This is Apple. He’s not a normal, nice kind of apple. Not a peaceful piece of fruit, no sir. He’s rotten to the core. In this hilarious story about a really bad apple by awardwinning author and polar explorer Huw Lewis Jones, a series of simple rhymes is transformed into a sequence of events that will have readers splitting their sides with laughter. As one silly scenario unfolds after the other, a common piece of fruit shows readers what he’s really made of by making life miserable for Pear, Pea, Cat, Spud and Spoon, among others. In a very dark twist at the end, he receives his comeuppance. As the follow-up titles attest, this won’t be the last we hear from Bad Apple. With painterly and comic illustrations by Ben Sanders, this new picture book series is witty and stylish with mass-market appeal.

A heartfelt story about learning to cope with anxiety and grief

ISBN 978 0 500 651902

Out to Sea follows the journey of a young girl named Lara who is so sad at the death of her grandmother that she is carried out to sea on a flood of her own tears. When it seems like sadness has overwhelmed her entirely, she discovers a pearl at the bottom of the ocean that triggers memories of the many happy times Lara shared with her grandmother. With the pearl safely at her side, Lara realises that she is not alone and finds the strength to pick up her oars and row herself back home. Illustrated in Helen Kellock’s inimitable style of pencil, gouache and watercolour artworks, Out to Sea expresses the experience of anxiety and grief with unprecedented sensitivity. Unlike other books for children about loss or grief that usher their readers towards a conclusion, Out to Sea shows readers how they might ride the wave of emotions without losing perspective.

Mole digs and digs, dreaming of finding something colourful, but day after day, he is disappointed. One day, Mole finds a radish poking through the top of his tunnel like a chandelier. They start chatting, and as Mole listens to the descriptions of life above ground, he imagines bright clothes, red roofs, vibrant green trees, pastel flowers and the blush of the sun as it sinks through the sky. The next morning, Mole is distraught to discover that his chandelier is gone, leaving a hole in its place. He crawls out of the hole and into the world above – and into a place more colourful than he ever dreamed possible. Printed in vivid pantones and with an inventive die-cut hole in the cover, Mole in a Black and White Hole tells a charming tale about what awaits us when we seek out the light in the darkness.

How to be an Art Rebel Ben Street Illustrated by Jay Daniel Wright For ages 7+

ISBN 978-0-500-65164-3

An anarchic introduction to art for young rebels everywhere

10

This irreverent introduction to art gives children the confidence to respond to art on their own terms, and – most importantly – to have fun with it. Under the playful guidance of Leo, the museum cat, readers encounter abstract, Surrealist, nude and contemporary art, ancient sculpture, still lifes and portraits. But instead of being told facts to memorize, they’re equipped with the knowledge that allows them to come up with their own interpretations of famous art works. Knowing how symbols work, they’ll decipher clues in Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait; understanding Surrealism, they’ll decide for themselves what Joan Miró’s abstract doodles are all about. This book shows that art isn’t about knowing the right answers – it’s about having fun, making up your own mind and seeing things from a different angle.

In spring, the number of bees in the hive begins to grow. There’s not enough space for all of them. This is when bees begin to swarm.

The dance of the scout bees tells the other bees how far away the new place is and in which direction. If more than one scout bee finds a good home, the rest of the swarm must decide which bee they want to follow. The old queen leaves the hive with some of the young workers. They settle on a branch and form a big hanging swarm.

Back in the old hive, new queens grow inside special cells and are looked after by the workers. When the first new queen hatches, she kills the other queens with her stinger and takes over the hive.

Watch out, Mr. Busby! Your bees are flying away! Beekeepers must pay attention to their hives in springtime if they don’t want to lose their bees. A swarm can hang from a branch for a day, which gives the beekeeper time to capture it and place it in a new hive. But if the beekeeper isn’t fast enough, the swarm might fly away for good!

Scout bees set out to look for a new home for the swarm. They search the nearby area and come back to tell the other bees when they find a good place to live. They do this by doing a dance in the air.

A bee can fly 50 miles (80 km) in a day!

The yellow iris often grows in marshy places. Damselfly

The heron uses its long legs to wade in shallow water, looking for food. Its long beak is very good for catching fish.

Watch out, nettles can sting you! But they’re not all bad. They can also be eaten as a vegetable or used to make a green dye.

A marsh is a wetland area where lots of rushes and grasses grow.

The soil is spongy and it’s hard to grow crops there.

It’s a popular place for birds to live.

Bracket fungus is a type of mushroom that grows on tree trunks.

A natural hollow, such as a hole in a tree, makes an excellent home for bees. Quick, go back to the swarm and tell them that you’ve found somewhere to live!

14

Squirrels like to make their homes in hollow trees. Their long tails help them to balance when they run and jump along the branches.

75 FOOTBALL WAS INVENTED BY THE CHINESE handlebars brake handle brake block brake cable front fork

It wasn’t the English or the French, but rather the Chinese who invented the world’s most popular ball sport. Over two thousand years before football spread throughout Europe, Chinese soldiers were playing a game called ‘tsu-cho’, which literally means ‘kick-ball’. A leather ball was filled with feathers or fur, and two teams tried to score points by kicking it through a goal. Use of the hands was not allowed. The game became extremely popular later during the Song dynasty, which lasted from 960–1279 ce.

AAH!

a game of tsu-cho Professional football as we know it today started in 1863 in England. In the initial years, football was a much rougher game than it is now: stamping on an opponent’s foot was usually allowed, even when they didn’t have the ball. If the keeper was in possession of it, you could even try to ram him into the goal yourself to score a point.

76 YO-YO CHAMPIONSHIPS – IT’S A THING! Yo-yo’s are heaps of fun to play with, and you might even know a few tricks yourself. But if you want to go pro, you could register for the World Yo-yo Championships!

74 THE WORLD’S LIGHTEST RACING BIKE WEIGHS LESS THAN A NEWBORN BABY • The world’s lightest racing bike weighs only 2.7 kilograms. It could easily be lifted with one hand, and feels lighter than a small bag of potatoes. • To make it, German Gunter Mai built a bicycle frame that weighed only 642.5 grams. The bicycle’s ‘fork’ (the two prongs on either side of the front wheel) weighs only 185.9 grams. Mai worked on his design until it weighed only 2.8 kilos, then sold it to an American

• The competition consists of two parts. First there are several compulsory tricks you need to perform; after that there’s a freestyle section

bicycle manufacturer who made special wheels weighing only 583 grams. That made the bike even lighter, but certainly not cheaper: all in all, the bicycle’s construction cost $45,000 dollars. • Bicycles that are too light aren’t allowed to be used in official races. According to the International Cyclists’ Union (the UNI), competition bicycles must not be any lighter than 6.8 kilograms

when you can show off your individual and artistic talents. Points are awarded by a panel of judges, and whoever scores the highest wins. Music is allowed when freestyling, and competitors are even allowed to dance or jump around! • To get to the world championships, you first need to make it through the national championships. The Japanese are especially good yo-yoers: Shinji Saito has won the world title no fewer than 13 times!

YO! YO!

• Not every country has its own national yo-yo championship – there has never been one in Belgium or the Netherlands, for example. But that could change soon: the Netherlands is now negotiating to hold official contests and send finalists to the world championships.
