A contemporary new cover design based on classical principles The World of Art’s new cover design features fluid shapes based on a grid inspired by the Golden Ratio, the system of mathematical proportion believed for millennia to be the secret of aesthetic harmony in nature, art and design.

A fresh, modern page layout Every element of the page grid has been reworked to create dynamic layouts that enable the reader to focus on the text and the imagery at the same time. The images, reproduced in colour throughout, and as large as possible, allow the reader to study key works in detail. This versatile new design works for the varied subject matters throughout the series.

This third edition not only has updates throughout, but also includes two new chapters, on the ‘House for Essex’, designed and built in 2015 with Living Architecture (the company founded by philosopher and writer Alain de Botton that aims to promote and enhance appreciation of modern architecture), and on ‘Identity Politics’, covering new work made since the previous edition of this book was published in 2013.

The first book to concentrate on the early work of ‘Transvestite Potter’, bestselling author, broadcaster and social commentator Grayson Perry

Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years Edited by Catrin Jones and Chris Stephens Essays by Grayson Perry, Andrew Wilson and Catrin Jones Grayson Perry is one of a tiny group of artists whose names and reputations extend beyond the narrow fraction of gallery-goers into a wider public realm. He is now a household name as a result of his widely viewed television documentaries, numerous publications – including his critically acclaimed book about masculinity, The Descent of Man – and dazzling appearances dressed as his alter ego, Claire. More than simply a famous artist, Perry has become for many a national treasure. Perry first came to public attention in 2003 when he won the Turner Prize, the first ceramicist to do so, and rapidly established a unique brand as ‘the Transvestite Potter’. Ceramics are still central to Perry’s work as an artist, and this book examines the plates, pots and statues from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s that laid the foundations of his career. It traces his artistic development, examining the iconography and meaning behind these pieces and other early work, including films, placing his art in the context not only of his own psychological make-up in the period before he underwent therapy, but also of the various subcultures of the London art scene in the 1980s.

Catrin Jones is Curator, Holburne Museum, Bath, and Chris Stephens is Director of the same institution. Andrew Wilson is Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain.

An essential illustrated guide to the history of contemporary art from 1980 to the present Tony Godfrey, former Programme Director of the MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute, London, now lives in Manila, where he works as a curator with artists from South-East Asia. He has written for the Burlington Magazine and Art in America, and is the author of Conceptual Art and Painting Today, as well as numerous exhibition catalogues.

201 illustrations 26.0 x 20.0cm 280pp ISBN 978 0 500 239872 April £29.95

The Story of Contemporary Art Tony Godfrey Is it really art? What does it mean? Why does it cost so much? While these questions are perpetually asked about contemporary art, they are not the questions that E. H. Gombrich set out to answer in his seminal book The Story of Art. Contemporary art is very different from what came before. From the 1960s, where Gombrich’s account concludes, artists began to abandon traditional forms of art and started to make work that questioned art’s very definition. This is where Tony Godfrey picks up the story. Developments in contemporary art have followed no straightforward line of progress or sequence of movements. Recognizing this, Godfrey creates a narrative from a series of often dramatic creative conflicts and arguments around what art is or should be. From object versus sculpture and painting versus conceptual to local versus global, gallery versus wider world, The Story of Contemporary Art traces a history in terms of drastic changes in social and political life over the last sixty years. Key to the book is the story of how a perception that art was made almost exclusively by white men from North America and Western Europe has been radically overturned. Compelling and intelligent, but never academic, this book tells us how.

Contemporary Ceramic Art Charlotte Vannier and Véronique Pettit Laforet Contemporary ceramicists are using cutting-edge technology, conceptual thinking and new platforms to push the boundaries of clay and broaden its appeal. A generation is emerging whose work is irreverent, playful and radical – but also beautiful – while established avant-garde ceramicists are gaining broader recognition. This book, a companion volume to Unravelled and Threads, explores the work of ninety artists at the vanguard of this movement. Their works range from monumental installations and imaginary bestiaries to abstract shapes or human-sized characters: Barnaby Barford taps into the heritage of porcelain with playful remakings of the kinds of figurines popular during the 18th and 19th centuries; Manoli Gonzalez’s delicate, translucent pieces are inspired by the vegetable world; Caroline Cheng’s Prosperity dress, adorned with more than 25,000 tiny porcelain butterflies, is the centrepiece of the British Museum’s 20th- and 21st-century collection of Chinese works. Spanning the world and the generations, the artists gathered in this book offer an exciting showcase of a booming practice.

A wave of protest is in the air and on the walls! A new generation of politicized artists, designers and communicators the world over is using stencil art as an accessible yet powerful means of giving voice to their ideas. The Stencil Graffiti Handbook sees Tristan Manco back on the streets. Through an incomparable network of street-art contacts, gained through over two decades of immersion in the scene, Manco has scoured the globe to find the most interesting street artists working today – those operating outside of the mainstream market of ‘Urban Art’ and beneath the radar of everyone but the true cognoscenti. Exploring the medium’s applications within grassroots activism as well as the contemporary craft scene, Manco brings this thriving artform to light, showing both process and results: • Dives into street art’s essential elements – place, space, technique and subject – before taking to the streets to see how, where and why stencil graffiti is king. • Features studio visits with artists and practical, step-by-step guidance via artist-led projects. • Includes specially commissioned instructional illustrations by the renowned Colombian collective Stinkfish. The Stencil Graffiti Handbook offers fledgling artists, designers, typographers and guerrilla marketeers an unmissable education and the wherewithal and inspiration to get their messages out there.

Derek Jarman: Protest! Edited by Seán Kissane and Karim Rehmani-White Designed by Niall Sweeney Derek Jarman was a very English rebel, a maverick and radical artist whose unique and distinctive voice was honed protesting against the strictures of life in post-war Britain. In an innovative practice that roamed freely across all varieties of media, Jarman refused to live and die quietly. He defined bohemian London life in the 1960s, exploded into queer punk in the 70s and with unbounded creative rage, ingenuity and sheer personal charm, he triumphed over an atmosphere of fear and ignorance in the age of AIDS to produce timeless, eloquent works of art which resonate still more strongly today. This major new publication offers a definitive overview of Derek Jarman’s life and work. It covers all aspects of his oeuvre, from his features to his Super-8 films, his painting, design for theatre, poetry, gardening, memoir and political activism. Protest! also contains excerpts from Jarman’s own writings, short interviews with friends and collaborators and newly commissioned texts from a wide range of contributors including John Maybury, Philip Hoare, Sir Norman Rosenthal and Olivia Laing. Generously illustrated with previously unseen images drawn from Jarman’s personal archive and works from all stages of his career, this book brings the reader fresh and surprising insights into the world of this much-loved artist.

‘I won’t read a more interesting book all year ... utterly fascinating’ A.N. Wilson, Sunday Times

‘A magic flight of a book … It’s a measure of Hockney’s vividness of perception that he can always put a cap on Gayford’s knowledge … Fabulous!’ Clive James, Guardian ‘Hockney asks big questions about the nature of picture-making and the relationship between painters and photography in a way that no other contemporary artist seems to do … Enormously good-humoured and entertaining … On almost every page, there is an interesting provocation’ Andrew Marr, New Statesman

‘An eloquent conversational testimony to the vividness of life lived through intelligent looking. You will see Caravaggio and ‘Citizen Kane’ with fresh eyes’ Daily Telegraph

A picture, says David Hockney, is the only way that we can give an account of what we see. But all picture-makers face a common problem: how to compress three-dimensional people, things and places onto a flat surface? The results are often pigeonholed as paintings, photographs or films. In fact, Hockney argues, whether they are made by brush, camera or digital program, and no matter if they are on cave walls or computer screens, first and foremost they are all pictures. And for us to understand how we see the world around us – and hence ourselves – what is needed is a history of pictures. This is that book. Informed and energized by a lifetime of painting, drawing and making images with cameras, Hockney, in collaboration with the art critic Martin Gayford, explores how and why pictures have been made across the millennia. What makes marks on a flat surface interesting? How do you show movement in a still picture, and how, conversely, do films and television connect with old masters? Juxtaposing a rich variety of images – a still from a Disney cartoon with a Japanese woodblock print by Hiroshige, a scene from an Eisenstein film with a Velázquez painting – the authors cross the normal boundaries between high culture and popular entertainment, and make unexpected connections across time and media. Building on Hockney’s groundbreaking book Secret Knowledge, they argue that film, photography, painting and drawing are deeply interconnected. Insightful and thought provoking, A History of Pictures is an important contribution to our appreciation of how we represent our reality. This new edition has a revised final chapter with some of Hockney’s latest works, including the stained-glass window in Westminster Abbey.

‘I have a more or less irresistible passion for books’ Vincent van Gogh

Vincent’s Books Van Gogh and the Writers who Inspired Him Mariella Guzzoni Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was famously driven by his passion for God, for art – and for books. Vincent’s life with books is examined here chapter by chapter, from his early adulthood, when he considered becoming a pastor, to his decision to become a painter, right up to the end of his life. He moved from Holland to Paris to Provence; at each moment, ideas he encountered in books consistently defined and guided his thoughts and his life. Vincent’s letters to his brother refer to at least 200 authors. Books and readers – whether dreaming or deeply absorbed – are frequent subjects of his paintings. Vincent not only read fiction, he also knew many works of art from detailed descriptions and illustrations in monographs, biographies and museum guides. Always keeping up to date, he never missed the latest literary and artistic magazines. This original study takes the reader on an artistic-literary journey through Vincent’s discoveries, his favourite authors and best-loved books, revealing a continuous dialogue between his own work, the artists and the authors who inspired him, and giving life to his comment: ‘Books and reality and art are the same kind of thing for me.’

An accessible introduction to Edvard Munch’s life and work Øystein Ustvedt has extensive personal and professional experience with the works of Edvard Munch, particularly as head of the Stenersen Museum and in his role as curator at the National Museum in Oslo, where he has been since 2004. He has published widely on Munch and has curated several exhibitions of his work.

Edvard Munch An Inner Life Øystein Ustvedt

The Artistic Renewal (1900–1916) The years leading into the 1900s were the start of an interesting phase in Edvard Munch’s work, dominated by two conditions: a close connection to the era’s leading cultural activities on the continent, and an artistic renewal. These conditions were, of course, related – but there were also other reasons why Munch came to spend so much time abroad during this period, and especially in Germany. In the autumn of 1902, Munch had entered into an intimate but somewhat agonising love affair with Tulla Larsen, a wealthy woman six years his junior. The relationship came to an end with a pistol shot in Åsgårdstrand – nobody was killed, but the incident had a profound effect on the artist. But first, let’s take a brief look at Munch’s growing network and artistic renewal. The fact that Munch was attempting something different in his paintings is evident in his use of brighter colours and stronger luminous effects and brushwork. But his subject matter also changed to include fertility and the harvest, powerful male bodies, stalwart workers, sparkling winter landscapes and the radiant sun. As previously, the subject was still often depicted frontally, in a straightforward manner and with reduced spatial depth. But the soft, curving linear interplay of the 1890s tran-

vulnerable and exposed. In the portrait Woman in Grey, she is portrayed on her way out, no longer just a model but an individual, with her own life and psyche. She stands at the border between being a model and being herself.

ART AND LIFE At Ekely Munch often painted outdoors, and many of the works he created were light, lucid and colourful. The lush garden in particular remains the quintessence of Munch’s unrelenting drive to create, and his undiminished skill. Munch himself referred to his works as his ‘children’, and they now swarmed forth in huge numbers. Often, the immediate surroundings served as the initiator of painterly explorations and analyses of the passing of the seasons. The view from the property was diverse: some green hills towards the west, the fjord to the south, the lights of the city to the north-east, and a small forest of old, knotted elm trees close by. The red servants’ quarters building was often used as a point of focus, painted from various angles, at different times of day, and in varying light. Munch shared this interest in gardens with several other modern artists, such as Claude Monet, who cultivated large gardens in Giverny. The garden was a place where the artist could become immersed in the instruments and possibilities of painting; explore light and the effects of colour, compositional approaches, and the expressive power of each brushstroke. But Munch often combined this with some kind of human presence: people at work, or simply outdoors, and most often women. Traces of people are present even in works where they are not visible. This reminds us of how Munch started out by describing himself as a painter of everyday life. During the period he spent in Kragerø, Munch had started painting scenes of animal husbandry, with horses and dogs being popular models. Two horses, one light and one dark, constitute a striking pair of contrasts in lavish depictions of

Why does Edvard Munch still fascinate us? Our preoccupation with the artist has reached new heights in recent decades, as demonstrated by recordbreaking international auctions of his works and exhibitions at such prestigious institutions as the British Museum, Tate Modern, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. One reason is that Munch created a number of iconic modern paintings: The Scream, Madonna, The Kiss, Vampire and Melancholy – these are paintings many immediately recognise. This new, highly accessible introduction to the artist acquaints us with his portraits, landscapes, depictions of everyday life, large figure compositions, small colour sketches, images of animals and depictions of children. Munch’s works explore love, suffering and the human condition, as well as the lyrical beauty of both nature and the quotidian. Art historian Øystein Ustvedt tells the story of Munch’s life and art, setting his works in their social context and exploring why they have endured. Munch’s art bears witness to his multi-faceted and dramatically inclined nature and life; to an artist who was simultaneously a tradition-bound realist and an experimental modernist.

‘My art is a self-confession – in it I seek to clarify my relationship with the world. But at the same time I have always thought and felt that my art could also clarify other people’s quest for the truth’ Edvard Munch

Les Enfants terribles, 1852 Mine et pastel sur papier, 123 × 56,8 cm

An exuberant display of fecund imagination and keen observation, Edgar Degas’s renowned images of the Paris Opéra are among the most sophisticated and visually compelling works he ever created. Celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Opéra’s founding, Degas at the Opéra presents approximately 100 of the artist’s best-known and beloved works in a range of media, including paintings, pastels, drawings, prints and sculpture. Degas (1834–1917) is celebrated as ‘the painter of dancers’, a subject that dominated his art for nearly four decades. Although there have been many books and exhibitions celebrating his love of the ballet, this volume is the first to consider his enduring fascination with the Paris Opéra. A music lover and regular visitor to performances, Degas explored both the public spaces of the Opéra – auditorium, stage and boxes – as well as more private ones, including dance studios and backstage. He immortalized the players in this dazzling universe in such paintings as La Loge, La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans and Le Foyer de la Danse. They and many other works are reproduced here, accompanied by texts by a distinguished team of art historians.

Emphasizing the vitality of nineteenth-century art, the authors use evocative and lucid prose to demonstrate how paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings by David, Géricault, Turner, Homer, Cassatt, Rodin, Van Gogh and many others remain relevant today.

Van Eyck Edited by Till-Holger Borchert, Jan Dumolyn and Maximiliaan Martens Accompanies the exhibition ‘Van Eyck: An Optical Revolution’ at the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent from 1 February to 30 April 2020.

Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck (c. 1390–1441) towered above his contemporaries. With his unprecedented technique, scientific knowledge and unparalleled powers of observation, Van Eyck lifted oil painting to previously unseen heights and helped determine the course of Western art. This catalogue accompanies the largest ever exhibition of Van Eyck’s work at the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent. As well as reproducing artworks by Van Eyck, it also includes several pieces from his studio and other international masterpieces from the late Middle Ages, making the world of Van Eyck more tangible than ever. It unravels some of the myths that surround Van Eyck and his technique while showing his complete oeuvre and his influence in a new perspective. Central to the exhibition are the eight restored exterior panels of the Ghent Altarpiece – the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb – an exceptional loan from St Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent. Including essays by leading experts from around the world, this book will be an indispensable resource for Van Eyck fans and scholars alike.

Interior of a circular building with arches and flights of steps 1755-1762 Pen and brown ink 270 x 410 mm. 1908,0616.39 Provenance: Probably William Gott; and by descent to his son, John Gott, Bishop of Truro; his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 20 March 1908, part of lot 172. Exhibitions: London 1968, part of no. 27. Venice 1978, no. 28. Hull and London 1995, no. 163. Poole and elsewhere, 2016-18, no. 53. Literature: Thomas 1954, under no. 25.

Similar in spirit and motifs to no. 37 [1908,0616.6] and thus probably dating from the same period, although this drawing cannot be related to The Crossing of St Peter’s from the Vedute di Roma. The drawing has usually been described as a free adaptation of a design by Filippo Juvarra for Scene X of Filippo Amadei’s opera Teodosio il Giovane (published 1711), but the connection is loose at best. The style of the drawing, with its scribbled hatching and powerful ink lines, make it clear that it must date from the 1750s or 1760s. Although the residual influence of Juvarra cannot be discounted, it seems more likely that Piranesi conceived this composition as an independent fantasy, based around the play of curved forms.

The Venetian-born artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) is best known for his dramatic etchings of the architecture and antiquities of his adopted home city of Rome and for his extraordinary flights of spatial fancy, such as Le Carceri (‘Prisons’). Published to coincide with an exhibition at the British Museum, this volume explores Piranesi’s celebrated skill as a draughtsman. While many studies focus on Piranesi’s activities as a printmaker, this beautifully illustrated book explores new dimensions of his art by focusing on his drawings. Curator and author Sarah Vowles establishes a clear relationship between his drawings and prints, discusses the involvement of studio hands in his late works, and examines how his style as a draughtsman evolved. Piranesi: visions of antiquity reveals the quality and lasting impact of the pen and chalk studies by a remarkably talented artist, as demonstrated by the superb collection at the British Museum.

Turner yet is contemporary, original and innovative. Turner had an extraordinary capacity to paint in ways that confounded his contemporaries and still amaze us today; Smibert’s method of painting in Turner’s style ingeniously draws together ideas and principles from East and West to bring out an entirely new perspective on Turner’s practice. A working manual, Turner’s Apprentice brings together elements of practice from historic masters, including Claude Lorrain and Claude Monet: this is a book for anyone aspiring to learn from any master. Fully illustrated with works by Turner and other major artists, as well as practical, step-bystep demonstrations, it offers a perfect companion for anyone seeking to understand by doing. ‘Outstanding. Christopher Neve writes beautifully, unaffectedly and with great attack’ Financial Times ‘It is that rare thing, a modern vade mecum’ Observer, Books of the Year

Unquiet Landscape Places and Ideas in 20th-Century British Painting Christopher Neve Christopher Neve’s classic book is a journey into the imagination through the English landscape. How is it that artists, by thinking in paint, have come to regard the landscape as representing states of mind? ‘Painting’, says Neve, ‘is a process of finding out, and landscape can be its thesis.’ What he is writing is not precisely art history: it is about pictures, about landscape and about thought. Over the years, he was able to have discussions with many of the thirty or so artists he focuses on, the inspiration for the book having come from his talks with Ben Nicholson; and he has immersed himself in their work, their countryside, their ideas. Because he is a painter himself, and an expert on 20th-century art, Neve is well equipped for such a journey. Few writers have conveyed more vividly the mixture of motives, emotions, unconscious forces and contradictions which culminate in the creative act of painting. Each of the thirteen chapters has a theme and explores its significance for one or more of the artists. The problem of time, for instance, is considered in relation to Paul Nash, God in relation to David Jones, music to Ivon Hitchens, hysteria to Edward Burra, abstraction to Ben Nicholson, ‘the spirit in the mass’ to David Bomberg. There are also chapters about painters’ ideas on specific types of country: about Eric Ravilious and the chalk landscape, Joan Eardley and the sea, and Cedric Morris and the garden. This new edition features a new preface and a new text on the artist Sheila Fell.

The Story of Scottish Art Lachlan Goudie This is the fascinating story of how Scotland has defined itself through its art over the past 5000 years, from the earliest enigmatic Neolithic symbols etched onto the landscape of Kilmartin Glen to Glasgow’s fame as a centre of artistic innovation today. Artist and BBC broadcaster Lachlan Goudie passionately narrates the joys and struggles of artists across the millennia striving to fulfil their vision and the dramatic transformations of Scottish society reflected in their art. The Story of Scottish Art is beautifully illustrated with the diverse artworks that form Scotland’s long tradition of bold creativity: Pictish carved stones and Celtic metalwork; Renaissance palaces and chapels; paintings of Scottish life and landscapes by Horatio McCulloch, David Wilkie, the Glasgow Boys and Joan Eardley; designs by master architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh; and collage and sculpture by Pop Art pioneer Eduardo Paolozzi. Lachlan Goudie tells the compelling story of how and why these and many other Scottish masterpieces were created, and the impact they have had on the world.

Inside Francis Bacon Edited by Martin Harrison Essays by Martin Harrison, Christopher Bucklow, Katharina Günther, Francesca Pipe, Sophie Pretorius, Joyce H. Townsend and Sarah Whitfield 22

The third instalment in the Bacon Estate’s groundbreaking series discloses and analyses the most exciting new research and information to emerge in many years on this elusive artist. Three of the essays, by Francesca Pipe, Sophie Pretorius and Martin Harrison, are based on archives recently added to the collection of the Estate of Francis Bacon. Very little is known about Bacon’s early career, and the diaries of his two first patrons provide a far deeper understanding of his formative years than has been accessible hitherto. Especially revelatory are the extensive records kept over a long period by Bacon’s doctor, Paul Brass: what they reveal will revolutionise thinking on Bacon. Sarah Whitfield sheds new light on both Bonnard and Bacon; she has identified concerns the two artists shared that will surprise as well as enlighten. Katharina Günther’s essay examines the complex interplay between Bacon and his closest friend, the artist Denis Wirth Miller, as men but principally as artists. Joyce Townsend draws on her scientific and technical investigations into Tate’s most important Bacon paintings to advance significant new information about Bacon’s methods. Christopher Bucklow is an expert on Japanese art, which forms an important, if unexpected, aspect of his rethinking of the metaphor system in Bacon’s paintings.

The definitive – and long overdue – illustrated biography of a key figure in mid 20thcentury British art Carol Jacobi is Curator of British Art at Tate Britain, and has published and broadcast widely on 19th- and 20th-century British art, most recently ‘Picasso’s portraits of Isabel Rawsthorne’ in the Burlington Magazine. She was co-curator of the major Tate exhibition Van Gogh and Britain.

Illustrated throughout 24.0 x 16.5cm 352pp ISBN 978 0 500 971055 March £25.00

Out of the Cage The Art of Isabel Rawsthorne Carol Jacobi Isabel Rawsthorne’s painting career at the centre of the Parisian and London avant-gardes was eclipsed by the many occasions on which her friends made her the subject of their art, notably Epstein, Derain, Giacometti, Picasso and Bacon. This pioneering, working-class painter exhibited from the early 1930s, was influential in the 1940s and well known in the 1960s, but in her later years Giacometti’s and Bacon’s blockbuster biographies made her famous as a muse. Rawsthorne’s work is now in major collections, and this beautifully illustrated book re-writes the pre- and post-war art history of which she was a part: it is traced through the upheavals of the 20th century and her singular relationships with some of its most fascinating figures. A decade of research into the period, Rawsthorne’s art and archives, and the memories of friends, has revealed for the first time her role in a rebel group at Liverpool School of Art; success and tragedy in the 1930s when she was studio assistant to Jacob Epstein; her life-long collaborations with Alberto Giacometti; and, after the war, with Francis Bacon and with African Modernism in the 1960s, as well as her exceptional late work. It also tells the full story of her break from art during the Second World War, when she worked for the government in black propaganda – and may have been a spy.

The definitive anthology of Linda Nochlin’s writings on women in art

Women Artists The Linda Nochlin Reader Edited by Maura Reilly Linda Nochlin (1931–2017) was one of the most pioneering art historians of our time. Her groundbreaking article ‘Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?’ was an impassioned feminist rallying cry that called traditional art historical practices into question and led to a major revision of the discipline. Women Artists brings together thirty essential essays from throughout Nochlin’s career, including two written specially for this collection, and an opening interview in which she reflects on her life’s work and the position of women artists today. Her major thematic texts, such as ‘Women Artists After the French Revolution’ and ‘Starting from Scratch: The Beginnings of Feminist Art History’ appear alongside the landmark 1971 essay and its rejoinder, ‘“Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?”: Thirty Years After.’ Other entries focus on a selection of major women artists, followed by biographies of all the artists discussed in the book and a bibliography of Nochlin’s publications.

Celebrated abstract painter Bridget Riley in conversation with some of the world’s leading art historians and artists

Bridget Riley: Dialogues on Art 24

Edited by Robert Kudielka On the occasion of a major exhibition of Bridget Riley’s work at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1992, BBC Radio broadcast an illuminating series of five dialogues, each one between Riley and a personality from the art world. These talks are collected in this volume, expertly edited by the art historian Robert Kudielka. With Neil MacGregor, art historian and former director of the British Museum, Bridget Riley discusses the art of the past in relation to the present; with the celebrated art historian and theorist Ernst Gombrich she explores the perception of colour in painting; with the artist Michael Craig-Martin, she addresses the theory and practice of abstraction; and with the critics Bryan Robertson and Andrew Graham-Dixon she talks about the events and travels that have shaped her life as an artist. The publication of this newly revised edition coincides with Bridget Riley’s major retrospective exhibition at the National Galleries of Scotland and the Hayward Gallery, London (2019–2020). Robert Kudielka is Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin.

‘A more novel and compelling book about art’s version of the afterlife, and how it is inflected by worldly politics and reality, can hardly be imagined’ Observer, Books of the Year 2018

Heaven on Earth Painting and the Life to Come T.J. Clark The idea of heaven on earth haunts the human imagination. The day will come, say believers, when the pain and confusion of mortal life will give way to a transfigured community. Such a vision of the world seems indelible. Even politics, some reckon, has not escaped from the realm of the sacred: its dreams of the future still borrow their imagery from the prophets. In Heaven on Earth, T.J. Clark sets out to investigate the very different ways painting has given form to the dream of God’s kingdom come. He goes back to the late Middle Ages and Renaissance – to Giotto in Padua, Bruegel facing the horrors of religious war, Poussin painting the Sacraments, Veronese unfolding the human comedy. Was it to painting’s advantage, is Clark’s question, that in an age of enforced orthodoxy (threats of hellfire, burnings at the stake) artists could reflect on the powers and limitations of religion without putting their thoughts into words? At the heart of the book stands Bruegel’s ironic but tender picture of The Land of Cockaigne, and also Veronese’s inscrutable Allegory of Love. The story ends with Picasso’s Fall of Icarus, made for UNESCO in 1958, which already seems to signal – perhaps to prescribe – an age when all futures are dead.

T.J. Clark is Professor Emeritus of the History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of The Painting of Modern Life and Farewell to an Idea. He writes art criticism regularly for the London Review of Books. His other publications include Image of the People, also published by Thames & Hudson.

‘A crisp, clear and, above all, highly enjoyable guide to Greek and Roman art, from the evolution of sculpture to the detailed techniques of vasepainting and fresco’ Natalie Haynes

Greek and Roman Art Susan Woodford For more than 2,000 years the art of Greece and Rome has lain at the heart of western civilization. This book recaptures the excitement of the artists who first created it. It traces the daring innovations of those who, defying traditional wisdom, explored new ideas; it describes the valiant struggles of sculptors and painters to portray – for the first time – both the complexities of the human form and the richness of human emotions. So much has been destroyed by the ravages of time that Greek and Roman art seems to consist only of impressive ruins and broken fragments. Yet the creative achievements of the Greeks and their legacy, as adapted by the Romans, have never lost their power.

Susan Woodford was born and educated in the USA (BA Harvard; MA and PhD Columbia). Since moving to London, she has taught art history and lectured at the British Museum. She has published many books and articles on Greek and Roman art and has also written Looking at Pictures in the Art Essentials series.

Dick Bruna Bruce Ingman and Ramona Reihill This latest volume in the successful Illustrators series examines the life and work of Dutch artist Dick Bruna (1927–2017), creator of the world-famous children’s character Miffy. However, as this book shows, Bruna’s work extends beyond the thirty-two Miffy books, including not only more than ninety other illustrated books but also around 2,000 book covers for the family publishing firm of A. W. Bruna & Zoon. These covers, many for well-known detective stories, revealed Bruna’s eye for colour and ability to achieve immediate visual impact, which also made him an outstanding poster and stamp designer. Ingman and Reihill show how the simple complexity of Bruna’s work appeals to children, artists and designers alike, capturing the imagination across ages and artistic disciplines. The book includes previously unpublished drawings and paintings from Bruna’s personal archive, dating from when he began sketching and painting as a boy in wartime Holland. The development of the character of Miffy is illustrated and there are photographs of Bruna from throughout his life and of his studio in Utrecht.

‘For millions of children, Dick Bruna’s books are the first they will encounter. They don’t know how lucky they are, for his stories are a wonderful window on the world; a world of colour and shapes and words, put together in a form that will stay with them for the rest of their lives’ Michael Bond

Aubrey Beardsley Decadence and Desire Jan Marsh Aubrey Beardsley (1872–1898) was only twenty-five when he died from tuberculosis, but in his short life he established a reputation as one of the most accomplished – and controversial – illustrators of his day. Astonishingly, all his work was created in the course of only six years, yet his contribution to the visual language of Art Nouveau was profound; today, his work is instantly recognizable for its use of black ink and flowing lines on white paper, along with its erotically charged subject matter. Not all his work was sexually provocative – much was satirical, attacking the decadent mores of the time – but some was and remains shocking, taking its stylistic inspiration from Japanese shunga and Greek vase painting and its thematic inspiration from mythology, history, poetry and drama. This book offers a wealth of illustrations by Beardsley, and introduces his exquisitely crafted drawings and prints to a new audience. Including a text by Jan Marsh, Aubrey Beardsley brings together a carefully curated selection of works from Beardsley’s tragically short but highly productive life. Jan Marsh is the author of biographies of Christina and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, coeditor of the letters of Jane Morris, former president of the William Morris Society, and curator of ‘Black Victorians in British Art’ (Manchester Art Gallery, 2005) and ‘Pre-Raphaelite Sisters’ (National Portrait Gallery, London, 2019).

Kimono The Japanese Art of Pattern and Fashion Edited by Anna Jackson The Khalili Collection of kimono comprises over 200 garments and spans 300 years of Japanese textile artistry. The form of the T-shaped, straight-seamed, front-wrapping kimono has changed very little over the centuries, yet the collection reveals an astonishing variety of designs, including formal, semiformal and informal kimono, undergarments and jackets, worn by women, men and children. Represented are the sophisticated garments of the imperial court, samurai aristocracy and affluent merchant classes of the Edo period (1603– 1868), the shifting styles and new colour palette of Meiji-period dress (1868– 1912) and particularly the bold and dazzling kimono of the Taisho (1912–26) and early Showa (1926–89) eras, which utilized innovative techniques and drew fresh inspiration from both past traditions and the modern world. Here, an international team of authors – including the former curator of textiles, Tokyo National Museum – examines the art and evolution of the kimono in the historical context of the 17th to the 18th centuries, under the editorship of Anna Jackson, Keeper of the Asian Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

A close friend of some of the leading wits and writers of her days, from Jean Cocteau to poet Pierre Reverdy, Coco Chanel was fierce and uncompromising in her pronouncements on fashion, women and life. Much like her successor, Karl Lagerfeld, she never shied away from controversy, declaring one day of her detractors: ‘I don’t care what you think about me. I don’t think about you at all’. Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel is an icon of fashion, and can lay claim to having invented the look of the 20th century. At the height of the Belle Époque, she liberated women from their corsets, bobbed their hair, put them in bathing suits and sent them out to get tanned in the sun. She introduced the little black dress; trousers for women; costume jewelry; the exquisitely comfortable suit that became her trademark. Early in the Roaring Twenties, Chanel made the first ever couture perfume – No. 5 – presenting it in the famous little square-cut flagon that, inspired by Picasso and Cubism, became the arch symbol of the Art Deco style. No. 5 remains the most popular scent ever created. This volume, published to accompany a landmark exhibition in Paris, traces the birth and evolution of Chanel’s timeless style. Specially commissioned photographs showcase the clothing, while essays by fashion historians illuminate events, themes and the spirit of the age. Rare archival documents and portraits of Gabrielle Chanel herself make this an indispensable volume for fashion historians and connoisseurs of style.

The iconoclastic designer Alexander McQueen (1969– 2010) – who tragically took his own life at the height of his global success – reconstituted perceptions of bodily form and beauty through eloquent and theatrical layers of culture. His dark imagination was bolstered by widely admired technical skills of cut and construction, which gave his less extravagant output a refined wearability. McQueen left school at sixteen and took up an apprenticeship in Savile Row with bespoke tailors Anderson & Sheppard and then with Gieves & Hawkes. His next employment was with theatrical costumiers Angels & Bermans, where he was introduced to the historical methods of cut and make. He worked briefly with Koji Tatsuno and then Romeo Gigli, before being accepted on the Master’s of Arts in fashion at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. His graduate

collection was bought by the stylist Isabella Blow. In 1996, McQueen replaced John Galliano (see p.172) as head designer at Givenchy (see p.132), and in 2000 the Gucci Group took over the majority shareholding of McQueen’s own label, retaining the designer as director. McQueen’s achievements were recognized by numerous awards, including British Designer of the Year in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003, and International Designer of the Year from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2003. The label is now under the creative direction of Sarah Burton, who was appointed in 2011 to design the wedding dress of Prince William’s bride Catherine Middleton.

McQueen’s posthumous A/W 10/11 collection references Byzantine art and religion.

The ‘Highland Rape’ scene uses the most recognized tartan – Royal Stewart.

Notorious for its ambiguous presentation of ‘tartaned’, dishevelled and violently disrobed models – allegedly as a metaphorical indictment of the English subjugation of Scotland – the ‘Highland Rape’ collection was successfully controversial. Tartan is sculpted into bodices and tailored into flared or pencil mid-calf skirts. Lowrise trousers are partnered with cropped chiffon tops with high tartan collars.

Elements of bondage appear in this wide-ranging collection.

A perforated-leather sheath dress features in a collection that makes unfettered play with transparency and perforation, and with tailored or metal-cast exoskeletons. There are sartorial experiments that reveal exquisite cutting techniques: the revers that never stops until it has draped and reversed back up to the waist, or the rigid geometry of intercut fabrics that sit with the precision of a falling shadow.

ALEXANDER McQUEEN

With the ‘bumster’ – a designer act of sartorial daring that escalated to a global phenomenon – McQueen exhibited his creative authority.

Although antecedents of McQueen’s low-rise trousers are seen in ranges dating back to 1992, it is only in the context of his S/S 96 collection, ‘The Hunger’, that they take a greater significance. Taking the graphic clarity of exotic plumage in a contained palette of red, black, inky navy, white and silver grey, garments are formed into new constructions with an incisive slash, chop or flash of the designer’s shears. Satin, brocade, lace, leather, metallic tulle and linen are interlinked in a range of outfits – feathered, tufted and occasionally be-tailed with magpie panache or geisha fragility. A skullencasing oval mask in metallic voile resonates with the delicate transparency of devoré feather prints. There is a suggestion of the threat of predation in the dress with a claw-wielding leopard printed in sinister chiaroscuro or from the dresses overlaid with a trapper’s mist net.

Home Computers 100 Icons that defined a digital generation Alex Wiltshire • Photography by John Short 42

It is all too easy to forget, as we go through life with computers in our pockets, that the digital revolution started at home. Home Computers showcases the quirky and characterful beginnings of a commercial product that would come to unite the globe: the personal computer. As so much technology is forgotten once it is superseded, this is a celebration of industrial design and techno-utopianism from the not-so-distant past. Conceived as a visual sourcebook of the most popular, most powerful and most idiosyncratic computers to grace our workspaces, this timely publication offers a reflection on how far we’ve come and a nostalgic look at a time when digital worlds could be contained in a box and turned off, rather than everpresent in our lives. Home Computers opens with a scene-setting retrospective by computer and gaming writer Alex Wiltshire. The book’s heart is a series of commissioned photographs that capture details of early user-interface design, letterforms and logos. Images are enlivened by a potted history of each device, the inventors or personalities behind it, and its innovations and influences. These wonderful machines offered a bridge from the analogue to the digital. As such, we would do well to reflect on, and celebrate, the profound changes they have brought.

Virgin Blue: How one of Virgin’s scrappiest upstarts gained traction against stiff competition.

When Richard suggested launching a budget domestic airline in Australia, he was met with little enthusiasm within Virgin Group. His instinct to push ahead was proved right, however: Virgin Blue became the fastest-growing Virgin company of all time. Fittingly for such a no-frills brand, the idea was pitched to Richard over drinks, with ideas sketched on to beer mats. “No business case, no thesis, just big-ticket thoughts,” recalls Virgin Blue co-founder Brett Godfrey. “From those beer coasters we agreed five points on one page that I had to secure for the investment to occur.” A huge boost came when Ansett Australia – the main competitor to the dominant airline, Qantas, with a third of the market – went bust shortly after 9/11. “We bet the shop by buying every single aircraft we could get our hands on,” Brett reveals. “The market crashed, and we saw a oncein-a-generation opportunity to pick up a new fleet for prices I’d never seen before, and never since.”

OPPOSITE, TOP No-frills airline Virgin Blue played on the Australian slang for a redhead: a ‘bluey’.

OPPOSITE, BOTTOM Virgin Blue co-founder Brett Godfrey (centre) with some of the airline’s fun-loving crew.

To save money, Virgin Blue launched as the world’s first online-only airline. It relied on media coverage rather than advertising and attracted attention however it could. “We emblazoned our phone number and website across the hull of the aircraft,”

Brett explains. After its initial press conference, the cheeky start-up became the lead story on every major Australian news network and took over the front pages the next day too. The name ‘Blue’, at first glance a strange choice for a famously ‘red’ brand, is an in-joke: in Aussie slang, ‘bluey’ means a redhead. Crew were encouraged to have fun, and antics ranged from hiding in overhead lockers to organising races between passengers, passing toilet paper over their heads down the seat rows without breaking it. Instead of having ‘baggage handlers’ hidden behind the scenes, Virgin Blue proudly named them its ‘pit crew’ and gave them bright red uniforms. “Australia had been a graveyard for startup airlines, but the Virgin brand and our cheeky attitude was our ‘shield’ – coupled with a value-based model that resonated with irreverent Australians,” adds Brett. “We didn’t try to compete with the big guys: we created a new market. Within three years we were one of Australia’s most trusted and respected brands.”

Virgin by Design Virgin and Nick Carson Virgin by Design is the official, anniversary volume celebrating 50 years of daring innovation and creativity at Virgin, presenting the stories, the people and the work that went into the building and shaping of a much-loved and globally respected brand. More than a retrospective, it gets to the heart of the values that make the Virgin brand so unique, communicating how those values resonate with people today – and will continue to do so in the future. Based on in-depth research and interviews with all the key people who have played a part in Virgin’s companies past and present, Virgin by Design is organized into ten chapters – each with fully illustrated case studies – that provide a sense of how hard work and brilliant ideas have resonated with audiences worldwide. Spanning the full 50-year chronology from Virgin’s beginnings as a record store to its bold future in space tourism with Virgin Galactic, the book also embraces Virgin’s broad diversity in terms of its global presence as a brand, its mission and purpose to change business for good, and its offerings across multiple sectors, including travel, banking, health and fitness, communications, and entertainment. Virgin by Design is packed with the wit, verve, spirit of adventure and ‘how it was done’ insights that will make it a must-have publication.

Graphic Design School Principles The first part of this book is concerned with design principles, the building blocks that connect the basics of all good design. Every discipline has its own set of rules, methods, technical requirements and specialised technologies. Each one is rooted in the interactions of its history, theory and practice, but unlike learning law or biology, the language of design is visual. It involves the need for a highly developed awareness of visual relationships, proportion, the perceptions of visual principles, and of the modern world and its complex events and practices. A good designer can filter this information and create relevant, engaging, visually eloquent design that responds to multiple problems, needs and contexts. While a design student needs to develop the research, conceptdevelopment, compositional and organisational skills associated

with design, he or she also needs to be engaged with the world, and interested, aware and sensitive to the changing contexts in which design plays a part. Chapter 1 introduces the primary and secondary research skills needed by designers, followed by an introduction to theories of image, the importance of audience, and of organising your work and time. In Chapter 2, the idea of form is spotlighted. Form involves composition of the fundamentals of design (text, image, proportion, space, colour, scale) and requires an understanding of the visual dynamics created by combining them with intent. Understanding form comes from the ability to see intrinsic and subtle qualities in the various design elements, and the observation of, and sensitivity to, the changing relationships between them. Chapter 3 introduces

typography, a core skill for all designers that is layered with complexity, and cannot be understated for its beauty, history, versatility and ability to influence an audience. Developing a deep understanding of typography is of critical importance. Chapter 4 introduces colour as one of the primary tools in the language of design, including theory, terminology, associations, issues of legibility and emotional response. Managing colour and understanding its ability to communicate are skills that also evolve with greater understanding of its influences. Whatever design discipline you ultimately pursue, from editorial art direction to web and motion graphics, these basic principles will give you a solid foundation and serve as the groundwork for further exploration and understanding of design and the role of the designer.

Fundamentals of colour

A thorough understanding of colour is essential to expert design, and is one of the most important tools in graphic design. There are infinite variations of colours at the designer’s disposal, and endless ways of combining them across many media, from printed inks to screen-based colours, each with their own characteristics. colour has a unique, complex language, and the ability to change its meaning when partnered with other colours. When choosing colours to incorporate into your design, you will need to

Colour terminology

To understand how to choose or assign colour for a specific purpose, designers must first develop knowledge of how colour works, how colours are classified, and the terms used to describe them. colour is differentiated in three main ways: hue, tone and saturation. ‘hue’ refers to the colour’s generic name – for example, red, yellow or blue. A single hue will have many variations ranging from light (tint) to dark (shade). This is called tone or value. A single hue will also vary according to its saturation or chroma (also known as intensity). saturation ranges from full intensity to low intensity, or from brightness to greyness. colour can also be described by its temperature and movement. hues in the red spectrum appear warmer and closer to the viewer than hues in the blue spectrum, which appear colder and further away. complementary colours, such as red and green, lie opposite each other on the colour wheel, whereas analogous colours, such as green and blue, lie adjacent to each other. The former are associated with contrast; the latter are linked to harmony. certain colours have a profound effect on each other when combined. They can vibrate or blend, appear vibrant when partnered with one colour and muted when placed with another. The more you experiment with colour, the more you will understand how to select and group various hues for meaning.

consider issues of contrast and harmony, and how these might affect legibility in typography. You can also set the mood of a design by using the psychology of colour, but you must be sure your selected colours convey the correct message at an unconscious level, and that they are suitable

Red

R Hue distinguishes one colour from another. it is the generic name of the colour – red, say, as opposed to blue.

R Tone (or value) is the relative lightness

equivalent to brightness. A line of high intensity is a bright colour, whereas one of low intensity is a dull colour. Two colours can be of the same line but have different intensities.

GLOSSARY Additive colour: System used on monitors and televisions, based on RGB (red, green, blue). When combined, these form white light. Analogous colour: Colours that lie adjacent to each other on the colour wheel – for example, blue and green. CMYK: Cyan, magenta, yellow, key (black): the four colours that make up the full-colour printing process. Complementary colour: Colours that lie opposite each other on the colour wheel – for example, red and green.

of pigment are shown on the wheel. The primary colours are red, yellow and blue. secondary colours are made by mixing any two primary colours together, producing orange, green and violet. A tertiary colour is produced by mixing a primary colour with the secondary colour nearest to it on the wheel. The tertiary colours here are red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet.

This same effect can be viewed digitally by working with transparencies and adding layers to your file. experimenting with colour will help you learn to control the hierarchy in page design, create readability in typography, and set the mood and pace.

Secondary colour: A mix of any two primaries: orange, green or violet. Spot colour: Any flat colour, like Pantone or Toyo colours, printed as a solid, and not made up of CMYK. Graphic Design School is an essential coursebook for all graphic design students. It is organized into two main sections, ‘principles’ and ‘practice’. The first section deals with the fundamentals of design, such as composition, hierarchy, layout, typography, grid structure, colour and so on. The second section puts these basics into practice, and gives information about studio techniques and production issues relevant to a number of different graphic design disciplines. The last part of the second section provides an overview of some of the different career choices open to students entering the graphic design field. This seventh edition of Graphic Design School features all-new assignments and fully updated reading lists. Over a third of the images are entirely new, and include a mix of professional work and outstanding student pieces. In addition, Part II: Practice Plus features new software and revisits old print technologies – for example, risograph printing and screen printing – which are becoming increasingly popular forms of production again.

The Big Idea

Introduction

A primer for the 21st century Innovative and informative, provocative and persuasive, The Big Idea series looks at the fundamental ideas that make such a big impact on our lives and our world today. The unique visual approach and intelligently layered text make complex concepts easy to understand and give you all the tools you need to join the debate.

No wonder people feel anxious. Scientific method venistiatae vidus, sed quati corrovides aut officat inciend usaperibus im aut alistiant optas estis consequam volo debiti rerunto con rehenis min rae molupti nventot aeperum, ut quatum, idella voluptio consequam inimincit, et omnimintius.

Technology adoption in US households

But the cause of the anxiety is unacknowledged by those who do not know how technology is progressing. Unless they understand what the machines are actually doing to them and their society, they can only blame partially grasped developments for their own feelings, and that can never result in the kind of reasoned analysis that Glendinning believes is the way to build a healthier society. It can only lead to fear and uncertainty.

Almost all of technological progress has happened in the last lifetime or two, especially since the invention of the computer, and the time between someone having an idea and that idea being disseminated around the world has shrunk so much that we have future shock. Alvin Toffler mapped out human history in terms of 800 lifetimes. Invention up until the last one or two spans of 80 years or so took place slowly over centuries. The developments of the wheel, fire, pottery, language, agriculture, the cart, even steam engines did not appear over a few years but took lifetimes to become widely adopted.

Things started to accelerate when the scientific method was developed by French philosopher René Descartes (1596–1650) in the 17th century, building on ideas by the 10th-century IraqiEgyptian astronomer and mathematician Ibn Al-Haytham (965–1040) and the 16th-century British philosopher Francis Bacon (1561–1626).

• Opinionated reference books: Each can be read as a narrative that explains the principles and concisely evaluates the arguments relevant to each subject. • Quick-recognition text hierarchy: Paragraphs are prioritized using different font sizes – the larger the font size, the more fundamental the paragraph is to the understanding of the overall concept or general argument. • Provocatively illustrated: Juxtaposes historical gems with the latest visual images. • Milestones: An extended back cover flap folds out to reveal a timeline, providing an at-a-glance overview of the topic’s key concepts and events. • Expert authors: High-quality narrative text provides a comprehensive introduction to, and concise analysis of, each subject. • Top-ranking general editor: Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA, ensures consistency of quality and approach and most apposite question formulation across the whole series.

Ecosystem services A term used to describe the various benefits humans get for free from the natural environment: clean drinking water and the pollination of crops, for example.

Environmentalists are sometimes mocked for shouting about current and impending crises, but this really is one. In fact, it is several. It is the seas, the air and the soil, with global warming cooking it all, threatening not only the safety of humans, but also that of hundreds of thousands of other species.

CHAPTER 1

A

In May 2019, the UN released a new report on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The results were stark: 1 million species at risk of extinction. Nowadays, more food, energy and materials are being supplied to people around the world than ever before, but we are pushing nature too far. We are undermining nature’s ability to continue to provide ecosystem services, and we are irreplaceably threatening its many other contributions, too, from water and air quality to a sense of place, culture, identity and well-being. Bob Watson (b. 1948), the scientist leading the UN project put it bluntly: ‘We are eroding the very foundations of economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life worldwide.’

A lucid analysis of the impact on society of the individual use of digital technology in everyday life

Is Technology Making Us Sick? A primer for the 21st Century Ian Douglas Modern technology has enhanced our lives in numerous ways – but, as digital technology crowds further into our personal lives, is it doing us more harm than good? Are we becoming more anxious, depressed and socially isolated, unaware of the manipulating influence of algorithms designed to keep us engaged and to filter the picture of the world we see? Has our online gaming or gambling unwittingly developed into a disturbing addiction? This rigorous and insightful volume assesses the impact of our increased screen time and daily interactions with personal technology on our individual choices, our relationships, and our mental and physical health, and suggests how best to mitigate any adverse effects. Ian Douglas has written widely on science, technology, health, child development and the ways in which they all collide. He spent many years at the Telegraph writing on these topics and as digital development editor. He also ran the website for the British Library and was head of digital at the Spectator.

A primer for the 21st century Alice Bell Climate change is wreaking havoc around the world; our oceans are choking with plastic; the earth’s natural ecosystems have been decimated; and up to one million species are at risk of extinction. In response, governments, corporations and individuals are beginning to change their policies and behaviour – but is it too little, too late? Is it possible to reverse the damage we have done to the planet, or have we reached the point at which we are only able to manage the problems and devastation caused? This astute and disquieting volume offers insightful analysis of a range of key issues including deforestation, global warming, pollution and single-use plastics, and evaluates whether – and how – we can build a planet on which every species can survive. Alice Bell is co-director at climate change charity Possible. She has also worked as an academic and journalist, establishing an interdisciplinary course on climate change at Imperial College London and writing for a range of publications including the Guardian, the Observer and The Times.

Africa State of Mind Contemporary Photography Reimagines a Continent Ekow Eshun 48

A major touring exhibition, also curated by Ekow Eshun, has already successfully shown in Nottingham and Bradford.

With over 300 photographs by more than fifty photographers, Africa State of Mind is a mesmerizing introduction to the creative figures at the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic photography scenes. Gathering together the work of an emergent generation of photographers from across Africa and its diaspora, Africa State of Mind is both a summation of new photographic practice from the last decade and an exploration of the ways in which contemporary photographers from the continent are exploring ideas of ‘Africanness’ to reveal Africa to be a psychological space as much as a physical territory – a state of mind as much as a geographical place. Dispensing with the western colonial view of Africa in purely geographic or topographic terms, Ekow Eshun presents Africa State of Mind in four parts: Hybrid Cities; Zones of Freedom; Myth and Memory; and Inner Landscapes. Each theme, introduced by a text by Eshun, presents selections of work by a new wave of African photographers who are looking both outward and inward: capturing life among the sprawling cities and multitudinous conurbations of the continent, turning the legacy of the continent’s history into the source of resonant new myths and dreamscapes and exploring questions of gender, sexuality and identity. Each of the photographers seeks to capture the experience of what it means, and how it feels, to live in Africa today.

Bill Henson: The Light Fades but the Gods Remain Bill Henson Bill Henson: The Light Fades but the Gods Remain celebrates an extraordinary artist at two stages in his career. Over thirty years have passed since Henson made his iconic Untitled 1985/86 series. Those mesmerizing photographs cast a hazy procession of people and places from Melbourne’s suburb of Glen Waverley, interspersed with dreamlike vignettes of Egyptian structures. Now, Henson has revisited his home suburb. While these photographs return to Glen Waverley, they show an environment that appears to have slipped out of linear time. Henson’s new images are sumptuous and resplendent in their grandeur, but seem to come from another age. Together, the two series provide a glimpse into Henson’s brilliant mind as he ponders the passing of time. Illustrated throughout 32.7 x 27.0cm 168pp ISBN 978 1 760 760434 January £49.95

Wind-etched rocks, patterns in sand; surfers, slick in their wetsuits against the morning sun; a beach filled with people; high-rise buildings against sand and sea, and sunsets over city skylines… The variation in the fall of light on Australia’s landscape seems limitless. 5) NEW YORK, FIRST IMPRESSIONS Thanks to THE GOALIE, I made it to New York for the first time. I got invited in early 1972 by the Museum of Modern Art to an event called ‘New Directors, New Films’. This is now in its 47th year, but I was lucky to be in the first bunch of 10 films of that series. I arrived late in the afternoon in the Warwick Hotel across the street from MOMA. It was rainy and dark, so I only caught a glimpse of the city. The Chrysler Building! Radio City Music Hall!

I spent most of the first night in front of the television set. I had never seen American TV before, had never ever seen a movie interrupted by commercials, never ever before zapped through endless channels. (In Germany we only had two channels at the time.)

The next morning I immediately took a picture from my bed, a first glance at skyscrapers in the window, across the street! The second look was down to Sixth Avenue. There were protesters crossing on W. 54th Street.

As well as being an acclaimed filmmaker and a member of the New German Cinema movement, Wim Wenders (b. 1945) has also made an international name for himself as a photographer, with shows all over the world. He now opens a treasure chest of Polaroids taken during the 1970s and 1980s. Here are portraits of friends, actors and personal heroes; souvenirs of places and events from the life of a young travelling filmmaker; impressions of his first trips to the US, shots of movie icons on American TV screens, the cinemas of provincial Germany in the 1970s, and much more. The adventure of shooting films around the world becomes an almanac of adventure, curiosity and tranquillity. Wenders’ instant photographs are interwoven with his own stories, memories and flights of fancy that weave the images into an intimate and poetic journey. Instant Stories is a photographic road movie of the director’s early years, as he rose to global fame with films such as The Scarlet Letter, Alice in the Cities, Wrong Move, Kings of the Road and The American Friend.

An exploration of Jacques Henri Lartigue’s early photography and a vivid portrayal of Belle-Époque France Louise Baring has written for The Economist, the Independent on Sunday Review, Vogue and the Daily Telegraph. She is the author of several books on photography: Martine Franck; Norman Parkinson: A Very British Glamour; Emmy Andriesse: Hidden Lens; and Dora Maar: Paris in the Time of Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, and Picasso.

‘The other day Mr Szarkowski of the Museum of Modern Art in New York showed me your photographs. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life…. You brought me into your world, and isn’t that, after all the purpose of art?’ Richard Avedon, writing to Lartigue in 1963

Lartigue The Boy and the Belle Époque Louise Baring As a little boy of seven or eight, Jacques Henri Lartigue was given his first camera, and soon was developing his own photographs. Born into a prosperous family, from childhood Lartigue acutely observed the social rituals of the upper echelons of society through his photography. The hand-held Kodak camera, first introduced in 1888, granted the young photographer flexibility to capture the fine details of eccentric family members at home, the elaborate social parade in the Bois de Boulogne, on the beach in Normandy and beyond. Classic images of motor cars and high fashion sit alongside previously unpublished photographs from the Lartigue archive. These images of family beau-monde and demi-monde life are not only evidence of a prodigious talent, but also offer an intimate, adolescent perspective of Belle-Époque Paris, the world of Proust, Debussy and the Nabis, before the outbreak of the First World War. Bonnard and Vuillard used the camera as a reference point for painting, while Eugène Atget documented the architecture of the old Paris ahead of its developers; but Lartigue was the first to harness the immediacy of the snapshot, often capturing his subjects mid-gesture as in real life, creating a new visual language for the 20th century.

An extraordinary body of work capturing the poignancy and universality of everyday lives in Central and Eastern Europe and the Caucasus before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall Fabio Ponzio was born in Milan in 1959. His interest in photography began in 1976, during a trip to the Balkans. Europe, travel and photography have formed the three main threads of his life in the decades since. In 1991 he was awarded the Grand Prix Européen de la Photographie de Arles in France, in 1993 the Mother Jones Foundation Award for Documentary Photography in the United States, and in 1998 the Leica Oskar Barnack Award in Germany. East of Nowhere Fabio Ponzio • Foreword by Herta Müller In 1987 Fabio Ponzio embarked on what was to become a photographic odyssey through Eastern Europe. Starting out in Istanbul, he continued into Poland, where he met a people who had lived through the mines, the war and the gulags. There was little food in the shops and queues for bread were long. In Ceausescu’s Romania, people’s lives were reduced to a succession of dark days; the Securitate wielded absolute control and used informants, bribery and violence to beat the instinct for freedom out of individuals. In Yugoslavia, the beginnings of what was to become the catastrophe of successive years were being laid out, while the West looked on in supreme indifference. In the autumn of 1989, the Wall fell and everything changed. The various regimes of the communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe began to collapse in Budapest, Berlin, Warsaw, Prague, Sofia and Bucharest, in a domino effect that continued in Albania and ended two years later in the Soviet Union. Ponzio continued his travels with a Leica, three Nikons and 100 rolls of film, documenting the lives of the people of the East, fortified through pain and sacrifice and now joined by a new energy, full of hope. Year after year, Ponzio returned to capture the many faces of Eastern Europe, in search of the elements that make up the shared destiny of its peoples. Collected here is his stunning vision of their world: of traditions and faith, humility and courage, vulnerability and survival.

Epic Cycling Climbs Michael Blann The mountains of Europe have many different meanings to many different people. For the locals they are a way of life; for visitors they represent breathtaking beauty, active holidays and peaceful moments. For cyclists, however, the dramatic landscapes mean something quite different: suffering, pain, agony – and glory. From the Ardennes to the Alps, the mountains have provided the setting for the greatest cycling contests for over a century, where human determination and willpower triumph over nature and opponents. In recent years, as cycling’s popularity has changed our cities, made us more active and taken us down less-travelled roads, the mountains of Europe have become the primary destination for everyday riders who want to challenge themselves, experience storied roads and escape everyday life. This book is aimed at all who wish to be inspired by those challenges or celebrate those personal victories. With tributes and personal recollections from leading road cyclists, the photographs and words coalesce into a visual depiction that transcends any single perspective and will inspire awe and wonder in anyone who wishes to confront the power of the mountains.

A photographic voyage to the remote studios of Japan’s most fascinating contemporary craftspeople

Uwe Röttgen is a product designer and Katharina Zettl is a graphic designer. They are both based in Germany. Kengo Kuma is one of Japan’s leading architects and is the designer of the stadium for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Craftland Japan Uwe Röttgen and Katharina Zettl • Foreword by Kengo Kuma In Japanese life and culture, there has never been a clear distinction between art, craft and design. For centuries, generations of artisans have forged and refined their crafts, which have become the envy of the modern world. Regions of Japan are renowned for specific traditions, many of which are born of local materials and the natural settings in which they are produced. Visitors and craft and design enthusiasts have long known about the high quality of craftsmanship and the unique quality of these makers and the objects they create, though few are taken outside the country. Spurred by an awareness of the unseen treasures produced by these craftspeople, Uwe Röttgen and Katharina Zettl set out across the country to find the finest examples, to document the makers and their workshops and the rural landscapes that surround them. The result is a breathtaking odyssey into the heart of Japanese culture, featuring portraits of twenty-five artisans who work with natural materials to produce objects that are intended for everyday life but are worthy of museum display. Photographs and texts, drawn from close collaboration with each maker or studio, depict ancient techniques that continue to flourish, however much the world around them has changed. Craftland Japan is not merely a book about Japanese crafts: it is a glimpse into centuries of tradition and wisdom through the prism of contemporary makers. It celebrates the union of craft, design, materiality and landscape in a manner that most cultures can only hope to emulate.

culture and climate Edited by Amber Lincoln, Jago Cooper and Peter Loovers For more than 25,000 years, Arctic peoples have made warm and hospitable homes in diverse and innovative ways out of ecosystems of ice. For the first time in their long history, however, Arctic communities are facing the real possibility that the foundations of their way of life – sea ice and permafrost – will soon disappear. Published to coincide with a major exhibition at the British Museum, Arctic: culture and climate presents the history of the Arctic through the lens of climate and weather, and features a variety of fascinating objects, many of which are published here for the first time, including sealskin kayaks, drums used by shamans, traditional costumes and contemporary art. This remarkable book explores the origins of Arctic peoples, early trade relationships between cultural groups, and relationships with animals, weather and their environments. It examines the strategies that indigenous people have used to deal with rapid transformations brought about by European explorations and colonial governments and sheds light on how these same strategies are being utilized today to mitigate the global effects of climate change. Bringing together indigenous and non-indigenous interdisciplinary scholars, this book is an arresting insight into the ways of life and material culture of Arctic peoples.

Tantra enlightenment to revolution Imma Ramos The Tantras, a set of sacred manuscripts that emerged in India from around the sixth century CE, detail rituals for attracting spiritual, worldly and supernatural power. These rituals, which focus on the power of fierce gods and goddesses and centre around yoga, self-deification, sexual rites and the consumption of intoxicants, became an integral part of the meditations and philosophical practices of Tantric Hinduism and Buddhism. This book examines the philosophies, core beliefs and artistic expressions of Tantra, and its impact on religious, cultural and political landscapes across the globe. In tracing the history of the movement, author Imma Ramos reveals Tantra’s origins and continued relevance in India, as well as its redefinition as it was adopted by Western popular culture during the 1960s. Tantra: enlightenment to revolution accompanies a major exhibition at the British Museum, and is illustrated extensively with masterpieces of sculpture, painting, print and ritual objects from India, Nepal, Tibet, China, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, dating as far back as the eighth century CE.

Early Islamic Textiles from Along the Silk Road The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait Friedrich Spuhler The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, holds a spectacular array of ancient textiles that were made in Islamic lands and traded along the Silk Road, the network of ancient trade routes that linked China, Central Asia and Byzantium for more than 1500 years. The majority range in date from the 9th to the 15th centuries CE and were reportedly found in the caves of Samangan province in northern Afghanistan. They are accompanied by a smaller group of Chinese textiles, of similar date and provenance. Presented as a whole, this extraordinary collection, which has remained largely unpublished until now, is a rich source of information not only for the history of textiles, but also for the history of the Silk Road itself. Scientific analysis has allowed a number of these textiles to be dated with precision for the first time, making the collection an especially valuable scholarly resource. The textiles display an astonishing range of motifs, patterns and calligraphic designs. The exceptional beauty and variety of the c. 400 garments and textile fragments vividly evokes the lives of merchants, pilgrims and travellers, as well as the inhabitants of countries linked by the Silk Road.

Forgotten Peoples of the Ancient World Philip Matyszak

What do we know of the Bactrians, apart from their two-humped camels? Or of the Samaritans, other than that one of them was good? We call an uncultured lout a Philistine, but were the Philistines really ‘philistines’, and come to that, were the Vandals ‘vandals’? This book is about such peoples who, though largely forgotten, have directly or indirectly affected us today. Philip Matyszak brings these lost peoples out of the shadows to highlight their influence and achievements, and to explore the ways in which they helped to lay the foundations of our modern world. Forty-five entries span the birth of civilization in Mesopotamia to the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, offering an alternative history focusing on the names we aren’t familiar with, from the Hurrians to the Hephthalites, as well as the peoples whose names we know, such as the King Midas and the Goths. Each entry charts their rise and fall, and how their culture echoes through history into the present. Important ancient artefacts are illustrated throughout and fifty specially drawn maps help orientate the reader within this tumultuous period of history. Philip Matyszak brings to life the rich diversity of the peoples founding cities, inventing alphabets and battling each other in the ancient world, and explores how and why they came to be forgotten.

Egypt was famed throughout the ancient world as the homeland of magic – or heka. Sacred spells to help the spirits of the dead travel safely to the afterlife were inscribed on the walls of pyramids and tombs, and Pharaoh’s magicians turned sceptres into snakes. Whether you needed a love charm, a chat with your dead wife, or the ability to fly like a bird, an Egyptian magician had just the thing. Christina Riggs explores how the Egyptians thought about magic, who performed it and why, and also helps readers understand why we’ve come to think of ancient Egypt in such a mystical, magical way in the first place. This book takes Egyptian magic seriously, using ancient texts and images to tackle the blurry distinctions between magic, religion and medicine. Along the way, readers will learn how to cure scorpion bites, why you might want to break the legs off your stuffed hippopotamus toy, and whether mummies really can come back to life. Readers will also (if so inclined) be able to save a fortune on pregnancy tests by simply urinating on barley seeds, and learn how to use the next street parade to predict the future – or ensure that annoying neighbour gets his comeuppance.

Secrets of the Universe How We Discovered the Cosmos Paul Murdin 72

How did our universe come to exist? Why do stars shine? Is there life beyond the Earth? For millennia, humans have looked to the celestial sphere to explain the cosmos, first recording the movements of the Moon 25,000 years ago. Since the Enlightenment and the dawn of the space age, scientists have been unravelling cosmic mysteries, and raising astonishing new questions for future generations to answer. Today we live in an age of unprecedented astronomical revelation, from the discovery of water on Mars to the detection of gravitational waves and the first photograph of a black hole. Paul Murdin explains the science behind these discoveries, along with the passions, struggles and quirks of fate that made them some of the most intriguing dramas of their times, demonstrating how human ingenuity and technological innovation have expanded our knowledge of the Universe beyond anything our ancestors – even as recently as a generation ago – could ever have imagined.

The Age of Empires Edited by Robert Aldrich Empires evoke potent images: Stanley, Livingstone and the colonial gallery of great explorers; the Spanish Conquistador’s quest for gold and silver; and the Dutch heritage of trade in the East Indies. For over 500 years empires have been a feature of the political landscape and – a generation or more after the final collapse of most of the European Empires – the subject is still a major issue for historians. For some countries – Germany and Italy – overseas dreams were shortlived; for others – the United States and the Soviet Union – imperialist activity existed but was never accepted as an official state policy; and the disappearance of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires has obscured some of the imperial dimensions of these states. This book shows how the maps of explorations, the chronologies of conquests, the records of settlers and administrators, the balance sheets of commerce and all else that made up the Age of Empires play a key role in explaining the global civilization of today.

Ireland’s Forgotten Past A History of the Overlooked and Disremembered Turtle Bunbury • Illustrations by Joe McLaren Why did the Romans never try to conquer Ireland? Why did the King of Spain give his name to an Irish county? And how did brandy change the course of Irish history? Turtle Bunbury explores unexpected corners of the past to offer an informative and entertaining glimpse into thirty-six lesser-known tales from Irish history, from the eruption of a massive volcano in County Armagh sixty million years ago to more recent events that have made Ireland the vibrant place it is today. In his inimitable style, Bunbury explores the people and events from high to low that played major roles in Ireland’s fascinating past but have since been overlooked. These alternative annals include tales of spymasters and scientists, battlefields and brothels, tailors and traitors. Ireland’s Forgotten Past paints a surprising, witty and engaging new portrait of an Ireland you thought you knew.

Nearly three thousand winters after the death of the bear, a band of humans made a clearing in a primitive forest between Creadan Head and Dunmore East in County Waterford. They constructed what is believed to be the oldest settlement in Ireland; thousands of stone knives, scrapers and tiny blades made from chert pebbles have been found at the site. At about this time, similar settlements sprang up at Ballyferriter, near Dingle, County Kerry, and at Mount Sandel, near Coleraine, County Derry. Our knowledge of what Ireland was like during the Mesolithic period remains profoundly vague. These people were shorter than us, and shorter-lived, too, with lifespans perhaps half the length of our own. They may have been dark-skinned and blue-eyed, like England’s ten-thousand-year-old Cheddar Man is thought to have been. They would have spoken their own fully-fledged language, incomprehensible to modern ears. Excavations at Mount Sandel suggest they lived in egg-shaped, dome-roofed structures, constructed of timber posts, saplings, hide, bark, thatch and reeds. Perhaps a dozen people could comfortably fit into each hut; the inhabitants snoozed around a central hearth that afforded them a holy trinity of heat, light and a place to cook. The flint-smith was of pivotal importance, crafting arrowheads, hide scrapers and spears with razor-sharp blades, as well as polished stone picks and axes. Women played a key role in the quest for food. During the summer, these plucky souls foraged for crab apples, lily seeds, berries and protein-rich hazelnuts that could be kept in storage for the leaner months. Taking to the water in dug-out log canoes, they trapped and speared the migrating salmon, sea bass, plaice, flounder and autumnal eel that swam in and around the estuaries and coastline; the fish were smoked or dried on wooden racks just beside their huts. 16 It Starts with a Bear

The Dinosaurs Rediscovered

‘Mike Benton has brought together all the latest information in this succinct and well illustrated book to challenge previously accepted ideas, and succeeds in bringing [the dinosaurs] back to life for another generation’ Richard Fortey

Startling new fossil finds are the lifeblood of modern palaeobiology. Giant sauropod dinosaur skeletons from Patagonia, dinosaurs with feathers from China, and even a tiny dinosaur tail in Burmese amber – complete down to every detail of its filament-like feathers, skin, bones and mummified tail muscles – inspire awe in a global audience enthralled by the idea of these great creatures walking the earth. Dinosaurs are of perennial interest to all ages, as illustrated by the huge range of dino-themed films, books and live attractions, from the enduring popularity of the Jurassic Park franchise to the success of London’s immersive ‘Dinosaurs in the Wild’ experience. In the past twenty years, dinosaur study has changed from natural history to testable science. New technologies have revealed secrets locked in the bones in a way nobody predicted – we can now work out the colour of dinosaurs, their bite forces, speeds and parental care as well as how they came to die out. This groundbreaking book illustrates how science has replaced speculation and how our understanding of dinosaurs and their world has completely changed. The subject has never been so vigorous, has never changed so fast, and has never been so attractive to so many.

Archaeology Theories, Method and Practice Colin Renfrew and Paul Bahn Since its first edition, Renfrew and Bahn’s Archaeology: Theories, Methods, and Practice has been the leading educational source on what archaeologists do and how they do it. The text is organized around the key questions that archaeologists ask about the past and details the practical and theoretical ways in which answers to those questions are sought. The eighth edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, with an overhauled book design, including, for each chapter, distinct introductions that offer a general overview of each topic covered. It also provides a more inclusive picture of archaeology, raising the profile of women in the discipline’s history, describing the development of archaeology in China and Japan, and updated critique of postcolonial approaches. There is also updated coverage of the ontological turn in archaeology, and new examples of community archaeology in southern Africa and Australia. New discoveries and research across the globe – such as archaeological evidence of social hierarchies at the ancient city of Liangzhu, China, and recent evidence of Neanderthal art in France and Spain – have also been added. Hailed as ‘a student essential’ by Current Archaeology, this book remains the standard textbook on archaeology courses all over the world.

The book not only explores the art of Rome itself but also that of the Roman provinces, including Syria, Egypt, Algeria, Greece and the British Isles, showing how Roman art drew from and influenced the wider ancient world. Each of the book’s four parts opens with a timeline and historical overview, allowing the reader to better understand how the art relates to the political and social lives of the people of ancient Rome. Individual chapters begin with a map of Rome, illustrating how the city changed over centuries of rebuilding and reimagining. With an introduction, ‘What Is Roman about Roman Art?’, and ‘Materials and Techniques’ features on the artistic innovations introduced by the Romans, such as concrete, linear and atmospheric perspective, and mosaic, the book explores how Roman influences still affect the art and architectural world today.

The Art of Earth Architecture shows the extreme diversity of this type of architecture from a technical, cultural and historical point of view. After presenting the various types of raw earth constructions (adobe and rammed earth, wattle and daub and more), Jean Dethier reveals some of the raw earth masterpieces scattered across five continents, many listed as UNESCO world heritage sites. From the creations of antiquity to those of today, as well as vernacular heritage and modernist works, the book surveys a multitude of building types: monumental structures – the temples and palaces of Mesopotamia, the Great Wall of China, the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali, large urban developments – the city of Tenochtitlan in Mexico, the medinas of Morocco; housing in Marrakech, Bogota and various European cities; the tower-houses of the Batammariba people in Togo; Martin Rauch’s villas in Austria; and public amenities – a high school in Bangladesh, a museum in Australia, a market in Koudougou, Burkina Faso, and many more. The culmination of a lifetime’s work, this definitive book is illustrated with around 700 photographs and about 100 drawings and architectural plans.

It was around his tenth birthday that Kengo Kuma came into contact with Kenzo Tange’s fishlike Yoyogi National Gymnastics building, completed for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and determined that he would become an architect. In the intervening five or so decades, he has become one of the world’s most fascinating and influential architects. His design of the National Stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics provides a poetic circularity to his career as an architect, and an opportunity for him to reflect on his own development. Kuma is known throughout the world for his formally daring and materially expressive buildings, recognized for his inventive use of traditional materials, and his use of innovative materials in vernacular forms. He is perhaps less known for his work inside his native Japan, where he works actively towards the preservation of ancient building techniques and craft. A keen curiosity for all forms of building and a wealth of knowledge about the world acquired through expansive travels make Kuma a unique commentator on Tokyo’s dynamic architecture. Through twenty-five stories, this intimate publication paints a picture of how a building inspired a boy to become an architect, how Japan’s national heritage helped form his thinking, and how his professional experience has made him one of the most successful architects of his generation. David Adjaye – Works Houses, Pavilions, Installations, Buildings, 1995–2007 Edited by Peter Allison David Adjaye, the son of a Tanzanian diplomat, spent his childhood moving between international cities before settling in London, where he was educated. Fresh out of the Royal Academy of Art at the turn of the millennium, his early commissions and collaborations with an influential generation of artists set the stage for the young architect’s spatial and material explorations. His artistic sensitivity, deft use of space and inexpensive, unexpected materials resulted in a number of iconic projects. With the hindsight of almost twenty years of practice and a raft of highprofile projects around the world – perhaps best symbolized by his National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. – the significance of Adjaye’s earlier projects is clear. Never shying away from a challenge, Adjaye used his first projects as testbeds for what would become his unique, acclaimed and sought-after brand of ‘critical regionalism’. This monograph presents all the first projects of Adjaye’s corpus, many little documented. From London’s West End to Brooklyn, clever urban interventions and pavilions to private houses for artists and public buildings for the many. These early projects, brought together and presented with new analyses and recently uncovered archival material, testify to the originality of an architect at the height of his talents who is changing the face of our built world.

Mok Wei Wei Works by W Architects Mok Wei Wei • Edited by Justin Zhuang 84

During a career spanning over three decades, award-winning architect Mok Wei Wei has designed numerous large- and small-scale projects in Singapore with his practice W Architects. From apartment complexes and museums to houses and community centres, each project reveals the architect’s wideranging inspirations and ingenious solutions to the challenges of building in the tropical city-stage. Produced in close collaboration with the architect, this book presents the full span of Mok Wei Wei’s career. The works are presented in three themed chapters – Refract, Respond, Reflect – and move through Mok Wei Wei’s career from the early 1980s to the present, from his first Frank Gehry-inspired experiments to his highly innovative green apartment buildings and private residences. Singapore, one of the world’s most dynamic and evolving cities and architecture scenes, provides the backdrop for most of the featured work, making the book as much a survey on the rich possibilities of tropical architecture as an expression of the fundamental role architecture plays in the history of a modern city-state. W Architects illustrates a unique approach to designing buildings for a dense city environment, working in the context of a diverse multicultural society facing up to the challenges of climate, heritage preservation, globalism and national identity.

Furniture in Architecture The Work of Luke Hughes Aidan Walker • Foreword by Tanya Harrod 86

Luke Hughes & Company’s enduring and meticulously engineered furniture, an eloquent response both to the architecture it inhabits and to the true Arts and Crafts spirit, has been placed at the forefront of the ‘craft-led renaissance in British manufacturing’. Flexible in use, commercially viable and environmentally sustainable, the work furnishes many of the world’s most distinguished buildings, from Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London and most of the Oxford and Cambridge university colleges to the Keystone Academy in Beijing and one of New York City’s most vibrant synagogues. Through an introduction to the studio and more than twenty-five case studies, Furniture in Architecture explores the company’s place in the Arts and Crafts tradition and examines the philosophy and work of its founder, Luke Hughes. Aidan Walker sheds light on how the studio balances modern manufacturing technologies with abiding craft values, rendering the small furniture workshop a profitable and environmentally sustainable proposition even when fulfilling largescale commissions. This fascinating survey defines the elements of successful design and addresses the meaning of craft and craftsmanship in the digital age.

Building St Paul’s James W. P. Campbell Building St Paul’s tells the story of the cathedral that has dominated London’s skyline for 300 years and of those responsible for its construction from the time of the disastrous Great Fire to final completion in 1708. The figure of Sir Christopher Wren is well known, but this book also considers those ordinary craftsmen, the contractors and overseers, the quarrymen on the Isle of Portland, the humble stonemasons and carpenters who shaped the materials. James W. P. Campbell is the first historian to plough through the documents in search of these people: he describes life on a seventeenth-century building site, the workers’ day-to-day responsibilities, how some were poorly paid while others became millionaires. He also unravels the struggles for money that at one time threatened to undermine the whole enterprise. Campbell’s account reaffirms St Paul’s not only as one man’s masterwork, but as an incredible collaborative achievement.

‘A taut study … Campbell provides a wealth of detail about Wren’s construction methods … lively and informative’ Daily Telegraph

Plants For The People

Deep ruby jewels emerging from forest-green foliage in the autumnal months, rosehips are most commonly harvested from the beautiful dog rose, Rosa canina, often found growing wild and free. Native American tribes wove rosehips into their medicinal repertoire, as did the Europeans in the World War II era, when the hips warded off scurvy with their supercharged vitamin C content. The fresh raw fruit offers a world of antioxidant goodness. Abundant bioflavonoids and Vitamin C enhance immunity and address a Vitamin C deficiency, blurring the line between food and medicine beautifully. Rosehips address the underlying stressors that often contribute to a lowered immune defense, they usher in warmth, and are completely delightful for sore throats, colds and flu. The heart responds well to rosehips; unsurprisingly, as the rose holds strong medicine akin to the heart. The antioxidants within the hips support the cardiovascular system and overall work to reduce systemic chronic inflammation, great for varicose veins and all sorts of venous insufficiency. The hips are gently astringent, helpful in cases of diarrhoea and acting to cool overheated states of the body. Rosehips are often prescribed for arthritic conditions, to prevent further degeneration and offer relief from joint pain, stiffness and aches. The sweet and sour fruits also show promising antiaging and anticancer affects. A floral superfood, fresh rosehips make the most excellent medicinal jam, fortifying immunity through the winter months!

GOLDEN TIP Rosehip powder is a delicious addition to smoothies. The powder is a freezedried form of the fruit, maintaining all the medicinal bounty yet in a much more accessible form.

Elderberry elixir I called upon the queen of the elderberry elixir herself, my mentor and friend, the wonderfully wise naturopath Kira Sutherland, to share this winter warmer. Kira has been making this uplifting recipe for years and I am thrilled to share it with you all.

INGREDIENTS

200 g (7 oz) fresh elderberries or 100 g (3.5 oz) dried elderberries 60 g (2 oz) dried rosehips 40 g (1.5 oz) echinacea roots/leaves/flowers 30 g (1 oz) cinnamon chips 15 g (0.5 oz) licorice root 2 litres (2 quarts / 8 cups) apple juice, or 1.5 litres (1.5 quarts / 6 cups) apple juice and 500 ml (1 pint / 2 cups) pomegranate juice (be sure to use sugar-free fruit juices) 300 ml (10 fl oz / 1¼ cups) raw honey EQUIPMENT

Place all of the herbal ingredients into the saucepan, and add the 2 litres (2 quarts / 8 cups) of juice. Mix gently. Bring to the boil over a medium heat, then simmer for around 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Strain out the herbs through a fine mesh sieve.

Plants For The People

THE WILD HEALERS

Large saucepan Fine mesh sieve Sterilised glass bottles and lids METHOD

Put the liquid back on the stove and add the raw honey. Stir over very low heat until the honey has melted through (avoid overheating the honey so as to preserve its enzyme-rich properties). Allow the mix to cool completely and decant into sterilised glass bottles or jars. Seal well and store in the fridge for up to a month.

This mix is delicious straight off the spoon! Take 1 tablespoon daily for wellness and increase up to 3 tablespoons daily if immunity is feeling a little depleted.

PAT T E R N S USING PLANTS

A GREAT GARDEN IS HELD TOGETHER BY A SERIES OF PATTERNS THAT ARE WEAVED AND BLENDED TOGETHER. PLANTING FOR BEDDING, BORDERS AND CONTAINERS ARE KEY TO THE DEFINITION OF GARDEN DESIGN, WHETHER IT’S A FORMAL PLAN OR SOMETHING MORE NATURALISTIC.

Flat surfaces: tiles TILES ARE OFTEN SEEN IN CONTINENTAL EUROPE AND OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE PATTERNS ON THE TILES THEMSELVES OR BY BEING CREATIVE WITH HOW THEY ARE SET. IN A WORLD WHERE HOMES AND GARDENS ARE SEAMLESSLY JOINED, TILES OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY TO LINK THE SPACES.

There is something about pattern that sets our minds alight. Pattern serves many purposes: it instantly gives a design or space order and structure; it creates rhythm and it can make a garden or area feel unified and complete. Pattern in gardens can be blatant as well as designed in such a way the pattern becomes subconscious. Fully endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, Jack Wallington’s practical reference guide shows readers how to choose and use plants with pattern, and transform their gardens with texture, shape and flair. The book is packed with photographs, drawings and illustrated planting plans featuring ‘patterns’ that can be scaled up or down to fit the area being planted. Case studies demonstrate the principles presented in the book, with examples including patterns for ‘natural’ designs as well as more formal approaches that create a stronger sense of order and detail. Exploring how to bring pattern into every aspect of the garden, from lawns and borders to paving and water features, this book is the perfect resource for the reader looking to revitalize their garden, large or small.

Impressionist Cats Susan Herbert Cats playing a quiet game of cards, cats at the ballet, cats having a leisurely lunch on the grass, cats boating on the river… Here are the quintessential Impressionist cats, painted with vivid, joyous colours in their favourite haunts, at their ease in various ordinary activities. With their pensive, brooding expressions, cats lend themselves perfectly to reimagining the great works of the Impressionist masters, whether strolling among Monet’s wild poppies, sitting in Mary Cassatt’s loge at the opera, or even enjoying a Sunday dance at Renoir’s Bougival. They can be charming or steeped in mute despair, vulgar or lovingly maternal, bourgeois or intellectual – but they are always Impressionist cats, caught as if by the camera, spontaneous and unprepared.

Henri Cartier-Bresson China 1948-1949, 1958 Michel Frizot • Ying-lung Su

Henri Cartier-Bresson travelled to China in December 1948 at the request of Life magazine. He stayed for ten months and captured some of the most spectacular moments in the country’s history, photographing Beijing in ‘the last days of the Kuomintang’ and bearing witness to the new regime’s takeover in Shanghai. Then, in 1958, Cartier-Bresson was one of the first Western photographers to go back to China to record the changes that had taken place over the preceding decade. The ‘picture stories’ he sent to Magnum and Life played a key role in Westerners’ understanding of Chinese political events. Many of these images are among the best-known and most significant photographs in Cartier-Bresson’s oeuvre: his empathy with the populace and sense of responsibility as a witness make them an important part of his legacy.

Henri Cartier-Bresson China 1948 -1949, 1958

Henri Cartier-Bresson: China 1948-1949, 1958 allows these photographs to be re-examined along with all of the documents that were preserved: the photographer’s captions and comments, contact sheets and abundant correspondence, as well as the published versions that appeared in both American and European magazines. A welcome addition to any photography lover’s bookshelf, this is an exciting new volume on one of the twentieth century’s most important photographers.
