Children’s catalogue

July–December 2024

This season we’re celebrating art’s ability to inspire, nurture and entertain.

Award-winning performance poet Joseph Coelho brings his genius to a special collection of bedtime poems that are each inspired by a famous work of art. Including works by Vincent van Gogh, Faith Ringgold and David Hockney among others, Goodnight Starry Night is the perfect way to find calm after a busy day. Vincent and his brother Theo also star in Michael Bird and Ella Beech’s charming picture book Dear Vincent, which takes as its cue the collection of letters exchanged between the van Gogh brothers. It is a heart-warming snapshot of a happy and creative period in van Gogh’s life.

We have practical inspiration for aspiring young manga artists and mini architects alike among our offering of activity books, and a gripping read in the hotly anticipated sequel to Miss Cat – everyone’s new favourite graphic novel heroine.

T&H Gift Lab have partnered with the inimitable Yuval Zommer to create two family games that make learning addictively fun. Bugtastic Bingo and The Big Belly of the Whale jigsaw puzzle are perfect for family game nights and rainy autumn days.

The Girl and the Robot Heart

Gracefully told by Neal Hoskins, and featuring exquisite artwork by award-winning illustrator

Monika Vaicenaviciene, The Girl and the Robot Heart is a beautiful exploration of what makes us human

Glorious artwork combines with lyrical poetry in this Christmas-themed celebration of storytelling. Set in a sleepy town on Christmas Eve, the story begins with a conversation between a girl and her toy robot, who wants to know what’s inside a human heart. Describing it as a series of rooms filled with storybooks, the girl sets about building the robot a heart of its own by telling stories about the quiet little town she calls home.

Beautifully designed and adorned with decorative blocking and gold foil on the cover, this tender story has a powerful message that will warm the hearts of readers all year round.

Neal Hoskins has an MA in creative writing from Bath Spa University and his fictions have appeared in The Stinging Fly, Ambit and 14 Magazine. This is his first picture book. Monika Vaicenavičienė is an awardwinning illustrator and picture book creator from Lithuania. Her book What is a River? was the winner of the 2018 World Illustration Awards, among others, and is published in fifteen languages. She has an MFA in Visual Communication from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm.

When a little girl falls on the street, scraping her knee, her father tells her not to worry, that ‘a beautiful scab will form’. But she does worry! The scab is not beautiful and it’s keeping her from bending her knee! When will it ever go away? By the time the scab – who she has named Pepper – falls off, something astonishing has happened: the girl has come to feel affection for the scab and has a hard time letting go.

Are Wolves Afraid of the Dark?

Intrepid readers are invited on a field trip into the wild to discover whether wolves are as big and as bad as we think they are

For many people, wolves are the stuff of nightmares and horror films, but the reality is that they’re among some of the most vulnerable wild animals on our planet.

By following field guide Huw Lewis Jones and nature illustrator Sam Caldwell into the wild, readers will meet subspecies of grey wolf living in forests throughout Europe, North America and China, as well as red wolves in North Carolina and other members of the canid family, including coyotes. Along the way, aspiring naturalists will discover the difference between a ‘timber’ and a ‘tundra’ wolf, what traits wild wolves share with domestic dogs and why wolf poo is so important to scientists!

Through entertaining and informative text and expressive illustrations, Are Wolves Afraid of the Dark? challenges the stereotype of the ‘big, bad wolf’, passed down to us through fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, and shows that wolves are intelligent, sensitive creatures with far more to fear from us than we have from them.

Keratin

Keratin is a protein – a large molecule that comes in different versions and is produced by many animals. There are two main types of keratin: alpha and beta. Alpha-keratin is made by vertebrates. It forms in strands and is the type of keratin that makes up hair, fur, wool, nails, feathers, hooves and horns. Betakeratin forms in sheets and is only made by reptiles and birds. It makes up tortoiseshells and bird beaks. As you know from washing your hair or going swimming, keratin doesn’t dissolve in water.
