LILA Celebrates Students During the Safer at Home Order
W
hen it comes to honoring its students, “by any means necessary” might as well be the motto for the International School of Los Angeles. When faced with the COVID-19 global pandemic in late March, LILA moved all classroom instruction to remote e-Learning as its campuses closed to students. Now, with the end of the school year looming, reimagined graduation ceremonies have become the main focus. As Head of School Michael Maniska states: “Graduation is a significant rite of passage in the life of a young person. Despite the strictures of the day, it seemed terribly important for us to do something memorable for our students of the class of 2020.” The class of 2020 has continued the trend of excellent college admissions at LILA: 75% of seniors who applied to
universities received 53 acceptances to a “Top 100 Global University” (U.S. News & World Report). To honor the 29 graduating students, LILA hosted a virtual ceremony featuring, among others, speeches from the head of school, the French Consulate, many members of the faculty and staff, campus director Anneli Harvey, French baccalauréat valedictorian Zeina Hassan, International Baccalaureate valedictorian Jillian Seitz, and student council co-President Francis Barreau. In addition, students participated in LILA’s first drive-in graduation ceremony. For a multilingual and multicultural community like LILA’s, maintaining close-knit ties is an unchanging priority, the need for which resonates even more deeply in today’s context.

Providence Class of 2020 Honored at Campus
M
embers of the 61st graduating class of Providence High School were celebrated at a recent “Drive-Thru Memory Lane.” They donned caps and gowns and participated with members of their families in a vehicle parade through a decorated campus. All 96 seniors received surprise gifts along with their diploma covers; diplomas are sent out after graduation. Providence implemented its remote learning curriculum on March 16 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and after that students did not miss a day of instruction. Academic accommodations and adjustments were made so students could complete the school year remotely. School leaders made the decision to maintain and publish letter grades on transcripts for all students instead of adopting a pass/fail system. The class of 2020 had a 100% graduation rate. Mariam Ebrahimi was named valedictorian, and Crystal Sanrow salutatorian. Sanrow also was the recipient of the Mother Joseph Award, while Angelo Vitug received the Spirit Award and Gregory Simitian was honored with the Christian Service Award. Providence’s administration includes Head of School Scott McLarty, Assistant Head of School Allison Castro, Dean of Students Ernest Sly and Dean of Studies Kerry Martin.

Monterey Principal Praises Grads’ ‘Richness of Character’
A
t Monterey High School, it says “A Second Chance for Success” above the door. It’s our humble response to the challenges we all face as we navigate life. It’s as true for me as it is for our students. Every day I have the opportunity to learn, grow, bounce back from any mistakes I made yesterday and put my best foot forward today. Some have questioned the motto above the door, having a negative reading as it relates to admitting that you failed at your first chance for success. We don’t see it that way. Our student body, our staff, our school culture has a refreshing humility and authenticity. That culture has never been more perfectly captured by a graduating class. Life threw them curveballs. They didn’t stop hacking. The grit they developed over time prepared them for this mo-
ment. A pandemic during your senior year, online graduation, Zoom classes, no prom … Talk about some curveballs! How did they respond? With gratitude toward their teachers. With understanding for each other. With hope for the future. With passion for the marginalized. With humility and authenticity. When you’ve been through some things, it develops a richness of character that exposes itself during the most difficult times. That richness has been on display during this stretch run to the finish line. It makes me incredibly proud to be the principal at Monterey High School. I send out this group of graduates with hope in my heart for what their and our next chapter will look like." David Guyer Principal, Monterey High School and Magnolia Park School
