Dear Members and Friends, As this issue of INFORMA is getting published just after the second quarter 2014, it is appropriate to reflect on events that have taken place in the first half of the year. Among them, the recent government change and the initiatives promoted by the Italian Embassy, with the participation of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC) and the Italian Trade Commission under the “Sistema Italia” umbrella. These initiatives aim at adding business opportunities for Italian enterprises in Thailand and Thai enterprises in Italy, in this period of difficulties. A meeting took place with larger Italian companies in Thailand to share their general views and specific needs. It was followed a meeting in June with a visiting Banca D’Italia economic manager to provide input for financial policies that would help investments overseas as well as in Italy. A direct contact was also made by TICC in June with the Thai Ambassador in Rome to make his Embassy aware of services that can be provided by TICC in Bangkok. The contact was well received, in recognition of the limited capability of the Embassy to offer business assistance to interested Italian companies. All of this, plus the specific suggestions of TICC directors and some members, has enabled TICC to promptly respond to a Thai government request to all Chambers of Commerce for input to a new business development plan, aimed at quickly revitalizing the economy. It is not appropriate for us to comment on Thai political issues, but it is o.k. to observe that the installation of a new military-lead government seems to have substantially resolved the business administration and project approval issues that had been hindering normal business for months. As reports in the foreign media tend to be quite negative, it is also appropriate in my view for all of us to reassure our business contacts that business conditions in Thailand are just fine. This issue of INFORMA is focused on the Boating Industry. Thailand coast and position make it a perfect match with the Italian boating industry excellence. In this perspective, the Pattaya Boat Show represent a great opportunity for exhibitors from all over the world to get in touch with the growing ASEAN market. Moving from boats to cuisine, you will also find information on Ospitalità Italiana, an international program that certifies the authenticity of Italian restaurants throughout the world. Award ceremonies took place in Phuket at June end and will take place later on in Bangkok. I hope you will find these articles interesting. Arrivederci, Giacomo Mauri

Overview: The Nautical Tourism Industry in Italy

S

hipbuilding industry represents an important and very dynamic sector for the Italian economy maintaining a leading position in the world scenario despite the global recession started in 2008. Besides the biggest firms, most of the Italian industry is made of small and medium companies that set the standards of the sector by continually developing new technologies and innovations thanks to highly specialized labourers and skills.

If we take a look at the Italian shipbuilding industry we realize that revenues in 2013 were € 1,308,370,000; the 98% of it (€ 1,287,170,000) comes from domestic production while the 2% (€ 21,200,000) comes from sales of imported products. The 93% of the domestic production (€ 1,196,970,000) was sold on foreign

markets, most of which to extra European countries (78%), the 7% left (€ 90,200,000) was placed on internal market. For what concerns the importations, most of the incomes come from European country (92.5%) while the extra EU importations value stands for the 7.5% of the total (€ 19,610,000 and € 1,590,000).

Lots of the companies changed their strategy because of the decreased market demand due to global financial crisis by focusing on recovering lost market shares, products diversification and targeting new customers segments. Beyond the adopted strategy, Italian Nautical Industry continues to benefit from Made in Italy uniqueness and high quality attributes. Italian excellence is well represented especially by innovation in Superyachts segment, Interior Design and Textile features and High – Tech Devices for navigation. If we consider both domestic production and importations of leisure units (recreation boat units) we see that most of the sales are for the foreign markets (92%) with € 1,200,590,000 value. The share of the sales coming from leisure units sold in Italy is the 8% of the total, € 107,780,000.

or on order, a 6.2%increase over the 692 projects in the 2013 Order Book, and also up from the 2012 figure of 728.

Nautical Overall Industry production The Nautical Business has 4 main sectors: shipbuilding, refitting repairing and maintenance, components and optional, engines.

In the upper chart we have the 10 first Superyachts country producers for total length of the units in 2014. By analyzing this chart we realize the power of the Italian shipbuilding whose general lengths projects (35,059 ft, with a 550 ft increase compared to 2013) are equal to the total amount of the projects of the 4 other countries which follow Italy in the ranking.

The total turnover in 2013 for Italian firms was € 2,425,010,000; the 85.3% of it comes from domestic production while the rest from importations. Exportations represent the 76.8% of inner production. The trading balance has a very positive value with € 1,233,050,000. This is to certify how exportation is the base of nautical industry. National production seems to be stable (only -0.6% contraction). Sell on the domestic territory had a -20.7% contraction though, while exportation had a +7.7% increase. After all these numbers we want to focus on Superyacht industry interaction with Thailand market. Thailand coasts and strategic position within south – east area make it a perfect hub for nautical tourism especially the luxury one. In this field Italy can claim a credit for having 7 of the most famous Superyacht brands among the top 20 world builder ranking. If we take a closer look at the global Superyacht industry in 2014 we realize that for the first time since the financial turmoil in 2008 and the record year of 2009 (when 1,008 new orders were recorded), the number of new build projects is higher than that of the previous year. This year’s Global Order Book reveals that 735 new yachts are under construction

Little has changed among the world’s five top yacht builder nations, with Italy still by far number one.

Orders for the largest yachts — those exceeding 328 feet (100 meters) — have grown from 14 projects last year to 19 in 2014.

Among these projects there are four sailing yachts ranging in size from 331 to 482 feet. Overall, projects over 150 feet are slightly up from 2013, 189 in 2014 versus 186 last year, while there are currently 40 projects over 250 feet versus 39 last year. While the big yachts often attract attention, and these multi-year custom projects are good news for shipyards, they represent just a small part of the yacht market. Perhaps one of the most positive trends that we noticed this year is a pick-up in new orders in the 80-to 99-foot segment. This part of the market suffered the most enduring and immediate post recession. From 213 projects in 2013, new orders in this segment grew to 246, a 15.5 increase in one year. The cards have been redistributed among shipyards building semi-production yachts,

Source: The Global Order Book 2014 with an overall and continuing decline in the number of smaller hulls built in Italy (perhaps due to the slow but continuing decrease in the popularity of express cruisers). At the same time we see increasing numbers in the Asian market (including China). These are good news for worldwide shipyards but it also means increased competition from new domestic builders increasingly tapping the local and international markets. Increased competition is felt all around as in 2014 the number of builders worldwide rose for the first time since 2009. Currently 216 yards are building yachts over 80 feet. This growth appears to be driven by producers of smaller yachts who see an opportunity in the megayacht market. As far as the type of boats built, express cruisers (open yachts), which as noted earlier had declined during the financial crises (a trend that may be attributable to fuel and operation costs), have slightly rebounded this year but are still well off the 2009 high mark. In fact the production of new express cruisers is half of what it was before (with 51 new builds in this category versus 103 in 2009). A trend

8

that started post 2009 continues with sailing yachts and expedition-type vessels slowly increasing their market share. Sailing yachts have established a new high with 95 new builds, 11.8 percent more than what it was reported in 2013. Large sportfishers, however, have a life of their own, with erratic numbers that do not seem to follow a particular trend.

maintaining high quality standards. In addition to that, the reputation accumulated during the years make Italy an absolute leader in this field. In this perspective Thailand hub for ASEAN community represents a big opportunity for Italian brands to expand their growing path inside an untouched market with big development potential.

As we can see in the upper chart Azimut/Benetti, San Lorenzo and Ferretti Group dominate the ranking. These 3 Italian firms along with Overmarine, Admiral Technomar, Fipa Group and Cerri Baglietto perfectly show the Italian absolute supremacy in luxury yachts builders. Thailand stands at the 5th position of the ranking with Sunseeker group. All these brands have distributors or dealers in Thailand and most of them will join the Pattaya boat show in November.

In conclusion the future of Italian nautical industry is very bright. Shipbuilding industry has an old tradition in the Mediterranean peninsula that can ensure highly specialized production, excellence in the job organizations plus the ability to absorb the peaks of demand and still

“S

ailing”, according to Henry Beard and Roy McKie, in their Dictionary for Landlubbers (1981), “is the fine art of getting wet and becoming ill while going nowhere at great expense”. What a difference some 35 years make. Given, the Dictionary’s theme still has some validity, in 2013, however, there is an exponential surge in sailing, boating and water sports, world-wide. Thailand, with some of the world’s best coast-lines and waterways, is in the vanguard of this remarkable interest. Regattas up and down the littoral, marinas appearing everywhere and, most importantly, all manner of craft, from kayaks to super maxi yachts are coming to the Kingdom in everincreasing numbers, finding the ambience, warm seas and, not the least, Thai culture and an incomparable human welcoming attitude.

Pattaya, as one of the world’s most-favoured marine resorts, advances a few more knots (to borrow from the marine jargon), this coming November, when the Ocean Marina Yacht Club will hold its third Pattaya Boat Show which will take place 27-30 November at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club. There will be expected over 100 exhibitors from boating, marine tourism, and the leisure and life-style business sectors, from Thailand and overseas. For visitors, of whom about 6,000 are expected, there is a packed program of onshore and on-water activities and entertainment planned. This will include Boat & Yacht Thailand 2014 Conference and International Boat Fishing, lucky draws, cocktail parties and a marina-side beer garden and festival with a live band.

The 2014 Boat Show, will feature the PattyaJomtien environs and will reinforce the Eastern Seaboard as the foremost focus for marine tourism in South East Asia. According to Harbour Master of the Marina, Mr. Scott Finsten: “In recent years, the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show generated THB 90 million revenue for the marine tourism industry. We have expanded the on- water and onshore exhibition area to a total of 2,600 sq.m., and have strong support from exhibitors in marine tourism and life-style business sectors including leading yacht brands, Super Bikes, Super Cars, Luxury Property and many other interested parties”. Ms. Wilaiwan Thawitsri, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business, also participating in the press briefing, revealed that “Thailand is a popular destination for marine tourists with many chartering yachts and enjoying Thailand’s cruising grounds and those of neighbouring countries. Thailand has a well-developed marine infrastructure with international-standard marinas that can cater for all sizes of yachts, quality yacht maintenance services and skilled craftsmen, and combined marine leisure tourism generates considerable revenue for Thailand.” Pattaya has become a top marine tourism destination in Thailand, in large part due to pres-

ence of the world-class Ocean Marina Yacht Club. According to information from the TAT, yacht brokers predict that the number of yachts visiting Thailand will increase dramatically by at least 31.25%, to approximately 2,100 yachts, by 2016. In the overall tourism and hospitality industry, TAT has identified marine tourism as a high-end segment, with marine tourists spending more than regular tourists, staying in five stars resorts and dining in upscale restaurants. They choose to spend on high-end products including fashion, jewelry and accessories, and in general stay in Thailand for longer periods.

United States is expected to increase some 25 per cent next year. As an aside to all the ongoing events, it is worth pointing out that some 20 years ago, the largest production yacht in the world at the time, the 40-metre maxi the Mirabella, built at the Ocean Marina facility by Finland’s Concorde Yachts, was launched – typically towed to the sea by two elephants! Of course, today’s maxis “dwarf” the Mirabella which still thrives around the Mediterranean as a charter.

According to the TAT, Thailand welcomes 110 Super yachts each year and these are the highest tourism spenders. TAT predicts that by 2016, 190 Super yachts will visit Thailand annually, a growth of 72.72%, and generate significant income for Thailand’s marine industry. The Gulf of Thailand’s popularity continues to grow with approximately 8.5 million international tourists per year visiting the three leading tourism destinations of Pattaya, Hua Hin and Koh Samui. This is expected to grow 10% year-on-year, in particular due to the high growth potential of neighbouring countries such Myanmar, Lao, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore and China. Even tourism from the

resort complex and the largest in South East Asia, a short drive from Bangkok and just one hour from Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The world-class marina is complemented by a yacht club, accommodation, fine dining and recreational facilities as well as two luxury residences - San Marino and Ocean Portofino. Ocean Marina has hosted many events and functions, and has been the official venue for leading international events, including CataWorld Cup, 24th SEA Games, Top of the Gulf Regatta for nine consecutive years, as well as large-scale concerts by Grammy, Cool FM and more. NAVIGATION IN THAILAND

T

hailand has a coast of 3,219 kilometers along the Indian Ocean, Andaman Sea and the gulf of Thailand. The mix between the strategic geographic position and the tropical weather makes the Country a perfect place for tourism industry and nautical sector. The vessels industry is still young and flourishing, but Thailand already represents the base for the exportation of yacht and boats, also because of the custom elimination in 2004. The nautical industry includes 4 different touristic harbors; more than 300 companies are active in the building sector, whose 40 foreign societies build large yacht, more than 300 small speedboat societies and more than 20 foreign yacht charter operators. In the Thai nautical sector there are also other players such as importers and dealers, people who make services and reparations and distributors of different components and equipment. There are 8 shipyards with a potential production of 5,000-180,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) and 14 shipyards with capacity of 3,500 GRT (gross register tonnage). The Thai market is partitioned for price and type. In fact the products are differentiated by length and type. The demand comes especially from foreigner tourists, but the internal market starts to develop. The yacht market is based on imported yacht and from 2012, yacht sector represents 8% of all the boats in Thailand and sailing boats are the biggest slice of the imports. The main companies are Austhai Marine, one of Asia’s leading boat builders; Seat boat; RB Power and sailing; Montebello and Andaman Boatyard whose owner is Italian. The main yacht builders are Concordia Yachting, Hans Christian Yacht and Sinthana Craft. The main yacht producers are Bakri Cono Pty; Pantawee Marine Co.; Naga Marine & Leisure (Thailand) Co. and Serenity Shipyard. The Italian product is partially spread in the market because the elements of the Italian style and design are recognized only in the luxury niche market. Italian entrepreneurs, through their tradition and experience, should try penetrating the Thai market with the idea of helping the local nautical industry and widening in the A.S.E.A.N.

12

The low labor and material costs, together with the skilled technicians and craftsmen and the professional interior decorators, make Thailand the perfect destination for building yachts and vessels. The Country is famous for having the world’s best silk and rattan furniture, both used for the luxury yacht interior. International actors could benefit from the office networks created in order to communicate easily with international clients. The price politics changes between different operators, but usually the product is offered in a package that includes other correlated services. Furthermore the Board of Investment guarantees different fiscal subsidies, such as exemptions from import customs or from society’s profits, in order to attract and facilitate the foreign investments, as well as it assures to foreign investors the possibility to have 100% of the company’s shares and of the land’s property for the production. The foreign vessels can be used for tourism, sport and relaxing but not for business aim. The benefit from having a Thai registered boat is that you can use it also for business or fishing activities in Thailand. If your boat is less than 10 tones you can use it without registration also for business purpose, but you need permission. Buying a boat could be a complex operation because it needs to follow the registration process and it needs a selling contract. The selling success derives from different promotional activities such as annual fairs and boat-races, advertising in specialized magazines, website and media, services for the clients such as journey in the tourist places, luxury car transfers and hotels. International events such as the Phuket King’s Cup, modern infrastructures such as the Royal Phuket Marina Exhibition, Conference Centre, the Boat Thai and the Pimex fair characterize the Thai nautical sector. The Pimex is the premium boat show in the South-East region and it plays a central role in Thailand and Asia's marine industry as a meeting place, but also as a sales and marketing platform for marine leisure businesses. Through a global marketing campaign, the Pimex raises awareness of Phuket and Thailand to a worldwide audience. Another fair is the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, launched in 2012 for the first time and one of the most prestigious expositions in the nautical sector where yacht expositors from all

around the world participate. The exposition is at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club. Participating in the Phuket International Boat Show is the best opportunity to gain access to the fast growing marine industry in South East Asia. For firms which are new to the region, the show offers a perfect platform to access a considerable group of companies and local representatives operating in the sector and net worth individuals from Asia. A large range of exhibitors participate in the show making it an impressive showcase of boats, equipment, accessories and marine services. All these factors put together make the Thai market really attractive and interesting for the expansion of the Italian nautical business and they are perfect for the development of the sector in all the Asian area. The choice of Thailand as a country where to settle is today winning because the nautical industry has already its own development based on the government agency support, the foreign entrepreneur confidence and the tourism industry. Furthermore Phuket is defined as the Asia marine capital, Thailand is becoming the maritime place of Asia and the nautical industry is seen as a priority activity for the Country development. Thinking about the future prospective, we can forecast that after 2015, with the future agreements between Asia and EU, many companies would enter the Thai market as well as the other A.S.E.A.N. In order to establish a good position and be ready for the future opportunities that the future political scenario will create, it is advisable for EU companies to enter this market, especially Thailand, as soon as possible. BUSSINESS OPPORTUNITY

OCEAN MARINA PATTAYA BOAT SHOW 2014: Business Opportunity in the Nautical Sector

O

cean Marina Yacht Club has played host to Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show 2013. It is recognized as a huge success with a considerably number of visitors and media. This year’s in one of the favorite attractions for Bangkokians and Pattayasiders with more than 4,000 visitors expected to turn out for the venue‘s largest annual exhibition. According to the national and international media, response has been positive with the recreational boating committing to the event in earnest. The show has substantially grown in its second year which it is definitely further developed in this coming edition. The multi-million dollar line-up of boats, supercars and bikes, luxury properties, marine products and services and more, attracted 4,334 visitors last year. Expatriates from Thailand and Asia, together with Thai nationals who are showing an increasing interest in the marine leisure lifestyle were among the attendees. This international trade fair provides global exposure to Thai and Italian companies with an overall 11,650-square-metre space and 112 brands joining the exhibition. As the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC) has a privileged connection with Ocean Marina management, TICC is able to provide contacts for the members who want to join the boat show. The activities in the event are such as the 4-day shows from free yachting, test drive for super cars, bikes, boats, test for kayaks and paddles to lucky draw tree, games stations, fashion / special shows, networking cocktail party, marine forum, etc. With thriving marinas across South East Asia, this is the symbol for excitement in this region about the potential of yachting industry. Based on the confidence that pleasure boats will become one aspect of East Asia’s expanding upper and middle-class life style, it is believed that this industry continually grows. We are committed to carry out the significant market platforms to meet the industry’s achievement and explore new market segment. Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show continually sets the criterion by targeting the right visitors. We look forward to welcome you to Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show 2014 which will be held at Ocean Marina Yacht Club from 27th to 30th November 2014.

BANGKOK: THE VENICE OF THE EAST

Waterways are what connect the romantic Venice and the dynamic Bangkok

Venice, Rialto Bridge over Grand Canal

C

anals seem to be the peculiarity that has silently followed the development of Venice and Bangkok throughout the centuries, becoming a special and unique meeting point between Italy and Thailand. The historical Italian city rose on a total of 118 islands of the Venetian Lagoon that were then connected by a large number of wooden and stone bridges. Venice has always played a fundamental role in the Italian history for what concerns commercial trade, representing the beating heart of commercial hubs between merchant travellers and therefore connecting the country with the rest of the world. This interaction became even stronger after Marco Polo’s journey in the Far East in 1271. Goods and products were transported along the infinite number of canals that rapidly turned into the symbol image of the City. Especially during the 17th and 18th century, Venice’s canals became fascinating subjects for several Italian painters and artists that captured the glimpses of the Venetian everyday life, as Canaletto (1697-1768) did. Over the centuries, Venice’s waterways were mainly used as standard roads connecting

14

Bangkok, Rama VIII Bridge over Chaopraya River different parts of the city. Nowadays there are hundreds of gondole trafficking the canals – typical Venetian boats that in a certain way remind of the Thai ones– carrying out tourists for wonderful sightseeing all around the city. Also local habitants usually make use of different kind of transportations such as small ferries to move from one side of the city to another. The canals and gondole of Venice reflect and represent the ancient marine culture and tradition deeply intrinsic in its population, keeping alive its past and exalting its beauty. Despite the distance, it seems that a common history shaped an Asian counterpart situated in the heart of the South-East Asia, Bangkok. “The Venice of the Far East – the capital still wrapped in mystery, in spite of the thousand efforts of modernism amid its maze of canals...” That is what Salvatore Basso, a young, adventurous and intelligent Italian nobleman wrote of Bangkok when he first saw it on the eve of the coronation of King Vajiravudh, Rama Vl of Thailand, in 1911. By the time Basso first saw Bangkok, its canals system had almost already reached its current shape. Since their origins, most of the Thai cities were pro-

tected by moats. Bangkok’s first waterways originated after the creation of Rattanakosin island - original centre of Bangkok and home of the Grand Palace - by King Rama I who administered the digging of a wide moat and linked it with the Chao Praya River in 1782. In the following years other canals had been created, giving birth too extraordinary trade possibilities and to a completely new way of moving around. The canal system kept evolving during the centuries, becoming nowadays one of the main symbols of the “the City of Angels”, Bangkok. The enlargement of “its maze of canals”, as Basso would say, contributed in the process of modernization faced by Bangkok in the last decades, but it also is the cause of the mysterious and surreal atmosphere that still characterizes “the Venice of the East”. In these two so diverse but so similar cities, canals shaped the course o f time resembling what has been while approaching to the future. GIM Italy 2014: Focus on the Italian High quality

F

or the first time arrives in Italy the GIM project; GIM – which stands for Global Initiatives in Management – it’s a resource management program that belongs to the prestigious curriculum of the Kellogg Business School in Pennsylvania, which thanks to its co-operation with the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business in Bangkok, has been active in the South-East of Asia since 1982. This current year, in February, a group of students from the Sasin Business School was able to visit Italy and some of its most important business realities. This was possible through the co-operation between the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce and other Italian Institution operating in Thailand such as the Italian Embassy, the Italian Institution for foreign Trade (I.C.E) and the cultural association Dante Alighieri. The whole projects sprang up after a meeting arranged at the end of October 2013 by Alfonso Pellegrino, Italian student at the Sasin Business School and Project Manager of the

GIM Italy 2014. The parts involved in the meeting were Mr. Giovanni Quaratesi, Secretary General of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Michele Tomea its Trade Manager, and the University. Afterwards, the Chamber of Commerce has organized a series of educational meetings with Italian firms operating in different business sectors such as: Food & Beverage (especially firms with a leading edge on Marketing and Packaging), businesses providing machineries for the manufacturing segment (textile, food packaging and paper processing), automotive and other Made in Italy leading sectors as fashion and furniture. Among the main speakers, throughout the ten lectures organized before the Italian trip, there are: Mr. Franceso Milicia, Managing Director for Ducati Thailand, who is managing the only Ducati factory outside Italy; Mr. Giacomo Mauri, President of the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Andrea Speronello, First Secretary of the Italian Embassy in Bangkok, Mr. Alessandro Ursic, former President of the

Dante Alighieri Association, Mr. Vincenzo Cali’ departing director of the Italian Institution for foreign Trade. Furthermore the students were also invited at the Italian Embassy in Bangkok, where they were welcomed by the Ambassador Mr. Francesco Saverio Nisio. Main purpose of the field trip is to acquire knowledge and know-how to be later on conveyed to the Thai business community, in order to strengthen the trade relationships between Italy and Thailand. Later on, during the second part of the educational project, the delegation composed by twenty students, coming from the Thai entrepreneurial elites, have visited Italy from 18th of February until March 1st stopping in Milan, Monza, Venice, Boulogne, Florence and Orvieto. Among the visits that have been particularly appreciated by the students stand out the trip in Monza, arranged by the Chamber of Commerce of Monza, where the students had the chance to meet big firms such as Molteni e C and Gruppo Meregalli. The field-trip at the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale, where the students observed the assembly line of different models. Accademia Italiana in Florence where the students took part in an interesting lecture regarding the Italian Fashion Industry and where they could also observe how professionals operate in the fashion labs. Lastly, are also noteworthy the business visits at the Barberani cellars and Bottega Conticelli both located in Orvieto. BUSSINESS FOCUS

A GOOD WHINE By wine n’ about

F

inding a good glass of wine in Southeast Asia was not easy or cheap some years ago.

Even today, if you fancy a glass of wine in Southeast Asia, you will mostly likely be served up an import - because in the humid, temperate climate, vineyards are not common in the region. A significant number of wine drinkers in Thailand lack a thorough knowledge of wines, so low to medium-priced level wines (below US$40) retail hold the biggest market share of about 70 percent. This price level targets middle-income classes who possess higher education levels and higher spending power. Another factor persuading consumers to purchase wines are attractive packaging and labeling because it adds value to wine as a gift item. Wine is now becoming a popular Thai gift for special occasions and festivals. With limited purchasing power for some consumers, Thai consumers typically are willing to pay an average of $23-29 (Baht 800 – 1,000) per bottle of wine. Most view $14 (Baht 500) as the minimum price for good taste and good quality wine in red wine and white wine. Middle-aged consumers as well as white collar workers are the main target groups and are expected to see the strongest growth in wine consumption. Thai consumers are likely to become more familiar with wine and a wine culture is expected to develop further in the country as wine consumption increases gradually. More than half of the wine consumption in Thailand is ascribable to tourists, making the wine sector deeply connected to the HORECA and, generally to the tourist sector. Wine events usually host more foreigners than others, particularly French and Italians. Targeting these customers, and their averagely higher expertise on wine, is vital for everybody approaching the sector. Every winery needs to think not only about retail distribution but also about the HORECA (Hotels, Restaurants and Catering). Wine has penetrated the Thai market in recent years and has achieved a high level of acceptance among Thai consumers. Wine consumption has increased at the expense of other alcoholic beverages and is being served at almost every social function. Wine, with its associated image of Western sophistication, is starting to turn some - although only a few in reality - Thai middle class from beer and whisky drinkers into more ‘sophisticated' wine drinkers. Upmarket wine bars are

16

springing up around Bangkok to cater for this shift, and the local interest. Money to be made? According to the Asian Development Bank, Thailand's middle class is ballooning. A total 17.6 million Thais from 70 million joined the middle classes between 1990 and 2014. There are several Thai companies importing premium wines from around the world, including Italy varietals for Thai consumption. A glance at the wine list reveals a business clearly oriented to elite consumers. They would have to be aiming for a prestige market because of the cost of production and labor intensiveness. As globalisation increases so does the spread of interest in wine, especially with the growing middle-classes in the developing world. There has been a shift away from wine production and consumption in the so-called ‘old world' (France, Italy, Spain) towards both

the ‘new world' regions (such as New Zealand), and emerging or developing regions. China, for example, now produces more wine than Australia, Argentina or South Africa, and consumes more than Spain or the United Kingdom. About the author: Wine n’ about aims at creating the most advanced and engaging digital marketing & social media platform in the world of wine that will entertain, engage and educate the readers, from the wine producers to the consumers. Combining our wine expertise with publishing, media and technology knowledge and competencies, we aim at capturing readers & followers through visual, fun and educational contents about wine values; engaging them through a journey from discovery to trust and appreciation of what wine world can offer; foster them into wine lovers, avid readers and loyal customers. We wanted to target this group of 25-to-40year-olds who are just obsessed with eating and drinking and going out. This demo is omni-saturated. They want to read about wine in these other contexts. You want to go to this party and have a really good time, but you want to look informed. Overall, though, most of wine n’ about so far skews considerably more towards the substantial than the fluff, as we don’t want to underestimating the audience. There will be also longer articles for them to read as well but still keep the fun vibe along the way.

EASTERN SEABOARD COMMITTEE

THE ROYAL VARUNA YACHT CLUB: AN OASIS IN A CONCRETE DESERT By Peter Cummins, special correspondent, Pattaya Mail

A

re you tired of the constant political and social chaos, traffic jams, air pollution and sundry other faults of the great metropolis? Try a little sea-side relaxation: sailing, swimming, watching the sunset in a blaze of gold; or, simply “forget about life for a while”. The Royal Varuna Yacht Club could well be the panacea you need! For a brief over-view of this relatively unsung “coin de paradis”, read on.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The title VARUNA is derived from Sanskrit and is one of the deities in the Hindu pantheon, denoting god of the wind, amongst many other natural phenomena. The title has appeared in many guises, with several old classics listed in the Lloyd’s Register of Yachts, modern transoceanic voyagers and racers and even in the cosmos, where Varuna is one of Pluto’s moons. The Royal Varuna Yacht Club, was “launched” originally as the Varuna Marine Club, in July 1957. Of course, an Italian was a founding member. Roberto Maestrini who was one of several people who answered an advertisement in the Bangkok Post, in April, 1957, “for boating friends to form a boating club”. Roberto, an avid dinghy sailor, became commodore of the club in 1972. It was Swiss national Walter Meyer who initiated this convocation of “luminaries” and, indeed, presided over the very first meeting of the fledgling club, on the second of August, 1957. Walter himself, was a power-boat aficionado and envisioned a club to promote “all water sports, including power-boating, water-skiing, scuba diving and, of course, sailing, cruising and yacht racing.” The Club was officially opened on 15 February, 1958, at a beach-side property on the South Pattaya shoreline facing the absolutely pristine, sparkling waters of the Gulf. Sound like the Pattaya littoral today?

The access to the Club too, is totally different to the early days. The journey from Bangkok used to be a drive of up to six hours, with a car ferry across the Bang Prakong River and carrying all the supplies needed for a weekend at the beach – including charcoal for cooking. A Singha beer was 6 Baht!!! Founding member Prince Bhisadej Rajani, was the “force majeur” in promoting sailing and yacht-racing and it was he who interested HM the King in sailing, racing and building dinghies. His Majesty, as is well known, became a very adept helmsman and, in fact, won a Gold Medal racing the OK dinghy he had built himself, in the South East Asian Peninsular Games (now, the SEA Games), in 1967. His Majesty’s prowess as a helmsman and his keen interest in sailing, were the dominating factors in the development of the Marine Club. The 25th of April, 1965, was a day of momentous fortune for the Club. On that day, at a formal reception at the Klai Kangwol Palace, in Hua Hin, His Majesty bestowed Royal Patronage on the Varuna Marine Club which then became known as the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, one of the Asian region’s foremost sailing and yacht racing venues. Many happy occasions were high-lighted at the Pattaya foreshore, when the King, the Queen and members of the Thai Royal Family gathered and often welcomed Thai and visiting dignitaries. On one such weekend, in March. 1965, the guests included Denmark’s Princess Margretha, UK’s Royal Consort, Prince Phillip, MC Bhisadej Rajani, Prince Birabongse Bhanubandh, Dr Rachot Kanjanavanit and the Portugese Ambassador to Thailand. Of course, a race around Koh Larn was held, but the placings, because of diplomatic protocol, were not revealed.

Dr Rachot Kanjanavanit, the Fourth Commodore (1967-1970) was a man of great vision and he saw the insidious “march” of concrete engulfing Pattaya and the environs, as a clear threat to Varuna which was becoming an “oasis in a concrete desert”. Dr Rachot moved the club to its present beautiful, uncluttered sea-side location, over Pratumnak Hill, facing west to Koh Larn, guaranteeing superb sunsets. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn officially opened the new club-house, ensconced on the same 10-rai of land, in April, 2005

FAST FORWARD

Royal Varuna has had to move quickly forward, too, as the leviathan concrete monsters sprout everywhere. It is, after all, a yacht club, catering mainly to the advent of fibre-glass dinghies and super-fast catamarans. There are no keel-boats, water scooters or para-sails at the premises, but a restaurant, bar service and unfettered 180-degree vistas from the spacious club-house and accommodation take the place of these. With a membership of some 500, comprising more than 20 nationalities, Varuna has hosted a great number of world championships, fosters training programmes and has constantly nurtured junior sailing up to Olympic standards. New developments have been the Club’s magnificent sea-front facilities, acting as a venue for companies conducting training courses, chambers of commerce “net-working” evenings, birthdays and, even, weddings. These events are so well after that there is a waiting list.

FINALLY

This then is a “thumb print” of one of the few places in a cluttered concrete world, where one can enjoy Nature’s rewards, great friendship and just “re-charge” the batteries

Planning a Trip to the Land of Smiles? A Beginner’s Guide on Visa Regulations for Tourists

W

ith its majestic golden palaces, vibrant floating markets and aweinspiring temples, it is unquestionable why Thailand has been able to attract millions of tourists year after year. If you are thinking about making Thailand your next getaway by any chance, you should familiarize yourself with Thailand’s visa and immigration regulations for tourists to avoid potential trip-ups when you travel. Here are some of the key issues that you should be aware of.

Do You Even Need a Visa?

This is obviously the most important question. You have to find out whether or not a visa is required prior to booking sea or air travel as you may be denied boarding if you do not have a valid visa and you may not be able to get a full refund for the ticket bought. You can verify this easily by visiting the web site of the relevant Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate located in your country or the official web site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (“MFA”), which is available at http://www.mfa.go.th/main/ en/services/123. In any case, you should know that Thailand has a tourist visa exemption scheme that allows tourists who are citizens of almost fifty countries including Australia, Canada, France, Italy, and the US, to travel to Thailand without a visa (see the comprehensive list on the MFA’s web site). However, there is also a requirement that tourists who are eligible for such an exemption must be able to show sufficient funds to support their stay. This could range from THB 10,000 for an individual tourist and THB 20,000 for a single family of tourists. The period of stay under the visa exemption scheme is generally 30 days, but this can be reduced to a duration of 15 days if tourists enter Thailand via the immigration checkpoints located along the Thai borders. The period of stay can be up to 90 days for nationals of countries having international bilateral agreement with Thailand, e.g., Argentina, Brazil, Chile, South Korea, and Peru. Moreover, holders of diplomatic or official passports are generally granted similar visa exemption privileges and

18

are entitled to stay in Thailand from 30 to 90 days, depending on their nationality.

Tourist Visa or Visa on Arrival (VOA)?

Tourists who are not entitled to enjoy the privileges under Thailand’s visa exemption scheme must apply for a tourist visa at the designated Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. Tourist visa applicants must also show sufficient funds of THB 10,000 or THB 20,000 to support their stay as already mentioned, produce other supporting documentations, and pay a fee of THB 1,000. The tourist visa is valid for 3 to 6 months upon issuance. This is not to be confused with the period of stay, which is 60 days upon arrival. Nevertheless, tourists who hold a passport issued by certain countries, such as China, India, Russia, and Saudi Arabia (see the comprehensive list also available on the MFA’s web site), may apply for a visa on arrival or VOA at any location of the immigration checkpoints throughout Thailand. The sufficient funds requirement also applies to this type of visa and there is a visa fee of THB 1,000. The period of stay for the visa on arrival is only 15 days and is relatively short compared to the tourist visa, so it might be a good idea for long-term travelers to consider seeking a tourist visa instead. In addition, VOA applicants must present fully paid return ticket that is valid within 15 days since the date of entry as well.

Extending Your Stay

Prior to the end of the period of stay, tourists who have a valid tourist visa may apply for a 30-day extension of their stay by filing an application at the immigration office and paying an extension fee of THB 1,900. Tourists who are granted visa exemption privileges or have a visa on arrival may also apply for an extension by filing a similar application and paying the same amount of extension fee. Nevertheless, according to the current immigration practices, these tourists will be granted a 7-day extension only. Furthermore, applications for an extension of stay are also subject to the sole discretion of the relevant immigration officer, which means that it is not always guaranteed

that an extension will be granted.

Is Doing a Part-time Job OK?

This is definite a no-no even if it is only a parttime job. Doing any type of work while holding a tourist visa or visa on arrival is prohibited and violators are subject to a maximum prison term of 1 year, or a maximum fine of THB 10,000, or both. If you would like to work in Thailand, you must apply for an appropriate type of visa, i.e., the non-immigrant type “B” visa, and a work permit as required by the law before you can start working.

What if You Overstayed?

Overstaying is one of the common problems encountered by many travelers and overstayers are subject to a daily fine of THB 500 with a maximum ceiling of THB 20,000. Even though overstaying is a criminal offense, overstayers can simply pay their fine at any of the immigration offices located throughout the country and they will be granted permission to leave Thailand. However, those who refuse to pay or are unable to pay the fine will be detained, put on trial before a Court, and, if convicted, deported to their home country.
