foreigners who can sing songs in Tagalog. Because Bailey has come to earn quite a solid fan base over the past few months, it is safe to say that the young British heartthrob (who his followers say have a striking resemblance to global superstar Justin Bieber) will really enjoy his rise to the top. As part of his preparation in taking on more projects, Bailey plans to undergo acting workshops and Tagalog lessons. And to keep him focused, he takes to heart the most valuable showbiz advice he has ever received so far: “Stay grounded, appreciate all the support that you have and just enjoy showbiz.”

H

er father makes a living as a pathology technical officer. Her mother works as a registered nurse and medical technologist. Given her parents’ strong medical backgrounds, one would think that Ylona Jade Navalle Garcia would follow in their footsteps and pursue a future in medicine. But instead, the beautiful 14-year-old finds herself chasing and fulfilling her dreams in the performing arts. Born to Filipino parents Peter and Carrie Garcia on February 28, 2002, in Sydney, Australia, Ylona and her four siblings grew up in the Land Down Under. “It was fun!” the teenager says. “The environment there is amazing, because everyone is nice. I grew up a very, very proud Filipina.” But Ylona also experienced some bullying. However, she does not hold any grudges and maintaining a very positive outlook on the experience. She explains, “You shouldn’t feel bad about being yourself. If people don’t like it, it’s their loss. I guess that’s what I’ve learned about being bullied. Bullies have insecurities. You shouldn’t be insecure about being yourself, because that makes who you are.” Ylona was about nine years old when she performed in front of people for the very first time. A delicate-looking morena blessed with a big voice, she has performed as front act for a number of Filipino singers who have staged concert tours in Australia, including Martin Nievera, Sarah Geronimo and Bamboo. She has also won several singing competitions, including the 2014 Urban Star Sydney Championship, and the 2015 Fast Track Australian Singing Competition in the Junior Division.

Then in May 2015, the pretty teener flew to Manila in to try out for a slot in Pinoy Big Brother (PBB). While inside the house, she composed the upbeat song, “Win the Fight” with her fellow housemate Jimboy Martin. As a gift, Big Brother let Ylona and Jimboy record the song while they were inside the house. Another piece Ylona was able to record was “Magmahal Muli”, but with Bailey. The song was originally composed and recorded by Sam Milby and Say Alonzo from the first season of Pinoy Big Brother in 2005. But it wasn’t always butterflies and rainbows for Ylona inside the house. Aside from the language barrier, she also had to endure being nominated for eviction several times; but in the end, she made it to second place. Overall, Ylona was very happy with her experience inside the house. “It was amazing,” she gushes happily. “It’s something that I never regret trying out for it teaches you a lot of things about life.”

After the show wrapped up, Ylona expected that she would be flying back home to Australia as soon as possible to continue living the life she left behind there. But little did she know that she was in for a pleasant surprise, because projects started pouring in. Apart from being named as a “MYX Celebrity VJ” for the month of February this year, ABS-CBN’s record label Star Music gifted Ylona with a recording contract for her birthday. Her upcoming debut studio album will be out soon. She also appeared in her first teleserye On the Wings of Love and on other Kapamilya shows. She also appreciates the love that her fans have been giving her, sharing, “What I do in my room, everything they give me—like notes—I always put them up on my wall. I also take pictures with them and thank them for the support because I wouldn’t be here without them. I wouldn’t be successful without them.”

Was there ever any doubt of Vilma Santos’s versatility as an actress? The woman could play lamppost and it would be the most compelling lamppost ever put on film. Here she stars as a bit player, like one of the hundreds she has worked with in countless classic films. Vilma trades in the spotlight to portray an actress background on the fringes. And as all her performances go – manages to create something poignant and exhilarating at the same time.

Five short films. Five renowned directors. Five body parts. One terrifying yet underrated movie. Culling from the tradition of Filipino horror anthologies, Cinco is one of those omnibus films that catches you by surprise. The talent is evident – with names like Enrico Santos, Frasco Mortiz and Cathy GarciaMolina at the helm. Look for the standout shorts “Paa” and “Puso” and see how all films are connected.

Chito Rono is no stranger to controversial subject matter. Having explored the turmoil of Martial Law with “Dekada ’70” and brought female empowerment to the forefront with “Bata, Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa?”, he now dives deep into the dark underbelly of mistresses. Handled with class, elegance and restraint, he puts the women at the forefront and withholds any preachy moral judgement. The result is a far more compelling and human look at people and their love affairs.

Sometimes the most effective romantic movies are the ones that wear its heart on its sleeve. Unabashedly romantic, cheesy and out of this world, Vhong Navarro and Toni Gonzaga turn on the charms in this gem from blockbuster director Cathy Garcia-Molina. Equal parts screwball comedy and supernatural romance, this bubbly romp of a movie will have you in tears – whether through laughs or its most heartfelt scenes.

his is how you write a love story. This is how you capture romance. You go out and get the most enigmatic young couple on screen. You take them to the make-believe outdoors, you throw in a bit of movie magic, and you wait. By the time you realize what’s happening, it’s probably too late. You see him moving closer. You see her leaning in. And they lapse into their roles. The roles they’ve played for the past few years. Lost together in their little bubble. Would it matter if they were only playing it out? Because, at this point, it’s impossible to tell. Fact or fiction, true or false, the real from the reel. There are many versions of the truth, but for this story, there is one we are trying to find out. The one that answers many questions. But, most of all, the one that answers: “Are they or are they not?” Where our story begins is at a studio, halfway through the afternoon on an unremarkable Sunday at the network. Hanging from the ceiling, there are lights and flashes and filters. On the floor is a giant reflector that looks like it could bounce light all the way across space and time. But, right now, it’s bouncing light across a blown up photo of an beautiful countryside, with a permanent sunset floating in the background. Over by the side is a table full of shoes and trinkets and hats, a wardrobe built for spring in the country, an entire army of 50 people—crew, staff, and interns. This only ever happens if it’s these two. This only ever happens for the most popular couple since Gabby and Sharon, Richard and Dawn, John Lloyd and Bea. Never mind the cameras. Look at the poses. Look at the way he hovers around her. Look at how she responds. This is a love affair played right in front of us—for an audience outside of the theaters, for viewers away from the television screens. Right now, someone yells “Quiet on the set,” because everything is about to begin. Everything is about to go into motion. Testing one, two. Lights, camera, and.... 26

About A boy ackstage, Daniel Padilla says something to a well-dressed man by the door. He refuses to wear the green pants with the pink shirt, he explains. The outfit that’s supposed to be on him for the next series of shots. The well-dressed man leaves, paces up and down the corridor, and waits for word from the styling team, which he’d told to get something else. A while later, the man walks back to the studio: “We’ll switch to this,” he says. Looking it over, a pair of brown pants to match the pink, Daniel relents, and goes back into the dressing room to change. Daniel Padilla is known as DJ to his friends, to the people he works with, and to the fans who can’t get enough of him. Daniel is a mouthful, but DJ is easy on the tongue, almost like a term of endearment. He is—with or without his screen partner, Kathryn Bernardo—unnerving. Straightforward, no pretensions—perhaps the coolest young thing to walk into television in recent years. As it stands, Daniel is the Teen King to match Kathryn’s Teen Queen. Together, their reign has gone long past television, and well into film, into magazines, into Facebook and Twitter and Instagram. But Daniel has been showbiz royalty even before he learned how to walk. The Padilla lineage is one that is filled with stars—his father Rommel, uncles Robin and Rustom, his mother is the actress and singer Karla Estrada. He needed no introductions, only opportunities, and when he got them, he got them in spades. He used this to find his own success at such a young age. He has come a long way since he appeared in Gimik 2010. Under his belt are eight movies, seven television shows, three of them with him as the central hero, three certified platinum studio albums, two major concerts at Araneta Coliseum, and various awards and accolades that give him the thumbs up for his acting or singing, or just for being himself. 2014 was a banner year for him, having finished Got 2 Believe with Kathryn, bringing She’s Dating the Gangster to local and international february 2015

She’s asked about her dream date. How she wants to spend the one day that she hopes will happen soon. And what she answers is: “Very girly. Hindi naman yung intimate pero hindi masyadong formal. Gusto ko yung nasa trunk lang kayo ng pick-up tapos magsa-stargazing. Or nandon kayo sa bonfire tapos may mga tents tapos nandon kayo ng mga friends mo, tapos chill lang kayo. Maglalatag lang kayo sa garden or somewhere. Simple things. Gusto ko talaga yung very private, yung wala masyadong tao, wala masyadong involved. This is really what Kathryn wishes. What she really wants before the year ends. Some time away from the city. And she got this wish, except maybe for that last part. She got the sky and the garden and the peace of the countryside. Only, without the stars and the tents and the bonfire. But she did get chickens, bales of hay, and a permanent sunset floating in the background, and also 50 other people to hang out with. The way things are with her schedule at the moment, this is likely the best she can hope for. But Kathryn is happy enough to know that, because uncertainty makes her uncomfortable. What comes next, what’s about to happen, and all the things that need to be done. These are all things that she must know. Has to know. Because there isn’t much time left after everything else. This is a change that she’s had to deal with since she was 16, when she played Mara in the remake of Mara Clara. After she’d gone through being an extra and playing minor roles on major television shows. For her first solo Metro cover, we got seven of the biggest names in fashion to dress her. Now, with a recent appearance in Maalaala Mo Kaya and an album that went gold on its very first day, she’s meTro

only gotten busier since. Still, a girl her age must believe there can be time for other things. “Are you romantic?” she’s asked. “Mahilig ako mag-imagine,” comes the reply. “And do you believe in the one?” “Tinanong mo yan kay DJ?” “He won’t answer.” At this point, there’s a knock on the door and it’s time to head back to the studio. Back to the countryside where they’re supposed to meet, and the question is left unanswered.

Act III

The Promise

“They’re on their way,” someone reported, the words repeated over to the back of the studio. The whole room is charged by a new energy. Are they, or aren’t they? The question is never mouthed out loud, at least until after the shoot ends. There will be time to compare notes later. Kathryn and Daniel come in hand in hand, laughing at a joke known only to them. Something we will never find out. We the people. Us and them. Shoots like this one are never very easy. A picturesque location, rolling hills, farmlands, catching the light of the sun—these are all things that can only be found in remote places. You can’t bring this couple to february 2015

the countryside. Not with the way things are, anyway. You bring the countryside to them instead. They take to the set—the same one they occupied minutes before—but somehow, having both of them in it has changed the air in the room. It is a little warmer. A little more complete. Like all of it now makes sense. Daniel is now less of a professional, less of an actor. Suddenly, he’s just a boy making silly faces in front of a girl, charming his way from frame to frame. Kathryn is just a girl, standing in front of a boy. Her entire face radiant. If anything is to be learned from all of this, it’s that, at the very least, they genuinely like each other. They like each other a lot. “Madali lang katrabaho si Kath. Masarap na siya ‘yung katrabaho mo, dahil syempre kilala mo na rin at di ka na rin mahihirapan,” Daniel says of their working relationship that has lasted for years. They first began working alongside each other in Growing Up, where he stepped up to replace Kathryn’s leading man in the show. They were paired next in Princess and I, where he competed for her atMETRO

tention in a light romantic comedy that showed off their chemistry on screen. In Must Be... Love, their first movie, they first tested the waters of cinema together. Their tandem continued on television in Got 2 Believe—where the audiences rallied behind the friendship of Chichay and Joaquin. They seem to have perfected the rich-girl-poor-boy pairing. They are as natural on camera as a group of friends hanging out on the couch. Off cam, it turns out, they’re pretty much the same. “He’s very chill. Ganon lang sya, parang walang pakialam. Mukha lang siyang walang pakialam pero ang dami nya talagang concerns. Si DJ kasi, kapag ka-work mo sya, gusto nya parati yung sa pag-act niya very realistic. Ayaw nya yung showbiz—ayaw nya yung fake na fake. Siguro yun yung gusto ng mga tao sa kanya,” reveals Kathryn. Everything about them — the awkwardness, the tampuhan, the crisis, the I-will-shout-to-the-world moments. It’s as if they’re just playing themselves. “Totoo sya, yun yung gusto ng tao sa kanya. Tapos yung very manly ang atake nya sa lahat, yung pag-deliver niya ng lines, pag-iyak nya,” she adds. “Alam mo yon, kahit umiyak siya parang astig pa din. There’s something about DJ na kahit ano gawin niya lalaking-lalaki pa rin sya.” It is this manliness that Kathryn finds easy to reciprocate with her own brand of femininity. Not as an ingénue or a manic-pixie-girl, but a quiet, strong-willed woman who knows where her heart lies. With Daniel, there is no confusion in her characterization, her core is set, and therefore it is all too easy for people to rally behind her. Behind them. Like cheering on our secret selves. In the movie She’s Dating the Gangster, it was clear that the two had gone beyond teenybopper romantic comedy, and had ventured into a territory where they were playing parts of themselves, but channeling them into characters that are so convincing you can think of them as your friends. It was the overwhelming success of this movie that led to the announcement about their roles in Pangako Sa ‘ Yo. The role of a lifetime for Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa. Now the role of a lifetime for them. “Masaya kami nung kami yung napili na gumanap sa Pangako Sa ‘ Yo, at nakakakaba—hindi naman madali yung Pangako Sa ‘ Yo. Ma-drama yun eh, hindi naman yung pa-cute cute lang,” he says. Daniel knows he needs to do a good job or else he’ll be compared to the original. “Yun yung feeling, masaya pero nakakakaba pa rin.” Kathryn feels both excitement and hesitation. “Sobrang saya. It’s really an honor sa amin ni DJ kasi ang laki ng project. Binigyan kami ng ganung kalaking chance ng management, sobrang thankful kami.” The next year has been mapped out for the two—a movie first, and then they start with principal photography on Pangako Sa ‘ Yo. How this version plays out remains to be seen. Her Ina Macaspac, his Angelo Buenavista, will they stand the test of time? Will they defy the odds—the clamor of the public, the Instagram generation, the comparisons, the competition, the rumors, and almost every other thing that will try to keep them apart? Perhaps the answer to these, like the answer to question we’ve kept asking, lies in the way he holds her. The way he massages her foot when she removes her heels to give her tired feet a break. The way he takes her hand when she’s cold. There is much to see from a simple glance from Kathryn to Daniel, from Daniel to Kathryn. But this is something we can’t ever know. They’re in their own little world. Having a make-believe date in a pretend countryside with a permanent sunset floating in the background. They’re acting like teenagers. They’re acting like we thought they would. They’re all too natural but what they do is they play they roles and we believe. Want to believe. And right now what we do is we hope. That somewhere between all the fantasy, all the scripts, all the movie magic, there’s something that’s no longer make-believe. f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 5 TFC ALL ACCESS

Smoothie party Sip away those excess pounds! Text and recipes by CECILLE ESPERANZA

Photography by PAULO VALENZUELA | Styling by TINA CONCEPCION-dIAZ

Shake up your breakfast or mid-afternoon snack with nutrient-packed smoothies to help keep you full until your next meal. Here are some prep tips…

Freeze your fruit. If you want

to make smoothies regularly, it’s a great idea to store some fruits in the freezer. Not only will it retain the fruits’ nutritional value and flavor, but it will also instantly chill your smoothie—no need to add ice!

Be creative. Add different flavors

to your basic smoothie recipe. Add a spoonful of cocoa powder, cinnamon,

grated nutmeg or vanilla essence before blending, or give your smoothie some texture with a sprinkle of flaxseeds, toasted chopped nuts or whole oats. It will improve the taste and and keep you feeling full longer.

Mix and match. The natural

sweetness of fruit blends well with lots of vegetables and makes a delicious and super-nutritious drink. Try to make a green detox smoothie using coconut water, grated apple, kiwi, banana and spinach. Other vegetables that work well are grated beetroot or carrot, kale, tomatoes and avocados.

his love team started to blossom right after young actor-singer Elmo Magalona, 21, decided to switch TV networks and found himself waltzing right into the arms of charming debutant and teen actress Janella Salvador. As it stands, with all the anticipation surrounding them, ElNella could well be this year’s breakout loveteam.

The Next Leading Man

Elmo Moses Arroyo Magalona followed in the footsteps of his father, the late rap artist Francis Magalona (or, more popularly, Francis M) when he ventured into show business not only as an actor but as a singer as well. His family—mother Pia and siblings Unna, Nico, Maxene, Frank, Saab, Arkin and Clara—is no stranger to the

limelight. While all eyes turned to the family when patriarch Francis M died of cancer in March 2009, it was the family’s strength and generous amount of talent that captured the continuing interest of the public. Elmo’s first showbiz experience happened as a six-month-old baby featured on the cover of his father’s “Freeman” (1995) album. He went

During their Japan shoot, Janella kept their supporters updated with what was going on by posting photos on her Instagram account using the hashtag #TeamBFY (Born For You). Although they were working, Elmo and Janella had a lot of fun since it was still the winter season when they flew there and they got to play in the snow. They also got to see the famous Mt. Fuji with its snow-capped cone. On one of her photos, Janella wrote the following caption: “Feels like a dream, also feels like i need to be put in an oven soon before i turn into an ice cube.”

on to appear with the Master Rapper for his first-ever TV commercial for a noodle brand, and eventually found himself singing and dancing like a true blue pop star on the defunct GMA Sunday noontime show Party Pilipinas. Elmo then starred in TV shows like Bantatay and Kaya ng Powers and the drama series Villa Quintana and More Than Words. Then in a surprise move, Elmo officially transferred from GMA 7 to ABS-CBN in November 2015. “Hindi ko naman po iniwan ‘yung five years na experience ko, na binigay sa akin ng GMA. ‘Yun po ang nag-mold sa akin, hindi naman po ako pinabayaan,” Elmo said in an interview, adding he hoped his late father would approve. “Gusto ko lang sabihin kay Papa na I’m following my dreams and I hope that he supports me also. I hope he’s proud of what I’ve done,” he said.

Her story: Pretty Young Charmer

Let us put this way: Janella Salvador is the next big thing. Her pretty face, charming ways, sweet smile and surprisingly superb vocal chops are potent enough to captivate the fans and earn her a place in the industry. She seems to have inherited the best of her musician parents Jenine Desiderio and Juan Miguel Salvador’s traits and talents. Janella first entered the public’s consciousness as Nikki, the Taglishspeaking daughter of Sir Chief (Richard Yap), on the hit daytime series Be Careful With My Heart. Janella showed up for a go-see with then Star Magic head Johnny

Manahan, who advised her to check out an ongoing audition on that very same day. Be Careful With My Heart went on to successfully air for two years. The show earned Janella memorable recognitions such as Best Female New TV Personality at the 2013 PMPC Star Awards for Television, Pop Breakthrough Star at the ASAP Pop Viewers Choice Awards, and Female Emerging Star at the 2014 Yahoo! Celebrity Awards. ABS-CBN eventually gave Janella her very own show entitled Oh My G! a toprating show about a teenage girl who could talk to God, and took over the timeslot that Be Careful With My Heart left when it ended. Janella also gets to showcase her singing prowess on ASAP every Sunday. Her Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs entry “Mahal Kita Pero” was awarded as third best festival song. The teen star’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) debut movie Haunted Mansion, costarring with Marlo Mortel and Jerome Ponce, was the third highest top-grosser in the recent film fest.

Born For Each Other?

Elmo’s arrival in ABS-CBN heralds changes in Janella’s career. As soon as it was made official in November 2015 that Elmo is now a Kapamilya, it was simultaneously announced that he will be paired with the actress for the TV series Born for You, a Dreamscape production. The network bosses thought it would be a good idea to pair Elmo and Janella because of their musical backgrounds. It does seem tantalizing to put together a singer-actor, the son of Francis M, and the daughter of a theater great Jenine Desiderio and band musician

#ElNella had a lot of kilig bonding moments while they were in Japan. Their easy chemistry comes from the fact that they have similar backgrounds—both are showbiz royalty—and they are pretty close in age (Janella just turned 18, while Elmo is 21). In an interview with the entertainment website push.com, Elmo said of his Born For You co-star: “She’s bubbly and very energetic, super easy to work with.”

Juan Miguel Salvador, for not only are Elmo and Janella both performers— they both come from a showbiz lineage. Their common ground could well be their tandem’s strength. “It’s cool that we come from a family of musicians. Janella is bubbly, very easy to work with and very energetic. That’s why I am really excited to work with her,” Elmo says. Janella was equally excited by the prospect of working with Elmo. “When I saw Elmo, I felt good because I will get to work with someone fresh since we haven’t worked before. I’m excited with the music angle in our teleserye because our parents are musical people,” the young actress shares.

Born For You is a romantic television series, under the helm of director Onat Diaz. As of press time, Elmo and Janella had just come from Japan to shoot some scenes. Prior to shooting Born For You, Elmo and Janella were paired on Wansapanataym Presents: Christmas Witch. The small-screen outing served as a warm-up for their bigger teleserye project. The two had workshops and bonding sessions so they could get to know each other better and beyond their first impressions of each other. Janella got candid about Elmo. “My first impression of him? He is quiet—and sleepy,” she laughed, adding that Elmo looked sleepy when they were first introduced. “I think he is a really nice guy and a gentleman. I find it easy to converse with him. We’re both introverts, so we kinda connected” she said. Elmo is keen on making screen magic with Janella without compromising authenticity. “We won’t fake anything,” Elmo told The Philippine Star. tandem of Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz for inspiration. “They don’t have to have a relationship outside of work for them to work in front of the camera. It’s just inspiring. Why can’t new teams do the same thing?” he mused. There may be zero romance between Elmo and Janella right now, but isn’t it a wonder that the two crossed paths despite initially belonging to different networks, despite coming from respective successful loveteams, and despite not belonging yet to the same circle of friends in the same industry? As they say, no circumstances can ever stop unseen forces from bringing two people together if they were really meant to be. It looks like destiny has a grand, memorable and enchanted plan for Elmo and Janella. We all just have to wait and see as it unfolds right before our very eyes.
