HIP HOP ICON REV RUN ON BEING AT-RISK FOR DIABETES:
Make Small Steps for Big Changes H
ip Hop legend Rev Run has been known as many things: music icon, Reverend, family man, and reality TV star, but what people don’t know is that he’s at-risk of diabetes—just like millions of Americans. According to a recent study, Filipino Americans had the second highest diabetes prevalence and incidence among all ethnic groups, including minorities traditionally considered high risk.1 “It wasn’t until later in life that I learned I have several diabetes risk factors,” said Rev Run. “My dad had type 2 diabetes. I’m older than 45, and I’m African American. That’s why I joined Novo Nordisk on Ask.Screen.Know.® I realized it’s my calling to help keep people healthy, wealthy and wise. It starts with taking the quick Diabetes Risk Factor Assessment on AskScreenKnow. com and encouraging loved ones to do the same.”
Common risk factors include having a family history of the disease, being a member of certain ethnic groups, being overweight, lacking physical activity, and having diabetes while pregnant. “The earlier you know your risk factors, the earlier you can do something about it,” said Jeannette Jordan, a Certified Diabetes Educator. “If you have 1 or more of the risk factors, ask a health care professional about being screened for type 2 diabetes.” “It’s not as scary as it sounds. I found out I’m at risk so I talked to my doctor and got screened,” said Rev Run. “I don’t have diabetes, but I’m taking small steps for big changes. I eat better, exercise more, and get screened every year.” AskScreenKnow.com offers additional free resources, including a “Just Ask: Questions for Your Doctor” for your next visit and “Recipes for Healthy Living.” References: 1. ou’ve heard of them, for sure. But you do want to see more of them, definitely.
And they’re slowly, but surely, inching their way towards the limelight. Whether they’ve sworn off showbiz until school is done, or they’ve found their niche in the nonmainstream scene, we’re thanking their public Instagram accounts for allowing us to stalk them. Here are the five girls we’re loving so far.
Daughter of Marjorie Barretto and Dennis Padilla, Claudia’s parents insist that she focus on her studies first. In the meantime, the teenage beauty’s already made quiet debuts on magazine covers and a handful of endorsements. Why you should check her out: She’s not your typical pretty face plus she’s got athletic moves to boot. While she’s into the usual ~girly~ things like fashion, dressing up, and all, she’s a pro in her school’s football team.

On this list, she’s probably heard of more frequently, after all, she is the sibling of swoon-worthy James Reid. Why you should check her out: Aside from her stunning looks, she’s a gym rat as well, and with several brothers in their brood, we can tell she’s probably “one of the boys,” too. You’ve most probably seen her in fashion shows, either on the prestigious front row, or walking the runways herself. With her baby face but tall stature, she’s most likely caught your attention. She also just happens to be the 20-year-old daughter of good-looking parents, John Estrada and Janice de Belen. Why you should check her out: She’s only 20 but already holds a lot of promise. Aside from her modeling chops, she’s studying Arts Management, and we’re patiently waiting for what she has yet to create or curate.
ANGELINA MONTANO (112K followers @angelinaisabele)
LOU MUÑOZ (17.4K followers @lavidalouca)
She looks sooo much like her mom and they could easily pass off as sisters. Angelina and her mother, Sunshine Cruz, share the same pale complexion, fresh look, and demure disposition. We’re also envious of their cool sister-barkada relationship!
She was famous for being mistaken as the doppelgänger of her famous sister, that is, until it became clear to us that she’s Arci’s ate.
Why you should check her out: Young as she is, Angelina has yet to decide what she wants to do after school. She seems to have a penchant for the arts (her parents caught her drawing at age 2!) and her curated Instagram account is a testament of her creative talents.
Why you should check her out: The model has a striking resemblance to her baby sister, but at the same time, has an exotic look of her own that deserves just as much airtime.

Adobo
Why this beloved dish is a national icon By Amy A. Uy Photography by Paulo Valenzuela | Recipes by nancy Dizon-eDralin and cecille esPeranza Food styling by nancy Dizon-eDralin | Set styling by angelique castro
dobo has been our de facto Pambansang Ulam for the longest time. It is the dish we are best known for, with entire cookbooks devoted to it. Author Monina A. Mercado in her essay “The Geography of the Filipino Stomach” in the book The Culinary Culture of the Philippines, declared that adobo must be our national dish. Adobo Queen Nancy Reyes-Lumen took her crusade on CNN Philippines in 2015, pointing out how every Filipino is familiar with adobo and knows how to cook it, and that therefore it deserves our vote. Food writer Doreen G. Fernandez, in Tikim: Essays on Philippine Food and Culture, observed that adobo was “called the national dish because it is best known to readers of cookbooks and to foreigners.” Why, then, has official recognition eluded adobo? The matter was even debated in Congress when House Bill 3926 was filed in 2014, naming it as one of our national symbols. That bill, by the way, has not yet been passed into law. Adobo’s origins are often
A
questioned, perhaps because of its Spanish name. But the facts are clear. Adobo has existed in various forms (squid, kangkong, game) even before Ferdinand Magellan set foot in the Philippines, wrote Fernandez in her book Palayok. Because they saw its similarities to the Spanish-Mexican adobo, the colonizers assigned it the same name. Food historian Raymond Sokolov affirms, “Filipino adobo stands by itself, fully formed and always distinct from the adobo dishes of Mexico and Spain.” Unlike Spain and Mexico’s adobado (pork cooked in wine as the pickling ingredient), our adobo is cooked with vinegar, not wine, which gives it its distinct flavor, acts as a meat tenderizer and a preservative, significant in places without refrigeration. Our adobo is the end result of braising or stewing any ingredient—meat, poultry, seafood, vegetables, even game, mole crickets or balut—in vinegar and garlic. To this, soy sauce, salt, bay leaf and black peppercorns can be added. This unfussy approach has challenged us to constantly
tweak the dish and put our own unique stamp on it. No two adobos are exactly alike. Its versatility has spawned countless regional takes as the basic flavors meld quite easily with a range of ingredients: soy sauce, coconut milk, certain fruits, other spices, depending on what is available or in season in a particular locale. Bicol has adobo sa gata, the Visayas has its humba, Batangas has adobong baka, and then there’s adobong puti, adobo sa pula, adobong dilaw and more. Still, to a Filipino, an adobo is an adobo is an adobo. Whether it’s adobong kangkong (swamp cabbage) shared by a family in the countryside or garlicky CPA (Chicken Pork Adobo) with its unmistakable aroma wafting through any Filipino home across the globe, no other dish gives away our proudly Pinoy selves so easily and openly by its mere presence. So when pressed to choose a single dish that’s worthy of the coveted title Pambansang Ulam, stand up for the one which unites us in our diversity while bringing out the best in each of us. Adobo deserves our vote.

A vote for
Adobong Humba
In Nora Daza’s A Culinary Life, humba is also hong ba, said to be of Chinese origin because of the use of tausi (black beans) and the additional syllable “ba,” which is Chinese for pork. But in Samar and Leyte, humba is kasim (pork shoulder) cooked adobo-style and to which tausi or tajure (fermented soybean paste) are added. In this recipe, pata (pork hock) is first boiled in a small amount of water till the fat turns to oil and the meat, a shade brown. It is then marinated in calamansi juice, Datu Puti Oyster Sauce, Datu Puti Soy Sauce and Datu Puti Vinegar. Pineapple juice, brown sugar and star anise add sweetness. Tausi is tossed in, along with saba banana slices, banana blossoms and quail eggs. The result is an indulgent, glistening, melt-in-your-mouth adobo.

Adobo sa Gata
While the more popular dish is adobong manok sa gata (chicken adobo with coconut milk), liempo or pork belly will do just as nicely. The trick is to cook and simmer the meat in good quality suka like Datu Puti Vinegar, then mix in Datu Puti Soy Sauce before adding gata (coconut milk) and chili for spice. This is the way folks in Bicol and Southern Luzon have made adobo their own. Honesto C. General, in his book The Coconut Cookery of Bicol, writes that a Bicolano would first choose a laya (fully-mature coconut) to grate using a lukadon (old-fashioned stationary grater), then press the grated coconut for its velvety gata. It is the gata that finishes the dish when it comes to a rolling boil so that it turns creamy, and the pork, fork tender.

Adobong Baka
Batangas is the home of high-quality beef, the star of the achuete-spiced Batangas adobo. Proud BatangueĂąa Nora Daza shared her treasured Batangas adobo recipe in her books, fearing that the dish would be forgotten now that it is no longer cooked as often. Her recipe calls for beef chunks, beef liver and heart, but it also shows how you can creatively use bulalo. Beef shanks are first pan-fried in annatto oil till golden to seal in the juices then transferred to a pot where the meat is given a good dousing of Datu Puti Vinegar, Datu Puti Soy Sauce, water, along with lots of garlic and spices. The vinegar works to soften the meat while simmering for one hour, then it is oven-baked till delicately tender.

Pininyahang Adobo
Piña or pineapple figures in many adobo recipes, including an old one traced by food writer and historian Felice Prudente Sta. Maria to the peaceful era just before World War II. This is Cerdo Adobado con Piña (marinated pork in pineapple) that she said used pineapple juice in lieu of vinegar, with brown sugar added for taste and coloring. The abundance of pineapples in our country— Bukidnon in Mindanao is hailed as “The Pineapple Capital of the World”—allows us to use both the fruit and its juice year-round, and is reflected in this perfectly sweet-salty-sour adobo. The chicken first soaks in a Datu Puti Vinegar and Datu Puti Soy Sauce marinade before it is simmered then fried and cooked further with the marinade. Pineapple tidbits brighten up this sweet adobo.

Spicy Adobo Summer Vegetables
Summer ushers in a bountiful harvest of nutrient-packed vegetables and a hankering for fresh, light fare. We can’t go wrong with this kaleidoscopic medley of okra, carrots, cauliflower, sitaw (long beans), eggplant and cherry tomatoes bathed in a spicy adobo sauce. Temperatures soar as a hot adobo sauce of Datu Puti Soy Sauce and Datu Puti Vinegar is gently simmered and spiked with labuyo (red chili peppers), then thickened with cornstarch slurry, making these homespun sautéed vegetables a little more special. Fresh shrimps round up this dish and make this veggie adobo irresistibly red-hot.

Pinoy Millennial Speak
101
Pak! Pak! Ganern! BY MARK ANICAS
W
e hear them every day, everywhere, anytime. Back then, when we first had a cellphone, we like to shorten message; alam mo naman, ‘yon ang sikat (I use “sikat” because trending was not a ~trend~ yet that time). We type “tnx” as replacement for “Thanks,” “d2 na me” instead of “Andito na ako,” and “Bk8” instead of “Bakit.” Oh dear, feeling nostalgic yet? I should know. Don’t worry, you can always send a text to your tita if you want to be reminded of those times. (Hi tita!) Indeed, time passes so quickly. We now live in a world where people are back again with “full texting” – of course, with proper punctuations, capitalization, and not to forget the emojis. (Salamat sa mga katutubong makata because we are finally becoming more cautious again on these things) If before, we shorten messages, now, people are replacing words with what we call “Millennial Speak.” HUGOT Who doesn’t know about this? Everyone does. Nevertheless, I’ll add it since I am talking about millennial words here. Hugot, when translated in English is “draw out”, is said when someone is telling something deep, particularly at times when the subject is love. ” HUGOT! EDI WOW The origin of this phrase is not clearly known but it is usually used to stop or end a conversation. The phrase started on social media but it peaked when Vice Ganda had been frequently using it on It’s Showtime. No wonder people caught on so quickly. So next time you want to stop someone’s bragging, just say “Edi Wow!”
BEH A Gay lingo (language) word which means baby, bae, babe. This term was used before as a term of endearment for the better half but now, it is merely a generic name for everyone. Tip: Add this word to whatever you say when you’re not sure of something or when you forget someone’s name. Actually, pwede ring gamitin kay ~crush~ to make the situation lighter. “BEH, Anong oras na? Oras na ba para maging tayo?” PAK GANERN A Gay linggo phrase that originated from “Tumpak” which means right and “Ganun” which means “like that.” So if we are to directly translate “Pak Ganern” in English, it means “Right! Like that!” To use this millennial phrase, just add it to the end of your sentence -- must be in joyful, proud, and in full energy way. Di’ba, ang ganda ng kilay ko? Pak Ganern! Pak Ganern! DON’T ME Don’t Me springs from its direct Filipino translation. While “don’t” means “huwag,” “me” means “ako,” making it huwag ako in Filipino. This phrase is being used / said when someone seems to be lying or making another believe something that is OBVIOUSLY not real. One rule: when using this, you have to enhance your sarcastic skills. “Ang ganda naman niyan.” “Ako gumawa niyan.” “Don’t Me, bes!”

The result? “ASAP Live in New York” with 50 top talents from the Philippines and in the U.S., plus select members of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Gerard Salonga, sold out Barclays Center – an unprecedented feat for Filipinos in the U.S. who came in full force to represent at the event. “ASAP Live in New York was a dream and realizing it didn’t happen overnight,”

said ABS-CBN Global Events Business Unit Head Ricky Resurreccion. “It is a huge testament to the unswerving commitment of our company leaders, the ASAP team and TFC in North America that we all came together to do this for the Filipinos overseas. It is our honor to have made Filipino event history in New York with our beloved Kapamilya, and their tremendous support inspires us to continue providing them with meaningful and memorable live entertainment experience.”
It takes a village to achieve something meaningful. One group of people who shares the triumph of “ASAP Live in New York” by truly becoming partners to make it possible are the sponsors. At the same time, the whole experience was a win-win for them as the awareness and engagement they had with the attendees at Barclays Center and with the Filipino community during the entire promotion period was massive. This proved again that businesses do well by doing good with customer- and people-centric brands and companies like ABS-CBN TFC. Some of the “ASAP Live in New York” sponsors articulated their delight: “The recent ASAP event in New YORK is HISTORIC and was a SPECTACULAR SHOW.” - Jan Cabangon of Mama Sita, United Food of Asia Trading “May Galak at Ngiting Sulit sa ASAPNY. We’re eager to join the next event!” – Robinson’s Land ABS-CBN TFC and the team behind “ASAP Live in New York” wish to thank the following sponsors for their historic hpartnership: Law Offices of Michael Gurfinkel, Philippine Airlines, Cream Silk, Rexona, Energen, Ponds White Beauty, Nature’s Spring, Money Gram, Pic Poc Juice, Nescafe Dolce Gusto, Xoom, Novo Nordisk, Remitly, Ponds Facial Wash, Judge Chewing Gum, Peerless (Champion), Tang, DOH, Jollibee, World Remit, LBC, Financial Rescue, Ramar Foods, ITN LLC, Seafood City, The Law Offices of John C Ye, Pizza Hut, Bio Oil, DirecTV, Landco

The excerpt below from the welcome message of no less than Governor of New York Andrew M. Cuomo summed up the triumph that “ASAP Live in New York” was: “ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel is known for providing excellent programming to an appreciative audience here in New York and neighboring areas. This large and growing network is proud to bring its most popular show, ASAP, to a market of delighted fans, and I join in applauding all who have helped make tonight’s event a reality. after. Apart from nurturing her brood, she also explored different businesses that became an extra source of income for her and the family. “Ayaw ng asawa ko na mag-work ako nu’n, pero ayaw din naman ng nanay ko na wala akong ginagawa kaya Jane of all trades ako. Lahat

kaya kong ibenta, lahat kaya kong palaguin. I had my own boutique, naka-focus ako sa retail and jewelry. I would go out of the country to Dubai, Thailand, Singapore. Kaya nauso Singapore gold nu’n,” she recalls. After establishing a network of loyal clients, she ventured into insurance sales
where she was ranked a top agent and became a part of her company’s Million Dollar Round Table. (Translation: Those who make millions in commission!) On the side, she and Daddy Teddy also bred shih tzus as a family business. There was no doubt Mommy Min is gifted in commerce, and she credits

her business acumen to her mother who also ran her own store in the local palengke, a trade she would also eventually explore. More than entrepreneurship, however, she learned a crucial lesson on being a working mom from Kathryn’s lola. “Nakita ko nu’n na wala masyadong time para sa amin ang nanay namin. Lumaki kami na may magandang support, oo, pero minsan, naiinggit ako na ’yung tita ko sabay-sabay silang siesta sa tanghali ng mga pinsan ko,” she says. It was then that Mommy Min decided that when she finally has a family of her own, she’d always prioritize
them over anything else. Though she continued traveling abroad and running her businesses as her children grew up, she strived to be there for them and worked hard to give them a great childhood. “Sa mga anak ko, hindi na nila kailangan humingi. Dahil kahit papa’no may sarili akong income, kapag alam ko na kailangan nilang sumabay sa mga classmates nila, binibili ko agad. Ayokong mahuhuli sila. Hindi kami mayaman, pero akala ng mga anak ko mayaman kami kasi may bago sila lagi,” she says. More than indulging their material whims, though, she also encouraged them to pursue their own dreams.
From choosing their courses in college to, yes, forging a career in show business, Mommy Min allowed her children to think and decide for themselves. While other moms would push their children to perform in front of relatives or attend acting workshops for potential stardom, Mommy Min didn’t really have to force her brood. “Naaalala ko, bibilhan ako ng comics ng tatay ko tapos I will reenact the stories. Ginawa ko din ’yun kay Kath at kay Kuya [Kevin]. May whiteboard ako, isusulat ko: ‘Ang bahay ay nasusunog! Paano mo sasabihin ’yun kung masaya ka? Nalulungkot ka? Umiiyak ka?’ Hindi ko alam

na that cultivated ang pagiging artista niya du’n, ganun lang naman siya nagstart,” she says. When Kathryn showed promise in performing arts, Mommy Min took it as an opportunity for her bunso to grow outside of the academe. She enrolled her daughter in dance and drama classes to keep her active— and it wasn’t just Kath, too. “May time na ’yung panganay ko, si Chrysler, gusto niya mag-work sa ABS-CBN tapos ginawa niyang way si Kathryn. Dumito muna sila sa Manila while they were having a summer workshop,” Mommy Min says. No big deal, right? What she didn’t know at the time was how it was going to change their lives forever.
‘Her career or your career?’
‘Mana-mana lang ’yan’ The Bernardo sisters analyze the traits they inherited from Mommy Min CHrysler “’Yung pagiging willing to do everything para sa family. Lahat kayang i-sacrifice. Like me, I gave up work for my daughter. Ganu’n din siya.” Kaye “’Yung pagiging strong. ’Yung strong in a sense na kahit maraming struggles, dapat continue ka pa din at focused ka. Kasi nu’ng hindi pa ganyan kasikat si Kath, sila talaga ni Papa ang nag-strive for the family. Si Mama, lahat ng work na-try niya—naging jeweler siya, naging retailer. As in, lahat ginawa niya to provide our family’s needs. Actually, sa lahat naging successful siya.” KatHryn “Yung ayaw naghihintay. Ayaw ko talaga na naghihintay. Kapag may late na tao, naiinis siya. So, ’pag ako naghihintay, sobrang bad trip din ako.”
While Ate Chrysler also had opportunities to break into the ’biz, it was Kathryn who ultimately had a breakthrough. It all started innocently enough. The eldest Bernardo sister would accompany Kathryn to go-sees and VTRs, until she eventually signed up the 6-year-old would-be Teen Queen to join a children’s beauty pageant. She failed to advance to the finals. “Nu’ng natalo si Kath, naawa kami. Umiiyak siya, sabi niya, ‘Ipapakita ko sa kanilang lahat na mas magaling ako sa kanila.’ Syempre, lahat naman kami naiyak. Du’n sinabi ng papa niya na samahan ko na siya,”

“Dati, kaya pang magbalikan sa Cabanatuan pero naging busy na din because of Kath’s schedule. Naalala ko, sabi ng friend ko, ‘Min, you have to choose—it’s either her career or your career.’” Mommy Min recounts. It wasn’t all for naught, as Kathryn started to book small projects here and there. Mommy Min would then shuttle her youngest back and forth from Cabanatuan to Manila for commitments. “Umuuwi-uwi pa kami nu’n, wala pa kaming bahay dito sa Manila. ’Pag tinawagan kami ng ABS-CBN, pupunta kami then uuwi din,” she says.

When Kathryn’s career started picking up, Chrysler finishing and Kaye entering college, and Kevin enrolling in high school, Daddy Teddy and Mommy Min agreed that it was the perfect time to relocate the brood to Manila. “Nakabili kami ng house, magkakasama kami ng mga bata. ’Yung husband ko naiwan sa Cabanatuan. Once a week, umuuwi ako ng
probinsya or ’yung husband ko pumupunta dito,” she recalls. They tried to go about their lives as they were, but there was really no stopping Kathryn’s rise to fame. A year after young Kathryn vowed to prove herself worthy of a spot in the limelight, the opportunities just kept pouring in. “Dati, kaya pang magbalikan sa Cabanatuan pero naging
Mother’s Day Plans Mommy Min’s three daughters Chrysler, Kaye, and Kathryn share how they’ll be celebrating their mom’s special day this year “We have a plan to give her something,” Kaye says. “’Yung matagal na niyang gusto—pero secret na lang muna. Basta, this Mother’s Day may plano kaming magkakapatid na ibigay sa kanya.” “Last year kasi, kumain lang kami sa labas. Ngayon, we’re thinking of going somewhere overnight para makapag-relax naman siya. Parang day-off niya. Siguro something sakto for summer. Beach, ’di ba?” Chrysler adds. “Minsan, okay na ’yung i-book siya ng flight para wala na siyang magagawa. Minsan kasi, hindi na niya naiisip sarili niya, kaya maganda sana bigyan siya ng holiday break. That’s the best gift we can give,” Kathryn says.
busy na din because of Kath’s schedule. Nahihirapan na ako. Napapabayaan ko na ’yung negosyo ko. Naalala ko, sabi ng friend ko, ‘Min, you have to choose—it’s either her career or your career.’” It was then that Mommy Min chose Kathryn’s over hers.
‘Ang saya-saya ko’
“Up to now, lagi kong naaalala ’yun: career ko o career ng anak ko? ’Di pwede
kasi talagang sabay, eh. Isa lang talaga ang mababantayan mo.” And guard her daughter’s career, she did. At 20 years old, Kathryn’s star is now one of the brightest in the industry. From Goin’ Bulilit to Mara Clara, Growing Up to Princess and I, Got to Believe to She’s Dating the Gangster, Crazy Beautiful You to Pangako Sa’yo, with mall shows, magazine covers, and photo shoots in between, Kathryn has
successfully transitioned from child star to bonafide superstar—and Mommy Min has been there every step of the way. That’s why she’s #MomGoals for many. She can’t even count the times how much she’s asked about how she raised a Teen Queen in her household. “Naku, ’ayan na naman!” she jokes. Seriously, though, she has some pretty sound advice to give to mothers who want their daughters to be the next

Mommy’s Girl Kathryn Bernardo speaks candidly about growing up with her mom When someone asks you about your mom, what’s the first thing you think of? ’Yung pagiging frank niya, maybe. Saka ’yung taas ng kilay niya! Haha!
What was it like growing up with your mom? Hindi perfect. Maraming misunderstandings lalo na ’yung growing up stage. Parati kaming may clash.
naming dalawa sobra kaming naging tight. Naging open kami sa isa’t isa. Ang daming trials pero sabay naming naovercome. What was the biggest trial you faced together? What was her advice to you? I felt nand’yan sila talaga at inaalalayan ako. Now that you’re a little older, do you avoid showing her that you’re hurt? Sometimes. You have three older siblings. How’s your relationship with them? I think we’re very simple. Masasabi ko na pinalaki kami na good ’yung relationship and super supportive sa isa’t isa. Being the youngest, were you babied? Hindi, ako ’yung binu-bully! Ako ’yung inuutusan parati at pinagkakaisahan. ’Yung pipilitin ka nila, ikaw yung mahahatak? ’Yung may hahanapin sa isang show tapos ikaw ’yung ituturo? Ako ’yung parating inaasar. How did Mommy Min discipline you and your siblings? There was a time na siguro
mga weeks or months kaming naging cold ng Ate then si Mama talaga makikita mo, “Hindi kayo dapat ganyan, sabay-sabay pa rin tayo kakain.” So na-break ’yung awkwardness namin. Wala kaming choice kundi magbati. Kapag may away, si Mama wala siyang kinakampihan. Kung papagalitan ’yung isa, papagalitan lahat. How is your relationship with your dad? What is the most important thing you learned from your parents? Nagkaru’n din ng time na hindi kami magkakasama, so parang naging single parent si Mama for a while. Ngayon, we’re the ones who benefited kasi they chose that decision. What was the biggest challenge your family has ever experienced? Parang may hiya at guilt kami kasi ’di ba dapat ’pag magasawa magkasama, pero ang nangyayari once a week or once every two weeks lang sila nagkikita. Growing kids kasi kami lahat nu’n kaya kailangan namin ng guide. Nag-sacrifice sila talaga for us. You just turned 20. Do you feel like Mommy Min is
‘letting you go’ a bit more now that you’re an adult? Two years ago, du’n nag-start pakonti-konti. Sa schedule ko, sa mga pupuntahan ko, she lets me decide. Feeling ko, through the years, I earned the trust. I prove to her na I can learn from my own mistakes, na gusto ko mag-grow sa mga nangyayari sa paligid ko and I can handle things. Lalo ’pag may work, mahirap pakiusapan. Pero sinasabi ko, I want to balance my life sa pagiging artista at pagiging teenager. Nakakatulong naman ’pag nag-uusap kami.
expensive gifts” or anything na bibilhin mo sa kanya, pero kapag and’yan na, alam kong kinikilig na siya. She appreciates that. Kahit mahal or mura. ’Pag may nakita ako online, I surprise her.
Are you open to her about your secrets? Do you tell her everything? I’m open to her, but not about everything. Kasi, ’di ba, may personal secrets na for friends or for family lang.
What is the worst conception people have of Mommy Min? As in, minsan, too much na.
How much do you tell your parents and your friends? Has anything changed in your relationship now that you’re older? Nowadays, how do you make lambing to Mommy Min? Sinasabi niya, “I hate
Do you ever notice her struggles? I feel it, hindi lang niya pinapakita. In a way, siya ’yung nanay at tatay, manager, and advisor naming lahat, so ang hirap nu’n pagsabay-sabayin. Syempre, nahihirapan din siya i-balance kung pa’no ibigay sa akin ’yung freedom and restrictions ko bilang bunso, babae, at artista. Mahirap ’yun i-handle. Nandito kami so she won’t be upset. Para hindi siya ang sisisihin.
What are you most thankful for in your mother-daughter relationship? ’Yung pagiging supportive niya, ’yun ang No. 1. And ’yung pag-raise niya sa aming magkakapatid. In-open niya kami sa reality. She doesn’t pretend. Kung ano ang totoo, whether masakit or not, sinasabi niya sa amin. So, as we grew up, mas naiintindihan namin ang buhay kasi gets na namin, nasabi na niya sa amin.

Masaya ako kasi ’yung journey naming dalawa sobra kaming naging tight. Naging open kami sa isa’t isa. Ang daming trials pero sabay naming naovercome.”—KATH ON MOMMY MIN
Kathryn Bernardo: “Ang masasabi ko lang, kailangan all of you in the family may suporta. With God’s blessing, ibibigay din Niya sa inyo [ang success]. Swerte rin kami sa Star Magic kasi hanggang ngayon alagangalaga si Kath,” Mommy Min says. It’s not just her and the management. Even her husband and children are all so supportive of their bunso’s journey in show business. “Nu’ng bata pa sila, may inggit kasi nandu’n ako lagi kay Kath. Pero ngayon, ’pag nga nasa bahay ako, lagi na nila akong tinatanong, ‘Nasa’n si Kath? Bakit nandito ka?’ Si Kaye, gusto niya na lagi akong nandu’n kay Kathryn dahil na rin siguro nasa rurok na siya ng tagumpay,” she shares. There’s no doubt that all those years growing up close to Mommy Min are to thank for the good (and gorgeous) heads on Kathryn’s and her siblings’ shoulders. Chrysler is a full-time mom to three-
year-old Lhexine, Kaye just received her post-graduate degree, Kevin is about to graduate from dentistry, and Kathryn is, well, one of the biggest stars of her generation. Mommy Min and Daddy Teddy surely can’t be any prouder. Of the many moments she feels blessed to see her children happy and successful, Mommy Min shares their family’s most recent milestone. Napaka-unforgettable nu’n,” she says.
‘Simple lang’
It’s hard to gather the whole family now that they’re all older, but this makes the simple things all the more precious to the Bernardos. Mommy Min recounts pampering their dogs as the ultimate bonding activity for all of them. (Everyone knows how big a dog lover Kathryn is!) “Before, panay shih tzu ang aso namin, 26 sila. Kaya lahat kami, tuwing uuwi ng probinsya, papaliguan namin lahat ’yun. May magboblower, may mag-ba-brush,” she recalls. Recently, Mommy Min also spent a well-deserved all-girl weekend getaway with Ate Chrysler, baby Lhexine, Kathryn, and their favorite dog, Cloud, after Pangako Sa’yo wrapped up. Massages, scrubs, manicures, and pedicures are just some of the little treats they all enjoyed together when time allows. “Nagpapaganda lang!” she jokes. Their favorite no-frills pastime, though, is still sharing a meal together—a luxury that comes few and far in between Kathryn’s
packed schedule. “’Yung asawa ko, lagi siyang nagluluto [sa bahay]. Magtatanong siya, ‘Ano’ng gusto n’yong ulam?’ ’Pag gising namin, ang gulo-gulo na ng kitchen kasi nagluluto na siya. Para kaming may handaan pero simple lang kasi simple lang naman ang mga gusto ng mga anak ko.” “Ang galing ko ’no?” Mommy Min laughs. She may as well be talking about her parenting skills, but she is actually referring to posing for her solo shot. It would be the first and last time we hear her refer solely to herself. It was her shoot as much as Kathryn’s, but it was always “kami,” “mga anak ko,” “husband ko,” or “apo ko” in one form or another throughout the day. If there’s anything to know about Mommy Min, it’s that she’s fiercely dedicated to her family. And we can’t think of any other fitting tribute to Mommy Min—and all the nanays’, mamas’, and mommies’—motherly love, sacrifice, and selflessness, but a simple salute on Mother’s Day.

The lady love
Erich Gonzales is herself an alum of a reality show. The 14-year-old Erika Chryselle Gonzales Gancayco from Davao was named champion of the second season of the talentreality search Star Circle Quest in 2004. While her stardom was a slow burn in the beginning, she was placed in important roles that soon became talked-about and top-rating projects. These included the TV adaptation of Katorse, and the local version of Maria La Del Barrio. Soon, she was placed among the most credible young actors in the industry. She has gone through a few intrigues in her showbiz life, but she has remained resilient, owing to the life challenges that she has had to face earlier on, as a loving child of a single mom (her father left them when she was a toddler, and she only met him once—in 2005—though they never got the chance to talk again, as he has passed away since).
Crossing paths
Who knew that a TV talk show guesting would prove to be a date with destiny? It was routine work for the two stars, albeit a fun one. KrisTV, a morning lifestyle show hosted by Kris Aquino, would be taping an episode in Palawan, and it invited the two as guests. “When I saw him, I just introduced myself. ‘Shy type’ lang,” Erich recalls. At the time, his good looks and physique did catch her eye, but it was also his humble personality that caught her attention. “We started talking and I found out that we went to

the same church, which is Victory Christian.” She was in a relationship at the time, so everything was just based on being friends. Yet, their onscreen chemistry did not go unnoticed. “The fans were kilig for us,” Daniel grins. The sparkle between them was, of course, easily detected by Kris’s sharp radar. “Siya ‘yung nag-umpisa ng #DanRichInAPerfectWorld. Si Ate Kris talaga…” Erich laughs as she remembers. Yet, they kept everything professional between them— even when they met again on the set of PBB, where she served as a judge for one of the weekly tasks that Daniel and his teammates had to do. Erich shares: “They had to put up a mini-concert, and if they failed, they would not have food for a week. I scored for them to pass, but my two co-judges Enchong (Dee) and Jason (Gainza) did not approve of their performance. Nakita ko naman kasi ‘yung effort nila, and they worked hard for it. They were fun to watch and I enjoyed it, pero siguro it was not enough sa kasama ko. But it’s okay.” As a result, the food budget was cut, Daniel sighs. “We had rice and bread, and bananas, but that was it. Super-tipid kami.”

aniel Matsunaga was born in Brazil on November 28, 1988, to a Japanese dad and a Brazilian mother (he is among those popularly known as Brapanese citizens, or products of Brazilian-Japanese unions; history would reveal that there was once a wave of Japanese immigrants to Brazil at the turn of the century, working in the coffee plantations—and through hard work, eventually started to own them). The teenage Daniel moved out of their home at 16, as children in Brazil are said to be taught independence even at a very young age. He left with a desire to explore the world. Modeling became his ticket to his dream, and before landing on Manila’s top glossies, he had already lived and worked in over 25 countries. He and his sister Vanessa moved locations every two or three months, depending on where the work was. When they made it to Hong Kong, people were telling them to give the Philippines a try. Things worked out for them very well, following a pastor’s practically prophetic advice that they had a purpose to fulfill here: Vanessa met and fell in love with her husband, photographer Jun Sunga, while Daniel, transitioning to local television, inspired thousands of viewers with his perseverance and humility (and of course, his drop-dead good looks), which led him to be the Pinoy Big Brother All-In Big Winner back in 2014.
Closer
The next time they met was on the set of Erich’s show Two Wives. She recounts: “We were looking for someone who would be the ‘knight in shining armor’ for my character Janine, someone who can save her. They really wanted Daniel, although they floated the names of other actors din. When they asked me about my choice, I told them I wanted him, because we had already worked before in Palawan, so he was the one I was most comfortable with. Everybody wanted him too, but he was very busy at the time. We got him two months before the show ended.” Eventually, some things took their natural course: she and her nonshowbiz businessman boyfriend eventually broke up. Daniel was there as a friend to someone who needed comforting. Until Erich went out with friends on group dates—and Daniel, the co-star and friend, was there, too. Daniel says, “Kasi

ako, nahihiya ako to have dates, but we would go out with friends to restaurants and movies—always in a group. Sa umpisa kasi, nahihiya ako. Alam ko na she’s a good artist, and sikat siya. I don’t want it to look as if it was just because of that. She’s very special and very different than sa iba. She’s malambing. Even ‘yung time ng Two Wives, she would try to explain to me the script, kasi sometimes I would get nervous with lines and all. Even at the time, seeing her makes my day.” He was starting to feel things—and Erich was, too. One day, he did the unthinkable. He surprised her with flowers. There was a funny story behind it, the couple says. They were taping for the teleserye and could not leave the set, so Daniel asked his driver to go and buy the flowers for her. The blooms were not as impressive as the young man wanted—as they were, after all, taping in a far-flung province. Nevertheless, the young lass was touched by the gesture. “Sabi ko, maganda! I appreciated it naman, because I told him that flowers make me smile. Tapos sabi niya, ‘eto, para sa iyo’. I really appreciated the effort.” The next bouquet made up for the first one, as he gifted her with 60 Ecuadorean roses, which are said to be the most beautiful and prized variety in the world, because of their long graceful stems and big colorful blooms. Siyempre kilig ‘di ba, to receive that?” Daniel did not stop with that either. His next step: to plant actual roses in her house’s garden. “He just showed up at the house, and asked where the gardening tools were,” she laughs. Soon afterwards: they finally became a couple. While the date when they became an official couple is kept as something private between the two, they admit that during another episode for KrisTV, where they went up in a hot air balloon, they were already exclusively dating.
Since becoming a couple more than a year ago, the relationship has only been growing stronger. “Never ko talagang naisip na magiging kami. I believe talaga that God has really someone for you na alam Niya na para sa’yo talaga,” Erich gushes. “You just need to have faith and wait for the right time,” Daniel agrees. “He has been working on something for me and if things do not go well, then I think He has something bigger in plan for me. And she’s the bigger plan for me. Erich is very special. She’s very different from the others.” Then he adds: “I don’t know how to explain it. She’s different. Madami na akong iba na nakilala in my modeling career and all. If you were in the world I was in, you can say that she’s very different. She doesn’t like to go out. She doesn’t drink. She’s very conservative, and I told myself that if I find somebody like that, eh ‘di okay. I think she’s the one. She’s something special. I don’t know how else to explain it.” Erich says that she prays for their relationship, “na kung siya talaga, and then siya. If this is what God wants, then let it be His will, not ours. Kasi no matter how hard we try, we don’t know what’s going to happen talaga. We just put each other on God’s hands and right now, we’re just enjoying each moment.”
Appetite for Love
One thing that they have in common while discovering each other is a passion for food. Erich loves baking, a result of her role in Suddenly It’s Magic, where she played a pastry chef. She also cooks in her spare time (she put up two restaurants with her former boyfriend—The Breakfast Club and Piccolo Cucina Moderna; she would reveal in a KrisTV episode later that she has since sold her shares) and Daniel raves over her carbonara, adobo, and munggo. Daniel has set up food businesses, too, brought about by his dream of bringing the world flavors he has encountered in his travels, to the Philippines. His first foray was Sobremesa in Ortigas, then Naxional South American Diner. He also has a ‘healthy delivery

service’ business called Healthy House (@healthyhouseph on Instagram). His business inspiration for his delivery service is his own eating habits, he shares. “It teaches you how to eat. It’s actually very important for you to know yourself, and know what you can eat. What kind of food you can eat at a certain time. We deliver the food to our clients. Our dishes are super healthy. We teach our clients to have a healthy life. For us we teach them slowly, by mixing healthy food with their workouts.” For Naxional, his inspiration is his mother’s cooking. “We are bringing out our country’s best dishes, along with other South American favorites. Included here is my mother’s recipe for Feijoada, or black beans with pork sausages.” He says that the businesses he owns are his way of preparing for married life. “Siyempre as a guy, I want to be able to provide for the family. ‘Yung priority ko muna is work. Ipon muna. Make sure na stable ‘yung business and work mo, so you can provide for future kids. I don’t want to let her provide for me. Kaya I have my own business na.”

Family affair
Speaking of kids, the couple has actually discussed how many kids they would want in the future—if and should they settle down. “He wants 6 kids. Sabi ko 2 to 3 lang,” Erich laughs. Daniel interjects and says he wants 15. “Sige, ‘pag ikaw ang manganak, p’wede,” his girlfriend retorts. They have met with each other’s family members—and surprisingly, both sides readily approve. It was as if destiny had prepared them to actually be together for life. “He met my mom,” Erich says. “He went to Davao, and he spent last Christmas with them. He met ‘yung mama ko, brother ko, and my sister from Japan. They love him. First time silang maging vocal na, ‘Erika, we like Daniel. Sana pakasal na kayo’. Gano’n. First time ‘yun.” Vanessa, Daniel’s older sister, confirms her brother’s being a simple, likeable fellow. “Very thoughtful,” she shares. “He is very passionate with
everything that he does. He really puts a lot of effort to be the best. He is constantly improving himself, and even to us, he really wants to take care of us even if he is tired when he gets home. He always wants to see my daughter Isabela, and they have fun together. He’s the guy that even though he’s tired or he’s going through anything, he never shows it, he is always trying to be very positive about it, and he always wants to bring the best in people, and make everybody comfortable and happy.” She adds that Daniel is so caring about their mother, “like God is in the sky, my mom is on earth. He takes care of her that much.” According to Vanessa, Erich loves playing with Isabela too. “She’s always over whenever she has time. She loves kids! She’s super funny and super ingay. She is very caring, she’s very endearing. She loves my mom, because my mom really embraced her as a daughter, and my mom cooks for her every time she comes to the house. My mom bakes for her especially kapag may taping sila ng super late, and she passes by the house even though it is super far, just to eat. She is with Isabela making sayaw.” Daniel’s ate has this to say about the relationship: “I see them complement each other well; they are very similar in so many aspects. Even their hands are similar—it is funny to say this, but the lines on their hands are very similar. My mom and I find that so weird. They are always playing around, joking around; I can tell that they’re really in love, it is so nice. They have been together for a long time—but it is still like as if they are new, so I think that’s the good part of their relationship. I see a bright future for them, I am hoping for the best but of course whatever God has in store for them, God will provide and take care of them.”
living together, and they were quick to deny it. “Hala, grabe, may house siya sa Makati,” Erich avers. His house in Quezon City is set to be finished this year, as well. “Magkalapit lang kami ng village, it’s not true that we are living in. We are living near each other.” They take their bashers with a grain of salt. “People will always say their opinion naman. We just want to live our lives. We don’t want to dwell on the hate. Why hate, when there’s so much love to give?” she quips. They pray for these people’s happiness and peace of mind, they say. Daniel adds, “We inspire other people from our relationship. There’s no reason to hide any relationship if it’s true. We have no reasons to pretend. There’s no reason to hide any of these things. I just try to be myself. As fast as He can give everything, He can take it away easily. It all depends on your faith.” They likewise keep each other in their prayers. “I pray everyday. My life is a big blessing right now, especially with her in it.” Then, Erich responds: “I believe if it is in God’s hands, He will put you in the hands of the right person. Daniel makes me a better person. We support each other. There is love and respect,” looking at her beau, meaningfully and tenderly. “We want to grow together.”
Looking to the Future
Marriage has been discussed, but for now they are focusing on work, and Erich hints that “it will be a surprise.” What is concrete, though, are their plans to visit Brazil after they wrap up their teleserye. “I want her to see everything,” Daniel enthuses. There have been rumors of them

so our creative team had to change the American character to Brazilian-Japanese, just like Daniel Matsunaga. Regardless, it’s still a love story that tackles an intercultural relationship, while showcasing the good of our Filipino culture.” The choice of the DanRich tandem was a no-brainer for the production. “Sikat na sikat pa si Daniel nu’n kasi he just came out of the PBB house. Kasi nga, real-life sweethearts sila, when they were doing this show,” says director Don Cuaresma. The pair now have such a huge following that even when they travel abroad, such as recently in San Francisco, USA, for the annual Pistahan Parade and Festival, fans came in droves to welcome
them and show their support—even calling them by their screen names, ‘Pinang’ and ‘Phil’. So what’s next for Be My Lady? Boborol reveals: “For our new season, viewers will continue to follow the journey of Phil and Pinang’s love story. Their relationship is still in its infancy stage, so to speak. Will they be able to survive the challenges and obstacles couples face, and make their love story ending a happy one? How, when and where will Phil propose marriage? Or will there even be a proposal or a wedding? Viewers will also see how the Crisostomo family shall rise from poverty and pay off their debts. They will also follow the love stories of Pinang’s siblings Mackie (with Lotlot) and Julian (with Marga).” But the biggest question, which Boborol poses now, is: “Will their love story have a happy ending too?”

aytime TV series Be My Lady (BML) is raking in the numbers— winning the numbers game and the hearts of its daytime followers. Its 101st episode, that aired on June 9, 2016, garnered a 21.7% nationwide rating by Kantar Media, an unprecedented high. The hit romantic-comedy program starred in by real-life sweethearts Daniel and Erich is now on its third extension, and has truly become a feel-good morning habit. Unit Director Ted Boborol shares: “The story of Be My Lady is a concept by our creative manager Mel del Rosario. It was originally a love story between an American and a Filipina. It was Ma’am Charo’s (Santos-Concio, Chief Content Officer) suggestion to cast DanRich,

Filipino diners now have sharper foodie skills, with the influx of international cuisines and local joints being introduced. eavily inspired by home cooking and traditional family recipes, Naxional Diner is an attempt to fill in the gaps in our curiosity about South American cuisine. Cynthia Patos, Naxional’s Venezuelaborn postre (Brazilian term for dessert) chef, shared to StarStudio that the ‘X’ in Naxional refers to the number of South American countries with a traditional dish or two in their menu: gastronomic delights from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Mexico, to name some. The concept of this unique food experience came from Daniel’s friend Raymond Magaluyo, who was inspired by his visits to restos abroad. Siblings Daniel and Vanessa Matsunaga, and her husband Jun Sunga joined Magaluyo; the Matsunagas decided to enlist the help of their Brazilian mother, Geralda Matsunaga, who came in with a gamut of her own recipes.

Feel at home
Not only does their food scream South America; so does the restaurant itself. “We want something very festive, colorful and proud, and very passionate. I think that’s our personality in general, and we wanted to bring a little bit of our country to the Philippines, and showcase the colors, tastes, of everything, and of food,” Vanessa shares. It’s definitely a welcome treat. StarStudio • OCTOBER 2016

Apart from the authentic food, one will also be welcomed with beautiful music and wall murals inspired by different stories of South America. The walls are adorned with paintings which offer a different kind of comfort, giving a homey feel that is very distinct to the Latin culture. The entire place is huge with lots of comfortably cushioned chairs and warmly lit with chandeliers playfully made with Coke bottles.

How To Survive A Titigan Challenge With James Reid —especially when you’re not Nadine Lustre BY PATTI SUNIO

hat to do when James Reid challenges you to a stare down? You panic and get mixed feelings because of course you want to but kind of don’t want to, either, because you know you’ll lose. Or maybe not. We did our research and found some tried-and-tested methods to survive a staring contest with your ultimate crush. Just try any one of these steps for better chances of winning! Good luck! Imagine that you’re James Reid’s mother. No reason to get kilig then, right? Psychologically and physically, these are ways to hide your #feels-- Cross your arms, and position your torso at a 45-degree angle, so you don’t face him fully.

Warning! Don’t fall into a deep stare. Avoid his eyes! Or wait, is this allowed? Go mental. Mind over matter. This will not affect you. There is nothing kilig about it. Repeat 3x. Slowly breathe in, and breathe out. Smile right from the beginning. So no one will notice if James’ video makes 44

. At one time I was your age and like all UP students, I wanted to change the world. Maybe I have. But the world also changed me. Now I am old enough to have seen the world and have all my illusions shattered. Am I disillusioned? No, because as the poet said:
Here are a dozen of our favorites.
1.
Politicians are fond of saying “we”. The only people entitled to use “we” are monarchs, editorial writers, and pregnant women.
2.
Pareho silang may one in a million chance na maging totoong tao.
3.
Parating pakanan, never kakaliwa.
4.
Sabi nila, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Pero nang nakita ko ang picture mo, tatlong words lang ang naisip ko: “ I love you.”
5. 6.
Ang love ay parang bayad sa jeep. Minsan hindi nasusuklian.
When you are young, travel as much as you can... If possible, at someone else’s expense.
7.
There is no substitute for a reputation. It is like virginity: once lost, it can never be recovered.
8.
For me, it is very, very dangerous for a person to say, “I know what God wants.” Really? Bakit, may cell phone ba siya?
9.
Do not be disheartened if you do not succeed immediately in life. The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
10
. Being successful means being a person of value to others.
Though much is taken, much abides; and though We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Nadine to James: When was the first time you took notice of me? James: The first time I actually noticed you was at the acting workshop, [you were] going down the elevator. J: What was your first impression of me? Nadine: [Not] suplado but then, I was always having a hard time talking to you during the music video shoot (“Alam Niya Ba”). I don’t know the right word for that...tahimik lang. Hindi nga masungit eh. Parang introvert, I guess. J: Okay, fair enough. N: What’s the one thing I do that annoys you? N: *long pause* People are always looking at me, so parang hindi ko na alam. J: *tries to help* All the stuff you shouldn’t see? N: Take a bath? *laughs* N: What do you prefer, being in front of the camera or behind the lens? J: I like both; I think I have to say in front of the camera, yeah. J: Am I better in front of the camera or behind the lens? N: Both! J: Thank you! *smiles* N: If we could have a day of anonymity, what would we do together that we normally couldn’t? J: Normal things like go to the mall, watch movies, dinner, and walk home. N: Yes! J: Would you rather live in the moment or plan for the future? N: Live in the moment. ’Cause before, I used to plan a lot. Before Diary Ng Panget, I used to plan a lot, like this is what I wanna do, I’m gonna do this and stuff like that. Then Diary Ng Panget happened, so my plans got ruined. Parang ganun. N: What’s your favorite memory while shooting our first music video together? J: *thinks for a while* N: *sings in the background* N: [Was] it me trying to talk to you? J: Yeah, I knew you were trying. J: Number one goal is to travel the world. N: Yes, mine too. J: Travel the world with all the gadgets. Take photos, and hopefully finish the travel videos. One day. N: The only reason why I want two is because I don’t wanna be in the hospital more than twice. But that’s the main reason why I only want two. Ayoko ng hospital. I’ve never been in a hospital before. Imagine ’pag nagpapa-injection ako, I’d freak out. AYOKO NG DEXTROSE, THAT’S IT. J: I just want 1 girl. N: ...and 2 boys. J: Yeah, 1 girl, 2 boys. N: When did you realize this could be really a career? J: I think it was a time before I joined Viva (Management). When I didn’t really know what I was doing. And I was just doing mall tours, shows, performing and I loved it so much. I thought I could do this. I can’t imagine sitting behind the computer like 9 to 5. J: Can you remember the moment that you felt that this is it, you made it? N: Diary Ng Panget premiere night. J: *agrees* Yup! At the red carpet? N: Yes! We were having mall tours, parang ganyan. But then hindi siya nagsi-sink in sakin doon. Parang nung premiere night ang daming tao nagsisigawan. Manunuod na kami ng movie, ’yun ’yung time na parang, ‘Oh my God, this is it.’ J: Yeah, it was both our first time headlining a movie so we thought what if it doesn’t click. What if it was a flop. But then I was so relieved when we saw so many fans surrounding the red carpet, and walking down. Yeah, that was the time, even me, that [we thought] we made it.

After the shoot, Nadine and James started figuring out what the actual layout would look like. To accentuate the article and photos, they wanted more— an illustrated element.

N: Do you think our relationship helps us on our work for Till I Met You? J: No. N: Right now, no, right? J: I think when it’s work, it’s work. It just makes it easier to work. N: To wake up early, go to work, stay there, tambay, tengga. J: It makes it more fun. J: How was On The Wings of Love’s Leah different from Till I Met You’s Iris? N: Leah is very…not mahinhin, but may pagkadalagang Filipina siya. Ito na lang, top of my head. [Si] Iris kasi medyo may pagka-boyish, ’cause she grew up with Ali. Kasi lalaki best friend niya so I guess she’s more boyish. I keep forgetting the word, basta ’yun. Not outgoing, not intense, but mas magulo. J: Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to the Pop Girls Nadine? N: Oh my God! Why do you have to say Pop Girls? *laughs* J: It says right here, Pop Girls Nadine. J: *sings* Sige, sige, sayaw! N: *playfully slaps James* Stop! J: *sings again* Sige, sige, sayaw! N: Stop it. *laughs* I guess kasi before when I was with Pop Girls I felt like, even when I had projects [there], parang I didn’t take it seriously. I felt it I was like playing around lang. I’m doing this because I’m here. Siguro, I’ll tell her to be passionate about it. And to love what I was doing. Kasi the reason why I stopped, studied, got depressed was because I lost those projects. I was really down and I kept telling myself na sana pala sineryoso ko, sana pala minahal ko. Kasi parang kaya siya umalis, kaya

nawala ko career ko sa akin, it’s because parang I didn’t appreciate. So ’yun, be passionate about it. Do it with all your heart. J: So you’re not gonna tell her to get rid of the bangs? *teases* N: *laughs* No! I want the bangs back. J: Yeah, I can relate. After PBB, I didn’t take it seriously. And only ’till people forgot about me, that’s the only time I decided to take it seriously. N: Maybe it’s the age? J: Yeah. N: Because we are the same age. J: We were young, we had bangs… N: Wait, you had bangs? *confused* J: No *laughs* I had a terrible awkward stage as well. N: *looks at James knowingly* Yes! N: Who am I in your eyes? J: You’re my best friend. N: Why do you always have to get my answers? J: Because we have the same answers. J: We’re bestfriends, you understand me, I can be myself—be silly around you, and it makes me relaxed like I don’t have to try. N: Yiiee, kinilig ako! *Crowd gets kilig, too* N: Are you going to ask me the same question? J: I am. N: [He’s my] Best friend, partner in crime. he’s my security blanket. I just feel secure whenever I’m with him. I feel like I can tell him everything. Food buddy! Travel buddy, gym buddy. You said everything already... J: You said everything. *smiles* [She’s my] EVERYTHING.
