A Truly
Magical
Landscape
As we landed at Östersund in Sweden we were met by underwhelming grey skies and slushy snow descending from the skies. However, the closer we reached to our base for the week, the crisper the snow became and we entered a truly magical landscape. Nestled in the pine forests of the Swedish countryside, our home for the week could have come straight off a postcard.
Tand special thanks to team members of the Year netball, the strongest House competition, and of course to everyone who took part in the biathlon, for which Tulley’s always provides the largest turnout. am sure that future years will only consolidate this engagement with Alleyn’s sport.
If there is one thing will remember this year for, however, it is the spread of the Tulley’s spirit, as we strongly influenced new societies and clubs. Although my Year did not get to formulate the biannual House Music, we more than made up for it with strong performances in the new inter-House Model United Nations, organised by a recent development of the MUN Society at Alleyn’s. Alleyn’s MUN also sent delegations to both Lady Eleanor Holles MUN and London Oratory School MUN, with several
Tulley’s speakers winning awards for their contributions. We also saw great oratory skills from inter-House debating, particularly from Theo Chevis, showing how diverse our talent is. This may be personal bias, but in my last year at Alleyn’s saw brilliant Tulley’s engagement in Drama. In the Upper School play, Rent, the Middle School play, the Bear Pit and Edinburgh Fringe, Tulley’s displayed its traditional enthusiasm with brilliant performances.
It has been a privilege to help manage Tulley’s House during one of its most successful years; my last year at Alleyn’s has seen the return of Tulley’s as House that can participate in any number of events. is one of the most successful and open communities within the School, and when think back on my time at Alleyn’s, think first of my House. wish my successors all the luck in the world and urge them to build upon the success of this year! If anything, we became a new powerhouse in the Alleyn’s sport arena, thanks to the incredible contribution from a new generation of the Red Army, which solidified Tulley’s as one of the most diverse and enthusiastic communities at Alleyn’s. Older members of the Alleyn’s community may remember that Tulley’s led the School in terms of sporting prowess in the past, winning the Victor Ludorum as many as four times consecutively, and while previous years may have seen a decline in this area, was delighted to see the incredible enthusiasm Tulley’s is known for has paid off this year, we were placed first in over seven sporting events record for Tulley's. This incredible achievement meant we came second in the Victor Ludorum, return to form am delighted to see, and can leave Alleyn’s knowing the House’s sporting reputation is safe. was surprised to hear that the newly formed Upper School dodgeball (which only joined for a bit of fun) contributed towards the Victor Ludorum,
Day one was an easy start, just a doddle for us all to master the art of cross country skiing, including the odd incline and slope to mix things up bit. Following this was a day of ice fishing, dog sledging and an arctic BBQ on the frozen shores of Sandviksjon Lake. Once oriented and the shock of the outhouse had settled down, we entered into our three-day survival phase. Cadets building snowholes, natural shelters, bushcraft skills and learning how to survive in an arctic environment. It was a tough few days for all, but we learnt a lot. Our final day was a well-earned rest day, which included the opportunity to have hot shower, sauna and soak in the hot tub. Well done to all, and a big thank you to the staff who made this possible. The Headmaster’s Review
What follows is the text of the Headmaster’s Speech Day Address, delivered at St Barnabas Church on the morning of Founder’s Day, 29 June 2019.
Chairman, distinguished guests, Governors, parents and prize-winners: it is my pleasure to report for the ninth time as Headmaster at Alleyn’s School Speech Day. We meet today at the mid-point of our 400th anniversary year – a year which began in the sacral splendour of Westminster Abbey and which will conclude next term with an alumni dinner at the House of Lords and a special carol service in Christ’s Chapel. Between times we have held a series of free public lectures, All@Alleyns, on topics ranging from Pissarro in Dulwich to the Psychology of Evil, and welcomed over 500 former pupils back for the Big Reunion a fortnight ago, where the youngest guest was 19 and the oldest 91! All were amazed by the striking progress of the School, its site and its facilities over the decades; but at the reassured by the enduring and all

If truth be told, the College of God’s Gift has not always been the acme of academic excellence, with the boysfor boys they were engaged in sheepstealing and highway robbery between bouts of book learning more credulous than sedulous. How different the Alleyn’s of today, where last year’s public examinations saw over half of GCSEs awarded the new grade 9, with 74% A* (9 or 8) and 99% A*, A or B (9, 8, 7 or 6).
At A level, 37% of all grades awarded were A*, 76% A*A, and 92% A*AB. These impressive results once again opened doors for our leavers, of whom the vast majority went on to a university of preference. In addition to applications via the UCAS system, five students took up places at Boston, McGill, the TUV in Berlin and the University of Virginia; and four students started an Art Foundation course, three in London in Paris. in

hat an exciting year it has been for Cribb’s! We started the academic year with a bang with our Evening with Cribb’s event. It was a heartwarming evening as we raised money for our two excellent House charities the KASHF Foundation and Veterans with Dog’s. Thanks to the wonderful auction items, including Mr Sri’s and Mr Keane’s Curry for 20, we raised a very creditable £3,000 on the night. We also sold an 450 Krispy Kremes in under four minutes at breaktime! are not a particularly sporty House, we did come last in the Victor Ludorum. We did however win the inter-House Model United Nations, chess, and pancake tossing! It has been a fun year for Cribb’s and the House spirit has been the best since I joined. want to thank all the Vice House Captains, who aided me and the House this year, and Mr Sri for always having our backs. would like to say a big thank you to all our amazing tutors, and to Mr Keane, who has been a big part of Cribb’s, – I wish him all the best as he moves to Dubai to start a new life! CAPTAIN'S REVIEW The beginning of the academic year saw the end of the celebrations for Alleyn's 400th Anniversary with big events – Jacobean Day and Patently Alleyn's A fairly odd day don't think we ever expected to be welcomed into School by teachers wearing ruffs, feathered hats, breeches and corsets. The day was filled with Jacobean themed activities, from mob games on the playing fields to learning Jacobean dance and rituals, including the 'Edward Alleyn Jig'. All pupils took part this special day and attended the treeplanting ceremony, led by Dr Savage and accompanied by the Senior and Junior School Captains. This year has been no exception to the wide variety of co-curricular activities Alleyn's has to offer. In the Advent term, the Upper School play, Macbeth showcased the talent on tap at Alleyn's. Sports, dance, CCF, DofE, volunteering and more have continued to allow pupils to have a break from academic work and explore other aspects of School life. The new Year transitioned into Middle School seamlessly and were immediately introduced into the competitive nature of House events with the biennial House Music. All the Houses sang their hearts out and stormed the stage leading to Cribb's taking the crown. Although the last term and half were not anything anyone would have wished nor imagined, the entire School transitioned to Virtually Alleyn's smoothly. A lot of the co-curricular activities were able to adapt to these changes and occur virtually, as well as some new ones. The charity community had also found ways to raise money for our two School charities; including virtual quiz, an art sale, concert, juggling competition and a cake decorating competition. Thank you to all the teachers involved in making this platform as enjoyable as possible. would also like to say massive thank you to Dr Savage for all his work as Headmaster for the past ten years. wish him the best of luck for his new position at Westminster; they are incredibly fortunate to have him coming. His presence is certainly going to be missed by all. would also like to say good luck to Mr Skinnard and Mrs Lunnon who will be taking the role of Head in September and January respectively. has been hugely enjoyable year to fulfil the role of School Captain. Thank you to Elena Ahjem and Romy Kemp, among all the other prefects for all the help and work you have done. Good luck to everyone next year with all the added responsibilities and challenges of Year 13. My experience at Alleyn's over the past seven years has been stimulating, jam-packed and, most importantly, incredibly enjoyable. am sure the fond memories of my Alleyn's journey will be shared by my peers and everyone after us. would like to pay tribute to all the staff at Alleyn's for all the work you do to make us feel at home every day. Without your hard work Alleyn's would not be the School it is. am going to thoroughly miss this truly special School and will always keep a special place in my heart for Alleyn's. Ore Bakre 13GJ

Anna Chandler de Waal – Runner-Up A free woman in an unfree society will be monster.’ To what extent can we consider Euripides’ the Bacchae and Angela Carter’s the Bloody Chamber and Other Stories to present ‘monstrous’ women as liberated? Before reading Euripides’ the Bacchae my understanding of the maenads as violent women driven to madness by Dionysus led me to anticipate their unambiguous dismissal as merely monstrous pawns. instead was surprised and gratified by the seemingly utopic visions of the maenads performing miracles of nature, independent of, and able to protect themselves from, men. Being aware of diverse interpretations of the play, wanted to investigate whether my instincts of the maenads being liberated were grounded. In order to provide multi-faceted argument that would challenge me to work in less conventional corners of the text, decided to compare the Bacchae to Carter’s The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories both texts being concerned with complex presentations of gender, sexuality and liberation. This also providing an opportunity to ask whether a male voice of 5th century BC Greece could genuinely subvert misogynistic portrayals of women in the same way that a 20th century female writer might. further considered the concept of liberation through various lights, discussing monstrosity as the liberation from oppressive patriarchal norms, the denial of the female libido, and the performative nature of femininity. My argument was informed by a wide variety of sources, including contemporary critics, philosophy, Greek art and contemporary novels, that allowed me to build layers of diverse voices upon my own. As the texts are so complex, my essay evolved through the reflection on challenges to my argument and the subsequent conclusion that acknowledged such inevitable nuances. Theo Chevis – Runner-Up How can statistically‐rigorous rating systems, such as Elo and Glicko-2, expose glaring limitations to our current exercise of the democratic process? In 2016, the Democratic and Republican nominees for the US Presidential Election were the most and second‐most disliked candidates out of the pool of choices; Clinton’s disapproval rating reaching 53% and Trump’s, historic 60% (May 2016). The result was a Presidential Election that fiercely commanded the engagement of both extremes on the political spectrum, but left countless feeling unwilling to back either candidate. Outcomes like this are not a recent development. People typically vote for the candidate that best suits their interests, which almost always either the distinctly socialist or the distinctly conservative choice. While perhaps the aggregate of voters would be content with more moderate candidate, those toward the centre must contend with firm degree of political bias current formulations of the voting system. Often, this leads to political parties with radically differing ideals being frequently rotated in and out of office, encouraging shortsighted policy‐making, a reduction in market optimism, and fiscal policy that ignores the interests of large proportions of society. The dilemma we face is trying to identify better way to process the input of the voter. One particular way, of which evidence the merit, involves the retrofitting of system originally used to rank chess players into the unlikely environment of 21st Century politics. By creating a data‐crunching computer program, have shown that the voting system’s margin of error in gauging the will of the people may be as high as 25%. The Governors’ Research Project Prize is an opportunity for Upper School students to enrich their learning through the undertaking of a research project on a topic they have not formally covered in class. Below are their project abstracts. Parents and pupils with access can read the full length essays on the Hub. Read the full essays at: https://learning.alleyns.org.uk/enrichment/the-governors-research-project-prize-2020 Eve Freeman – Winner How far do translations shape our understanding of ancient literature? Translations are the lens through which we access the ancient world. Translation fascinates me; the study of it bridges linguistic knowledge, literature, and philosophy to question how languages inform our lives. Translations of ancient literature are to me clearly interpreted form of reception, yet they continue to be traditionally presented as inferior ways to access original texts. In this essay, seek to determine how far translations shape our understanding of ancient literature and thereby the ancient world itself. firstly discuss the context of translations, as ‘inferior versions’ of text, and how this affects the ways in which they shape our understanding. Secondly, demonstrate that translations are not simply a vehicle to access the text but offer distinctly different readings which shape our understanding of a text in contrasting ways by comparing two extracts from English translations of the Aeneid by John Dryden and David West. Finally, compare translations with other forms of literary reception; literary reception can shift the perspective on ancient literature radically whilst translations shift the landscape of the text itself. Translations and other literary reception can also function together, inextricably linked, as with Catullus, to shape our understanding of ancient literature. Ultimately, conclude that translations shape our understanding of ancient literature to a significant extent; although this shaping may be more nuanced, the unique position of translations allows them to shape understanding in more surprising and unexpected ways than other forms of literary reception. his year am proud to say Spurgeon’s has excelled in several areas of School life. Although one might recall in the distant past Spurgeon’s being tarnished with the false reputation of being the ‘joke House’, in 2020 that is a simply incomprehensible concept. For the past few years we have disproved any such accusations and shown ourselves to be serious competitors in sport, music and more. We kicked off the year with House Music. Although some of the other Houses scoffed at our decision to perform an Avicii Medley and She Said by Plan (rap and all), we showed them that taking risks can pay off when we placed second. This podium finish not only proved our critics wrong, but was also first in Spurgeon’s House Music history. Credit here must really be attributed to the exceptionally talented yet unbelievably modest Zac Taylor-Schindler and Jules Lanari-Collard, without whom would have all probably looked and sounded ridiculous. The momentum and House spirit which House Music engendered was quickly carried through into the sporting arena, with the Year 9 boys winning football, the first House sporting event of the year. We went on to come first Upper School fives, Upper School basketball and Year 10 hockey. Although several of the summer sporting events could not take place, our previous triumphs allowed us to come second in the Victor Ludorum, only narrowly missing out on winning the title for the second year in This year, as always, Spurgeon’s stage presence during charity events has been undeniable. Although we were robbed of recognition in the Lip Sync competition, we picked ourselves up and claimed victory at the DanceOff, after wowing the audience with Footloose and Does Your Mother Know? In addition to this triumph, we have also consistently shown that we can impress the more intellectual House competitions, as we placed third in interHouse chess and excelled in debating. For our annual charity, this year Spurgeon’s chose to support the ECHO, which run by the Evelina Children’s Hospital. They do amazing work providing much-needed support not only for children suffering with heart conditions, but also for their families. Our main fundraising activity for this charity was inter-House Karaoke, which was great success and we are grateful to anyone who bought a ticket or contributed in any way to this cause. summary of the year would be incomplete without mentioning how our time together as House was sadly cut short in March. However, through the new world of Virtually Alleyn’s Spurgeon’s members adjusted to online lessons, assemblies and House meetings, which allowed us to remain tight-knit community. Finally, would like to say huge thank you to Mr Geldeard, to all the Spurgeon’s form tutors and to our Vice Captains, Olivia, Lucas, Alice and Charlie, without the help of whom we would have been unable to have such successful year. am overjoyed that Eve Gueterbock will be taking on the post of House Captain next year and, with the support of Francesca, Sixtine and Maria, am confident that she will lead the House in what will no doubt be another strong year for Spurgeon’s. Phoebe Swords 13ED 46 47 It is my pleasure to introduce the latest edition of Scriblerus the annual digest of the preceding academic year. The Campaign
In 2020 with the arrival of the pandemic they moved quickly to embrace online distance learning. However they had two problems:
1. How could they attract new students with all in person events with feeder schools and open evenings cancelled?
2. How could they make sure that those already planning to come with offers would still take up their place?
We created a campaign platform taking inspiration form their logo and a map pin.
Focusing on messaging and tone of voice we used their 'location' as a signifier for the campaign.
Step One
With growing concern over the mental health of young people during lockdown we created a wellbeing postcard sent to all students with offers during National Wellbeing Week which gave all the support information they needed.

Exeter College Oxford
Exeter College has been working with TGDH since early 2021 to build and design a communications and fundraising campaign to support the £11.3m Library restoration project.
After a kick off meeting, TGDH spent significant time learning about the College – who Exeter are, what there identity was and what needed to be achieved from the campaign. From there a direct mail pack was created to launch the library fundraising to the alumni which produced outstanding results. This first DM raised nearly £250,000 and achieved a 3.2% response rate. Which exceeded the colleges expectations! At the same time a microsite was launched and was designed to match and supplement the broader design work of the campaign.
Alongside producing the DM and the microsite, TGDH also worked with the college to produce a document to be used during conversations with major donors. The brochure is sympathetic to the broader design but more refined, with a focus on excellent photography and beautiful embellishment.
