FUEL 515 illustrations 22.0 x 18.0cm 240pp | Paperback 978 0 995 745599 January | £24.95

A nostalgia trip through the sweet wrappers of our childhoods: a massive, magical blast from our pasts – all in one beautiful graphic book.

Jonny Trunk; Edited by Damon Murray and Stephen Sorrell; Foreword by Jarvis Cocker

Wrappers Delight This is a book crammed full of the sweetest memories of all – a favourite gum, addictive chews, that sparkling drink you can’t remember the name of, those stickers you collected and of course your lolly of choice. Think Cider Barrel, Cresta, Tip Top, Pacemakers, Lollygobblechocbomb, Kung Fueys, Fizz Bang, and loads of TV tie-ins: Furry Friends and even Fingammies! And then there are the treats you’ll only recall when you see the packaging for the first time in decades. Wrappers Delight catalogues the amazing, lifetime collection of John Townsend, a man who collected the most disposable of wrappers: sweet cigarette boxes, wax gum papers, empty bags of crisps, drink cans, rock labels, coupons, recipe cards, tickets, badges, stickers, and more. All these items have been carefully documented and reproduced here in the highest quality. Presented in alphabetical order by manufacturer, and with over 500 full colour examples, this book is the first and only overview of the drinks and confectionery industry during this period. 2

Nostalgia enthusiast Jonny Trunk founded his record label, Trunk Records, in 1995, which specialises in releasing lost and archived recordings. He compiled and wrote The Music Library and Own

Label. He has worked with Oliver Postgate, Derek Griffiths, Tony Hart and other celebrated artists. Jonny also writes for a number of magazines and broadcasts every week on Resonance FM. Jarvis Cocker, Pulp’s frontman, is one of Britain’s most recognisable and treasured figures.

A new book in FUEL’s highly popular and collectable Russian series.

Jason Guilbeau; Edited by Damon Murray and Stephen Sorrell; Introduction by Clem Cecil

Soviet Signs and Street Relics French photographer Jason Guilbeau has used Google Street View to virtually navigate Russia and the former USSR, searching for examples of a forgotten Soviet empire. The subjects of these unlikely photographs, captured by serendipity rather than design, are accorded a common vernacular. Once found, he strips the images of their practical use by removing the navigational markers, transforming them into his own vision. The photographs reveal traces of history in plain sight: a Brutalist hammer and sickle stands in a remote field; a jet fighter is anchored to the ground by its concrete exhaust plume; a skeletal tractor sits on a cast-iron platform. Relinquished by the present, these objects have become part of the composition of everyday life, too distant in time and too ubiquitous in nature to be recorded by anything other than an indiscriminate automaton.

4

This collection of photographs portrays a surreal reality: it is a document of a vanishing era, captured by an omniscient technology that is continually deleting and replenishing itself – an inadvertent definition of Russia today. Jason Guilbeau is a photographer who lives and works in Strasbourg. Damon Murray and Stephen Sorrell have been publishing books on Soviet culture since 2004, from the

Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia to Soviet Bus Stops. Clem Cecil is a Russian speaking specialist in language, literature and architectural preservation, with many years’ experience working in Russia, initially as correspondent for The Times, then as co-founder of the Moscow Architecture Preservation Society.

‘In recent years I have found myself working increasingly in sequences of drawings which explore subjects and techniques which interest me. These sequences are the origins of the QB Papers; they vary in approach and tone, and between reality and fantasy. But I hope that each of them in its own way will appeal to anyone who likes looking at drawings.’ – Quentin Blake

Linear 978 1 913119 03 4 It may have been an accident that I drew a man looking at a line on the floor. After that I drew a lot more. I thought it became almost like a simple, tiny animated film.

On the Wing 978 1 913119 04 1 I have always liked to draw people flying, in all sorts of ways. These are moments of everyday life transferred to the air.

20 Bald Men 978 1 913119 07 2 I drew all these in bed one morning. I’m not sure why I chose this kind of person, but the interest for me is the variations on a fixed set of features.

Wildlife Artists of the Year 978 1 913119 06 5 I have many pictures of people drawing animals or (more often) birds. Here they are simply adapted to provide a handful of visual jokes.

Chance Encounters 978 1 913119 11 9 I enjoy drawing rocky landscapes with people riding through them on eccentric vehicles; and so of course it’s natural that some of them should meet. 7

The Mouse on a Tricycle 9781913119027 Heaven knows how I thought of a mouse on a tricycle – it’s just there in one of my notebooks somewhere. Of course the point is not it, but the range of reactions of the onlookers. A bit more theatre.

The Alternative Sports Olympics 9781913119058 I’ve never been any good at sport. I just liked the idea of adapting Olympic events to everyday life – so if you’re throwing something, it’s the luggage.

Deliveries from Elsewhere 9781913119164 Elsewhere gives me the opportunity to draw bearded men on the kind of eccentric manywheeled vehicles that I enjoy drawing. The items being delivered are everyday ones such as we might order – slightly changed.

Feet in the Water 9781913119140 My interest in this came originally from doing it myself, whether in Hastings or on the Atlantic Coast of France. But I also like drawing those surroundings and the reflections in the water.

The New Dress 9781913119188 I had an idea about doing some drawing of costume, called Modest Attire, and then somehow it divided itself into two. One is this - improvised costumes of material of no importance.

Available

The Art Conversation 9781913119003 Some of the things I most enjoy drawing – a gamut of gestures and expressions remembered from everyday life. The spectator is very welcome to imagine what it is they are saying to each other.

Riders by Night 9781913119126 This is fantasy – the opportunity of exploiting the decorative and atmospheric effects of moonlight and some very strange steeds.

Constant Readers 9781913119133 This is rather like the conversation pictures in that it shows the positions that people get into when reading – but it’s more specific and ‘observed’ in that it shows different individual reactions.

A Comfortable Fit 9781913119157 This is the other half of Modest Attire, in which everything got far too large and probably very warm, and I had the pleasure of dealing with gesture and texture.

Scenes at Twilight 9781913119171 It helps to know how to do a soft edge to the sky to suggest the twilight, and I imagine that we are silent observers of participants, unaware of our presence.

Dorothea Lange Words & Pictures

Toward the end of her life, Dorothea Lange (American, 1895–1965) remarked that “all photographs – not only those that are so-called ‘documentary’ . . . can be fortified by words.” Though Lange’s career is widely heralded, the connection she made between words and pictures has received scant attention. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at MoMA, this catalogue provides a fresh approach to some of her best-known photographs, such as White Angel Breadline and Migrant Mother, as well as rarely seen works. An introductory essay by curator Sarah

10

Hermanson Meister is followed by sections organised according to “words” from a range of historical contexts: Lange’s landmark photobook An American Exodus, Life, Aperture magazines, an illustrated guide to minimising racism in jury selection, and many more. Also included are original contributions from contemporary writers, artists, and critical thinkers. Sarah Hermanson Meister is Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Judd

Published to accompany the first US retrospective exhibition of Donald Judd’s sculpture in more than thirty years, Judd explores the work of a landmark artist who, over the course of his career, developed a material and formal vocabulary that transformed the field of modern sculpture. This richly illustrated catalogue takes a close look at Judd’s achievements, and, using newly available archival materials at the Judd Foundation and elsewhere, expands

scholarly perspectives on his work. The essays address subjects such as his beginnings in painting, the fabrication of his sculptures, his site-specific pieces, and his work in design and architecture. Félix Fénéon The Anarchist and the Avant-Garde

This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition to pay tribute to Félix Fénéon (1861–1944), the French art critic, editor, dealer, collector, and anarchist. Though largely forgotten today and always behind the scenes in his own day, he had an extraordinary impact on the development of modernism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Operating at the nexus of avant-garde aesthetics and radical politics, he played a key role in the careers of leading artists including Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Pierre Bonnard, and Henri Matisse, and in the reception of African art in Europe. The centerpiece of the project is Signac’s 1890 portrait of Fénéon, a masterpiece in MoMA’s collection.

12

The exhibition and catalogue were produced in collaboration with the Musées d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie and the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac. A related French catalogue was published in May 2019. Starr Figura is Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Isabelle Cahn is chief curator at the Musée d’Orsay. Philippe Peltie leads the Department of Oceania and Islands of Southeast Asia at the Musée du quai Branly.

Neri Oxman Material Ecology Throughout her twenty-year career, Neri Oxman has pioneered not only new ideas for materials, buildings, and construction processes, but also new frameworks for interdisciplinary – and interspecies – collaborations. A professor of media arts and sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab, she coined the term “material ecology” to describe her process of producing techniques and objects informed by the structural, systemic, and aesthetic wisdom of nature. Oxman’s work is groundbreaking for its solid technological and scientific basis, its rigorous and daring experimentation, its visionary philosophy, and its unquestionable attention to formal elegance.

This book – designed by Irma Boom and published to accompany an exhibition of Oxman’s work – highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the designer’s practice and positions her work within the context of MoMA’s exhibition history and of architecture at large. It demonstrates how Oxman’s contributions allow us to question and redefine the idea of Modernism – a concept in constant evolution – and of organic design. Paola Antonelli is Senior Curator in the Department of Architecture & Design and the Director of Research & Development at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Anna Burckhardt is Curatorial Assistant in The Department of Architecture & Design at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Kynaston McShine

Information 50th Anniversary Edition

In the summer of 1970, the Museum of Modern Art in New York mounted the now legendary exhibition Information, one of the first surveys of conceptual art. Conceived by MoMA’s celebrated curator Kynaston McShine as an ‘international report’ on contemporary trends, the show and attendant catalogue together assembled the work of more than 150 artists from 15 countries to explore the parameters and possibilities of the emerging art practices of the era. Much of the work engaged mass-communications systems, such as broadcast television, and addressed viewers directly. The catalogue functioned autonomously: it included

14

a list of recommended reading, a chance-based index by critic Lucy Lippard, and individual artist contributions in the form of photographic documentation, textual description, drawings and diagrams. This facsimile edition of the original Information catalogue invites re-engagement with MoMA’s landmark exhibition while illuminating the early history of conceptual art. Kynaston McShine, a former curator at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, organized some of the most influential exhibitions of the twentieth century.

Antonio Dias

Record The Space Between

In 1971 Antonio Dias self-published Record: The Space Between, a vinyl LP audio project produced in an edition of just 180 copies, numbered and signed by the artist. The album went on to become internationally influential, yet it remains a work more frequently referred to than actually heard. The idea for Record: The Space Between, the artist said, ‘emerged from waiting for the birth of my daughter. From the room next to where my wife was in labour, I could hear two alternating sounds: her breathing and the tic-tac of a clock.’ Dias structured the record to feature one of those two sounds on each side: side A features a ticking alarm clock; side B is a recording of the artist drawing and

expelling breath between intervals of silence, producing a transfixing continuum. MoMA’s reissue of this early work, just a few months following the artist’s death, takes on an unexpected commemorative interpretation. Record: The Space Between could be said to engender an imaginary immortality or, perhaps, a state of neither existence nor nonexistence – a space between. Included are images of the artist’s original scores and curatorial introductory texts by Lilian Tone and David Platzker. Antonio Dias (Brazilian, 1944-2018) is one of the preeminent artists to emerge in Brazil during the 1960s.

Engineer, Agitator, Constructor The Artist Reinvented

“We regarded ourselves as engineers, we maintained that we were building things,” declared Hannah Höch, describing a radical new approach to artmaking that took shape in the 1920s and ’30s, in lockstep with the era’s shifts in industry and technology, and amid the impact of momentous events: World War I, the Russian Revolution, the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the rise of fascism. Artists involved with avant-gardes – Dada, the Bauhaus, Futurism, Constructivism, and de Stijl – created dynamic art for a new world. This experimentation is richly represented in the Merrill C. Berman Collection, one of the most significant private collections of early-twentieth-century works on paper. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition

16

celebrating MoMA’s acquisition of more than three hundred works from the collection, this richly illustrated book includes close readings of drawings, propaganda posters, advertising, architecture, journals, and theater design. It explores the crucial role of collage and photomontage in the interwar period; the importance of collective authorship; and the impact of political, economic, and social change on visual culture. Jodi Hauptman is Senior Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Adrian Sudhalter is Consulting Curator at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Cardboard Landscapes (Paesaggi di cartone) Luigi Ghirri made Carboard Landscapes (Paesaggi di cartone) early in his career, coining the term “sentimental geography” to describe a unique artistic approach in which the ordinary was worthy of scrutiny. Of his dozens of publications (many of them issued by the art press he ran with his wife), nearly all are now out of print, and few have been translated in English. This book, presented to John Szarkowski in the 1970s, is being published for the first time.

Last West Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange In conjunction with the forthcoming book and exhibition Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures, the acclaimed American poet Tess Taylor has written a poem that responds to Lange’s legacy and their shared interest in their home state of California. Accompanied by reproductions of several of Lange’s photographs, the poem includes quotes from Lange’s notebooks, lyrics from contemporary “roadsongs,” as Taylor calls them, and bits of interviews and other found text. Taylor explores mass migration, climate change, and homelessness, and features the stories of the people impacted by these crises, in keeping with Lange’s

compassionate and richly textured depictions of the human experience. Tess Taylor is the author of three books of poetry, including Work & Days, named one of the 10 best books of poetry of 2016 by the New York Times. 17

Writing the Future Jean-Michel Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation

An illuminating recreation of the moment when graffitibased art moved from city streets to gallery walls, and an exploration of the larger hip-hop culture that gave birth to multiple forms of artistic expression. In the early 1980s, art and writing labeled as graffiti transitioned from New York City walls and subway trains onto canvas and into art galleries. Young artists who freely sampled from their urban experiences and their largely black, Latino and immigrant histories infused the downtown art scene with expressionist, pop and graffitiinspired compositions.

18

Jean-Michel Basquiat was among the best known of these emerging artists. He and his fellow creators – including A-One, Fab Five Freddy, Futura, Keith Haring, Kool Koor, LA2, Lady Pink, Lee Quiñones, Rammellzee and Toxic – became avant-garde leaders infiltrating and reshaping the predominantly white art world. This book captures the energy, inventiveness, and resistance unleashed when hiphop went ‘all city’. Liz Munsell is Lorraine and Alan Bressier Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Greg Tate is a New York– based writer, musician and cultural provocateur.

Arts of South Asia MFA Highlights

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is home to an important collection of artworks from South Asia that spans a large geographical area – comprising India and the countries that surround it – and more than four millennia. Among these objects are expressive figures in bronze and stone, dazzlingly intricate miniature paintings, luxury textiles and exquisite metalwork. Arranged thematically around dualities of art and craft, sacred and secular, Hindu and

Muslim, real and ideal, male and female, and local and foreign – reflecting and challenging the dualistic thinking often applied to South Asian art – these works of art reveal the richness and depth of South Asian art and culture. Tracey Emin | Edvard Munch The Loneliness of the Soul An exploration of the impact of Edvard Munch’s art on Tracey Emin’s artistic approach. Tracey Emin (b. 1963) has long claimed that Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was the artist who had inspired her the most. In her formative years as an artist, it was the expressionism of Munch’s paintings and his uncompromising will to explore the complexity and vulnerability of the human condition that attracted her. This book sheds light on the impact of Munch’s art on Emin’s artistic approach and her expressive repertoire in paintings, sculptures, textiles and neons. It explores the themes of grief, longing and loneliness, especially related

to the ageing process and childlessness. This highlights the similarity between the two artists, as well as the difference between a female and male approach to difficult subjects related to the darker side of human existence, which has changed dramatically from the twentieth century to today. Kari J. Brandtzæg has been a curator at the Munch Museum since 2015, and was previously a curator at Norway’s National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design and at KORO (Public Art Norway). Heidi Bale Amundsen (b. 1983) holds a PhD in art history from the University of Oslo. She is currently the Chair of the Norwegian Critics’ Association and a writer for the art journal Kunstkritikk.

Edvard Munch Pop-Ups Edvard Munch was one of Modernism’s most significant artists. He was active for over sixty years; from the time he made his debut in the 1880s, right up until his death in 1944. Munch was part of the Symbolist movement in the 1890s, and a pioneer of expressionist art from the beginning of the 1900s onward. His tenacious experimentation within painting, graphic art, drawing, sculpture, photo and film has given him a unique position in Norwegian as well as international art history. For the first time you can experience Munch’s most famous works of art as 3D pop-ups. The book showcases The Women on the Bridge, Woman with Poppies, The Building of the Winter Studio, Children in the Forest, The Yellow Log and the iconic Scream, accompanied by explanatory texts and sketches by Munch.

Courtney Watson McCarthy is a paper engineer and graphic designer whose book creations include ABC Pop-Ups, Hokusai

Edited by Melanie Eastburn; Foreword by Michael Brand; Preface by Mami Kataoka

Japan Supernatural Ghosts, Goblins and Monsters 1700s to Now Japan Supernatural takes readers on a journey of discovery of the astonishing array of yokai (supernatural beings) and yurei (ghosts) – from fiendish goblins through to mischievous shapeshifters – that have inhabited Japanese culture for centuries. Once a means to explain the unexplainable, they have been kept alive through folklore, legends and artworks. Over time these creatures and characters have maintained an ongoing presence in Japanese art and society in novels, films, anime, manga and games, ranging from horror to the comical. Essays by Eastburn, Chiaki Ajioka, Zack Davisson, Lucie Folan, Michael Dylan Foster, Komatsu Kasuhiko and Hiroko Yoda, and an interview with Takashi Murakami by Justin Paton, will enlighten and fascinate readers

Inspired by the East how the Islamic world influenced Western art Covering a period from the late fifteenth century to the present day, Inspired by the East sheds light on the complex cultural exchange between these civilisations which has generated a profusion of beautiful objects, perhaps most famously the Orientalist paintings and decorative arts of the nineteenth century. This publication accompanies a major exhibition at the British Museum and the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia in Kuala Lampur, and offers a new perspective on what the Islamic world has meant to Western artists, designers and thinkers. This fresh approach includes the works of Orientalist painters such as Eugène Delacroix, John Frederick Lewis and Ludwig Deutsch.

William Greenwood is Curator at the Zayed National Museum, Abu Dhabi. Lucien de Guise is an author and co-curator of the exhibition Inspired by the East: how the Islamic world influenced Western art. Authors: Professor Ali Behdad, Dr Catherine L. Futter, Dr Mary Kelly (née Healy), Dr William Kynan-Wilson, Briony Llewellyn and John M. MacKenzie.

Reimagining Captain Cook Pacific perspectives On the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s extraordinary voyages of exploration, this publication reflects on and charts the enduring legacies of Cook’s encounters with Pacific peoples. Objects collected and images made on or associated with the voyages are explored alongside artworks created by contemporary artists from the Pacific region. Together, they reveal that understandings of history are rarely agreed and always shifting, while Cook and the impacts of his voyages are reimagined as complex, contentious and unresolved. 26

A Tale of Two Women Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Prado Museum, Madrid, this book draws on about sixty works to survey the paintings of Sofonisba Anguissola (c. 1535– 1625) and Lavinia Fontana (1552–1614). The two artists achieved recognition and fame among their contemporaries for and despite their status as female painters. Both were able to break away from the prevailing stereotypes assigned to women in relation to artistic practice and the deeprooted scepticism regarding women’s creative and artistic abilities. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue will present the work of these two women, whose artistic personalities were to some extent obscured over the course

of time but who have once again aroused the interest of specialists and the public. Leticia Ruiz is Head of the Department of Spanish Renaissance Painting at the Prado Museum, Madrid. She is an art restorer and has a PhD in Art History. She specialises in the work of El Greco and other Spanish masters.

Lorenzo Lotto Portraits Celebrated as one of the greatest portraitists of the Italian Renaissance, Lorenzo Lotto portrayed a cross section of middle-class sitters, among them clerics, merchants and humanists. Lotto depicted men, women and children in compositions rich in symbolism and imbued with great psychological depth. The addition of objects which hinted at the social status, interests, and aspirations of his subjects added meaning to each work. With documents that have survived from Lotto’s own account books, this catalogue provides extraordinary insight into the artist’s individualistic style and the people he portrayed.

Enrico Maria dal Pozzolo is Associate Professor in the History of Art at the University of Verona, specialising mainly on Venetian painting of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He has published widely on Renaissance art and curated several exhibitions.

A celebration of the revival of Japanese ikebana in contemporary floral design, with work by influential and inspiring florists from around the world.

Tom Loxley and Victoria Gaiger

Modern Ikebana A New Wave in Floral Design

If you think of flower arranging as an occupation for florists in pursuit of the perfect dome, think again. Because there is a generation of radical new artists who are reinventing what it means to arrange flowers, many of them inspired by the Japanese art of ikebana. Since its origins in the sixth century, ikebana has been as much a philosophy as an art, with its roots in Zen Buddhism and a reverence for nature. Over hundreds of years it has developed a complex set of unwritten rules that take a lifetime to master. But in recent years the distinctive look of ikebana – with its love of the asymmetric shapes to be found in nature and its willingness to embrace simple, natural materials – has found a new audience and opened the eyes of a generation of artists to a new way of working with flowers. This book showcases a selection of this new wave of floral artists, from Tokyo to New York. The authors Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley have talked to 25 of the 28

most exciting young florists working today about their art and inspiration. It includes an introduction to the history and evolution of Japanese floral art and beautiful images of the artists’ studios and their floral creations. Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley are the founders and editors of the award-winning magazine rakesprogress, the UK’s leading independent magazine about the art of gardens, plants and flowers.

Van Eyck in Detail The Portable Edition

This fascinating book looks at the work of Flemish painter Jan van Eyck (c. 1395–1441) under a magnifying glass. Famed for his focused observation of nature, Van Eyck studied fauna and flora in their natural environment and under carefully chosen light conditions, and then achieved a breathtaking and convincing realism in his paintings. Each panel is a collection of minuscule details rendered with superb clarity from foreground to background, or at least that is the impression at first glance. As this book reveals, that is precisely where Van Eyck’s exceptional talent lies: he understood that the human brain is able to supplement visual perception where necessary.

Here, details from Van Eyck’s paintings are organised by such themes as nature, architecture, daily life, fabrics, glass, jewellery and mirrors, and portraits. Opening with a biographical note and an introduction on the technique of oil painting on panel, the authors explain the significance of the individual details and how Van Eyck achieved his innovative artistic results. Maximiliaan P.J. Martens is Professor of Art History at Ghent University. Annick Born is a researcher at the same university’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Art & Science. Luc Tuymans, who contributed a preface, is a highly regarded contemporary painter with works in major collections around the world.

Working with sculpture and installation, as well as drawing, photography and film, Parker positions her subjects at the very moment of their transformation, suspended in time and completely still.

Victor Willing Visions

Victor Willing (1928–88) established his reputation while at the Slade School of Art in the early 1950s, and was known as the ‘spokesman of his generation’. This is the first monograph in two decades on this overlooked painter. The book covers each decade of his life and career, from his time at the Slade, his life in Portugal with his wife Paula Rego, his return to London in the 1970s, and his untimely death. He was celebrated for his work in the 1970s and 1980s, which present hallucinatory imagery and a personal iconography that reached towards a new language of

34

figuration. This book features work from all aspects of Willing’s artistic practice, including painting, drawing, and sculpture. A text by his close friend, the critic John McEwen, illustrated by works and unseen material from the family archive, considers each phase of the artist’s life. Nicholas Serota is the chair of Arts Council England. Elizabeth Gilmore is Director of Hastings Contemporary. Victoria Howarth is Curator at Hastings Contemporary. Oscar Wilde

Art and Decoration Being Extracts from Reviews and Miscellanies Oscar Wilde was one of the most influential writers on art and design in the late nineteenth century. This exquisite centenary facsimile edition of a posthumous collection that was first published in 1920 brings together some of his most significant writings on art, craft, design, fashion, and decoration. Among them are musings on what makes an artist and what does an artist make; the importance of handicrafts over machine art; radical ideas on the state of fashion; and how to decorate one’s home. His celebrated epigrams are a testament to the brilliant, incisive wit and flamboyant style for which Wilde is known.

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) is regarded as one of the greatest writers and dramatists of the Victorian era. In his lifetime, he wrote nine plays, one novel, and numerous poems, short stories, and essays. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement of the 1880s and 1890s, advocating art for art’s sake.

Connectedness an Incomplete Encyclopedia of the Anthropocene

Today we live in what geologists have named the Anthropocene. The Earth has entered a new geological epoch, and the climate crisis is a reality. The crisis is so substantial and complex that our existing knowledge of environmental disasters is insufficient. Without the realisation that we, as human beings, are intimately connected to all other kinds of life, we are guilty of a collective sin of omission by ignoring the fundamental connectedness of humanity and nature. We are not just part of the same cycle, we are nature. And since everything affects and is affected by everything else, it seems sufficient to consider the Anthropocene from many perspectives and fields.

Connectedness includes a diverse selection of contributions that brings many perspectives and disciplines into the discussion to the crucial period in which we are currently living. Includes contributions from BjĂśrk, Greta Thunberg, Donna Haraway and Tomas Saraceno. Marianne Krogh is a Danish curator, editor and art historian. She holds a PhD from Aarhus School of Architecture and is the Curator of the Danish submission at the 17th International Architecture Biennale in Venice 2020.

Daido Moriyama: A Diary Hasselblad Award 2019

With its generous image flow, this book celebrates Daido Moriyama as the 2019 Hasselblad Award winner and his highly influential, lifelong radical and authentic approach to photography. A Diary points to his continuous, daily photographic expeditions, resulting in an oeuvre charged with fragments, repetitions, chance and chaos. His production of images is enormous, and whereas some photographs have become iconic and reappear in numerous books and exhibitions, it is always possible to encounter more unknown works. In order to exemplify the long term and wide range impact of Daido Moriyama’s photography, this publication

not only presents an overview and analysis of his work by Sandra Phillips, but it also includes shorter personal notes from people who has encountered and worked with him over the years: Simon Baker, Mark Holborn, Hervé Chandès, Nick Rhodes and Ishiuchi Miyako. Sara Walker and Louise Wolthers are both curators at the Hasselblad Foundation in Gothenburg. Daido Moriyama (b. 1938 in Osaka, Japan) lives and works in Tokyo.

Thonet & Design Published to accompany a major exhibition at The New Collection in Munich, this book reflects on 200 years of furniture design as illustrated by the history of family company Thonet. The ground-breaking achievements of the early period – new technologies, new design methods, new distribution and marketing channels – are juxtaposed with developments in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The firm founded in 1819 by Michael Thonet, a master cabinet-maker from Boppart, evolved down through the decades into one of the most important makers of bentwood furniture. In the late 1920s, Thonet teamed up with several Bauhaus designers who created

chairs in what was then an innovative technology. As these tubular steel furniture items and the early bentwood furniture have long been part of the permanent exhibition at The New Collection, the focus of the current presentation and exhibition catalogue is on the pioneering creations by modern designers from Ed Harlis via Verner Panton through to Norman Foster, Stefan Diez, Konstantin Grcic and – most recently – Sebastian Herkner. Angelika Nollert is the Director of the Neue Sammlung (New Collection), the international design museum housed within the Pinakothek der Moderne art museum, Munich.

Vertigo Op Art and a History of Deception 1520 to 1970

Of all the ground-breaking art movements of the 1950s and 60s, Op Art has received the least amount of attention to date. It has often been discounted as too spectacular and showy and therefore not very profound. This is a misconception – this art sharpens our awareness of the ambiguity of appearances and illustrates the impossibility of grasping ‘reality’.

46

Vertigo. Op Art and a History of Deception 1520 to 1970 presents a deceptive game of the senses, unfurling a whole panorama of artistic works that confound the senses, ranging from panel paintings, reliefs and (kinetic) objects to installations and experiential spaces, to film and computer-generated or computer-controlled art. Eva Badura-Triska is curator at mumok, Vienna.

Unretouched Women Women and the challenge of images

In the mid-1970s in the United States as Feminism gained huge momentum, three American photographers, Eve Arnold, Abigail Heyman and Susan Meiselas, published books of a new kind. Combining testimonies and images, they offer very original documentaries of women at work, their daily routines and their private lives. This catalogue reveals their unusual approach to their works. The images provide an original perspective of female bodies, revealing their invisible make-up artistry and

48

the staging involved behind their public appearances. It reveals the social conventions defining the status of women in society, revealing working women striving for independence and freedom. Clara Bouveresse is a lecturer at Évry-Val d’Essonne University specializing in photography. She has published a history of the Magnum agency.

Monsanto A Photographic Investigation

In the USA, the dozens of Monsanto sites have been classified as sensitive zones by the Federal Environmental Agency due to the sites’ activities, which have already had grave consequences for human health and for the environment. For the sake of mankind and the environment, scientists and institutions have sounded the alert. This photographic investigation sets out to observe Monsanto site practices in order to understand the impact of their activities on people and the environment. The book offers a photographic journey through the past and present of the chemical industry. Using an original graphic approach, it brings together archive documents,

as well as portraits and landscapes of the people and places affected by the environmental consequences of the Monsanto sites’ production. Mathieu Asselin (b. 1973) began his career working on film productions in Caracas, Venezuela, but shaped his photography practice in the United States. His work mainly consists out of long-term investigative documentary projects, of which this book is the most famous example. Les Rencontre d’Arles in France, Photographer’s Gallery in London, Fotomuseum Antwerp in Belgium and the European Parliament in Strasbourg are amongst recent venues where his work has been exhibited.

Vik Muniz Imaginária

As part of Grand Arles Express, the famous Brazilian artist Vik Muniz returns to the papal city eight years after his major solo show to present Imaginária, a series of works that have never been seen in Europe. Exhibited at the Lambert Collection, it comprises fifteen photographs featuring saints as depicted by great artists, from Simon Vouet’s Saint Agnes to Philippe de Champaigne’s Saint Augustine and Jose de Ribera’s Saint Sebastian. In this new series, Muniz continues his exploration of the fascination with saints through the history of their representation in art and, consequently, the relationship between artworks and the idea of the sacred. Composed of installations using everyday objects in incongruous situations (wire, sugar, ketchup, toys and

50

cut-out magazines), Vik Muniz’s photography reproduces images from collective memory and questions the notions of originality and copies. By audaciously re-appropriating icons of art history and the media world, the artist proposes a new relationship to images whose meaning and originality seems to have been exhausted by their reproduction. Vik Muniz, born in 1961 in São Paulo, takes images from art history, the media and reality and manipulates them. Stéphane Ibars is responsible for public relations, press and cultural programmes at the Collection Lambert, Avignon.

Marco Gualazzini

Resilient It is important to provide a reminder of exactly what resilience is, to grasp why it’s the very best title Marco Gualazzini could have given to his first, and significant, published volume. You’ll gain a better understanding still by looking at the photographs – or rather experiencing the photographs Gualazzini offers us. You’ll immediately realise we’re in an immensely difficult environment: difficult to live in, to imagine, to conceive, and for this very reason, a major source of food for thought, pause, self-analysis and – if you choose – improvement. Gualazzini takes us into that side of Africa we prefer to ignore, delete from our minds and our conscience. He shows us eyes we’d prefer not to meet, situations we can’t imagine. Seen from this point of view, this is not a book of

52

photographs, and Gualazzini is not so much a photographer as a witness, a messenger, an ambassador bearing a message of huge importance. Born in Parma in 1976, Marco Gualazzini began his career as a photographer in 2004, with the local newspaper of his city, La Gazzetta di Parma. His most recent works include reportages on microfinance in India, freedom of expression in Myanmar, discrimination against minorities in Pakistan, and in recent years humanitarian crises and conflicts in Africa. His works have been published in numerous magazines, including CNN, M (Le Monde), Der Spiegel, The Sunday Times Magazine, Paris Match, The New York Times, Al-Jazeera, and Time Magazine.

Prisoner Italy holds 190 penitentiaries – among them, 5 female prisons and 52 women’s wards. Valerio Bispuri is the first photographer authorised by the Italian Penitentiary Administration Department of the Ministry of Justice to visit some of the most important detention centers in the country to document the condition of prisoners in 15 jails – both female and male – from 2014 to present. Overcrowding, precarious structures, insufficient numbers of operators, cultural mediators and prison guards are the most relevant problems. At the same time, crucial issues such as study, work, cultural activities and sport are carried out thanks to the will of the prison staff and the fundamental contribution of volunteers. Prisons are the

mirror of a country’s society. In these non-places, people deprived of their liberty try to rebuild habits, affections, and find an alternative for the future. Valerio Bispuri (b. 1971) is a professional journalist and photojournalist and has worked for major Italian and international newspapers and magazines including L’Espresso, Il Venerdì di Repubblica, Internazionale, Le Monde and Stern. He has worked in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Middle East, and exhibited his works in Italy, Spain and Argentina. Bispuri has been awarded numerous international awards including the Latin American POY 2014. Contrasto has published both his important reportages, Encerrados (2015) and Paco (2017).

Take Me Outdoors A Nature Journal for Young Explorers

Take Me Outdoors is the fourth book in an exciting series of guided journals for young explorers. With its smart design, lively illustrations and perfect size to pop in a backpack, it’s a fun, lively way to engage with the wild and natural world. This interactive book is divided into five ‘adventure’ chapters – one for each excursion. Each chapter is divided into themes that encourage children to explore their surroundings, record their thoughts and draw what they see. As they complete lists, create pictures and answer questions they are prompted to think carefully and look at their world with fresh eyes. A final chapter allows them to compare their adventures, and there’s also a useful

glossary so they can learn new words and ideas. Fun, quirky and bursting with facts about birds, bugs and plants; the weather and the environment; expeditions and explorers; and the artists, writers and musicians who have been inspired by nature, this book is a must for children curious about the incredible world they live in. It’s both a great keepsake and a tool for sparking creative writing. Writer and illustrator Mary Richards is author of The Modern Art Journal, Splat: The Most Exciting Artists of All Time and, with David Schweitzer, co-author of ArtSongs for Tate.

Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece; Foreword by Tory Burch; Introduction by Dr. Perri Klass; Illustrations by Lydia Starkey

Manners Begin at Breakfast Modern Etiquette for Families

The founder of a successful children’s clothing line, author of an influential parenting blog, and mother of five children, Marie-Chantal of Greece is constantly asked about proper etiquette for children in our fast paced, technology centred world. Manners Begin at Breakfast addresses rules of etiquette, including basic table manners, social media, fashion do’s and don’ts, party conversation – and more. Covering children from infants to teens, this go-to handbook is an essential guide for all parents concerned about raising self-assured, well-adjusted children who are equipped to thrive in society and develop into confident, happy adults. Illustrated with charming, specially commissioned watercolours and written in a lively, conversational style, it is certain to become a perennial and parental must-have resource.

Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece was born in London, and spent her early years in Hong Kong. At the age of nine, she went off to Le Rosey, a Swiss boarding school, followed by Ecole Active Bilingue in Paris. She found a great passion and aptitude for art and design, which led her to New York City, where she studied at New York Academy of Arts and New York University. She fell in love with Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece and they were married in 1995. They have five children. Marie-Chantal launched her eponymous children’s clothing line in 2000 and the brand has continued to go from strength to strength, counting both royals and celebrities amongst its fans.

Teaching children the basics of the game, this book represents the pieces on a monumental scale. Each character has its own personality which defines the way it moves about the board. The Rainbow Flag Bright, Bold, and Beautiful Today the Rainbow Flag is a familiar sight, at the Pride Parade and around the world. But it is not only a universal symbol; it is also a brilliant object of design that is part of the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. This story, based on true events, follows the birth of the idea and the collaborative creation of the flag and, above all, demonstrates the strength and ingenuity possible when a group of people – friends, community, neighbors, and family – take a stand for civil rights and l-o-v-e.
