A biographical survey of the principal Surrealists by one of the last surviving members of the movement, bestselling author and artist Desmond Morris Desmond Morris is one of the last surviving Surrealists. His first solo exhibition was held in 1948 and in 1950 he shared his first London show with Joan Miró. He has since completed over 2,500 Surrealist paintings, and eight books have been published about his work. He has also written several books, one of which – The Naked Ape – ranks among the top 100 bestsellers of all time, with over 12 million copies sold.

The Lives of the Surrealists Desmond Morris

4

No other art movement in history has contained two artists as different as Magritte and Miró. This is because Surrealism was not in origin an art movement, but a philosophical strategy. It was a way of life – a rebellion against the establishment that had given the world the hideous slaughter of the First World War. Instead of trying to analyse the work of the Surrealists, bestselling author and Surrealist artist Desmond Morris concentrates on them as people – as remarkable individuals. What were their personalities, their predilections, their character strengths and flaws? Did they enjoy a social life or were they loners? Were they bold eccentrics or timid recluses? Drawing on the author’s personal knowledge of the Surrealists, this book captures their life histories, idiosyncrasies and often complex love lives, vividly illustrated with images of the artists and their works. The arts of Surrealism were both spectacular and international, shaped by the darkest, most irrational workings of the unconscious. Shocking, witty and always entertaining, Morris’ tales illuminate the striking variation in approaches to the Surrealist philosophy, both in the artist’s work and in their lives.

Martin Kemp, described by The Times as ‘the world’s leading authority on Leonardo’, relates his fifty-year relationship with the most famous artist of all time

Martin Kemp, one of the world’s leading authorities on Leonardo da Vinci, has published extensively on Leonardo, Renaissance art and links between art and science. Kemp was British Academy Wolfson Research Professor from 1993 to 1998 and based in Scotland for more than 25 years at the Universities of Glasgow and St Andrews. He is now Emeritus Research Professor in the History of Art at Oxford University.

Living with Leonardo Fifty years of sanity and insanity in the art world and beyond Martin Kemp In Living with Leonardo, world-renowned Leonardo da Vinci expert Martin Kemp relates his fifty-year relationship with the work of the most famous artist of all time. Through an engaging personal narrative interwoven with historical research, we learn of Kemp’s encounters with the vast population that surrounds Leonardo: great and lesser academics, collectors and curators, devious dealers and unctuous auctioneers, major scholars and authors, pseudo-historians and fantasists. He shares how he has grappled with swelling legions of ‘Leonardo loonies’, walked on the eggshells of vested interests in academia and museums, and fended off fusillades of non-Leonardos, sometimes more than one a week. Examining the greatest masterpieces, from the Last Supper to Salvator Mundi, through the expert’s eye, we learn first-hand of the thorny questions that surround attribution, the scientific analyses that support the experts’ interpretations, and the continuing importance of connoisseurship. Throughout, from the most scholarly interpretations to the popularity of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code, we are reminded of Leonardo’s unique genius and wonder at how an artist from 500 years ago continues to make such compelling posthumous demands on all those who engage with him.

Curatorial Activism Towards an Ethics of Curating Maura Reilly • Foreword by Lucy R. Lippard Despite decades of postcolonial, feminist, anti-racist and queer activism and theorizing, the art world continues to exclude ‘Other’ artists – those who are women, of colour and LGBTQ. Indeed, the more closely one examines the numbers, the more glaring it becomes that white, Euro-American, heterosexual, privileged and, above all, male artists continue to dominate the art world. The fight for gender and race equality continues apace. Focusing on themes of feminism, race and sexuality, Curatorial Activism examines the pioneering exhibitions that have broken down boundaries and demonstrated that new approaches are possible, from Nochlin’s ‘Women Artists’ at the LACMA in the mid-1970s to Martin’s ‘Carambolages’ in 2016 at the Grand Palais in Paris. By exposing both the disparities and inclusive solutions, Reilly addresses the urgent need in the contemporary art world for curatorial strategies that provide alternatives to exclusionary models of collecting and display. In so doing, she provides an invaluable source of information for current thinkers and, in a world dominated by visual culture, a vital source of inspiration for today’s ever-expanding new generation of curators.

The development of painting in London from the Second World War to the 1970s is a story that has never been told before as a single narrative. R.B. Kitaj’s proposal, made in 1976, that there was a ‘substantial School of London’ was essentially correct, in that there was indeed a critical mass of major artists then at work in the city. It caused confusion, however, because it seemed to imply that there was a movement or stylistic group at work. This was never the case. There were both figurative and abstract painters working in the city – no stylistic label could be stretched to cover Francis Bacon and also Bridget Riley. Gayford’s new book explores this period based on an exceptionally deep well of first-hand interviews, often unpublished, with the artists. His is therefore in part an oral history that gathers the statements of important witnesses and participants. But Gayford also teases out the thread weaving these individual lives together, and demonstrates how, long after it was officially declared dead, painting lived and thrived in London; how, simultaneously aware of the influences of contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock, and also the traditions of Western art from Piero della Francesca to Picasso and Matisse, the post-war painters were bound by their confidence that this ancient medium, in opposition to photography and other media, could do fresh and marvellous things. They asked the question ‘what is painting?’ and explored in their diverse ways, but with equal passion, the possibilities of paint.

This book of about ninety drawings – compiled with the full cooperation of the artist to accompany a major new exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum – explores the wide range of Thiebaud’s production on paper, including early sketches, luminous pastels and watercolours, and charcoal drawings made in connection with his teaching. Bridget Riley The Complete Paintings Edited by Robert Kudielka with Alexandra Tommasini and Natalia Naish Design by Tim Harvey Bridget Riley is one of the most important British painters of our time. Since the early 1960s, when she first gained recognition with her powerful black and white paintings, the artist has continued to explore the principles of abstraction in startling and original ways. Through her systematic engagement with colour, tone, form and structure, Riley pushes the boundaries of perception, challenging us to look at the world anew. This landmark publication brings together for the first time all of Bridget Riley’s known paintings, including well over 500 works ranging from the late 1940s to 2017. Each painting is illustrated with a full-page colour image, many of which have been sourced from the artist’s extensive archive and rarely published. Drawing on archival research and expert knowledge, the publication includes an introductory essay, explanation of materials and methods, extended exhibition history, biographical information and explanatory notes. The publication benefits from the remarkable input of Bridget Riley herself, who has been present at every stage of the project and has provided first-hand information about her work and exhibition and sales history. Bridget Riley: The Complete Paintings is a seminal visual resource and provides the most comprehensive overview of the artist’s paintings to date.

A landmark five-volume publication that brings together for the first time all of Bridget Riley’s known paintings Robert Kudielka is former professor of aesthetics and philosophy of art at the University of the Arts, Berlin. He has been documenting Bridget Riley’s career progress and artistic development for over forty years. Bridget Riley’s archivists Alexandra Tommasini (PhD) and Natalia Naish (MA) have been working closely with the artist since 2012. Tim Harvey has designed most of the important publications on Bridget Riley’s work over the past decade.

Despite his posthumous fame as a painter of flowers, still-lifes, gardens, landscapes and city scenes, during his lifetime Vincent van Gogh believed that his portraits constituted his most important works. Although as an artist he was ‘touched by so many different things’, he was nevertheless committed to the art of portraiture – a quality that distinguished him from his contemporaries. Van Gogh was passionate in his avoidance of bland, photographic resemblances, in the hope of capturing the essential character of his models by means of expressive colour and brushwork. Showcasing a dramatic set of portraits created during Van Gogh’s ten-year career, this book reflects the strong visual impact with which the artist captured the diversity of contemporary life. In his many portraits, we can discern the artist’s desire to record expressively a number of themes, from the plight of the agricultural workers in his native Brabant and the destitution of prostitutes and their children in urban Europe, to the lives of his cosmopolitan acquaintances in Paris, including café owners and art dealers. It was here that he began his remarkable sequence of self-portraits. With reference to Van Gogh’s extensive correspondence, Skea elaborates how the artist perceived his chosen subjects as would a writer, and how he felt that his portraits should somehow evoke what he considered to be the spiritual underpinning of human existence.

Art in Hungary, 1956–1980 Doublespeak and Beyond Edited by Edit Sasvári, Hedvig Turai and Sándor Hornyik The international significance of the art produced in Hungary in the 1960s and 1970s has come to the fore in recent years. Nevertheless, studies of modern and contemporary art in Eastern Europe during the Soviet era tend to focus on their relationship to Western art, with an emphasis on the parallel development of similar artistic practices – an approach that risks overlooking the specific circumstances of the art’s making. In Hungary’s case, artists of the neo-avantgarde found themselves in an increasingly isolated position, caught between the ruling communist authorities, who condemned their art as a product of capitalist cultural imperialism, and a predominantly conservative public, which rejected it as a foreign creation alien to the spirit of national culture. Art in Hungary, 1956–1980 provides a unique insight into the ways in which Hungarian neo-avant-garde artists both responded to and fought against a system that was determined to deny them a sense of autonomy. At the heart of the book is a commitment to understanding Hungarian contemporary art of the 1960s and 1970s – a time of oppressive communist rule in the aftermath of the failed revolution of 1956 – in the context of the conditions in which it was created. Featuring more than 250 illustrations, a bold design and essays on a diverse range of subjects, this book, the outcome of a major international research project, represents the authoritative account and analysis of a remarkable period in the history of Hungarian art.

In her final book, the culmination of a lifetime at the cutting edge of thinking about the visual arts, Linda Nochlin charts the highly charged phenomenon of misery as it was depicted in the popular and fine arts of the 19th century

Linda Nochlin (1931–2017) was Lila Acheson Wallace Professor Emerita of Modern Art at the New York University Institute of Fine Arts. She wrote extensively on issues of gender in art history and on 19th-century Realism. Her numerous publications include Women, Art and Power, Representing Women and Courbet, as well as the pioneering essay from 1971: ‘Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?’

‘Nochlin’s influence on critical writing and teaching is legendary, and this engrossing analysis of the visual representation of misery in the nineteenth century is a must-read for anyone hoping to address our troubling times’ Cindy Sherman

Misère The Visual Representation of Misery in the 19th Century Linda Nochlin The arrival of the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century witnessed unprecedented changes in society: rapid economic progress went hand-in-hand with appalling working conditions, displacement, squalor and destitution for those at the bottom of the social scale. These new circumstances presented a challenge to contemporary image-makers, who wished to capture the effects of hunger, poverty and alienation in Britain, Ireland and France in the era before documentary photography. In this groundbreaking book, the eminent art historian Linda Nochlin examines the styles and expressive strategies that were used by artists and illustrators to capture this misère, roughly characterized as poverty that afflicts both body and soul. She investigates images of the Irish Famine in the period 1846–51; the gendered representation of misery, particularly of poor women and prostitutes; and the work of three very different artists: Théodore Géricault, Gustave Courbet and the less well-known Fernand Pelez. The artists’ desire to depict the poor and the outcast accurately and convincingly is still a pertinent issue, though now, as Nochlin observes, the question has a moral and ethical dimension – does the documentary style belittle its subjects and degrade their condition?

The Wyvern Collection Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture and Metalwork Paul Williamson 18

This is the first in a series of definitive catalogues of one of the world’s most important, yet rarely seen, private collections of medieval art. Composed of outstanding European sculptures of the Medieval period, as well as some Late Antique and Byzantine pieces and related works of the post-Medieval era, the collection comprises more than 200 objects, almost all from the period 300–1550, made from wood, stone (including alabaster and marble) and terracotta. There are also medieval works of art in metal, mostly consisting of crucifix figures (corpora), and other functional metalware such as aquamanilia (water vessels for the washing of hands) and candlesticks. The earliest object is a Celto-Roman stone head, probably made as a cult object; there are also important Romanesque and Gothic pieces from northern France, Germany, England, Spain and Italy. Other religious objects such as reliquaries and statues display exquisite craftsmanship and hint at the taste of some of the most discerning, wealthy and pious patrons of their times. Each entry includes a full discussion of related pieces and provenance. The book concludes with a useful detailed bibliography. Many of these pieces would be cherished in any of the world’s great museum collections of medieval art, and even the less celebrated pieces open up wider areas of study. This book will enthral all who are intrigued by the material culture of the Middle Ages, and those interested in sculpture and metalwork more broadly.

The Spirit of the Bauhaus Foreword by Nicholas Fox Weber

20

‘Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts!’ declared the architect Walter Gropius in his Bauhaus manifesto. Founded as an art school in 1919 and forced to close in 1933 by the Nazis, the Bauhaus established itself as a major influence on 20th-century art and design that continues to this day. Students were taught by some of the most celebrated artists of the time, including Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and Wassily Kandinsky. The school moved from Weimar to Dessau in 1922, under its radical new director Hannes Meyer, and to Berlin in 1932 under architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1933 the Gestapo forced the Bauhaus to close for the last time. This volume uncovers the sources of inspiration that brought the Bauhaus into existence, from medieval cathedrals of Europe and Hokusai prints to William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. Each of the various workshops and courses at the Bauhaus is explored in detail, illustrating the extraordinary wealth of experimentation in every field: ceramics, woodwork, metalwork, textiles, glass-painting, sculpture, mural, printing and binding, typography and publicity, theatre, architecture and photography. This accessible guide to the Bauhaus, its history and turbulent political context, provides the key to understanding why it is recognized as the most durable and influential source of modern ideas about art, design and craft.

Rodin and the art of ancient Greece Celeste Farge, Bénédicte Garnier and Ian Jenkins Rodin, famous for The Thinker and The Kiss, was captivated by the sculptures of Classical antiquity, and he constantly reworked and assimilated the forms of ancient Greek and Roman art in his own work. Rodin visited the British Museum for the first time in the summer of 1881 and there greatly admired the sculptures of the Parthenon. Before he saw the originals, he was already acquainted with plaster casts of them displayed in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. The Parthenon sculptures continued to be a major influence on his own work and he visited them frequently on his return visits to London. He also amassed a huge collection of fragments of ancient sculpture that served as a great source of inspiration. An introduction to this volume by Hartwig Fischer, Director of the British Museum, reflects on the internationalism of the Parthenon sculptures and their global reach, and essays by the curators of the exhibition tell the story of their reception in the modern era, and chart the lifelong relationship between these sculptures and Rodin. The works featured are arranged thematically, with sections on Rodin’s Parthenon, Truth to Nature, the Monument, the Fragment and Motion and Emotion. The book includes examples of Rodin’s drawings as well as his sculpture.

‘MacMillan has that essential quality of the historian, a narrative gift’ Daily Telegraph ‘A clear-eyed, affectionate account’ Mail on Sunday ‘Well researched and thoroughly enjoyable’ Evening Standard

The apparent glamour of the Indian Raj continues to fascinate long after the British quit the subcontinent. But along with the beauty of the Indian landscape and the privilege of servants and holidays in hill stations, British women in that vanished world faced challenges and fears that came from being an alien ruling minority. These women were at the heart of the imperial enterprise. It was their role to support the men’s work, raise the children and attempt to replicate British society thousands of miles from home. They struggled in the face of heat, illness, loneliness and boredom as well as different customs, languages and religions. The distinguished historian and bestselling author Margaret MacMillan, drawing on letters and memoirs, novels and interviews, brings vividly to life their experiences – humdrum, extraordinary, light-hearted, tragic – through the century of the Raj, from the 1850s to Indian independence in 1947.

‘A dramatic demolition of the “stones and bones” approach to archaeology’ New Scientist

‘An important, provocative essay on human evolution, argued with great eloquence and skill’ Current Archaeology ‘A triumph of collaboration, as well as a gripping detective story’ New Statesman

When and how did the brains of our hominin ancestors become human minds? When and why did our capacity for language or art, music and dance evolve? And why does this matter today? It is the contention of this pathbreaking and provocative book that it was the need for early humans to live in ever-larger social groups, and to maintain social relations over ever-greater distances – the ability to ‘think big’ – that drove the enlargement of the human brain and the development of the human mind. This ‘social brain hypothesis’, put forward by evolutionary psychologists such as Robin Dunbar, one of the authors of this book, can be tested against archaeological and fossil evidence, as archaeologists Clive Gamble and John Gowlett show in the second part of Thinking Big. Along the way, the three authors touch on subjects as diverse and diverting as the switch from finger-tip grooming to vocal grooming or the crucial importance of making fire for the lengthening of the social day. As this remarkable book shows, it seems we still inhabit social worlds that originated deep in our evolutionary past – by the fireside, on the hunt and across the grasslands of Africa.

Miranda Aldhouse-Green is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Archaeology at Cardiff University. She is the award-winning author of many books, including Exploring the World of the Druids, The Quest for the Shaman, The Celtic Myths and Bog Bodies Uncovered, all published by Thames & Hudson.

Two thousand years ago, the Romans sought to absorb into their empire what they regarded as a remote, almost mythical island on the very edge of the known world – Britain. The expeditions of Julius Caesar and the invasion of AD 43 brought fundamental and lasting changes to the island. Not least among these was a pantheon of new Classical deities and religious systems, along with a clutch of exotic eastern cults including Christianity. But what of Britannia and her own home-grown deities? What cults and cosmologies did the Romans encounter and how did they in turn react to them? Under Roman rule, the old gods were challenged, adopted, adapted, absorbed and re-configured. In this fresh and innovative new account, Miranda Aldhouse-Green balances literary, archaeological and iconographic evidence (and scrutinizes their shortcomings and how we interpret them) to illuminate the complexity of religion and belief in Roman Britain, and the two-way traffic of cultural exchange and interplay between imported and indigenous cults. Despite the remoteness of this period, on the threshold between prehistory and history, many of the forces, tensions, ideologies and issues of identity at work are still relevant today, as Sacred Britannia skilfully draws out.

In the Footsteps of King David Revelations from an Ancient Biblical City Yosef Garfinkel, with Saar Ganor and Michael G. Hasel King David is a pivotal figure in the Bible, which provides stirring accounts of his deeds, including the slaying of the Philistine giant Goliath and the founding of his capital in Jerusalem. However, no certain archaeological finds from the period of his reign or of the united kingdom he ruled over have been uncovered – until now. In this first-hand and highly readable account, the excavators of Khirbet Qeiyafa in the Valley of Elah, where the Bible says David fought Goliath, reveal how seven years of exhaustive investigation have uncovered a city dating to the time of David – the late 11th and early 10th century BC – surrounded by massive fortifications with impressive gates, a clear urban plan and an abundance of finds that tell us much about the inhabitants, including a pottery sherd with the earliest known Hebrew inscription. The authors clearly describe the methods of the excavation and the evidence they discovered, as well as how we interpret it. But more than just a simple excavation report, this book also explains the significance of these discoveries and how they shed new light on David’s kingdom, as well as discussing the link between the Bible, archaeology and history. This topic is at the centre of a decades-long controversy, with some scholars disputing that the Bible contains a record of historical events and people, an approach that is convincingly challenged here.

This spectacular collection of nearly 200 jewelled weapons and priceless accoutrements from the Indian subcontinent was assembled over many decades by Sheikh Nasser and Sheikha Hussah al-Sabah for The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait. Produced for noble patrons who valued the arts, these richly decorated edged weapons and other princely objects are masterpieces of a long and unparalleled tradition of artistic craftsmanship on the subcontinent, displaying distinctive techniques of gemstone setting, hardstone carving, enamelling and blade damascening. Despite their artistry, most of the jewelled weapons were functional, with blades that show signs of repolishing or replacement following damage in combat. Others, such as the courtly maces and staffs, were primarily armorial symbols displaying the splendour and wealth of Indian monarchs, princes and courtiers to the world. The more than 500 illustrations in this volume, the ninth in Thames & Hudson’s celebrated series on The al-Sabah Collection, include marvellous jewelled and enamelled weapons, archery rings and carved hilts, as well as a jewelled shield, fittings and horse trappings. The detailed catalogue descriptions explore the techniques and stylistic affinities of each object, prefaced by an illustrated historical overview that presents each weapon type in context.

Chess and Other Games Pieces from Islamic Lands Deborah Freeman Fahid Among the many treasures of The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, are hundreds of chess and other games pieces dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries CE. Intricately crafted in a rich variety of materials, including ivory, wood, ceramic, glass, jade and agate, these tiny objects are of enormous historical significance. They not only mark the evolution of familiar games into their modern forms, but also evoke the imperial palaces, military camps and herders’ tents in which they were played over many centuries, from the Sasanian period through the Islamic era in Central Asia, Iran, present-day Iraq and northern India. Some of the most beautiful are a famous group of rock-crystal chess pieces that were kept in a monastery church in Spain for more than 800 years; other spectacular examples with equally intriguing histories have never before been published. This volume, the tenth in Thames & Hudson’s publications on The al-Sabah Collection, provides the definitive catalogue of this outstanding group of games pieces, with more than 300 striking new images. Specially commissioned scientific testing has allowed many of these objects to be dated with precision for the first time. An additional section listing medieval chessmen from museums and private collections worldwide, some previously unpublished, adds a unique contextual dimension.

This revised edition also addresses the need for responsible, sustainable design, and how this can be achieved. Louis Vuitton: The Complete Fashion Collections Catwalk Introduction by Jo Ellison • Collection texts by Louise Rytter Founded as a luxury leather goods house in 1854, Louis Vuitton was for many decades one of the world’s leading trunk and accessories makers. It was after launching its first fashion collections in 1998, however, that the house reached unprecedented global fame, and pioneered high-profile collaborations with artists such as Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse. This definitive publication opens with a concise history of the house, followed by brief biographical profiles of Marc Jacobs, the first creative director (1998–2014), and Nicolas Ghesquière, who helms the brand today, before exploring the collections themselves, organized chronologically. Each collection is introduced by a short text unveiling its influences and highlights, and illustrated with carefully curated catwalk images. Showcasing hundreds of spectacular clothes, details, accessories, beauty looks and set designs – and, of course, the top fashion models who wore them on the runway, from Naomi Campbell and Gisele to Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne. A rich reference section, including an extensive index, concludes the book.

340 illustrations 25.0 x 19.5 cm 304pp paperback ISBN 978 0 500 292440 February £24.95

This is the story of streetwear. Authors King ADZ and Wilma Stone recount how a long line of subcultural movements have taken over both the high street and high-end fashion, and explore just how a revolutionary sartorial trend has evolved to encompass a vast range of disparate tribes, offering a powerful sense of belonging and identity to all. The story begins in 1972, in Jersey City, USA, with the birth of the first ever streetwear shop, Trash and Vaudeville. The journey then encompasses punk, Ivy League preppies, the hip-hop kings and queens of Harlem, the dresser/casual movement born out of British football culture, the skater scene of California, the Paninari scooter-brats of Milan, and much more. Whether focusing on major brands such as Stüssy, Carhartt, Tommy Hilfiger and SHUT or today’s up-and-comers from South African townships or downtown Seoul, this dynamic study surveys the scene. It also takes a look at how the internet era has changed the ways streetwear is sold and consumed, and how the field may evolve in the future. Packed with profiles of industry pioneers, Q&As with key figures and over 300 illustrations, this is the complete history of the fastest-growing and most influential movement in contemporary clothing.

Publication coincides with a retrospective exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery, London, in June 2018, followed by an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Le Locle, Switzerland.

Alex Prager is one of the truly original image makers of our time. Working fluidly between photography and film she creates elaborate scenes that reference a wide range of influences, including Hollywood and experimental cinema, popular culture and street photography. These delicately staged compositions produce a distinct aesthetic of still and moving images that are familiar yet strange, utterly compelling and unerringly memorable. This book is the first career retrospective of this rising star, one who has won both popular acclaim and the recognition of the art establishment. It summarizes Prager’s creative trajectory and offers an ideal introduction for the popular ‘breakout’ audience who may have only recently encountered her work. Structured around her project-oriented approach, Silver Lake Drive presents more than 120 images from her career to date: from the early Polyester and Big Valley series, through her first films and collaborations with the actor Bryce Dallas Howard, to the tour-de-force of Face in the Crowd – shot on a Hollywood sound stage with over 150 performers – and her 2016 commission for the Paris Opera, La Grande Sortie. Supported by a major exhibition, and including an introduction by Michael Govan, Director of LACMA, essays by Clare Grafik of The Photographers’ Gallery and Michael Mansfield of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, and an in-depth interview with Alex Prager by Nathalie Herschdorfer of the Museum of Fine Arts, Le Locle, Silver Lake Drive will be an essential publication for those who follow Prager’s career and all with an interest in and appreciation of contemporary art.

Azuma and Shiinoki have collaborated on three volumes of Encyclopedia of Flowers. Over 250 illustrations 29.5 x 22.0 cm 256pp ISBN 978 0 500 545003 March £35.00

Flora Magnifica The Art of Flowers in Four Seasons Makoto Azuma and Shunsuke Shiinoki 50

This sumptuous book is the product of a longstanding collaboration between renowned flower artist Makoto Azuma and botanical photographer Shunsuke Shiinoki. Working together, they have selected hundreds of plant species and arranged them in striking combinations that could never occur in the natural world, so creating a unique floral aesthetic. The result is a series of dense, luxuriant images, rich in colour and texture, in which nature and artifice are skilfully mingled. The four chapters are themed according to the cycle of the seasons: the freshness and new life of spring, the exuberance and abundance of summer, the fading grandeur of autumn and the deepening shadows of winter. An illustrated key at the back of the book allows readers to identify the plant varieties featured. Recalling the opulent still-life paintings of the 17th century, the photographs not only capture the surface beauty of the flowers, but suggest the burgeoning life brimming within them as well as its transience. From the sensuality of opening petals to the unfurling elegance of fern fronds, these gorgeous displays are vividly preserved in a meditative and inspirational book that will enchant all lovers of nature and art.

Double Take Reconstructing the History of Photography Jojakim Cortis and Adrian Sonderegger Double Take presents thirty-nine uncannily accurate reconstructions of the great images and moments from history – ranging from the earliest known photograph, through the landmark events of the 20th and 21st century, the icons of popular culture and the art world, to the world’s most expensive photograph. These intricately crafted works have been created in miniature by Jojakim Cortis and Adrian Sonderegger. Inspired by the record auction price of $4.3m set by Andreas Gursky’s Rhein II in 2011, they set themselves a challenge: could they use model making and lighting skills to reconstruct the Gursky image in their Zürich studio? They could! This one-off challenge became the starting point for a larger personal project by the duo. The whole world, and the surface of the moon, were conjured in their studio. Double Take includes their reconstructions of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Behind the Gare Saint Lazare, Sam Shaw’s Marilyn Monroe, The Seven Year Itch, Pennie Smith’s London Calling and more. With a full selection of images showing the making of the reconstructions in the studio, an essay by Christian Caujolle, an introduction by Florian Ebner (of the Pompidou Centre) and an in-depth interview with the photographers, Double Take is the perfect volume for all with a love of photography with a twist and a sense of humour.

The world’s most iconic photographs meticulously re-created in miniature Jojakim Cortis studied photography at Zürich University of the Arts (ZHDK), and has been working as a freelance photographer since 2006, as well as a technical assistant and lecturer at ZHDK since 2009. Adrian Sonderegger also studied photography at ZHDK. He has been working as a freelance photographer for over ten years.

Thomas Sweertvaegher is a Belgian photographer and devoted skater. He co-wrote The Butcher’s Book, which was published in 2016.

145 illustrations 26.0 x 18.5 cm 192pp ISBN 978 0 500 021736 March £24.95

The Journal of a Skateboarder Thomas Sweertvaegher Thomas Sweertvaegher’s photographs celebrate the unbreakable family of skaters and the thrills, spills and freedom of skating life. At the age of twenty-nine, Sweertvaegher has spent most of his life on the road with friends, indulging his dual passions of photography and skating. Years of travelling the world – always on the move and often carrying nothing more than a camera and a skateboard – have yielded the photographs collected in this volume, where the skateboard remains a constant symbol of freedom, an extension of one’s identity and an enduring bond between friends. Rolling on the margins of society, exploring the limits of life and his own young adulthood, Sweertvaegher captures whatever is happening around him during his travels. His shots take the reader on a journey, showing the highs and lows, bruises and stitches of skating and street life, and ultimately celebrating the beauty such a life can bring. While it captures Sweertvaegher’s odyssey from a highly personal perspective, The Journal of a Skateboarder is also a visual documentary of the skating world, and features key figures such as Axel Cruysberghs, Arto Saari, Dylan Rieder and Rodney Mullen.

Anthology of Decorated Papers A Sourcebook for Designers PJM Marks This remarkable and beautiful book brings together a collection of decorated papers dating from the 16th to the 20th century. They were produced for a wide variety of uses: as wrappers and endpapers for books, as the backing for playing cards, and even as linings for chests and cases. Some decorated papers were used as humble pictures for display in churches and the home; some were sold as souvenirs to pilgrims; and others were used merely as wrappings for foodstuffs such as gingerbread and chocolate. What unites all the papers in the book is the richness of their ornamentation and the thin, flexible characteristics of the original sheets. They are all further united by having been collected by Olga Hirsch (1889–1968), a trained bookbinder who left her collection of some 3,500 papers to the British Library, where they remain one of the largest and most diverse collections of decorated papers in the world. This anthology brings together some of the most exquisite examples. It will delight and inspire designers, bibliophiles and anyone with a love of pattern and decoration.

‘A source of inspiration for type designers’ Creative Review

‘Brilliantly innovative ... cool and classy’ Metro

Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets. Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from thirty countries with a view to showing the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world renowned, such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa) and Hera (Germany); others are lesser known or only now starting to emerge. Each artist received the same brief: to design all twenty-six letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them. The results are a fascinating insight into the creative process.

3D Thinking in Design and Architecture From Antiquity to the Future Roger Burrows The geometric foundations, forms and patterns in today’s architecture, design and decorative arts have been deeply influenced by past cultures. From humankind’s first path-like doodles on cave walls through to the higher abstractions developed to make accurate measurements and predictions, the three-dimensional forms we design and build are dependent upon available materials, human needs and the limitations of our imaginations. This unique sourcebook presents a history of the intimate relationship between geometry, mathematics and manmade design throughout human history, from the Neolithic period through the Indian, Egyptian, Babylonian, Chinese, Greek, Celtic, Islamic and Renaissance cultures, to the present and the possible future. Presenting key principles that can be applied across all design disciplines, Roger Burrows reveals fresh insights and ideas about how geometry as a visual language has evolved to meet our needs, initiated new technologies and changed the way we think about the world around us. With a wealth of original artworks by the author to explain his ideas, this book will be an essential reference resource for inspiration and information for students and design professionals.

Growing numbers of us work not only from home, but from anywhere; job flexibility has become a key requirement for employers and workers alike. This, in turn, has created new challenges for architects and designers, many of whom themselves start out working from home. They are tackling demand head on with innovative solutions that allow clients to transform their spaces to suit a wide range of needs, from multifunctional studios to homes that seamlessly combine work and family life. Divided into five thematic sections, HomeWork explores the exciting variety of ways that the workplace can be integrated into the domestic environment. From standalone multifunctional furniture to mobile room dividers and dynamic solutions that fold out or pop up to create new work areas, each design addresses the unique needs of the space, client and working practices for which it was required, and tackles new questions about the rapidly evolving relationship between work and domestic life in the 21st century. Anyone seeking fresh ideas on how to strike the perfect balance between living and working at home will find this an essential and timely resource.

A celebration of the life and work of Australian designer Grant Featherston, creator hundreds of mid-century designs Geoff Isaac is a collector and design historian. He is Australia’s foremost expert on the work of Grant and Mary Featherston and the manufacturer that realised many of their designs, Aristoc.

Over 250 illustrations 29.0 x 24.0 cm 288pp ISBN 978 0 500 501108 January £39.95

Featherston Geoff Isaac • Original photography by Nic Bailey This is the first book to celebrate the life and work of Grant Featherston (1922–1995), the Melbourne-based industrial designer best-known for his Contour chairs. This collection was designed and developed in the early 1950s and remains highly sought after by mid-century modern collectors in Australia and overseas – often fetching $10,000 or more at auction. Featherston, later joined by his second wife, Mary, created hundreds of chairs over the next thirty years; and yet, this astonishing Australian industrial design partnership has gone largely uncelebrated until now. This comprehensive publication focuses on the chairs produced between 1947 and 1975 and presents a new biography of the designer, drawn from archival research and interviews with his peers. Extensively illustrated with over 250 photographs, it includes a selection of previously unpublished material.

Jim Olson Building • Nature • Art Jim Olson • Introduction by Aaron Betsky Over the course of a career spanning more than fifty years, Seattle-based architect Jim Olson, of Olson Kundig, has made his name designing a broad range of buildings that sensitively respond to their environment. Initially drawing from his close connection to the nature and culture of the Pacific Northwest, he has attracted an international reputation for designing houses for art collectors around the world. His buildings reveal an exceptional interplay between art, light, nature, craft and architecture, which can be experienced in a range of projects that span the globe, from Mexico to South-East Asia. This complete overview of many decades of carefully considered buildings begins with an extended essay by Aaron Betsky, who considers the intimate relationship between Olson’s natural surroundings and love of art and his design process over the course of his career. This is followed by a selection of twenty-eight of Olson’s recent projects, interspersed with private sketches and his reflections on architecture and the creative process. The final reference section includes an extensive illustrated chronology of the architect’s entire corpus.

The Architecture Concept Book James Tait

76

Inspired by the complexity and heterogeneity of the world around us, by the rise of new technologies and their associated behaviours, The Architecture Concept Book seeks to stimulate young architects and students to think outside of what is often a rather conservative and self-perpetuating professional domain, and to be influenced by everything around them. Organized into four central themes, the book explores thirty-two architectural concepts, or strategies, which cover wide-ranging and not always architecturally centred subjects. These progress from such notions as disorder, function and memory, to social phenomena such as influence and respect, to basic architectural components such as the wall, roof, stair and services, before concluding with texts on reviewing, optimizing and economizing. The aim is to create more thoughtful architects for the Digital Age. Each theme is accompanied by photographs, plans and illustrations specially drawn by the author to explain spatial ideas, from the small-scale to the urban. In a compact format, the words and pictures come together to create a reference source to which students and young professionals will return again and again.

An expertly written and exquisitely photographed study of Victor Horta, the father of Art Nouveau architecture 78

David Dernie is an architect and educator. He studied at the University of Cambridge and then became a Rome Scholar at the British School of Rome and was elected a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Alastair Carew-Cox is a photographer specializing in architecture and interiors. His work has been extensively published.

Victor Horta The Architect of Art Nouveau David Dernie and Alastair Carew-Cox Victor Horta (1861–1947) is well known as the creator of Art Nouveau architecture. Following the design of the Hôtel Tassel, Brussels, in 1893, Horta produced more than forty buildings during the following decade. This new book discusses the many influences on his designs, and his legacy. Detailed descriptions of nineteen projects, including Edicule Lambeaux, Hôtel Autrique, Hôtel Max Hallet and the Brugmann Hospital, are illustrated with Horta’s original drawings and specially commissioned photographs by awardwinning architectural photographer Alastair Carew-Cox. It includes extensive photographs of Hôtel Solvay, one of Horta’s most important works. Access to photographers had been denied for many years, but was granted to the authors in 2016 in recognition of their significant contribution to the study of Horta. Victor Horta: The Architect of Art Nouveau has been prepared in collaboration with the Horta Museum, Brussels, ensuring that it is both accurate and up to date. It will appeal to anyone interested in Art Nouveau, one of the great aesthetic movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and one that laid the foundations for the development of modernism in architecture and interior design.
